Starting point is 00:00:00 This podcast contains adult language and content. Listener discretion is advised. If you have a story to share, send it to Let's Not Meet Stories at gmail.com. Where I am from, there are tons of parks. But as a teenage girl who was going to hang out with her friends and a bunch of guys, I obviously picked the biggest park with the most to do and the least amount of people around. For some context, I'll just say this park is down the street from a few halfway houses, and work release programs
Starting point is 00:00:59 for recently released criminals. Most of the time, the people in these homes and programs with free time don't have anywhere to go, so they just end up at this park just to have a change of scenery. So when my friends and I go there,
Starting point is 00:01:16 it's generally likely that there are some sketchy people whom we have to watch out for. On this day in particular, the guys we were with were boring. So my friends and I were just sitting on the sidewalk talking and half listening to them when a girl walked up to us. While I'm not naive, especially in this park and especially in the area where I live, I am a girl and I won't turn away
Starting point is 00:01:40 from a young girl. I especially won't turn away from a young girl who was crying, upset, and missing her shoes and phone, just like the girl who was approaching us. The girl asked me if she could use my phone to make a call. Now I was hesitant, of course, because I had thought this girl could run away with my phone, but again, I decided I'd rather help her just in case she genuinely needed the help. So I offered her my phone, and she held on to it for a few minutes before beginning to cry again. She then stated that she couldn't remember anyone's number, so she couldn't make a call. I told her it was okay, and then she broke down and told us that she couldn't remember what happened to her at all the night before. She told us she was with a man, and they went out for
Starting point is 00:02:28 drinks just for fun. Then she said that he suddenly got very angry and she couldn't remember anything that happened after that. She just remembered being found in the parking lot. And she was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for a head injury and bruises and abrasions all over her body. She said that they then dropped her off at the park because she didn't remember how to get home. She kept apologizing and saying that she didn't mean to ruin our day. My friends and I know longer cared about what the guys we were with were talking about, we were just wanting to get this girl some help. I offered to call 911, but she was concerned that the police wouldn't care about her situation. We got her some blankets and food and some other things, and promised that
Starting point is 00:03:14 we would take her to the hospital instead of calling an ambulance. We also said that we would lobby for her and stay with her the entire time, but she didn't love the idea, and I could tell she was getting agitated and aggressive towards us. I could tell things were starting to take a turn, and this was the first red flag. When my friend went to get her car from across the park, the girl told me that she was scared she would be put back into the psych ward.
Starting point is 00:03:45 She didn't explain that part of the story to me, and I didn't press for details. But I told her that I couldn't promise they wouldn't. I told her that I could only promise that we would go to the hospital with her and stay and support her as long as we were allowed to. But she kept crying and asked us to take her to the local store instead. We didn't want to upset her any further than she already was,
Starting point is 00:04:10 so we decided to take her. The store she wanted to go to was only a few miles away from the park, so it wasn't a big deal. But during the whole ride, this girl kept digging through her bag. and that was when I first realized I felt a bit uneasy about this situation she didn't seem to take her hand out of her bag
Starting point is 00:04:32 for the entire seven-minute ride and until we got there she seemed to be staring at me I didn't think much of it though she had just gone through a traumatic experience and I wasn't going to try and minimize it when we arrived at the store she instructed us to take her behind the store
Starting point is 00:04:52 where she said two men would be waiting for her. So we got out of the car and started leading her to the two men, and when we saw them, she ran towards them, breaking down crying. She ran straight into one of the men, but the men stood still, not making any moves or gestures to comfort her or show her any empathy. It didn't seem normal to me. We walked over to them and tried to explain the situation,
Starting point is 00:05:21 and I have never seen someone care so little about somebody that they apparently knew. The man then grabbed her by the wrists while continuing to listen to my friends and me without even looking at the girl. This was another major red flag. At this point I knew that something was not right and neither of these men were going to help this girl out.
Starting point is 00:05:44 When my friends and I finished explaining the situation, the man who was gripping the girl's wrists said, we're going to handle this. Do you want to come with us? While we initially told the girl we were going to stay with her, that was when we were offering to take her to the hospital ourselves. I did not want to go with these men, and that was quite obvious to my friends.
Starting point is 00:06:08 My friends said that we could follow in our car if they needed someone to explain the situation at the hospital. But the men were insisting that we get into their car. It didn't make sense. They had a smaller car, and it wasn't big enough to fit all of us. Yet another red flag. He gave the girl a look, and she stepped back towards us and mentioned that we had said we would stay with her. And that's when I noticed she wasn't actually crying.
Starting point is 00:06:37 She was just making a face like she was. When we kept saying we would go, just in our car, the girl reached for one of my friend's hands, and she got aggressive and started yelling at her. And once she had a hold of my friend's arm, she would not let go. I was trying to get her to let go of my friend's arm since my friend was obviously panicking. The girl was just yelling and screaming in her face.
Starting point is 00:07:03 One of the men then turned to me and asked, How am I supposed to believe you guys aren't part of this? You're probably responsible for this. You probably heard her, and you're just bringing her back to us. You need to come with us now. Then the man grabbed my arm and started pulling me towards the car. Even though I was scared, I didn't freeze under pressure.
Starting point is 00:07:23 I began pulling back, trying everything that I could to get away from this guy, but I'm not a very strong girl, and I'm still a teenager, and the odds felt like they were against me. I was fully convinced this guy was going to get me into his car, but before I could, my friend yanked her arm free from the girl and started screaming. My friend then screamed the kind of scream that only comes from a teenage girl. It was the kind of scream that gets people's attention, and they look no matter what. The man then dropped my arm, pushed me away, and dragged the girl that we met at the park
Starting point is 00:07:59 into his car before driving off and leaving us standing there. My friends and I were freaking out, so we got in the car right away. We didn't know what to do, but naively, I was worried about the girl from the park because, I don't think my mind wrapped around the fact that she was trying to get us into the car with those guys. We called 911 and explained the situation from the very start. We even told them the story that the girl gave us about not knowing what happened to her. They said that they would get back to us with some information. We got a few calls from them in the days following the events,
Starting point is 00:08:36 and the summary of the story that we got from them was that the girl that we tried to help had been at the hospital the night before, but not for the reason she gave us. She was there because she was having a mental health problem, which was common for her, and she was brought in for drug use. As for the men behind the store, neither of them was her boyfriend nor a family member.
Starting point is 00:09:01 The police still don't know who they are in relation to her, but the man who grabbed her by the wrists had been charged with aggravated kidnapping on multiple occasions. So a crying girl in the park and the men that she brought us to, let's not meet again. A few months ago, on an early Sunday morning at around 5 a.m., I woke up to this violent banging and shaking on my door. I live alone on the second floor of an old apartment building downtown in a very small town. I had been taking Benadryl to sleep for a few months, and sometimes I slept strangely. So for a moment, I thought, did that really?
Starting point is 00:09:57 really just happen? And then I heard whoever it was start doing it again. This time these super loud bangs sounded like the person was charging at the door. That was when I realized both my fan and AC unit were off and the power was off. After the second round of banging stopped, I heard someone stomped down the stairs and I was just lying there trying to process what had just happened. It was dead quiet without the fan And I heard the guy's voice outside say No, we were just walking I was still lying motionless, scared
Starting point is 00:10:38 Trying to think of someone to call A few minutes prior to this My downstairs neighbor got my package by mistake And messaged to me on Facebook about it after seeing my name I've seen her a few times And I know she has two absolutely ripped pit bulls So I messaged her thinking she wouldn't even see it until she woke up later in the morning.
Starting point is 00:11:00 She wound up seeing my message right away and she immediately called me. She told me she saw two guys come out of the building after trying her door, my door, and the door of the person across the hall from me. And then they tried to lie and say that it wasn't them. She said she had already called the police, even when the intruders were already gone, so I went downstairs to meet her. We found that the breaker box door had been ripped off and all of the switches were flipped.
Starting point is 00:11:31 This sucked because it shut off the camera outside. Our other neighbor woke up, but she had no idea any of this was happening. My downstairs neighbor got the power back on, and the cops showed up within 20 minutes to get our statements. My downstairs neighbor was awake the whole time and heard them trying her door. Her dogs were now doing the low growl thing instead of barking. She gave the police the descriptions of the guys who were attempting the break-in, but the cops haven't updated us as of yet.
Starting point is 00:12:05 After I shared this story at work, some of my coworkers said that maybe this happened because of the TikTok trend where people were kicking indoors. If that's the case, I'm thankful that my door opens outward. But I feel like cutting the power and trying to, to open all three units seems more like an actual break-in attempt. And I've barely slept since this happened. To the two guys who tried to break in at 5 a.m.,
Starting point is 00:12:31 consider yourselves lucky you aren't being crapped out by a jacked pit bull right now. And let's not ever meet. January is when I take a hard look at the habits that actually support my health. And one thing that I've learned over time is that with supplements, trust really matters. I'm a lot more careful now about what I take and where it comes from, which is why I use momentous. January is when we recommit to the habits that support our health and well-being, and naturally we start looking at what can support these goals, including supplements.
Starting point is 00:13:17 But choosing the right supplements can be confusing, because not only are there so many brands out there, the supplement industry itself is a low-trust category. It's lightly regulated, products are easy to make, and companies don't even have to list everything on their label. That's exactly what sets momentous apart from me. They built the momentous standard, and it shows in everything that they make.
Starting point is 00:13:42 Their ingredients are top tier from grass-fed European dairy cows for their protein to the purest form of creatine monohydrate, creatine including creepure. No fillers, no artificial sweeteners, just formulas backed by real science. But what really gives me confidence is their testing and transparency.
Starting point is 00:14:01 Every product is independently certified by NSF for sport or informed sport, meaning it's tested for contaminants, heavy metals, banned substances, and verified for label accuracy. If it doesn't meet their standard, it doesn't ship, period. In a space where trust is rare, Momentus is redefining what trust looks like. One of my friends grew up in Rye and had done it many times before, so while I was nervous about getting arrested for trespassing, I did feel a bit reassured
Starting point is 00:15:05 that the park wasn't very well patrolled or monitored at night. At around 1 a.m., we drove and parked our car next to a large fence and attempted to scale it. It was rather difficult and required us to step onto each other's hands to get over it, which gave me intense anxiety about how we were planning to get all three of us back over the fence on the way out. After both of my friends got over the fence, I attempted to stay behind and wait in the car, but finally decided to join them. After several minutes of struggling,
Starting point is 00:15:39 I finally made it over the fence on my own, and we began walking while lighting up a joint. It was pitch black at this point, and almost all of the lights in the park were off. We approached the water flume ride, which went up to about 150, feet and then dropped into a steep slope. Along the side of the ride was a staircase for technicians and employees, which my friends decided
Starting point is 00:16:05 to climb for a better view. I chickened out of doing that and decided to stay at the bottom because of my fear of heights. As they ascended the stairs, I looked out across the park and noticed something very strange. We weren't alone. Several hundred feet in front of us was a pond with what appeared to be. a small boat or raft inside, and four people riding in it with flashlights attached to their heads. What was even stranger was the fact that two dark figures were swimming in the pond, looking for something underneath the water. I could barely make out the silhouettes of these figures, but after a few
Starting point is 00:16:45 minutes, I noticed that they could see us and began to mobilize the boat in our direction. I frantically started to whisper scream at my friends, who were all. the way at the top of the water ride, but they could barely hear me. By then, the boat had reached land, and the little lights on these people's helmets were now heading in our direction fast. My friends finally raced down the stairs, and we began sprinting as quickly as we could down the boardwalk that was dimly lit, and back towards the way we came.
Starting point is 00:17:16 As we sprinted down the long, straight boardwalk, I realized that we were completely visible and started to accept the reality of being caught and possibly arrested, We somehow rounded a corner, got back to the fence, and climbed over safely. Then we hopped into our car and drove away immediately. I couldn't believe we didn't get caught, as the figures chasing us were no more than a few hundred feet away when they spotted us. Still to this day, I wonder why the hell people were swimming around in a pond
Starting point is 00:17:48 in an amusement park at 1.30 in the morning. My friend had told me that kids had drowned in that pond before, so I wondered if these people were looking for evidence of that. I tried to find an article, but to no avail. My friends and I are still totally puzzled by this experience and we can't think of a very logical explanation for it at all. Just thinking about it gives me chills. About seven years ago, my husband and I were living with his parents.
Starting point is 00:18:29 His mother didn't work, so essentially we were there helping his dad pay bills that his mom and her friends would rack up. My husband's mother was friends with a couple who will call Debbie and Dave. They lived in an RV with their young son, and she agreed that for $100 they could park in front of the house and use the electricity and water. Debbie and Dave were sort of odd, but they were nice for the most part.
Starting point is 00:18:58 They'd never really been creepy, but I had never been alone with either Debbie or Dave before this encounter. Usually I would just exchange short pleasantries in passing on my way to or from work in school, and that was about it. When summer rolled around, I had a bit more free time during the day, which meant I was hanging around at the house more often. We had a big patio in the back and a nice setup with tables, chairs, and an outdoor bar. I made a habit of heading out there in the mornings to drink my coffee and smoke a bowl.
Starting point is 00:19:32 It was quiet out there, and I enjoyed not having to deal with anyone else. This morning, in particular, seemed off. When I got up to get coffee at around 8 a.m., the front door was wide open. I thought this was strange, but we had a lot of people coming in and out, so I figured whoever was the last coming or going had forgotten to fully shut the door. So I just shut the door myself when I was on my way to get coffee. And then I headed out back. I finished my coffee, smoked my bowl, and headed back inside to get a second cup of coffee.
Starting point is 00:20:08 When I stepped inside, I saw that the door was open again. When I went to shut it, I heard someone call out to me and say, Hey, hold on, I need it open. I look out the door and here comes Dave with his huge basket of clothes. Can you show me how to use the washer? he asked. Yeah, no problem, I replied. and then I took Dave to the laundry room and showed him how to use the washer and dryer. Then I tried to walk out of the room to get my second cup of coffee.
Starting point is 00:20:41 I was halfway out the door when Dave unexpectedly grabbed my arm tightly and said, Wait, where are you going? I need to talk to you. Then he went on to explain that he was going to dump Debbie and their son and leave them at my mom's house, and then came his big creepy reveal. He said, And then you can move in with me in the RV if you want. As nicely as possible, I tried to let him know that I was married
Starting point is 00:21:12 and had no interest in living in an RV with him. Oh, married? Aren't you a little young for that? He asked. Now, if that didn't really piss me off or creep me out, the next sentence out of his mouth surely did. I'm sorry, but you don't seem that serious about that guy, You flirt with me all the time, he insisted.
Starting point is 00:21:36 I was shocked. I most certainly did not. I'd barely spoken to this guy, let alone flirted with him. Being somewhat nervous, but more mad than anything, I laid into him. Initially, I was trying to be nice, but I changed my tone big time and let him know that, in a not-so-nice way, I loved my husband. I told Dave that I had never flirted with him. I also told him that his wife and son would have a way better life without him and told him to fuck off.
Starting point is 00:22:10 Debbie later asked me if I had been rude to her husband. So I let her know the whole story, at which point she rightly got pissed and kicked Dave out of the RV. I haven't seen Dave since he got kicked out. And as for Debbie and their son, when the end of the month rolled around, They drove off to Nevada. Dave, not only do I hope that I don't meet you again, but I hope Debbie and your son don't either. I can remember almost every little detail
Starting point is 00:22:47 about this crazy encounter my friend and I had in the woods when I think back on it, and it sends shivers down my spine. Back in May of 2020, when COVID first shut all of the schools down, I was a senior in high school, and one of my friends and I ended up hanging out, at their house almost every night during this time. My friend lived in a small, nice town in South Jersey
Starting point is 00:23:13 in a small neighborhood. The neighborhood was really just two side streets that connected at the top and made a rectangle. Behind it was all woods with no houses in sight for miles and miles. There was a small side trail that led to another small neighborhood, but other than that, this place felt pretty desolate. One night around mid-May, we were just chilling, and I remember seeing a skateboard in their garage. I wanted to learn how to ride one, so we grabbed it, and we went to the back connected street right at the tree line, where there was a small hill in the road so I could get some practice.
Starting point is 00:23:54 The hill was only a two-minute walk away, and I noticed a path between two houses on the back street. I was curious about what that path was for, but I kept practicing. going down the hill. I ended up catching onto the smallest pebble, and I fell and fractured my wrist, so we ended up cutting the practice after that. The following night, I brought up the path into the woods, and I asked my friend if they had ever been back there. Their response was somewhere along the lines of, yeah, I go for walks back there at least twice a week. We both thought that it would be a fun little adventure, but all I can say, now is that it ended up being the complete opposite.
Starting point is 00:24:41 We both bought small handheld flashlights, but we didn't use them until we passed both houses on each side of the trail entrance. And as I mentioned earlier, there was a side trail that led to another neighborhood, but we didn't feel like going there. So not only did we take this path instead, but we decided to go off trail and go deeper into the woods. These were two decisions that would later turn on us. After walking deeper into the woods for about five minutes, we heard what sounded like something crunching a bunch of leaves in front of us. We both stopped and shone our flashlights in the direction of the noise. We didn't see anything, so we both figured it was a deer or something. After that, we decided to go in a different direction,
Starting point is 00:25:31 away from the crunching we heard. And after another five minutes had passed, we heard the same crunching noise in front of us again. We shone our lights toward the noise again and saw nothing. And at that moment, it began to rain. We were both a little creeped out since it seemed like someone was out there with us. I wasn't sure what was going on exactly, but I had a bad feeling, so I quietly told my friend that we needed to get out of there as soon as possible. When we finally got back to the original path, we heard the same crunching noises behind
Starting point is 00:26:08 us again. It was also raining pretty hard, so we started speedwalking. As we were making our getaway, I decided to turn around and look, and I saw four flashlights that were coming right at us. Whoever this was appeared to be almost running after us. But that was when we started full on sprinting. We somehow managed to run right past the exit of the trail and back onto the road to the neighborhood. My friend and I were about to climb one of those giant fences on one of the houses to get out of their quicker, but with a fractured wrist, I wasn't going to be able to do that, so the only other way was to run back towards the lights. We cautiously headed back in that direction, and surprisingly, they weren't there.
Starting point is 00:26:57 They were gone, so we got a small sense of relief, but we were still freaked out. my friend decided to casually walk along the trail and I kept telling them to move faster then I saw four separate flashlights running again they were coming up behind my friend and I yelled at them to run and luckily they did I remember sprinting until we reached the street
Starting point is 00:27:21 and when we went around the corner I turned and saw four people standing near the entrance they were staying as still as possible but I managed to catch them in the dim street light We then ran back to my friend's house, locked the doors, and felt relieved because we knew we were finally safe. To this day, I still refuse to ever go near that trail again, but I still wonder who those people were or what their intentions were. My friend and I have talked about them and tried to come up with explanations for who they were, but we haven't been able to figure it out. If they were cops, they would have announced themselves, but why would cops be deep,
Starting point is 00:28:02 in the woods with no cop cars around. So we were pretty sure that that theory was incorrect. Whoever it was had most definitely already been down there before us and they had to be watching us for quite some time. Not a single word was spoken from any of them as they were chasing us. So I strongly believe that whoever they were, they definitely didn't have good intentions. Starting point is 00:30:26 spelled N-U-T-R-A-F-O-L dot com promo code meet. That's Nutraful.com promo code meet. It was January and I had just finished my exams at college. I was 21 and being in a long-distance relationship, I hadn't seen my boyfriend in over three months. Since I had some free time, my boyfriend and I planned to getaway trip to the mountains, as it was prime time to experience the snow. This meant that I would have to fly out to his city.
Starting point is 00:31:01 I had never been there before, so I was a bit skeptical at first because this trip had to be kept secret from my parents. Not only did they disapprove of me having a boyfriend, but they were certainly disapproving of me traveling with him. He and I have been together for five years, though, so I was determined to go. All of my friends were aware of this trip, and they were familiar with all of the necessary details. Fast forward to the day of my flight. I was seated in the window seat next to a guy who was fairly older than me.
Starting point is 00:31:37 He was probably in his late 30s. I was on my phone, and so was he. He was texting someone back and forth, and I remember thinking, how annoying it was to hear his phone's notification alerts. He gave me a very weird vibe the moment he sat next to me, but I shrugged it off as I assumed I was just unnecessarily being harsh with him. As the flight took off, I noticed no one occupied the aisle seat beside him, and I wondered why he didn't move there, because wouldn't anyone want a bit of space and privacy
Starting point is 00:32:12 if they could have it? But this man didn't move. He was glued to his seat, and I could feel his eyes on me as he looked out the window. After some time passed, he started making small talk and asking me questions. He asked me where I was from, how old I was, if I had a friend coming to pick me up at the airport, and if I lived in the city that we were flying to. I was getting some creepy vibes,
Starting point is 00:32:40 so I knew I had to be smart enough not to tell him anything too personal about myself. I lied to him and told him that I did. did indeed live in the city that we were traveling to, I figured this was my best bet to eliminate or at least minimize my chances of having him try to mislead me. I avoided him after his line of questioning and didn't peel my eyes away from my phone for a good while. He then tried to put this nice guy act on and started telling me about his job and travel plans for the upcoming weekend, but I wasn't even responsive to him at this point. I could. I can't. I can't. I can't. I can't. I can't could physically feel him coming closer to me, which freaked me out a bit, but I thought that I could
Starting point is 00:33:24 handle whatever he was up to for another 20 minutes since the flight was getting ready to land. The overhead lights were dimmed in the flight as it was nighttime, and when I happened to catch the creep in my periphery, he appeared to be relaxed, but he was grinning. And I knew that look. He was looking at me like we were in love or something. It was just truly bizarre. I just backed up to the window and started clicking photos of the view to give myself a distraction. It was then that he leaned in and said, I think you're so cute.
Starting point is 00:33:59 Can I give you my number? I froze. He was inches away from my face. No, that's weird, I promptly replied, trying not to seem too angry about it, considering he could be some psycho killer. Give me your Instagram then. He counter-offered. I was sure there was no stopping this guy, so I sternly shot back.
Starting point is 00:34:23 No, I have a boyfriend. You need to stop. He then briefly stared at me coldly, without blinking, before putting on the nice guy mask again, and he offered me a bottle of water. Before I could respond, the in-flight attendant announced that we were about to land, which was a relief since this meant I would soon be away from him. He then extended his hand toward me and whispered, Can I hold your hand? I was scared because I thought that this guy was definitely going to touch me,
Starting point is 00:34:57 whether I said it was okay or not. What? No. Are you mad? I sharply said. I kept quiet after that and internally prayed for him to leave me alone. The flight eventually landed and I hurried to get out of there. Once I was in the airport, I turned back a few times and I could see that he was gesturing towards me. He had friends on the flight, and his friends were smiling and now staring at me. I quickened my pace towards the baggage claim, and so did he and his friends.
Starting point is 00:35:33 I started texting my boyfriend frantically to let him know what was going on. He told me to stay calm and just get out of the airport as quickly as possible, without letting them catch up to me. I picked up my bags and got out of the terminal. I made it to the pickup area and was waiting to grab a ride share, with seemingly no sign of him. So I was relieved, and I was about to make it out. Just moments later, I felt somebody touch my hair. I turned around, and this creep was standing right behind me
Starting point is 00:36:04 with an ill-intentioned smile on his face. My heart was now beating so hard I thought it was going to beat right out of my chest. He offered me a ride home and said, We could take you. Don't hesitate on this. Without saying anything, I picked up my bags and walked up closer to a family with kids. I asked them if they could accompany me
Starting point is 00:36:28 to the parking lot where my Uber was waiting. I relayed the entire ordeal to them and explained how this weirdo wouldn't leave me alone. They agreed to accompany me, which I abundantly thanked them for, and they waited with me until I was gone. The weirdo kept staring at me with those cold eyes and sunken cheeks as my Uber drove away. Thankfully, he didn't follow me or anything after that.
Starting point is 00:36:55 I finally reached my boyfriend safely and the rest of the trip went smoothly. I didn't think about the incident much, and it's now all such a blur. But then, a few months later, while I was scrolling through Instagram, I noticed I got a new follow request. I opened it and my heart jumped into my mouth. It was the creepy man from the flight. He somehow found me on Instagram. A message then popped up from him, and he asked, Remember me?
Starting point is 00:37:26 I blocked him right away, and then I deleted my account on Instagram, and I haven't been back there since. As this whole situation was happening, I considered complaining about my experience with the weirdo to the flight attendant, but I didn't because I was already running late and I had an hour to reach the pickup area during rush hour. I didn't want to waste any time explaining this situation and having to be consoled by everyone.
Starting point is 00:37:51 Plus, I wasn't even sure how things would pan out if I complained because my country is a little weird about these kinds of things. I just wanted to get out of the airport as soon as possible and try to grab my ride share, which was only possible if I hurried off the flight and got out of the airport. I insist that if you're in a situation like this,
Starting point is 00:38:14 try to get to a crowded place and ask for help from someone. It's best to approach a group of friends or family. Also, make sure to do plenty of research about the city you're traveling to and know where you are going. Please stay safe out there. My friend and I had been drinking at our other friend's place, and we were pretty drunk,
Starting point is 00:38:52 At around 5 a.m., we decided to finally head home and took the bus. When we got on the first bus that we could find, we went to the back of the bus, and a guy who appeared to be around 60 immediately complimented my friend and said that they were good-looking. Now, without thinking too much about it, my friend thanked him. As we sat down, the man who was wearing a goofy hat joined us. He sat right next to me. He went on and on about how he was drunk and proceeded to ask,
Starting point is 00:39:22 my friend if he could buy a drink off of them since they had some. My friend agreed to sell the man a drink for five bucks. The man then continued asking questions as he looked for the bill in his pockets. He asked for my friend's name and which stop we were going to get off at. He would repeat the questions over and over again, even though my friend told him that they were not comfortable telling him. That was when we started to realize the actual nature of the situation. Fortunately, that was also when some younger guys decided to step in. They told the man to move and stop bothering us. He was resistant, even though he eventually obeyed. He gave the drink back to my friend and went to sit elsewhere. This interaction caused a
Starting point is 00:40:13 verbal fight between the man and a group of younger men. The younger men were also drunk and provoked the older man with some harsh insults. Even though the younger men didn't handle the situation very well, we wished them good night and told them to take care, and we hopped off of the bus. Relieved, we started walking towards the tram, waited for a bit, got on the tram, and then waited for it to leave. My friend and I were still scared, but tried to brush it off. Then the worst-case scenario happened. The old man from the bus had followed us to our tram. He got on and kept intense eye-contact with us the whole time.
Starting point is 00:40:55 He literally walked towards us with his fists clenched. I was sure he was going to hit me. So I raised my hand to protect myself. He just stood there for a moment, and I braced myself waiting for the punch. Luckily it never came. He just sat down very close to us and started talking about how he was going to kill those young men. He said that he knew where they lived. My friend and I started talking through text messages,
Starting point is 00:41:25 and we decided to get off a stop earlier than we had planned. Once we got off at the stop, we immediately started running until we reached a walkway where we could still see the stop. We stayed there silent for a moment, until we were sure the man didn't get off as well. After that, we walked through a wooded area to make sure the man wouldn't find us again. Then, finally, we made it back safely to my friend's place.
Starting point is 00:42:07 This happened five years ago, around mid-January 2020, right before the pandemic started. I'm a male, and I was 19 at the time. It was also my second year of college in Paris. I was studying the arts. Some male classmates and I decided to go to the Da Vinci exhibition at the museum with a couple of girls who were also in our class. It was an exhibition that was on display only once every few decades,
Starting point is 00:42:36 and it was advised by one of our professors to go. Anyway, on the day that we decided to go, we left school at 5 p.m. We went to a nearby bar before going to the exhibit. I had a few drinks and quickly got tipsy as I was very skinny back then, and I hadn't had anything to eat. We then took the metro and made it to the museum. We had time to see the whole thing and do some sketches of our favorite artwork.
Starting point is 00:43:04 Then I believe at around 8 p.m. we left the exhibition to go home. We all went our separate ways then. I got on the train that would drop me off at my city, and when I sat down, I realized that my phone battery was at 18%. I also realized that I had my bedside. battery bank, but no charger. I was annoyed because my phone was the only way that I could wake up in the morning since I didn't have any other alarm clock at the time. I remembered that I had to use my phone in class earlier that day for some drawing models and that I had plugged my phone in to
Starting point is 00:43:39 charge it a bit. So I sent a message in the class group chat and asked if anyone saw my charger in the classroom. Some of my classmates would stay at school for a few hours after the classes were out to study or keep working on their projects before leaving for the day. One of them replied with a picture of my charger on a table in the classroom, along with the text saying, I took it with me, I'll give it back to you tomorrow morning. I thanked them and thought to myself, okay, now how do I make sure that I'll wake up on time in the morning?
Starting point is 00:44:13 Of course, that charger was the only one that I had, since all the other ones were no longer working, and I was the only one at home who had that kind of charger, so I couldn't even use my moms or my brothers. I asked the guy who was sitting next to me if he had a charger that I could use, and if he was getting off the train anytime soon. I wanted to charge my phone for as long as possible until one of us needed to get off.
Starting point is 00:44:40 He replied, No, I don't, but check at the next station to see if their store is still open and maybe you can buy one. When we reached the next station, we could see that the store was already closed since it was right on the platform. The guy then turned to me and said, It's closed, but I have one at home that you can use. I live right next to the station.
Starting point is 00:45:03 Now, I was a bit dizzy from the alcohol that I had a few hours earlier, and I was getting tired, so my reflexes weren't really on point at that time, so I agreed. I just said, okay, instead of simply asking someone else. in my head, I thought that he'd go to his house, bring out the charger, let my phone charge for a bit with the battery bank, and then I'd give it back to him and go home, but that scenario wouldn't have made much sense. Also, this guy was supposed to get off three stations before me. When we reached his station, we both got off. It was January, so it was already completely dark outside. Once he said, follow me,
Starting point is 00:45:44 I had this horrible gut feeling that said, don't follow him, go back to the station, get back on the train, and go home. I quickly got some kind of anxiety, but I let it go, and I went and followed him. I knew deep down that what I was doing was completely naive and senseless,
Starting point is 00:46:06 but I felt like I wasn't in control. I felt totally stressed out and anxious, so I just went along with him. We exited the train station, walked to the streetcar station right next to it, and got on the street car. The fear within me was rising as we were getting there, and it kept getting worse and worse. I remember thinking, what the hell am I doing? Just leave. Something isn't right. Just go home. But for some reason I couldn't. I was petrified at this point. I just kept feeling less and less in control. I think that the guy was talking to me the whole time
Starting point is 00:46:45 and I was just nodding to whatever he was saying. I wasn't even paying attention to anything. From what I can remember, this man was much taller than me and much stronger and he had a backpack with cartoonish-looking cowheads all over it. We got off of the streetcar at the closest stop and walked up the adjacent street for about 100 to 150 meters. We then made it to his front gate.
Starting point is 00:47:13 He opened the gate with his key fob, and I stayed in the street in front of the gate as he walked through it. He turned to me and said, What are you doing? Come with me. In my head I was screaming, no. But then I crossed through the gate, and I followed him. This was the entrance of the apartment complex he lived in. After the gate, there was a long walkway leading up to a very large patio
Starting point is 00:47:38 with multiple other walkways, leading to three different buildings within the complex. It was nighttime, so I couldn't see much, even though there was lighting on the patio. We walked up to his building, which was at the very end of the patio, the furthest one from the exit of the complex. Then again, in my head,
Starting point is 00:47:59 I was visualizing him tossing the charger out through his window for me to use, so I continued to follow him, and I followed him into the building. We then went up the stairs to the second floor and went inside his apartment. Once inside, he turned on the TV and said, Take a seat. I'll be right back. Then he handed me a phone charger that was in the table drawer, and he went into the bathroom.
Starting point is 00:48:26 I sat down and thought to myself, Well, you're in deep now. And then I plugged my phone in. My phone battery was then at 9%, but my phone wasn't charging correctly. I noticed after a few seconds that the charger was ripped, and I had to tilt my phone and the charger in a specific way for it to charge. I looked around at my surroundings and noticed
Starting point is 00:48:50 that the apartment was very small and very messy. It was basically just a bedroom with a small hallway between the entrance and the main space with the door to the bathroom in the hallway. There was a corner of the room that was being used as a kitchen. The bed was the only thing that I could sit on. It was unmade, and there was a lot of unfolded clothes and clutter on the furniture and on the floor. After a minute or so, he came out of the bathroom and sat right next to me on the bed.
Starting point is 00:49:22 I still had my jacket and shoes on, and my backpack was still on my back. But I played it cool. I felt terrified inside, though. He asked me if I wanted anything to drink or eat, but I declined and said that I would be leaving soon anyway since I needed to wake up in the morning. He then said, Oh, you can stay overnight if you want.
Starting point is 00:49:46 I quickly declined. Oh, no thank you. I was sitting on the part of the bed that was closer to the nightstand, and he was between me and the hallway leading to the door. He was watching TV, but I was looking straight in front of me, just staring at the wall and not moving an inch. I was petrified. Then out of nowhere, he put his hand on my thigh.
Starting point is 00:50:11 I tend to hate physical contact, even with my own family and friends, so this was too much for me to handle, and I called my mother. She already knew that I wasn't heading home right after school because of the exhibition, and I was trying to buy some time while trying to figure something out
Starting point is 00:50:27 so that he wouldn't try to prevent me from leaving. So I was talking with my mother, just telling her how my day was and talking about my time at the museum, and I told her that I was on my way home. I managed to keep my composure so that she couldn't tell something was wrong. The last thing I wanted was to worry her, even though I was panicking, and I didn't want that guy to act up even more. After a few minutes, my mom cut me off and told me that she was getting sleepy. She said that she was going to bed, so she said good night and hung up.
Starting point is 00:50:59 I thought to myself. Shit, and then I looked to my right at the guy and he still had his hand on my thigh. That was when I realized that guy was straight up touching himself while he was staring at me. He was doing this while I was on the phone with my mother. I locked eyes with him for two seconds, and suddenly my heart started racing. I was now more terrified than ever, so I almost started crying. I could barely breathe. I then called my dad and thankfully he picked up the phone.
Starting point is 00:51:31 My parents aren't together anymore and I was living with my mom so my father didn't know about my visit to the museum I did just like I did with my mother and I told my dad about my day and what I saw at the exhibition. I kept finishing most of the sentences with dad so that the guy knew who I was talking to
Starting point is 00:51:49 and I was hoping this would prevent him from doing anything crazier. Obviously because I was so scared I was unable to talk without breathing heavily so at some point my dad addressed this and asked why I was breathing like that. I just told him I was walking fast to catch my train. Then I said, okay, dad, now I'm going to have to run so I don't miss the train.
Starting point is 00:52:13 If I do, the next one won't be here for a while. Don't hang up, my dad said. I agreed, so I kept him on the phone, but the guy didn't know that I ended the call. I then quickly got up without unplugging the charger. It unplugged when I got up and I started to, walking to the exit. Then I hurriedly said, I gotta go to the guy. I pressed the door knob to open the door, but it was locked. I didn't even notice that he had locked it after we walked in. I was now panicking even more, but the guy got up, walked over to me, unlocked the door and opened it. Then he said,
Starting point is 00:52:53 come back any time, and licked my neck. He had his arm extended over the opening of the doorway, so I had to bend down to walk beneath it and get out of his apartment. He then spanked me as I was walking away. Once I got outside of the apartment, I began running. I ran down the stairs, even skipping a few steps, and then I ran out of the building, ran across the patio, and all the way to the gate. I was finally out of the complex, but I kept running until I reached the streetcar stop.
Starting point is 00:53:26 I was just hoping that the guy wasn't following me or that no one that he, he might know was looking for me or coming after me. Thankfully, the streetcar arrived right when I reached the stop. Once I was on the streetcar, I pulled out my phone and my father was still on the call. I told him, okay, I'm on the train now. I'll let you know when I'm home. He told me to be careful on the way and that he would be waiting for my message. Then he hung up. From that moment, I felt relieved, but I couldn't help but wonder.
Starting point is 00:53:58 What if I didn't have the idea of calling my parents? And what if that guy escalated the situation? What if he never let me out? What if someone else was in there with him? Literally anything could have happened to me. And being on his turf, he could have done anything to me. Ever since this happened, I only trust my gut. If I sense anything is fishy, I will definitely listen to my body,
Starting point is 00:54:23 pay attention to the signs, and of course, never talk to strangers on public transit. It was almost 9.30 p.m. by the time I was almost 9. on the train that would drop me off in the city, and I made it home by 10.30. Everyone was asleep. I let my dad know that I made it home, and he responded and said, good night. My phone battery was still very low, slightly over 20%. I went to bed, but didn't manage to fall asleep for hours. I woke up in the morning, went to school, and my classmate brought me my phone charger. I went on with my day, and I never told anyone about what happened, until I finally decided to tell one of my closest friends just a year later.
Starting point is 00:55:03 When I think about it now, I realize how naive I was in this situation. But it was truly the scariest thing I've ever experienced.
