She shares what it was really like surviving intense public scrutiny, finding peace off camera, and why having creative control this time around was a non-negotiable.We also get into marriage, beauty, turning 40, living without cameras—and of course, I had to ask her if she’ll be voting for Spencer Pratt in the election.A word from our sponsors:Vivrelle - Go to www.vivrelle.com and apply for a membership today using referral code HONEST for your first month of membership free - the code will also allow you to skip the Vivrelle waitlist.Sam Edelman - Visit us at samedelman.com to explore everything you need for spring and get 15% off with code honest15.Armra - Go to armra.com/HONEST or enter HONEST to get 30% off your first subscription order.Hiya - Receive 50% off your first order. Starting point is 00:00:00 The following podcast is a dear media production. This is Let's Be Honest with Kristen Cavalry, a podcast all about getting real and open on everything from sex, relationships, reality TV, wellness, family, and so much more. And just a fair warning, there will probably be some oversharing. Well, I'm so excited you're here. Yeah, thanks for helping. Do you come up to L.A. a lot? No, no.
Starting point is 00:00:29 I have a couple girlfriends up here that I'll like, pop up and like do a day with, but nothing else really brings me up anymore. So when did you move to Laguna? It's been how many years? I was pregnant with my son who's eight. Wow. Do you ever miss L.A.? I miss my friends here and I miss the restaurants. I know. I know. Laguna has good restaurants though. Does it not? Not as many. There's not as much variety. Like we have our few favorites that we go to, but I feel like there's like some really amazing restaurants here that I miss. L.A. has good, good ones. Yeah. What's your favorite? in L.A.? Yeah, like if you're up here for one night and you're like, okay, I just, I have to go here.
Starting point is 00:01:05 I don't have like a usual. I have a couple girlfriends who are like foodies, so I just go wherever they take me and like just make, make a reservation. Yeah. Have you been to Pache? That's like my, no. You haven't been to Pache on Laurel. What is it, Laurel Canyon? Oh, I'm sorry. Yeah. Oh my God. Forever go. Yes. It's been around forever. I went on a first date with someone there and it was like a funny situation where the waiter came up and he was like, so nice to see you again to me. And I was like, no, no, first date. No. Clearly, I was like his date spot. I was like, that's a good date spot.
Starting point is 00:01:34 It is. It's cute because they've got that little market next door and you'd like grab a bottle of wine and like watch a movie. It was perfect. I've actually been on a bunch of dates there too. There you go. It's in your spot. I don't know if it's my spot or it's I think every guy's spot in L.A.
Starting point is 00:01:47 It's a good one. Yeah. Oh my God. Okay, well, since we're talking about L.A., let's talk about like back in the day, graduate high school, you move up to L.A. You're filming in the hills. I just had this conversation with someone else. the early 2000s, there was nothing like it, right? It was the best. It was so much fun.
Starting point is 00:02:04 So much fun. Yeah, you just can't get it back. It was that like little window, right? We're like, we had like those sidekicks, but we didn't have like real camera phones. And like, I don't know if you remember this. You would go out and like you would see naughtiness. But like just wouldn't happen nowadays. Like there was just, I think, I don't know. I know. Because well now you can't do it because you're worried someone's going to take a picture. Of course. Where as soon as you get into the club back in the day. Once you pass the paparazzi, you are free. Little animals. It's crazy in there. Yeah, I had a blast. It was so fun. It was so fun. Yeah. Did you date a lot in your early 20s? I mean, as much as you can when you're like working and doing TV. So I did a little bit.
Starting point is 00:02:44 Was it always on the hills? Or were you able to try and hide them a lot? But they find out though? They would. And then they would always find out. And then they would want to put them on the show. Yes. Yeah. It would get weird. It was like a funny thing where like they would immediately go on the show. I felt weird about it because I was like, you know, a lot of people here were like aspiring actors stuff. And I was like, do they just want to be on the show? And then you feel like, I don't know. I would always try and get to know someone off camera first, unless I met them on camera, which happened a couple times. And they would ask. Just being out and about. Yeah. And then that was like more organic. It didn't feel weird. But I mean, you know, it's weird to date on camera. So I didn't do it a lot. How would you distinguish if you could trust someone or not with guys and girls? Because with dating, but I also almost feel like girls, it's even harder. It's really hard. I was really lucky to still.
Starting point is 00:03:27 have a lot of my friends that I grew up with. And so I think that that was important. Like when I was living in L.A. and filming, I had three of my girlfriends living in the house that no one knew about. Oh, really? Yeah. Am I allowed to see names in here? I don't know. Yeah. I mean, people may not know. Yeah. Natania lived with me at one point. Mora lived with me. Jill lived with me. Oh, wow. Yeah. So I had them. I mean, at one point I cleared out like my dining room. I was like, we don't use it. Oh, gosh. That's so fun. Because I didn't get like a traditional college experience. So, like, for me, that was my sorority house. Like, we would all get ready together and hang out and do dinners.
Starting point is 00:04:01 And it was really fun. Did they film? Every once in a while, but not a lot. No, they all kind of had their own thing going on. So they just kind of figured, you know, that's your thing. I'm over here doing my thing. You see them, like, in the background when we're, like, having parties and stuff. But, like, yeah, they, I mean, no.
Starting point is 00:04:16 I love that. Yeah. I didn't know that. That's awesome. Yeah. So you just kept your circle tight. Yes. I know.
Starting point is 00:04:22 It's what you have to do. I think so. Because also, too, like, that was such a crazy time with the paparazzi and the hills was obviously the biggest show and you guys are on every magazine cover. I mean, it was hard. It's hard to trust people. Yeah. I had my close people around me. I, you know, I worked with the same people for years and years. And it's a funny thing. I think I think time is the only way you trust someone. So if you knew someone for long enough, you'd get to know them in that way and be like, oh, okay. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Did you ever feel like you got used? Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:52 Guys, girls. Yeah. Well, I think I would, I would catch on pretty quickly and just be like, oh, this isn't, this doesn't feel like a good relationship. I know, you can tell. Yeah. It's a gut feeling, right? Of course. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then just like little things start to add up.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Yeah. Yeah. But I think that that's just kind of, that goes along with the territory. For sure. For sure. Yeah. Do you find that still today or because you're off TV? You feel like it's kind of died down a little bit?
Starting point is 00:05:16 Yeah. Being in Laguna. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We live a really quiet life. I feel really lucky to have like the group of friends. We have a lot of our friends have kids the same age.
Starting point is 00:05:24 And we just kind of like. it feels like a different chapter, a different life. Yeah. Yeah. Is it a lot of the same people that you knew growing up? You would know a lot of the people I spent time with yes. I love it. You would. It's funny. I remember like one of the first times we were doing baseball, my husband was coaching the team and he's like, oh, there's three other guys coaching with me. And we walked up and I looked and I was like, I went to high school with all these guys. Oh my gosh. It was like, Sean Maddox said and Nema Morda. Oh my God. It's so funny. Yeah. I love it. I was like, I know all these guys. Yeah. It's yeah. It's really. It's really. It's really. It's really. It's really. It's really. It's really. It's really. It's really. It's really. Yeah. It's. It's. It's. It's really a special place. It just feels like a small town still. I just, it's such a nice community. It was so nice to be back filming the reunion. Because I had never go back anymore. My dad left. I just, I left. I didn't know. Yeah, he doesn't live there anymore. Okay. I really have no reason to go back. I've taken my kids a couple times. But it was, it was really nice being there. Yeah. How do you think the reunion went? How do you think the reunion? I thought it went great. I know, it did. It went good or well. It was harder for me than I thought it was going to be. In what way? Like I was
Starting point is 00:06:26 The stage day was really hard for me. Which that was the first thing we shot. So like the typical reunion sound stage. Yeah. There was a lot of conversations about that should be last. And I still feel like that should have been last. I kind of agree with that. Because we could have like broken the ice and all like, I did enjoy like ending with that bonfire.
Starting point is 00:06:43 Like it was so special. It was really cool. I had a good time. But I feel like at that point we all kind of had gotten comfortable with each other again. Because the reunion was the first time most of us have seen each other in. 20 years. Like I don't... Jessica or Alex. Yeah. And they just threw us right in the mix. They did. And that was like, I'm not comfortable on a stage. That was really, really hard. So were you nervous the whole time?
Starting point is 00:07:05 I was really nervous. I also, like, I don't do great with like bright light. I have like migraines and stuff. So like I was like struggling on that stage. And it was a long day. It was a really long day. You did great. Oh my God. Thanks. You did so well. Thank you. I know you did too. Well, the problem was is every time they would take the camera off of me, I would just like stare at the ground and like try and get myself together, but they kept using those clips. So like when they did the first round, I was like, guys, this makes it look like I didn't, like I didn't want to be with this group of people, which wasn't true because I was so excited to be reunited. I was just in that environment personally having a really hard time. Typical reality
Starting point is 00:07:44 shows like, oh, we're going to use this look and put it here. Yes. I mean, fortunately, we were all involved this time. So I could be like, can you just tell it how it was? Like, this was, I know they tried really hard to make a lot of stuff. happen here and I was like, we're good. I know, like, you guys, it's been over 20. I know. I think it's been 22 years. We're like, we're enough already. Yeah, yeah. So you, Stephen and I have executive producer credit. I sure do. Thank God. Was that a deal breaker for you? Yes. So you wouldn't have done it. Had you not gotten the EP credit? No. Why? I think that I spent so many years doing this without any control. Yeah. To have the option to have control and say was really important to me.
Starting point is 00:08:25 And it made it feel safer. A thousand percent. Yeah. So was there anything that you said no to from the jump? And then did you also get anything taken out? So many looks taken out. I mean, by the way, like, I felt so bad for these poor people editing this, like my notes. I was just like, so I'm going to need you.
Starting point is 00:08:44 You and Stephen both had a lot of notes. I'm like, that looks good. It was, yeah, you were like, look, look, look at it. I love it. It's great. I'm like, I watched this first cut I watched. and I was like, your face doesn't drop once. Like, I was like, she nailed this.
Starting point is 00:09:00 And like every time you cut to me, I literally look like I want to light myself on fire. I'm like, get me out of here. No, no, no, no, I promise. I promise it was so bad. I was like, oh, my God. My husband watched it with me and he was like, oh, no. Oh, jeez. He was like, it's okay, it's okay, the big set.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Your executive producer. Thank God. And I was just like, listen, if I went out there and I was like, I am going to be a big old be out here, like that's one thing. but I was like, I was just on the, I was really having a hard time. I was like, just tell it how it went. Yeah. Well, that was a big note for all of us.
Starting point is 00:09:29 We were like, can you just do it in reality? Like what actually happened? Yes. I did actually have a note. There was a scene with, I think it was Talon and Hoosie and I at coffee. And same thing. I was like, you guys made my answer about dating or something so short. I was like, can you just give it a little breath?
Starting point is 00:09:46 And they did. They like opened up my sentence again. But they like, cut it so short. Well, oh, that's interesting. I know. So it was just, I've seen. For all of us, it's like, you guys just have what we actually said. Make the cut. It's not that hard. Actually, Liz was a big, she fought for that. She was like, we're not altering things. Like, things need to lie how they were. Like, there's a story to be told here. We don't need to make up anything. Exactly. There's enough to talk about. It's like, it's an interesting story.
Starting point is 00:10:12 And it's really leaning on nostalgia rather than drama because it's been so long. There's obviously no drama anymore. So we're not leaning into that. I think we also set out to do like a feel good thing. Like there's enough going on. Like I know I'm personally seeking things that are like make me, I don't know feel good. And I think that's what we want. I think it's what we accomplished. I agree. Like I love at the end. I'm like, I was like, oh, I like ended it smiling. And it's great. That's what I know I like it. It's perfect. It's exactly what we wanted. Yes. I agree. So with all the end. I'm like, I was like, oh, I like ended. It's like. It's perfect. It's exactly what we wanted. Yes. Yes. I agree. So with all. So with all. So with all. So. So. So. So, the press now coming up. It's been how long since you've done like a proper press tour? I like a while, right? Yeah. I can't think of when I would have done it. Are you nervous for all of that? Very. Really? Yeah. So like Tuesday morning when we do the Today show, you'll have butterflies in your stomach. I will be a mess. I'm surprised. Were you always nervous back in the day for that stuff? Yeah, I was always nervous, but then I got used to it. But I'm just so far removed that like it just feels. Yeah. Yeah. Foreign territory. Totally. I've never been super comfortable doing that stuff. But yeah, this is, it's going to be hard. Are you nervous for this? I was nervous for this. Were you? I'm nervous for cameras and stuff. I'm okay now. I'm like,
Starting point is 00:11:20 happy to sit and talk to you. But like any, I'm just, there's cameras aren't a part of my life anymore. So it feels weird. I also think there's a thing where like, I don't know, seeing myself on camera is hard. Even after all the years that you did it. I think because it's been so many years. I'm an aging woman. And like, especially with this. I mean, listen, I feel good about myself. I'm like, it's fine. But like, it is a. funny thing when we did this reunion. Like they were cutting scenes back and forth of like 18 year old me and then 39 year old me and I was like, whoa. You know, though, we talked about this. There's something in the water in Laguna. I think you look better. I think everybody, honestly,
Starting point is 00:11:57 everyone looks fantastic. I'm just saying that there is a thing about putting yourself on camera where like I will get ready for a date with my husband and do my hair makeup and I'll look in the mirror and I'll feel beautiful. Right. But then I'll see a photo later and I'm like, ooh, it's so true. I felt cuter than that. I know, what's up with that? That's what I'm saying. I'm like, I live a life without cameras now and I feel good about myself and I don't want to pick myself apart because that's not my priority. No, I know. I get it. So that's the thing I'm most nervous about is like I was like I don't want that to affect like my self-esteem. Well, I will tell you when I watched the reunion back, like the actual, I mean the whole thing, but especially in the actual reunion, I thought you looked so beautiful.
Starting point is 00:12:33 Thank you. That was like the very first thing that stood out to me how good you looked. So rest of sure. I think everyone is going to think how good you look. It's that time, guys. And this one specifically is for all of my fashionistas. I want to talk to you guys about Vrel. If you don't know Virel yet, it's a members-only club where you can borrow designer bags, jewelry, watches, and yeah, even diamonds. Starting point is 00:16:42 Thank you. What did you do for your birthday? It's a big one. So we've been talking for years about throwing a prom. My husband and I are born in the same week. So we usually celebrate together. And then my best friend is a few days after my husband and her husband's like a couple weeks for me. So like we're all within a few weeks of each other. So we rented out of his face in Laguna and we threw a prom. I love it. It was really fun. It was really fun. It was really fun. It was really fun. So what did you wear? I wore. Yeah. Let me see. You got out of your prom. I'm like on my. Well, here. It's on my screen. Wait, that's so cute. It was really fun. My husband like put together a band with all of his friends. And how many people are coming to this party? Oh my God, wait. This is full on. It looks like Valentine's Day.
Starting point is 00:17:21 Yeah, we did red and pink. It was like 130 people. Wow. It was full on. It was a whole problem. It was really cool. Why don't you post this stuff? You never post.
Starting point is 00:17:30 You know what I was going to? I just got distracted. You don't post anything. Why? You need to post those. I know. I just forget, honestly. I forget about social.
Starting point is 00:17:40 I try. Are you just not on that much? I'm not on there that much. I honestly. the only, like my algorithm's all just like, like puppy memes and whatever. It's just like when I'm bored, I'm scrolling. But yeah, I don't, I have like a funny thing where like I, I love living moments just for me. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:55 And like privacy is so special that like, yeah. Every once in a while I share it, I'm just like, oh, like I'll do like a yearly recap of like, I love that. No, I think that's good. No, I actually, I have a bunch. I should post him because my friend took, he had a film camera there and took a bunch in their rad. So I'm like, I should.
Starting point is 00:18:11 Yeah, you got to do a birthday. I should. But I didn't do anybody else. So the kids call them, Lauren. Still? I don't think so. I don't know. I can't keep up.
Starting point is 00:18:22 Just wait until your kids are a little bit older. Like they have their whole lingo now. I mean, the words. No, they're starting. Are they starting already? Because they're how old? It's the same thing as we grew up with. Like my little one's like everything's sick, bro.
Starting point is 00:18:33 So it's the surf. The surf lingo will never change. No, it's very serf. Narlies. Yeah, gnarly. Are they saying like that and chopped? Like any of them? Okay.
Starting point is 00:18:43 I think mine are a little younger. Yeah. My boy. What's your youngest boy? So, youngest is almost 12, actually. Oh, okay. Yeah. Well, my daughter is 10.
Starting point is 00:18:50 Okay. But yeah, then so 13, almost 12 and then 10. So we're like, yeah, I have a 13. Wait, they're so. Oh, yeah. We knocked them out. Wait, how old are yours? Mine are six and eight.
Starting point is 00:19:00 Six and eight. That's right. Yeah. Yeah. Two boys. Two boys. You like being a boy mom? I do.
Starting point is 00:19:05 Yeah. I do. Are they into sports and stuff right now? Yeah, we do like baseball, soccer. Yeah. Yeah. They're not like, they're not super. They're so smart.
Starting point is 00:19:18 They're very smart. My kids are actually really smart. I really struggled in school and they're just like killing it. And I feel like, I feel proud that I made such smart kids. There you go. See? Like, no problem.
Starting point is 00:19:29 No, they're like really great teammates. I love it. No, I get it. I can't even help. I think it was when Jackson was in third grade. I had to ask Camden, my oldest, for help with his math homework. Because of third grade. Well, they changed math.
Starting point is 00:19:44 Well, that's my excuse, but I'm like, I don't know. No, no, no, no. I'm like, I can't even help with third grade math. No, I've never had to help with homework. They're just like on it. That's great. Yeah, I know. That's really nice.
Starting point is 00:19:54 I know. It was so unexpected. Well, like, leave, my husband and I'll leave conferences and we're like, so there's like no problem. Great. Love that. Because we were both like school was challenging. Yeah, I hated school.
Starting point is 00:20:03 But they're just killing it. Thank God. So, keep it going. So, what a gift. Well, okay, going back to turning 40. Yeah. So you do look great. What are you doing to stay so youthful?
Starting point is 00:20:13 Like, how are we keeping this glow? What beauty treatments are you into? I don't do a ton of treatments. I do some light Botox. I don't do, I don't do filler. Yeah. I tried it. I was like. So you tried filler under your eyes? I did like a little under my eye and then I did a little here like a few years ago. Yeah. And I was like, yeah. Yeah. And then I just, I do like the facial massages every other. It makes a difference. Every other week. I love it. And then I just like, I'm very diligent. out, like, washing my face and doing stuff, but, like, I don't do anything crazy. Yeah, that's great. Yeah. Like, eat healthy. I eat pretty clean. I have a very restricted diet, mostly because of, like, intolerance. Oh, you've got up. Yeah, I'm not, I'm like the person you don't want to go to a restaurant with, but do you work out too. I play a lot of tennis. Nice. And I do Pilates. I know I have to start working out because everything in my algorithm is like, you're 40 now.
Starting point is 00:21:03 Right. Everything changes. Eat protein. Eat protein. Lift hefty thing. I'm a big protein phase right now. Like, the new trend. Everyone loves it. Everyone's all about protein these days. Yeah. Wait, what? So what things do you not eat? Are you like dairy, gluten? You're like, I don't eat. Yeah, dairy or grains. Not a lot of legumes. No, no, no lagumes. I try to, I try to limit my nightshades. You're like Tom Brady. No, I'm a bummer. And I'm like, I kept being like, am I crazy? And then I went and got tested and like everything just lit up. No, I know. I'm a sensitive little. But honestly, that's why you look so good because I really, I swear that stuff makes a difference too. Yeah, we're pretty good. I mean, listen, I love a French try and like,
Starting point is 00:21:41 I'll find like those like things that don't bother me. But yeah, I also like cut down a lot on drinking in the last couple years. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. I'm too tired. Well, I know. I can't do it anymore. No. When you've got kids, it just because it's too hard. Everything has to align for me. I'm like, the kids have to be with their dad. I have to be able to like sleep in the next day. I have to. Usually it's like when I come out to L.A. And I don't have my kids. I'm like, all right. But I used to love like a glass of wine like at night. And I can't even do that anymore. Just because you feel awful the next day. I do. I feel bad. I don't sleep well. Yeah. So now I'm just like special occasions great, but yeah, it's not like a ritual for me anymore. I know. I get it. I get it. So, okay, you, I think over the years, you've been pretty selective with what you'll kind of revisit and what you won't. So I'm curious why you agreed to do the reunion. So I agreed to do the reunion because, well, there was a couple reasons. One, obviously this started off because you and Stephen did your podcast and you did such a good job. Like I love how you like, celebrated that show. Like, it was really fun. Like, you were just reliving memories. And I was like, oh, that was a really nice way to do that. So I felt good about that. And then when you came on the pod. I did, of course. Which was great. No, and that was. And then, yeah, when I talked to Stephen afterwards, he was like, we're going to do this. I was like, great. So I was like, if we can do it in
Starting point is 00:22:58 this way, that sounds really nice. I'm also like at a point where I don't really do anything anymore. And I would love to put a pin in my career on television. And I was like, it would be really cool to end my career with the same people I started it with. Oh, I love that. Like the same group of people I started with, I can also say goodbye with. It just felt. Oh, I like that a lot. Yeah. Felt clean. Yeah. Yeah. I was like, this is a group of people that like, oh, that's so sweet. Yeah. So I thought that would be nice. And then when this is all over, I can just hang up that entertainment hat. Yeah. I'm excited. So this is for sure your last thing. I, God, I hope so. So you don't miss it at all? I don't. Good for you. I don't. I'm so happy. I'm like, I feel so lucky. Because you
Starting point is 00:23:40 know, a lot of times, like, it goes, it can go a lot of ways when you've been in entertainment for a long time. And I think a lot of people really miss it. And I didn't. I enjoyed it while I had it. Like, we had fun. It was great. And I'm really grateful for the opportunity. And I know that because I did all that, I'm able to live the life I live now. But I love like just being with my fam and my friends and living a quieter life. Do you think you got kind of burnt out? Because I mean, you did. So Lagoon to Beach your senior year of high school and then you went straight into the hills. No, I did second season of Laguna as well. Oh, that's, not a lot.
Starting point is 00:24:13 I was like back and forth. So I went to, yes, I went to college and then like week one, the first weekend I was at college was the VMAs. Yes. And then I came home every single weekend to do VOs. So I didn't really get like, I wasn't. You didn't have a break. Yeah, it's one of the reasons I left San Francisco is like I never put down roots there.
Starting point is 00:24:30 I was there for like four days out of the week. I was constantly traveling and I was like, this is too hard to do. So I'm going to come closer and then did the second season. And then, yeah, and then went and did the hills for a handful of years. How many years was it? I don't remember. I wanted like maybe six seasons. I might have it in monotes. Was it, I think, did you do it when you were 18 to 23? Does that? I think I did it longer than that. I think I was at least 24 when I left. Okay. But so, I mean, that's a long time. It was a long time. And did you have breaks in between seasons? I can't even remember now. Yes and no. They used. So they were planned to do breaks. They were supposed to do breaks. But I think between season one and two, Jason and I broke up. Oh. And then they said no more breaks. The camera's up. Literally, like, they pulled people out of their vacations and they were like, get to her apartment. She's like crying on the floor and get in there. And it was terrible. That's crazy. That was, it's right. That was like one of like the worst times in my life, but it was also kind of amazing because I'll never forget, like being there, I'm heartbroken. I'm crying. And I remember looking up at one point and seeing several of the crew members crying. And it felt like family to me. I was like, oh, these are people that care about me. Like, I love that we have this. But yeah, after that, no more breaks. That is wild.
Starting point is 00:25:41 Yeah, we would just roll in to the next season. Yeah, I mean, I would imagine towards the end you were like, get me out of here. Did you ever, were you ever able to keep anything for yourself off camera? Well, when I left, I was in a relationship that I had kept off camera for probably about a year. Wow. Yeah. You were able to keep a relationship off camera for a year. It was just not an option.
Starting point is 00:26:00 He didn't want to be on camera. So, yeah. Or did they have you dating on the show still or no? What did you say on the show? I don't remember. I don't remember. They probably like hinted it stuff. But at that point, like, towards the end, I sort of faded to the back.
Starting point is 00:26:13 I think other people had bigger. Yeah. And I remember when they told me you were going to come out, I was like, excellent. Wait, okay. So you knew. Let me pass this baton. Yes. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:26:22 You knew what Heidi and Spencer's wedding. Yeah. Oh. I don't know if I knew you were going to be there. I knew you were coming in the next season. Got it. And I, for me, I always felt like I couldn't leave until I knew that the show could go on without me because I didn't want my decision to be.
Starting point is 00:26:36 I didn't want to shut it down for everybody. Right. Everybody liked to be on the show. Yeah. I had had enough. I probably would have quit like two seasons earlier. Oh, interesting. But I was like, I need to keep going. And then when they were like, Kristen will come in, I was like, that is great. Wow. Okay. Well, I'm happy that you knew. Yeah, I knew. No, no, no. They told me. Okay. But you didn't know if I was going to be a Heidi and Spencer's wedding. And I didn't know you were blue. Like, what are the chances. And then today you showed up in a denim. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Hey, you know what? I'm watching. I'm just trying to copy you. The fact that we both wore blue to Heidi and Spencer's wedding.
Starting point is 00:27:10 But like a very specific. Very. Yeah. Like there's obviously a lot of shades of blue. No, no. That was very funny. What in the world? What did you think when you saw me?
Starting point is 00:27:18 I thought, that B is wearing blue. What are the chances? I live in my first thought is I was like, production did this. I know. That's what everybody thought. I know. Oh, I only saw you for a second. I was trying to get out of there actually.
Starting point is 00:27:31 Remember that there was like a generator went down. It was a whole thing. Oh, yeah. And I just rewere. watched it a couple months ago. And so they do have you like bolting out of there too. Well, I was supposed to leave. So my real boyfriend at the time had a premiere for like an indie film he had done that night. So I was like, I have a heart out at this time. And they were like, then the power went out and they literally like, you cannot leave. We need you in the scene.
Starting point is 00:27:54 Which I understand. It's my job. But I was like, guys, I have to go. Like my, this is my real life and I got to go. So it's funny. They have a, they had a scene of me driving away from the church. Yeah. That's a different day. Oh, of course. Because I ran out. I was like, I'm late. Like, this is like my actual life. I got to go.
Starting point is 00:28:11 So that's a different day. Then he was like, all right, get that dress. He's like, he's like looking at your head. It's like, curl your hair the same way. Oh, my God. So the driveway scene is just me in front of an empty church. Oh, that's so funny. I know.
Starting point is 00:28:23 All those little tidbits. And you filmed an ending for the Hills too. I did. Which I think that they've actually released that at some point. They did. Yeah, yeah. It was like a funny thing. They were like, come and just shoot a quick end.
Starting point is 00:28:34 There you guys. What did you think? because it was you and Brooke, it was saying goodbye to me and then I'm coming home to you, right? Yes, I liked the ending. They did. I thought it was, I mean, yeah, it was iconic. It was kind of iconic. I love the day. We'll never take that away from him. He's a genius. But we were at the finale. I came. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And he was still pissed. He was like, they're not going to use your ending. Because he was. Because he was. Because he was. Because he was. Because he was. Because he was. He was fighting. I don't think we knew. I don't think we knew until right before which ending they were going to do. Oh, I knew. Because he was bummed. He was, okay. He was fighting. He was. He was fighting. He was. He was. He was. He was. He was. He was. He was with Liz and Tony about it. I can't believe you want this. Was that the finale party that we did at the Roosevelt? Oh my God, how funny when they used to do the live shows for it. It was fun. What a time. I know. It's so crazy. I know. You typically, I think you've kind of stayed away from revisiting the hills, right? Talking about it. Yeah. Why? What happened on that that was, it's kind of hard to go back to? Like, it seems like you're a little more open to talking about Laguna. I am. I think, just to be totally transparent,
Starting point is 00:29:35 I have more relationship with people in Laguna. Yeah. Like those are, a lot of these people are still really close friends of mine. Yeah. Like, a lot of the guys, like I still talk to and see and... Do you talk to anyone from the hills anymore? Not really, no. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:48 No. Except for Sophia, who's the talent producer. Oh, my gosh. I love Sophia. You guys were good friends, aren't you? Yeah, she's still really good of mine. I love her. She was great.
Starting point is 00:29:54 Yeah, yeah, yeah. She was like a big sister to me. I remember at the reunion, I think I asked you about this. I had heard, I don't know, where, when you and Lowe had a falling out. I remember I asked you, I was like, are you guys good? Yeah. So we didn't have like a falling out. She moved to New York. I was living here. We just sort of grew apart. Yeah. And it wasn't like something that happened. It was just like, you know, that happens with relationships. I will say in the last couple years, we have sort of reconnected. And it's been really nice to see her again. And, you know, I'm so, so happy for her. She's her baby. I know. Well, and you guys have such a great scene in the reunion. Because you went to New York. You filmed with her when she was about to pop. Yes. Yeah. It was perfect. I was going there anyways. And they were like, oh, we really wish we had. get low. And I was like, I'm going to be in New York in like two days. Like, let's just do it. I love it. I know. It would have felt weird not to have her. No, I'm really glad we made it
Starting point is 00:30:40 work. Yeah. This one's for my parents. Let's talk about Haya. Taylor Farms just launched a protein forward line that packs serious protein.
Starting point is 00:35:42 We're talking fresh veggies and protein packed dressings, toppings, and crunch all in one. Chop salad kits with up to 21 grams of protein, which is about two times the protein of current chopped salads, and complete salad bowls with up to 23 grams of protein. Mini salad kits, the perfect portion for one. Now pack 10 grams of protein. If I can do it, you can too. Grab a Taylor Farms chopped salad kit and get your salad together. How do rumors like that start? You just don't see each other and like, yeah, I mean, we were really close friends. We were always together when we lived together. Because we lived together in L.A. I know. Yeah. Yeah, we lived together for years. We lived together after the hills. Yeah. So she was still filming the hills and I was living with her.
Starting point is 00:36:31 Oh, I didn't know that. Yes. I was still living with her. So she would come home from filming. Tell you about all the shenanigans that we were getting into. Oh, my God. I was done. Yeah. No, we lived together for a really long time. So then, yeah. So then she just moved to another coast and we were both busy. Yeah. But I'm like so incredibly happy and proud of her. Like she really did it. Look at everyone all grown up. It's crazy. I will say it's funny. I was watching this reunion at the very end when I were like, look at us, look at us. And we're talking about everyone at a group, but it sounds like we're talking about. We're like, look at you. Wait, that's hilarious. And I'm like, ooh, I hope people don't take that to the wrong way. Because we're like, we're doing all right.
Starting point is 00:37:10 You and me. And I think we met like, like, emotionally. Like everyone feels pretty stable. But like, that's a thousand percent what we meant. Yes, but I'm watching it. I'm like, well, I can be taking it a different way. We're just like padding each other. Look at us.
Starting point is 00:37:24 We're out here killing it. I can't wait for everyone to see the reunion, but that scene in particular. I hope they like it. Because I've seen stuff like this of, like, like stuff that was like really like a part of my childhood or you know growing up and it's so cool to see. I'm like, oh, like, I know. I'll see photos of like people from the OC together and I'm like, oh, there's no friend. Rachel Bilsen just came on. Oh, really? Yeah. Yeah, she's the best. But I know. Well, and you loved Ben McKenzie, right? Wasn't that like, I loved them both. Don't make me choose. Oh, that's right. This was a storyline
Starting point is 00:37:51 on Laguna. Was it? I think it was. I'm pretty sure it was. Yeah, it was. That's funny. What was the hardest thing that you ever had to go through publicly? Oh, gosh, that's a good question. Because, I mean, unfortunately, it's like, you didn't really get to have a say in half of the stuff that would come out. No, I don't know that there was, like, one thing that was really hard. I think that there were a few years that were really hard. On the hills? Yeah, during that time, and honestly, it was like, it wasn't so much filming.
Starting point is 00:38:19 It was just the culture and, like, what paparazzi was like during those times. Like, it was really hard. We, you know, we didn't live in, like, a gated community. So, like, there were cars outside our house. Like, at one point, they would, like, climb. like they were climbing trees and shooting into my bedroom window. I mean, that, they were climbing my walls and shooting, like, I remember I was laying out in a bathing suit and, like, there was houses all around me and they had like gone into my
Starting point is 00:38:41 neighbor's yard, climbed a yard and were like taking pictures of me. And I was just like in my, like, thank God with like a top on because there's like no one could see me. That is insane. So it just felt I just, it was very difficult during those years just like not to have any privacy. If I wanted to leave my house, I'd like lay down in the back seat of a car. Like, It was just a weird time. And that was really hard for me. I mean, that's insane. I will say, like, recently we were in an airport and I was with my whole family.
Starting point is 00:39:08 We were going on vacation. And a guy came up to me and introduced himself and said, hey, I'm with TMZ. He's like, I see the ear with your kids, but I'm wondering if you would be willing to do a video. I know who this is at the airport. And he's the nicest guy on the planet. And I was like, oh. And like, my kids don't understand any of this. I never see any of it.
Starting point is 00:39:24 So I was like, if it's cool, like, because my kids are here. And he was like, no worry. alone. Totally. No worries. And I was like, like, it's a whole new world. It's a whole new world. I know. He was like, that was wild. Yeah. And it's so smart because by the way, if I was by myself and I ran into him again, I would absolutely talk to him for a minute. Yep. Because he was so respectful of my family and privacy. And that's how it should be. I agree. With kids. Well, and I know that. It's confusing to them. It's very confusing. It's scary,
Starting point is 00:39:48 I think. And I know in the last however many years, there's been a few laws that have been put in place. Which are great. Thank God. Yes. Because. Yeah. It's just not normal. for kids to be growing up like that. No, but I love it. It's a good experience. Yeah. It was like, oh, I'm so glad they're doing that now. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:04 That's really great. Do you feel like, because we didn't have social media either, right? When the tabloids were crazy. Can you imagine? No. No, I would have been in way more trouble. Oh, yeah. But on one hand, I don't know, maybe it would have been okay to be able to go on and kind of
Starting point is 00:40:21 control your voice because that's something we didn't have. Yes. But you would have gotten so many opinions. at you. True. Whereas, like, the next episode came out and everyone kind of forgot about last week. That's true. So, like, we moved past it so quickly.
Starting point is 00:40:34 And, like, there's not a timeline of all of it that lives online. That's true. You know, the internet can be so mean. Like, I feel really grateful that I didn't. That's true. To be young like that. Like, yeah, I, for one year, I remember I didn't have internet in my house and I turned off cable because I didn't want to see any coverage.
Starting point is 00:40:51 Wow. Because it was just so hard to hear all these opinions because you would get frustrated. You'd be like, you don't know the whole story. Right? Yeah. So being on reality TV for so many years, obviously people think that they know you. Is there a side of you that we never got to see? Phone a friend.
Starting point is 00:41:13 Spill it. I mean, I'm more relaxed when I'm not on a camera. Yeah. I don't know. Probably. I don't know. Did you feel like it was you on there? Parts of me.
Starting point is 00:41:26 Yeah. I mean, you know it's edited. Like they're going to. going to take the pieces that they want. Yeah. But I think it was a piece of me. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:33 I mean, there was definitely things where I was like, well, that's not how that went down. I think I'm definitely more relaxed when I'm not filming. I think I'm sillier when I'm not filming. And they just never showed that. Or maybe you just didn't do that on camera. Also, like, think about how they were filming. Like, a lot of it was like out at nightclubs while I was drinking. Right, right.
Starting point is 00:41:49 Wait, I saw a clip the other day. And I, it's funny, I think since this reunion, since I started following you and a couple other people, my algorithm is now like a lot of Laguna. content and it's like people who do skits. Oh, how funny. Have you seen Eric Feldman? This might be what I saw. There was like, I saw one the other day where it was like us all at a party. Yes, the party in Laguna. There's a, oh my, no, but it's, I was like, I got idiot shivers when I watched it. I was like, oh, no. Someone says like, oh, I'm on East Coast time and I'm like, we're on South Coast. And I'm just like, what is wrong with you? But I feel like it's important to remember that South Coast Plaza is right next to me. And that's why I said,
Starting point is 00:42:26 I totally got it. I understand. Did it. But other people don't know that. I was like, what an idiot. It's so great though. So you're saying so, it's just embarrassing. But I think you like, I'm getting better at just laughing at myself. I'm just like, well, that was. Also, we were teenagers. I mean, we were drunk and we were teenagers. And we said dumb shit all the time. But I'm just like now, I'm just like, oh, God. I'm just shaking my head at myself. How funny are those reenactments, though? So funny. I didn't know those existed. He's so good at them. He does all of them. I didn't know. Oh, are you on TikTok? No.
Starting point is 00:42:58 Genius. I don't. I don't do a lot of social media. I know because you don't even post your birthday photos. You need to post your birthday. Are you going to post the reunion? I should. I think I could actually have to. They're like, ma'am. I think I need you. You have to. I posted the original thing. Oh yeah. You did. I love it. You're like, I don't care. Well, they originally gave me that purple square. I was like, can I put a photo in front of that? Yeah. No, guys. Come on. Oh, no. No, it's so funny. Well, okay, so you, you met Heidi up in San Francisco. She came and filmed Laguna with us. She did. You guys went off and did the hills. You guys were genuinely really good friends. And I would imagine that, you know, you guys are doing the hills now.
Starting point is 00:43:41 That friendship is falling apart. How did you feel when that was going on? I would imagine that was a hard time. I think going through anything really real and personal on camera is hard. It's just, I mean, going through breakups, like anything like that. It's just hard. It's really hard. Yeah, because you're like, I don't know. It feels funny to like put it on TV for people's entertainics. You're like, this heartbreak's real for me. Did you ever have a hard time being vulnerable and opening up on camera? I think so. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, sometimes I couldn't, I couldn't hold it back. I mean, it's funny because I cry a lot on that show and like I'm not really a crier. Oh, that's funny. Like, in real life. Like, I don't cry that often. Well, my favorite meme of you is the one the one with
Starting point is 00:44:22 the masculine tears. Yeah. Like, yeah, I think that I like, I cry. Yeah, I cried a lot. Oh, was I okay. Like, I, do you ever like see, like, see, those ages? Do you ever see to cry sometimes? Like, you haven't cried for a while? No. Like, you cut an onion. It's really good for you to cry. I do this sometimes. I have no, I cry in movies. Like, I'm, no, no, I'll cry at sentimental things, but it's like a tiny cry. Like, I love a good, ugly cry. It's so therapeutic. I will do big ugly cries in movies. Like, I'm not kidding. Maybe I'm not watching the right now. I just cried at the bodyguard. I was watching it was say, well, okay, everyone would cry in the movie. Yeah, no, I mean, I'll throw an Armageddon. Everyone's so I need it. But sometimes
Starting point is 00:44:57 You know you feel a little funny and you're like, I just need a good cry. I will literally go chop an onion. I'll seat it. And then I'll have a good cry. And I feel so much better after a lot. I know because it's literally, you're getting it out. I know. Yes.
Starting point is 00:45:09 I know. You get in trouble when you hold it in. But I didn't eat onions back. Did not need onions. You were crying left and right. How many breakups did you go through on the hills? On camera? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:19 I don't know. Just. Only a few. Only a few. Jason, right? I think that's it. Who else did you date on the hills? I mean, like,
Starting point is 00:45:26 Well, Brody, but like, yeah. Were there other guys? I know it's hard to remember. I think I went on dates, but I don't, I don't think I, I'm so sorry if I'm forgetting something. I don't think. Oh, Doug. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:45:40 Sorry, I'm like, I know there was someone else. That's actually so funny. I know. He, yeah, I ran into him at a club and I was just like, how are you? And then, yeah, he just ended up, he was actually a great filming boyfriend. I could see that. He's such a nice guy. He's very.
Starting point is 00:45:54 Yeah, he was great. I think it was. It was pretty short-lived. I think I had to break up with him on camera and I felt really bad about it. That's the worst. It was bad because he's a nice guy. He's a nice guy. We just were better as friends.
Starting point is 00:46:07 Yeah. Do you have any celebrity hookups that no one ever knew about? None that I will tell you. Oh, Lauren. Give us one. No, I don't. No one that would. No, I'm not going to try.
Starting point is 00:46:20 Just try. No, sorry. We'll be the judgment of that. Yeah. Fine. Yeah. Did you, let's see, what else can I ask you then? If you won't spill the tea on that, what about okay, maybe just a date? Did you go on a date with someone that we would be like, oh, cool. Yeah. A lot. How did you keep that stuff private with all the paparazzi back in the day? Well, some of them got
Starting point is 00:46:41 photographed, but then it was like maybe it's a rumor. Maybe it's not. Don't Google. Don't Google. Goose, get on the Google. No. I mean, yeah, I mean, you would go on dates with people, but no, I don't like. Would there be, would you walk out then and there'd be photographers? Yeah, always. I know. Always, always, right? It's changed now. I will say the paparazzi I know. Well, I think that now with social media, people, like, you're giving the internet and publications content willingly. Yeah. And they're like, great, I don't need to pay anything for this. No. And everyone's happy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think it's good. I guess there were some places you could go back in the day, too, that you knew it was probably a safe bet. Where would you go?
Starting point is 00:47:14 I'm sure. I feel like Silver Lake was always kind of safe. Oh, I didn't know. Yeah. Yeah. That's where I would go with my Hill's cameraman. Do you know that I got up with a camera man? I do. Wait. The brunette. I go. Miguel. That's right. I never huffed up with any crew, but I know a lot of people did. You missed out. I remember, oh my God, but I do remember, I don't want to get anyone in trouble. There was one of the girls on the crew. I don't remember her name.
Starting point is 00:47:38 I really don't. She was hooking up with one of the guys. Oh, that's funny. Maybe Frankie. I don't know. Oh, well, that tracks. I was like, are you allowed to do that? So good.
Starting point is 00:47:48 Nothing like a set romance. You know, you ran out of guys and there. Miguel was there. Yeah. Oh, my God. Did you like date date? We, I guess, yeah, we like hung out for a couple months. And we kept it a secret.
Starting point is 00:48:01 I was dating Brody on the show. And so I was like, we're being professional. Totally. And then you were doing your job? We were doing my job. We, he came with me to Canada for the Much Music Awards. Did you ever go for their like MTV Movie Awards? I used to go for the after show with Dan, though.
Starting point is 00:48:15 That was fun. So fun. That was really fun. Yeah. And at the airport on the way home, paparazzi got us a week before we wrapped and they fired him. Oh, really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:24 And I remember, I fought with him. With Adam, I was like, you guys would have never had any idea. Yeah. We've been nothing but professional. Yeah. Whoops. Yeah, we, I know. Well, Whitney, married. She married. How was that okay? Well, they're married with a kid now. I guess, yeah. But like, I've thought about that many a times. I'm like, wait, how is she okay to do that? I know. Wait, how about you? Are you nervous for any of the press or do you, you're okay with it? So it's funny because I'm actually similar to you. Even though, yeah, I've, like, dipped in and out of TV for years. I have never been 100% comfortable in front of the camera. So I will, I'll be a little nervous. Okay. I think it would be nice to have the three of us
Starting point is 00:49:00 together, you mean, Steven, you know, to jump it all off. So that will probably help. Okay. But we're in this together. It'll be okay. I saw they move the date. What? They moved the date. Of the, oh, of the today show. So we can have Easter with our kids. I saw that. I was so glad that you jammed in on that too and said that you would like, do with your kids on Easter. I was like, I had no idea it was Easter. No, no, no. I'm glad they could make it. I know, thank God. Okay, I want to talk to you about your marriage. So how did you, yeah, how did you know that William, or what was different about William that made him stand out to you? Oh, gosh. And actually, how did you guys meet?
Starting point is 00:49:35 Start with that. We met. We got a meet cute. Love. We got set up on a blind date on Valentine's Day. No way. Jill. Yes.
Starting point is 00:49:43 Her very good friend from college went to law school with William. And so I knew her through Jill. And she was like, I have this guy who I'm going to school with. And I just feel like you guys would get along. Wow. So she's like, I'm going to bring it. We were doing a big El Carmen. We were doing a big dinner at El Carmen for Valentine's Day, a bunch of us.
Starting point is 00:49:58 She's like, I'm going to bring him to the dinner. Love. Not as much pressure. No, no. It was a big dinner. But we like, we went out afterwards and we like shut down the bar. Cute. And just like we're immediately in.
Starting point is 00:50:10 I love that. Yeah. I went to Africa like two weeks after we met and we would write each other these really long emails every day. And actually for Christmas this year, I put them into a book for him. Cute. Because it was like how we fell in love. That's so sweet. I love that you still had them. You know what? It was really funny. He like left his email open on my computer. He was doing something and I was like, I wonder if he still has them. Wow. Because I changed my email address when I had a new name and I don't even know how to get in my own. And I like searched and I found them. Stealing. That's what I'm stealing him? What's a good gift? Yeah, he's hard to give gifts too. So I felt good about that. I like that. So what was it about him that stood out to you? What was different about him? You know what? It was just easy with him. Like we just communicated together. It felt very safe. I just, I loved him very quickly, like too
Starting point is 00:51:00 quickly. Apparently not. I'm no. I'm just like, no, I think that like the relationships I had come off of like it, you know, it took a long time to like trust them and whatever. And I think, I think we were like a month and a half in and we were like openly and like we were telling each other, we loved each other. And yeah, he moved in after like four months. Wow. I know. You know, I know. Yeah, we moved pretty quick. And you guys have been together for how long? We have been together. We got married in 2012.
Starting point is 00:51:28 Okay. I'm not right. No, no, I'm sorry. We met in 2012. No, that's wrong. We met in 2012. We got married in 2014. So, what, 12?
Starting point is 00:51:36 Long time. I mean, a long time. Should know that. I can't do math. Don't ask me. I feel like we just celebrated. 11. Something.
Starting point is 00:51:45 What's math? I don't know. It's okay. It's all good. It should be 12, 12 this year. Yeah. Yeah, it sounds about right. It's hard because we celebrate when we met and when we get married.
Starting point is 00:51:54 So I get the numbers next. Yeah. No, that's cute. Yeah. What's the key to a successful marriage, would you say? I think it's just being with the right person. Yeah. I think it's luck, right?
Starting point is 00:52:05 Like, because also you, like, grow and change and we're really lucky that we've grown together. And we are really aligned on what we want out of life and what we expect from one another. He's so cheesy. He's my best friend. So, like, we just get along. Yeah, we don't really fight. we just kind of like talk it out. I feel very lucky to have found him. He's a great dad. Oh, so great. Which, like, that's just luck, right? Like, when you meet someone, you're,
Starting point is 00:52:29 you hope that they'll be a good parent. You don't know. But, like, he's a much better parent than me. He's got, like, endless patience. He's so good. Yeah. I think it's like, yeah, I got, I got really lucky. I got a great family, too. So, like, that's important. I know. I love his family. Yeah. Like, where's his family? They're all close by. He has one sister on the East Coast, but his other sister is right by me and his mom's there. Yeah. Wow, that's great. And your dad is in Laguna. My dad is in Laguna. My brother and sister. They're like 10 minutes out. But they're right there. But my dad, brother and sister all live right there. So you guys get together a lot. We do a lot of family stuff. With both families. Yeah. Yeah. Like when we do holidays, it's both of our families. We're lucky. We're both the oldest. We've both, you know, we had the first grandkids. So it kind of brought everyone together. But my sister just had a baby. My sister in law just had a baby. And my brother and his wife are about to have a baby. So it's like the next. That's so fun. I know. And now you can be the wise aunt. Yes, I'm done.
Starting point is 00:53:25 I have no more babies. I'm like, give me your baby. I will babysit. I will do all the things. It's great. I love it. It's good because like, you know, ours, like my six year old, I'm like, there's no baby left in him.
Starting point is 00:53:35 And I'm like, you know, we have the conversation. We're like, we don't want it there. Like, no, right? Would you ever? We can't. Oh, okay. Done. Bye.
Starting point is 00:53:42 We're ship is ill. No, no, no, we're good. We're so good. But it's like I get my little baby fix with them. Exactly. Yeah. So nice. It's great.
Starting point is 00:53:49 I love it. Sounds like things are really good. Yeah. Just happy. No complaints. Happy and content. I love it. All right. Well, my last question for you is, are you going to be voting for Spencer in the election?
Starting point is 00:53:58 Oh, my, well, I don't live here, so I won't be voting. Great answer. Thank you. Lauren, thank you. Thanks for doing this. This was so great.
