And now he is going to prison for trying to kill one of his victims, chasing her down in the middle of the street as she came home from school.
Starting point is 00:01:14 We got our hands on some of the surveillance images police used to track them down as well as these sickening messages. Welcome to Sidebar. Presented by Law and Crime, I'm Jesse Weber. Ellis Dismore, Cleveland County Police in the northern part of England say for the past seven years since he was a teenager himself, Dismore has been using fake social media accounts to stalk teenage girls and entice them to send him naked photos. But his behavior became much more erratic and much more scarier over the years until it culminated in an attempted murder in 2023. Now, we have to warn you with this. There are some really disturbing details in this story, including voices. messages that Dismore left the victim's family that included threats of rape and violence,
Starting point is 00:02:05 so it's really hard to hear. I just want to give you a warning as we go through this case. But the outlet, the Northern Echo, reported on the case in Dismore's trials, one for the attempted murder, another for sexual offenses involving multiple girls. They say the prosecutor told jurors that Dismore used the alias James Wilson online, pretending to be a teenage boy to strike up conversations with girls. He convinced them to send him lewd photos and then tried to use those photos to blackmail the girls into sending more and more photos and meeting up with him for sex. I want to talk about one of these girls in particular who became the target of Dismore's rage in June of 2023. And to do that, I want to bring on former homicide detective Phil Waters, a legend
Starting point is 00:02:51 in the industry. Phil, just initial impressions as you hear a story like this. It might be broad, but I imagine you've seen something similar here in the States. What I'm always struck with is the lack of, for lack of a better term, the lack of parenting. These young children, these young girls that are online and just seem to have no boundaries set for them by their parents. Their parents are not aware of what's going on. I'm sure that if they were, certainly this would stop. But it should never get, in a general sense, it should never get to this point. Now, a guy like this, obviously, not his first rodeo.
Starting point is 00:03:41 He has made a career out of stalking these young girls and then getting them to do things if they would not normally do, certainly, by blackmailing them and threatening them. It's incredibly disturbing, and look, you know, when it comes to parents, it's hard to know what your child is up to, what's going on, or maybe they're afraid to come forward because I'll tell you this much, according to reporting from the Northern Echo, this 15-year-old girl from Middlesboro got involved with Dismore online in 2022, eventually rejected him, blocked him on social media. That becomes important. The mirror reports that when she did that, Dismore started sending her naked photos to people and posting them online. She eventually told her mom what was going on, and that is when the family reported Dismore to the police. And that's when her mom started getting voice messages on Snapchat from Dismore in June of 2023. And those were eventually played for a jury. Ignore me.
Starting point is 00:04:41 Ignore me. That's what she said right to my mate about ignoring me. I tell you now, right, you know what I'll do? Yeah, I will make sure, right, that she gets raped. I tell you now, right, she dead to me, that girl. I was fucking good to wear you and that fucking thanks I get I tell you now right
Starting point is 00:05:00 you know what I'll do she'll be fucking sorry and Dismore even threatened to recruit other people to hurt this girl and her family and get everyone yeah because on my life right if I die tomorrow
Starting point is 00:05:11 I will sort her out and I'll get every right from Pally to sort her out as well and all over thornery and fucking Brambles Farm and fucking Park End as well
Starting point is 00:05:22 fucking tant ignore me the fucking cheeky big fat, fucking little sce, fucking freckles all over the face. A lot about getting raped, little shther. I fucking get it raped and stabbed on my life. You know, some of these threats are actually so abhorrent that we can't even play them for you. I mean, that's bad.
Starting point is 00:05:40 Imagine what else he said. So, Phil, what do you make of that? Well, what we have here is a, this is one evil dude. And you're listening to this guy who has brought the, girls into his web and he is they're starting to resist a little bit which is typical and his solution to this rejection is to threaten them in such a way that it is it's it's importantly the things that he is saying there and the
Starting point is 00:06:16 profanity and the anger the sheer anger behind his in his voice directed at these young girls impressionable young girls and these are children that he's talking and that he's threatening and so uh this guy is uh he's he's in that category of a of a person who is consumed with his own evil desires and that's and that's the real world you know we're in a world of good and evil you're not on one side you're on the other so uh this is a perfect example of that by the way What do sidebar stories like this prove that the world is just incredibly scary and unpredictable? And honestly, when you think about that, one of the scariest and most unpredictable things in life can be getting injured, right? What are your rights? What do you do? Well, that is why having a great lawyer matters.
Starting point is 00:07:08 And that is where Morgan and Morgan, the exclusive personal injury law firm of law and crime comes in. So they're a firm with over 1,000 attorneys, and that is because they win a lot. Because in the past few months, Morgan and Morgan has secured a $29 million verdict for a bicyclist in Philadelphia, a 2.7 million. dollar verdict for a car accident victim in Florida, not to mention $5.6 million for a car crash victim in Georgia after insurance offered that client $0. Even if you think your case isn't worth millions, why not start a claim and fight for what you deserve? And Morgan and Morgan makes it so simple because you can start a claim from your phone in just eight clicks. So if you're injured, you can easily start a claim at for the people.com slash LC sidebar.
Starting point is 00:07:49 Dismore said multiple times in the threats that he knew he could be jailed. for what he's doing, for carrying out these threats. But apparently he didn't care. Take a listen. I don't even fucking care as well if I even get fucking jail, yeah? Because I will aptly right, ruin air life. I will aptly, yeah, put the knife straight in a rat
Starting point is 00:08:08 and spin it around as all the blood pours out. I'll tell you now, I'll do jail time on my granddad's life. Now I'll rape her. I tell you now, I'll aptly do jail time because I will sit in my fucking jail cell and laugh every single day that I fucking did what I did to it. Phil, you think he's laughing every day, like he said? You know, that's a good question, Jesse.
Starting point is 00:08:34 A guy like this finds a way to satiate his desires whatever setting he is in. So in some perverted way, he may very well be doing that, thinking that he somehow accomplished something here. And he's going to continue to, you know, what he's trying to accomplish here is to this threat that he throws over these girls. He is getting deep into their psyche and intimidating them and hoping that that intimidation occurs over a long period of time, if not, you know, to no end. So he's, yeah, this guy's an interesting character. He's a psychopath.
Starting point is 00:09:19 And it's not just the messages, because just days after the victim's mom got those messages, Dismore attacks her daughter in the street. According to the police investigation on Thursday, June 22nd, 23, Dismore went to a store, bought a pack of steak knives. Remember he was talking about stabbing her. He was seen on surveillance walking around the store, making his purchase. And from there, he gets into a bus, headed for a neighborhood. police placed together security camera footage from several homes and businesses to follow his route. And eventually, Dismore starts following a teen girl on the sidewalk before making contact with her. And according to police, the teen had never seen Dismore before, but she recognized his voice
Starting point is 00:10:03 and she realized what danger she is in. So she takes off running. He's following, chasing her from close behind. A passer by his dashboard camera captures the moment that Dismore reaches out with a knife, stabs the girl, the driver of the car pulled over, started screaming at Dismore to stop, rescues this girl from what could have been a brutal murder, and according to police,
Starting point is 00:10:26 she had multiple stab wounds to her back and chest, but she survived. Phil, you know, I don't even know what you want to talk about first. The fact that this is a guy who carried out on the threats, or B, again, didn't seem to care because don't you know that in today's day and age, you leave a digital footprint, especially in a place like,
Starting point is 00:10:46 this where there's cameras everywhere didn't seem to care no he doesn't because he's a narcissist and he thinks that he's going to be able to get away with what he's what he's doing and he is driven by that and just the brazen going to this girl's home waiting for her to get off the bus oh my gosh and then he did fortunately you've got somebody there with a dash cam who captures most of this if not all of it and then gets out and puts themselves in harm's way to save this young girl. So I'm not surprised at all about his conduct given on what we know, given about what we know about him and the way this builds up to this point in time.
Starting point is 00:11:33 And like I said before, the guy, there's a difference between a sociopath and a psychopath. A sociopath does something that they think they're justified in doing. and a psychopath does a social, commits a sociopathic act and enjoys what they're doing. This guy clearly is a psychopath, at least in my definition of those particular types of individuals. And when investigators started looking into him and this attempted murder, they found out about other teen girls he had targeted online, brought the total number of victims to at least nine. He was convicted of more than a dozen charges in those two trials, including stalking, causing fear of violence or serious harm and distress, causing a child to watch a sexual act and attempted murder. The stabbing victim herself spoke during the sentencing telling Judge Timothy Steed about the terror that Dismore caused her, saying my mother received some voice notes.
Starting point is 00:12:30 They were terrifying, threatening to kill me by stabbing me through the heart. Things were getting worse for me, but the worst was yet to come. Ellis Dismore tried to kill me. I was chased and stabbed on my way home from school. The attack was horrific. I felt like I was going to be killed in broad daylight. I ran for my life, but luckily someone stopped their car and let me in. If not for her, Ellis Dismore would have killed me. So Judge Steed sentenced Dismore to a total of 43 years. So 38 years in prison, followed by five years of probation. The judge told the convicted predator that her life was in peril, cannot be doubted. And it is the enormous credit to a member of the public that she came to the rescue, shouted at you and momentarily caused you to pause and allow your victim to get partially into her rescuers' car. I have no doubt that if it hadn't been for the actions of that woman, this would very likely have been an offense of murder, which you had intended.
Starting point is 00:13:25 Dismore was labeled as a dangerous offender, in part because of those vile messages he sent. He's going to be on the sex offender registry for the UK for the rest of his life, and there's also a permanent restraining order to protect the nine victims as well. So, Phil, you see the conclusion to this case, but again, you think to yourself, as somebody who has handled so many homicide investigations, you know, it could be that brief moment between an attempted murder and versus a murder, and that clearly seems to be what the case was here. Oh, certainly.
Starting point is 00:13:55 And that's the difference, right? It's just that fine line that one begast the other. you know but I go back to you know and this girl will forever be marked with this in a literal sense and in a in her mental sense so things like this again when they manifest themselves into this kind of an act this is this is not going to be you know they said they've got nine victims I would not be surprised if there are several more. These things don't happen in isolation. This guy obviously has a plan. I'd be curious to know what he does. You know, what does he do on his off time when he's not on the internet stalking young
Starting point is 00:14:43 girls? You think he's laughing in prison? He said he was, hey, he went on the tape. He said he was going to be laughing. I would imagine whatever British version of a bunch that he meets since his cellmate, maybe giving him an education that he didn't expect. So I would doubt that he is laughing in prison. If he is, it's at himself. I think that this guy is, he's not unique. I guess that's the more scary part of this, right? He's not, he's not unique.
Starting point is 00:15:22 There's a lot of guys like him out there, and he is just one of those that moves forward beyond just, the stalking on the internet and commits an act of violence upon a person. Just another, another really insane case and chilling case about children as victims and the need to protect them. My gosh, well, at least he's behind bars and seemingly can't hurt anybody on the outside. But Phil Waters, thanks so much for coming on. I appreciate you taking the time, sir. You bet. Anytime, Jesse. All right, everybody. That is all we have for you right now here on Sidebar. Thank you for joining us on what was a very difficult episode. We'd really,
