Life in Colour.
Well, hello, lovelies.
Welcome back to Life in Color.
Today we're talking about planning your spring, summer 26 wardrobe.
Now, it may not feel like it in Sydney today.
Like we had 35 degrees yesterday and now it's back down to 18.
But that's not the point.
I want you to be prepared so that when the warm weather comes,
that you feel like, you know, exactly what you're going to be wearing, how you're going to be putting outfits together,
and that you're not going into this feeling like, oh, I have no idea.
Like, it's really easy in the autumn, winter months.
Obviously, we're wearing chunkier jumpers and we're covering up a bit more.
And some people much prefer to wear things that are sort of a bit baggier and looserance.
Not that you can't wear those things in spring summer, you absolutely can.
But for some, it can be really daunting to try and figure out what actually to wear in those warmer seasons.
you might be a little bit more self-conscious.
And I am here to help because I want to make sure you're planning out your wardrobe,
your clothes, your outfits, your makeup even, to make sure that you really enjoy these warmer months.
Now, for me personally, spring and summer are my favorite months of the year and then my
favorite clothes to wear.
So I cannot wait.
But I've got nine tips for you today.
And we're going to go through them one by one to make sure that you can plan your spring summer,
26 wardrobe, so that you actually really enjoy.
enjoy getting dressed in the mornings. It's not a chore and it's easy and effortless. I don't want you to feel
that it's a chore. There is nothing worse than getting up in the morning and thinking, oh my gosh,
what earth am I going to wear today? I'll just wear the same old boring thing. You think it's
boring, but you're doing it because you don't know what else to do. So we've got nine things.
So let's get to it and get straight into it. Number one, I want you to audit what you wore on repeat last summer.
Now, if you need something to help you do this, go to your camera roll or ask your partner or your kids or your best mate to have a look at their camera roll and see what you've been wearing and get them to send you the photos.
I can guarantee you that you're going to see a pattern of some of the things that you will have been wearing.
So pull out what you actually wore on repeat last spring and summer.
That is your actual blueprint.
And they're the pieces that are the things that you obviously really enjoyed wearing.
Now, I want you to have a look at it.
and find out why you enjoyed wearing it though, because there's two sides to this.
It can be that you enjoyed wearing it because it was safe, it was comfortable, it was easy to
wear, or there are things that you wore on repeat because you absolutely loved them.
And so you wore them on repeat because they made you feel good.
You felt a bit sexy.
You felt a bit feminine in them.
You felt a bit powerful in them.
You felt stylish in them.
Whatever it is that comes up when you look at those clothes.
I'm going to give you an example.
I don't know if you remember, but last year I bought a set from Seed and it was my best pink ever
in shorts and a matching top. And it reminded me of a set that I'd had when I was much,
much younger that I absolutely loved when I was, I think I must have been about eight and then when
we were living in Brisbane. And I absolutely loved it. And I, every time I wore that outfit,
I just felt so good. Now, did I start to keep it for best? Yes, I actually mentioned that in a
podcast episode earlier this year. So I started to wear it more and more often. And I just felt so good
when I was wearing it. And that is something that I am absolutely determined to do this year is to
wear more of the things that make me personally feel good, not saving them for best. So I want you to
sit down, have a look at the clothes within your wardrobe, get a piece of paper or just use the notes
app on your phone and write down, what are the things that you wore the most, what are the things that you wore
the least and why. That is a really, really important thing to do. So doing an audit of what you wore.
Now, I don't know if you're like me, I actually have to swap my summer and winter wardrobes over.
And I find it's actually really helpful to do that because then you can look at things and you take
them out of like, I take them out of my container. And I look at them and I'm like, oh, you know what?
I actually really love that. I didn't wear that last year. I'd like to wear that this year.
Or I look at something and go, oh, I don't know why I kept that. I didn't wear it last year, didn't
where at the year before, maybe I've been keeping it for a while, but I don't, I don't really know
why I've kept it and I'm going to let it go this particular season. So it's a really good way
to actually get things out of your wardrobe that you've been holding onto for a while as well
when you've actually got a changeover of the seasons as well. Number two, I want you to pick a
feeling and then a focus. Now, that's going to sound like a little bit woo-woo and contradictory and
I totally understand it.
But I want you to choose one or two words for how you want to feel in your clothes this season.
It could be fresh, effortless, polished, chic, playful, boho, romantic, powerful,
powerful, edgy, dramatic, bold, comfortable.
That's what I want you to do.
I want you to actually think about how you want to feel in your clothes.
So for me this year, if I had to do it,
I actually want to feel a little bit more chic in the clothes that I'm wearing.
this year and I also want it to bring joy when I'm wearing the outfits. I actually want to feel
really joyful when I'm wearing them. Joy is a word that I use a lot in my personal life and I use
it for like my word of the year, stuff like that. So just have a think of those things of how you actually
want to feel. So you can do one or you can do two, but I want you to pick those feelings of how you
want to feel. They are going to be your guidepost and I want you to write them down on a postnote,
put them on your wardrobe door, inside your wardrobe door, on your mirror in your bathroom
where you're getting ready. I want it to be a constant reminder for you of how you're actually
wanting to feel so that then when you're defaulting, you'll look at it and go, oh, actually,
for me, I'd be like, do I feel a bit chic in this? Maybe not. I feel a bit frumpy. Okay,
what can I change about the outfit then to make it feel a bit more chic rather than frumpy? Or is it
just that this outfit just doesn't work for me or the particular top doesn't work for me anymore?
or I'm trying to make something work that maybe used to work in my 20s or 30s that doesn't work for me now.
Then I want you to choose a focus for the spring and summer to come.
So when I'm talking about spring and summer in this episode,
I'm purely talking about the weather seasons of the year.
I'm not talking about color analysis.
So I want you to choose a focus like I want to wear more color this spring and summer.
Or I want to nail a signature summer outfit formula so that when someone sees me,
you know, if you think of like Megan Markle, if you think of like the Princess of Wales,
if you think of certain celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Garner, that kind of thing,
they have signature outfit formulas that they repeat again and again and again because they
know that it works for them and they just change out the top, they change out the jeans,
they change out the shoes, they change out the accessories.
But they know that that particular outfit formula works for them really, really well.
Or you want to finally find that.
a styling piece that just stands out in your wardrobe that is your statement piece for the
entire spring summer and that that's what you're going to mold a lot of your outfits around.
It could be like a hot pink blazer.
It could be an amazing even like swimsuit that you want to wear if you're going on holiday.
That kind of is thing.
I want you to think about a feeling and then a focus.
Then number three, keep it to three goals maximum.
So when we're talking about planning out our wardrobes, we all like to have goals at the start of the year.
I actually think it's great to have goals throughout the year.
And I think when you come into a new, like, when I say new season, I think of warmer seasons and colder seasons in the year.
So obviously, we've come out of the cold season of autumn winter.
We're going into the warmer seasons.
This is in the southern hemisphere, obviously, of spring and summer.
If you're listening to this and you are in the northern hemisphere, just reverse everything I'm saying, everything I'm saying.
is still applicable to you. Just obviously know that you're working towards wardrobe to wear
in colder months. We're working towards wardrobes that we're wearing for warm months. So I want you
to keep it at three goals maximum. I want you to write them down, whether you're a pen and paper person,
whether you are a voice note to yourself person, whether like post-it notes or you're putting it
in as a reminder on your phone to flash up, whatever it is. These are going to help you keep
accountable. So for example, here are three goals that you could potentially set for
yourself. You could set one color goal of trying a new shade in your color palette if you know
your color palette or trying a new shade of color, even if you don't know your color. Say that there's
so much red out there at the moment and you're so drawn to red. You've always been a little bit like,
oh, I'm not sure. Just try a little piece and I want you to wear it on the top half of your body
because I always find that when someone's
trying a new color. One of the ways to really know if you really love and enjoy wearing it is like
have a tank top, have a singlet top, have a t-shirt. Normally it's a smaller investment if you're doing
something like that, especially if you're getting it from Big W, Kmart, Best and Less, all of those
kinds of places. And you can absolutely get some great little tops and tanks and things and t-shirts
like that. When I first started wearing the color yellow, it would have been three summers ago.
This is exactly how I did it. I bought one yellow t-shirt.
from Kmart and that was how I tested how often I was going to wear it before investing in
something more expensive or investing in more of that color.
Safe to say, I loved wearing that color, a lot more of that color and has now come into my wardrobe,
but that is how I tested it.
So that is a color goal that you can go for trying a new color if you know your palette,
trying a new color, even if you don't know your palette, just trying a color that you love
that you're drawn to and wear it on the top half of your body.
Okay, the second goal is a wardrobe goal.
So you want to fill one specific gap in your wardrobe.
Everyone generally has something that they're looking for or that is missing within their
wardrobe at any given time.
Sometimes you might have a wardrobe that is working so perfectly for you.
I'm going to give myself as an example for this to explain it to you.
I have two things that are missing in my wardrobe at the moment.
I feel like I'd like some more skirts.
I also feel like I need some more summer dresses that have sleeves.
That is the goal I am going to go for.
I want to add, say, two new skirts to my wardrobe,
plus two new dresses that have like a cap sleeve
so that I can wear them to events at school.
I've got things coming up for like year 12, things like that.
So I just want something that's a little bit more modest
than the strappy dresses that I have.
So that's my wardrobe goal.
So I've got my color goal.
And then I've got a wardrobe goal of wanting to add these things in.
It could be for you that you have a gap for a go-to sandal.
You don't have a go-to sandal that you want to wear, and so that's something that you want
to add into your wardrobe.
It could be that you want a new summer handbag, and you'd like to add that into your
wardrobe.
It could be that you have a lot of t-shirts, but not a lot of blouses, and so you'd like
to add a couple of pretty blouses into your wardrobe.
Just think about the things that you would like.
And if you're really stuck, just look at fashion on Instagram or even just go to Pinterest and type in,
you know, classic outfits or boho outfits or romantic outfits. And you can, if you're like my age,
you can put in like mature aid because then it won't give you just like 20 year olds. You actually start
to see things that maybe you would want to wear rather than what you used to wear, say,
in your 20s. So that is your wardrobe goal. Now, the last goal that I would like you to do is one habit.
So you have a color goal, a wardrobe goal, and a habit goal.
Now, that could be planning your outfits for the week on a Sunday.
Now, I can literally hear some of you groaning saying, I'm not a Virgo, I'm not that
organized.
I'm never going to do that.
I'm not talking about, like, I'm going to go on a tangent here.
David Beckham, who he has the most amazing wardrobe, but he plans out his outfits on
a weekend and he literally gets everything out.
Now, I know that obviously he also has the money to have multiple things.
I get that. Probably doesn't necessarily have to do as much washing as what some of us do,
but he then puts it all on a hanging rack. It is ready to go for his week. That's it. It's done.
It's something that he doesn't have to think about. Now, I know that not everybody is going to
want to do that. What I would say, though, just about everyone has a diary, whether it's an electronic
diary or it's a physical pen and paper diary. Have a look at what you have on for that week
and then think about what you need to do.
So I'm going to go through this really with you, really briefly, to give you an idea.
I have a pen and paper diary.
So say on Sunday I looked at this week.
Yesterday I was getting my hair done and doing a few running around like errands.
And so I knew it was going to be hot.
I knew that I was going to wear just an easy, breezy skirt and a tank done.
That's what I was aiming for, just a really easy outfit.
it. Today is a workday for me, so I like to dress a bit more on my work days. So, and the weather
has changed. So I've gone for a long sleeve like heart tucked in cardigan, and I've got a nice
pair of jeans on. Tomorrow is also another workday for me. Again, it's a little bit chilly. I'm
going to go for my long denim skirt and I'm probably going to put like a lightweight knit top on it.
Thursday, again, very similar kind of day. It's a work day for me. So then I might go for like a pair of
jeans or my uniclobe barrel pants and then I'm going to put a shirt with it. Friday is a little bit
more dressed down, running around. So therefore, it's a little bit more of a casual outfit.
So with the weather, again, still being a bit dodgy, I might try and go for a walk. So maybe
Lorna Jane tights a long sleeve top and then I'll put my gap hoodie over the top.
That is just a very basic idea and you can make notes in your diary about what you're thinking so
that you're not having to stand in front of your wardrobe. I can guarantee you, it would take
you 15 minutes almost just to do that on a Sunday compared to standing in front of your wardrobe
for 15 minutes trying to figure out what to do. Now, if that's too much for you to do it like that,
the other option you can do is go to your wardrobe, look at some outfits and literally hang them up
or lay them on your bed and just take a photo and see what outfits that you would like. And then
once you start doing that, you actually build up a catalog of photos of outfits on your phone
that you can then go, oh, what should I wear today? And you can flick through the photos on
your phone and then that actually gives you an outfit to wear without actually thinking about it
because you've already created it in your wardrobe. So that's your three goals. Now, with those got,
scrap that. Okay. Number four, now you have those goals, you need to make them a little bit
measurable, but also a little bit fun and playful. Now, I promise you, I'm not trying to make this
sound like really hard work. It's just about making sure that a little bit of,
little bit of planning, just like how you meal plan, it is no different to planning your outfits
and your wardrobe so that you're not getting stuck and wearing the same things again and again and
again. It just takes that little bit of time and effort to go into planning your wardrobes to make
sure that the season works really well. And if you think, if you just spend, say, an hour doing some
of this on a weekend and then it's done, you set yourself up for six months. It's done.
And wouldn't you want to do that rather than standing in front of your wardrobe thinking,
I have no idea what to wear. I'm just going to wear the same thing. Oh my gosh, I've got nothing.
When in fact, I'm sure you have clothes in there that you probably maybe haven't worn as often because
you don't know how to wear them. But by putting these outfits together and bits and pieces,
this helps you align your wardrobe a lot more to what you actually want it to be.
Now, one quick thing before I keep going on number four, if everything I've shared so far is hitting home,
I've got 10 spots open for private one-to-one sessions where we go so much deeper on exactly
all of this and I can help you plan out your spring and summer wardrobe together in an hour
and it can be done.
So the link is in the show notes.
Go and have a look now while you're thinking about it.
But right now, let's get back to the remainder because we're only up to number four.
Number four is wearing more color can be a little bit vague.
And you want to make this a little bit fun for yourself.
and also help you keep yourself accountable to the goals that you're setting.
So it can be things more like wear a non-neutral top three days this week.
And you can have like little post-it notes with red, blue, green.
And you can put them up.
And then once you've worn them, you can literally tear them off the wall or you can tick it and then you know that you've done it.
You've got an idea of the colors that are already in your wardrobe.
So something like that should be really easy to do.
Or it can be style five new outfits.
from pieces that I already own. Again, you can have a checklist that you can tick off and it can be
outfit one, outfit two, three, four, five and then next to it, you can write exactly the outfit
that it could be. So, for example, five new outfits. You could take a dress that you've never put
a denim jacket over the top of and wear it like that. You could take a top that you have only ever
worn with a denim skirt and put it with a white maxi skirt. You could take a really pretty nice
blouse and put it with a pair of jeans.
You could take a silky satiny kind of top that you would normally only wear to work
and dress that up with a pair of jeans and wear it out to dinner.
You could even take a strappy dress and put a top underneath it if you wanted to.
Say that if you're working in a preschool and you can't wear something strappy,
you could put a top underneath it.
There are so many different things that you can do to create new outfits with what you've
already got because you don't just want to buy something and then wear it one way with
one item in your wardrobe. I can guarantee you you're going to get a lot more longevity and use
out of the clothes if you can actually mix and match them a lot more and create a lot more outfits out
of what you've actually got. And then you will actually feel like you've got a lot more variety
purely by mixing and matching and doing more things with the items that you currently own rather
than feeling that you need to constantly be buying new things. Number five, set a mini shopping brief.
So talking about those gaps in your wardrobe.
wardrobe from when you did your audit, you want to write down the things that you actually know
that you need to fill this spring and summer. And that includes those things that you would like
to potentially fill the gap and wear, like say how I mentioned about skirts or about dresses.
The reason that you do this, it keeps you on brief. So when you go to the shops and you're
walking around, say you're wanting to buy some really beautiful summer dresses and you find a
great pair of jeans. Well, you've got four pairs of jeans at home. And yeah, they're fantastic and they're
great. But that's not what you're looking for. You're not looking for jeans. You don't need jeans.
You don't need to buy any more. Dresses is what you're after. So by having this mini shopping brief
that you've set for yourself, it keeps you on track. I do not need any more shorts. I might need
one pair of denim shorts because the ones that I bought from Country Road, when I got them out of that
container, I put them on. I was like, oh, they are a little bit snug. They're a little bit more.
tight fitting than what I remembered, silently cursing myself that I hadn't bought the next size up
and the other one because there's something I'm learning at the moment with things that I really,
really love to wear can be quite handy, especially like for everyday things like denim shorts,
to have two sizes so that if I'm having more of an endobloaty day, I can still wear them,
but I just go up a size. So when you're writing that brief, write down, say, three to five items
and write down the colors and the fabrics and your budget so that it stops impulse buying
and it keeps your wardrobe cohesive and you're not buying more things that are going to come
into your wardrobe, A, that you've already got that you don't need, but secondly, that are going to
go in there, keep the tags on, then you never actually wear it.
There is nothing worse than having those items in your wardrobe.
And we've all had them, me included, where you buy it, and then you look at it and you try it on,
you're like, oh, I really liked that, but I don't know what to wear it with.
I don't really like it.
I don't know what to do with it.
It goes back in and the tags stay on it.
Every time you open the wardrobe,
it's like this little reminder of you haven't worn me yet, you haven't worn me yet.
And I'd have that with a particular dress in my wardrobe that I bought before.
I knew my colours and all that kind of thing.
And I'm just like, oh, I don't know what to do with you, but you're just going to stay there.
So set yourself itself a mini shopping brief and I promise you it will keep you on track.
So it stops those impulse buys and it stops you from buying things that you really just,
Don't need. Okay. Number six, and this is a big one. This could be an entire podcast episode on
its own. I'm not going to go into a huge amount of detail on here because I actually think it does need
its own podcast episode. It's a little bit more of those tough love ones. You know you love those ones from me,
but I do them for a reason because I think so many of you actually need to hear it. I want you to build
your wardrobe and the outfits that you have for your real life, not an imaginary one. And I know that
that sound might sound a bit harsh. Again, I'm not going to go into it on here, but for those of you
that this relates to, you will know what I'm talking about. I want you to think about what your
spring and summer actually holds for you. Is it school runs, beach walks, holidays, dinners out,
holiday parties, work functions, events, going into the office all of the time and being a little
bit more corporate. Or are you running after toddlers? I want you to think about what your
spring and summer actually looks like in your diary, and I want you to set your goals that we've
talked about earlier, around those occasions so the outfits actually get worn. Because if you don't,
you're going to end up with a wardrobe that is totally misaligned with the life that you're leading.
And that is one of the biggest precursors to why you don't actually enjoy wearing your clothes or
why you don't feel it works now. I know it sounds a bit heavy. And I get a little bit on my high horse
on these things because I see this happening a lot.
Like I said, I might even make that an episode for next week because I think it's something
that we really need to delve into together.
Okay.
Number seven is do a check-in at the halfway mark.
So I want you to put a date in your diary, say mid-summer, like say it's after Christmas
and everything's come down, you've put the Christmas decorations away, and you're just sort of
easing yourself into January a bit. You haven't started doing any of the back-to-school stuff.
So say like second week in Jan. And I want you to do a review. I want you to look at what's working,
what needs adjusting, and give yourself permission to tweak something if it's not working. I want
this to be fun for you. I don't want you to think this is another thing that you're going to
fail at or that isn't going to work for you. I want you to keep the joy and the happiness so that you actually
really enjoy the outfits. There are going to be some days that you're just at home and you're
slobbing around, not doing very much, and you pull on your comfiest pair of shorts and a white t-shirt.
I'm not saying you're necessarily going to find joy in those outfits, even though I do because
they're really comfortable. I'm like, oh, this is just like so comfy. But the other day is like,
I want you to really enjoy it, like the outfit that I've got on today. I am loving it.
I really loved the outfit that I had on yesterday. It was little things like,
The skirt that I had on yesterday is a short, rayon skirt.
I feel really feminine and sexy and pretty.
It's things like that that I want you to be looking for.
Today, I feel a little bit more chic and a little bit more sophisticated
in what I'm wearing, a little bit more sexy because the V that I've got on is a bit more low-cut.
So they're the kinds of things that I want you to do.
So do that mid-year review and have a look at your wardrobe and continue to refine it
and see what's working and see what's not.
But before we move on to the last few tips that I've got for you, I just want to tell you a little bit more about the one-to-one sessions with me because I do think that there are quite a few of you out there that actually need just to have one of these sessions to help you get on track so that you know exactly what you're wanting to wear rather than feeling lost. And I know so many of you feel lost even when you're staring looking at your wardrobes, which is a really awful feeling. So in a session with me, we would go through exactly like what you're
your goals are for spring and summer, what kinds of things you've got in your wardrobe,
your gaps. I would help you then put outfits together, give you some outfit formulas.
We can talk about makeup. We can talk about colors. We can talk about all the things that you want to.
This is an hour for you for you, for us to go through anything and everything that you would
like to go through for your wardrobe just to get you back on track and feeling good in the
clothes that you wear. So this is the kind of thing that changes how you get dressed every
single morning. And I promise you it makes such a difference to the clarity. You'll open your wardrobe
and you'll be like, right, that doesn't work for me and I know why. This does work for me and I know why I need to
buy more of this because that's what's missing. So that's what I can help you do. Now, it's $199 for an
hour session with me. The link is in the show notes. If you have a question, feel free to just DM me on
Instagram. I am always there and we can have a chat. But anyway, for now, let's get back to it because we have
two more to go and then I've given you everything that you need to plan out your spring and summer
wardrobe for 2026. Now number eight is have one standout piece and let it do the talking. I'm talking
about a great dress. It doesn't have to be a bold color. It can be a color. It can be a bright
color, a bold color if that's your thing. It can be more of a soft and a muted thing. It can be a
light pastel thing. It can be any color that you like. It can be a color that you like. It can be a
can be a statement handbag, it can be a really lovely necklace that you just love wearing with
everything. That statement item piece can bring so many outfits together and it is just the
final editing touch. And basically the rest of the outfit is really simple and you just build around
it. So like I said, it can be a skirt, it can be a blouse, it can be a shirt, it can be a blazer,
it can be anything that you like it to be, but have one standout piece.
that you absolutely love.
Trust me, it makes all the difference.
It's not you're going to wear it every day,
but that statement standout piece,
when you are struggling to figure out what to wear,
you know that you can rely on that.
So you will go for that.
My one little hint, it has to be a color.
And I say that with love
because a statement piece is something that you want to feel amazing in it,
not that you wouldn't feel amazing in neutral,
but I want it to be something really special to you
and something that you love wearing, and generally I find that that is a color rather than a neutral.
So a neutral is more complementary.
The color is the star.
Okay, last thing.
Add one thing just for joy.
Now, you know I love the word joy and you know that that means a lot to me with getting dressed
and bringing joy into my client's wardrobes is a very, very big thing for me.
It can be a favorite print, a favorite accessory, a favorite color, favorite pair of shoes,
like a kitten heel or a high hill when you haven't normally worn them. It can be a colored pair of
shoes. It can be a statement necklace. You name it. It can be any of those things. But effortless and
easy doesn't have to mean boring. In my world, it certainly doesn't mean boring. It just means
that you're actually putting your outfits together in a way that isn't hard for you because so many
women feel like it's really, really hard to put outfits together. But once you get the hang of it,
I promise you it makes all of the difference in the world to getting ready every day,
even when you have kids around or teenagers around or whatever you've got going on in the mornings.
Everyone needs a little bit of peace and quiet in the mornings, and we don't always have that
when we're getting ready.
So having all of this pre-planning and work done, I would suggest writing all of this down,
sticking it on your wardrobe or on your walking wardrobe or in your bathroom,
wherever you get ready, just to make your life a little bit more easily.
Okay, my lovelies, go and try.
that this week. Let me know how you get on. And if you've booked a one-to-one session with me,
I cannot wait to meet you and chat you through and get a wardrobe working for you for
this spring and summer. Take care. I will speak to you next week. Bye.
