The judge declares a mistrial in the double murder trial of rapper YNW. Melly. So what does this mean for the case? Is he getting out of jail? I'm Jinnett Levy and welcome to this breaking news edition of Law and Crime Sidebar podcast. It is Saturday and the jury in YNW Melly's double murder case deliberated for much of the morning and into the afternoon. And they came back.
Starting point is 00:01:30 and told Judge Murphy that they still could not reach a verdict. So this jury has essentially said they're deadlocked. We don't know what the split is or what evidence is hanging them up. The jury entered the courtroom a little after 2 o'clock Eastern time. And you could tell it was pretty tense in there. The judge called attorneys from both the prosecution and the defense to his bench. He had a piece of paperwork in his hand. And then the jury entered. And the judge explained that he understood that they still were not able to reach a verdict, and he declared a mistrial and thanked the jurors for their service. Christine Bradley, the lead prosecutor on the case, said, should we start the 90-day process now? Because under Florida law, a retrial, if the state is going to retry, YNW. Melly,
Starting point is 00:02:17 has to be held within 90 days of the mistrial being declared. The defense said, not so fast, we want to set this for a status conference, so that will happen on Friday, July 28th. We understand understand that the deliberations were likely very contentious. We had people in the courtroom yesterday who said that the jurors looked annoyed and angry when they would enter the courtroom, and there were actually chairs placed in between some of them, showing possibly the disagreement between some members of the jury. You could tell they wanted to go home yesterday. And the judge sent them back in to deliberate and read them what's called an Allen charge, which he basically forcefully encourages them to go back in and do their duty. And,
Starting point is 00:03:00 and review the evidence in the case. Saturday morning arrives. The jury returns and resumes its deliberations, and they asked to see Chris Thomas, YNWGV's damaged cell phone that was recovered from the floorboard of his seat in the backseat of the Jeep Compass back on October 26th of 2018. Shortly after that, that is when the mistrial was declared. Whether or not the state still plans to pursue the death penalty against Melly for the deaths of Anthony Williams and Chris Thomas, Jr. remains to be seen. We could find out more about that at that status conference on Friday. So again, just to wrap things up, YNW. Melly, going back to the Broward County Jail, where he has been held for many years now, it appears that the state intends to retry him for the murders of both friends of his, Anthony Williams, who was YNW Sack Chaser, and Chris Thomas, Jr., who is YNWGB. So he still faces the charges and we'll let you know what happens from there. I'm Ann Jeanette Levy.
