Let's Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari - What Your Dreams Are Really Trying to Tell You with Dream Expert Lauri Loewenberg

Episode Date: September 8, 2026

Dream expert Lauri Loewenberg is here to decode the hidden meaning behind the dreams you've been having—and trust me, we get into everything. We discuss visitation dreams, lucid dreaming, r...ecurring nightmares, déjà vu, precognitive dreams, and whether our subconscious is actually trying to guide us while we sleep. Lauri breaks down what some of the most common dreams really mean (yes, teeth falling out, being chased, pregnancy, tornadoes, dirty bathrooms, and more), why certain symbols keep showing up, and how your dreams can help you navigate relationships, career decisions, and major life changes. We also talk about how to start remembering your dreams, the best way to journal them, what nightmares are really trying to tell you, whether dreaming about someone means they're thinking about you, and if it's actually possible to communicate with your subconscious through lucid dreaming. This conversation completely changed the way I think about dreams—and I have a feeling you're going to start paying a lot more attention to yours too.Primal Kitchen: Find Primal Kitchen Buffalo sauce at your local grocery store or on Primalkitchen.comWayfair: Get prepped for patio season for way less. Starting point is 00:00:00 The following podcast is a dear media production. This is Let's Be Honest with Kristen Cavalry, a podcast all about getting real and open on everything from sex, relationships, reality TV, wellness, family, and so much more. And just a fair warning, there will probably be some oversharing. Lori, I'm so excited you're here. I'm so excited you invited me. It's so nice to meet you. It's so nice to meet you.
Starting point is 00:00:29 I have a bazillion questions for you. Every person that I've told I have a dream expert coming on the podcast, they're so excited. I'm sure you get that everywhere you go. I'm very popular at parties. I believe it. I'm sure people would corner you and just want to know about their specific dreams. So, okay, I want to go back to the beginning because I'm so fascinated by this about how you, because you are a certified dream analysis. So when did you know you wanted to do this? And how does one become a dream analysis? Very good question. Well, I didn't grow up thinking I'm going to be a dream analyst when I grow up. It happened.
Starting point is 00:01:05 Well, I've always been very interested in my dreams. I can remember them since I was two, three years old. Wow. Yes. And so I would draw them when I was little. When I got older, I'd write them down. Little did I know what a wonderful thing I was doing for myself by documenting my dreams. But it wasn't until I was 19 and my grandfather died and he was the first person in my life to die.
Starting point is 00:01:29 You know, and I went into a deep depression. We were close. It was about two weeks after his death. And I had this dream where we're walking arm and arm through an art museum. And I knew he had died. And so I asked him, what's it like where you're at? And he said, I can't tell you that. But what I can tell you is that it is secure.
Starting point is 00:01:53 And then he gave me a hug. And he walked up the staircase. And that's when I woke up. But I could smell his old spice and I could still feel him. And I was like, what was that? That's a different dream than any kind of dream I've ever had. So that's the dream that propelled me to study dream psychology. Because I wanted to know, you know, why do we do this?
Starting point is 00:02:18 What is it? What's the purpose? And I was really impressed by how practical our dreams actually are, even though they seem, you know, fantastical or horrible, you know, or is it showing us the future, you know, they're actually very, very practical. And they're like our built-in therapists, are built-in brutally honest best friend that's going to tell us what we need to know right now. And so how did I become a dream analyst? Well, I studied dream psychology union in particular under a PhD. many years ago. This was before any site courses in universities who are offering anything in the
Starting point is 00:03:04 realm of dream psychology. Oh, wow. That's incredible. Well, let's start with visitation dreams since, you know, that's what kind of got you into this. So I've also had a visitation dream from my brother. And it was probably also like two weeks after he had passed. Okay. And once you experience a dream like that, you just know, I feel like it's this. knowing that that was in fact very different. And I remember hugging my brother in my dream. And I woke up and I was crying. But like it just, it feels different. It feels different. It feels different. But how do you explain that to someone who's never experienced a visitation dream? Like, how do you know? Well, there's just this inner knowing. Because like we both said,
Starting point is 00:03:46 it's the different. It feels very real. It never leaves you. Yeah. It's like you had it last night. Yeah. Yes. And it changes you. It does. It changes you because I had, you know, my grandfather's funeral was open casket. Yeah. I know. That's brutal. It is. And so when I saw his body, that wiped away everything I was brought up to believe that there's a heaven, you know, that there's life after death. That's why I spiraled into a depression. I was like, wow, this is it. We're just a body that doesn't even look like ourselves anymore. Yeah. But he came to me. me two weeks later and completely restored my faith. Not only restored it almost made me yearn for more. I need to know more about this. So the dream changes you and you just know. And also, they come with some kind of message. Yeah. And it's usually, I'm still here. Everything's fine. Mm-hmm. Oh, I just remember with my brother being like, I just wish I could hug him one more time. He died suddenly out of nowhere. And that was all I kept thinking for two weeks. I just want to hug him one more time. And in my dream, that's what I got to do. I hug him. I got to hug him. Wow. I know. It was incredibly powerful. Wow. And to your point, like I always forget my dreams, right? Like, I think we remember them initially in the morning and you forget him. But those visitation dreams, I will never forget it. Never. Never. I know every little detail. It becomes a part of you. Yes. That's a great way to.
Starting point is 00:05:23 explain it. Okay, so when we're dreaming, when we're sleeping, where do we go? Because I have heard our souls do, in fact, leave our body. Is there any truth to that? Well, what dreaming actually is, it is a thinking process. And it's a continuation of your thoughts stream from the day. So, you know, all day long, you're talking yourself, Kristen, don't forget to do this. Oh, Kristen, you should have said that. You know, oh, Kristen, what are we going to, you know, do about this? So you have this constant inner dialogue with yourself. And it continues as you're lying in bed and drifting off to sleep. Then once you enter REM dream sleep, which is when dreams take place, you're still thinking to yourself. That inner conversation is still going on. But now your brain's working a little
Starting point is 00:06:10 differently. So, for example, the part of the prefrontal cortex that controls rational linear thought is dormant. And the very center of the brain, the emotion, the most, center, the amygdala, is highly active. So that's why dreams can be very emotionally charged. And also why they seem to kind of jump around and aren't necessarily always linear. Yeah. Yeah. So you're still thinking and talking to yourself, but now you're talking to yourself in metaphors, symbols, emotions, and in memories. Let's talk about some of the symbols. Okay. So what are symbols that we all experience in dreams that maybe we're overlooking? Okay. And you tell me if you've had any of these.
Starting point is 00:06:52 Okay. Have you had the one where your teeth fallouts? No, but I know that's a very common one. Yes. Yes. This is super common. And I'm surprised you haven't had it yet since you're now doing podcasts. Oh, why? What does it mean? Well, it's really common for people in the radio industry, people who speak for a living because it's almost always. Now, of course, every person has their own personal experiences and their own personal symbols. But typically, archetypically, across the board, teeth falling out is usually connected to communication. And in particular, when you've said something you wish you could put back in your mouth. Oh, wow. When you've allowed something out, you should have thought about first and put back in. Yeah. Is it what speaking in front of an audience naked? Isn't that a big one too? Yes. Well, naked in public, there's all kinds of different variations to the naked and public dream. So when you get that one, it's because something's causing you to feel scrutinized or judged or even vulnerable. You may get this dream when you've done something you feel stupid about and now you're wondering how everyone else sees you. Okay, right. Are they seeing my big flaw that I just did? Right. The one where you're speaking in public,
Starting point is 00:08:05 that would be connected to communication. Okay. So maybe you get that when you said something stupid or you know there's something you have to say and you feel you might be judged for it. Yeah. Okay. What are some other ones that are common? How about tornadoes? Do you get tornadoes? Oh, gosh, no. Okay. What is that mean? We'll talk about some fun ones. Yeah. So the tornado dream is one of the most common recurring dreams. Oh, wow. That we get. And it's, any weather in a dream is usually a reflection of your emotions at the time of the dream because our emotions are the weather of our mind. So tornadoes are usually connected to worry and, anxiety that's spinning out of control. Oh, geez. Yes. So if you get that dream a lot, that's a good indication. You are a proud card carrying member of the Worrywork Club. And the dream's showing, you know, even though dreams can be very frightening, they're good for you. They're giving you a takeaway because they're allowing you to look at something differently.
Starting point is 00:09:07 So if you get the tornado dream, it's allowing you to look at your mind as a worried mind as destructive. To your peace of mind. So what can you do? Let's say you have that dream. You wake up in the morning. Should you journal? Or is it just a reminder that, okay, we got to work through what we're going through. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:27 So a dream like that, and any dream that you get is showing you your life and your current situation in a different perspective so you can better understand it. And you should always journal your dreams. Okay. Always. Number one, because if you don't, it'll be gone after breakfast. So you want to capture it before it's gone. And also you're documenting the other side of your mind.
Starting point is 00:09:49 Yeah. The wiser, more brutally honest side of your mind. So if you journal your day along with your dreams, you'll be able to make connections. Every time I dream, I'm getting attacked by a bear. Oh, I had a conversation with my mother. Oh, interesting. Yeah. So you start to see patterns.
Starting point is 00:10:12 patterns and how different relationships truly affect you, how decisions truly affect you. And so, and I do have an app. We can talk about it later that journals and decodes your dream for you. Cool. I know. And people, we'll talk about it at the end, but people can also book appointments with you too, right? Absolutely. Yes. Yeah. Okay. So we'll, we'll talk about that at the end. So I feel like I hardly ever remember my dreams. Why do some people remember them all the time, it seems like? And then there's people like me who it's so rare that I actually do. So there's a couple things at play there. One is the way you wake up. That's the biggest factor of how well you're going to remember your dreams. So are you the type that just jumps out of bed and gets your day going when you wake up?
Starting point is 00:10:58 No. Oh, so you linger in bed? It depends. I mean, during the school year, yes. But right now, because it's summer, no, I kind of lay in bed for a few. Okay, good. So this is the perfect time for you to start remembering them. Okay. So typically people who linger in bed can remember their dreams a lot more easily than people who jump out and just start your day. So what you want to do is when you wake up, stay in the exact same position you woke up in. Okay. Because that is the position your body was in when you were dreaming. Okay. Right. So if you roll over, it's like unplugging yourself. Oh. From the dream you were literally in seconds ago because we tend to wake up right after each session of R.m. Dream sleep. Oh. So stay put.
Starting point is 00:11:42 Okay. Don't go over. Okay. Keep your eyes closed. I'm going to do this tomorrow. And don't, yes. And let me know how it goes. I will.
Starting point is 00:11:49 And don't think about anything. Okay. And just let the dream come back to you. You've got this magical like three minute window where you can capture it. Okay. Because remember, you were just there in another world. Right. Seconds ago.
Starting point is 00:12:03 Let it come back to you. And then whatever you remember, even if it's just there's a song in your, your mind or maybe remember something about a dog, write it down. Okay. Because the more you do this, it's like working a muscle. The stronger it'll get and you'll start remembering your dreams every morning. And you'll be like me one day and remember all your dreams every night. That is so cool. So you wake up in the morning and you remember everything. Yeah. Well, so I tend to wake up a couple times throughout the night. Okay. Because, you know, after each session of every 90 minutes we dream. Oh. And after each cycle of dreaming, you jump back up to the alpha state. And you.
Starting point is 00:12:39 the very first stage of sleep. So it's kind of an in-between state. Whoa. And so when I wake up in the middle of the night, I know I just dream, so I'll just lay there. And then I'll remember it all. And I'll go, okay, I remember this in the morning, then I fall back asleep. And I do. Wow. Yeah. That is so cool. Do you have reoccurring dreams? I am. I certainly do. What's yours? The bear? Was that a real dream? No, no, no, no. That's not my. So I have quite a few. Which one shall I share with you? Lately, I've been having recurring dreams about hot curlers.
Starting point is 00:13:14 Oh, funny. What does that mean? So your hair usually in dreams will represent your thoughts, your plans, that which is on your mind, that which sprouts from your head like your hair does. Oh, cool. Okay, so what are hot rollers? well, they keep the style in place, right? So this dream that I've been having lately in the last month or so is about formulating plans
Starting point is 00:13:40 and making sure they stay in place. Whoa. How do you know, like how did you come up with that, though? How do you know that? Good question. Okay, so I did study dream psychology, so I do have an understanding of how the dreaming mind works. And are there like hair means this, you know, a waterfall means this?
Starting point is 00:13:59 Yes. So there's a couple layers to that. So we have like what I mentioned before is the archetypal meanings, which are symbols that pretty much mean the same for all of us generally. Yep. So generally, hair will symbolize thoughts, ideas, plants. Right. That which is on your mind because hair is on your head. But, you know, you have your own personal experience. If you're a hairdresser, it's going to mean something different to you. Right. Right. So the other layer to have. you figure out what the different symbols mean for you is it's a little trick. You can do it two ways, the Webster's dictionary way or the preschool way. Okay. So if I'm working with a client and we're kind of stuck on a symbol, I'll say, okay, pretend you're teaching a preschool class about what hot rollers are. What would you tell them? What is a hot roller? What is the nature of a hot roller? What is the purpose of a hot roller. So, you know, explain it to me like I'm five. So if you take on that mindset and just come up with your own version, what comes to your mind when you think of why we use them, your exact words that you come up with will apply to the meaning to you. Makes sense.
Starting point is 00:15:15 Yeah. That is so cool. So I like to pull the definition out of my clients when I'm working with them. I love. Okay, that makes sense. Right, because it's all unique to ourselves. Okay, what would you say is the biggest misconception that people have about dreams? That they don't mean anything. Yeah. That they're random nonsense and nothing could be further from the truth. Isn't that so wild? So are you constantly trying to convince people that they do, in fact, have a lot of meaning?
Starting point is 00:15:44 Always. Yeah. Now, when I first started this about 30 years ago and I was living here in Nashville at the time. Oh, wow. And, you know, we are in the Bible Belt here. Oh, yeah. So I would get a lot of, well, only Jesus can tell you what your dreams mean. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:58 There's a lot of that here. Yes. I get that. But when are you going to be able to book a session with them? Right, right, right. So dreams aren't this untouchable thing that we shouldn't explore. They're very, very practical. They are your thoughts.
Starting point is 00:16:17 Yeah. They're your night thoughts. The other side of your mind talking to you about what's going on in your life right now and trying to help you get it right. They're like your built-in GPS, pointing you in the right direction, pointing you away from big mistakes. Yeah. So really with that, and I know earlier you said it's sort of, did you say it was like therapy
Starting point is 00:16:38 almost? Yeah, it's like a built-in therapist. Like a therapist. So we can look to our dreams for guidance with relationships. Yes. Like big decisions. Yes. Career.

Starting point is 00:22:16 Download the Vinted app for free and start listing. With no seller fees, you keep every dollar you earn. Okay, so let's talk about relationships. How can we look to our dreams for relationship advice? Like, let's say someone is in a marriage and they don't know if they want to leave or not. I get that question a lot because I'm divorced. Okay. So how could someone who's teetering back and forth on that decision look to their dreams for some guidance?
Starting point is 00:22:49 Okay. Very good question. So first of all, it's always a great idea. you're ready to start working with your dreams is to keep that day journal, along with your dream journal, because your dreams answer your day questions. So you need to keep them together. So your dreams will keep track of how you're doing emotionally and psychologically. So if you start finding dreams with negative themes more than positive, hopeful themes,
Starting point is 00:23:20 that's showing you where you are psychologically and emotionally in your relationship. There are certain symbols that will point to a relationship that are an archetype like dogs. Oh. Number one, you dream of a dog. It's most likely going to be symbolic of your relationship. Oh, wow. Whether it's the dog you currently have, a dog you used to have, or a dog that doesn't actually exist. Just a dream dog.
Starting point is 00:23:45 Yeah. Because what are dogs known for? Man's best friend. Oh, right. Yeah. Loyalty. Yeah. Companionship. So is that a situation where like it's a good dream about a dog? So you're like, okay, my relationship is maybe not so bad. Yeah. If the dog is attacking you. If the dog is sick. Red flag. Oh. Okay. Wow. And is it true that some people are clairvoyant in their dreams? Yeah. Because I've even experienced, like, I'll have a dream. And it's nothing big. I'm not like seeing someone get into an accident or, you know, it's like always something really small. But it's almost like deja vu where then let's say in two months all of a sudden I'm like, wait, I've been here before, but I feel like I had a dream about it.
Starting point is 00:24:28 Yes. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Deja vu is connected to something you previously dream. Now, a lot of people, once they are having that deja vu experience, oh, I've been here before. I know what you're going to say. Well, suddenly it will click for them. Oh, wait, I dreamed this. Yes. So that's possible. Yes. Yeah. I had one recently that involved Chloe Carter. Ashian. Oh, didn't you go on her podcast? I did. Yeah. Oh, that's funny. Yes.
Starting point is 00:24:56 Like you saw that you were going to go on the podcast before or something random. What happened was, this would be more like a pre-cognitive dream where you have a dream and then it happens within days. Okay. After you dreamt it. Yes. But the deja vu, I had the deja vu that was like, wait, I dream this. So I'll try to make this quick. So I had created a mermaid, a portrait of Chloe as a mermaid to give her as a thing.
Starting point is 00:25:20 a gift. And in my dream, I'm walking around carrying the portrait in some kind of Vegas, you know, like a casino or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I noticed that I accidentally ripped the portrait just above the head. I was like, oh, shoot. And I happened to find my framer there. I said, hey, can you fix this for me? And then I woke up. I didn't think a whole lot of it. I thought, well, maybe it has to do. I'm like trying to figure out how to wear my hair different. Right. Okay. So three days. later, I get an email from my framer who said, I am so sorry to tell you this, but your mermaid portrait arrived damage. And they sent a picture and it was ripped. No way. Not ripped. It was creased.
Starting point is 00:26:03 Exactly where I dreamt. It was damaged. But I didn't get it until I started typing, shoot, can you fix this for me? And I was like, wait, I dreamed this. That is, yeah, I think that's so cool. Isn't it? I really love that stuff. But are, and some people I think they really are kind of psychic in their dreams. Like, Can they see like an accident that's going to happen or like someone getting sick? Yes. Yes. This can happen. And people tell me about it all the time.
Starting point is 00:26:28 Yeah. And I've had maybe three experiences like that in my entire life, but some people get it a lot more than others. So the reason why. And I will try to articulate this as best I can because it's really deep. So have you heard of the block time theory? it's also known as eternalism. No, but I mean, I think I can kind of pick up what you're saying. Okay.
Starting point is 00:26:54 So it's connected to the theory of relativity. It is an Einstein theory. Okay. That time exists, all of time, past, present, future all exist right now. Yes. Okay. Yes. But we're only able to perceive it one moment at a time while we're in this body,
Starting point is 00:27:13 because the body actually limits the consciousness. So when we go to sleep and we dream, were able to access other times because consciousness is eternal, as we believe or theorize. And everything that exists exists in frequencies or waves. And right now. And right now is a frequency. Yeah. And the brain, the brain waves work in frequencies.
Starting point is 00:27:42 And each stage of sleep is a lower frequency than the previous one. So R.M. Dream Sleep could very well be the perfect frequency that allows us to tune in and see other time moments. Yeah. And also allows us to receive the consciousness of those that have passed on that we love. Yeah, right, right. And also to access that what we call the collective unconscious where all these amazing ideas exist. Yeah. Inventions that haven't been invented yet. Right. Ideas that haven't happened yet. So dreaming is so cool because it's very practical, but it's also enormously cosmic and spiritual.
Starting point is 00:28:28 It's very spiritual. Yes. Yes. That's what I love so much about it. I just think it's so cool. So what about, let's say someone has a big career decision, you know? Yes. What could that look like in their dreams? So one thing you want to do, as I have preached thus far, you know, keep your day journal with your dream journal and then write out at night before you go to bed what you want your dreams to help you with. You know, should I take this job or should I fire this employee? You know, whatever your big decision is. Ask a question. Yes. Ask the question and your subconscious will get to work on it for you. So the way you can find.
Starting point is 00:29:11 find clues about what the answer for you is in your dream are a couple things. How did you feel in the dream? Like what was your main emotion that you felt in the dream? Was it frustration? Okay. Then what is going on right now in this decision you need to make that is the most frustrating? What were you thinking to yourself in the dream? This is one of the most important things that you want to pay attention to when you're trying to figure out your dream. Is what is your thought process? Because your dream thoughts are the most important thoughts of all because they're your wise, brutally honest thoughts. And they will apply whatever you think to yourself in the dream will apply to something right now in your real life. So what was your thought in the dream?
Starting point is 00:29:56 What if you don't know? That's okay. There's other elements to the dream that will help. So if you do remember what your dream thought was, like for example, I was working with a client and she was in this tunnel and she was trying to climb out of this pit in the tunnel. And her thought was, I don't know how I'm going to get out of here. And I said, okay, does that same thought apply to anything in your real life? And she was like, a relationship. Yeah, go figure. So your dream thoughts are going to really resonate when you're able to make the connection.
Starting point is 00:30:32 And also, how did you feel when you woke up from the dream? Yeah. So not just while you're in the dream. Yeah. When you woke up. Did you wake up with clarity? Did you wake up angry? That will be connected to the decision you're trying to make.
Starting point is 00:30:46 Wow. What if you have a dream about being pregnant? Okay. Does that always mean you're going to have a baby? No. Okay. Because I feel like I've had one of those and I'm like, no, I am not having a fourth kid. Thank you very much.
Starting point is 00:30:59 Okay. If you get that dream and that is not within the realm of possibility or anything you even want to Although you don't want to go down. Remember dreams are symbolic. Okay, right. So for you, the pregnancy dream may have to do with a new project or idea. You're trying to give birth to. That makes sense.
Starting point is 00:31:18 Because you gestate it. Yeah. You labor over it. Yep. You bring it into the world. Yeah, right, right. Just like a baby. All right.
Starting point is 00:31:27 So we don't have to get scared that we're going to be pregnant. And so where you are in the pregnancy and the dream will reflect where you are in this project or idea. Cool. Okay. And sometimes I could just be as simple as like an acknowledgement to it, right? It's not almost like, like me having a dream that I'm like six months pregnant, let's say. It's not like I have to do anything with that information, right? It's just like that's what I'm going through in my life at the time is bringing a new project to life. Yes. But also pay attention to the details, if you can remember them, that happened in the dream because
Starting point is 00:31:55 nothing in a dream is random. Every single piece of the dream is there for a reason. And it's a piece of the puzzle. It's a piece of the message. even down to like what you're wearing, what you're drinking, what is said. Whoa. If you notice a plant in the corner, that's going to represent growth. You know, everything, nothing is random ever, ever, ever. Oh, my God, I really hope I can start remembering my dreams. I think this is so cool. What about when you dream about someone specifically?
Starting point is 00:32:23 And I mean, I get my dream information on TikTok. So there's a strong, strong chances is not true. But I've heard that if you dream about someone specifically, it means they were thinking about you before they fell asleep. Right. Is that true? I've seen that. Nah. I mean, the only way you can know is if you like contact them and say, hey, where are you thinking about me? But usually the people that you dream about, especially if it's someone from your past that you haven't seen in a world, they're going to represent a part of yourself. Oh. This is another big tip on how to figure out your dreams. Everything in your dream is a part of you or something that directly affects you. So if you dream of
Starting point is 00:33:03 this person from your past you haven't seen in a while, ask yourself, what comes to mind when you think of them? How would you describe them? Okay. And then whatever comes to mind, then apply it to yourself. Is there a part of you that's like this? Or is there someone around you right now that reminds you of this? So that person just symbolizes. They're just the face of something current going on right now that reminds you of them. Got it. Right. So it has nothing to do with the other person. Rarely. Well, that makes sense. Yeah. Right. It's your dream. It's about you and what's going on in your head. Oh, it's so cool. So same thing. If you're dreaming about the same person over and over, again, it has nothing to do with that person. It's maybe about your relationship with
Starting point is 00:33:47 them or trauma that you experienced with them or whatever. Yeah. It's a lot of nuances, you know, in dreams. So it depends on who the person is when they were in your life, what you feel about them, you know, because very often the people from our past become the face of something. Like, for example, if you were to dream of your first love. Yeah. And it's probably been decades since they were in your life. It's not about them. It's about what they represent, you know, excitement, passion, someone desiring you. Yeah. That feeling of always wanting to be together. Yeah. So they're the face of that feeling. From now on forever in your dreams, that person will represents that feeling. Yeah. Okay. Is there a way where I know we were just talking about
Starting point is 00:34:37 asking, you know, you're subconscious for a specific question. Is it one of those things where I could be like, okay, when am I going to meet my soulmate? Like, show me dreams or you can't really do that? I would advise against it. Why? Because dreams can be easily misinterpreted. Okay. If you're not, if you don't understand the method of the madness of how dreams work. Okay. Yeah. You know, so I wouldn't do that. I would rather, I would strongly advise to use your dreams as to help you make decisions. Yeah. And to better understand where you're at in your life and, you know, how you're doing as a check on your, your peace of mind, your mental state.
Starting point is 00:35:18 Yeah. You know. Okay. Fair. That's fair. It's that time. Let's talk about Primal Kitchen. Football season is upon us.
Starting point is 00:35:32 and I cannot wait to start hosting watch parties on Sundays. I get so excited for football season because it's nostalgic for me. Well, that's why Haya is so great and it is part of our daily routine as a parent because it's quick, easy, and it pairs great with breakfast or in the car on the ride to school and helps me brace for the onslaught of sick season. It's a non-habit forming chewable with eletheanine B6, Gaba and chamomeneal flour extract plus magnesium and calcium. So that helps kids relax before bed so they can wake up rejuvenated and refresh. What about nightmares? I know you talked about them a little bit earlier, but so why do we experience Nightmares. Okay. So we get nightmares. They begin around the age of three. Yeah. So when we first start getting into. Poor kid. Like, why do kids have so many nightmares? Well, they're starting to regulate negative and
Starting point is 00:39:47 difficult things in their life. Okay. So they're good for you. They're good for the child. They're good for you whenever you have a nightmare, unless they're chronic. Yeah. Then you really need to look into that maybe. Yeah. Okay. You need to go see a doctor about that. It could be, It could be a sleep disorder. Oh. It could be medication you're on that's causing it. Yeah. But typically when you get a nightmare, they are not fun.
Starting point is 00:40:11 They're a horrible experience, but they're good for you because they're shining a light on a difficult situation in your life that your subconscious wants you to fix. Oh, wow. So it's the way your subconscious is slapping you in the face and saying, Kristen, enough, we have got to correct this issue. Whoa. What does it mean if like, I think I had this a few months ago. Was it, I think there was like someone breaking into my house or something. What does that mean? Okay.
Starting point is 00:40:39 Okay. So, so your house in your dream, remember, it's not necessarily going to be your house. Right. It's going to represent you. Oh. Your state of mind, your life, your world. Yep. Okay.
Starting point is 00:40:52 So if someone's breaking into your house, ask yourself at the time of that dream, how is I feeling invaded? How was my peace of mind? You know, what was breaking into my normal routine or my normal peaceful thoughts? Okay. What or who is the intruder in real life? So your subconscious is showing this to you in the form of an intrusion. Got it.
Starting point is 00:41:17 So you can better understand, okay, this person or this thing, this situation that is broken into my life, I need to get it out. Yeah, yeah. I rebuke you. Yeah. Well, and luckily I only had that dream once. So clearly I got rid of that person. Good.
Starting point is 00:41:30 A thing, person, whatever it was. Okay, but wait. So keep going on the nightmares, though. And so it really is just a way for our subconscious to almost like wake us up. Yeah, it is the way the subconscious screams at us. Yeah, screams at us. You have to pay attention to this issue. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:46 It has become too difficult. We have to fix it. We are ringing the alarm. Yeah. So if you get the nightmare, ask yourself, what's the most difficult thing in my life right now? Now, sometimes it can be connected to something from the past that was never, processed in a healthy manner that is still affecting you today. Yep.
Starting point is 00:42:03 You know, whether it was abuse, whether it was trauma, whatever it was, it will show up when different situations happen in real life that kind of feel the same. Yeah. Okay. And then the nightmare saying, we have to fix this. Yep. So you get the nightmare. There's something you need to fix.
Starting point is 00:42:23 And for kids, it really is when they're little. It's just learning how to regulate their emotions. Yeah, they're learning how to deal with negativity, letdowns. They're getting picked on. That's so sad. The gold fish dies, you know. Right away, boom, we're going to throw shit. But here's what you can do to help them. Yeah. Okay. So the younger, the really young ones, like six and under, five and under. The first thing you want to do is, you know, it's just a dream. Here, let's flip the pillow over. This is the good dream side. Cute. Something as simple as that. Yeah. But then when they're away, the next day, you do want to talk to him about it and ask him, you know, what happened yesterday that upset you?
Starting point is 00:43:05 And whatever they say, you know, oh, Bobby spilled milk and blamed it on me. You know, it could be something as simple as that. Oh. And, you know, it made them feel bad about themselves. So something happened in their life that made them feel either bad about themselves or like they don't have control over something. Oh, that makes me so sad. So if you can talk to them about it and pinpoint it, then that gives you an issue. to help your child with. Yeah. Right. So it ultimately is, yeah, a good thing. A really good thing. Even my daughter Say there, she just told me recently that she has a reoccurring dream of a man chasing her. Oh. I was like, God, that sounds terrifying. So it's one of those things I just need to talk to her about like what's going on. When did it start, do you know? She said that, I don't think she hasn't anymore. She said when she was little, she used to have that a lot. Okay. Do you know what ages that was? I would say probably like three or
Starting point is 00:43:55 four until probably like seven. Okay. And they stopped since she was seven. I think so. Do you know how frequently she was getting them? No. I mean I can ask her all of these questions. Okay. So she was being chased by a man. By a man. Is there anything else in the dream you remember? No. I mean, she only told me this because I told her that you were coming on the podcast. I told all my kids, my kids were like, oh my gosh, cool. But so then of course it made her, it prompted her to tell me about those, that scary dream that she used to have. Because I told them I was going to ask, about nightmares. Okay. So if she was getting chased frequently at that age, she may have got that dream when there is something difficult going on in her life that she was avoiding rather than,
Starting point is 00:44:39 you know, facing it head on and handling it. Okay, right. Which could have been my divorce, honestly. Oh. Now that I think about it, the age on that. Oh, no, that was six years ago. Well, yeah. That would be around. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So maybe. And going between houses and stuff, maybe. Yeah, and maybe she wanted to talk to you and she was avoiding talking to you because she didn't know how or maybe she was having scary thoughts about the future. Oh, that makes me so sad. You talk to her about it. Yeah, now. Yeah, better late than never.
Starting point is 00:45:11 That'd be interesting to find out. Okay, yeah, I'm going to dig around. Because the chasing dream as a child, even as an adult, is usually connected to one or two things. You're avoiding dealing with something because you just don't want to or you. don't know how. Or there's something going on. You're trying to distance yourself from. Oh, interesting.
Starting point is 00:45:32 Okay, I'm going to dig around with her more on that and just, yeah, kind of pick her brain. Is there a way that you can stop reoccurring dreams or nightmares? Yeah, is to figure out what's causing it and then take care of it. Okay. But sometimes you don't want to because you can get recurring dreams that are connected to good things. Right. True. Yeah, like sometimes I'll get a recurring dream where I'm in this.
Starting point is 00:45:55 high school for the gifted and it's very, very crowded and I'm trying to find my room. Oh, wow. And so I get that dream whenever I'm working on a big creative project. And so it's not a dream I want to get rid of because I know, okay, the stakes are high with this. So I need to find, because I'm searching in the dreams, so I need to find the right way to present or create this big project. Oh, wow. Right. So it is. It can be guidance. Yes. Yes. A nice little reminder. Yes. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Okay. And with that, too, do we have any sort of control over our dreams or not really? So do you mean control, like when you're in the dream and then you can take control of them? Yeah. We can. We can.
Starting point is 00:46:37 Yeah. Now, would it be terribly rude if I just... No, I want you to be comfortable. Get comfortable. Don't want to put my shoes on your sofa. Isn't that like the movie? Was it Inception, right? Yes. What did you think of that? I thought it was very interesting. Did you think it was spot on or no? Were you like, there's a lot of meatballs?
Starting point is 00:46:55 Like, can you actually, you're saying you can, in fact. Yes. Okay. So it's called lucid dreaming when you are in the dream and you have the awareness that it is a dream. Yes. And a lot of people become lucid in the midst of a nightmare. Oh. They, you know, there's an axe murderer just about to bring the hammer down and they're like, oh, I got to get out of here.
Starting point is 00:47:18 And so they use the lucidity to wake up and get out of the nightmare. Yes. Which is the wrong thing to do. Really? You want to stay in the nightmare. What if you get killed? Well, remember it's a dream. So once you realize it's a dream, even if it's a horribly frightening dream, take control.
Starting point is 00:47:35 Okay. Because it's your creation. Right. Your brain made this up. Right. So you can take control of it and change it. That is so cool. So, okay.
Starting point is 00:47:46 So what I tell people to do, I mean, you can certainly have fun and do anything you want in a lucid dream. But make sure at some point in the dream, especially. if it's a nightmare. Ask questions. Ask the ax murder. Wait a minute. Who are you? What are you trying to tell me? And you will get an answer. Really? Yes. You will get an answer. Wait, that is so cool. Because when you're in a lucid dream, when you know it's a dream, it is the coolest state of being that there is because you're awake and you're asleep at the same time. Yeah. And you're in your conscious mind and your subconscious mind at the exact same time. So you can have a conversation with your subconscious while you're conscious. That is awesome. And you can say,
Starting point is 00:48:31 why are you trying to tell me? Who are you? You'll get an answer. You'll always get an answer. You'll always get an answer. Oh my gosh. I want to have a lucid dream now. That is so cool. Oh, I love it. And you coach people, right? Like, you've got regular clients that like they, I'm sure they always want to know. And then they become pretty good at probably. putting their dreams together, I would imagine. They do. They still come to me because it's kind of hard to see the box when you're inside the box. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:49:00 So have a professional outside perspective walk you through it. I'll help you see things that maybe you didn't quite see. And can you like help coach a lucid dream? Like is there a way you can like get better at this kind of stuff or no? Yeah. Okay. So here's a quick way to lucid dream. You know, there's all the.
Starting point is 00:49:21 techniques that can take a really long time for it to finally work. So there's two things that'll get you there quicker. One is when you start doing something that really involves mind and body together, like yoga or karate, where you're focusing on the physical as well as the mental has to be, you know, on par with the physical. So that that'll get you to lucid dream quicker. Cool. First time I ever lose a dream was after I started taking taekwondo. Oh, wow. Yeah. And then the other thing that will get you there quicker is if you wake up to an alarm you want to set your alarm about 20 to 30 minutes earlier than normal and when the alarm goes off hit your snooze and give yourself 20 to 30 minutes before it goes off again and so that's enough window of time that will allow you to drift back into sleep but not a long enough time to go into the deep delta because the deep delta can erase things okay okay so it'll you'll stay in the lighter stages of sleep and dreaming is a lighter stage. So you're more likely to get back into the dream state. But still, since you woke up and it's close to morning, you're going to have
Starting point is 00:50:31 enough consciousness that you're holding on to still. So you can be aware, oh, okay, I'm in a dream now. What shall I do? Oh my gosh. Fun. Yes. And you can do anything. Oh, my God. You can make your favorite celebrity appear before you. You can travel in time. You can fly. I like to walk through walls. Oh my gosh. Wait, this is so cool. I know. This is my new goal now to start having lucid dreams. What's a dream that you've heard the most in your career? And what does it mean? The one I've heard the most. Well, the teeth falling out. The X. Oh, okay. Dirty bathrooms. Oh. Like the toilet. You can't use the toilet. Oh. Because it's disgusting or it's clogged or there's no stalls in everyone can see you. Have you ever had? No, and I've never heard of anyone having this dream.
Starting point is 00:51:24 Oh, okay. That's interesting. So the toilet is your psychological plumbing. It is your ability to flush away and get rid of that which does not serve you or that which is upsetting or frustrating you. Whoa. So if the toilet is clogged, that is a snapshot of what your psyche looks like. It's clogged up because you're holding it in. You're not finding a good release for. it. Cool. So that's really common. It's really common, especially for women. Oh, interesting. So with that, it's just, again, a reminder of like, we got to get our shit together. We got to get our shit out. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, quite literally. What about the other dream is when, I think you're like half asleep, but when you fall and you like jerk yourself awake, what does that mean?
Starting point is 00:52:14 Okay, so that's called the hypnotic jerk. Oh. And so that's not necessarily. a psychological thing to explore. It's more physiological thing that happens usually on the onset of sleep. Where, you know, we call it falling asleep because it can feel like falling when you lose control of your muscles. Because falling asleep is actually a very complicated process. There's a lot of things going on in your brain and in your body that allow you to fall asleep. Right. So as you're drifting off and you start to lose muscle control, it can feel like falling.
Starting point is 00:52:49 And then if you're having, if you go to bed too late or you're having a fitful night of sleep or your sleep routine is just off, you can get the hypnot jerk more often than not. And you'll start to have that drifting off and the feeling of my muscles relaxing. Oh my God, I'm falling weight. Yeah. Okay. So it's like it just is what it is. It's just a, yeah. And they call it the hypnotic jerk because, you know, you jerk yourself awake and you're in the hypnics state, the hypnagogic state, the in between.
Starting point is 00:53:19 awake in a sleep state of consciousness. Okay, so we don't need to like delve into that. But it is interesting because I feel like most people have experienced that too. Yes, I think everyone has. Yeah. Okay. So tell me about your app. Okay.
Starting point is 00:53:30 And then where people can also book appointments with you and like what that looks like. Okay. So my app is called Dream Chat with Laurie. L-A-U-R-I, Dream Chat with Laurie. It's available on Google Play and in the Apple App Store. And I trained it. Now, there's a lot of Dream apps out there. This is the only one that was actually designed
Starting point is 00:53:51 an actual authentic dream analyst. No way. That should be illegal that people are out there doing that. I know. So this is my work. And a lot of the dream apps out there and chat GPT scrape from my work. Oh, I'm sure.
Starting point is 00:54:07 Yeah. So this is me. And it's my methods. I built it. And it's a conversation. So I'm not just telling you what it means. We talk back and forth. It's like the best thing to having me
Starting point is 00:54:19 sitting there on your bed with you going through your dream. And it also has, like I mentioned, a day journal in it, which I strongly advise you, you use it at night. It's just five questions that I ask you about your day. What was on your mind the most today? What was your focus? What sort of conversations, emails or text did you have today? What happened today that was bad or negative? Where you feel bad about? Just five questions like that. So in the morning, when you put your dream in, it will pull from that. And you'll get a much more accurate analysis. And then at the end of the session, you get dream wisdom. So it takes everything from your dream and gives you a piece of wisdom that your subconscious
Starting point is 00:54:58 was giving you for you to take with you for the day. But wait, there's more. Cool. After that, you get a snapshot of your dream. You get dream art. And there's two ways you get to choose which way you want your art. POV, where you see your dream from your point of view, or you can see yourself in the dream. So you upload a selfie and then it puts you in the dream. Oh my gosh. I'm going to download this app. This
Starting point is 00:55:24 sounds awesome. And then you can share it on social media. There you go. I'll say, look what I dreamed last night. Oh my gosh. This is so cool. I'm so proud of it. Yeah, you should be. And then so also on your website, right, people can book just appointments with you or is it through the app as well. Yes. My website is Laurie Lowenberg.com, but Laurie Lowenberg is hard to spell and hard to remember. So instead of putting in Laurie Lowenberg.com, just Google Dream Expert. Oh, and you'll pop around. And I'm like the first three that come up. Amazing. And so that's where you can set up a private session with me. Cool. Okay. Lori, you're amazing. This was such a fun conversation. Thank you so much for being here. Thanks for having me. You ask a wonderful question. Oh, well, thank you. Oh, my gosh. So fun.
