Life Uncut - ASK UNCUT - Help can I have sex with other people when I'm on a "break"?
Episode Date: July 1, 2020Time for your free therapy session lifers! We really love making these short and sharp episodes and knowing that in some way we can:A. Make you all feel a little less alone B. Attempt to give you so...me advice and guidance on whatever it is that’s bothering you, no matter how trivial or serious you think it is. Today we actually have a few questions involving sleeping with someone else whilst on a break (think Ross and Rachel from friends) we talk manscaping and how to navigate friendships as they start to take different life paths. I’d like to also put it here permanently that Laura has NO IDEA about the Ross and Rachel break scene, and I’m not sure how we can get past that. Have a great weekend guys! And share the love, because, well, we love love x-- See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hey guys and welcome back to another episode of Life Uncut.
This is the second episode of the week, the Thursday episode.
It's called Ask Uncut.
It's where you write your questions in and we answer them.
That's exactly what this is, Brittany.
I'm Brittany.
I'm Laura.
Welcome.
Every time you try something different, it really, really goes somewhere.
And I'm not sure if that place is a good place, but it does it.
Yeah, but you're not sure where it goes.
I know.
I'm on the edge of my seat every single time.
Guys, thank you to every single person who's written in a question for today's episode.
we received loads and as always we've picked out the juiciest the meatiest the sauciest the darkest
and the dirtiest of them to air with you and to flesh out between brit and i although we don't
have any qualifications in advice giving we have loads of experience and that's where the good
advice comes from look i just never know how i feel when you say we're not qualified for this
just because we've been doing a podcast for a year does not mean that there's a certificate
on the wall do you want me to write you a certificate you are not a therapist i feel like
i have enough life experience to dish out some goods i reckon you've got enough life experience
to start writing a dolly doctor column if that's if that's what really sort of tickers you under
boat you know what that's the best idea i've had i need a column someone give me a column
could you imagine hey beef it out with brit beef it out with brit yeah i haven't had time to think
it through. Brittany's breakup. This is like some great brainstorming work ideas for later. But
something we did want to touch on before we get into today's episode is. Yeah, look, this is a
tough one. It's a bit serious. But off the back of last week's episode, we literally just happened
to talk about public breakups and how they can be really hard. And there's probably a reason people
find it difficult to announce a broken up because they know the media storm that comes with it and
They know their privacy will be gone.
And yeah, one week later,
Carlin and Angie from The Bachelor have announced,
sadly, that they are parting ways
and that they have broken up.
And that has been speculated for quite a while.
But yeah, they have publicly come out and said
that they are going their own ways
and they wish nothing but the best for each other.
So I think, yeah, that's pretty good timing
for that to come off, you know,
what we discussed last week.
And I hope that people give them their privacy
and let them get on with their life in peace
because it's going to be a really tough time for them.
it's such a big step to publicly put it out there. Cause I think that that's the final nail in the
coffin when you have to, I mean, obviously you go through a breakup personally and you would
share that with your friends and family, but then to have to publicly put that statement out there,
it takes a lot of courage. And I think it would be a really, it'd be a really heartbreaking time
for both of them. So, I mean, I know that it's difficult because they've shared so much of their
lives in the public eye to then feel as though, you know, to that now ask for privacy seems to
some people seems like that's not a fair thing but I think that everybody is entitled to some
level of privacy in their life yeah I mean I'm I'm sad it didn't work out it was I love that season
I don't think that just because you're in the public eye means that the public are entitled
to every part of your life like you could be a public figure and you're still entitled to
live your life how you want in privacy you just don't have to share every single intimate detail
but I think that that's um I think that's often forgotten and confused because I think people
feel like they know you and they're entitled to know every single thing and for you and I it's
different because we overshare well that's why I think it's an interesting debate I mean when
you're in the public eye and you do share so much of your life you give followers this appetite and
the reason why they're invested in you is because you do share so much of your life so then when you
turn around and say oh well I want privacy now I don't want to share this I do think that sometimes
there can be this questioning of like well you you make money from Instagram you share so much
of your life we're invested in you so you can't pick and choose I can I think it's an interesting
debate that some people feel as though they're entitled to know more when maybe they're not but
yeah I mean at the end of the day everybody is human and everybody has feelings and I guess this
is this is going to be a really hard time for both of them that they have to work through
in probably the only way they know how yeah well good luck to them there we go well on that note
onwards and upwards let's get into the questions let's get straight to it this is our quick episode
so brit hit it off girls i messed up don't we all i really really big time messed up like proper
messy i had sex with my partner's flatmate when my partner and i were broken up now we're back
together i often have to see him and the flatmate simultaneously at the flat help do i tell him
what do i do do i pretend it didn't happen oh so the boyfriend now has no idea that it happened
So she was with a boyfriend, just like her and a partner,
and the partner had a flatmate.
They broke up.
She had sex one night with the flatmate.
Must have been out or something.
Then she's gotten back with the partner.
She doesn't know if she should tell him that she had sex with his flatmate
when they were split up.
Yikes.
Yikes.
That is a real pickle dickle, guys.
Look, if we're going to – I'm going to take the moral high ground here.
I think relationships need to be based on trust
and they need to be based on open communication.
and I think that you have to tell your boyfriend
because he would not want to be living in a household
where he knows that his housemates had sex with you.
And at the moment, your boyfriend is the one that's left out of this.
Like everybody else there knows a secret
and the person that you're supposed to confide everything in
and have this trust with, he's the one that's being left out.
Okay, so I'm just going to pose this question to you
so we flesh this out in live time.
if it was a one once off one night drunk they were out they regret it she's back in love with
a partner she knows that she's going to tell him it's going to tear them apart tear the friendship
apart she probably won't be with him anymore do you still think she should tell him but can you
guarantee that he's never going to find out that's the thing you're taking this risk by not telling
him there's always going to be this risk that he's going to find out another way and that is from his
housemate or from one of his housemates friends you don't know and if he finds out from another
way you're never going to be able to repair that because you lied whereas if you're honest about
it I feel like there is some there's some potential possibility of repairing it I just don't envy this
girl on the position she's put herself in it is so shit I'm just trying to think about it I like
I literally don't know I want to be I want to be exactly like you and I want to say yeah it's
It's based on honesty and you messed up,
but you didn't do anything wrong in terms of you were together.
Hang on.
You obviously want to say something.
Okay, okay, okay, okay.
So I'm saying that's my answer based on taking the moral high ground.
Is it what I would do?
Probably not.
Mate, how can I have a conversation with you
when you flip and switch like that?
Oh, look.
Okay, you've told us the moral high ground route,
which we know because that's what you would do
when you're on your moral high ground,
but you're not giving her her actual advice yet you're like this is what I'd do if I was naughty
this is what I'd do if I was good you find your own way well I I think I think like you know black
and white what is the right thing to do and the right thing to do is to tell him because there's
a very good chance he's going to find out and if he finds out from anyone but you that's going to
be a shit sandwich that you're not going to want to be on or eat or anything anyway if you tell him
obviously that brings its own dramas there's a possibility that he's not going to want to be
with you but I do think that there is a pretty good possibility that you guys could talk it
through depending on how long you've been broken up for whether it was done in spite all that sort
of stuff would I tell my boyfriend no I would take a risk because I'm an arsehole
but I think it's going to be very difficult for you to be around his house and maybe
you guys need to play the away game more often and your boyfriend needs to come to your house
I have another little like throw a spanner in the works situation it also makes a difference if the
partner and the flatmate are they just flatmates or are they best friends because that is another
level if they are just flatmates they just live together they occupy a space they're not they
don't share secrets they're not deep they're not bffs forever for life I think you could try to
coax him out of the situation and maybe to move in with you or move in with someone else because
you can't be in that environment so if there's no attachment there and you guys are in that
position maybe you can be like hey like maybe we should think about moving in together I don't know
where you're at but I do think that if you're going to continue to go to this house and be in
this situation I think you need to probably tell him but what I would recommend is telling the
flatmate first that you're going to tell him I would go to the flatmate and say hey look I can't
keep this a secret anymore and I want to be honest with him to make the best of it because you can't
spring that on him either go to him tell him the situation and then yeah be honest with your
boyfriend it was a huge mistake you guys weren't together it wasn't in the house and it's one thing
that you regret forever you really want to make it work with your partner hopefully he can see past
that and this is the shit part of this whole situation and what you already know actions have
consequences and whether or not like you're in the right or the wrong because you were single and you
could do whatever you wanted, but knowing that there was a possibility that you're going to get
back with your boyfriend, or there was a potential, even the slightest potential that you guys could
repair your relationship. Like this is a situation that has happened and there are consequences to
it. So I do think that it's unfair to lie to your partner. I can totally understand why you're
wanting to keep this to yourself. And I understand why there's secrecy. I just don't think that this
environment is going to be healthy. And I think that it's definitely got the potential to implode
in a way that's going to backfire in your face massively
if you're not honest.
Yeah, okay.
We've got there.
We've got there in a roundabout way, but I think we both agree.
Take the moral high ground.
Take the moral high ground and it's going to suck so hard.
It's going to be the suckiest thing to happen to you this week for sure.
I'm really scared.
Can you please write in and tell us how this goes?
Oh, yeah.
Because this whole thing sounds like a disaster right now.
Yeah.
We're not helping, are we?
No, I wish you luck.
Farewell, dear friend.
Okay.
all right question number two that was really that was so hard please don't give me another
one like that I did tell you I was gonna come out hot out of the gate hot today yes usually we start
with a funny one it's light-hearted we have a lol keep you on your toes you know I think feel like
you're just a bit complacent sometimes well I really got blindsided I didn't know how to answer
that I was like take the moral high ground be an asshole okay so the second question Laura I think
just like really compliments the first one so I'm pretty chuffed that I did that is it okay to sleep
with other people while you're on a break from your relationship that's it that's short and sharp
no the answer is no i think yes no oh my god are we ross and rachel from friends i don't know i
don't watch that show oh oh god i don't know that we were on a break situation we were on a break
i don't know what you're talking i can i can guarantee every listener right now is picking
their jaw up off the ground that Laura has no has no idea what we're talking about I'm okay I'm
gonna show it to you later but move on what I'm kind of deducing from that is that having sex with
somebody else when you're on a break is really dangerous and it creates very messy very very
messy situations I think if you are on a break when you decide to go on a break with someone
you need to very clearly define what that means does that mean that you're allowed to have sex
with other people if you've both said that's okay then absolutely if you haven't defined that then
that is a gray area that you do not want to mess with because I when I think of a break we should
do an episode on a break let's do it like that's a good idea I'm here for it so when I think of a
break I think you are having troubles in your relationship so you're going away to work on your
on yourself and to think about what you want in your relationship to come back and make a decision
you're not going out to try with other people have lots of sex get your fix and then come back and be
like oh actually i really liked having sex with joe from the bakery so love bakeries
yeah having sex with somebody else on a break and using that as a technicality is kind of a
dickhead thing to do whilst i said straight up yes you can have sex on a break i agree with you
that it definitely has to be clear you just have to clarify what your break is is it a break where
you say i just need some space for a couple of days babe like i just need some space no you can't
go and have sex with someone because like no straight up um but if it's like I love you we've
been together for a long time but we need to see what else is out there and maybe in a month or two
we can come back to each other but let's do our own thing if it's a if it's a do our own thing
and revisit it in two four six months yeah go and do what you want because you've agreed that
you're going to go and start you obviously you're testing what your relationship is or you're trying
to see if what you think you have is actually what you have you might have a grass is always
greener moment but it's just about being open you can't say I need some space for a week and have
sex with someone straight up no but if you say yes I want to explore other things but hopefully
you and I figure it out we just need I think a lot of couples do that when they're in long
relationships so a lot of couples that are like seven ten years when they started young I think
that's when it's really common so like I'm talking 16 17 year olds that start dating and they date
for a really long time they get to this point where they're like i love you so much and i want
to be with you but a part of me needs to know what else is out there it's super common i'm not saying
it's okay but i know it's common and then a lot of couples go and do their thing for a while
to see what else is out there in the world or to experience it then they come back and get on with
life well it's totally okay if both people are on board and that's what they've communicated like
there's nothing wrong with having a break if both people are stoked for that and then they want to
go out and explore what else is out there but I think I think saying I'm not happy in this
relationship and I need some time away from you and I want to go on a break and not defining what
the rules are and then having sex with somebody else is wrong because the way that I see a break
and maybe it's different for each person but the way I interpret it is that the reason why you're
having a break is because you're trying to figure out whether or not you want to be with that person
and you just want a little bit of time away from them otherwise just break up with them if you want
to go have sex with other people break up and then get back together don't go on a break I also that's
why I think it'd be great to do an episode on it because I think a lot of people I think a lot of
people get the two terms confused or they use one as a cover-up for the other so I think a lot of
people want to say break because they're not ready to face the fact that they're breaking up and vice
versa do you know what I mean yeah but that's like a cowardice way out of it it's a soft break almost
and what that does is it then causes confusion because it gives somebody hope that you're going
to get back together it gives somebody this like false sense of security that everything's going to
be okay and one person's out having sex and the other person's at home waiting for them to figure
out what they want and what their feelings are I think it's a super dangerous territory I am not a
fan of breaks I never have been I'm pretty I've always been pretty clear-cut and this came as a
result of being really burnt by the whole idea of a break where my boyfriend I went on a break
I thought it was a break and he thought it meant he could have sex with other people
so you were ross and rachel yeah it was very misunderstood but also that's where my belief
is that you have to define the rules of what the break is and if it sounds like you're breaking up
don't treat it like a break treat it like a breakup i would just go to him and say hey
do you want to see other people ask him do you want to see other people because i don't even
know if you're saying you want to do it or if you're asking because he's told you he wants to
do it just say do you want to see other people both of you are going to be tiptoeing around it
because you don't want to hurt each other's feelings you're probably both as confused and
unsure as each other because that's generally what happens in a break ask him straight up be honest
and be honest with your answer if you want to sleep with someone else which maybe you do tell
him say yeah I think I think I want to do my own thing for a few months and or you could say I don't
want to sleep with someone else but if the opportunity comes up I want to know that it's
okay to like I just want to have the conversation and establish the ground so that I know if it ever
does happen it's okay the key there and probably the take-home from this question is like you have
to be honest and you as much as these conversations are awkward and they hurt people's feelings and
they make people feel insecure I think it's so important to define it and and say exactly what
you want and make sure that you understand what your partner wants when you're on a break
because otherwise you're going to get so hurt or they're going to get so hurt and there's going to
be deceit there's going to be lying and it's going to make it impossible for you to be able to
rebuild that relationship if you decide to do it later down the track yeah have you ever been on a
break have you been on a break like where you've agreed to be on a break and seeing other people
the only time i've ever been on a break was with my first or second long-term boyfriend we were
together for a really long time and he had moved i had thought that we were exclusive he had moved
and he had kind of taken the move as us doing long distance
and us doing long distance as though we were no longer exclusive.
And then I moved to be with him and then I found out he had not been exclusive
for the whole time that we'd been doing long distance.
And it was this lack of conversation and this lack of clarity.
And this high level of arsehole-ism.
And a lot of fuckboyery where, yeah, where I was like, okay,
we were totally on a different page.
And we never recovered from it, I don't think.
I think that that really soured the whole relationship.
You're engaged to Matt.
I'm pretty sure you two never recovered from it, Laura.
We never recovered from it.
Okay, so it's time for Laura to let that one go.
There we go.
Anyways, I'm getting married next to you guys.
Can't wait for that podcast episode.
Alrighty, question number three.
Okay, I want you to take this one really seriously, please,
because someone's having a lot of trouble in their life
and they need our help.
Okay, are you focused?
I'm focused.
Okay.
Help. Oh God, this one's going to be a doozy, isn't it? Every time I go down on my boyfriend,
it's like a jungle. There's hair everywhere. It gets in my mouth, in my teeth. And I find that
I don't want to go down on him anymore because it's a nightmare. How do I ask him or politely
tell him to manscape? Wow. Guys have no issue with telling girls that they prefer you shaved
or whatever waxed or bald or guys are so happy to tell you exactly what they want I love to tell him
love to go traveling love to go on that landing strip oh wow that's a lot I vomited in my mouth
we all know we have the landing strip now I don't no one's ever said that to me you don't know what
a landing strip is yeah but I don't have one so no one's ever said I want to land on your landing
strip oh no one has said to me either I was just trying to make a lol tough crowd today um to me I
don't think this is hard if this is your boyfriend I'd be like babe sort that out I would just tell
him I would I don't think I'd beat around the bush get it you can do it in a very tactful way
where you explain to him that you really like going down on him you really like pleasuring him
however this makes it a bit difficult and less enjoyable for you and I think if you entice him
in that way he's definitely not going to be offended by it he's gonna be like I will
I will shave that thing bald turkey let's go baby you got two other options you start bringing
toothpicks into the room or you cut it off when he's asleep um no I just I just think be honest
yeah just say look um I'm uncomfortable with it I don't find it enjoyable and I think I would
enjoy it more and I would do it more tell him that you would do it more if it was maintained
actually I have a really funny story which is something similar so my best friend when we were
younger was a guy and he had a conversation with his brother basically he'd seen his brother like
as a young adult pretty nude from the waist down and was like dude what are you doing like
why haven't you don't shave you don't fix anything up you just let it go hang on this is the older
brother talking to the younger brother yeah he was like you just let it go wild and his younger
brother was like yeah well what do you reckon I'm gonna do shave it he was like yes yes shave it
or trim or something but he didn't know because nobody had ever told him that guys maintain their
pubic hair so maybe this guy doesn't know that that's just a thing that men do because maybe
they don't talk about it but also maybe he's trying to bring back all natural maybe he's
bringing back the full bush i mean it's not for me so anyway i do think that's easy i we're joking
around and we're having fun with it because it is funny but just have the conversation just say
you'll enjoy it more and um yeah you'll you'll get he'll get more action this is the same for
every single thing in every single relationship communication's key if you don't ask for what
you want you don't get it and i think that there's like a more respect and there's a deeper level of
connection when you're able to talk about everything and anything so just tell him he
needs to shave his ball sack okay so question four which is the final question final question
ring a ding ding and i feel like this is something you'll be able to answer far more than me recently
one of my best friends has had a baby i have been there every step of her pregnancy constantly
checking in asking questions i've been so excited to become an auntie although towards the end of
her pregnancy it felt like we were just drifting apart and she was gravitating more to her other
friends who were also pregnant. At the time, I thought this was normal that she would do that
because they can give each other advice and they're going through the same thing. Totally fine.
However, since the baby has been born, I have tried numerous times to catch up. I understand
that mums are busy and that priorities change. However, I feel like she has always got time to
go for coffee or a drink with her mum friends and when I suggest we hang out or I suggest that I pop
in to see them, all of a sudden she can't make it and she never even suggests another time that
might suit her. It's been four months since the baby was born and I've only seen them both a
couple of times. Should I tell her how I feel or is this something that just happens with friendships
and getting older and when people have babies? Should I just leave it? I don't want to be as
selfish and ruin this special bubble she's in but it's worrying me. I'm gonna give advice from
somebody who's had a baby in the last year and I hope that people who listen to this don't think
that I'm I'm like making excuses um but I guess I guess like for myself before I had Marley I
thought that I would be able to have my old life still I thought everything would kind of be the
same and a baby would just slot in but it definitely wasn't like that everything changed
and I really needed support from people who had children as well so I spent a lot of time
with Matt's sister I spent a lot of time with my sister because they both had babies it's a really
really stressful and hard time and it's it gives you support and it makes you feel better knowing
that somebody else is going through it at the same time and you can ask them questions and bounce off
each other and there is a feeling of support and community when you have friends who also have
babies and you're going through that because it's a huge life shift it changes everything
the other thing I just want to kind of touch on is you said that it's been four months since the
baby was born and she seems like she's always going out for coffee and having a great time
four months is still really in the thick of it. Um, it doesn't, I don't know anybody who has a
four month old baby who is like going out for coffee and having a great time. You're still
really, really exhausted. You're still so sleep deprived. You're still trying to figure out what
this new life is and how this baby fits in and how you spend time with your partner and your
friends. And everything is very, very stressful. And so I do think maybe your friend is not trying
to purposely push you out, but she may be struggling to fit you in right now because
her life doesn't make sense. I have a lot of babies in my life. All my friends have babies
and I'm an auntie, you've got nieces and nephews. So I am lucky that I'm at a point where I totally
get it and would never judge a friend if they couldn't catch up with me because I just know
how hectic their life is. I can empathize with this girl because her life, and I'm just trying
to look at both sides here but this friend's life has also been turned upside down because she's in
a way lost her best friend and the way she's written this question in she's been so supportive
of her friend she's like I don't even want to ruin her bubble I don't want to bother her but I just
want to see them and she's trying to do all the right things and I don't think it's not coming
from a jealous place I think she's realizes that you know life is evolving and moving on and she's
feeling like she's being left behind and I think a lot of people would feel that I felt that a lot
with my friends when they all started to have babies oh it's not because I know they don't
want to see me it's because like you said they did get limited time to actually go and do something
or a small window of opportunity and they're just choosing to do that with people that they can have
a shared experience with so they're just choosing to fill their limited time with someone that they
can unload on share their experiences cry on ask questions about how their baby's doing and things
like that so I don't think it's at all personal yeah and I guess like the thing that I wanted and
was trying to drive home with that is that when you're at the four month mark with a newborn baby
you don't have this like unlimited wealth of time I like I really I would be so surprised if she is
and always has time to go out for coffee or go out for drinks with her other friends who have
babies I think that maybe you're seeing that from your skewed lens I do genuinely think that that
you're still really really in the thick of it at that point in time but there's no reason why you
can't say to your friend that you miss her and that you feel like you haven't been able to spend
time with her and with the baby and that can you do anything like and I know that it's it's very
straining on some relationships and some friendships when one person has a baby and the other doesn't
because it seems like everything becomes about the person who's had the baby but I just can't
stress how much it changes their life in every single way I guess like the friendships that work
and the friendships that live through that period are the friends who are understanding and are
supportive and you know four months still isn't a very long time I think when you get to the one
year mark that's when you're like hey your kid's one year old you should have your shit together
by now but fuck it's fucking hard work when you've got a four month old I think she'll come back
around I think she just needs a time exactly like Laura said definitely message her or call her
and just say hey I just want you to know like I totally miss you I'm always here for you if
there's anything I can do to ever help you out I know times are probably really stressful for you
um I just want you to know that I'm here when you're ready and I really miss I miss you and
I miss our friendship 100% I think that that's all you can do and I guess acknowledge that for
a while your friendship will have changed you can't go out for dinners like you used to be
able to you can't go out to the club you can't do the things that you would have been able to do
so there is going to be a period where you have to go to her house all the time or you have to
do things around the baby's sleep schedule or napping schedule and I know that's super annoying
for people who don't have kids but once you kind of do have a kid you get it you're like oh I get
it guys Laura and I see each other Laura and I see each other more I see more than anyone but I
haven't seen Laura without Marley that's not I'm not saying that's a bad thing but I'm saying that
that's just what friendships are if if you get to a point where she has a baby that's just that's
what it is we hang out and Marley hangs out with us and we love that unfortunately for Britt we do
everything on my schedule like Britt's the one who has to change work change her rosters like
she's the one who has to be so much more accommodating than me because I have a baby
who has a bedtime that's 6 30 p.m and she has to be parented by someone so if Matt is busy
so if matt's busy and can't take her then the the onus is on me so i do require my friends to have
a greater level of flexibility around me and maybe that makes me an arsehole like i get it
sometimes i feel like an arsehole but it's just this period of life after you have a kid
there's like a year window where things kind of it is the most important thing in your world
it's just like it's just compromise and the time will come where you are going to need her and
100 yeah and hopefully she'll be there for you as well but I think at this stage it's not what
you're feeling is normal definitely want you to know that yes things are not going to be the same
probably ever because even when you do get back to your friendship it'll never be exactly what it was
but I think it's really important now you just tell you there for her give her her space and
just let her ride ride it out a little bit it's still four months this is her time unfortunately
and you need to be there for her and I hope she can still at least give you an ear I hope you can
still call her if you've got something that's really troubling you because you still have to
have a friend you can lean on for sure it's just going to be a little bit different for a while
and yes you you maybe feel like you're going 80 in this friendship and it's not 50 50 but it will
swing back around and when you have a baby if you have a baby one day she'll be there to support you
yeah like when i have a baby i'm just going to drop it off at laura's and be like bitch you owe
me 100 no anyways guys that is it for today's episode that is four questions it is our quick
