Let's Find Out - Astronomers sent a "CHEERS!" to aliens in 1983 (and other SETI messages to extraterrestrials) | ASMR
Episode Date: August 28, 2023In 1983, two Japanese scientists, Masaki Morimoto and Hisashi Hirabayashi, pioneers in the field of radioastronomy and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), got inebriated as they celeb...rated the Tanabata star festival. They decided to use a radio telescope at Stanford to send a message to one of the brightest stars in the sky, Altair. In the message was information about our planet, our evolution, the human species, and even a high-spirited sign-off, sending both the English word "TOAST" and the Japanese equivalent, "KANPAI" (乾杯). And I love the playful sentiment. 40 years later, their scientific progeny are listening for a response. Spoiler alert. We haven't heard back... yet. But we also explore the nature of these and other messages to possible intelligent alien life out there listening like we are. We touch upon SETI, the Arecibo message, and a few other attempts at establishing a first contact with an extraterrestrial alien species. So I stumbled upon this article today that said that we might be receiving messages from aliens today.
A message emitted 40 years ago.
Would have had enough time to make the return trip been received, digested, decoded,
and emitted a response emitted back to us in the intervening time
because it was to the Star Altair, which is the 12th brightest,
star in the sky and it's really close in a galaxy that's possibly two two hundred
thousand I was gonna say maybe 300,000 light years across 16.7 light years is
practically next door so that means that August 22nd 2023 which I probably
probably won't even edit this video in time to get out today but might be the
day that we make first contact with aliens
But you know, I don't want to keep you guys waiting till the end of the video. So I'll just tell you up front there is a very small
chance that we're gonna even not even today, but at any point receive a return response from this message
because the star is relatively young and it's a bright. It seems to be a very much larger star, but it seems to be a pretty active star too.
and you need a old star to be able to allow and it needs to be stable to be able to allow the developing evolving life to not fry
every time you have a solar outburst of cosmic rays and what is it called coronal mass ejections
to blow off and zap you with radiation from the star the
Oh, the second point was that the message apparently here, I'll show you guys, says the word toast at the end of it.
So it has a lot of these characters, and these were, and has the word toast at the end of it, just to get to the point rich,
because they were apparently drunk or, you know, getting a little toasty when these scientists back in 1983 decided to send this message.
and they actually included the Japanese word, which is Ken-Kin-Pai.
I'll correct myself in the minute, I'm sure, which means cheers.
English is to toast, physical clink.
Insert Austin Powers meme there.
And they did it in ingest, obviously in earnest, partly too,
but also I like this aspect that the one of the authors, who,
unfortunately passed away in 2010 in the spirit of inspiring the youth so it was written by
morimoto and hirabayashi morimoto said that we will cut this part out okay i found it was on a different
article morimoto described as an inspiration for the younger generations entering the newly
born radio astronomy community in japan back in nineteen eighteen
Oh, he himself was an inspiration.
Okay.
I took it as a quote of him talking about his message here.
But I wanted to talk about this
because it's a good jumping off point
for explaining the general thinking behind messages,
how to send them in what form, what we expect,
where to send them,
what to send
what is the content
that's relatable
between humans and aliens
and in a big way
I think I read a
no I didn't read
I listened to a podcast
most scientists

of scientists were inspired to get into science
through science fiction
and that's
The reason I was inspired to start my channel to really just had an interest in science in general was through books, articles, in television, and movies talking about science fiction, futurism, technology, exotic features of the universe.

among a lot of science fiction
some of it's horror and tragedy
but a lot of it is especially Arthur C. Clark
he in rendezvous with Rama

you're really similar to the Amuamua asteroid interstellar object
being a long cylindrical shape that was sent
flew by the earth to see
kind of test where the human's technological capabilities were
but it was ultimately a I guess a comedy in the traditional sense
of just being a happy ending
and to me that's always and still does inspire me and interstellar is a huge inspiration all of
Carl Sagan's work yeah I guess that's a long tangent just to say that science fiction is
really inspiring and so I love speculating and I love reading about the intelligent speculation
from actual scientists who know the science and technology and are really good at the math
to be able to
They're very immersed in the
The environment of
Technology and science and knowledge gathering to the point where they can
They are the most credible authorities on making on speculating
the likelihood of our ever coming in contact with aliens how we would do so
Where we would do so
where and then where our technologies might lead in the future.
Even if we don't ever come in contact with aliens,
we eventually will become interstellar species, space-faring individuals.
All of that just fascinates me.
And this was a great jumping off point because the likelihood of interacting with aliens,
I think, is other than a global religious experience,
I mean, in a way you can argue it is.
It's like a global Armageddon apocalypse if they're negative aliens.
But it could be a positive, optimistic ending of our isolated history,
our pre-contact civilization.
And to me, that's just really exciting to think about.
So is the toast, the likelihood of it actually being...
Oh, and then the third thing up front that I sort of know, we're getting into the meat of the video,
so I'm not quite up front here at this point, but is the, why are we choosing today, April 22nd?
Because there was an article written in 2008 that said 2015 might be the earliest receipt,
which would be 30, who was it, 83, 30?
years.
So late 2015, early
2016 for a
star, Altair being
16.7 light years distant.
But
regardless, the
message itself was sent
from back in 1983.
And so I think the
probably the last
sensational
bit of information
that I could clear up for you guys if you're just
trying to click and move on or

say thanks grant Thomas Taylor Leanne Leah J.M those are initials and Benton thank you guys so much so this this message was sent out in 1983 a round trip if they were immediately you know within a couple weeks or months of receiving it if they were able to again decode it and they want to
to send us back a message. It would have been about 32 to 34 years, which would have been about
in 2015, 2016. But they think the extra seven, six, seven years is because the, so Altair is a
symbolic star to the Japanese. The stargazers decided that August 22nd, when the July 7th Tanabata
Star Festival featuring celestial lovers.
Altair and Vega falls on the lunar calendar was a good time as any to be on standby for a message from out there and
Before we get into the meat of what the message and the drawings are, which is cool. I and then I want to jump
Jump off to the Eurcebo message and we can talk about other things, but I wanted to explain the actual dates in Tanabata. Here we go
Japanese pray that a cowherd and a weaver,
lovers separated in mythology by the Milky Way,
can meet at least once a year on July 7th.
The cowherd is represented by Altair in the constellation Achila
while a weaver is identified as Vega in the constellation Lyra.
Tanabata falls August 22nd on the lunar calendar this year,
and in 1983 when the hello is anybody there signal was beamed into the heavens it fell on August 15th
this is the point where I should go into the body of the message now and speaking of body
so check check out the image of the family here I thought this was really funny and the astronomer the
they were just laughing about how, you know, the message could be mistranslated because they are,
there are, you know, there are symbols and there are actual words, abstract words, and,
and, well, let's get it right.
Because there are images, basically, if you know how to decode the message, which,
which apparently with the Erecibo message, the famous one that looks like,
this one right here that it has so much information in it and at such a low resolution the whole thing is only
1600 barely not even 1700 bits long so it's not even two kilobytes kilobits i was reading that
the ericebo message was really you know it's very unlikely that i think what it was
was it the team gave the message in its,
in its, you know, not encrypted, but coded form.
It's not decoded.
So they literally sent the strings of bits that they beamed out in space
through radio waves to three really, you know, top, top minds,
three scientists.
And only one of them was able to figure out that it was even in binary,
but they couldn't even decode it once they understood that aspect of it.
So that was really interesting that, you know,
there might be a likelihood that they wouldn't even be able to decode the message.
But, you know, if we were to get a message,
it all depends on your level of motivation, I guess.
If we thought we got a message from aliens, you bet your butt.
We would be putting enough people on it until we decoded and were able to translate an intelligible message, you know, out of it.
But so the two guys who wrote it, 1983, radio astronomy is young, especially in Japan.

and just generally are able to permeate through matter and gas and dust and what have you

outshine all other sources in the solar system the waves from our broadcasts leak
outwards in spherical shell and these could potentially be found by distant detectors
since they travel at the fastest possible speed and speed of light takes my
much less time I guess we would leak out radio waves okay I'm sure there's a an obvious other
benefit that I'm not seeing right now but um this message circling back is very extemporaneous of me was so it was sent out from Stanford actually
It's developed by the astronomers.

to Japanese astronomers.
So they were using the Stanford University telescope while drunk, they said.
And, yeah, so there was a bit of cheek, the message.
But I love the playful nature.
of it it's the reason I want to talk about avi loebbs a Galileo project where he's literally
combing the bottom of the ocean to look for a meteor that apparently was traveling so fast
that it had to have been interstellar and so he's gonna see if there's you know any evidence that
there's it was artificially made or manipulated in any way but um i like him he's the i think the chair
of the Harvard Astronomy Department.
So he's very accredited.
He's very legitimate.
But he has the curiosity of a child,
the intelligence of an absolute genius,
but he, I guess, as a virtue,
he's able to maintain his childlike wonder.
And the open-mindedness that goes along with that.
He's not he's not refuting completely going head over heels in gullibility and making any sort of defined definite statement for or against all this alien UFO talk.
He simply wants to gather data and use data to make a conclusion.
He's not above speculating, but he's above.
You know, a declarative statement for or against from a position of authority before he has enough data, which I really like.
And that's just why I appreciate that there is a bit of cheekiness, tongue and cheek and playfulness to this message.
So, you know, the star is young and there might not be a lot of, there might not even be, you know, viable planets around there.
but he says they did it because it was good enough quote it was good enough and he's glad about it especially after all the messages he got from school children everywhere
quote children's response is the best thing in quote so hirabayashi and morimoto sent the email back in 1983
but it was lost for apparently decades and has just been rediscovered by the latter

So again, in the spirit of play,
they came up with it while drinking,
and they thought it would be cool.
They thought it would be a great idea
to, you know, have some fun with it.
Which is, so it's a lot more playful,
a lot less formal, I guess,
than the more sober message, so to speak,
of, well, any other,
almost any other of these sent messages
because there are some other playful ones
or at least more artistic messages out there
that maybe I'll touch upon in a little bit here

So they're used from Stanford,
they use the Stanford Telescope Radio Telescope
to transmit it in August 15th, 1983,
as part of a space team-themed project
commemorating the 15th anniversary
of the weekly comic anthology Shonen Jump.
Interesting.
On scientific, Morimoto was a Japanese pioneer
in the field of SETI, search for extraterrestrial,
intelligence and worked at the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory of the University of Tokyo,
now part of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan.
And yeah, there's so many exoplanets that have been discovered since the late 90s when Hubble
and other missions set out to really canvas the nearby galaxy or nearby
neighborhood of stars for exoplanets and it's like we're in the thousands now started out just a few dozen
now we're able to and we're able to just to look at hot jupiter's the biggest brightest most reflective
most gravitationally tugging you know impactful planets on their stars could notice their stars
wobble but now we've had actual resolutions of we've been able to resolve the actual pictures
of even if they're only a couple pixels wide of actual exoplanets so they don't think that
alter because it's so close they've been able to kind of look towards it that it has exoplanets
or planets around it but um but yeah it is it
It's a pretty close star and so, you know, we could, it makes sense to send the signal to the closest stars to us, just in case they have life.
Because we're likely to get a response, a fairly prompt response in galactic or cosmic terms.
Analysis.

Well, still, this is pretty cool to be a consolidation of all the different messages sent.
I, you know, we can look at it real quick, but you know, maybe we'll, uh, because I already would have shown you guys the messages here.
We can look at these after we break down what the Erecibo message is and, uh,
you know maybe we're can have a better context it's
i guess it's essentially i was just curious what the smallest scales were whether they
were atoms maybe their atoms molecules then you know biochemistry biochemical
dna and whatnot is that is in like a g a t like those are the actual uh uh
DNA molecules so they're do they have Japanese letters did they send the message in
Japanese and English that would be confusing but nonetheless they have clearly
that's DNA unicellular multicellular organisms fish and then the fish creeping
out of the water which I would be curious to know
like how it would interpret this how we get it without the dang by save it
because it does you know it seems obvious to us at least to some extent that this
line here on slide 8 would be the ocean the like a water a what do you call it you
know a boundary between phases or you know gas and liquid or at least later
of maybe a different chemical composition.
So it could be going out of a really thick gas into a lighter gas.
I'm just wondering how it could be interpreted here.

The evolution on life on Earth is fish,
and then they grow limbs and they structures
and they go from reptiles to apes.
This is really to humans.
And then a close-up of the human waving is five digits.
it's really the most concise you know in 12 slides it's the entire humanity and
and then they vary in there I'd be curious to know what that slide 13 is right there

I guess it looks like the radio dish with the antenna it's sending the signal
and okay so I guess that's what that is maybe in a way it's like the antenna is when you cheers someone
they figured we'll show them the antenna and that's like holding up the antenna instead of the glass
of alcohol the beer the whiskey uh so that was 83 and like anything it's it's cool to look at the history
in the historical context it sits within they were obviously inspired by
you know the desire to search or reach out to aliens which itself is a is debated in the community i think
even as recent as 2015 and it makes sense i think at the bottom here it's going to say the erasibo
Wikipedia um they were there's people uh saying hey it might not be a good idea to reach out

analogy is if you're
dropped alone
especially at night
basically you know in the most vulnerable
state as possible
in the forest no weapons
and we would be
prey we would be easy prey to any
any civilization
that was advanced enough to have interstellar
travel their technology would be
so beyond us it would
you know it would make us it would be sure
and fish in a barrel.

Earth would be the barrel,
or the local,
the local spacetime well surrounding
that Earth sits within would be the barrel maybe.

scientists saying that, no, it's not a good idea
to just shout out into the void
and let everybody know exactly where you are
and what level of technology
you have.
because that might be saying hey we're primitive monkeys with sticks come have your way with us uh it's not necessarily

One result was a statement not signed by Frank Drake though, so maybe he's more optimistic about the intentions of aliens that a worldwide scientific political and humanitarian discussion must first occur before any message should be broadcast out into the unknown, into the abyss.

the Fermi paradox, why we haven't heard from them yet or detected them yet,
or been able to detect them if they're purposely trying to conceal themselves,
what influences they might have impressed, imposed upon us already,
that we're not aware of, or, you know, what other motives or methods of interacting with us
would a few people at the heads of government or elsewhere be currently contacted and aware
and just haven't told the rest of the world.

Even if the aliens themselves aren't malicious,
the transmission of knowledge,
advanced knowledge to anyone in particular
might be used by that human.

maybe just selfish reasons that gets out of control
if it gets in the wrong hands, you know?

But there's a list here of so I wanted to talk about this message was the series of brief

Then the cosmic call in 1999.

Yeah, and then actually increasingly more and more and more since then.
Wow signal replied to that at least.
But I just wanted to outline that there exists serious attempts that communicate.
So I guess we'll go. The Morse message was a series of brief radio messages in Morse code
transmitted to the, directed to the flame. There's an intelligent life on Venus. First radio
broadcast intended for extraterrestrial civilizations in the history of mankind. Four minutes later,
signals are also currently in transit to the star HD 13133.6. What's that?
So the constellation, the famous star Gleese 581, the light years away.
So that's interesting.
So in 2000, it would have been able to make the round trip a message from her.
It was originally sent in 1960.
Or do they mean they used it?
They used the same.
Is there a source for that?
No.
They just said Glees is also located in Libra.
So, okay, I guess they just sent it to a different star in the same constellation.
All right, so that was the first in 62, and then the Erocebo is one of the most famous from 1974,
and it's an interstellar radio message carrying basic information about humanity and earth.
And again, I want to do a whole video on this, because it's really cool, the message itself and the motivation and, you know, every, all the context.
But this is just getting our toes wet, getting our feet wet.
dipping our toes in the water.
So it was a demonstration of human technological achievement
rather than a real attempt to enter into a conversation with terrestrials.
It was from the massive Erecebo telescope in Puerto Rico
that actually was destroyed by a hurricane fell into disrepair.
The University of Central Florida from Orlando assumed operation of the facility in 20 years.
Sad but very amazing the world.
watch on this massive thousand feet wide. 7.55 a.m. on December 1st, 2020. Several of the remaining
support cables suffered a critical failure and the support structure antenna and dome assembly
fell into the dish. I think they have. Here's the collapse. This is, wow, man, look at that.
It just free falls and those cables just. I guess they were using a drone to look
and they watched it, they must have heard it, and they were looking at what the sound was, and there you go.
You see it just, as the cable snapped, make up the actual dish itself.
So, a lot of structural integrity, just gave way quite the diversion guys, sorry.
And that's the after, the Erecibo message.
I try to decode, well, I guess there wasn't much more to decode about the, uh, the hero Bayashi,
Morimoto message right? Yeah so Carl Sagan who was designed the message here and was
designed by yeah there's no color information so this is just for the human mind to
help us and I've never been able to understand the binary behind it I've never really
looked too too in depth into it but Carl Sagan and Frank Drake designed it sent it out
25,000 light years from Earth, so it's going to be a little while before we get a return message if we do.
And even then they said that, you know, it's going to be a, one of the aspects of it was the stars
location. They applied the current three-dimensional coordinates of specific types of stars.
I think pulsars in that, you know, pulse regularly so that, you know, pulse regularly so that,
We were anybody receiving the message could triangulate our position relative to the pulsars coordinates and
I don't know did this message have that information. I know the the Voyager record did either way
anything getting a message 25,000 light year or years from now is going to you know the stars will have moved positions since then so the
position that we relayed in the message won't our position won't be accurate but no
anybody smart enough to decode it will probably be able to reverse engineer it
I'm sure the top to the bottom I'll put it up here are the numbers one to ten or
numbers one to ten right to left huh to ten two three four yeah it's left or right
What are they talking about?
The atomic numbers, unless that image is mirrored.
Okay, so then they have the atomic numbers of the elements.
Oh, interesting.
They took our DNA in all the elements, hydrogen, that make it up.
Carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and phosphorus are in purple there.
Those for the chemical compounds are in green that make up the nucleotides of DNA.
so combinations of those atoms the estimated number of DNA nucleotides in the human genome
and a graphic look at the double helix structure of DNA which are white and blue
respectively okay so the center line because it's a weird fusion between symbols and pictures
So it's like those symbols are supposed to represent actual data and the pictures are just more qualitative, you know, pictures, you know, the human body.
It's the general.
I mean, you can literally count the number of pixels there.
What is it like?
3.6, 8, 22.
I mean, there's like 30-ish pixels to make up the human body.
It's pretty low-res dispersed with actual.
symbols representing constant you know very concrete specific things like the numbers
and then the atomic atomic atomic specific arrangements that make up DNA of the
atoms into the chemicals and the chemicals into the DNA deoxy-whatever DNA means
the oxyribinucleic acid the actual form the estimated number in the human
genome physical height of the average man five nine a graphic figure of a human being in red
and the human population of earth which is four billion at the time interesting because you know
again that tells uh any nefarious aliens or belligerent maybe is the right word that uh there's
only four billion of us maybe we should have said four trillion a graphic but then we could
just been a whole planet of ants you know maybe really tiny but I guess when your
technology's big enough it technology out strips the physical size so that's some real
a brain thinking on my part but the graphic of the solar system indicating which of the
planets the message is coming from so it's saying that here's all the planets in a row and
then earth is like boom it's like the one sticking out
And it's the relative mass.
That's our star.
These are the planet.

Our message was 16179 bits or binary digits, approximately 210 bytes, 200 bytes.
transmitted at 2.3 megahertz shifted the frequency by 10 hertz with a power of
450 kilowatts the ones and zeros were transmitted by frequency shifting at the rate of 10
bits per second broadcast was less than three three minutes which is you know it's it's
that's why it's a shot in the dark I mean we didn't sit there and repeat it for any length of time
you would expect to we at least repeat it for an hour, you know,
so that anybody seeing it can hit record,
have time to hit record,
let other people, you know, know, know about it.
I don't know, perhaps catch, if it was halfway through the message,
catch the first half that they didn't record initially.
So, yeah, it's interesting.
So they used the prime numbers, the number of bits.
was because 1679 is a semi-prime, the product of two prime numbers.
To be arranged rectangularly, they would have to know how to arrange it into 73 rows, you know,
length and width by 23 columns.
And it says the alternative arrangement, 23 rows and 73 columns,
produces unintelligible images and sets of characters.
so that's really interesting yeah I'd like to go into that later but um it all boils down to binary
then the cosmic call um so the Erosibo was to the constellation Hercules to m13 the arrival dates
which is pretty cool it's 25 000 26 000 years from now cosmic call is in 2069 2057 in 267 2051
to all these different stars, triple star system, 69 light years away.
That was, all these were made in 2000.
Then the teenage message, its message structure back in 1999,
designed with a noise resistant format,
uh, funded by a Texas-based startup that went out of business four years later, five years later,

The hydrogen and helium atoms are used to introduce mass, so they have length time mass and

telescope is in Ukraine right now and then so it was all the way up to 2003 a
message from Earth in 2008 this is the one that was sent to Gleese was that the
containing 500 messages that were selected through a competition of the social
network site Bebo as of January 25th

called a terminator zone which it's kind of ironic because it's the only instead
of where you would die it's the only possibly habitable part of a tidily locked
planet meaning a planet that like our moon keeps the same side facing this its sun
and tidily locked earth, not the moon, not the sun, but the Terminator zone.
It's only 20 light years away.
Is the where the terminus is, here's the ISS as it approaches the Terminator where light
meets day meets night.
And here it is right there.
Tidily locked planet, they, you know, speculate, which is,
really cool to think about the um there's a whole essay i can probably find it that it would be the only
habitable part of the planet between the extreme hot of the sun facing side and the stream
extreme extreme low temperatures frigid temperatures of the far side of the planet and there might be
you know layers of melting water constantly streaming from one side to the other there might be
You know, so there would be rivers.
It would be the only zone that would be in the habitable temperature zone.
And it's really cool to think about the convection of the air,
going from hot to cold and a more or less pretty likely circular, you know, pattern if it wouldn't be extreme.
Just, man, it just so interesting to think about it.

especially in situations where there is an air of exploration,
and ethos of venturing and courageous venturing you have exploration and searching
you know like Star Trek going into the next frontier what was their phrase
boldly going man or woman or no human has gone before and I live like even with the
moon missions I just learned this the other day there I think
Buzz Aldrin or was it Armstrong I think was Aldrin left a commemorative patch of some sort
Even though it was during the Cold War where we were neck and neck you know in an arms race a nuclear arms race with Russia
American astronauts paid respects by leaving a patch
to the Uriguergen and
I forget the other one but the two
Russian cosmonauts that lost their lives in while testing rockets, you know, to try to
further their missions to space, which I always thought was a beautiful symbol of peace
among, even though the fact that it's almost well known nowadays that the space race was just
essentially a ballistic missile rate competition and we were you know the the Saturn rockets getting us to
the moon putting 17 men on the moon were essentially just an excuse we're a PR front to the moon to
the moon missions were a PR front to just bolster our ballistic missile capability our nuclear
weapon delivery system capabilities so the fact that you have huge
genuine gestures of peace sticking extending the olive branch amid such a terrifying scenario is a beautiful beautiful thing
that shows just like extending our hand out to the cosmos with these messages our desire for
understanding and trying to breach and bridge the gap between
species in this case so we'll touch upon the rest of these very soon but I'm
