Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to Wednesday One Shots, the bi-weekly series where we share a bonus story with you in the middle of the week. This time we have a story from an author named K. Have you ever seen a face that just sticks with you? I have the worst memory, but for some reason, I vividly remember this encounter that I had with a strange man when I was 15. I had just moved to Kansas City, Missouri to live with my mom. Kansas City was huge compared to the small town I came from. I was going to Northeast High School,
Starting point is 00:00:56 and the bus stop was right in front of our apartment building. One day I got up early and was standing at the bus stop with the other kids, and the bus pulled up. As I stepped onto the bus, I remember that all of the kids from the bus stop were giving me this weird look. And I also noticed hardly anyone else got onto the bus, but I ignored it and took a seat. About ten minutes into the bus ride, I realized the school bus I had gotten on was not going in the direction of my school. The bus I was on was for a completely different school. I realized then that the kids who were looking at me weirdly were probably wondering why I boarded a bus
Starting point is 00:01:42 that was going to a different school. I really wish they would have said something. So, I got off the bus, and I could have made it easy on myself by just going inside the school and telling them that I had mistakenly got on the wrong bus, but I have such bad social anxiety and I felt like I was at a zoo because of how crowded it was.
Starting point is 00:02:05 Instead, I decided to overcomplicate things by walking back home, even though I didn't really know the route. I then began my journey walking, and mind you, it was still a little dark since it was so early. It was about 7.30 in the morning. I also didn't have a cell phone, so I couldn't even call my mom. After about 30 minutes of walking, I was overcome with the strange feeling that someone was watching me.
Starting point is 00:02:33 I turned around, and there was a man not that far behind me, smiling creepily, which made me very uncomfortable. Another ten minutes went by, and he was still going in the same direction I was. So I decided to slow down and let him pass me so that I could at least see where he was in front of me. My plan worked, and he slowly passed me. I kept my pace slow to allow him to get ahead of me a little bit
Starting point is 00:03:02 and then picked my pace back up. As we continued walking in the same direction, he kept looking at me over his shoulder with this creepy smile. I never smiled back or made eye contact with him. He then turned around, still smiling, and he walked backwards while facing me for quite some time. I had had enough at that point. so I cut across a field and ended up losing him, but I still couldn't shake the feeling of
Starting point is 00:03:33 being watched. An entire hour had passed by this point, and I spotted a little pub across the street. I stopped there and went inside to use the bathroom before continuing my journey. It didn't occur to me to ask them to use their phone to call my mom, so I left the pub and started walking again. After another ten minutes had passed, my feeling of being watched, grew even more. So, I turned around, and it was the same man, behind me again. I picked up my pace, and I felt water welling up in my eyes, as I didn't want to be murdered, kidnapped, or whatever, by this guy. I was turning down all kinds of streets, cutting through alleys, and circling, but no amount of rerouting deterred this guy from my path.
Starting point is 00:04:25 He remained behind me with that creepy smile on his face. the entire time. This was when I took a chance to get help from a stranger. I made my way to a neighborhood with nice-looking houses and just started knocking on doors. After a few unsuccessful knocks,
Starting point is 00:04:43 an older woman finally answered her door. I was out of breath, frantic, and saying that I needed help getting home. She did help me. When we got into her car, she started to drive me home. As we passed the man,
Starting point is 00:04:58 I made sure to make stern eye contact with him as a you didn't get me send-off. But he just continued to smile like he had been doing for hours at this point. As I did this, I got a closer look at his face. His eyes looked empty. Thankfully, I did make it home safely. I have no idea what his plans were, but to the weird smiling man who followed me for hours. Please, let's not ever meet again.
