Nationwide this December. Go to Matt Rogers Official.com for tickets. And by the way I'm coming to Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, Vancouver, Toronto, Chicago, Boston, D.C., and New York, and London. That's November 18. Okay, I think that's everything. God,
Starting point is 00:02:16 Christmas is exhausting. Oh, I see. Wow, my eye on my. Bowen, look over there. Wow, is that culture. Yes, goodness. Wow. Las Culturistas. Ding dong, Las Colteristas calling. I'm beaming on my way walking here today. For sure, for sure. Oh, but I did have a dark realization. What? About this cycle. This cycle?
Starting point is 00:02:44 We're not getting B-sides. It's because you give us avalanchevades. Because the duality is inherent in the concept. Okay, she doesn't think you don't know that yet. Whoa. You don't know that yet. This can become a quadruple album if we're lucky. Day and night and Twilight.
Starting point is 00:03:03 Twilight dusk. Dusk, oh no, no, no, twas. Well, no, what is it called? Cropuscular? What is it called when the sun rises? I was gonna say crepuscular. You know. Wait, you don't have to look it up,
Starting point is 00:03:18 but it might be helpful. Is Dawn? Okay, so Don, but Don, like, Don kind of gets folded right into morning, don't we think? Or day, I should say. Anyway, okay, I just have to really let this out. Let it out. Matt texts the
Starting point is 00:03:35 Pod group chat today Anyone have Carly Way Vinyl's at home That we can display Behind the job wire I have a ton I said oh I've got I said a fuck ton Yeah he said a fuck ton he cursed Wow
Starting point is 00:03:47 And I think four constitutes a fuckton I'm sorry Four constitutes a fuck ton To me Well they say two is a couple Three is a few Four is a fuck ton And five is several Yeah
Starting point is 00:03:57 That's a rule culture That's a rule culture number 44 Two is a couple three is a few, four is a fuck ton, and five is several. I really like that one. I really like that one. I have emotion, emotion, 10 year anniversary edition. Gay guy.
Starting point is 00:04:12 With all the Japanese bonus tracks and all that gay stuff. Love this. I have dedicated and I have the loneliest time. And I was like, I'm bringing all four in and we're going to swap him out through the episode. Get on the train. I go, fuck! And he yelled it again. And I yelled it again.
Starting point is 00:04:27 And I took it away from the mic. You're welcome, by he. But yeah. And she's, of course, she's very Canadian about it. And she's like, oh my gosh, it's fine. We're going to get into Canada as a fellow Canadian. It is fine because the thing is like, this actually is, and I said this to you, I did some digging and I did some research and this is lore.
Starting point is 00:04:46 Because on the very first episode of this podcast. 10 years ago. 10 years ago, an episode entitled The Grammys, we said, run away with me was the record and song of the year. And Emotion was the pop album of that year and several years. and it was paid dust that year by the Grammys. And that was on the first episode of Los Angeles. And that was the moment we were chosen as God's favorite.
Starting point is 00:05:08 Yes. They, God pointed down and said, that's my favorite podcast. The Grammys are got. And it's going to do well. It's going to do well. Because the Grammys are godless. So of course they paid that album dust. It's actually Rule of Culture number seven.
Starting point is 00:05:18 The Grammys are godless. So, uh, day and night, September 18th. Yes. We've gotten a little preview. I've been, I've been spinning it. banging it. On the son of the song. Don't leave me on the death.
Starting point is 00:05:30 Don't. There's a song, there's several songs, but I'm gonna single out. You don't know what, you don't know how it feels. Good, fine, all right. Patience, power, passion. Patience, patient, passion, patient, passion, we'll get it. We're gonna bring her in. We're gonna bring her in.
Starting point is 00:05:46 She is, she is one of our most prolific songwriters, singers, Canadians, and musical theater, legends. All she needs is an angel I bet you thought I forgot I bet everyone Did you think I forgot No way Just wait Please welcome
Starting point is 00:06:09 Carly Rachel Wow It's a moment in time for us You have no idea Earlier hearing you talk about Twilight versus the dawn It was like witnessing the inside of my head I was like yes
Starting point is 00:06:22 Can you expand on this? Well no no I mean I can and I can't Oh Inner Scope Let her talk. Wait, so there, okay, so you will not confirm or deny it this time that there will be a companion album to day and night.
Starting point is 00:06:38 I will just say that there may be a little something. Okay, a little something. A little something. And I, yeah. Because you can't go full meal on us. You want to course it out. I just love a little tease, a little hint, a little... Sure.
Starting point is 00:06:49 Who knows what's coming next? Totally. So are you familiar with, well, I'm just making this up, but I feel like this is also what you're doing with this album is you're Pokemoning us. So Pokemon will do two versions. of the same game generation in every release. You're Pokemon.
Starting point is 00:07:04 I'm, yeah, I don't have a lot of Pokemon. Don't know. I'll just tell you. It'll make total sense. So the first generation was Pokemon red and blue. Second generation was golden silver. Third generation is Ruby Sapphire.
Starting point is 00:07:15 Fourth is Diamond Pearl. Do you see where I'm going? It's like they do like the dual releases. Yes, I do. I see it. I see it. So this is, and I'm, I really do want to get into it right away.
Starting point is 00:07:25 I mean, we can banter and we'll banter. But I feel like this is all rooted from you, from the legend, because I feel like when this first made itself public, the fact that you wrote 200 to 250 songs for emotion was the thing where all of us were like, holy shit. This is, something's brewing here with Carly in terms of the myth of Carly Ray Jepson. It's like, this woman will write a fuck ton of songs, at least four, and she'll write a fuck ton of songs, and then she'll pair it back. But does this motivate like this kind of volume of album?
Starting point is 00:07:59 I think so. I think at some point I was, I came to peace with the fact that I overwrite. I write a lot. You work in abundance. Yeah, and I don't know why exactly. I guess maybe it's because I like to explore and play and I don't really know what I'm doing at the beginning. And then I kind of start to find it in a song or two. And then I want to go explore that world. Yeah. But I think it really just comes from I really love songwriting and I like to do it often. and it's just like kind of part of how I process things. So I always have more than I need.
Starting point is 00:08:33 And then I really like to take that and like kind of hone in on what the cream of the crop is really. Okay. So like there are some singers and songwriters who are like, sometimes it'll be the title first or the concept or a photo. And then the hook. But it's always, has it always generally been like mass clay on the table first? And then you figure it out? I don't really approach like one.
Starting point is 00:08:58 song the same way every time. So every, I think that's why it's interesting. You can kind of go in and think, hey, this happened to me and I need to write about it. Or it can just be your imagination and fantasy. You know, like, oh, I wish this happened to me. Let's go there. Or sometimes a melody will come to me. It's just sort of, as I think it comes to all of us, like in the shower and you're like, oh, is that something? Should I hold on to it? And sometimes you're like, no, it was just a bad idea. But other times there's, it kind of sticks in your head. and you kind of want to go play with it. So, yeah, I do think more so than ever with this album,
Starting point is 00:09:33 I think because I've been in the game for a little longer, I had a bit more confidence to, like, not think that I needed to go in and play by the rules as much. So it wasn't like, okay, we're making a formulaic, like, pop song. It was a little bit more, like, we know how to do that. Let's just go and play a little bit and see what happens and be free with it. And I was working with a lot of friends and collaborators who were like-minded in that way.
Starting point is 00:09:58 So it would just be like we'd go and have like a long conversation in dinner and then go to the studio later that night. And all of a sudden we're like, a song was born. Yeah. And it just kind of happened really effortlessly. Yeah. I love when I can clearly tell you're having so much fun in the booth. You have one of the most effervescent, like, and like legible voices in terms of like we can feel the joy almost immediately. And you're such an amazing actor in the booth.
Starting point is 00:10:23 Oh, thank you. I don't know if you like feel like when. you're in the booth you're acting, but it comes through, like, character. I think that I'm definitely, when I'm singing and I'm hearing other vocalists that I love, I can tell when I buy it and I can tell when I don't. And so I don't know if I'm acting so much as I'm, like, really,
Starting point is 00:10:46 but, like, maybe I'm acting, but I'm really taking on the feeling of what I wrote the song about. That's how I don't forget the words when I'm on stage, too. Believe it and you won't forget. Back to that place of being, like, that guy. Now we're going to sing your type. Totally. I'm not ready to sing it until I think about him and then it all comes back to me like I wrote it for the first time. And that with the same
Starting point is 00:11:07 severity like... Sometimes more. Because you're like that asshole. He's still out there. You're like wow, this is a song that I wrote. I should have put his name in this song. I didn't because I'm classy. It's honestly one of my favorites of yours of all time because of exactly where you're saying, I'm not the type of girl for you. I saw your performance of that. Did you? It was a to me. I was like, he committed. Honestly. You're an actor yourself,
Starting point is 00:11:32 you're an actor yourself, said. You know, I do my thing. When I have great material. Oh, it's like, it ain't on the page, it ain't on the stage. I, we went to Hammerstein Ballroom to see you.
Starting point is 00:11:46 I think I'm seeing you, I saw you at the Greek. Oh my goodness. Yeah. And I think, or it was a show, multiple times, it was a show where before Julian, you're like, everyone's asking about Julian, he's just a guy with,
Starting point is 00:11:57 the name that fits into a song that scans into a song. But you're, you're, I did date a guy named Julian. See, I'm not gonna lie. But he wasn't that, he wasn't, he wasn't, he wasn't, he wasn't the Julian that I fantasized about in the song, right. But I needed to like pine over for all eternity. Right.
Starting point is 00:12:14 He was just a really fun weekend. Yeah. But what a beautiful name. What a beautiful thing. It's come on. Actually, I knew some gay guys at the time who were having difficult times with Julian's. And the gift that you gave them, I, I once saw a gay guy do a lip sync to this, to a song
Starting point is 00:12:27 called Julian and it was about his ex. To Carly's Julian? Yes. But I think J-U-L-I-A-N was how he spelled it. I am kind of mad though because it's such a good name. I would have almost like wish I'd reserved it for like, you know, a future son or something like that. But now I've put it in like this song,
Starting point is 00:12:47 it's kind of dead in the water to me. Can't touch it. You can flip the E to an A like with what Matt's saying. Okay. But Julian with an E is very Canadian, it's very French Canadian, He was a French Canadian guy. There you go. Julien?
Starting point is 00:13:01 Julian. Do you know about your connection here? No, where in Canada are in front? Brossard, brosard, across the St. Lawrence in Montreal. Oh my goodness. So it's both Canadian and also like a little bit racist. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:13:16 No, I did not know who are going there. Come on, French Canadians. I can say that. I can say that and they have to own it and they can own it. They do. I never got more, I'm sorry, not to, we can all laugh about this, I promise. I've never been more ching chonged in my life than in Canada. So crazy.
Starting point is 00:13:38 But it's okay. It's okay. We're laughing about it now. Ha ha ha ha ha. Food is great. We love protein. We love food chintin. We love St.
Starting point is 00:13:47 Cuba. We love St. Any comment on that? Vancouver. Vancouver. I'm from Vancouver. Different side. I'm going to see girl.
Starting point is 00:13:57 Actually, Vancouver, I might need recommendations for you. I'm going to be there in December. Oh, yeah. Lunch Lady, Vietnamese place on, what's that, oh, that gorgeous street that just runs all the way down, that's like in the fun little, oh, I'm forgetting it. Anyway. In Kitts? Yes, yes, yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:14:11 Is it? I live in Kittalano. There's a place called Aphrodite's. That's, like, a very nice little breakfast. Yeah. I used to live right next to it. I'm trying to think, trees, organic coffee. I used to work there. Oh, you were a barista.
Starting point is 00:14:23 You were a barista. I was a barista. It was a brista until the pastry chef ran off with an internet lover, and then I became the pastry chef. Oh my God. You became the pastry chef yourself. I made Vancouver's number one best cheesecake. Stop it. Oh, wait.
Starting point is 00:14:37 Are you a cheesecake icon? Yeah. Braid it by us. What was in the cheesecake, Prateau? Oh, a lot of cream cheese. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. What's the best one you've ever had your own?
Starting point is 00:14:48 You know, I could not make you one cheesecake. I can make you eight cheesecakes at a time. So if you're in the mood. At a time. Yeah. Well, because it's the best one. It was mass, you know, you're just making for a whole thing. Well, you create an abundance.
Starting point is 00:14:58 I'm sure I could do the math. Yeah, there you go. You create an abundance. You make cakes like you make songs. That's true. And I bet they were perfect and delicious. Are you at eight albums now? I think so.
Starting point is 00:15:10 You should make one cheesecake. I mean, there's a party. Talk of the word cheesecake. Get fat, get happy. Get fat, get happy. Best cheesecake I ever had was a raspberry creme brulee cheese cake. Oh, that sounds divine.
Starting point is 00:15:22 It was at a seafood restaurant I used to work at. in Long Island, they had no right to be like also slaying the cheesecakes like this. I mean, we would always put a lot of different ingredients in ours, but I really come back to like just the classic cheesecake with some strawberries. Yeah. Nice black coffee to go with. Oh, my time.
Starting point is 00:15:40 Yeah. I think you should do a psychedelic switch cheesecake with shrooms in it. And that would be really nice. That's a good way to disguise, though. Yeah. Very rich, you know. You would never know. You'd never, well, you'd know eventually.
Starting point is 00:15:51 You would find out. You would find out. Have you ever. endeavored to write in like an altered state? In like a mushroom state? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, I think that. Well, I mean, not in a mushroom state.
Starting point is 00:16:04 Okay, psychedelic switch was born in a totally sober way. I'm going to tell you the... I hope this isn't kill the magic. What? But I'm going to tell you where I got the idea for psychedelic switch. I was in the studio and there was... Sorry, this is going to kill the magic. I already know that.
Starting point is 00:16:21 There was a light switch in the corner. and it had a mushroom on it. That's amazing. Psychedelic switch. But what if that was like an idea of how your brain switched on when you fall in love? And that's where it was born. That's incredible.
Starting point is 00:16:35 That like actually brings the magic force. It's more magic. Really? Okay, okay, thank you. The fact that you can see, just like make a word association off the most random thing and then it becomes completely something else.
Starting point is 00:16:46 Shout out also to my collaborative. I didn't write it alone. It was Nate Seifert, Kyle Shearer. We had a day. We were on a wave. It was a fun day. Not a time. But that, no.
Starting point is 00:16:54 No, I don't think you should ever doubt that the magic would be gone from process. I think you out of many singers have... Wait, do you guys smell that? I don't. No, okay, never mind. Sorry. You out of all singers have this, like, people are fascinated by the way that you write songs. I'm telling you, I think learning, at least among gay men, gay group chats being like,
Starting point is 00:17:17 oh my God, Carly Ray Jepson wrote 250 songs for emotion. Crazy. I think it like really implanted in us that like you your output is very intentional and very expansive. I don't know. I'm committed. Yeah. I'm committed to the art of it. But I do feel like probably from the beginning when I first discovered that you could write a song.
Starting point is 00:17:39 Like that songwriting exists really and that I had something to offer to it. I realize that I probably haven't gone through any emotion, big or small, without having to kind of digest it. through a song. And I don't share all of them, but I think I've, as I've gotten older, I've been more bold and brave about sharing the ones that I thought were more personal. I think in the past, I'd be like, oh, this one's for me, this one's for the public. And now I think because I've had people in my circle, like incredible A&Rs and friends and just, I don't know, partner, my partner right now, he's like the guy who's like, let it out. Like, let. He encourages you. Yeah, and I feel, actually, it's very liberating ones. You're like, okay, I thought this was just for me,
Starting point is 00:18:18 but actually other people feel it too. And I don't know. It might be the reason why it's really for everyone. Yeah, yeah. And so I think this album, Day Night is like mostly things that in the past, maybe why I wanted it to not be like an A and a B side is they felt very much like, they're both both things. They're experimental.
Starting point is 00:18:34 They're kind of just everything I love about pop music too. It's a bit of both worlds combined. So I didn't really want to like put one first and call something less important or, I don't know, weird or it's all quite weird actually. But that's what excites me about it. would characterize this album as weird? I do, but I think, I think I quite like, like, I hope I get weirder as I go. I think you have.
Starting point is 00:18:56 Do you know what I mean? Yeah, no, or maybe I've always been that weird, but I'm a little bit more comfortable just sharing it, you know? I hear you. Well, I think that's one of the things that's always been so, like, indicative of you is I really don't like the word quirky, but you have an edge in terms of, like, your humor. Like, I think all the way back to, like, I really like you, like Tom Hanks being in the video,
Starting point is 00:19:17 Just like such a random choice, but also so epic. And it really did, it carried and also it said so much about you without you being the star of the video. And I think that that is not to be like, you know, on the nose about it, but like the emotion carries so much. Like your music is such a character in the room that that can be true. You know what I mean? And I wanted to ask you just because as I was going through your expansive, you know, discography, which is really what it is. It feels so voluminous.
Starting point is 00:19:54 There's like a vortex of pop happening. Do you have a favorite Carly Ray Hook? Like, do you look back and you're like, oh, that was a lick that I am. I can say, CRJ, hate that one. You say that all the time. I mean, I definitely don't. We're asking you to too today. I'm just in the mirror being like, you got that one.
Starting point is 00:20:19 You know, oh gosh, nothing's like coming to mind. I think I do love to laugh. And I think I would more say that I laugh at myself, like later on to be like, I can't believe that I put store out. Like that's such a strange decision. I love that you love store out. But like there's some decisions where I made where I'm like, oh, I really ran with that, like, really far.
Starting point is 00:20:43 Yeah. Like the idea with like now that I found you, which is. It's not like one of my favorite songs, but I'm like, I convinced my label to do like a music video about me being obsessed with a cat. Like what was I thinking? That's perfect though. But like, like, and like catnip, like I got high on the catnip halfway through. Did you actually? And I thought this was a good idea.
Starting point is 00:21:03 And I mean, I look back and I like chuckle. But I feel like I'm like, this was a very specific type of humor that was not that funny. But like I was sleep deprived and we ran with it. We just like ran committed. Is it ever? Is it ever shame or embarrassment or is it mostly just like perplexion? No, it's a delightful like that's so wild that we got that idea through. And I mean, I love to laugh, especially at myself, I think.
Starting point is 00:21:27 Yeah, you have to. Yeah, you got to. Well, especially because it's like you're doing pop music, you know what I mean? You can't take it that seriously. And when Lady Gaga was here, I asked her the same question. I'm like, how much are you laughing in the booth? Like a lot, I would imagine. Well, I mean, the thing is, is I say you can't take it seriously.
Starting point is 00:21:43 And then I follow that up with you do because of the fact that I think, It is such a heart on your sleeve, like high stakes genre of music. Like, people love it and people hate it. I'm involved in both sides of it. I hate a certain song. What is going on? And then I love it. That's crazy.
Starting point is 00:22:02 Which one is this? I don't know. No, sorry. Oh, my God. Is it just an alarm? I was getting a call and I was like silencing. And then maybe I like pressed a button. What do you think about that being his ringtone though?
Starting point is 00:22:11 Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. What is it? Okay. Just for the record, it is called. called, wow. This is not even a song, no, a brief introduction on Dubstep. Oh, it's, wow. That's what it's called.
Starting point is 00:22:28 On Dubstep production by Night Ripper. Okay. Let's just get that. So now that's just a glimpse into. I swear to God, this is, I'm mortified. Okay, hold on. Let's just play this. That's not.
Starting point is 00:22:46 Okay. Does this inspire any hooks? this could take this could honestly go dusk this is twilight this is twilight day and night and more I am bad for you this becomes a session there's no need to be like polite with
Starting point is 00:23:07 that's not my work or anything you need to stop apologizing for yourself yeah that's true Canadian it's a vortex of apologies it's Canadian we can't help it I'm also sorry no I know. Americans don't believe me
Starting point is 00:23:20 when I say like, oh, no, no. And like, it's not, and I don't think Canadians apologizing is disingenuous. No, we're really, really sorry. Where does that come from culturally? Oh, gosh, I don't know. I think, I think, I think it comes from this idea of being polite
Starting point is 00:23:37 is to apologize and really mean it. Even if you kind of like were the person who got run into, you still apologize because it just smooths over the situation and that's polite. Right, that person who ran into you could be having a hard day. Exactly. Yes.
Starting point is 00:23:52 Oh my God, you sound like my mother. Yes. Yes, that's exactly it. That's what it is. Who knows what they're struggling with? Who knows. Being the first to offer the olive branch. Yes, of course.
Starting point is 00:24:03 Yeah, I don't know. What do you think it's from? That's my theory. I want to like tie it back to like first grade or something that like, okay. So in Quebec, we called our teachers by their first names. True in BC? No, no, no, no. Not at all.
Starting point is 00:24:19 Yeah, Mr. and Mrs. Mr. and Mrs. My kindergarten teacher was Joanne. Joanne? First grade teacher, I forget her name. Second grade teacher, I forget her name. Third grade teacher because that's when I moved to the U.S. France.
Starting point is 00:24:32 France. Okay. Her name was France. Her name was France. Her name was Lola. Wow. She was a show girl. But I feel like we were just taught.
Starting point is 00:24:43 Well, also Canadian teachers would get within. in this close of your face. Oh no. And scream at you. Okay, well this is the opposite of like my, yeah, this isn't what I've been told of the Great North. So this is, so that's my, that's where the sorry comes from for me as though I'm like, ugh, like I'm so sorry. Oh, wow.
Starting point is 00:25:02 Can I throw something out there as, can I posit an idea? Yeah. So Canada famously attached to America. America often very braggadocious, like very much like sort of we are American, like see us, comma world. You know what I mean? Like we are here. Do you think maybe the attachment of Canada to America makes Canadians feel a little bit embarrassed?
Starting point is 00:25:22 Like, sorry, sorry, we know that North America can be a lot. I don't know about that. Okay. I don't know. No, I don't know. I like the theory, though. It's an interesting theory. So you guys aren't embarrassed of Americans.
Starting point is 00:25:34 No. No, I married an American. There you go. You know. Tough. Well, lucky for him. You, I think it's that Canadians generally have more space, are in touch with nature. there's, you know, health insurance.
Starting point is 00:25:49 It's like, you're like, you're a little, like, oh, I'm sorry. It's, it's, maybe it's lower stakes. I really don't know why. Or maybe it's like, sorry. Mm. Ooh. Try that. Try it.
Starting point is 00:26:01 I like that. Try it. That's what I'm going to change my sorry too. Sorry to be. Sorry. Yeah. Oh, I think, guys, this is good. This is good.
Starting point is 00:26:09 You have to a different feeling. Yeah. That's a different feeling. Wait, okay, okay, hold on, music video. Speaking of France, thank you for putting Paris on the map. with motivation. Hey, I mean, I think it already had its place, but I appreciate you saying.
Starting point is 00:26:22 And Versailles. Oh, hey, yeah. You know, it's having a huge moment between you and Olivia this year. I mean, it's like popping off like Vegas used to. Truly. What happened? Yeah. No, but exciting.
Starting point is 00:26:33 I mean, honestly, that, I had never been to Versailles when I wrote Versailles. And now you have? And then I knew it was on my list. That's the other thing is I had just watched, what was it, Sophia Coppola's version. Yeah. A much prettier version of. the history, but I was like, oh, there is something so indulgent and sexy about the idea that you can just live for the sake of pleasure only.
Starting point is 00:26:57 And I think we all guiltily want a day or two like that. And so this is sort of the whole concept. And if it has a bad ending, whatever. We'll deal with it later. You know. You know? If your head rolls on the floor after it gets chopped off. Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:27:13 That's why I'm like, not the real version. It is funny to watch it be so like, oh, Versailles, and then you go into history and you're like, you know, this ended in bloodshed. We actually took the tour and it was so interesting to see that within the castle of Versailles where she had everything, she, like, wanted her little, like, cottage garden so she could pretend to be like a peasant woman. You're like, isn't that wild? You had everything and you just wanted, like, a simple life to pretend to, like, cosplay at. Totally. Kind of wild. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:27:43 Yeah. Really? Well, I just feel like they're like, I want to go to Burning Man and just be covered in sand. Yeah, but they end up not having that experience. Right, they're in an RV. I have never been to Burning Man. What's it like? We've never done.
Starting point is 00:28:01 You're burning up the wrong tree. We'll go to Coachella and be like, we're done after the second day. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Coachella's a lot. But it's fun. Have you been? You've been?
Starting point is 00:28:11 Yeah, I like to do a last minute Coachella. Yeah. I'm not like a big, hey, let's plan and do a weekend of it. I'm more like someone's like, hey, last minute, do you want to go? Or like a friend will be like, come see my side. And we're like, all right. Sometimes the butt goes through a lot. I survived, and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them. I'm Elizabeth Smart, and these are the Survivor Files. I just remember this low, taunting voice next to my ear saying, shut up, don't say anything.
Starting point is 00:30:19 Every week, I'm with survivors who live through the unthinkable. I knew if he woke up, without a doubt, he was going to hurt me. I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed, and I just started screaming. They are abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced. but these aren't stories about what's taken from them. There's stories about what it takes to make it out alive. Listen to the Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:30:55 On the new podcast Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I chose option B. I'm Julie Piniero. and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word solita, trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smiled at us. Not a lot of people smile around here.
Starting point is 00:31:30 It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it. It can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind, or wake up to a new version of yourself. So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. If your bookshelf and your For You page
Starting point is 00:31:57 are equally important to your personality, welcome home. This is Prose Society, the weekly podcast that's part book club, part group chat for thought daughters, pop culture obsessives, anyone who thinks Pride and Prejudice and Love Island deserve the same level of discourse. I'm Eli Rallo and every week we're connecting the dots between books, the internet, and the conversations everyone can't stop having.
Starting point is 00:32:21 I'm going to have to look up this story. I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed. From bestselling authors and your favorite book talk creators to the latest pop culture moments, nothing is off the table. It's like if you can hide some real messages inside compelling characters, then that is a Trojan horse. Whether you're looking for literary deep dives, smart pop culture conversations, or a community of readers who love to think a little too much, you're in the right place.
Starting point is 00:32:47 Listen to pro society on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. See you between the pages. Do you like every genre? Like, it feels like, it feels like, no. I mean, what I mean by that is, like, I can appreciate every genre, but I don't think that I listen to every genre. Right, right, right, right. But I love exploring it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:11 Like, my husband's childhood friend has this, like, screaming band. I don't even think, they just make, like, vowel sounds, really. And it's like, no, no, it's like, ah! But they're like, and he was, like, come to my show. And it was one of the best shows I've ever been to. Yeah. I think I was, and I thought I was like, I'm going to blend in with this crowd. So I wore, like, you know, darker colors.
Starting point is 00:33:34 because everyone was like, just like, and I stuck out like a sore thumb. Like, I just, I just, I just, I energetically, you were probably right. I energetically was off. And like, I was trying so hard. Yeah. But I was fascinated. It was just, it was a lot of screaming, but like, I felt whatever is supposed to feel. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:54 Between the smoke machines and like the, you know, the mosh pitting, I was like kind of in, you know. So I think this is a gateway. Like, if you, after day and night, like, like, and a few, years, if you were to release a metal album. Okay. With dubstep in it. It's funny. You should say that that's where I thought I was going to get.
Starting point is 00:34:13 No, I'm just saying. Day night and more. Day night and more. Wait, literally though, I think metal and like, I'll lump that in with like scream adjacent singers. Yeah. Do have control of their instrument in a way where I'm like, wow, because I was shown the disturbed cover of sound of silence.
Starting point is 00:34:34 Okay. To disturb, down with the sickness. Wow. Those guys? Yeah. Sick. I'm so, that was my best. That was good.
Starting point is 00:34:42 Honestly, I felt like we were in the zoo. We were in the zoo. That was in Vortex. I would sample it. Yeah, it was really good. You should sample it. Yeah. I want to cut.
Starting point is 00:34:53 But you, but the, the business. They played. It's this, does anyone know what I'm talking? Do the straight boys know what I'm talking about? Okay, but he knows what I'm talking about. Let's go. Sound of silence. builds, it goes into a full vibrato at the end.
Starting point is 00:35:08 Paul Simon heard it and was like, damn, these people. Like it is, we have to pay respects to these guys, to these men who might seem a little scary and dark and, you know, but like I think they're, it's all coming from a place of like, emotion. Emotion. Yeah, no, no, I mean, I. I think you should explore it as all. Nothing's off.
Starting point is 00:35:32 Nothing's off the table. But I was going to say, DeVotion. I think that I can also appreciate. I think we all can, when we're like, that isn't for me, but it's really well done. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:35:42 Like, I don't necessarily love the genre wouldn't put it on like in my life. Like what I think is a very hard thing to get right is the mixture of country and pop. Like when it's purely country, I'm like down for some Hank Williams.
Starting point is 00:35:56 When it's like pop, pop, okay. But like pop, like Shania Twain? Yeah, perfect. Bow down. How did you figure that out? Canadian Queen. Is she your Canadian queen?
Starting point is 00:36:07 She's one of them. Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely. I mean, Celaine Dion as well. Yeah, Salianna. Thank you. Like, that's the way it is. The Come On Over album is exactly what we're talking about. It's perfect pop country.
Starting point is 00:36:17 It's like, and she would do, she would do like the red green versions too. She did like a, was Pokemon. It was up red version or up, up green version. She had the double album. Yes. Damn it, it wasn't my idea. Sorry. There's something happening with these double albums
Starting point is 00:36:33 in the Canadian queen. In the Canadian Queen. Sphere, but I remember that. Well, she had like, like, remember that song? I'm gonna get you if I got it in time. Gonna get you good? Yes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:36:45 Red and green version. So good. So good. Speaking of albums, I think this is a great time to ask you the culture question. Carly Ray Jepson, what is the culture that made you say culture is for me? Spice Girls. And I love why you gave this answer because you said it was what saved you, not saved you. Not saved you, but it was your escape in a house of James Taylor.
Starting point is 00:37:07 I mean, I mean, okay, all respect to James Taylor. Of course. No, but I think you are the conversions of those two. I think you are James Taylor and Spice Girls combined. Period. That is maybe the greatest compliment I've ever received in my musical career. I give it, honestly. I feel like I just need to, like, touch me.
Starting point is 00:37:22 Come get time to tell with me. I believe this to be true. Wow. Wow. But, like, speak on, like, that. Well, I did. I grew up in, like, very, folk influence houses. So everything from Van Morrison,
Starting point is 00:37:37 Joni Mitchell, Lauren Cohen, like really good music. Bruce Springsteen, the Cat Stevens, and then I heard the spice girls and it was like trying sugar for the first time
Starting point is 00:37:46 after being given only really healthy food. And I was just so like, you know what I mean? Like I was just like, what is this candy? And I all of a sudden I needed to like paint my nails
Starting point is 00:37:58 all of a sudden and shave my legs and I just wanted to experience the joy. and fun and saliness of choreographing to a spice girl's song with my girlfriends until the week hours and wasn't that a time to be alive? It really was. Like the cherry
Starting point is 00:38:13 chapstick, come on. Come on. Cherry chapstick. There's this like frivolity when people talk about like girly pop. It's like well God forbid women enjoy and do something. You know what I mean? It's like the spice girls like for us were just like
Starting point is 00:38:31 I mean we were miles and miles away from each other at that time. But we had the same exact response to it, which was, oh my God, the first time I read liner notes was for those albums. I just, I actually didn't even know their name. I had heard the song on the radio. Wanted to be?
Starting point is 00:38:46 At yes, and I went to the record store and I said to the guy with like, who had never, and I was like, there's this new band. Yeah. I don't know what they're called, but it's like, tell me what you want, what you really? And he was like right this way. Oh!
Starting point is 00:38:59 It was like that with Britney Spears too. There was a day before they existed. And then there was a day out of it existed. And then it was like, put it in my veins. Yeah. Yeah. And I was very excited. And I think my parents were like, I don't know about this.
Starting point is 00:39:10 Like what's happening to our daughter? And I was like, I don't know either. Yeah. I remember my dad being like, I don't get them. Yeah. I don't get them. Yeah. But like that's so, I guess that's, in like a post-Madonna world that's like there is a blueprint
Starting point is 00:39:27 for it. It's like, it's like, it's just times five. It's like these like empowered women, but there's five of them. And they're all representing a different thing. But the hooks are the hooks are the, like it's Max Martin at the end of the day, just doing the Wizard of Oz thing that he does, which is just make magic happen. That's a great really. And they, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:39:43 Well, they really embodied it. You know what I? A hundred percent. It makes sense that you say like this was formative for you because it's the same type of thing. It's a real commitment to having fun and having a good time. But also in the music, there were real messages. I remember when I heard two become one. And I was like, wow, they're really saying something like important about like safe sex.
Starting point is 00:40:07 Safe sex. Like that's what that song is about in a way. Yeah. They gave it the whole like bridge, like bridge, I guess. I think the highlight of my pride 2019, World Pride in New York City before COVID, this was like the thing I held on to so tightly during the pandemic still do is at Tyson underling through a party. He went from, who do you think you are? into cut to the feeling. And I was, I've never been happier in my life.
Starting point is 00:40:38 Yeah. Wow, I love being in their playlist. Like, I just like being in the. So Ty Sunderland, this is a sort of capital Gigi gay guy. Yeah. And he is going to put Carly Ray in the playlist next to Spice Girls. You have to know that every gay man we told that you were coming was like, can you please just tell her? I was like, I know.
Starting point is 00:40:58 How important. It's like we're meeting the Pope. It's like, everyone's like, tell her that my family is sick. And yeah. Can CRJ pray on us? Can she pray on us? But I want to ask the classic who were you at the time? Who?
Starting point is 00:41:17 Which spice girl? And then who are you at the time and who are you now? If that's changed. I mean, weren't we all baby at the beginning? We kind of were all baby. Because like we wanted the lollipop and the pigtails. And like we didn't really understand any like sexual. innuendo yet about like what that meant.
Starting point is 00:41:33 It was more just like, I'm the baby. She was the easiest one to get into on the ground floor. She was a nice starter point. But then at some point casually, I don't know why I would think my father had authority on this, but he said that he thought Jerry Spice was like the brains behind the business, like the business woman. And I always was like, well, I want to be the brains behind the business. So I'm Ginger.
Starting point is 00:41:59 I switched. I was like, I want to be. Ginger Spice because I want to own the operation. Yes. You know? Well, she was the one that was really coming out and being like, listen, feminism, girl power. I carry the message. I am wearing the flag.
Starting point is 00:42:14 But what I have questions about now is like, where did my father get this intel? She has executive realness. She just like, did she just like, with the face of it. Yeah. I think she really was like the spokesperson in the sense of like they would pass the mic to her and like a group interview setting. But wait, is your dad like a music buff?
Starting point is 00:42:34 Like, does he like, yeah, well, like, yes. I mean, absolutely. Well, so then, I think he just probably had this general curiosity about like, who are these people? Like, what are they about? Yeah, no. But anyways, it instilled in me. I wanted to be in the business of music as well.
Starting point is 00:42:47 First time being a redhead right now? Actually, second. Second. Oh. No one saw it, but I was a redhead when I was Cinderella on Broadway. Oh, yes. Under a wig. So no one could see.
Starting point is 00:42:59 It was just me living my little, You were in redhead in Greece. You were French. You were French. You were blonde. I had a black kind of mullet thing growing out during. Oh, this was during a motion. So then I just had all the pink wigs and stuff.
Starting point is 00:43:13 Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, it was a pink wig, that's right. Pink and orange. There was a lot of, there was a pineapple wig. I mean, she was a beauty school dropout. She really. That's kind of the joy of Frenchie. The joy of French.
Starting point is 00:43:24 That's maybe like, I think it's like the secret favorite number of the show. All I need is in a. Tom Kit. Ladies and gentlemen. He is working on 10 things with me. Okay, this is a perfect segue. Stop everything. We got to ask.
Starting point is 00:43:38 What can you tell us? About 10 things I hate about you, the musical? This is crazy. Lena Dunham and Carlyway Jepson, it's crazy. Lena Dunham and you. It's crazy. This is like everyone's going to explode, but how did it come about?
Starting point is 00:43:51 Have you always loved it? It's like a whole little team of Avengers, to be honest. Because I also, like my writing partner on the music side of it is Ethan Greska. Do you guys know? He's been. He's like huge, huge, he's like, a Phoebe Bridgers and the writing.
Starting point is 00:44:04 Amazing. And he's just like, his voice in his own right, when we're ready little characters. I'm like, oh my God, it's amazing to hear things come together. And then Jessica Wong and Lena Dunham
Starting point is 00:44:14 and then obviously, do you know Christopher Wilden? He is like, oh my gosh, I have such a creative crush on him. He's our director and choreographer. He comes from the world of ballet, so he's bringing like a whole bunch of... A director choreographer is a really smart thing
Starting point is 00:44:30 because it's incredible. Yeah, it's such a huge advantage to a production. And then Tom Kit is our musical director. That is incredible. It's just, it is really so dreamy. Mike Bosner brought us all together and it's like, which is in the room kind of.
Starting point is 00:44:44 I'm sort of still doing that like, am I allowed to be here? How did this happen? Oh my God. This is wild. But it's such a dream project because what a cult classic? I mean.
Starting point is 00:44:54 And then to be able to think about when and how music participates in this story is just so exciting. Ten things I hate about. you is having its cultural re-emergency again, I feel because Julia Stiles is on dancing with the stars, and I feel like she is gonna tear it up. And like, it's- I mean, say the last dance.
Starting point is 00:45:10 Yeah. For her table moment. Oh, yeah. I can't wait. Was she O. She was Ophelia? The modern Ophelia. No.
Starting point is 00:45:19 Othello. Yeah, yeah. The modern Ophelia didn't end well. The fate of Ophelia. Well, I guess Othello didn't know either. But it also didn't think like a story about like a raging woman. Yeah. hasn't, it's exciting to see.
Starting point is 00:45:32 Was Katz-Stradford important for you in seeing the movie when you first saw it? I mean, yes, it was so exciting to see a woman just kind of like that, who was so comfortable in her own power and didn't really give a shit about what anyone thought of her. That was just like, come on, let's- We were saying the other day, like I was talking about this
Starting point is 00:45:51 with some people and we were talking about how Julia Stiles always carried like an intelligence and a maturity, even when she was really young, Like she was young in those movies. Of course. And she always seemed like older. Like she was perfect casting for that because she had so much wisdom.
Starting point is 00:46:08 I agree. You know what else? We were doing a Google search of the ages of some of these actors when the, because we've watched the movie now a bigillion times. Yeah. Yes. That makes no sense.
Starting point is 00:46:18 Didn't he seem like he was in his like 30? Because you would think, like are we 30s? Like yeah. They cast older people to play teens, but that was not one of them. No, no, no, no. It's wow.
Starting point is 00:46:29 The union must have been, what, like 15? Like, or something. I actually forget the number of that one. Right, right, right. Yeah, crazy. We can look it up. Yeah. It is such an important movie.
Starting point is 00:46:38 It was my first exposure to Alison Janie. Oh, wow. Like, you're going to, like, there's just so many good characters in that because it's Shakespeare, but it's like, I don't know. That's the other thing. That's the other thing. It's Shakespeare. And we forget that it's, like, based off the taming on the street.
Starting point is 00:46:53 But that is part of the fun, too. It's just, like, mix all those, those bits together. Those bits together. Those bits together. What does he sing at the risers? I love you, baby. No, it's, well, yeah, but it's can't keep my eyes. Yeah, yeah, that's what the song is.
Starting point is 00:47:08 Which made me, you don't have to confirm or deny if you're using that, but just, I think everyone's holding their breath for, and I mean, this is not to add pressure, but it's like, I'm sure there will be a number of her reading the, the son or the poem or whatever at the end. Oh my God. Or something. Or something. Can I either confirm or deny. Like, I should just start saying that a lot about the time of it. Yeah, can't confirm or deny. Because you've got to come and see it.
Starting point is 00:47:30 I know, of course. But is there like a targeted opening for it? Do we know? I think pretty much like a year from now is our target. Yeah. So you're like here, but you're in it right now in a way. Oh, I've been in it for. Yeah, they take a long time.
Starting point is 00:47:43 They take a long time. But it's, it's crucial to get right. It's an art firm that's so important to handle it with care. So yeah, it's been, it's so fun too because in my world I'll get into like an album and I'm like, okay, like, what do I? Where is my world right now? And this is such a different thing because you, You're getting to kind of, I've never really gotten to write for like men before.
Starting point is 00:48:03 That's interesting. Yeah, it's really fun to like think about how different people would, I don't know, go through something. How is a fuckboy thing? Truly, you should see our text threads. Like you were like, oh, I've dated this guy. Oh, wow. You and Lena? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:21 Oh, yeah. What of our great textors, not to brag, but she's a good text. She is a good text. No, it's good. Does Cole give you insights on men? Oh, yeah. I mean, Cole, I mean, I think I married him because he's probably not like other men. I see.
Starting point is 00:48:38 And the best way possible. Not that I mean, I love men. But Cole is just like, but. Love men. Love man. But he's, he's, I don't think he takes in exactly the same way in the way that he thinks, which is really surprising. Well, he's a creative man. He's a creative guy.
Starting point is 00:48:57 Yeah. Yeah. He's a gentle soul. What's his sign? He's a Pisces. I am too. What is yours? Oh, I'm a Scorpio.
Starting point is 00:49:03 Hey. Scorpio Canadian. This is good. Are we allowed to celebrate? Because I heard that we're like the worst sign. No, here's the thing. Don't believe that. No, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:49:12 No, no, no. I just got a reading from Colum Adele, Quircosmos. It's like Scorpio is a sign of privacy regulation. Okay. And so it's like you get to treat, you get to have this. And I feel like that's your thing for sure. Yeah, yeah. I think you've kept such a healthy distance.
Starting point is 00:49:26 And especially, and we, this is not me, opening up the conversation, but it's like, I think with the way that you and Cole are like keeping your family life to yourselves is like, and I have a million things to say about this, but it's like part of that is so indicative of this. Scorpio's and demonize, they're both in my chart all over the place and people clutch their damn pearls and I'm like, enough. It's enough. That's quite enough.
Starting point is 00:49:50 I feel like when I've ever, I've done like the quick search of it, it's like power hungry, competitive. And I'm like, I don't mean, those things are true. And they're also not negative. Not negative. But more like, I mean, I picked Ginger Spice because she ran the show. And I liked that. I was like, oh, God.
Starting point is 00:50:09 You don't even be sheepish about wanting control. Creative. Exactly. Control. Exactly. That's important. And also because when you know you have something to give, it's not a bad thing to seek out a stage to give that. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:50:23 That's a sweet thing to say. I think that what your music really does. And I like, again, I come to you, like, we come to you as fans of yours for like over a decade now. But you provide such an amazing emotional landscape. Like I was listening to, I decided today I had to walk to the studio, even though it was a little muggy and hot. Because I was like, I need to be stomping the streets to Carly Ray. Like you fill our lives with a lot of like very vivid. Of course I'm going to say it, emotion.
Starting point is 00:50:59 Just the vortex of emotions. And that is, but that is true. That's, I feel like I could cry. And I don't mean that it like just hearing that. It's so sweet. And I, it's funny. I think why I feel like, huh about it is the truth of it is I remember feeling when I was little. And I think we all felt this way.
Starting point is 00:51:20 Almost like our emotions were like these things that were bad, like that were like needed to be tamed. Like did you grow up in a house where a little bit like it was almost like rude if you had to. Comedians may have different answers to those. Big of a thing. And I don't think my parents meant anything bad by it. But it was sort of just this almost like you have to be careful when something gets out of hand.
Starting point is 00:51:43 And I think that there's truth to that. I think as an adult you should be able to control a little bit of how you move through the life. But I feel like music is this beautiful place where you don't have to. And I'm so lucky I found it because I can let things run wild. And then to hear you say that there's like a connectivity to it where you're like, I get it too sometimes. Because I feel like we all have little mini soap operas happening inside our hearts.
Starting point is 00:52:07 And it's just nice to like go there sometimes, right? I want you to love now that I found you more. No. No, that I found you. When you come in with that like, like, like, Your key choices, my friend. I just, yeah. Honestly, they're so smart.
Starting point is 00:52:22 They're so musical. The way that you jump around in your music, it's surprising. It feels euphoric. And also one of my favorite songs of yours is Party for One. Of course. I love Party for One. I actually wrote down,
Starting point is 00:52:35 I was, of course, listening to everything, and I was just like, oh, got to make sure I mention this one. Got to make sure I mention this one. Starting point is 00:52:56 Bell, connection is everything. When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and held captive for nine months. I survived, and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them. I'm Elizabeth Smart, and these are the survivor files. I just remember this low, taunting voice next to my ear saying, shut up. Don't say anything. Every week, I'm with survivors who live through the unthinkable. I knew if he woke up, without a doubt, he was going to hurt me.
Starting point is 00:53:32 I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed, and I just started screaming. They are abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced. But these aren't stories about what's taken from them. There's stories about what it takes to make it out alive. I was asked in an interview the other day, they're like, what did you mean when you said making love to myself? I'm jilling off. I was like, I did not answer, but I would like to, yes. Jilling off.
Starting point is 00:56:10 You're gilling off. Yeah, quite clearly. Yeah. We have to spell it out. Well, it's because some people, they just, you know, they want the sound bite, Carly. Oh, I see. They want the sound bite.
Starting point is 00:56:18 Oh, well, you have to hear it. now. There you go. Well, you don't even have to say jilling off. We did that for you. Thank you. But they won't say that. Wait, wait, do you smell that? I don't have, I don't smell like, like chickery. I'm concerned you're going to have a stroke or something. I feel very scary. Whatever, it's fine. I feel worried. Well, now that I found it, no, it's fine. Don't worry. Everybody, it's fine. Now that I found you, I think maybe you feel a certain way about it because it was used as like promo for something else. What was it used for it?
Starting point is 00:56:50 The Queer Eye Season 3. Oh, that's the best. That makes me love it more. Of course. Okay. We'll get along. Is there drama? Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:56:59 There's so much drama with those gays all the time. Don't worry about the drama. Don't worry about that. It doesn't concern you. I don't know about the drama. I don't know about the drama. You don't know about the drama? You don't know about the drama?
Starting point is 00:57:07 And there's always new drama with those queer eyes. It's like they're making it out. It's like a vortex of drama. It's a vortex of drama. I smell Chickery. Like it's cold, like New Orleans style cold brew. Okay.
Starting point is 00:57:20 What the hell? I don't know. What kind of cold brew are you drinking? Chickory. Chickory. Okay. Oh, no, just look it up. Could it be?
Starting point is 00:57:29 No. Okay. What is that? Okay. We're going to reveal. Oh, no, no. You would like that actually. Can I?
Starting point is 00:57:33 Can I? Yes, please. Actually, what, that's really good. Oh. Oh, man. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:38 Get the chickory smell out of here. Very nice. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:41 Yeah. Yeah. This is the time we revealed you what the secrets are of this of this. There was secrets happening during the episode. Shoot, I missed it. No, no, no, no. Well, that's the point. Mine was really crazy.
Starting point is 00:57:52 Was it that you were smelling chickery? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, okay. He kind of leaned on it. He leaned on it very hard at the end. At the end, and I did, because I forgot to interspers it throughout. And I was like, wait, that's just, I can't do it. Oh, and I look.
Starting point is 00:58:02 Like, maybe you needed like a hospital visit. Okay, cool, go, okay. Okay, what was mine? What was my weird thing that I was doing the whole time? I snuck it in. I really don't know. I really overused the word vortex. Oh, okay, I see it now.
Starting point is 00:58:18 But I didn't see it. You did it very sneakily. I was sneaky about it. This is a new bit we're doing. I love it. We did this at Christmas with my parents. Oh, yeah, what was it? I think we saw it online, and it was my sister-in-law's idea.
Starting point is 00:58:34 Where we would just, we all of us, my brother and my sister and all of our partners, we'd each have this different line that we would try with our parents to see if our parents would notice. Did they? My sisters was to keep saying, I think we saw somebody do this on, we thought it was funny, but my sisters was supposed to keep saying,
Starting point is 00:58:50 I have an announcement. And then she would never announce anything. Britney Bateman quoted. And my brothers was to do like a slow clap. Just out of me. And then we were all supposed to participate in the clap for no reason. And your parents were like, that's weird. And they were just like clapping too sometimes.
Starting point is 00:59:07 It's like very confused. What was yours? You surely remember yours. What was mine? I think Harrison's and mine was a combination of talking about whether or not aliens were real or not, but just like constantly. So these are all things that you've named that are immensely noticeable, like a slow clap. I have an announcement. Or like you announcing that there was a chicory smell.
Starting point is 00:59:33 Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, I think your game is better. I think we like riffed on ours from something we saw, but we thought it was funny. Well, let's just stop for a second and actually answered that question. Are there aliens? Yeah. Oh, I mean, you're asking me? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:47 What do you think? Of course I'm asking you. I mean, on Earth or like in the world? I mean, in the universe? Sounds like you want us to answer. Oh, no, no, no. No, I'm asking that that specific question. Because I don't know if I think that they're on the earth.
Starting point is 01:00:03 Right. But in the universe. Yeah, yeah, you think they're on. That sounds exciting. And I want you to not think about the universe. Okay. I feel like that's a cop out for everyone. Because I always say, well, surely there's other.
Starting point is 01:00:12 life out there. Okay, yeah, that is a good, I was gonna say that I'm glad I didn't now because, yeah. We're talking about are they here and potentially in the room? Are they in the room? Oh, oh, oh. It's Becca.
Starting point is 01:00:24 It's Becca. She's an alien. I'm sure you've met people where you're like, that's an alien. I feel like that more about like vampires. Like this person has not aged at all. She's vampiric. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:36 I get that. Names. No, you don't have to. Well, maybe you're a vampire. My girlfriend Molly. My girlfriend Molly's my baby. She's a vampire. Well, I hope you enjoyed those secrets.
Starting point is 01:00:51 I did. Thank you. Because it's not, it's running all the way up to the line into prank culture, which we are not a fan of. Have you ever had a guest to do it on you? Not yet. You're only our third guest we've tried this on. Yeah. So they just like say some, you know, I wish I had known.
Starting point is 01:01:08 I could have. But here's what I'll say. This is the first time that we've gotten. the secrets past the guest. Oh. So I'm the dumbest? No, no, no, no, no, no. Because I think, I honestly, no, but it just means we're getting better at it.
Starting point is 01:01:20 I'm pretty dumb with it. We're getting better at it. Okay, you aren't very good. With Troy Savon, it was I was calling him Troe casually. Oh, okay. And then Matt would say the word correctamundo. And then with our previous guest, Spike I'm binder and Honey Pluton, I chickened out of mine. Mine was originally going to be saying Vortex.
Starting point is 01:01:38 Okay. And then Matt's, which she executed a few times, was. like trying to kill a fly in the room that wasn't there. I like that. I like that. And they were like, we don't see it. And I was like,
Starting point is 01:01:48 I don't know what to say. I like it. I like it a lot. Okay, I want to try to catch them before. I'm gonna, I'm gonna, this is my new game.
Starting point is 01:01:56 Thank you. And you can play on home too. You can play it too. Yeah. This is why we don't reveal it until. Actually, it's a good idea. And then people can like say the second
Starting point is 01:02:05 that they got it. Yeah, exactly. Like I got it at 12 seconds. I got it at a minute 30. There's no prize or anything. Ooh. There's no pride.
Starting point is 01:02:13 No. You know what? You want one of these? Yes, I will. Take that. Take that. Monday. Monday.
Starting point is 01:02:22 And, and night. Good night. September 18. It's so damn good. It's your opus. Oh, wow. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:02:34 It is. I feel like I came here today and I'm just going to leave with like red cheeks. You're being very sweet. Thank you so much. Well, we love you. And honestly, we have good news about Spice Girls culture too because isn't Spice World
Starting point is 01:02:46 going to be available to stream soon? They've been saying this for years. They've been saying for a very long time. Are you kidding? No, because you... The BHS, I owned that. And it's like, you can't watch it if you want to watch it. Like, it's crazy. It's like not out there. I recently introduced my niece Ivy to the Spice Girls
Starting point is 01:03:02 and when we did our little dance performance. I was like, I have something you might like. It was really fun to see her discovering my one joy as a child, you know. Did it hit? It hit. Yeah, yeah, she got it.
Starting point is 01:03:16 She also, she also did come to me and say, Auntie Carly, I know a song that you know and saying, call me maybe to me. And that was very weird because I was like, I've had a lot of people do this cover, but you weren't born. This is wild. She's like, do you know it? I'm like, I'm familiar. I do know it.
Starting point is 01:03:32 I know it. I know that one. Yeah. So just to speak on that song because it's one of the biggest songs of all time casually, when you were writing that. Do you feel like I don't know what to do? Keep it, keep it. Put it wherever.
Starting point is 01:03:45 There you go. When you were writing that song, were you like, there's no way. Or were you like, there's a way. Oh, gosh. Well, I mean, I don't know how to answer that totally. You have to understand. There's something embarrassing about the answer because I had some wild confidence about myself when I was a child that I was just going to be a singer.
Starting point is 01:04:07 I didn't realize how hard it might be. I just really felt like this was in the cards for me and then I remember I was little orphananny in my elementary school and on mission a small small town in Canada called Mission and on closing night I remember saying to my parents what if I'm just this child star? What if I just have peaked?
Starting point is 01:04:32 And they were like nobody knows who you are I was like oh God like it's over for me now But then I guess my point is that when you're like, did call me, like, I had been trying so hard. Yeah. And every song I was like, could this be the thing? Could this be the thing? I hope this is the thing.
Starting point is 01:04:51 But hoping this was the thing was just like, I hope I made it into the top 10 in Canadian radio. Right, right, right, right. The idea of breaking it out into the world was like this whole other. Yeah. Like, I don't know, like future dream. Yeah. Not a reality that felt tangible. So the fact that it exploded and then like brought me into other countries in such a way and like opened the whole wide world to me because I had really never even traveled significantly before this.
Starting point is 01:05:18 So all of a sudden, boom. Yeah. It was boom. It was so no, to answer your question in a simpler way, I had no idea that that's what we were making. And how could you? It was like being hit by lightning. Because you talked to some people on there like, yeah, when we had this song, we knew it was the single, it would perform, et cetera. But with Call Me Maybe, it's such an interesting case
Starting point is 01:05:39 because it feels like one of those songs that everyone heard and they're like, hey, yeah. And then it was like the second, the third, the fourth time, it was like, oh, it's a monster smash. It's sneaky. I love a sneaky song. But I also think it was a lot of just luck, too, with the timing of things.
Starting point is 01:05:54 Because I feel like you can have a song and it doesn't totally happen that way. I feel like we had so many things in our corner. Justin Bieber being one of them. Yeah, totally. And then like when Twitter was kind of, you know, just becoming what it was at the time. And one tweet led out, it was just like wildfire happening.
Starting point is 01:06:12 And I kind of was like caught at the viral thing. In the fury of it. Yeah. And it was, it still is like one of those wild things were like, what a roller coaster. That was nuts. Truly. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:23 Well, I just remember, it's one of those songs where to me I was like, this is going, I, well, I don't know that it's gonna be, I have no foresight until like this is gonna be massive, but I just knew that this is a perfect pop song before it even hit the chorus. What? In the pre-corrhors. as soon as I heard
Starting point is 01:06:38 Hot Night, Wind was blowing, Rip Jeanskin was shown, as soon as I heard that lyric, I was like, something is happening. James Taylor meets Spice Girls. James Taylor meets Spice Girls. I really feel this way. When you said that answer, I was like, oh, that's so funny, I love when people
Starting point is 01:06:57 sort of tell on themselves. And it's like the songwriter impulse and your folk background with the desire to go forward. it and have fun really do meet and make you who you are. Okay, but you just touched on a thing that I love, which I don't ever really talk about, but the act of being the pursuer, like the person who is the bold one, to actually step out and say that you like somebody or that you want somebody, even if they don't react well,
Starting point is 01:07:29 that feeling when you're so emboldened to like step outside of yourself and do something brave, I think it's a really powerful energy. That runs throughout all your stuff. Well, have you done that in life? Have you ever been the person who's like, I'm just doing the... I'm trying to be more now. Don't you feel so proud of yourself, even if you bomb? Get this.
Starting point is 01:07:48 You do, right? No, truly, true. You're never like, I'm an idiot. You're like, I did that thing. You really, well, here's the thing. It's important you say that because I think we should feel like that more. Because I feel like in today's kind of world where everything's, you know, like even podcast now, we're on camera now. You know, it's like it all feels like it gets a little bit.
Starting point is 01:08:06 bit harder when everyone feels so visible. Yeah. But we shouldn't lose that impulse to go. No. To want. I mean, yes, you were so excited your microphone. But I agree with you. I really think that there's something exciting about that.
Starting point is 01:08:22 It makes you feel very alive. It makes you kind of know your own kind of power. And I don't think that anybody ever sees it other than like kind of like, wow. You know, you can't not be complimented even if you're like not interested. You're like, wow, thank you. Well, this is the thing. about shame, which is like, I think people, there's a fear of doing that because there's like an expectation of shame afterwards, but like ever since the comeback season three, ever since,
Starting point is 01:08:46 ever since the final scene where she's like, oh, I don't feel humiliated. Like, you have to, you have to agree to be humiliated and I never signed up. I love that line. You just never sign up for. And I genuinely, like, from call me maybe, run away with me. And like, basically, I'm just like, these are all songs that are like, are imploring. It's like, I'm doing something. And I'm doing something and it's up to you it's like call me maybe run away with me like like take me to the feeling I want to cut to the feel it's all it's all proactive and like affirmative it is all like affirmative in the way that it's like I am doing something to push this along and I think I don't know about you but in my actual personal life I remember the moments with such joy where I did step
Starting point is 01:09:35 outside my comfort level to go and do something wild. Do you know what I'm talking about? Of course I do. Yeah. It's like it's because unfortunately it feels rare. It's rare. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:09:46 It's kind of interesting too to think about you as a musical theater writer now because you write so much from I want. So and I'm going to do that that's like very propulsive. And so that makes it even more exciting to know that's something that you're going to. That's the thing that's so fun about a musical is you're looking at a story and you're like when are words not enough? When words aren't enough and it needs to be sung, it's like that's sort of an important time for it to begin.
Starting point is 01:10:12 You know, and they're like, I don't know. That's, I can't. You guys have to come. No, of course, we are. We are literally already there. Multiple times. Even like Kat Stafford is like not someone who says, I want too much.
Starting point is 01:10:24 You know what I mean? Yeah, she talks a little bit more about what she doesn't want for sure. But I think she has some desire. Because underneath there's a, there's so much more. There's so much. There's so much. Yeah. But before we move into, I don't think so honey, I have one last question to ask you,
Starting point is 01:10:38 which is do you, what do you recall about and what was your experience as a Canadian Idol contestant? Oh, great question. I remember the night before you line up in a mall for the beginning, right? You line up in a mall to audition. So it's like a fairly humiliating start, which I think is a good introduction. Yeah. Because it's like, are you ready to sit? in this feeling a little bit, but publicly.
Starting point is 01:11:05 But the truth is, I'm so glad I did it. I don't think anything else would have happened in my life had I not said yes to that. And a little bit of the sign up of some, you know, public humiliation. Totally. Is that you kind of are like, do I have the skin for this? Like, can I handle, it's like a kind of a good sort of university round of like, okay, I know how I feel by myself.
Starting point is 01:11:31 and other people can have, and I had a fairly nice run, to be honest. You came in thirds? Yeah. But I feel like I kind of got the cake and ate it too because you get that exposure and then you also don't have the contract and then you can kind of go and do what you want with it afterwards.
Starting point is 01:11:45 So it was like very, very perfect for what I needed. But the actual ability to stand on stage and be like, all right, and then be publicly judged. You either are down or you're not. And I think I learned pretty quickly that I, I was like, oh, this is rough. But I came out of it being like, okay, I know something about myself. Like I can kind of, a little bit of both.
Starting point is 01:12:12 I can handle it, but I have to like be careful how I move forward. And I think that's also scripted sort of how I move through. The music business is like a little less leaning into a celebrity and a little bit more, hopefully, into the artistry of stuff. And I will do. Yeah, a little bit. Yeah, just for my comfort of it. because I can't handle too much of it, but I also understand that it goes hand in hand with if you want to share the music.
Starting point is 01:12:36 Yeah, totally. That's why it's nice to do this, because this is nice. Well, the thing is, like, we're just so happy that you're here because, like, truly, I mean, we mentioned at the top of the episode, but it's been 10 years of us doing this podcast. We're now at 10 and a half years. That is what? Congratulations. Thank you.
Starting point is 01:12:55 That's amazing. But you have been such a constant throughout the entire thing. And with so many guests, coming in, like, talking about, like, I mean, you and, like, how much your music, like, has soundtracked the last decade. And just truly, I mean, it's a real thing to say thank you for everything you've given us. Get Bell, Pure Fiber Internet with Crave, Netflix, and Disney Plus from $94 a month. It's just my, so when I submitted my tape for SNL, you send it a tape, and then you get called in for a showcase round, which is in front of an audience. Crazy. And you, you know, you do all these characters, and there's blackouts, and there's, like, music in between each, you know, costume change where you're like switching wigs and stuff. And people had different, like, you know, people picked like four tracks where, you know, oh, these are my songs and blah, blah, blah.
Starting point is 01:17:04 Every single one of my blackout tracks was the beginning of run away with me. No. And by the end, people were just like, ha, ha, ha, like, oh, my God, this is like, it's this guy. And, like, and that was, like one of the most, like, thrilling days of my life because I, like, I did really well and it advanced me to the next round. And I was like, but I just associate you with that night that was like quite, you know, pivotal for me. Where it was just run away with me, run away with me, run away with me, run away with me, and I was like, oh my God, Carly was like in the room. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 01:17:36 Like, just a dovetail on what Matt's saying. It's like it's incredibly meaningful. It's like an important song for you as the performer to like, like, doing those showcases. All you want to hear in the blackout while you're putting a new wig on or something is a song that you love that's going to like push you forward. I feel like it's a very important energy right before you go on stage. I used to actually try. It was funny because my band
Starting point is 01:17:58 and I would always go on stage and dance before and then we'd go and run and have a little handshake and go. But one time we decided we were going to change up the energy and like, you know, be calm. We were going to meditate together. We had the sleepiest show for our lives.
Starting point is 01:18:13 Sometimes that's dangerous. We cannot do that ever again. We got to dance again. Move meditation to after the day. I know. That's for after. In the cool down. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:18:24 Exactly. It was like a 10-minute bad idea. Oh, my God. I'm sure it was just great. What also is going to be great is I don't think so, honey. This is our segment of the show where we pop off for 60 seconds about something that deserves it in culture. I have something. I think you might like this.
Starting point is 01:18:41 It's about a word. Okay. I love that. Is it vortex? It's not vortex. I enjoy the word vortex as we've seen. But I'm ready to go. This is I don't think so honey.
Starting point is 01:18:52 And, oh, sorry, I don't know why I opened my camera. Okay, here we go. This is I don't think so honey. This is Matt Rogers' I don't think so honey. This is Matt Rogers' I don't think so honey the word extravaganza. Oh. I have decided it's a bit too much. No.
Starting point is 01:19:06 No, it's just the gonzah of it all. Like, I don't know where the root of the word extravaganza comes from. It probably just comes from etymology in drag race. No, and I think, by the way, I think that that's where it comes from. And I think that RuPaul's Drag Race should continue to use the word extravaganza. And I love it for Roo. But the other day it was described actually to talk about my Christmas show, which is on sale right now in pre-sale. And it goes on sale September 10th.
Starting point is 01:19:34 So please come. But it was described as an extravaganza. And I'm like, can we just call it an event? I don't think so, honey, the word extravaganza. I think it sort of announces a bit too much. And extravaganza, I mean, as I'm doing it right now, I'm like, should it take that much mouth energy to say? the what it is, which is just like, fun time. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 01:19:54 Extravaganza, I don't think so, honey. It's extra... Vaganza. That's one minute. Very good. Wow. I just like, was, I saw it in Word, and I was like, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:20:07 You convinced me. You convinced me. It's too much, yeah. Extravaganza. Or it can only be used when it really is that thing. Exactly, like don't call something extravaganza, and then I show up and it's like some streamers and balloons. I was promised an extravaganza.
Starting point is 01:20:20 No, no, no, no, exactly. Exactly. It can fall flat really fast. It can fall flat really fast. Yeah. But I just want to clarify. Point of clarification. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:20:27 You think extravaganza comes from drag race? I was being a little facetian. I'm sorry. I was being a little, you know. I was a short of extra. No, I don't, but I would like to know. Becca, can you look up the etymology of the word extravaganza? Is it Spanish?
Starting point is 01:20:42 Italian? It's Italian. Extravaganza. That makes sense. Okay. All right. I'm sorry, I'll see. Oh, sorry.
Starting point is 01:20:49 I thought it was amazing. up word that like I thought it was like a Manex spectacular but it's a real word and I apologize to the nation of Italy. What? There you go. You should, I think you want to take your beef to the word hullabaloo. You think so? I think that's what you're, I think
Starting point is 01:21:04 that's what you take issue with. On the next episode. On the next episode. I actually love hollow blue. I think you should try to sneak that in as the game. Yeah. Oh, that's great. Yeah. That's a good. Good good. Thank you. Oh, this is actually great. Oh, you're starting this new tradition, which is the guest gives us the game for the next episode. I mean, I don't know if that's causing some chaos. No, no.
Starting point is 01:21:20 Yeah, no, you like it. Call us chaos, though. Oh, I like this. This is the best podcast ever. Print it. Clip it. Clip it. That's our, that's, that's on the poster.
Starting point is 01:21:29 Are you ready to do I don't think so honey the segment? I'm ready and people, people are going to come from my ass for this. Okay. Yeah, well, Bowen is hot today. Here we go. This is Bowen Yang's I don't think so honey. And his time starts now. I don't think so honey suggested donation at a museum that is also hidden from view on the signage
Starting point is 01:21:49 at admissions and ticketing. These museums, I'm not talking to small ones where, you know, they don't get super endowed, for lack of a better word. But some of these museums, you got to print the suggested donation word a little bit bigger on the signage for the tickets, because guess what? You're getting billions of dollars from all these old money folks. And I can pay a quarter without being fooled into paying $20 to see a painting. I love museums so much.
Starting point is 01:22:21 I think we should really think of them more as libraries. I think I walked into the New York Public Library at Brian Park, and I had a lovely time going around, walking through the different rooms. And I went, whoa, I got to come here for free because guess what? A lot of rich people put in a lot of money during gala season. And I think suggested donations, if you really want to hide that concept, is a little bit tricky. That's one minute. I'm not saying people don't have to pay money.
Starting point is 01:22:51 I'm just saying you should print the word suggested donation bigger. That's all. It's a font thing. It's a font thing. It's often a font thing. It's often a font thing. It is. It is.
Starting point is 01:23:06 He's very visual. It's the language. They just need to say it costs a dollar. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Then we go. Yeah. Perfect. I got a dollar.
Starting point is 01:23:14 Here you go. Yeah. That's all I'm saying. Let's not be. It's not a suggestion. It's actually mandatory. But the donation is the part that is... Throwing you.
Starting point is 01:23:24 But then because it's a donation, it's like, well, then I don't have to do that. It's out of the kindness of my heart that I'm giving you a dollar. It's like, let's... It's quite manipulative. If they said this is a $1 extravaganza, you would be like, I'm in. I would have a problem then. I'd be like, can we just call it a museum? Can we just call it a museum?
Starting point is 01:23:46 What's the halliboloo? Thank you. for being on that journey with me. I was like, oh, as I was doing, I was like, this doesn't make any sense. No, we got there. We got there. We got there. It's a safe place. Do you have something to tear up in culture? I'm nervous. Because the first thing that comes to mind, it's probably slightly controversial.
Starting point is 01:24:02 I think that's the perfect recipe. Okay, go. Okay. This is Carly Wade-up since I don't think so, honey. Her time starts now. Okay, so I got kicked out of a book club because I know. I know. And the reason is because I just, I wanted to get it. I didn't get it. I made some insensitive jokes. You know that the type, do you know the type of book where it's like kind of a romance fantasy like fairies? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. What is that called? Quarters and Roses. Oh, romanticacy. Yeah, romanticcy. Okay. So it has all the
Starting point is 01:24:36 ingredients I should like. Yeah, totally. But somehow when I'm reading, I like to embody the character. Totally. You know, pretend I'm her. And I'm with her. I'm with her for the fighting I'm with her for the journey and the cold and then we get to the room and all this anticipation is coming she's finally going to get with the guy and then he has wings
Starting point is 01:24:59 not horny or like scales or claws yeah yeah yeah and I'm I'm it takes me out you can't go there I just I can't I lost my you know can't cut to that feeling and yet and so my jokes don't land because I don't think everybody else
Starting point is 01:25:15 gets taken out but then I have follow up questions Okay, there you go. We have so much to ask you. So, first of all, do you feel comfortable sharing one of the jokes and trying them on us? I would have to put, I mean, I really got kicked out. But like, with love. They were like, you're yucking or yum.
Starting point is 01:25:32 Yeah, yeah, yes. And then I hate to be that person. No. So I'm like, give me your ex. I'll try again. But I just, then I get another joke and then I can't help myself. So this is, and this is actually another thing I want to really open up here is that book club. across the world can be one of the most toxic relational spaces ever.
Starting point is 01:25:55 A lot of hierarchy. Because I was just talking to a friend of ours and he was saying, and I can't speak for the other person who, a gay man who is auditioning to be part of a gay book club. Oh, wow. There's a vetting system. There's a vetting system where all these men are like, we want to see if you're the right fit.
Starting point is 01:26:15 It's like, wait a minute. intellectual hierarchy. It's like, hold on. The opposite of what Carly Ribbon want. She's disappointed in you. Well, the only thing you don't want to is that person who's like not finished the book. That's fine. And has the most opinions.
Starting point is 01:26:32 So I understand. I respect and feel a little relief that I'm no longer in the book club. I was just the jokes, girl. You know what? No, you created an abundance. You were putting clay on the mound. You were giving them stuff to talk about it. They couldn't handle it.
Starting point is 01:26:48 They have since started a podcast, which is fact of their own. It's serious. So they're competition to us now, so we can't support them. Just didn't want to say anything. But yeah, yeah. Well, because you were on that Bustle podcast when I'd stand talking about reading. Oh, it wasn't that one. But yes.
Starting point is 01:27:04 No, no, I'm not saying that was the podcast. We're not trying out. She didn't kick me out. But that was you talking about your reading habits and the fact that like I, and I relate to this. Like, you have seasons of reading where you're like, I love, I'm Bell. I'm a book girl. And then, yeah, and then I'm not at all of a sudden. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:27:20 Yeah. I'm like that. I've got my spurts. Yeah. But anyway. Are you guys in a spurt right now? Are you reading anything right now? I'm in a spurt.
Starting point is 01:27:26 I had a great summer of reading. It genuinely did. I still would say probably my main thing is I'm reading like baby food for my side. You know what? I'm reading like, you know, information. You're reading the labels. Keep the kid a lot. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 01:27:42 Important. Yeah. Important. Yeah. But yeah, I mean, they're. They're yumbing your yuck Because you're like, I'm okay, I'm into it, I'm into it, and I'm horny
Starting point is 01:27:51 Is that a thing though? I'm making it a thing. I like it. They're yumbing your yuck. Where you're like, honestly, it's a rule of culture. It's rule of culture number 13. Yuck my yum. You're yumbing my yuck.
Starting point is 01:28:03 I like it very much. Wings? Yeah. Yuck. Like fairy wings? Like that reminds me of bugs. I fucking hate those things. I think I just have to read it differently.
Starting point is 01:28:13 I have to read it not as like, I am not one of these. This is a fantasy world for a different. But then you have to be invested because it's fantasy because otherwise there's no tethered reality. Have you seen the shape of water? No, I have not. It's one of the horniest times a woman has been for a fish. Like she wants to fuck the fish very badly.
Starting point is 01:28:31 And then Octavia Spencer got an Oscar nomination for noticing that. Our friend George Tavares has a joke in his stand-up where he was like, basically Octavia Spencer just goes, do you want to fuck the fish? That's act one. Act two is you're gonna fuck that fish. That's act two. And act three is, you fucked that fish. I don't know if I do or don't want to see this.
Starting point is 01:28:56 And then at the end, she's supportive of it. She's like, girl, you fucked that fish. I knew this conversation was going to go to some places, but I did not know. What are you like? Well, it's true. I don't think so, honey. Yeah. Hey, I opened the door.
Starting point is 01:29:14 Yeah. We did, no. We're so glad you did. And we're so happy you walked in the door and came and sat on the couch and spoke with us. We love you so much if you can't tell. I love you back. Thank you for everything and for like just creating this opus day and night, which is out September 18th.
Starting point is 01:29:30 Check it out. And there's a tease for something coming that not even we know about. So stay tuned. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Something that may or may not be able to be said. Okay. Any last words for the gay men who are,
Starting point is 01:29:44 listening to this podcast. Oh, don't come at me for not understanding fantasy. I'm so sorry. No. They're with you. I want you guys to come to, I want you to come to the musical, but I mostly want you to come to party with us next year when we go tour. Absolutely.
Starting point is 01:30:02 I feel like that's, I feel like we need to celebrate together. There's a tour. There's a tour. Is this breaking? No, it's not breaking. But it's coming. Of course I'm going to tour. I was listening to the album and I was just like this.
Starting point is 01:30:14 This is gonna be so amazing life. I'm not staying home for this out. No way. We're bringing the baby. We're bringing it all. Baby's hitting the road. Oh, that'll be exciting and fun. Very excited.
Starting point is 01:30:24 Wow. So good. Well, we end every episode with a song. I'm not the type of girl for you. I'm not going to pretend. We went to the US Open last night, so our voices are a little scratchy. It's good. You need to have grit. You need to have grit.
Starting point is 01:30:40 We'll do the big belt. Ready? Oh. Bye. Oh my God. Las Colteracis is the production by Will Ferrell's Big Money Players and IHeartRadio podcasts. Created and hosted by Matt Rogers and Bowen-Yang. Executive produced by Anna Hosnii and produced by Becker-Ramos.
