Life Uncut podcast acknowledges the traditional custodians of country throughout Australia
and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their elders, past and
present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
This episode is recorded on Gadigal land of the Aurora Nation.
Hi guys, and welcome back to another episode of Life Uncut. This is our radio edition where
we package up all the best parts of the week of radio.
You guys are really pioneers of young creatives in this country.
Don't make it weird now.
It's not weird.
Please continue.
You guys have, like, reared me.
I'm like a little baby bird.
You vomit success and opportunity into my little gullet.
You go, he's an influencer deal.
He's coming open for our live show.
Actually, if you ever walk into the studio where we record this show,
it's just Brit and I perched over Mitch's mouth vomiting into it.
That's how we create the radio show.
You've made me viscerally uncomfortable, Mitch,
because all I can think about is our lips coming together
and vomiting.
We have kissed.
We actually have kissed.
We have kissed in front of thousands of people
at the live show.
We did.
Guys, can we take a serious note before we get into it?
For everyone that has followed along the journey,
our producer, Tony, is leaving.
She's not going to be on the show anymore.
The producer of the radio show of The Pickup.
Jump on a microphone, producer Tony.
Number five, baby.
Some people might not realise because a lot of people
who listen to the podcast might think that Keisha
produces our radio show as well.
But producer Keisha is obviously across the podcast
who we adore.
But then we have another producer and that is
It's Toni Kipper and she does our radio show
and this is her very last day with us and we are very sad.
This is where you say you think something nice, Toni.
She's about to cry.
I'm about to cry.
That's why.
Oh, no, that's great crying.
That's what I do to you guys daily.
I'm like, if you cry, it's great.
It's good radio.
We love you.
We could not do the show without you, could we, girls?
Well, it's going to be a real problem.
Well, yeah, contractually we have to.
No, we, look, we will be fine without you.
No, it's genuinely a really sad day because I guess there's so much
that goes on behind the scenes that people don't see, right?
They hear the hour that we put out or whatever else.
Oh, my God, you actually watched the TV.
Because we want so much happiness for you and we want the best for you.
And if that is without us, so be it.
No, if you guys aren't, like, you're not allowed to be strangers.
I won't allow it.
I'll just stalk you from afar then.
No, we won't.
I'll rock up to your houses.
But this is the thing, and I think from the outset, you know,
obviously the three of us work so closely together but you know we work so closely with you we work
so closely with people like Keisha and it's like losing you it would be like you're our Keisha
equivalent do you know what I mean and like people who you know have known the podcast for a really
long time have heard us mention you in little bits and pieces but like I don't think that we've ever
had the opportunity to really talk about the fact that it's so hard to find someone who produces but
also who you can connect with on a friendship level and the thing about Tony is that Tony you
have like catered your the way in which you tend to us throughout this past year like we all have
different personalities and we all require different kinds of like taking care of when
we're having bad days and you are truly incredible at being like okay Britt's in a bad mood what does
she need and you will hey why is it me you'll tend to Britt in her special way and then for me you'll
do it as well and it's like you're such an empathetic person but you're so good at catering
and taking care of everybody else around you.
But it's not just that.
It's trying to find someone that you trust as well
and you're in a circle.
And that's why I'd like you to sign this NDA
that I've just drawn up here.
Look at my NDA.
Don't talk about us, okay?
Okay, sign.
Also, I love that your examples were Laura and Britt
having bad moods, insinuating,
I've never once had a bad mood.
No, Mitch, you're always in a bad mood.
Tony's just learned how to be on a constant management plan
with Mitch because he's always grumpy.
Who has, and be honest,
and let's be like really sweet for a second.
Who do you like most?
It's been your favourite.
I'd leave the fifth.
I've signed an NDA already.
Yeah, she signed the okay, okay, so she can't talk any further.
We're going to miss you, but we want the nothing but the best for you, truly.
And you're going to slay it, whatever you do next.
And we'll be here when you come crawling back.
And I will.
Thank you very much.
Keisha, do you need an assistant?
At Tony Kipper on Instagram.
Can we plug her?
Am I allowed to do that?
Yeah, Tony Kipper.
Sure, go for it.
Tony doesn't care.
She's like, I don't want random people who don't know me following my Instagram, but sure.
Well, I do love that part of the producing for the last week of the show,
like one of the things you guys did do all together behind my back
was trigger my triggers.
Not a lot triggers me, right, but there is one thing that has started to
and you guys really played on my weakness.
Well, look, Brit, exposure therapy is a great way in which you can overcome
and deal with trauma.
Also, secondly, it's time of year where The Bachelor is on
and it's time to face your fears.
It's been long enough.
Okay, thanks.
Says someone that won The Bachelor.
I know.
Sorry, but I do it with love.
I just want you to grow and move past it and leave it all behind.
Speaking of trauma, Mitch.
Speaking of real-life trauma, a story in the news this week
that you may have heard is Billie Eilish who was forced out.
She came out as bisexual in a weird way.
The press kind of made her do it.
We talk about that in the show and I share some thoughts
that have, you know, triggered me on my five-year coming out anniversary.
Yeah, and also, Mitch, I think it's, like you said,
it's for you not thinking about the fact of what happened five years ago
but it's like being so proud of yourself for where you are today
and how much has changed in your life and that you're at a point now
where you can be so authentically you and it's not a big deal anymore
and the people who are around you love you for it,
I think is something to really celebrate.
Yeah, and it's easy for me to say because I'm not gay.
So like I don't have that experience but I think it would be nice
if you can change the way you look at it and the perspective
in terms of like that time was a bad time and I didn't enjoy it
and I didn't love coming out to the point of maybe looking at it
like it was the start of the next chapter of your life
where you were authentically you.
Yeah, it's funny you say that.
Like before I came out, I thought, oh, my God, everyone from this point that I meet, my new relationships will know me as Mitch, the out gay man.
But then you guys have only ever known me as Mitch, the out gay man, right?
But you're also just Mitch.
Yeah, exactly.
Well, that's the point.
I mean, this is what's crazy is, right?
Like, and I know it's so identifying of your, like, it's such an identifier.
But like Britain, I don't walk around.
We're not like, hi, I'm Britain, Laura, the heterosexual.
And like, it's crazy in which you feel as though it's something that has to be announced.
and that is what we get into with the whole Billie Eilish chat.
But also I think that that's changing.
I think that for a lot of people, someone's sexuality,
it's just not that interesting anymore.
For so many of us, we've gotten to a place where it's like
it used to feel gossipy.
It used to feel like you knew something about someone
that was a bit naughty.
Did you hear?
It has completely lost that essence now.
And I know in some communities, I know in some small towns,
it probably still feels like that.
But I would say overarchingly, the pendulum is swinging
and it's swinging far in the other direction now.
Yeah, there's still a lot of change that needs to happen.
And we love you and we're proud.
Thank you so much.
Happy anniversary.
I spoke about something that was actually really quite difficult
for me this week, something that happened with the kids.
And, you know, I guess for me I put so much, and Matt does too,
we put so much energy and effort into making sure that our kids
have rules and structure around screen time.
And the reason for that is not just because we don't want their brains
to turn into porridge, but it's to protect them, you know,
so that they don't see some of the stuff that is visible
across social media or across TV or even on the news.
And we had an experience on the weekend just past where Marley
and Lola both saw something on a TV that was completely
not age appropriate and it really rocked us
and it has really rocked them and now we're dealing
with that as a family.
So it was a big one to talk about, especially on the radio,
but I think it's a really important PSA for parents as well.
Yeah, all that and a load more coming up today.
We finally went out this past weekend, guys.
We had the team outing, the team Christmas party,
the team event with the four of us, Laura, you, Mitch, me
and our producer, Tony, that we have been dying
and trying to have for the entire year.
It was the Christmas pick-up party.
Yay!
Actually, no-one picked up.
No-one did pick up.
No, I tried.
So Mitch tried actually very hard.
It was quite embarrassing.
But we'll go back to that.
No, I love you.
You guys in particular, Laura, you in particular,
because you've got the kids, you always are on us.
Like, can we please all do a group thing?
Like, I just want to go out with you guys.
I just want to be out.
And we're like...
I'll get a sitter.
I'll get a sitter.
And I did get a sitter.
And we did go out.
Not with us, you didn't.
I have a few issues with how the night went down.
I was worried she was going to get like this, Laura,
because she was moody at the end, wasn't she?
Oh, yeah.
I wasted my night and my time with my colleagues that didn't turn up.
Get off it, Laura.
Okay, first, Laura got into, sometimes she has a few drinks.
It's not a bad thing, but she gets into D&M mode,
where she wants to, like, sit down and really get into
some childhood trauma.
And so she, for about an hour, with one person,
she was on a lounge just, like, having this tea for people.
I had a speakeasy, by the way.
This was an intimate cocktail for her.
I just love a chat, guys.
How do you think I got into radio?
Love a chat.
Just want to know how people's lives have been,
what's been happening.
Okay, again, just to reiterate, night out for the Christmas party.
Yeah, chat with us, chat with us.
I mean, I was talking to someone from our sales team.
I was not talking to anyone.
They were still from our party.
It's irrelevant.
So moving forward, then we're having a nice time,
the four of us sitting down,
and Mitch decides to go and start his very own arm wrestling competition.
Oh, yeah.
Mitch, you were getting men to line up.
There were about six people.
You picked all the ones that you wanted to flirt with,
got them to line up.
The only good thing I have to say about this is that you let them win
as if to make them feel good
and then you were going to try and work your way in.
No, there was this gorgeous guy
and he was flirting with me, actually.
And then I said to him,
oh, I challenge you to a duel.
And I wrestled him in the middle of the bar.
But I didn't bring my sword.
So let's have an unrest.
And we unrested on the table.
And he cheated and I almost did win.
I almost did win.
But it did take about...
He also wasn't flirting with you
because we've all established
that he was completely straight.
Do you think so?
Yeah, that's well.
He said to you, you said are you gay?
He said I'm straight.
I don't remember any of this happening.
I do remember winning, though.
Is that what happened?
You lost.
Okay.
Embarrassingly because he was half your size.
That did take about 40 minutes of the night though, I remember.
Yeah, so that was about 40, 45 minutes because you kept lining the boys up.
Then Tony, producer Tony and I were like, okay,
because we were just sitting on our own at this point,
we were like finally maybe we can have our group hang.
Yeah.
And then you guys decided to go off and get in the middle,
at 1am on our night out, we haven't spoken yet,
you decided to go get tarot readings.
Okay, no, no, this cocktail bar has a, picture this,
You go down these stairs, beautiful cocktail bar.
There is this gorgeous looking with a crystal ball
and she's going tarot readings, tarot readings.
And Laura comes and grabs me and goes,
we've got to get a tarot reading.
It's like 15 bucks, 10 minutes, let's go.
Laura doesn't believe in psychics.
Why on our one night out at 1am is this the night you decide to,
I might try out my luck with a psychic.
Because, Britt, Mama was on the loose.
Mama's ready to try new experiences.
And in that moment, I'd had my margaritas,
I had my Aperol Sours and I was ready.
That's not a drink.
Aperol Sours.
Amaretto Sour.
She did.
It was a really sour.
Can I say?
I had a bourbon and margarita.
It was really sad because the gypsy was packing up a crystal ball,
putting it in a round briefcase.
She was trying to leave.
And she goes, and Laura went, Laura, please, I need to be read.
And the lady's like, oh, sit down, all right.
I need to know my future.
Also, I'm a full convert now.
I know that I may be poorly timed.
I was like, I've seen the light.
Maybe I'm someone who's into tarot.
You saw the light because you were at 1am having,
would you have an Aperol Sour?
No, it was actually amazing.
Britt, she told me that I have a very powerful voice.
Britt, do you know what?
She was so accurate.
But both Mitch and I walked away from it.
We were like, I don't think she knew who we were.
She's like, I'm getting Maddie in a letter, J.
But no, she didn't know who you were.
I don't think she did.
Is it a J?
Yeah, I'm getting a rose.
I'm getting the makeup.
3 to 4pm.
Is that time important to you?
Yeah, 3 o'clock.
Does that mean anything to you?
Wait, she said to Mitch, she said,
you've had a real external change, like something on your external body.
And Mitch was like, I have lost 40 kilos.
But this is the one that's convinced you, Laura,
the 2am psychic reading.
I've actually planned a dinner party and I've booked her
for a personal reading and we're all going to do it together.
But now she knows who you are and she's just going to Google all of this.
You'll be serving mapperol salads all night long.
It's going to be a great party.
Okay, so I came across a new study recently
And the findings of this study are very controversial.
Britt, it really pertains to you more than it does to me,
but I want to know how you feel about this.
Okay, so this is the findings.
50% of women in relationships have a backup partner.
Now, what...
Rubbish.
Okay, wait, wait, wait.
What that means is not that you have somebody already on the go
or anything like that,
but just that most women who are in relationships
have somebody in the periphery of their mind
who they could go to if things fell flat in their relationship.
Like a kind of like a just in case, emergency, pull the ripcord kind of person.
It took me the better part of 10 years to find the first person to be in the relationship with.
How are these people finding backup?
Who has an understudy partner waiting to go?
And like, do you have to like stay in some sort of contact with these people to make sure that they're staying on your level to fill in?
Yes, like a six weekly check in.
This is dumb.
This is so dumb.
If you are listening right now and you have a backup person for your relationship, I'm going to tell you some groundbreaking news.
you're in the wrong relationship.
If you are already backing up that your relationship isn't going to work,
call it quits now.
Yes, but what if it's still early doors?
Okay, like you're saying this.
What if you've only been dating for six months or seven months or something
and you're in it but you're not 100% sure if they're 100%?
Ask them.
Have a conversation.
Well, we're hand-breaking, yeah.
Hey, are you in this?
No, but I actually, to be honest, Laura, I know what you mean.
When you're in the early stages of dating and the roster is open,
you have a couple of people on the back burner in like the first six months,
I'd say.
Just in case.
Yeah, but that's different.
You've got a roster.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But if you're in a long-term relationship, bad.
Also, don't come for me.
This is not my data.
I'm not the 50% in this room, okay?
You went out on the street.
No, no, yeah.
I wasn't like, hey, how do I feel about my husband
who I have two children with?
No, but this is, obviously,
there has been quite a research pool that's been done
and there are people who have this.
Now, I would love to know if you are out there
and you have feelings about this
or you have a backup partner in mind,
what does that look like?
13-106-5, a burner partner.
It's like a burner phone.
You've just got like an emergency.
Or maybe you say, oh, he's just my friend.
But if you've got a backup partner,
it means you also don't want to be on your own.
It means you want a monkey branch.
Because the thought of them breaking up with you is like,
oh, I need to have someone ready to go.
Liz is here on 131065.
Do you have a backup partner, Liz?
I do not have a backup partner.
I think that's ridiculous.
And I think it's really sad.
Like, I totally agree.
I think that the study should be titled
that 50% of women aren't happy in their relationship.
50% of women are insecure in their relationship, yes.
Totally.
Like, who knew that behind closed doors women secretly have a boyfriend reserve bank?
I think it's crazy.
Yeah, and also the best part about, I think, leaving a relationship
is then having those single months after.
And if you've got a backup waiting, then you're just robbing yourself of personal growth.
How long have you been in your relationship for, Liz?
I've been in a relationship for seven years.
Right, no itch, no backup?
No itch, no.
And I just think, like, there's a difference between having a little perv on someone
and then having a backup.
Like, I also think, imagine if the shoe was on the other foot.
Imagine if this was a study done by men.
Like, we would be up in arms.
Totally.
100%.
All right, Ella's called on 131065.
Ella, what's your take on this?
Do you have a backup partner?
Oh, look, I think that we all do.
I'm not sure that statistic's right.
I think it's much higher.
I think most would if they were being truly honest.
Okay, I have to know, Ella,
how long have you been in a relationship for?
She's like, never.
Seven years.
Seven years!
All right, what's the backup?
How close are they?
Like, what's the proximity to your backup?
Could you go to them tomorrow?
Or I could.
But that means you are having contact with them, Ella, which...
Wait, I need to know more.
Where are things at now in terms of appropriate friendship level?
Like, do you...
It's my husband's best friend.
Oh, God.
Ella, Ella, Ella, Ella, I'm going to...
Wait, no, I need more.
You are the minority here, not the other way around.
Okay, I understand that.
It's just very complicated because the best friend is also my ex.
Okay.
Oh, you've got way bigger issues.
All right.
We don't have time to unpack this.
No, I need to know.
So, wait, you've kept him as a friend, though,
and your partner thinks that you guys are all just amicable friends,
but there's still some fire there.
I think there is, yeah.
And it's not my decision that they're still friends.
They're just still in each other's lives.
Oh, Ella, this is a disaster waiting to happen.
It's really a menage a trois, but today I think that's what it is.
I'm just saying.
I think maybe go for it.
Dive in.
I think you need to can that friendship.
Britt, I agree with you.
I think that that's a friendship that's a disaster waiting to happen.
I agree.
Guys, I have something that's a lot more serious
that I wanted to talk to you about.
It comes as a bit of a PSA to parents out there.
As you might know, I'm a mum.
I have two little kids, Marley.
She's four and Lola's two.
And on the weekend, we were faced with a situation
that I did not think I would be faced with this early with my kids.
So just to kind of give you the background,
we have a lovely older lady who lives next door to us.
she's in her 80s. It's been a really nice part of like living in this new house is that the kids
will go over and they'll visit this lovely lady next door. And you know, our doors always open
to her and we kind of try and keep her company as well as you know, allow the kids to have a bit of
a relationship with our neighbour. And on the weekend just passed, I went over there with the
girls and my neighbour and I were standing on the balcony having a chat and the girls ran inside
into her house. And we're playing around because she's got dolls inside. She's got things in there.
and about 15 minutes passed and Marley and Lola came out
and Lola, who's two, was white as a ghost
and Marley was bawling her eyes out
and I thought, what could have possibly just happened?
And Marley came out and said, oh, there was something on the TV
and I walked inside and not realising, our neighbour who is quite elderly,
she didn't really register what she had playing out on the TV
and she had a true crime documentary playing
and so the girls had run inside they'd seen something on the tv and then they'd stood there
and watched it and they had seen something truly horrific play out on tv really violent
and now this is so much for a little two-year-old and a four-year-old to process and also for me as
a parent to process the fact that they've experienced this and they've seen it and then
how do we deal with that and it's just been such a challenging two days and it's gonna make me
upset because you try so hard as a mum to protect your kids from this sort of stuff and then it
feels like in one moment you can completely fail them. And that's how I felt off the back of that
experience. And, you know, I thought in this house, they were so safe. We've done it a hundred
times and it was just in that moment. And then you're like, how do you take back something that
they've now seen? How do you comfort them in a way to explain what they've seen on a TV isn't
real when they're too young to really comprehend what's happening? I mean, I think the thing is
here, not that it makes it okay, but unfortunately in life, there are going to be things that are
outside of your control and you can be the best parent in the entire world which we all know you
are and these things can still happen that you can't undo that and you can't be even a helicopter
parent can't be with their kids 24 7 like there's always going to be something in life and you know
you hear this from parents all the time at all different ages that you wish you could protect
them from everything and be there with them every step of the way but you just can't and I guess now
it's how do you explain to them that that was fake that that wasn't real that that's a growing
up show where it's it's acting like i i'm assuming that was tomato sauce is that what you had to do
had what was your first step as a parent did you talk to matt your husband and go we need to talk
to them my yeah and my first step with the girls was really reassuring i mean they live in the
safest house they are filled with love like they are filled with safety but i just i was like how
do you explain to them that what's happening on the tv isn't real how do you explain to them that
what they've just seen is not something that they should have to comprehend and i guess partly as
well like you want to validate that it's okay to be scared of that because I would have been scared
too but it's not real and I guess for me I just having this experience on the weekend it made me
exactly as you said Brit like realize that you can try so hard like you can put all of the safety
nets in place and sometimes things can happen that feel beyond your control but that doesn't
mean that you don't feel incredibly guilty for it and that's what I'm dealing with now is this like
I feel like I'm the failure in that. Oh Gloria you can't feel that at all because you're not.
Which you are absolutely not.
It's so normal and so natural.
It's part of growing up.
Like you said, Britt, I mean, I have memories to this day
of seeing Pan's Labyrinth nowhere near what the girls saw,
but it shook me to my, David Bowie holding a baby.
So scary.
And also all my cousins had all the Goosebumps books
and the front covers.
Goosebumps are scary.
I would go downstairs in my cousin's house at family events
and I'd look at these covers and I'd look at them
and I'd be so terrified and I would lose sleep over them.
I didn't tell anyone.
And it's not my parents' fault.
I don't think and blame my kids.
so your kids are not going to blame you.
Yeah, and maybe this is the reminder to parents,
like your kids at some point are going to see things,
whether it be because they have an older sibling
who's on an iPad or because you've been on Instagram
and like there's so much that's happening online these days,
whether it be violence overseas or whatever it is,
but it is very easy for them to come across something
that is not age appropriate.
And I guess for me this was a real lesson
around how much more, I guess, active I have to be
and how much more protection kids need in terms of, like, screen time
and having that be in front of mind.
Yeah, of course.
Okay, I'm in a bit of a conundrum, you two.
Maybe you can help me out.
My partner, Ben, obsessed with him, love him.
He is the best boyfriend.
I can't fault him, except for the fact that he lives overseas.
Yeah, I mean, it's a minor problem, isn't it?
Also, you can't fault him for the fact that he lives in another country.
He's not anywhere near here to be faulted.
No, I can't fault him.
But part of him living overseas means, bless his soul,
He constantly sends me little gifts to my house.
Like they'll just turn up surprises to be like,
I'm thinking of you, like I love you.
He's very sweet.
He's very sweet.
Anyway, I'm just going to call a spade a spade.
I'm proper triggered.
Yesterday, The Bachelor ad was playing and for those playing at home,
like I got horrifically dumped on the end of The Bachelor.
It didn't work out well for me.
Not everyone is Laura Byrne who got the happy ending.
No.
Okay.
Brittany was on The Honey Badger season many moons ago
and she got to the very, very end and The Honey Badger didn't work out so well.
It didn't pick you.
Look, I was the only person to win The Bachelor
and not actually win anything.
You didn't win.
So anyway, The Bachelor ad is playing
and then there's a knock on my door
and I open it and there's a dozen beautiful roses.
You could not have got the timing more impeccable as The Bachelor.
And I was like, I was proper triggered from Ben.
He sent me something being like thinking of you
as The Bachelor is playing.
It was all a bit of sensory overload.
Ben seems to be adverse to sending any other flower
other than a rose.
And I don't know, do I say something?
I should just be appreciative, right?
I mean, everyone says it's the thought that counts.
But I do think that if you're going to send a girl who's been on The Bachelor
who got dumped on there, some red roses, it's kind of a thoughtless gift.
But I would also say, like, it's been a long time.
I don't know why you are as triggered as you are.
You didn't get dumped, Laura.
You've got two kids and a marriage.
I think about it sometimes and I'm like,
maybe it's because of moments like this.
Right now.
I can't give 100% of me to you.
I'm a little bit lost.
And because of that, I have to say,
this time has come to an end and let you go.
Is it as triggering as that, maybe?
I have not listened to that since the night that I got dumped.
I've never listened to that back until this moment.
I don't understand why you guys just did that to me.
Also, I don't understand why you treat me like I'm a fish.
I've got to let you go.
I caught you being too small.
You're oversized, so I've got to throw you back in.
Was that moment triggering to listen back,
or maybe is this moment more triggering?
He didn't receive a rose.
This is so me.
He didn't receive a rose.
Sorry, I just had to, I just found it.
Are you okay?
Are you guys finding humour at my expense?
No.
I also have this bunch of red roses here for you.
No, guys, come on, you're supposed to be my best friends,
not making me relive the worst.
We've got to laugh at you because you found love, you know?
You're not in a, I don't know, moment, for example, like this again.
I have something I need to tell you.
What?
It was almost laughable.
What?
You didn't pick me either.
You picked nobody.
Are you f***ing kidding me?
I'm laughing, but it's...
Are you kidding me?
No.
Sorry, it's not funny, but it's been long enough we can laugh.
I think we've finally hit the point six years on
where we can laugh about it.
It's so funny.
It is.
That is definitely something someone would say
that got married from the back door.
We love you, Britt.
We love you.
You're cooked.
I'm going back to bed.
All right.
Up next on The Pickup.
He didn't receive it.
Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry.
Sorry.
Hey, you guys might have heard last week that Billie Eilish,
the one and the only, came out.
She said she liked boys and girls.
It hit the news.
People ran with it.
It was this really big thing and then it sort of laid to rest a little bit.
Yeah.
But it has since come out again at the Variety Hitmaker Awards
that just happened, which is held by Variety.
She didn't come out in that original interview.
She was, quote-unquote, forced out on the red carpet
at the Variety event by Variety themselves.
Have a listen.
Did you mean to come out in the story?
Girl.
No, I didn't.
But I kind of thought, wasn't it obvious?
Like, it's kind of been...
I just, I didn't realise people didn't know, so...
We need to get to a point where you don't even have to come out.
I just don't really believe in it.
I'm just like, why can't we just exist?
I've been doing this for a long time, and I just didn't talk about it.
Whoops.
Same.
I literally was like to my mom and dating women now.
But I was like, I saw the article, and I was like, oh, I guess I came out today.
I was like, oh, I guess.
Okay, cool.
There are so many parts to this that I want to unpack.
But straight after this, Billie released a statement that said,
Thanks, Variety, for my award and for also outing me
on a red carpet at 11am instead of talking about anything else
that matters.
I like boys and girls.
Leave me alone about it, please.
Literally, who cares?
Now, I find it interesting that the interviewer said to Billie,
oh, my God, it's so crazy that you even have to come out,
yet her first question was, did you mean to come out?
Like, she made it this event.
The worst part about this whole situation is it's not even
that she was outed it's that a hundred thousand people unfollowed billy on instagram immediately
just because she said she's gay it shouldn't be a big deal at all but there is this fascination
that people seem to have with people's sexuality there seems to be this fascination in terms of
like well but like what are they really doing how do they identify but the fact that a hundred
thousand people unfollowed immediately there's still a hundred thousand people immediately so
homophobic that they're like i can't even look at you and mitch i mean what was it like for you
when you came out.
I know it was a different time.
It was a little while ago now.
But did you have that similar effect of homophobia?
As a global pop star as well, Britt, I can bet you.
Because you're winning huge variety awards.
Of course, of course, of course.
No, no, but you're right.
I mean, I lost my best friend when I came out.
And you sort of look at the timeline.
I've only been out for five years.
It's my five-year anniversary in about two weeks.
Happy anniversary.
Thank you, yeah.
Get me a gay rainbow or something.
Happy gayversary.
I don't know, thank you.
Yeah, I've only been out five years,
which is a drop, like, in the pool of my timeline.
But I lost my best friend for religious reasons.
didn't talk um just didn't want a bar of it female or male best friend female best friend um maybe
she thought can't get him anymore i can't bag him no point being friends with him but it's true we
seriously and i've made this point many times but i was the same person the day before i came out to
the person that i was after i came out but i was less a best friend and you go why like why so then
what that did to my brain was like there's so many questions right and coming out took me 23 years to
get to the point of being comfortable enough to come out let alone talk about it on the radio i
was on air at the time and then when you hear billy speak like having the power taken out of
your hands in that situation i think is the biggest crime because it is such a horrific time
for a young queer person grappling with their identity i was outed at the workplace where i
worked i had someone out me to to management to leverage their position and themselves i don't
want to go into the details but i remember i was like frozen i just felt like this is my
story to tell i'm not ready yet but now all these people know but i think the big thing with this
Billie Eilish situation is that the woman who's interviewing is also queer she talked about how
you know oh well when I came out I just told my mum I'm dating girls now so I don't think it is
it was necessarily coming from a place of trying to catch a rat she was definitely trying to get
a headline but I think the big thing here is if you work in media and you have the opportunity
of interviewing incredible stars who are winning amazing awards who are doing incredible things
their sexuality or what they wore shouldn't be the two things that you discuss and it seems to
be that they're the two questions that always get asked
and everything else gets left on the floor.
And we saw it with Rebel Wilson last year when Rebel came out
and her hand was forced to come out.
But I think at the end of the day, Billie said it best,
who cares?
Who cares?
Who cares?
Who truly cares?
I mean, I do look good in glitter pants, so I do care.
You know what I mean?
And we will never dump you as a friend, Mitch.
Thank you.
That's actually very sweet.
In very exciting news, Mitch and I have decided to go
on our very first overseas holiday together.
Sounds like we're a couple.
You do say it like you've made that step in the right direction
of your relationship.
It's a big step in a friendship relationship
because you can be really good friends with someone
and travelling is a whole other kettle of fish.
But Mitch and I have decided, well, I'm going overseas
for Christmas and New Year's to the UK, to Scotland
to see my partner Ben, his family.
My family's going over, like my mum and dad, my sister.
It's a whole family affair.
And Mitch has decided he would like to come.
I'm coming to Scotland!
Oh, I'm so excited.
I know you guys are thrilled about this,
but I feel like you've forgotten
because we have been on an overseas trip together.
We went to Bali last year.
Oh, we did, yeah.
And Mitch is a series of disasters when it comes to holidaying.
Hey, hey, hey.
This man, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
I've never met a man who is more, and I love you,
and I say this with all the love in the world.
Thanks.
But you are a catastrophiser.
You went to drama school, you were a dramatiser
and a little bit of a hypochondriac.
And that little combination of person together
on an overseas holiday could end in disaster.
But I'm a fun person to be around.
You never know what's going to happen.
Yeah.
No, well, we remember in Bali, you got Bali belly,
you called a doctor to put you on a drip.
He was very nice.
You crashed your scooter, then you got so scared of driving.
Someone hit me.
Yeah, then you didn't drive it anymore.
No, that monkey bit me first.
You wouldn't drink the water.
You didn't know how to book your flights.
You didn't know how to book your accommodation.
I had to book your flights to Scotland for this trip.
She did.
It made me realise, oh, I don't know how this trip is going to go.
the other thing
the icing on the cake
is that you have
this obsession
with my boyfriend Ben
and I'm a bit concerned
that when you go
on this trip
I'm going to get
kicked out
and you and him
are going to have
some little love affair
when Ben came over
from Scotland
for the first time
Brit's like
I really wanted to be friends
with you
be friends
so we forged a friendship
now I'm accused
of trying to bone
Brit's boyfriend
what did you write
to him on the weekend
I saw your text messages
no I just said
I miss you
do you love me
as much as I love you
that is literally
and what did he say
he said
Yes.
And then I said, can I drive your car when I'm in Scotland?
And he said, absolutely not.
But he did.
Well, are you actually worried?
Because I'm good value.
I've grown.
I'm an older person.
I've lost weight.
I'm lighter on the plane.
Like, there's so much benefit to travelling with me.
No, I am a little bit worried about how it's going to go down
because you are joining the family trip.
Your mum and dad.
My mum and dad as well.
We're going on this three-day road trip.
But I do want to ask you just, like,
I just need to test the waters a little bit.
Hold on.
Is this an interview to see if I can come or not?
Yes.
We want to see how compatible you actually are for travelling together.
Are you in cahoots with this?
Yeah.
You're churn coat.
I know what's happening.
I would like to place a situation, a scenario.
Okay.
We're hiking, you and I, in the Scottish Highlands.
Oh, this is dramatic, yeah.
Okay, do you have some dramatic music there, Scott?
Yeah, I can go easy.
We're hiking and a snowstorm comes.
Very prepared.
A snowstorm comes out of nowhere.
Yeah.
Okay, because that's what happens in the Highlands.
I'm closing my eyes.
It's a blizzard.
As we start to run from the avalanche.
I've got fripples.
I have tripped.
There's an avalanche?
Over a Highland cow and I have rolled my ankle and I can't go forward anymore.
Yeah.
What do you do?
I check the cows, okay, because they're in danger.
Those Highland cows are so cute.
They're covered in fur.
All I know is he never sucked the venom out.
That's a snake.
And you don't know whether she had a spinal injury,
so you just leave her there.
Totally, yes.
Leave her there, laying head down, correct.
Do you at least leave me with a coat for warmth?
A coke?
A coat for warmth.
Not my coat.
No, a designer.
Absolutely not.
Okay.
I'll call an ambulance.
It's 111 in the UK.
Okay, Highlands.
You don't get an ambulance out of it.
Okay, scenario two.
You and I are on a night out just alone.
We're having a great time drinking.
Feasible.
I can't quite be sure where we are.
Yep.
And then you meet a guy that wants to go home with you.
Aha.
Tricky.
What do you do in that situation?
I get in an Uber and I go home with him.
What's the problem?
Are you guys not staying at the same hotel at this point?
Oh, yeah, we're sharing a bed in multiple of the accommodations.
Well, firstly, you don't bring him back.
Secondly, you don't leave me out there on my own.
You are fine on your own.
So far, you left me in the club alone
and you left me in the Highlands with a rolled ankle alone.
Oh, yeah, I am seeing a pattern here.
It's brutal alone on holidays.
Yes, at the moment you're solo travelling.
Is your ankle still rolled at the nightclub?
It is.
I'm in a moon boot.
Okay, you come with us.
You come with us.
Come home with us.
She doesn't want to see that either.
That'll roll her neck.
All right, I have a question for you guys.
Mitch, you are quite the fancy traveller.
I am.
You are.
You love your like bougie little holiday rooms.
You like a good Airbnb that has like a breakfast in the morning.
Everything all inclusive.
Five star.
I don't like hostels.
You love your breakfast.
leg. I do love breakfast food.
So how are you going to feel about the fact that one
of the weeks of your Scottish trip has
been booked in a hostel?
No, we haven't. We have hotels the whole time.
No, okay. You don't. Well, what happened
is Mitch loves bougie things, but
Mitch's bank balance doesn't like bougie things.
So we've had to... Mitch wanted
these fancy stuff and he put me on a budget, so
sorry, we are top and tailing
in a bed. You guys are staying at
one hotel, which is actually a hostel, which
has bunk beds in a shared dorm. Is this
For one week.
I'm not playing around.
You didn't give me much of a budget to play with.
To me, this is more intense than you rolling your ankle on a cow in the Highlands.
Do you know why?
It's because it's balanced.
So for most of the places you're staying in nice hotels,
but to be able to make it come into budget,
one of the hotels is actually a hostel.
Are you being serious?
That's where you're going to be staying.
I don't sleep in hostels.
I'm not doing hostels.
Have you seen Road Back Mountain?
Many times, yeah.
That's us up in the tent.
I don't think you've seen that movie.
I don't.
What holiday are you going on, Britt?
Britt, I do not think you've seen that movie.
Okay, that was the wrong camping analogy.
Yeah, I think so.
Mitch is really excited about this holiday.
This is like, I'm so Scottish Island right now.
