Starting point is 00:00:09 Hi guys and welcome back to another episode of Life Uncut. I'm Laura. I'm Brittany. And this is Ask Uncut, where we answer your deep, you're dark and your burning questions. You've just reminded me, Laws. Oh, thank goodness. Do you know what I used? I was such a nerdy child. I was sort of cool as well because I was in sports. I were all bases for me. I was really good at sport. So I was like a little bit cool. Sorry, what about anything I've done in the last 10 minutes reminded you that you were cool and also sporty as a kid? I'm going to get there. So Laura and I, sometimes before we start this, we put. pretend we do vocal warm-ups. We actually never do. But we say, unique New York, unique New York.
Starting point is 00:00:44 One, two, three, four, five, whatever. Yeah, we do it as a joke. Back in the day when we, when we first started doing the podcast, Britt would really aggressively slap herself in the face. She'd say, come on, and then just, I forgot that. Whack herself in the face. But that was when I'd maybe come off like a 12-hour shift at the hospital and then we had to, I was doing scrubs and we had to do a podcast. So I was like trying to amp myself up to find some energy. That's not what it was. Anyway, we were doing our vocal warm-ups now as a joke. One, one, two, one, two, one, two, three, two one. And I was saying, the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.
Starting point is 00:01:14 The quick brown fox. And then I remembered, that's actually not a vocal warmap. That is how you learn to touch type because it uses every, that sentence uses every letter in the alphabet. And now when we were growing up, we didn't have a computer that was like far too elaborate for our family. It's also because we had a typewriter. We had a typewriter. We're not that old. Fuck me.
Starting point is 00:01:33 We got a computer so late. I had a typewriter. A typewriter? Yeah, we had a typewriter. And my favorite activity, I used to come home from school as a kid in primary school, set up the typewriter. It printed out the paper. And I used to type that sentence over and over like a hundred times. A quick brown, Foxtap, hopefully, to talk. And that's how I learned to touch type. And it was my favorite activity. Can you touch type now? Because I've never seen you type fast. Ever. I can. I love some nails now. So I am. No, I can touch type. I can do it without looking. I don't have to look. This has just made me remember and reminiscent. back on the 90s computers that we all had. Do you remember the colorful Apple computer that everyone had? The see-through, it came in loads of different colors. We didn't get that one.
Starting point is 00:02:15 It was like the only desktop. It was the only like desktop computer art. I was still sending Carrie a Pigeon. And it was this like rounded, fat Apple desktop computer that was, we had a green one with a clear casing. I remember it. We didn't have it, but I remember it. I remember thinking that was like the coolest, richest computer.
Starting point is 00:02:32 We, yeah, there certainly weren't any of those things. But my mom was a school teacher. So I think she took it from one. We were thieves. That's what we were. Because I did go to school then I was saying there was one missing. I'm pretty sure she took it from school. That is so funny. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Yeah, we laugh. We laugh. What else? I just reminded myself of. Sorry, just while we're here, walking down memory lane, when I just said to send it by Carrier Pigeon, my grandma used. Sovette, we sound so old right now. She walked 100 miles with no shoes on just to get to school.
Starting point is 00:02:59 No, one of the other things. My other favorite thing to do was go to Grandma's house because grandma raced pigeons. And so at the back of her house, she had an Avery with like, 60 pigeons and we used to just go in and the pigeons would go crazy all over us and that was another very fond childhood memory. I love my life. Britt, anything else, if anything else spontaneously comes to you today during this record, make sure that you interrupt and tell us.
Starting point is 00:03:24 I'm feeling a bit nostalgic now. Maybe a camping trip, cooking dampar. Don't start me. I do have a story about dampar, but that's for another day. Okay, we can hold on to your horses for that one. Let's get into vibes and unsubscribe. Britt, what's your vibe? Sorry, if that's not the best intro we've ever done,
Starting point is 00:03:44 I'll eat my own shit in the words of Laura. I can't wait to serve you a delicious bowl of shit tomorrow. You wait. People are going to be writing about this for years to come. Okay, my vibe this week, if you are a dog lover, they have them for cats as well, but I don't have a cat. What? I don't know why that's funny.
Starting point is 00:04:02 It wasn't funny. If you're a dog lover or you own a dog, But as I was saying, before Laura really interrupted me, they have them for cats. So Laura, you could get one for both. You have a dog and a cat. It's basically dog and cat toothpaste. Sorry. So if you only probably in the last year, Keisha and I started brushing our dog's teeth
Starting point is 00:04:21 because Delilah has had immaculate teeth until now, but she's hit five. Once you hit five, that's middle age in the dog world. It's true. And it happens quickly. Anyway, we brush her teeth now and she's really used to it. So it's not a fight anymore. But it's because the toothpaste tastes so good. I haven't personally tasted it, but she loves it.
Starting point is 00:04:38 She just constantly licks as you're brushing and she wants to eat it and it's great. So we just bought a child, like a baby toothbrush, a real person, not a dog toothbrush. You can get them, but we just bought like normal toothbrush. So this particular one is from Pet Barn and it's called Dentipet. And the chicken flavour is elite. So we've gone through the flavors. Sorry. No, because it's really.
Starting point is 00:04:59 Can I tell you what I love about this? You said, if you're a dog lover or you have a dog as well. So even if you don't have a dog, but you just. love dogs, buy yourselves. Brush someone else's teeth out at the dog park. Brush another dog's teeth. Yeah. So that's it.
Starting point is 00:05:13 It's $35. It lasts for ages. Like it's pretty big and you only need the smallest amount. And go for gold. Do their teeth as long as you can. I can only probably get about 30 seconds and she's had enough. But her teeth are amazing and they actually love it. So that is my vibe of the week.
Starting point is 00:05:28 Okay. I do enjoy this. Teeth brushing of dogs is very important. I also have a little update because I've received a few messages recently. which I've, you know, it was funny. But I want to like clarify something. I still have a cat. A lot of people have been messaging me being like, where's your cat?
Starting point is 00:05:44 I also thought that. I have a cat. It's names Raspberry. It just hates us. Does she? She is the most catty cat that you've ever cated. She was rescued out of a bus shelter. Put it back in the bus shelter.
Starting point is 00:05:55 She's like, you little shit. I saved you. Maybe that's what she wants. She's a street cat. And when I say she's a street cat, actually, she's an indoor cat, but she wants to be a street cat. She doesn't particularly like anyone except for when she's, She's hungry, and so she's very autonomous. She just kind of wants to, like, hang out, do her own thing.
Starting point is 00:06:11 So where does she? If you try and pat her or love her, she likes to sleep on Mali's bed, but at the bottom of the bed doesn't like Mali to touch her. And every so often in the middle of the night, Molly will start crying because she'd be like, Raspberry bit me! We have a wild, she's a wild, wild thing. So you don't see her half the day? No, we see her.
Starting point is 00:06:26 She's around, but she's just not, she's not a cat that you can like pick up and cuddle or like pat and stuff. She's not like a lap cat. It's almost like, what's the point? Yeah, she's just a very autonomous cat. But she's getting better. She was a kitten and she's only like one and a half now, two years old now. She didn't live on the street that long.
Starting point is 00:06:40 No, she's in a blood. She's a street cat from the blood. She's a gangster. You could take the cat out of the street. We can't take the street out of the cat. No, I mean it though. Like some cats just, it's funny because some cats are more like dogs and they're all sweet and cuddling and cozy and they're like want to pat and like want to play.
Starting point is 00:06:56 Raspberry is not that kind of cat. You can pat her for a few seconds, but then you see that little tail waving and she's going to pounce. The only time that she likes to play is she does this thing where she hides on the chairs and then lashes out at you to scratch you. I don't think that's plain. I think she actually thinks she's a lion. Anyway, we just kind of like, we live around her.
Starting point is 00:07:13 It's her house and we live in it together. Wow. So yes, we have a cat. She just hates us. I think that's why I'm not a cat person. Yeah. Because like when you just described that, I just don't see the point. I'm still a cat person and I will persevere.
Starting point is 00:07:25 I kind of like that you've got to earn their love. Like she does like us and we... Yeah, but that's why you're in so many toxic relationships. You always felt like you had to earn people's love. I've been a toxic relationship with my cat. I have a very very. rogue vibe for you guys this week. It's, hear me out. It's a salad recipe, everyone. It is the easiest salad recipe that you're ever going to make, and I am addicted to it. I cannot take claim to this.
Starting point is 00:07:47 I was at my sister-in-law's house. She makes this all the time. It's just the easiest, easiest recipe that there ever was, and it's so delicious. Okay. What is an iceberg lettuce? No, it's a cabbage salad, but wait for it. Okay, you shred up cabbage. I'm going to put this in the show notes. Oh, we're going to go through the whole recipe. Yeah, you have to. The recipe's in the show notes, but I'm going to go through it really quickly. You shred up cabbage, rocket, mint, and then you defrost peas. Don't cook the peas, just defrost them. Mix them all through it. You've lost me at the pee. Shredded parmesan, that goes in there as well. A grated parmesan, mix it all together. And then the dressing is a whole lemon, olive oil, dejean mustard,
Starting point is 00:08:23 mustard, crushed pepper, sorry, crushed garlic, crack pepper, and salt. Well, if you guys didn't write that down, it'll be in the show notes. I cannot tell you how addictive the salad is. I now have a hyperfixation on it. I have made it almost every day. Oh, and chili. Fresh chili. Don't forget the chili. It's lit. It is so lit. You lost me at peas, but otherwise sounds delicious. For me, a pea does not belong in a salad. I don't actually think peas belong anywhere except the ground. I used to live with a guy who had a phobia of peas. Genuine. Didn't like how they rolled around on his plate. Oh, there's reasons about that. I think. That's probably goes a bit deeper. Okay. We're scared over that. Okay. Well, everyone.
Starting point is 00:09:04 go get the salad recipe. Everyone. Run, don't walk. That pee might roll away. All right, I'm going to kick these questions off with one that I thought was really funny. And I think it's going to be an easy one to answer, but I quite enjoyed it. I accidentally said my ex's name during sex with my current partner. And instead of correcting myself at the time, I just kept going like he didn't hear it.
Starting point is 00:09:29 However, he absolutely, most definitely did hear it. He has also pretended like it didn't happen. It has now been three weeks, but I cannot stop thinking about it. Do I address this or write it out, pun intended, she wrote, until we both forget. Why is everything so funny today? I don't know. This is literally the worst. This is the worst.
Starting point is 00:09:51 Even though you know that he's not. I've never done it. I did it. I did it. You made me pay for lunch. I've talked about it on the podcast many years ago. It was my birthday as well. I did it on my birthday.
Starting point is 00:10:04 I did it on my birthday. and he made me feel guilty for like weeks and he made me take him out to lunch to apologize on my birthday. It's pretty bad. It's pretty bad. In my defense, hear me out, I had been with my ex for eight years. Still not an excuse. Wait for it.
Starting point is 00:10:20 And then I was with this new guy and he was the sociopath. And my ex was better at sex. And my ex messaged me. You know when you break up with someone's long term, there's like a year or two that's like you don't hear from them but you get the birthday message? Yeah. It's mainly when you're younger, right? like maybe before, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:10:36 And so he had messaged me and I had just read it. So his name had popped up and it just said like happy birthday. That's it. But because I just read it. Anyway, then we had sex. And then I said his name and it was, oh my God, I'll never forget. I could not ride that one into the sunset. That was like a stop down.
Starting point is 00:10:52 But this is different. He just pretended like he didn't hear it. But you know he did. That's weird. I probably would have addressed it in the moment. If you've said it to his face in the moment, I probably would have been like, wow, I'm so sorry. Because it is really bad.
Starting point is 00:11:04 Like, it is bad for sure. In that moment, there's no worst moment to get a name mixed up. Yeah. But also, three weeks has gone past and it hasn't been brought up. Why would you circle back? I would, he obviously knows it was a misunderstanding. I would just be trying to play on. Yeah, but the reason why she's questioning it is because she can't stop thinking about it.
Starting point is 00:11:22 So then maybe go back to your ex. No. If you can't stop thinking about him and it. She's not thinking about her ex. She's thinking about the humiliation of saying it. And so she's like, do I bring it up to apologize now? or do I just let it go? I think it's we're weirder to bring it up now.
Starting point is 00:11:38 A month later, yeah. I remember we having sex three weeks ago? Yeah. And I called you Stephen's name. I'm really sorry. He also doesn't want to rethink about it. Like he's moved on and he's obviously understood. Stoid?
Starting point is 00:11:49 Yeah, that was weird. Like I was different. I'm understood. I feel like we've eaten gummies or something. What's wrong with us? Well, like something's not right. I feel like he understood. I understood.
Starting point is 00:12:03 I feel like he understood. You're predicament and what happened and where it went wrong. Play on. If you do it again, ask yourself why and also stop down in the moment. And I do mean that. I think jokes aside, unless you are like a blasting music at the same time and you think it could have been muffled and you could play it off as something else. Like most people have sex in silence, right?
Starting point is 00:12:23 Like it's just the background noise. He heard you. He definitely heard you. It's weird that you guys didn't say anything. You also know that he heard you. I'd love to know, like, were you both able to still finish? Because I'd be a bit distracted. I wouldn't be able to put on a very good pantomime with that one.
Starting point is 00:12:37 If someone, like if Matt said his ex-girlfriend's name, I wouldn't just be like, oh, yeah, yeah, having a great time. It's not going to happen. Sorry to try and. I understand why she could keep going, because she was probably like, well, but if it would have made him go limp, surely. I don't think it did. Obviously, like, they just pretended like it didn't happen.
Starting point is 00:12:56 Mate, it's been three weeks. Let it go. Let it go. Yeah, if he hasn't said anything, he has decided he's going to try and put that one to I am. I admire people who are able to let things go. Not me. Not me. Laura's like an elephant. Not me. No, I'm not, it's not that I never forget. I forget loads of things. But if something's playing on my mind, I fucking got to talk about it. If it's itching, if it's itching at me like, hello. I'm the opposite. I am someone who has to talk about or call
Starting point is 00:13:26 out the thing that's like upsetting me. I can't just let it go. I've got to have the conversation. I can't. I've got a list with you. I've been kidding on. All right, next question. Okay, question two. My partner wants to invite his ex to our wedding because they are still friends. I'm getting married in a year and a half and we have decided on the numbers of guests. This is going to be around 100. But my fiancé is insisting on inviting an ex-girlfriend.
Starting point is 00:13:50 They dated for two years and they've stayed semi-close since breaking up five years ago. There are a few people that are all mutually friends, which is mostly why they've stayed as part of this bigger extended group. I've met her a few times and she seems like. Lovely, but the idea of her being there on the day still doesn't sit right with me for some reason. Is this something I just need to get over, or is it fair to ask him to leave her off the list? I think it's fair that you don't want her at the wedding. I don't think it's something that needs, like she's not a guest that needs to be there.
Starting point is 00:14:22 I do think like a pretty honest conversation with your husband needs to happen. However, in saying that, I had one of Matt's exes at our wedding. So Matt's really long-term ex who he was with when he was in the UK is still, in his friendship group, like they're all still friends. They still hang out. They still see each other like from time to time, not one on one, but like in a friendship group. And I've met her and I really like her. And so like I had no issues with him inviting her. We went to her wedding as well when we first started dating. Was she at your wedding? Yeah, she was there. She was at our wedding. But quite funny. So this part of it, I think, is worth the story. We paid for a videographer,
Starting point is 00:14:58 of course, to come. Like, you know, everyone's wanting to film their weddings and take photos. They nailed your first dance. Yeah, look, there was a few. dramas with the videographer, to be honest. They completely cocked up our first dance. We didn't get our first dance because they filmed the back of someone's head. So we just didn't get a video of it at all. And they sent me and Matt the cut down version of the wedding. So like the most important part, the vows, me walking down the aisle, our guests were sitting in the chairs all like, oh, their reactions when I was walking down the aisle and Matt crying and like the really beautiful wedding video that you wait to receive. And obviously, in the,
Starting point is 00:15:34 the crowd of my wedding, I have my mom, my mother-in-law, literally you, like all my closest friends and my family are there. And like, I've told the videographer who my closest friends and my family are. Like, these are the people, the most important people. And so we see this video. The video is me walking down the aisle. And then it just cuts to Matt's ex-girlfriend in the crowd watching. And it stays on her for like 10 seconds. Then it cut to Mitch Churie for three seconds. That was it. That was the only people from the whole guest list. They were terrible. And I was like, hey, sorry, just can you put someone else in? Because I don't really want her. I was like, I love her.
Starting point is 00:16:12 She's lovely, but I don't want her in my wedding video. And they're like, we didn't film any other gas. So they only filmed Matt's ex-girlfriend. And Mitch Tury. And Mitch Tury. Oh my God. And shame, because it was Mitch Tury and Mitch Tury's boyfriend. And they're not even together anymore. So Mitch Tury's ex-boyfriend is like the one guy. I was like, he's the one guy that's like, he's the one guy that's like, So two people who we barely see now. Anyway, that's my experience of it. That's so bad. It is so bad. But I would say it's an unnecessary thing to have exes. And I think you can make a rule. If you feel uncomfortable by it, it's your wedding. You are number one. The two of you together are the most important people there. And so there shouldn't be anything that's happening at that wedding that makes you feel uncomfortable. And I do think that it's pretty easy to say, look, I don't want anyone that either of us have been in relationships with. I don't think that's a dick move to ask that.
Starting point is 00:16:58 I do too. Devil's Advocate. It's been five years. And if they are still in the same friendship group, like they all do still hang out, that is awkward if you are then the only friend that's not invited. But people will understand why. It's because you guys date it. Yeah, but then it makes it look like you're really insecure. Because it's like, they're our friend. It's been five years. You're literally marrying him. I get both sides. I think you're entitled to have the conversation with him. But if it is still his friend, he's probably going to want them there as well. And it could really disqual. disrupt the friendship dynamics. This is a really tricky one because I genuinely see both sides and I
Starting point is 00:17:33 understand both. If it was like your relationship had happened really quickly and they'd only broken up a year ago and it felt fresh or you'd found some messages between them at some point and you felt uncomfortable. But it sounds like it really is five years ago and you're all just still amicable in the same friendship group. The only thing though, you said Bridges-than, you know, it makes you seem really insecure. No, it could make you. Totally. But maybe she is insecure. Maybe it's is something that's an insecurity for her. And that's okay. Some people do have insecurities. And if you feel as though that that's what you're going to be thinking about on your wedding day, there's no point us sitting here and being like, well, you know, that's, that's on you. That's your problem to deal with.
Starting point is 00:18:11 It might be your problem to deal with, but ultimately it's still your wedding day. So I do think that you should get a say in it. I think a very big conversation with your partner around why it makes you feel uncomfortable, why you don't want to have to think about it. And if he's still like, look, it's really important to me that she's there. It's going to cause more problems than it's going to solve. You know, I think then you have. to come to a compromise. But I don't think that having exes at weddings is necessarily like just a blanket statement weird because we had it and it was fine. And it wasn't, there was no weirdness there. Except that she was in my wedding video. Except she's the only one. Except that when
Starting point is 00:18:42 she's highlighted my wedding video, that was kind of weird. It's all down to the circumstances. Did it end well? How long ago did it end? How good a friends are you now? What's the friendship group? Et cetera, et cetera. So if he's, I don't know, if he's really good friends with her, he's going to want her there as part of his friendship group. If she's like on the sideline of the group and she's just there because she's there and he doesn't really care that much, then your feelings should take over his feelings. Your feelings of not wanting her there should be enough. But if they're really tight, then his feelings probably have to outweigh yours.
Starting point is 00:19:15 It's tricky. Let us know how it goes. And also congratulations. Hope you have a wonderful wedding. Also, it's a year and a half. They might not be friends by them. Yeah. Oh, that is it.
Starting point is 00:19:23 That's long enough to like, try for him to try and wean her out. I also think maybe just don't send the invite just yet for her. Yeah. Like don't send the save the date. Awkward. Just like send the same date. You can't say to everyone though and not in a group, not her. Send it late. Next question. My mom keeps giving my brother money and I found out by accident. My brother is three years younger than me and has kind of always been the black sheep of the family. Nothing terrible or criminal, but very much the type where the whole family is like, oh, what's he done now? I recently discovered my mom has been quietly giving my brother thousands of dollars over the past few years to help with bills, while I've never asked her for a cent
Starting point is 00:19:59 and have never been offered anything. When I brought it up, she said it's different because he needs it more. I know I shouldn't compare, but I can't shake how unfair it feels. I feel like I'm being punished for being responsible and acting like a normal adult with my shit together. I'd love an extra couple of grand as well. Am I being a bad sister for feeling like this? Oh, man. This one's also tricky because I'm a fence sitter on this one as well, because I understand this when one child, this is actually a real thing, when one child is, I don't know what the right words are, harder to deal with. Maybe they need more attention, they need more energy, they need more handholding, they might
Starting point is 00:20:41 not be as driven, they might not be as smart, they might, whatever it is. As parents, you are going to help that child because they need help. You're always going to help your children that need help. And they're not always going to be created equal. And whether that is what they need day to day or whether that's what they need when they're older, some things might be emotional, whatever it is. Handholding is going to look different for all kids. Unfortunately, it seems like you have your shit together completely and he doesn't. It does get to a point, though, where you have to be able to say enough's enough.
Starting point is 00:21:13 He's not going to get better and start working and earning his own money because you keep giving it to him. You keep handing it to him on a platter. But I do understand why they may have given him something and not giving it to you. They might also not be in a financial position to then dish that out to however many siblings you have. Yeah, I don't want to begrudge you of having these feelings because I think it is totally reasonable that you feel as though that this hasn't been fair. Especially when you find out about it and it's not something that was known. It feels like a secret was being kept because potentially they also saw that it was a little bit unfair. But sometimes what is fair isn't always what is equal.
Starting point is 00:21:47 And I agree with you, Britt, when you say that there's always going to be one kid in a family who needs more help or needs more support. And like the squeaky wheel is what gets the oil. There absolutely is a point, though, where help becomes enabling, especially when it's like the youngest child who for some reason retains support for so much longer simply because they're always going to be the youngest, but actually they're still in their 20s now or their 30s or whatever. The training wheels need to come off and they need to be able to live life and have the
Starting point is 00:22:13 responsibilities that everyone else has. But in saying that, I don't know, I think that there's also something really valuable that you can take from this. And that is this sense of knowing that what you have created in your life, you are able to do for yourself. And like, your brother doesn't seem to have the capacity to do that. Whether that's because he's unable to, whether it's because you think he mooches off your parents, whatever it is, you still have been able to achieve those things yourself. So I think that there's a level of like being really proud of that. I don't know. I kind of, I guess maybe because I've experienced this.
Starting point is 00:22:45 situation myself. Like I've experienced this identical situation. And now I don't look at it with such a level of unfairness. Now that time has passed, I'm kind of like, okay, you know what? At the end of the day, he probably needed more support than what I did. And so I get that that's why my mum and, you know, our family did what they need to do. I've also spoken about this a lot in the past on this podcast. I don't believe your parents are there to hold your hand your entire life. Your parents are there to gets you to a point where when you become an adult, you are able to go and live on your own. 100%. And they're there to then help you when you need it. Family should always be there when something happens and you need it. And some people are lucky enough to have that and some people aren't.
Starting point is 00:23:27 I recognize that. But sometimes it makes me angry the expectation people have on their parents to be providing things for them, providing house deposits, providing like this expectation that because they're their parents that they always have to give, give, give. I just think that is so far from how it should be. And maybe that's because it's my experience. We were brought up so well that when we became adults, we were so hyper-independent and we could go and live on our own. We've never asked our parents for anything. I would never dream of asking my parents for money or for a house deposit because they're also living their life now. They've put in the hard yards for four kids. But I understand different family dynamics work very differently. I have friends that have had houses
Starting point is 00:24:06 handed to them and whatever else or house deposits and other people who will never get a dollar. I understand why it sucks because you're like, well, even though I've got my shit together, I could still do with extra $1,000, a couple thousand dollars. I totally get that. But I just think you have to maybe look at your brother's situation. Is he actually struggling or is he taking advantage of your parents? And maybe that's a bigger conversation you have with your mum and dad. It's like at this point, he is never going to stop relying on you because you just keep giving it to him.
Starting point is 00:24:35 Enabling. Yeah, he's got no reason to go out and get a job. We covered a very similar situation like this actually on off-cuts last week. And so it's very relatable. Like, you know, there's going to be families where one sibling is going to go through divorce and maybe lose a lot of money, have kids. They're going to need more, right? And maybe that sibling is the one that gets money for a house deposit or gets given an apartment or maybe gets given some $1,000 or a car or something, you know what I mean? because they're going through a financially distressing time and they've got dependence and children. Like I'm picturing this kind of like situation. And then the other sibling is single, is financially stable, doesn't have dependence.
Starting point is 00:25:18 And it feels it feels completely unfair, right? Because it's like, well, you've given this person this much money and I've gotten this much money. But I think it comes down to the standard and quality that you're living. Like if you don't need the help, what do you do with the extra money? put it into the bank and go on a holiday. Everyone can always do with money. I get that. I know, but I think for me it's like, who needs it more? And as a parent, you have to make the decision which of my children need it more because
Starting point is 00:25:41 we don't have an endless supply of everything. And that even comes down to like your focus and your attention. And sometimes, you know, I've had this conversation with other parents who have children who have disabilities. And they're like, it is a reality that my child who has a disability needs more. They need more. And they will forever need more because they will never be. able to move out of the house and live in a life that's completely autonomous in the same way
Starting point is 00:26:06 that my other children can live it. There's many ways that my child can be autonomous who has a disability, but it is not the same. And they will always require more of me. And so, like, as a parent, you will help your child that needs more. Totally. I don't know. It's really tricky, but I want to keep going back to saying that, like, I understand why it feels unfair. It is a little bit unfair, but also, like, it's a really hard position that your parents are in and they're not doing it because they don't love you. Yeah. All family dynamics are so different.
Starting point is 00:26:31 I'd be interested to know from you guys. I'm sure so many of you have been in this situation where like one of your siblings has gotten more money or you've received more money and it's caused this kind of disruption in your family. Send us your stories and send us your version of what has looked like fair in your household in your family dynamics because I think that that's a really, it's a really interesting peek behind the curtains as to how other people manage these situations. Okay, next question. How do I tell a friend their content is terrible?
Starting point is 00:26:58 How would you tell your best friend in the most loving way that her business content is too obviously made with AI? My friend and her husband run a home modeling company and it's going really well for them. However, I have noticed their ads and even posts lately have all been AI generated. To a point where they aren't even showcasing their own results and work anymore, but AI generated images. I feel like I should say something because if I was a customer, I would find this really off-putting. Would you say something? And if so, how would you raise this with her in a loving and caring way without offending her? There is nothing worse than meta's generated ads at the moment.
Starting point is 00:27:36 You set up an ad as a business, like in the back end of your meta account. You might create like a beautiful campaign that you've photographed from scratch. And then you upload the image. And meta's like, hey, how about you try these versions of the ad? And it like AI's your face and creates like different variants. But they are all. They're so bad. It happened to us with Tony May with our end of financial year sale.
Starting point is 00:27:57 And I, um, the ad was me. So, oh my God. The ad was me doing a piece to camera being like, hey guys, like I end of financial sale, Tony May, blah, blah, blah. And we uploaded it. And then there was these AI generated options. And we were all laughing about them in the office. It looked like me, but my hands, both my hands were kind of like a bit golem-esque.
Starting point is 00:28:19 There was like rings in the air. Oh, my God. And there was a confetti, like fireworks behind me. It was a static. And it kind of looked like a closing down rug sale. We were all laughing at it and Celia, who is my marketing manager, accidentally hit live on that ad. So for half the day, I didn't realize. And I was like, it went live and it was being pushed out anyway.
Starting point is 00:28:39 It was very funny. The AI slop that is going around, some of it's super convincing, some of it is really terrible. There is a fine line, a really fine line between when AI starts to look like AI. And I think when you've been using it for a little while, sometimes it can be a little bit hard to see what's really. and what feels fake, like feels like it's lost its essence and its soul. But doesn't, when you post something that's AI, I obviously have never done it, but I've seen it. Doesn't it say AI generated on like Instagram? Oh, there's loads of ways around it.
Starting point is 00:29:11 It does. Yeah, you can upload it. Interesting. What are they? So you can upload it into Photoshop and then screenshot it. That's a way of like removing. But wouldn't that decrease the quality? Yeah, but for social media, the quality is pretty low anyway.
Starting point is 00:29:21 So you can upload a screenshot to social media and it will look relatively high-res. There's definitely ways about it. You can screenshot from your phone. and re-upload, you can tweak it a little bit in Photoshop. I'm sure it's not going to be like that for forever. But what I would say is your friend is utilizing a tool that is helping her create content as a business. But she probably needs to be told that she's gone a bit too far. Like I would want to be told if I'd gone too far. AI blindness, Photoshop blindness. 100%. You know, and the fact is you get suggested things or like you might use bits and pieces that feel like it's an extension. It feels a gap,
Starting point is 00:29:56 But you should never ever be using AI to create campaigns or to create products or to create things that don't exist because I think that's when it starts to look really artificial. And also it's like quite problematic because it's replacing photographers and it's replacing people's real jobs. I think I agree. But this even goes a little bit further at this one because her business is home remodeling and it's not even showing their work. So I think it's really important that if somebody's trying to promote their business, that
Starting point is 00:30:23 is their business that they're promoting or their product or whatever. else. This is how it's so easily to be deceived now, though. It's so easy to upload something into like chat GPT and have them create an image of it, you know, or have them create or render a variant that doesn't exist yet. Like people will get a product and instead of rolling it out in X amount of colours, they'll just use chat GPT to like do the product photography for them and then they'll test it. Which I understand. There's a reason people using it's because it's quick, efficient. It saves people money. It saves people time. Obviously it comes with its problems at the same time. Look, I think you should tell her and I think it's okay to tell her. You said it's your best friend. I think you should
Starting point is 00:31:00 tell her too. I think you can tell her in a way. How would I want a friend to tell me? I think you just do it really honestly. You say like, you know, you guys are doing such amazing stuff. But I think what you would do is you would find one that specifically looks very AI and you would send that to her and say, Hey, hon, did you use AI for this so that she knows? Yeah, maybe it's just, just so you know, this looks very AI. I'm just telling you in case your other customers might notice. Maybe it's like that. I think that's the most, that's the kindest way of doing it and then you're doing it about specific content rather than it being like, hey, your entire business, your whole aesthetic looks like shit. I think when you see something that to you is like obviously AI and quite
Starting point is 00:31:39 alarming, I think that's the one that you forward to her and go, oh, hey, hon, you know, I know you're dabbling with like using AI, but I think that this is looking a little bit too far. It doesn't look real, it looks fake. Yeah. And I think that that's the kindest way of doing it. But I do think that any business and any small business owner would appreciate that feedback from their friend over hearing it from a customer or over a customer thinking it and then just never purchasing. Yeah. I think you'd have to tell her. How many times I have been sucked into, I cannot tell you. How many times, not just like funny AI content, but the number of times I have seen the most incredible accommodation, like hotel somewhere. And I have Googled it, searched it, tried to find the links and it's
Starting point is 00:32:16 taking me 20 minutes to realize that it doesn't even exist. Like someone's just like, this would be my dream hotel if I could build one. Fuck off. I get it. But I'm I'm like, if the AI content's gone too far, that's what I think. Yeah, I mean, look, I always get slammed for this comment because I know that there is a lot of dark sides to AI. Yeah. But I use AI from time to time to fill the gaps that I need help with. I would never, ever, ever use AI to substitute real campaigns, real imagery, real photography,
Starting point is 00:32:45 real products. Like, I would never, ever, ever do that. But I think if you require a very specific thing and it fills a tiny gap, like you're not going to do a whole photo shoot to make a tweak to one image. And I think that there is ways in which AI is really useful, but there are ways in which once you start using it too much, the creep is very obvious. And you can see the brands that are doing it. Recently, I don't want to say the brand, but there was a bus stop picture, right, for a brand that was a perfume. It was so bad, the AI. It was the most generated Higgs field picture where it was like a bottle of
Starting point is 00:33:17 perfume floating in the air with this Orby background and a stone below it. And it just looked like a fucking junior AI creator had made it. I felt it really ridiculous. And I was like, even for big brands like that taking it too far, I was like, that's so silly. And people can see through it. It feels soulless. It feels inauthentic. So yeah, I think use it with caution. And tell her. And tell her. Anyway, guys, that is it from us. We're out of here. Please keep your ask uncuts coming into Instagram.
