Let's Find Out - The Kardashev Scale: The Science of Future Civilizations | ASMR soft-spoken [science fiction, futurism]

Episode Date: December 28, 2018

There's a scale of civilizations regarding how much energy they can harness. The energy of an entire planet? A star? A group of stars? Entire galaxies? Let's find out about the Kardashev scale. Where ...is our civilization heading? Starting point is 00:00:05 Good evening, guys. Check, check, check. So, I pensioned the science fiction tonight. I hope you guys enjoy it too. Fascinated by, to define the reaches its planet from its parent star. So a type 2, which is a galactic civilization, it's where, as you can imagine again, this is a civilization that is so advanced obviously conga break or else it would
Starting point is 00:03:37 medical scale but it's actually mean i read this book years ago by mityo kaku physics of the impossible this scale and it's uh it's just to me it's it's like we um as a as a civilization i was just listening to Terence McKenna earlier today, and for as much radical speculation he does, species say it's irrefutable role that you're going to be a bit player in someone else's story, someone else's trauma, and that goes for our entire human species, in the case that we ever meet another alien race. So the goal for them was just to learn new alien species and interesting objects, really, for that matter,
Starting point is 00:06:58 in the process of exploring. Yet they had the prime directive, which was, am I getting confused, but they had rules that established how to act and what not to do in certain rules and boundaries that specific there. I guess I got a poverty. So once we're there, what do we do with ourselves, you know? If we ever reach an instance such as Star Trek, where nobody necessarily has to have a job in science, and other forms of self-improvement through challenging their skills.
Starting point is 00:09:43 If we ever reached that status astray and as good as the intentions of using it might be, we could cause chaos and, you know, due to irrevocable damage. So I think it's good to have discipline and, uh, a sense of where we're going, and that's what I'm exploring this type of, these ideas, these futuristic ideas in science fiction, ideas of science are always in philosophy, and the first philosophic movements can be found in pure visions of art, whether song or music or of science. we perish or thrive in the type zero civilization or will we advance
Starting point is 00:12:44 and make our way into the stars assert that as a civilization grows larger energy demands will increase rapidly due to its population growth and the energy requirements of its various technological inventions
Starting point is 00:13:07 machines with this in mind the Kardashev scale was developed as a way of measuring measuring a civil civilizations, technological. So, actually designed to be in accordance with the literal numbers after it, orders of magnitude. So 10 with 25 zeros on the end of that. And a type 3 would be yet another 10 orders of magnitude, the scale yet.
Starting point is 00:15:42 Kaku tends to believe that all things taken into consideration, We will actually really reach a type 1 in maybe at most 200 years. So, that's actually realistic. In 15-0-801, efficient with railroads. Yeah, I don't know, to me that's just fascinating that just 200 years ago, we were not using electricity at all. Demonstrations didn't have any combustible engines. Glyss Auto patents a four-stroke internal combustion.
Starting point is 00:19:38 engine. Yeah, nonetheless, I think it's tie this into, we theorize that type 2 might take us a few thousand years. Type 3 might take anywhere from 100,000 to a million years to get those epic scales like the, um, like Dune and uh, what's Isaac Asimov's famous one? Puristic, very advanced. civilizations evolving over Carl Sagan Act logarithmic scale between 0.7. Like actually quite a few really, really quality, elaborate videos with good graphics and all that, explaining this in a more scientific manner. But anywhere from a series of kind of like a fragmented sphere in developing the sun at a distance of 50 to 200 million miles away from the sun,
Starting point is 00:24:07 it would be able to harness observations of that star. The civilization that maybe hasn't reached out to other stars, but yet is advanced enough to build megastructures. The series of constructed objects that are a volume compass, not just the sun's local environment, but a sphere at a radius thousands of times, that of the sun. So it would be like this area, even if it was fragmented, you would have on that, you'd be able to support trillions, trillions and trillions of individuals with that.
Starting point is 00:26:36 So you could imagine that you would have to, you would have to be incredibly advanced to be incredibly advanced to be able to construct something that large. But at the same time, you would have to access to that much energy. I'm a figure before, like, if we were able to harness 100% of the sun's energy that hits just the Earth, which is civilization for a thousand years or something,
Starting point is 00:27:30 not three, because a study of galactic mid-infrared emissions came to the conclusion that the Cardish F-type 3 civilizations are either very rare or do not
Starting point is 00:28:19 exist in the local universe October 14th 2015 the detection of an unusual light curve for star KIC 5-2 civilization all right they were just
Starting point is 00:29:31 sorry anti-climactic but they were just talking about saddietude trying to search for a type 2, an initial radio reconnaissance of that star. However, we're used by fusing approximately 280 grams of hydrogen into helium per second. A rate roughly equivalent to 8.9 to the 10. Consider that. A body of us actually fusing so much hydrogen that we would start using a significant portion we have on our planet, which, of course, at that rate, may be able to pick up.
Starting point is 00:34:22 What we're able to do is harness the actual weather patterns of the entire Earth. We'd be able to affect very precarious and very chaotic, literally, chaotic, scientifically, chaotic, control volcanoes, earthquakes, the weather, obviously ocean, You could start to harness actual planets for their raw materials, such as all the gas giants for their gas for fusion reactions. Yeah, pretty much you're guaranteed to be immortal as a species, at least until the universe thins out and cools down, which is a a whole other topic I'd like to talk about and make it less rambly like this one, less rambly than this one is. It's fascinating that, well, I guess that would be something that a type 3 civilization would be capable of would be to harness solar cells, solar power, wind, hydroelectric,
Starting point is 00:40:17 tidal volcanic. More exotic means to generate usable energy would be to feed a stellar mass into a black hole and collect the photons emitted by the accretion disk. Less exotic would be simply to capture photons already escaping from an existing accretion disk theorized by Roger Penrose, a famous physicist, called the Penrose, process. That extraction is made possible because the rotational energy of the black hole is located not inside the event horizon, but on the outside of it. Region of the Kerr space time called the Ergosphere.
Starting point is 00:42:41 What's the Ergosphere? Touches the event horizon at the poles of a rotating black hole and extends to a greater radius of the equator, at the equator. Ergosphere can be approximated by an oblate, oblate spheroid, while with higher spins it resembles more of a pumpkin shape. Two circles, the outline of a van diagram, two circles not fully. The ergosphere in which a particle is necessarily propelled, propelled in locomotive concurrence.
Starting point is 00:44:18 With the rotating aerosphere become dragged by a rotating space-time in the process, a lump of matter enters into the ergosphere of the black hole, and once it enters the aerosphere, it's forcibly split into two parts, escapes to the event horizon into the black hole. With careful arrangement, the escaping piece of matter can be made to have greater mass energy
Starting point is 00:45:29 than the original piece of matter and the in-falling piece has negative mass energy conserved the effect is that more energy can be extracted than was originally provided the difference being provided by the black hole itself in summary the process results
Starting point is 00:45:52 in a slight decrease in the angular momentum corresponds to a transom of energy to the matter at the exact right time the black hole would probably don't because it sounds like something to may as more might be able to help me with at some point just as it can be arranged to have greater mass energy than the original piece of matter I guess it has something to do with having having its mass like put cutting it in half, halving, halving its mass, or sacrificing half of the mass. Velocity acceleration that it, yeah, the velocity that it originally had,
Starting point is 00:48:36 thereby doubling the process where advanced civilizations could remove substantial portion of the stars matter in controlled form.
