Starting point is 00:00:00 Hi guys and welcome back to another episode of Life Uncut. I'm Brittany and I'm Keisha but I'm not going to be here for long because this is a little bit of a different guest episode that we would usually drop on a Friday. Yeah this is um something we haven't done before a little bit different but basically i'm best friends with kim kardashian now so so she deserves her spot on the podcast yeah some of you might have heard last week when we sat down with ryan john dunn and brit kind of left not even just a little bit of a breadcrumb she just said like oh i actually was meant to be interviewing kim kardashian tonight but plans kind of changed but then it all kind of ended up happening and oh yeah can you talk us through the behind the scenes of like what this
Starting point is 00:00:52 is how it came about and how it ended up going it has been a wild ride i was in italy with ben and if you guys have seen on my instagram i posted a video where i was like guys i just got asked to interview the biggest person in the world so disney as in like disney plus called me and asked if i would be free and keen to do these these huge interviews so basically ryan murphy who we've spoken about the podcast before he is the creator of like all the monsters and jeffrey dharma and all of those shows he has a brand new tv series called all's fair that has come out on disney plus and hulu and this is like kim kardashian's first lead as an actor in a series because kim's an actor now she did american horror story she's done actually kim's actually an actor now well
Starting point is 00:01:35 what is she what like what really what doesn't that woman she's like a lawyer she there isn't much that she doesn't do a billionaire a mom i guess you can be these things on your she's she's amazing yeah so it's got this incredible cast so the leads are kim kardashian icon glenn close like glenn close if you guys don't know who she is you're probably a younger listener that maybe i don't know maybe you haven't seen anything that she's been in but most of you would know like we grew up with her being an integral part of hollywood she was one of those people that were like oh you're just an amazing actor that's gonna have all these awards So Glenn Close, Naomi Watts, Australian, Sarah Paulson,
Starting point is 00:02:15 also an incredible actor, and Niecy Nashbetts, who is also incredible, like all of these women. Anyway, so it's these five powerhouse women that are lawyers and they sent me the cast list and they said, do you want to interview them? And I nearly keeled over. I was like, sorry, what? I was like, little old me.
Starting point is 00:02:32 I was like, me, Brittany from Paul McQuarrie? They were like, yeah, do you think you'll be free? So I was like, obviously played it cool. I was like, let me check my schedule. Let me find out. I was like, I'm just going to check my schedule and clear some stuff. Anyway, my agent, Alyssa, I was like, lock that in. And I know that I've been talking about it the last week or two.
Starting point is 00:02:51 Unfortunately, and I think I couldn't say that it wasn't on the podcast. I couldn't say what it was for, but it's not a podcast interview. So we didn't get Kim Kardashian to come and sit down with Life Uncut, although I tried and that would be the dream. But I did have the opportunity to interview these people. So we thought, of course, we're going to put that on the podcast. like this is for me I don't know if I'm hormonal this was just this I'm like when you just say little old me it's actually so true I was sitting down and they're like Kim will be here in three
Starting point is 00:03:21 two and I was like wait I was like Kim Kardashian knows my name I was like what is my life and I had this moment where I was like wow I'm so lucky and I said that to somebody in the team and I said wow I'm so lucky like thank you for having me here and they were like lucky they're like you've been interviewing for six years and there's a part of you that's like oh I should actually pretend that I'm used to doing this that like this is something that I'm really comfortable yeah I was trying to play well I am comfortable with it but I still felt really lucky that I got asked to do it but something that they said was really cool they were like you've been doing this for six years you have done hundreds of interviews and I thought wow you know what I have it's like yes it's lucky that
Starting point is 00:04:00 they asked me but also luck comes from preparation and opportunity so like I've done this for a long time, but I just, it's so easy to sweep that under the rug and not work. It's also easy to not stop and actually smell the roses and like congratulate yourself for certain professional achievements. And I know that we're all so guilty of doing that because, you know, you just, everything just moves so quickly, especially in content world and things kind of opportunities come. And like, if you don't snap it up in that moment, sometimes you can feel as though it's, it's going to be lost. And that almost did happen. Cause there was a time where you were going to fly to LA yeah and then plans kind of like it was very on the nose you were like I don't know I could be
Starting point is 00:04:35 flying out tonight I'm not really sure what's happening yeah so originally I was flying out to the premiere and I was going to do premiere over in LA and I was going to do all the interviews live which was amazing but I did have to change a lot of work around to do that like that's a whole another thing which is fine I was working it out but Kim wasn't able to lock in if she was going to be able to do it with her schedule until just before so it was like Kim's in Kim's not in we're unsure if Kim's in Kim's in and and I was like wow like this is hectic I was changing so many interviews um I was trying to organize teddy swims I was like oh my god um anyway so basically I said hey look I won't fly over yeah and let's just see and if they lock in they lock
Starting point is 00:05:19 in and then I'll just do it here with the setup and um part of me now is like fuck I should have just flown over man like imagine I would have hugged her I would touch her I don't know if security would have let you but you ended up kind of all I remember it was hearing from you was saying that because it was actually a weekend that you were looking after my dog and you were like I was like Bonnie's gone to the pound I was like she's gone back I've got to go at like four o'clock in the morning you know obviously we've got time zone differences and it was on like a Saturday morning or something super random and it all ended up eventuating and I got a text from you at like 6 30 going it was great yeah so I did it all here and I got to interview all of them which was really
Starting point is 00:05:58 really cool and it was you know what it was weird because I was so excited and I think it's because these women not only as somebody like I've always wanted to act right I've always wanted to be in entertainment since I was a teenager and being able to just be in the presence of these women that are just such incredible actors like this has got nothing to do with Kim Kardashian being the most famous person. Like the Glenn Closes and the Naomi Watts and Sarah Paulsons, like these people have just achieved so much in their life. And they're very inspirational, especially someone like Naomi. Naomi talks a lot about, it wasn't actually easy for her. Like it wasn't something that she just fell into really young and that got handed things. She nearly quit. She actually
Starting point is 00:06:42 nearly quit until Ryan Murphy, he's put her in like five of his projects. And she's like, wow, everyone tells you that you're going to get aged out. And her career started a little bit later. Her career has taken off since she started talking about menopause really openly and all of these things. And I think that's cool. But yeah, there was a moment where I was like, wow, I can't believe I get to do this. This is like a dream. This is a bucket list.
Starting point is 00:07:03 These are the biggest interviews I've ever done. And what I found really interesting, and I felt that way about Kim Kardashian as well, but obviously not from her acting career. She's new from the fact that she is one of the biggest, most famous, well-known people in the world. Like she just is, right? And she's one of those people that I don't think there's anyone reported on in the news or social or culturally as much as the Kardashians.
Starting point is 00:07:27 And so that was really cool where I was like, wow, I'm going to get to sit and talk to her. And then the really interesting thing is, is that I didn't feel nervous, which was interesting. And then at the end of it, I just felt like I had spoken half an hour with my friends and I, I walked away and I thought, wow, this is just a reminder. they're just people and they're all incredible people but they're just people they're just people that have incredible jobs and are really beautiful and filthy rich and very successful exactly the same as us but you I guess you forget that like they just seemed very normal they were all really really likable and really kind and uh sometimes they also have potty mouths on them oh they're
Starting point is 00:08:11 they so so the way that this is going to work is that Brit initially sat down with Naomi Watts and Sarah Paulson and the start of that interview was very, very funny and then the second half of this is Kim Kardashian, Glenn Close and Niecy Nash sitting down and being interviewed by you as well. What I will say is I've never been spoken to like that in my life. So the part that won't quite make sense is that the two of them were talking about a particular thing and as Brit kind of clocked into the interview, that audio came through.
Starting point is 00:08:43 That's how it starts, yeah. And you thought you got called a C-bomb. The first word they said to me was cunt. Have a listen. Hi, cut. Hi, cut. Is that how we greet each other? Hi, it's been a while.
Starting point is 00:08:58 It's so nice to meet you. Hello, sorry. What I meant was country living is so nice. I was going to say it's so great to come to you guys from another country as well, so thank you for having me. We've been told not to use that word. We're not using the word, but yeah. Naomi Woods.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Sarah Paulson, it's an absolute pleasure, despite what you just called me. What initially drew you to this project? I saw the trailer, and I am just thrilled for you guys. I want to be another attorney in there. I'm hook, line, and sinker. What excited you the most? I mean, the people. I mean, Ryan calls us, and we just say yes.
Starting point is 00:09:38 It just happens instantaneously, unless you're dumb, which neither one of us are, and no one is also on the show and also just the lineup of women and then an opportunity to tell the stories of women of a certain age at a particular time in their lives where they have a lot of wisdom to offer and empathy and also strength
Starting point is 00:09:57 and, you know, things like that. Who's always going to say the worst? We've not a lot to say. How many cocktails have you ladies had tonight? We've had one. Zero. zero it's called this is just we've been doing this all day and so now we're like yeah hello well women supporting women is obviously a really key theme to all's fair in your life has there
Starting point is 00:10:23 ever been this crucial critical instrumental moment with a woman that has lifted you up that's changed the situation you're in or changed the course of your life I mean I feel like I've had that at every point in my life, women have saved me over and over again. I surround myself with women. I don't understand women that don't have women friends. And there, there are some out there and I have women who are not just there to hold my hand, but to challenge me and, you know, help me rise up. And, you know, I think it comes from having strong women raise me, starting with my mom, who's like fierce. And I actually have as a result been one to try and take up less space because I've grown up watching this larger than life character but my grandmother
Starting point is 00:11:10 also the matriarch of our family and my mom has two sisters so I've always been drawn to strong intelligent women throughout my life who've definitely helped me. I was just about to say what about you Sarah? I've been saved again and again and again by my female friends and I feel really blessed to have friendships that have lasted 30, 35 years. One of my best friends since I'm 11 years old was at the premiere last night, you know, who has children of her own now, who's, you know, still one of my absolute closest friends. So I've just been very, very lucky that way. And I know how lucky it is. And also I'm friends with actresses. I really don't believe in this hyper-competitive notion or idea that those things can't exist.
Starting point is 00:11:57 I mean, I have one friend who we've been friends for 25 years and have absolutely had moments of difficulty or competitiveness or jealousy that we have worked through, like to Naomi's point, like someone like bring it in the room and let's talk about it because that's how the intimacy stays and grows is because you're at a point where it's like, I'm not willing to lose you over something like this, but I do want to know how you feel and vice versa. So it's been incredibly fortifying and it just makes the relationship that much stronger and that much truer and it's not predicated on based on something that's a lie. It's like I just am and that is a big thing for me in my life. It's like trying to ride the truth train to the destination.
Starting point is 00:12:33 You can be so happy for another woman in your life and still be jealous that they may have gotten a job that you want to. Totally. It's just as long as the jealousy doesn't impede your ability to be present for them or happy for them. like I am all about like that's envy that's right it's like the green-headed monster and I welcome all kinds of jealousy and wishes and you know wishful all that kind of stuff is on the table always you know it's your human being it'd be you'd be lying to yourself so I wanted to ask you your character Carrington Lane what a name she's absolutely a loose unit she's diabolical she a loose unit I love that a loose unit I love that she's an animal was it hard to
Starting point is 00:13:12 be acting out this like cold-blooded revenge kind of character when you're actually so close with these women and you're working with them every day uh it wasn't hard at all it was one of the most thrilling experiences of my life not because i enjoyed being cruel to people but because it cruel to people didn't hear that like that's usually when there's like a lie there's like a lie probably cruel to people um but i i i think i tried to think about it from the vantage point that, you know, once you see the show, the women, Naomi's character, Kim and Nisi sort of start their own law firm and they don't take me with them. And I was at the same firm as they were in the beginning. So I sort of was left behind. And that pain has caused, you know, for some people,
Starting point is 00:13:55 it causes a person to shrink and other people, it causes those injuries, cause them to kind of lurch forward and want to dominate. And that is sort of what's happened is that Carrington is sort of motivated by a need for revenge, but it comes from a place of great pain, of having been left out, you know, some fundamental childlike feeling of being left behind. Naomi, can you let us know something to the young women listening right now that are out there hustling and grinding? What's your one piece of advice? I would say, you know, whatever your dream is, go after it. Don't compromise, but know why, you know, just ask yourself, why are you going after it? I mean, certainly for me, I wanted to throw the towel in many, many times, but, and I sort of
Starting point is 00:14:45 postured like I was going to, but I didn't know what else I loved or I didn't know what else I was qualified to do. So I just kept going and had, you know, to just rely on blind resilience and determination and um and eventually it paid off and it was a slow agonizing time for about 10 to 15 years of um but I was also like okay this is fine as long as I can cover my bills I I'm happy to be a working actor for hire and um I never knew that it would turn into what's happening now especially this last like moment in my career this last five years being with ryan murphy i really was told over and over again that your career would be finished after 40 50 for sure and and and onward and then i ran into someone like ryan murphy who has just given me you know four
Starting point is 00:15:43 incredible parts in a row which i'm very grateful for so thank god you didn't give up thank god so that would be my advice thank you thank you hang in there to the young ladies so picture this ryan calls you pick up the phone he's like ladies one of you from the cast in real life has just been arrested who is it oh just been arrested yeah who's most likely to get arrested out of you lady is it me no i don't think it's you it's not kim it's definitely not kim maybe Meecy or Tiana. Maybe Meecy or Tiana. Maybe.
Starting point is 00:16:18 Not Glenn. Not Glenn. Oh, maybe. Glenn might get arrested for a nice, peaceful protest. Yes. She might, from like a nice sit-in, she might get arrested. Okay, so then who would you send in to defend her? Who's going to bail her out?
Starting point is 00:16:32 Kim or Meecy. Yeah, Meecy. Meecy. Okay. Or Kim. Or Kim, because Kim knows all the actual legal jargon, but Meecy will just find a way to make it all happen, square it up right away.
Starting point is 00:16:42 I lost my virginity today. I've never done an interview and been called a start. So thank you. I'm going to add that to the, what? Well, we're so, I'm so happy I could pop your cherry. Thank you. Thank you. Thanks. I see what you mean when you say that they just seem so normal and likable and like, you know, incredible women, but also just so chatty and funny and engaging. And yeah, I really love that. And do you know what was interesting? There's only one moment where I got a little bit stressed
Starting point is 00:17:12 and that is because I was prepped to – When you were being called a – When I'm being called a cunt, yeah. I also hate that – I don't use that word. I know. It's the first time I've ever heard it coming out of you. But I had to roll with it and pretend I was like rolled off my tongue. You're like, I'm Australian.
Starting point is 00:17:24 We use it all the time. I was like, if Naomi and Sarah are using it, I'm going to use it. No. So you sit down in a chair like I'm in, right, and it was a big studio production so there was a whole team there. I guess when it's at that level it's very official. There's a team that's counting you in and you're in a waiting room and it's a whole thing like they're going to be with you
Starting point is 00:17:42 in three minutes till we're live and they're crossing to other people and it was, you know, it was a lot. But fine, I was ready. I knew I had prepped it. But then I was prepped to do Kim first, like Kim, Glenn and Niecy and then maybe 30 seconds out, they're like, oh, we've switched. You're not doing them. We're cutting straight to and I had my cards ready
Starting point is 00:18:06 and I had my train of thought ready because you only get a certain amount of time with them so you you don't have the time to fuck around if you want to get great questions and great conversation and so I had about 30 seconds to like wipe everything for three women's interviews in my head wipe that out and get in the zone for Naomi and so it wasn't I was like oh I was like what we're swapped and I was like fluffing around and then as soon as it opened they called me a cunt not called me a cunt but that was the word and that just it was the perfect start because it just relaxed the conversation and I just was like oh my god you guys this is easy you're so normal and you're so nice and Naomi I think being an Aussie we're
Starting point is 00:18:47 very like that but I loved it they were just they're a vibe they were such a vibe and I'm just hoping that like I can hang out with Naomi one day. I would like a long-form interview with any of them that would be fantastic but the second half of the interviews was with Glenn Close, Kim Kardashian and Nisi Nash. What did you think of them? You know what I'll say they were all incredible they were all just beautiful women and very giving in the interviews very friendly a lot of people aren't but do you know what i was thinking i was like i wonder kim kardashian she's always so stunning and perfect and put together i was like are they using all these like beauty filters are they what what's she actually like holy shit it's like looking at
Starting point is 00:19:30 the Mona Lisa she's like an oil painting it's artwork she is stunning like I couldn't stop looking at it and maybe they did have some sort of beauty filters on I don't know but she was she was beautiful and she was considered yeah and funny and relaxed at the same time and you could just tell that these women had a genuine friendship and connection that wasn't put on it wasn't for the PR trail I think they all just like fell in love with each other they're very very close and the way they were interacting it's not all in the video like there's some stuff that was off video the way that they were with each other and just talking and hanging out and laughing it's it was really real and it was really nice to see I mean there's like an intergenerational
Starting point is 00:20:16 friendship there they come from different worlds I'm sure the Glenn Close was like wow I'm going to be acting alongside this reality tv mogul I wonder what that's going to be like but they just loved and supported each other. And they were brilliant. I do not have a bad word to say about any of them. And I will say I watched the first episode. It's out now. You can go and watch it. And I loved it. I just loved it. Anyway, I'm just fucking thrilled. So have a listen. Kim Kardashian, Glenn Close, Niecy Nash Betts. What a formidable combination. I was lucky enough to also see the trailer. Hook, line and sinker. I cannot wait to see the rest of the show. What was the most exciting thing for you when this project landed on your lap?
Starting point is 00:20:53 For me, it was to know who the cast was. I was so excited to meet the ladies, work with the ladies, and unpack these characters together. That has been the biggest blessing ever and so much fun. I was so excited to hear Ryan's take on what an attorney would look like and how that would come to fruition and how he would write that. I think when he talked to me, because I'd played women who didn't particularly have great wardrobes, he said, you're going to have great clothes. You're going to have great jewels and you're going to be nice. Oh, and you get to be nice as well. What a top. So which one
Starting point is 00:21:31 have you locked in first out of the cast? Yeah. Ryan called me and had this idea was inspired by my law school journey and wanted to, he asked me if I'd ever be a divorce attorney. And I said, no, but I'd play one on TV. So he wrote this character, but what was so fun is he picked each cast member and then he wrote for them after the fact so everyone signed on without a script kim we see really early on that your character allura is with an absolute flog like what a twat in real life what what is a red flag for you in a relationship what isn't these days i was about to say if they're breathing if they're breathing you don't want it
Starting point is 00:22:23 that's so funny i think i'm kind of i i must be colorblind because i see i just see pink and orange i don't see red but i need to see red but i i would say the biggest red flag is just when someone is really not kind and rude to staff and waiters and everyone around i don't like that personality trait red flag for me is if all they want to know is about your work you're i mean you're like like hollywood oh yeah yeah red flag for me is anybody who i feel like needs me to shrink or be small so that they feel good yeah first sign of it i'm not having it you all have so many young women that look up to you and you're all so inspirational if you could give advice to a young woman right now that is entering a male dominated industry
Starting point is 00:23:19 what would your advice be find her voice i would say just keep your head down and be great and do what you do and not put too much emphasis on it just put in the work and you'll see the result in this industry you just at the beginning you just want to get a job you know you want to be able to show what what you want to be able to develop and give a job I I always tried to to say yes if you have that luxury to choose uh to things that I personally thought were was good not because you think you know blah blah blah blah blah blah because you personally thought was good you know you could that's what I've been been trying to do my whole career if you were to go in real life and start a female-led power firm and you could bring one person from your real life
Starting point is 00:24:10 one woman who would you be bringing oh nancy nancy too because i love her you know what is this because nancy's a badass or just because she's gonna bring the vibe just fills the room in the most wonderful way nancy will get anything done you and she'll have your back every step of the way she's a good not even a good woman She's a good woman and strong and funny. I paid them to say that. Kim, if you had to bring one of your sisters in, which one is it? Chloe.
Starting point is 00:24:48 Because she just, that same kind of personality will just get it done, ride or die, till the end of time. If I had to bring one person, it would be Oprah Winfrey. Oh, that's a good one. You win. You win. That game's yours. I feel like every show or project that you work on you would take away something you learn
Starting point is 00:25:10 something what would be the biggest thing you've learned from Alls Fair? I don't think it's about the biggest thing that I've learned for me it's about the biggest thing that I've gained and it's sisterhood you know like I genuinely care about these women like I love them I want to know what's going on with the kids what's going on in your personal life and the grandbaby and the you know Naomi just got a star on the walk of fame how can we show up and support you like I just feel like we are locked in and I and I love knowing you know even when my dad got sick when I was in New York you text me you had your big thing that night for skims and you were like do you need anything where are you are you okay you know so it's the sisterhood for me hypothetically the phone's ringing you pick
Starting point is 00:25:58 it up it's ryan he tells you that one of you ladies in the cast in real life has just been arrested who is it most likely to be oh my god we'd be so sure no tiana somebody's been arrested tiana i would say tiana all of you yeah well interesting because uh the other two said you nisi i was gonna say i said nisi or tiana well wait a minute time out excuse me why why me well Well, because you two have the most fun, like for some reason, you know, she's living a very fun, sexual, like with her man, like fun life that to me, that seems like they're going to the best parties. They're going to the funnest nights. no i'm just thinking why oh you to me have the we know what your afterlife partying and and with your you know wife is like it seems like you have the most like fun well i know you have the most
Starting point is 00:27:00 fun wild juicy life sex life so to me it would be for nothing crazy it would just be for both of them for i would think like a little intoxication of just you know well it was it was also glenn it was it was not murder it was also glenn but that was for a peaceful protest so you're in it's not public indecency you're okay you're in the you're in the clear i'm arrested for a peaceful protest ladies you're all brilliant i wish i had more than eight minutes but unfortunately that's all we've got i could talk to you forever thank you so much for your time today and I cannot wait to see the rest of the show. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:27:39 Thank you.
