Starting point is 00:00:00 This podcast contains adult language and content. Listener discretion is advised. If you have a story to share, send it to let's not meet stories at gmail.com. It was the fall semester of my second year of college. I was no longer a freshman, and I felt I had a pretty strong grasp on campus life. A female friend of mine from high school, who, I admit I had always found attractive, had started going to my school as well. She was living in the dorms and often required my services as an experienced sophomore co-ed.
Starting point is 00:01:05 One evening, she asked if I wanted to come over to watch a movie on her crappy 12-inch TV, knowing it meant being cuddly on a bed, as that was the only seating available for two in her cramped dorm room I accepted the offer. After the movie ended, curfew was quickly approaching. Due to the dorms policies prohibiting boys from being in the girls' dorms after 11, I began to put on my shoes in preparation for my departure. That was when she grabbed my shoulder. I saw this look of worry in her eyes.
Starting point is 00:01:42 Then I realized she had seemed off all night. Then she confided in me. She said, over the past two nights, someone, some guy, knocks on my door. He does it so soft. that by the time I finally wake up I'm not really sure how long he's even been there and then he talks to me
Starting point is 00:02:03 he repeats the same stuff he keeps asking if I'm sleeping and if he can come in so far I've said nothing I just stay in bed with the blankets pulled up to my chin it goes on for about an hour
Starting point is 00:02:19 and then he finally stops and just leaves I asked my neighbors if they had heard anything or had any similar experiences, but they said no. Now, I knew that she was worried, but I remained calm and figured there could be any number of explanations for why this was happening.
Starting point is 00:02:41 I thought this was most likely a prank, maybe even perpetrated by her neighbors, who supposedly didn't know what was going on. The dorm was pretty secure, though. The hallway lights were always on, the exterior door is locked at 11. So, it had to be a prank. But to console my upset friend,
Starting point is 00:03:04 I agreed to stay the night just in case the events were to reoccur. Much to my dismay, I slept on the floor, but I did sleep. Honestly, I wasn't super concerned. If this guy did end up coming back, I'd just cowboy up, confront the guy, and tell him off, and then hopefully spend the rest of the night next to a great warm body beneath neon purple bedsheets.
Starting point is 00:03:29 I was in a deep sleep when a slight tap on my shoulder abruptly woke me up. It took a moment for me to remember where I was and regain my equilibrium, but shortly after doing so, I heard the soft knocking. It was more of a tapping, very soft, very gentle, and it paused at about every four or five beats. the only light in the room was the light coming from under the door from the hallway
Starting point is 00:03:58 which was slightly obstructed by the two shadows made by the individual's shoes I looked at my friend unsure of how long she had been awake as her face came into focus I began to register her terror that was the first time this whole thing started to get to me
Starting point is 00:04:17 then in my moment of vulnerability I heard the voice. So I quickly shot my attention back at the door. The voice cooed, Are you sleeping sweetly? Sweetly, are you sleeping? Can I come in? Let me in.
Starting point is 00:04:40 A chill shot up my spine. His voice was so soft, yet there was a bit of roughness to it. It didn't sound like that of a young student, it. As he spoke, he didn't even pause in his rhythmic tap. The tapping just kept going over his words, almost muffling them. I quietly stood up and slowly approached the door where I stopped to get a better listen. He kept repeating variations of the same words, sleeping and sweetly. Sometimes he even jumbled up parts of the words in a slur, and he would say
Starting point is 00:05:18 things like, are you sweeping sleetly? His slurring led me to believe that perhaps this was a drunk who somehow stumbled his way into the dorm to harass my friend. After he finished asking for entry once more, I took a warm gulp of air and I spoke up. Hey, you've got the wrong place. Why don't you get lost? The tapping then abruptly stopped. There were no words.
Starting point is 00:05:48 I instantly wished I had thought of something cooler to say. But it seemed to do the trick, so I looked down at the floor, but the shadows of the feet still remained. Then, after only a few seconds, which seemed like a lot longer, one by one the shadows disappeared as he walked away. I let out a sigh of relief, then looked back at my friend. Seeing her grateful smile and teary eyes made me feel like a badass. It apparently made me walk like a badass, too, as she noticed I had a bit of a strut as I approached her. I looked at the open spot on the mattress, and then at her. She then gave me this cutesy smile and a reassuring nod,
Starting point is 00:06:33 so I comically jumped in like a kid at the pole on the first day of summer. We both laughed as we nestled in closer, but then the tapping returned. I popped up with the mixed fuel of fear and anger. The shadows had also returned. I then jumped up, rushing to the door, shouting as I stopped, Hey man, I told you to get the hell out of here. I stopped at the door with my hand on the knob. There was no response from the other side.
Starting point is 00:07:07 I would have killed for one of those peephole things. Honestly, I was too afraid to crack the door open. After a beat, a voice spoke up. this is the R.A. Boys are not allowed on the premises overnight for the safety of other girls. You have to leave our I'll report you and your friend. My friend exclaimed, crap. Then jumped over to answer the door. She put on a pair of pajama pants that were under the covers,
Starting point is 00:07:37 and I gritted my teeth in disappointment, realizing she had slipped them off at some point during the whole ordeal. She ran up beside me, then opened the door. Sorry, she told the R.A., and then continued. You see, there was this guy who, but the R.A. interrupted her. Under no circumstances should a boy stay overnight in the dorm, nor should you sit helplessly in a dangerous situation. If someone were to actually come to your door or any other girl's door at night, you should dial four on your phone for campus security or report the incident to me.
Starting point is 00:08:13 You've been the only one we've had to visit multiple times. Now get that guy out of there. Turns out, the whole thing was this RA's idea of teaching the girls a valuable lesson, and in fact, half of the girls in the hall had experienced the same incident, and it was the RA's boyfriend who was staying with her, who acted it out.
Starting point is 00:08:37 So, in teaching this lesson, the RA was breaking the very same rule she was enforcing, Not only that, but she was teaching this bizarre lesson without the school's knowledge. Later, my friend filed a complaint and the RA was relieved of her duties. This happened 25 years ago. I was 17 years old, 5 feet tall and 95 pounds soaking wet. On this day, I was driving a few friends home after spending all day the lake. Because of this, I was wearing a bikini with some cut-off shorts. I was about to go drop off
Starting point is 00:09:31 my last passenger, who was in the back seat, and head home. I had just come off the freeway and turned onto the main road in town. As I pulled up to a red light, there was an ambulance in the lane to the left pulling up alongside me. Shortly after the light turned green, we all moved forward, and I heard the whoop of a siren. I checked my mirrors, looked to my left, and I saw that an ambulance driver had his window down and was yelling at me, telling me to pull over. I was confused as the siren had only been on for just a short amount of time. I wonder if I had somehow missed seeing their lights on and figured maybe they needed me to
Starting point is 00:10:13 pull over so that they could pass for an emergency. I was even more surprised and confused when the ambulance. pulled up right next to me, and the driver got out and approached my door. He then asked me to step out of the vehicle to speak with him. I was confused, so I asked why I was being pulled over. He again asked me to step out of the car with my license and registration. So I grabbed it out of the glove box, stepped out of the car, and said, I didn't think an ambulance could pull people over.
Starting point is 00:10:45 My friend in the back then piped up and said This is bullshit The ambulance driver's eyes grew wide And he leaned into the car window Telling my friend to shut up Unless he'd like to be in a pair of cuffs I again asked why he was pulling me over Since this was entirely different
Starting point is 00:11:06 Than any other time I had been pulled over in the past I should mention that The looks that this ambulance driver had been giving me up until this point were making me feel incredibly uncomfortable. I felt very exposed, so I brought my arms up to cover myself, and the hair on my arms was standing on end while my gut was churning. The driver told me that he pulled me over
Starting point is 00:11:30 since my car didn't have a front license plate. But what was weird was that he wouldn't have seen that until when he pulled up and got out of the vehicle. Also, I did have a license plate displayed on the front front. passenger side of the windshield, as I didn't have a place to attach the license plate on the front of the car. I tried to point that out, that I had one in the windshield, but he kept telling me how much trouble I was in and how he needed my driver's license and registration. He kept
Starting point is 00:12:00 talking over me and yelling at me whenever I asked any questions. He sounded incredibly angry. He made a big deal about it and eventually told me that I was so lucky he was letting me off with a warning, and he said that I better not let it happen again. The whole thing was so bizarre, and it left me feeling nervous. Looking back at everything, it felt like he was trying to keep me scared so that I wouldn't question anything, especially his authority. He didn't have a name tag or show me a badge or anything. He also didn't have any official ticketing paperwork, and I didn't see a partner in the
Starting point is 00:12:39 ambulance. so I genuinely feel like he was counting on my youth and insecurity to keep me compliant. I also think I was lucky to have a friend in the car to witness everything. I feel like that put a stop to whatever was in this guy's mind that made him so angry. I remember feeling worried about everything as I was going home. I was analyzing everything about the encounter and freaking out since he now had my personal information. I was living on my own, and I wasn't close to my family at the time, so I didn't feel like I had anyone to talk to about it.
Starting point is 00:13:17 I later calmed down a bit once I remembered that the residential information on my ID and registration wasn't up to date. I had moved twice that year and hadn't updated anything yet. So while this whole thing freaked me out, that put me at ease a bit. However, creepy ambulance driver, let's not ever meet again. When things get busy, the first part of my routine that falls apart is meal planning. I'll stare into the fridge with no idea of what to make, or I'll end up buying a bunch of ingredients that don't really go together. That's why I love hungry root.
Starting point is 00:14:06 It's been a huge help for me. They basically take over the planning part. They look at what you like, what to avoid, and what your nutrition goals are, and then build out a week of food that actually fits your lifestyle. What surprised me the most is how well they dial in those preferences. You take a quick quiz, and their smart cart system recommends recipes and ingredients that match your tastes. It's honestly impressive how accurate it's been for me and my wife.
Starting point is 00:14:33 The amount of variety is pretty crazy, too. They've got over 50,000 chef-crafted recipes, and a lot of them can be made in just 15 minutes or less. I've been loving that combination of convenience and options, especially on nights when I just don't want to think about anything after recording or going to band practice or really anything. The quality is also something that I've really come to appreciate. They cut out more than 200 additives, including high-fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives. They also source high-quality meat and seafood with no hormones or antibiotics, and they carry brands that I already trust, like Oatley Vital Farms, Ithaca Hummus, and Harmonis.
Starting point is 00:15:09 harvest. And now that we're right in the middle of the holiday chaos, having groceries show up at my door instead of forcing myself out into the cold has been a lifesaver. Hungry Route helps me avoid food wasting and honestly, the money I saved there makes it a lot easier to budget for the gifts this year. Starting point is 00:15:42 a free item of your choice for life. I haven't been able to get this out of my head since it happened, so I decided to share it. This happened when I was visiting my grandma. She lives in a small town with just a couple of hundred people in it. I like to go on small hikes daily when I'm there.
Starting point is 00:16:05 She and I used to do together, but on this particular sunny day, she decided to stay home. Everything was going as usual, and I decided to take a small hike alongside this little path through the woods that my grandma had recommended to me. I also like to take the opportunity with these short moments of alone time to smoke a little you-know-what while enjoying the landscape. So I was smoking a little bit. After walking for about an hour and a half, I saw a little bit.
Starting point is 00:16:36 a man about 60 meters away, walking in my direction. Something to note is, this is not a very popular hiking trail, so it's actually quite rare to see somebody else. I didn't think anything of this, though, and everything seemed to be normal at this point. As he came closer, I noticed that he was staring at me, as I awkwardly broke eye contact and then made eye contact again. The closer he got, the more tense I felt.
Starting point is 00:17:06 I should quickly add that I'm a man, and I can definitely defend myself. I've met a few other people on this path before, and everything about my prior encounters felt entirely normal, but this one was different. As I walked past him, I noticed a strange grin on his face. He had really bad teeth and was quite tall, and he walked in a way that really unsettled me. It was kind of awkward, so I decided to break the silence, and I said,
Starting point is 00:17:34 he didn't answer me right away but i heard some slight mumbling as he passed me it's tough to describe this but it felt like something was just off about him and i could tell even after we passed each other i felt him looking at me and when we were about ten meters away from each other i turned around and i caught him staring at me he wasn't even walking he was just standing there Once he knew that I had seen him, he quickly turned around as if he were trying to play off the fact that I had caught him staring. Remember, I had smoked weed about 20 minutes earlier, so this really freaked me out. As such, I tried to put my feelings aside as paranoia from the wheat. After about 20 minutes of following the trail, I noticed that I was walking into a dead end since I had accidentally taken a wrong turn. This meant that I had to walk in the exact direction. that the strange man from earlier had went.
Starting point is 00:18:38 I decided to pull myself together and distract myself with some music as I headed back, but I just couldn't get that previous encounter out of my head, and the fact that I had to go in his direction again was freaking me out. I ended up stalling for at least 40 minutes, and I figured at that point the chances of seeing him again were pretty slim, so I decided to just focus on getting home, especially since I was beginning to feel very tired from while, of the sun exposure.
Starting point is 00:19:06 So I set off and started making my way back down the hiking trail to head home. I was making some good progress, but then I noticed that someone was sitting on the small bench right next to the path. It was him. It felt like he was waiting for me. It felt like I was in a goddamn horror movie. A bunch of thoughts then rushed through my head. Did he really wait for me?
Starting point is 00:19:31 Did he know about the dead end and know that I'd have. have to head back. I was slightly panicking, but decided to keep my cool. The bench was placed in a way that he couldn't see me, but he would be able to see me, facing my back, when I would have gone past him. As I came closer to the bench, my heart began to beat in a way that it hadn't in years. As I passed the bench, he noticed me and began looking over his shoulder, and then there it was again, that same unsettling grin that he gave me earlier. It gave me goosebumps. I kept walking at a normal pace and stay diligent about looking behind me as I walked past while he kept staring at me strangely. He was just so creepy. I had this fear that he would suddenly get up and
Starting point is 00:20:18 chase me. As he kept looking right into my soul, I started slowly jogging, which turned into a sprint. I then ran as quickly as I could until I couldn't see him anymore for the rest of the walk home I could not get this out of my head it really startled me there was something not right with him and I could sense it with certainty
Starting point is 00:20:40 even though I had never felt this way about anyone else I had ever met I will not forget this encounter anytime soon somehow I just can't brush off the thought that maybe I just got really lucky that day In March of 2012, my fiancé, who is now my husband, and I were on our way home from Tampa, Florida. We decided to spend the last spring break ever there since he was graduating from college that year. It was 2 a.m. and there was nobody else on the road except for us.
Starting point is 00:21:26 We were 10 hours into our 10-hour trip, but we still had two more to go because our GPS screwed up and decided to take us through small towns on the border of South Carolina and North Carolina. It suddenly began pouring. It was so bad that I had to pull over and take refuge under a bypass until it passed. After about 20 minutes, it led up just enough that I could drive safe. safely again. So off we went. Not even ten minutes after that, I was in the right-hand lane, driving over the speed limit when this car appeared out of nowhere in the left lane and passed us.
Starting point is 00:22:04 Both my fiancé and I were wondering how stupid this guy was to be driving that fast in the rain. And then he slammed on his brakes. He slammed on them so hard that we thought there was a deer in the road, but there wasn't. then we thought that maybe he was about to miss his exit but that wasn't the case either there wasn't another exit coming up for another mile or two and we didn't just pass one what happened next really sticks with me to this day i'm not someone who gets scared or creeped out all that easily i usually just get angry instead but ever since this happened it still makes me nervous when i get on the road in the middle of the night Well, after he slammed on his brakes, we ended up blowing past him and I glanced in my rearview mirror to see what he was doing. I then saw him get in our lane and start speeding up. Right when he was on my ass, he put his brights on.
Starting point is 00:23:04 At first I thought maybe I had my brights on when he passed us, so I figured he got pissed and was just being a douche about it. But no, I didn't have my brights on. Now I sped up to get away from him because my eyes are, very sensitive to bright lights, and I was getting sketched out. With no luck, he was still on my ass, so I got into the left lane and slowed down. Then he slowed down and got behind me. So I then switched back to the right-hand lane and sped up, and again, he was right on my tail.
Starting point is 00:23:38 My fiancé also started to get creeped out, so he was telling me to lose the guy. I tried, but the lane switching and the speeding continued for another ten minutes. I then saw that an exit was coming up and got an idea. I floored it and hit around 110 miles per hour, which made me nervous because it was still raining. But it put enough distance between me and this guy to get on the exit, turn into a parking lot, then turn my lights off and hope that he wouldn't notice we were there. We didn't see him follow us,
Starting point is 00:24:12 so we decided to wait a couple of minutes to make sure that there was more than enough distance between us and him, before getting back onto the highway. When we got back on, there was a group of about 20 cars we had to merge into. I was going at the speed that everybody else was going when something in my rearview mirror caught my eye.
Starting point is 00:24:34 It was a car about six cars back. It was weaving in and out of traffic. My fiancé turned around to look as the car got closer to us, and he realized it was the same exact car that had been following us. I sped up and got out of there Fortunately for us
Starting point is 00:24:51 He got stuck behind a line of slow people And our exit for the major interstate That we were supposed to be on was coming up As far as I know, he didn't follow us This is unrelated but as a bonus About six months later Somewhere over a hundred miles away from where this happened Something eerily similar happened to me
Starting point is 00:25:12 When I was by myself The only difference is that instead of trying to lose this person by putting distance between us, I faked them out by taking an exit to a major interstate at the last second. The person was unable to follow me, and thankfully, nothing even close to creepy has happened to me since on the road. I'm a last-minute shopper. Every year I tell myself, I'll get ahead of things,
Starting point is 00:25:46 and every year I end up wandering around the stores with zero ideas and everything picked over. So this time instead of panicking, I planned ahead a little bit and I decided to get aura frames. And honestly, it's the first gift in a long time that feels personal without requiring me to be some kind of holiday genius. The person I struggle with the most is my mom. She's one of those people who already has everything she needs and if she wants something, I get it for her. But she loves photos of family. and I realized an aura frame would actually mean something to her. So I've been preloading it with a bunch of pictures of me and my wife and our dogs,
Starting point is 00:26:24 you know, old ones that she hasn't seen in years, plus newer ones that I know she'll love. And the coolest part is how easy it is to make it feel thoughtful. You can upload unlimited photos and videos straight from your phone. You can even add a little message so it arrives already feeling personal. And once she plugs it in, I can keep adding to it from anywhere all year long. It makes the whole gift feel alive instead of like a one-and-done present. You can't wrap togetherness, but you can frame it. For a limited time, save on the perfect gift by visiting AuraFrames

I'm a 26-year-old female, and I live in a flat in a building that's located in a good area.
Starting point is 00:27:30 My building is located in a long, windy cul-de-sac, where there aren't too many cars coming in and out, unless it's people leaving for work or coming home from work. my boyfriend was away in Thailand for a month and we usually take the dog out together at night while he was gone I went out with our dog by myself which I was fine with as I usually feel safe in our neighborhood
Starting point is 00:27:55 then one night at around 8 p.m. I left the flat with the dog now my dog is extremely excitable especially around other people she just had surgery to be spayed so she had a cone on her head and stitches that were in the process of healing. As I was waiting for my dog to do her business, a car pulled into the cul-de-sac and slowly drove past me.
Starting point is 00:28:23 The guy made a friendly nod towards me so I gave him a quick little smile, you know, just to be polite. The guy then parked at the front of the building while I was on the other side of the car park on the grass where my dog was. I was watching my dog and trying to urge her to hurry up because it was freezing. When I looked up, the man was standing outside of his car, staring right at me. I was freaked out about this, so I turned my attention back to my dog, and I kept looking over my shoulder while he continued staring with this creepy-ass smile on his face.
Starting point is 00:29:02 I looked away again for a second, and then he started slowly walking along the road towards us. now I'm a very friendly person but I can be paranoid and aware as a woman should be at night and something about him made me feel scared he was walking so slowly as if he wanted to talk to me so I hid behind a van
Starting point is 00:29:26 and told my dog to hurry up and pee I couldn't see him anymore and this kind of scared me but I could hear his footsteps coming towards us the guy eventually peaked his face around the van and my dog went nuts she was jumping around barking aggressively which she never does with people and this guy didn't take it as a reason
Starting point is 00:29:48 to just go back to his car my dog was showing that she didn't like this man's presence but even though she was clearly displeased he just continued approaching us slowly I started backing up and I told him to please leave us alone as she just had surgery and this interaction was making her too excited.
Starting point is 00:30:09 Then, with the most sinister tone, he asked me what my name was. I couldn't hear him over my dog, so he kept repeating this question over and over again. I eventually understood what he was asking, even though my dog never stopped barking or going nuts. I then repeated, please, my dog just had surgery. You need to walk away. She's getting too excited.
Starting point is 00:30:35 He ignored this request again and kept walking towards us, still asking for my name. So I started walking away from him. As he pondered for a minute, he kept smiling creepily, and then he eventually backed up slowly so that he could continue to face me. He then walked back over to his car and looked at me over his shoulder intermittently. He just stood there and stared for at least another three minutes. I pretended my dog was doing. something when she was actually just standing there.
Starting point is 00:31:09 The next time I looked up, he was gone. I was shaken from this interaction, so I sent some voice notes to my sister to tell her what was going on. She told me to go inside, but she didn't realize I couldn't move. I was frozen in fear. Eventually I saw a woman and her son walk up to the front door so I half jogged over with my dog and went inside at the same time. The front of our building has glass doors, so I glanced inside, and I saw that the man was there waiting for us.
Starting point is 00:31:43 I told the woman, this man has been following me and my dog, and I'm scared. So she walked in with me. When the man saw that I wasn't alone, he walked right past us and out of the building. Once he was out of there, I ran to the lift with my dog, got into my flat, and locked my doors. I decided to tell my two male neighbors about it as my boyfriend was away and they agreed to run downstairs if I ever needed them. I took a picture of his car and license plate
Starting point is 00:32:14 as my twin sister catches the train to get home late at night after work and I wanted her to be wary of him. Then about a week later, I was out with my dog at around 11 a.m. We were just doing our usual walk around the block. We walked into the building and as we were heading to the lift, I saw the man. He peaked his head around the corner. He was looking for me, and once he saw me,
Starting point is 00:32:39 he started walking towards me. At first, I didn't recognize him, but when he smiled, with that standard, creepy smile, I realized who it was. He said, hi. So I said hi in return. And then I made a beeline for the lift. He came towards me and my dog,
Starting point is 00:32:58 so I pressed the lift button, and watched it come down from the sixth floor. As he was standing close to me again, my dog was going nuts again. The man then asked me for my name, but I could hardly hear him because of my dog. I didn't understand what he was saying, so I asked,
Starting point is 00:33:18 What? Are you asking for my dog's name or mine? Yours, he replied. I froze, but managed to give him a fake name, and then he started to move closer. He told me his name, but I wasn't paying attention. The lift was about to open, and I was focusing on hopping in so that I could run away. I curtly replied, Nice to meet you, as the lift doors opened.
Starting point is 00:33:43 Then I walked in and pressed the button to go to my floor, hoping that he'd leave me alone. He then said, I'd like to see you again. Shivers ran down my spine. I was so creeped out. I let him know that I had a boyfriend, but thanked him for his head. interest. As I said this, the lift doors were closing, and he tried to stick his hand out to stop the lift from closing, but thank God he was just a bit too late, and the doors were able to close. I'm only on the next floor up, so I was afraid that he was going to run up the stairs, as it would
Starting point is 00:34:17 have been easy for him to see what floor I got off at. So I paused and thought about pressing the number for a different floor, but I just wanted to get back to my flat and lock myself in with my dog. When the lift opened, I noticed he hadn't gone up the stairs, so I high-tailed it to the front door. There's a glass door that opens into the stairwell, and I could swear that I saw someone coming up, so I ran inside right away and locked the front door. I was so confused by what had just happened, so I messaged everyone with an update to let them know that I saw the man again. They told me to phone the non-emergency number for the police to at least get it on record.
Starting point is 00:34:59 I ended up doing that, and the police arrived at my flat at 3 p.m. I explained everything to them, and they said that I could either get the police to go to his front door and tell him to knock it off, or tell him to leave me alone next time I saw him. If I ended up doing the latter option, if he didn't leave me alone after that, I'd be able to phone the police again,
Starting point is 00:35:20 and it would be considered harassment. The police couldn't do anything more, as they took my report, which I guess was fair enough. I didn't want to anger him at this stage, as a crime really hadn't been committed, but I didn't understand why this man just couldn't leave me alone. I clearly showed him that I was not interested. In any case, I just have a terrible gut feeling about this guy. We all have that one friend with a habit that they're constantly trying to break, but somehow never quite managed to. For me, it's a buddy who's always fidgeting with something or reaching for something out of the routine.
Starting point is 00:36:17 So I ended up giving them a fume a few months back, and they just won't stop talking about it. If you haven't seen one yet, fume is a flavored air device. It's not a vape. It's not a pipe. It's a completely different alternative that lets you satisfy that urge to reach for something without nicotine, vapor, or batteries. When he opened it, the first thing he noticed was how weighted it feels and how naturally the twisty barrel fits into that restless, fidgety habit that he's always trying to get a handle on. A couple of days later, he texted me and said that he loves it, especially the Christmas. and the peach blush, which he said tasted better than he expected for something that isn't
Starting point is 00:36:57 trying to mimic a vape. And honestly, hearing how he talks about it makes me feel like I finally gave him something actually useful instead of another silly holiday gift. And the safety side mattered to him. Fium continuously invests in third-party studies, including toxicology reports on the plant compounds that they use in their cores, and they're backed by doctors in the U.S., which made him feel better about trying something new. Starting point is 00:37:43 I live in a managed complex that has two buildings. There's the main building with the lobby, mailroom, and amenities. There's also some housing above, and then the secondary building is all residential. On Sunday night, I had a DoorDash delivery dropped off. I always tell them that they can drop off my orders at the entrance of the second building so that I don't have to cross over the main building. But I don't think the delivery drivers ever read the special instructions. When I read the notification from DoorDash, I saw that my order had been delivered to the lobby
Starting point is 00:38:22 in the main building at around 11 p.m. As I made my way over, I noticed my Dasher left a note on the delivery confirmation saying there was a suspicious man in the lobby and that he was worried that he might take my food. When I came down,
Starting point is 00:38:40 a guy was sitting on his phone carefully watching my food. As I was approaching, he said, Oh, you're here. To which I responded, thanks for waiting. I figured this must have been the door-dasher, so I picked up my order and started to turn around. The man then got up, and instead of heading out like I had expected,
Starting point is 00:39:02 he started heading in the direction of the elevators. I actually live in this building, he said. I live in Apartment 303. What's your name? I gave him a fake name and cut the conversation short, but the pieces were coming together in my mind. This wasn't the door-dasher. This was the suspicious man who the door-dasher had warned me about. He was now seemingly pretending to be the door-dasher,
Starting point is 00:39:31 and he waited for me to come down to act as though he made the delivery. To get back to my building from where we were, it's possible to either use the elevators in the main building to get to the fourth floor and walk over to the secondary building, or cut across the garage to get there. I noticed the key fob in his hands, so I waited for him to click the elevator and step inside. I definitely didn't want to share the elevator with him
Starting point is 00:39:57 because if I did, he'd know where I lived. So when I gathered that he was taking the elevator, I decided that I would take the shortcut through the garage. After he stepped in, I walked through both sets of doors and into the garage with my senses heightened. Halfway through I decided to look behind me to verify that I was alone,
Starting point is 00:40:19 only to see the man in the doorway. He hadn't taken the elevator after all, and he was now following me. Heart racing, I booked it until I was through the garage doors connecting to my building. I then started mashing the elevator buttons, hoping the elevator would come quickly,
Starting point is 00:40:38 but I could hear it was still slowly coming down. In a split second, I tried to think if I would be strong enough to hold down the door with the weight of my body if he came pushing through. But that would mean that we would be stuck in this area where there were little to no cameras, no witnesses, and no cell phone service.
Starting point is 00:41:00 I knew that I was running out of time, so I eyed the stairwell, and while I clutched my food, I booked it up the stairs, taking two steps at a time. I made it up two floors, so I was then on the fourth floor, the one where you would transfer buildings,
Starting point is 00:41:15 And now that I was in the secondary building, my building, I was worried that if he indeed was still following me, he'd know which building I was in. So I decided that I needed to go back to the main building. I figured that if he was still behind me when I got back over there, I would know for sure that he was following me because we just did a circle. From the corner of my eye in the distance, I could see someone taking out their trash in the reflection of the door. As a reminder, it was 11 p.m., and this was the first person I had seen since this whole thing started. I knew that it would be in my best interest to be next to anyone, so I cut through the courtyard, through the conservatory, and into the hallway of the fourth floor in the main building. Just as I stopped to catch my breath, the man who had been following me burst through the conservatory doors and caught up to me, huffing and puffing. He then accused me of stealing the door-dash order.
Starting point is 00:42:16 He was yelling in my face. He told me I could be evicted or sent to prison. I hardly looked him in the eyes for longer than three seconds, but he looked bewildered. At this point, the person taking out their trash to the chute was nowhere to be seen, and this man was coming closer. Even when I would back up, he would inch in closer. I tried talking loudly,
Starting point is 00:42:41 hoping, if anything were to happen, the residents in the unit behind me could hear. He continued to raise his voice, claiming that the number 1119 on the receipt stapled outside of the bag was the real recipient's apartment number, and that I had stolen it from them. I took a look at the receipt, and 199 was in fact the order number, but not the apartment number. However, he was convinced it was someone's apartment unit number. Not that I needed to explain to him, but even if I was taking someone else's order, which I wasn't, was he really going to follow me to my apartment to verify where I lived? Was he really going to ensure my apartment matched the number on the receipt on the bag?
Starting point is 00:43:30 He wound up catching up to me relatively quickly, considering I was sprinting and out of breath. This absolutely meant that he was following me and chasing me down, which as a man, circumstances aside, I'm not sure why he'd ever deliberately chase a woman by herself at night. This made me feel like it was never about the order. Why would he pretend to go into an elevator in the beginning only to chase me across two buildings under the guise of assuming I was stilling food? In any case, it definitely dawned on him that we were the only people around. As I was standing there, he continued inching near me and poking the receipt. I thought I heard someone coming through the hallway in the distance, so I clicked the elevator button while he
Starting point is 00:44:16 continued threatening me with eviction and being arrested. I didn't wait for him to get out on the elevator, though. I sprinted through the conservatory, through the courtyard, and back over to my building, where I finally caught the elevator up to take me to my floor. When I got to my apartment, I felt paralyzed. I was shaking from the encounter. I was so terrified that my breathing was labored and raspy. I didn't even have asthma but I could barely catch my breath for a few minutes and I was grasping onto anything that I could so that I could feel grounded. I wrote a long detailed email to my management with screenshots from DoorDash and exact accounts and locations of where everything happened so that they could corroborate my account with their camera footage. The next morning,
Starting point is 00:45:07 management and two maintenance men came knocking on my door. Of course, I was frazzled by the events of the night before, and when I opened the door, they could see me visibly shaking. They came to apologize about the events, saying they had seen the footage, and it was indeed scary. They told me I needed to file a police report immediately. The property management was kind, saying he would sit and call the police with me so that I didn't have to do it alone. I asked him if he knew who the resident was, and he said that they knew who he was, and that this wasn't the first time he had been reported for bothering other residents.
Starting point is 00:45:46 That made my stomach sink, but I quickly got ready and met the property management downstairs, outside the building, so that we could make the call together. After I gave the police my account of what happened, the property manager chimed in with his accounts and included that I was the fourth or fifth email that this resident had harassed. The property manager said that while he has harassed, women in the complex before, he's never followed them at night.
Starting point is 00:46:16 The property manager added that he had managed multiple properties before, but he's never seen a resident following another resident in the manner that I was followed. The property manager went on to explain that this resident usually finds a woman by herself and hones in on them. He never approaches men, and he doesn't approach women that are with men. They also said that this man had been arrested for harassing a woman before and he has been sent to the hospital
Starting point is 00:46:47 for his mental health issues He was even recently booked and released and he had been back for two weeks before my encounter with him had occurred The responder on the other line noted this situation was quite severe so they sent an officer to the scene to collect an official report While we waited for the officer
Starting point is 00:47:07 I learned the resident's full name, birthday, and unit number. The property manager also revealed that he had been living there for less than half a year on what I'm assuming is a 12-month lease. So, he still has a ways to go. When the officer arrived, he asked if I could remember if the man had a tool or weapon in his hands,
Starting point is 00:47:31 but I didn't know. I mentioned that there was camera footage, so I suggested that we go and see if he did. Turns out, he did have a weapon. I was stunned. The officer asked if the man specifically said, I will kill you or I will shoot you. I said no, but assured him that this man was still threatening me.
Starting point is 00:47:52 The officer said that unfortunately, since he didn't use that exact verbiage, that he only qualifies as being a nuisance, and being a nuisance isn't against the law and isn't grounds for arrest. My heart dropped. My property manager said that they had been trying to evict him. But the eviction process is a long process, so there wasn't anything that they could do.
Starting point is 00:48:19 The officer gave me his card with my case number and told me that I should call him if I was ever approached by the man again or if I felt unsafe. After that, I went back to my apartment, stunned, and tried to figure out the next steps. I decided to order additional self-defense items, including an apartment doorbell camera. Since he was close enough to my food order to read the faded ink on the receipt on the bag, he also knew what my name was. I was worried that he would put two and two together
Starting point is 00:48:51 and type my name into the directory outside of our building and figure out my unit number. When I thought about this, I didn't want to risk running into him before my camera had arrived, so I stayed locked up until it came. While I was staying locked up, given the information I had about him, I decided to do my own research and find his public records. To my surprise, I learned that he had actually been involved in six court cases since 2018, and the most recent court record was from August
Starting point is 00:49:26 2024. All of his cases have been for stalking, harassment, domestic violence, and attempts to get him to surrender his firearms. He has refused to turn them over, so he still owns guns, and he's had restraining orders issued against him, and multiple reissued anti-harassment protection orders. Multiple women have attempted to serve him protection orders several times, but they all fell through because he's actively dodging it by never showing up to court and it seems
Starting point is 00:50:01 he's been hard for law enforcement to get a hold of I couldn't believe it this man was able to freely move about common spaces in our complex and management has never mentioned anything
Starting point is 00:50:15 about his record to the residence thus disregarding our safety now I knew this was more than just an annoying neighbor but rather someone who could be a legitimate danger to others. I was dealing with a man with unresolved mental health issues who was still in possession of his multiple firearms, and he was very angry with me.
Starting point is 00:50:39 Given his history of season stalking, I was worried that if he saw me again too soon, he would fixate on me since our encounter was still fresh, and I was nervous his behavior would possibly escalate. A few days passed, and I hadn't left my building, but I knew that my doorbell camera had arrived, so I was trying to arrange for how I could get to the mailroom, which is in the building that he lives in and on the floor that he is on.
Starting point is 00:51:10 I asked management about the footage of our encounter, and after two days of dragging on the request, they finally sent me clips of our encounters in different areas of the two buildings. In one of the videos, you could see that he followed, me into the garage a bit after he pretended to take the elevator. What freaks me out most about the clip is that you could see me enter the elevator lobby of my building from the garage, click the elevator button, and frantically pace back and forth. But the footage showed me leaning against the door as I realized I was running out of time
Starting point is 00:51:46 and then I took the stairwell. A few moments later, you see him come in. Look at the pressed elevator button, and deduced that I must have taken the stairwell before following suit. The footage on its own absolutely shows that he had harmful intent. Oddly enough, the footage when he caught up to me and poked the receipt on the bag went missing, but management sent additional footage from after I had run back to my building. Anyways, a few days after I had been staying inside, one evening I thought of an idea of how to pick up my mail. I have a married friend who lives in the guy's building, so I asked if she would be comfortable meeting me on the fourth floor of her building to go with me.
Starting point is 00:52:33 She agreed, and I remember taking deep breaths as I got to the end of my hallway, and I had my friend on the phone as I was heading over to her. As I opened the door to the courtyard hypervigilantly, I looked across the conservatory, and I saw a man there. I squinted, as I figured it couldn't be, but it was indeed him. He was just standing in the conservatory. He locked eyes with me and started mouthing some things. Then he smiled and began yelling.
Starting point is 00:53:08 Immediately I started shaking and crying, so I ran back to my building as quickly as I could. My friend was in the hallway behind him, so she witnessed everything as he was yelling at me. me. Some people in the hallway asked me if I was okay, but I couldn't speak. My friend, still on the line, told me to go back to my apartment and that she would meet me there with her husband. They came up a few moments later and stayed with me as I frantically packed a go bag. We decided it wasn't safe for me to be alone in my apartment, so I reached out to
Starting point is 00:53:43 the friend who lived elsewhere in the city and asked to crash at their place. Once my other friend arrived to pick me up, my friend and her husband escorted me through the hallway. On my first day when I was staying at my friend's house, I wrote an email to the property management again and explained my latest incident with the resident. They didn't respond to me.
Starting point is 00:54:08 My friend who lives in the complex went to management with her husband and reported the incident as well since she was there to witness the man yelling at me. She said management was aware of me and my complaints, but they said they couldn't do anything because he is protected under the Fair Housing Act. I don't have a male partner,
Starting point is 00:54:28 which seems to be the only deterrent for this resident. So my sister and her husband are trying to figure out when they can fly in and help me pack up so I can just get out of there. I'm devastated because it's a beautiful, complex with incredible amenities. The interior of the building is gorgeous. It's pretty new, but none of that even means anything when my safety is at risk.
Starting point is 00:54:54 I have no solid plans on what to do next, but I can't go back to my unit until I have protection. Even though it's been days since this initially started, I'm awoken every morning by my heart racing, hot flashes and paranoia with every passing sound. This is a new kind of anxiety that I've never felt before, and my days are clouded with fear of bumping into him. I'll never forget the moment when I looked back as he was chasing me. I'll never forget unexpectedly seeing his body in the door frame while I ran through the parking garage. So to the resident, let's not meet ever again. Thanks for listening.
