Life Uncut - Getting back on that horse with comedian Becky Lucas - Talking failures and sh*tty life lessons.

Episode Date: June 9, 2021

What do you call a politician who accidentally zooms parliament Nude? Unlucky. What do you call a politician who accidentally zooms parliament nude again while urinating? Fired.haha if you guys think y...our day was bad, spare a thought for William Amos.Moving right along! Let's talk failure. Is it that bad?Perhaps our failures are serendipitous after all?“Everything happens for a reason.” We’ve all heard that saying and even Aristotle believed that everything happening to you today has a purpose because it turns you into the person you are becoming (gosh talk about starting off deep)So, whether you think that everything happens for a reason, or perhaps that everything happens for a lesson, we’re talking about how sometimes in life, with the beauty of hindsight, it can be the worst points in our lives that make the best stories and mould us into the people that we are.Whether it’s your horrific ex-boyfriend who broke down your ego that allowed you to rebuild it from scratch and learn what you liked about yourself, or the soul destroying job that you got fired from that ended up putting you on a different career trajectory, it’s these ‘failures’ that end up being the pivotal moments in our lives that enable us to be better. In this episode, Aussie comedian Becky Lucas joins us to chat about her life experiences that were, well, slightly less than ideal and resulted in her landing herself in a bin; literally. She speaks about the boy who made her feel like she wasn’t really good enough for him and how that made the comedy stage seem not so scary.Becky has written a funny as f*ck book titled “Acknowledgements" and it comes out tomorrow! You can find Becky on insta: @beckylucas__You can find her new book “Acknowledgements” tomorrow at all good bookstores and online. Annnnnnd if you’re one of our lifers that loves the pod, but hasn’t yet left us a sneaky little 5 star rating, please do! Starting point is 00:00:00 Hi guys and welcome back to another episode of Life Uncut. I'm Laura. And I'm Brittany. And if you think you're having a bad day, well, I have a story to share with you all. There is a politician in Canada. His name is William Amos. And William has just lost his job, guys. Just before we sat down to record this podcast, I actually read this article and I am like
Starting point is 00:00:40 low-key dying for this man. Why did William lose his job? So you might remember... I feel like that's a joke. Why did William cross the road? To get to the other side. Yeah. No, you might remember back in April, like if his name is ringing some bells for you,
Starting point is 00:00:55 back in april there was a politician in canada who got nude on a zoom call i remember him like a really important zoom call before we say that with his colleagues who were also politicians he didn't just get nude like he didn't do a strip show he was like no no no no he he said it was an accident he said he just was walking past the zoom completely naked and he was like whoops didn't know my camera was on and everyone was like oh that is so funny because that was an accident well he got into a little bit of trouble for it but i think that overall people like that's a really unfortunate thing that's happened you know look it's covid people are doing all kinds of weird things on their zoom conference calls we know we've had a few accidentally unfiltered
Starting point is 00:01:33 but he's gotten into trouble again britney what's he done don't tell me he's done a windmill or something and he's finally lost his job because of it no so yesterday instead of pausing a meeting when he needed to go to the toilet he says he thought his camera was turned off but he pissed in a cup mid-meeting with another politician on the video i call absolute bullshit this guy did not think that his video was turned off he has a fetish and it is getting nude on zoom calls you know you want to know it is it's not a fetish i don't reckon it's a fetish i reckon he loved the attention he got it was worldwide attention he loved the attention he got everyone thought he was funny it was great he probably grew his instagram who knows he probably got a sponsor
Starting point is 00:02:17 so i think he's gone to try it again and they've clued on and like you know what there's only so much nudity in politics that's allowed and we've capped it this year so you're out what sort of brand do you think would sponsor a man who pees in a cup a clothing brand a clothing brand so he puts clothes on i was like where are you an underwear brand where are you going with a company probably anyway he's brought out a statement it said last night while attending house of commons proceedings virtually in a non-public setting i urinated without realizing i was on camera said william amos a member of the prime minister's justin trudeau ruling liberal party in an apology that he posted to twitter he then went on to say i am deeply embarrassed
Starting point is 00:02:59 by my actions and the distress that they may have caused anybody who witnessed a lot of dark things have happened during covid and i think for this guy that's going to be the one that he remembers the icing on the cake isn't it look I have a question why wouldn't you just say can you excuse me for a moment to go to the toilet why would you wee in a cup in the first place like that's just weird in itself what could possibly be going on on a zoom call meeting that's so important that you do not want to miss a beat like most people would find any excuse to be able to get out of a zoom call to be able to get out of a conference meeting it's like yeah look I'm really sorry the baby's crying they're not they're asleep they're in the other room and also they're
Starting point is 00:03:35 not even here fool me once like you if you have done that at that level at like an international level you check whether you press pause or not the guy's a weirdo yeah so if you think you're having a bad week I'm here to tell you it's not as bad as poor old William Amos with his willy out in a cup but guys speaking of very embarrassing things that have happened at work this is a perfect tie-in to a bonus episode that we have for you coming out tomorrow and that is it's brought to you by stan but it is all of your most embarrassing accidentally unfiltered stories that are all work related and like let's be real we spend 50 of our lives at work and some pretty like 85 some pretty fucked up shit happens there we're gonna be telling you all about that
Starting point is 00:04:19 tomorrow's episode don't forget that is dropping tomorrow guys we're so excited because we've been wanting to bring you a bonus accidentally unfiltered episode for ages and we really did laura and i felt like we needed some laughs i'm on hormone treatment at the moment for my freezing and I have my feelings and I'm really really low I'm crying all the time I was like let's have a laugh so it's perfect timing and I can't wait for you guys to hear it but guys for today's episode we have such a great one for you today now we're interviewing someone named Becky Lucas she is a comedian and you may or may not know who she is but if you don't know who she is you may know some of the comedy shows that she has written for and she is that she was on Conan
Starting point is 00:04:54 O'Brien she is very very funny and she has a book that is coming out tomorrow and the book is called acknowledgements. And the reason why we wanted to get her on the podcast is because Becky talks about failures in her book, like the simple failures that we all experience in life and how they're actually really fundamental in making us the people that we are. And it got Britt and I thinking because it's such an important topic and it's something that I think we can all relate to. Like nobody wants to experience failure in their life. We all try and shy away from it. It's something that we do feel a lot of embarrassment by when we do fail. But the reality is, is that every single one of us is going to fail at something in our lifetime many things everything
Starting point is 00:05:33 and failure also can be the catalyst that sets your life onto a very different trajectory the fact of the matter is every single person that you know or you look up to or you want to be like the actors that you see business people that you know everyone in life I guarantee you has had a failure at some point maybe they don't talk openly about it but they absolutely have and I think it's not just failure I think it's like bad things or situations that are less than desirable I do think that they put you on a journey and on a path to where you're supposed to be and when we're unpacking this with Becky and Laura and I were just chatting about it I had this really round about way of of how I got to the place that I am right now I'm going to run you through it for two
Starting point is 00:06:15 seconds if I didn't date a sociopath for two years I wouldn't have had a meltdown I wouldn't have packed up and moved overseas for three years episode number three guys episode number three if I didn't go overseas for three years I wouldn't have had all this worldly travel behind me when I went to apply for the bachelor when I got back from this three-year journey I 100% believe the only reason I got on was because I was this worldly traveler that had a sociopathic relationship for two years that was their pull they told me they're like the travel thing is huge we know the bachelor is going to be into that and the fact that you you know dated a sociopath there's a story in that that's what got me on the bachelor then I couldn't understand why I would be so horrifically dumped
Starting point is 00:06:54 at the end of The Bachelor at the time I couldn't understand it because I went on The Bachelor I met Laura we started the podcast and now we're in love and we're having a baby but then we started the podcast and obviously this is something we absolutely love but because of The Bachelor and the podcast I got myself a blue tick now that sounds pretty wankerish but the blue tick then led me bear with me guys bear with me on this journey the blue tick led me to Raya. Raya is the dating app that you need to be accepted to be on. And Rayart, ladies and gentlemen, is what led me to what I hope is the love of my life, Jordan Thompson. And that is my roundabout way of being like, cool, all these fucked up things happened to me over a seven year period because I was
Starting point is 00:07:38 supposed to get here to this point. And I don't believe I would have gotten here without everything that happened. Well, and I think that for everybody who's listening to this, like I would love you guys to take one minute now to think about something that in your life at the time you considered a failure whether it was a relationship whether it was something that happened in work whether it was something that happened in your family whatever that was to you something that was like catastrophic at the time but now looking back on it it was an absolute blessing in disguise and it put your life into a different trajectory it put your life onto a different path and now there is so much happiness that has come as a result of something that was like maybe a bit
Starting point is 00:08:14 painful or really hard for you to work through at the time. And I, I love this as well. Like, I mean, Britain, I can talk about this all day long. Like I had a very similar experience in that, you know, I talk about my failed relationships in this podcast loads. And I think one of the reasons why I am so happy and so content in my life now is because I've had those experiences. And one of the big things that come from failure is this idea that we're able to value something. So without knowing what it is that we could lose or feeling what it feels like to fail at something you won't value something that's really great when you have it because there's a chance that you'll take it for granted so all of these things are interconnected they're
Starting point is 00:08:51 such an important part of us actually like finding the place that we're supposed to be in life and being on that journey and we are just huge advocates for this because failure is such an important part to your growth as a person it's actually an education how do you think that you learn what works and what doesn't work there's literally the only way is to if you fall down you get back up. If something doesn't work out, you're like, okay, that's not going to happen. It's not going to happen that way. Let me try a different way. And you keep trying these different ways until you get the success that you're looking for. But I also think it's a perception thing as well, because I do think that as a society, we focus really heavily on success. We look at
Starting point is 00:09:28 successful people. We hero success in the media, but we don't often hero the road that it takes to get that success. And like you said, Britt, anybody who's the top of their career, anybody who has a successful business, anyone who has a successful relationship will have had their own failures along the way and I think sometimes you really have to talk about those failures and that way it allows other people who are in a similar situation or feeling like they're not succeeding to go ah maybe there's just one step in my journey towards where I'm supposed to be well it's funny it's character building that shit it builds resilience well I got into like a chat with Jordan about this because he experiences this on another level as a tennis player they fail
Starting point is 00:10:08 and I say fail I don't mean they fail but every single week of the year they have to lose a match because they play tournaments every single week only one person can win so every single one of these athletes he's like I'm really really used to losing they are every single athlete there's only one winner every week so everyone takes a loss every single week and I remember when he had his first loss that I witnessed I was like beside myself I was like I'm so sorry like are you okay I don't know how to be here for you and he was like what are you talking about I was like well like you know you just lost I like in front of Australia so like I also have lost in front of Australia so I feel like we're soulmates and he was like babe like I lose every single week he's
Starting point is 00:10:48 like every single athlete does and he's like that's just what makes you better and you can't let that get you down and I was like far out like you take a hit every single week on a national level and you're so fine and you're learning from it and I was like that's I can't be so down on myself when you know you and I make a mistake on the podcast or something happens I'm like I can really take something from that attitude so I think like Laura said think about something now a failure that you have had and just try and tweak the way you look at it tweak the perception a little bit and if you're one of the lucky people out there that haven't really had a failure yet well I want you to go fuck up tomorrow just do it on purpose just you know crash into something
Starting point is 00:11:27 break up with your boyfriend just whatever you're doing do it wrong but I really like this quote so there is value in failure through failure you will get to know yourself better and you will learn from your mistakes failures make us rethink reconsider and find new ways and strategies to achieve our goals and the definition of failure is a lack of success however I really think you know when I look back on the things that I did wrong and my shitty relationships and where I am now in life and this is not me being like I have it figured out because I certainly don't and I still make lots of mistakes. We have not figured this out, but I don't look back on those things that at the time were really painful and really hard and think of them as failures anymore. I
Starting point is 00:12:06 think of them as like really, really pivotal, really challenging. Like they pushed me so far outside my comfort zone, but I, I look at them as really important parts of me becoming who I am. And I'm grateful for that now. Absolutely. Amen. Before we get into the interview with Becky, which I know you're going to love because I absolutely loved it and I was wetting my pants figuratively not literally don't worry. It's a real light-hearted one this episode we've had a few heavy eps and so this one is just here for the lols guys. But to kick start it we have our favorite segment accidentally unfiltered and Brittany you can go first. I want to tell you a story that has still traumatized me. Back when I was 18 I had a friends with benefits situation
Starting point is 00:12:46 and looking back I must have been going through something pretty bad because this guy was a big dropping my standards. I'm talking the kind of guy who vacuums his bed instead of washing the sheets. I love the explanation. Like he's a bad egg if he vacuums those sheets. He also didn't have a bathroom door because it fell off and he was just too lazy to put it back on. So one night I was staying over. I woke up in the middle of the night with a really bad pain in my stomach. I lay there willing it to go away. But then the hot flushes kicked in. I knew what was coming. it was going to be explosive and I really didn't want to do this in his bathroom without a door oh my god I ran outside to my car but I knew I didn't have time to drive home I was panicking
Starting point is 00:13:28 looking around everywhere my stomach was churning there was dirt so I dug a hole with my hands and I shat in the garden on the side of the street when I was done like a cat in a fucking little box I got into my car and left I didn't even cover it back up I text him saying I had period pain and i've never went back again i like that this is the reason why you broke up with him but you know what you can do better girlfriend you deserve a man who has a toilet door also cover the poo up just put some dirt over the top no one is going to stay around to try and cover their tracks they just wouldn't you just no get out of there abort mission drive drive i mean to be fair she boarded real quick I used to date a guy who didn't have like he just had his mattress on the
Starting point is 00:14:13 floor and he never put sheet like he never put a fitted sheet on his mattress so we would we would sleep on his naked mattress on the floor with just a top sheet thrown over the top of us I don't even know why he thought that was acceptable and I was and look at you now Laura you have a fitted sheet i have a fucking bed frame guys i have a bed frame and a mattress no i i don't know why i thought that that was it for me that was the man i thought i was gonna marry i was 18 at the time do you know what i forget it is i forget that what the what the condition is but there are some people i've read about that sleep on a pile of clothes like they make a nest they make a nest and it's a pile of dirty clothes and they never wash it and that's what they sleep
Starting point is 00:14:57 in. Wow. I know. Men paying in cups and men making nests with their dirty clothes. Dating in 2021 is a wild time. So what is your accidentally unfiltered today? All right here it is. Okay this one's a little bit of a long one but it's a goodie so stay with me. Okay I have the grossest and very embarrassing story that I cannot stop reliving in my head. I have had a cold for quite a while and with that has come a very runny and snotty nose. I was at the uni cafeteria area with two with my friends for lunch and I pulled out a tissue, just some toilet paper that I'd used earlier for my pocket to blow my nose. As I pulled it out, I looked at it and there was like quite a lot of dry brown stuff on it. And I said to my friend, what the fuck is that? Is that literally
Starting point is 00:15:36 what my snot looks like? My friend looked at it and she was like, oh, what? Oh, don't show me that. Anyway. So I proceed to put the piece of tissue to my nose to blow on it. And all I could smell was poo was shit i felt so fucking awkward and embarrassed and also confused but i just tried to act normal because i didn't want my friend to think or smell that it was poo so i continued to blow my nose on it and then returned it back to my pocket girl you don't have to play it cool with this shit on your face i could not stop thinking about it for the rest of the conversation thinking if they could also tell that it was poo and that i had poo in my pocket i then had a good think about how the fuck I managed to put a shitty toilet paper back in my pocket and my theory is
Starting point is 00:16:19 is that I've been so sick that when I took a number two earlier that morning at uni I also blew my nose in the bathroom I thought I had put the toilet paper that I'd blown my nose on in my pocket but clearly I had put the wrong one in I think my exam stressed my brain out and I've also been super sick and I just used muscle memory when I was blowing my nose girls that is not muscle memory your muscle memory is not working she wiped her butt and she put it in her body it actually makes you feel i feel physically ill i feel ill could you imagine being like keep that for later no but i mean my favorite part of this story is not the fact she wiped on her face but she wanted to play it cool and not have any draw any more attention to it so she continued to wipe
Starting point is 00:16:59 it on her face like everything's fine the floor is not lava i have all been there living in denial this is like your everyone poos in the shower story we haven't all been there laura everyone's pooed in the shower everyone's put poo in their face come on guys we just let's all just the sooner we own up to these things the happier we're all gonna be failure is something that we all live through all right let's speak to Becky Becky Lucas is a comedian who has spent years writing on tv shows performing stand-up comedy she's literally hilarious she most recently sold out her solo show at the Sydney Opera House performed at Montreal's prestigious Just for Laughs festival
Starting point is 00:17:36 and made her US TV debut on Conan O'Brien. Now, I can't stress this enough. Conan O'Brien is huge, absolutely huge. So I really want to get into that in a minute. But first, I want to highlight the fact that she was the first Australian woman to do so. As a writer, Becky's credits include, but are not limited to, co-writing for Matt O'Kine's semi-auto biographical comedy
Starting point is 00:18:00 the other guy season one for stan as well as josh thomas's emmy nominated show please like me she co-hosts a podcast with cameron james and now she's gone out and decided to write a book called acknowledgements and it comes out tomorrow becky welcome to life uncut and is there anything that you can't do um yeah now you intro us that's how this works now can you prop us up in return sure sure two great girls both very clean I mean that's what you want clothes you guys are very groomed I'm really jealous that's not real that's not true she's lying I mean I'm balding so now I just have to pull my hair back into a ponytail I have really bad gray hairs and I looked in the mirror and I this morning before I came here and I thought will they take that as a sign of
Starting point is 00:18:43 disrespect but I haven't like done my hair like that you're aging how dare you age we only want young beautiful people on this podcast I remind you that we're all careening towards the grave But I mean, in this society, we're not supposed to age, are we? We're supposed to stay young forever. Well, I mean, as soon as we age, we're no longer valid as females. That's kind of how society works. But anyway, before we get into all your other accolades, I want you to embarrass yourself on here.
Starting point is 00:19:05 That's kind of what we do. So tell me, we do a part on this podcast called Accidentally Unfiltered and I want you to share your most embarrassing story. I reckon I'll pick something that is lingering. Some lingering embarrassment. A lingering embarrassment is, so this is like, I talk about this in my book, but like a couple of years ago, I was really depressed. i just broken up with someone or he'd broken up with me imagine it's such a lie when people are
Starting point is 00:19:27 like it's it's it's actually harder to break up with someone than it is to be broken up with it's like fuck off that's not true i have been on both ends i think they're both pretty cool one's awkward one's like oh my god i want to die because being broken up with it's like someone might as well say like i don't care about you basically like i'm cool with never seeing you again pretty much yeah but i still want to be friends and bang sometimes but i don't care about your feelings and your emotional sometimes you don't want to bang them or see them yeah well it's also anything until they die it's also worse when they break up with you and then they get with someone that's younger and hotter because you're like okay cool so i get that i'm aging and i'm not hot enough but
Starting point is 00:20:01 now my personality is also not good enough to keep you around i think maybe he broke up with you because you have gray hair becky i think so yeah that's a huge part of it i mean like i can imagine getting head with and just seeing gray hairs like i can see how that would be also guys paranoid can you look at the top of my head also I just want to like I'm sure there's somebody out there who's got gray hair who's like fuck these bitches I also have gray hair I dye it so like I want it to be all gray I think head with all gray head is hot so I was very depressed and I was like in that stage where you're just like I don't want to go out with anyone I just want to be like you just already want to skip all that shit like I want to be with someone where they
Starting point is 00:20:40 like know how hard to choke me and it's fine I don't have to fake my personality till I draw you in and then reveal who I am now I was in that phase and I was like eating something hot and like covered in sauce on the couch and then my roommate Jared came in and he was like oh I've been talking to my friend Jacques and now I knew Jacques as a guy they call used to call him pepper grinder because he had a pepper grinder dick well like a big one yeah wait or it's like got a big knobble at the end and like black stuff falls out of it no like pepper grinder like you know when someone comes over and they're like would you like pepper with that and then he slops them on the table like yeah anyway so he said so Jack is looking for someone he's sick of dating beautiful girls he
Starting point is 00:21:17 wants to date someone smart and I'm like thanks like first of all I'm not smart and now I know you don't think I'm beautiful cheers that is so cool I know and so I was like oh no I'm not really in the mood and he's like oh come on run I was like okay fine so I went out on like a double date with them and you know I was kind of into it like he's super the guy was super good looking and then I started to be like yeah like maybe I am also I put on an insane outfit for some reason put on an outfit and you're like well I've never worn this before and you look crazy you know you looked fierce yeah but you know I didn't I looked oh so you mean crazy not fierce you mean just like batshit yeah I looked really weird can you describe to me what you were wearing I'm just
Starting point is 00:21:55 imagining you walking out with like a feather boa and polka dot number worse than that it was white tights which should be banned from existence yeah like what what was I doing and then a strange striped dress so anyway so we're like getting along it's like the four of us and I'm actually doing okay I am drinking white wine at the time which is like all right I'm like think I'm killing it I'm probably just being obnoxious but we're all sort of getting along and like he's he's really lovely and then for some reason like my friend had to go do a gig he was also a comedian and we're like we'll all go we'll all go and I'm like yeah I'll just come and watch and I'll drink for free at the bar and then we arrive and I'm so drunk like blacking out drunk kind of and then the guy
Starting point is 00:22:32 who's running the gig says like do you want to get up and do some stand-up and I'm like yes I've got white pan confidence fuck yeah I'll get up look at this I'm wearing a fedora and white tights what could go wrong your brain is saying no in every single part of your existence is like yeah you can do that Becky get on up there I've got to show him who I am he needs to see me so I'm like for some reason say yes I kind of know it's a bad idea and I I'm filled with anger too I've got residual breakup anger I get up on stage I'm blasted from white wine couldn't be drunker and I'm on stage I have a microphone in my hand and I'm just yelling and like everyone's face is they're hating me and I just ramble and ramble and ramble until the guy running the show has
Starting point is 00:23:15 to come up and be like Becky you need to get off oh my god was there one laugh I'm dying for you right now I believe there was one laugh but like at you not with you kind of thing it was like I was like an elephant in a circus or something it was crazy and then I get off stage and I start being like oh my god that was awful and I start crying which is the worst like I'm in tears I'm crying I'm like I'm not usually like that I'm like actually funny and he's like just ask me like having to beg someone to think that you're funny is insane so I'm crying and then he's so nice he's like don't worry about it's all good and I was like oh I think I think I'm just gonna to go home I'm like I'm gonna go home okay I'm really sorry and I'm bawling I've got white tights
Starting point is 00:23:55 on and then I back up to go get my bag and there's like like a bin like an like you know like one that might be in a bar it's kind of like yeah like the low it's like something that yeah it's like something that a muppet would come out of yeah like yeah like Oscar yeah Oscar yeah it's very Sesame Street vibes it's New York it's everything so that's there and as I back up to get my bag I fall just into a bin we'll take the fucking trash out yeah like myself I just actually fold in half I'm like I'm now a girl in a bin were you like excuse me do you just mind wheeling me out to the street and leave me there but that's fine you don't need to come back to have a man and help you out of a bin did anything ever happen with pepper grinder jack did you end up hooking up
Starting point is 00:24:44 with him at all or do you maintain friendship um he very kindly likes my instagrams every now and then so you're casually dating then obviously he's like obsessed with me yeah and I reckon as soon as you go through a breakup or if anything ever happens in your relationship he's gonna be right there just waiting he's like pepper I'm like yes please all over all over the rigatoni a little bit more I guess I think that's a good segue to ask you how does one get into comedy because for me the thought of standing up on a stage alone trying to make people laugh at me makes me feel a little bit sick like I don't know is that something that when you're little you always thought you were funny people told you you were funny or were you just like I'm
Starting point is 00:25:22 gonna make myself be funny like I'm gonna learn these sets and be funny I was always told I was funny or like I just liked laughing you know like also like I had divorced parents or whatever and I always felt like I had to keep everything at an equilibrium and keep everyone feeling not anxious so I would always use that to be like everything's fine everything's fun it's like a coping mechanism totally it's totally a coping mechanism and then you just kind of fall into it and then you find other funny friends and it becomes a language and I think sometimes you meet someone who's super boring and you're like oh good for them they had a really easy life and they're really good looking so they don't have to have a personality yeah like their parents must have told them that they were
Starting point is 00:25:55 good and they probably are good yeah exactly good for them but please like I need to talk to someone that's a bit messed up like I enjoy someone who's a bit wrong I live for your trauma because it just really defines you as a person I think you should always have a little bit of trauma like as a parent don't be too worried about giving your kids the best life because you want them to have something to say no I say this about Marley and Lola all the time I'm like look a little bit of dysfunction is good it means they're going to be well-rounded great people that's why you've left your kids in the car today right in the bin I think that's absolutely true I think the things that you go through and like this is for two seconds to be serious definitely the times that
Starting point is 00:26:31 Laura and I have been in absolute hysterics with each other on the podcast in private it's when we're reminiscing on the most fucked up traumatic thing that has happened in our life because at the time you don't see why something's funny you don't see how this is going to benefit you in any way but it becomes funny a few years later when you look back and you're in a safer place and you're like can you actually believe that happened and I do think there's so much emphasis at the moment and like analyzing your trauma and bringing your trauma back up and discussing it and stuff and it's like well the brain kind of does cut trauma off like really like there is a coping mechanism where it kind of you stop thinking about it and you should let a lot of it go it's fun to be able
Starting point is 00:27:09 to laugh about it and that is to me far more healing than like bringing it all to the surface and like going through it all because it just I don't know it just gets exhausting absolutely and we actually interviewed Mark Manson not so long ago on one of our episodes he's the author of the subtle art of not giving a fuck and he said something which was really just like so perfectly put and it was like human suffering like nobody is going to escape that that is part of the human condition it's part of what we live but we're so wanting to like either avoid it or unpack it to a point where we can't actually physically get over it or it creates the trauma then creates more trauma yeah and it becomes your identity and I think everyone's always searching for this identity
Starting point is 00:27:46 like this is me this is who I am like I went through trauma and it's like you're so much more than that it does not have to define you yeah we preach this all the time and i think i'm really big on like long story short i spent a month with a monk and he just like changed my whole life but the biggest thing you take away from that is he's like something bad is going to happen to you 100 he's like you will not escape that something bad is going to happen to every human but it's what you do with that and it's how you move forward with that and look back on it in 10 years are you still going to be and i don't want to say this as a blanket statement but are you still going to be the victim of this are you going to let that rule you or can you accept that it affected
Starting point is 00:28:19 you but be like cool it happened because of this I'm better because of this I'm here now and I think that that is just such a brilliant way to look at it it is and it's very hard because I think culture at the moment is making people want to be victims a little bit like and I think it really does like glorify that experience and it's very easy and like I'm like the first person to be like I love sympathy let's admit like it does feel good but everyone's like poor you but I do think like you have to fight it a little bit and there is like a toughness that comes when you like can make fun of something or you can look at something and we're all just like these flawed people interacting and connecting and I don't know I think when you you take your trauma too
Starting point is 00:28:55 seriously you assume that everything was really personal as opposed to like we're all just these crazy people and like not everything was done with intention and that's what like when I was writing the book like so many things that I thought you know I just believe this certain narrative that this person did this to me and blah blah blah blah and it's like oh no they were just on their own journey and this is what happened and there was no intention behind it like they didn't mean to hurt you it wasn't a big deal you kind of just touched on something which is taking me on a massive segue here but I figure while we're there I'm going to ask the question how we roll I think being a comedian now must be a lot harder in that there does seem to be topics of conversation that
Starting point is 00:29:30 are kind of off limits like we are being more politically correct around what we can and can't say and where humor can and can't take us yeah how do you feel about that I don't like it I don't know I just think it's a very bubble way of thinking too I just think it's very unfair that comedians shoulder this responsibility of what you can and can't say it seems sometimes like there's more anger at an individual comedian for saying something than there is at a politician or corporations or you know people who hold real power and who have real power to affect people's lives you know there's people living in incredible poverty there is extreme wealth inequality and these lead to awful situations for people comedians might be voicing a bad thing but that doesn't mean
Starting point is 00:30:12 that they're advocating for it or saying that it should be you know and it's like but they're the ones that shoulder for some reason like we're expected to have these perfect opinions all the time and comedy for a lot of people in comedy like there's always this like oh it's all full of straight white guys that's not true and it is full of really different people from different backgrounds that I don't think that they should be piled on for maybe saying something a little off colour especially when you know there's some guy like some billionaire guy who doesn't give a fuck about workers and their rights and their family lives and stuff you know there's so much anger that should be directed in towards the right channels I think that some guy earning
Starting point is 00:30:48 $50 a night for doing a show in a pub who maybe says the wrong thing accidentally or on purpose should be yeah held accountable totally yeah and I think also in that like the whole premise of being a comedian is that a comedian is that a lot of it is said satirically like you know you push boundary is you sit outside people's comfort zone and that's what gives people a giggle like that's kind of where that comes from people vote with their feet like if they don't like what you're saying they won't go and also they'll you know if someone makes a bad racial joke guess what there's a really funny person of color who you can go support as well like the pain and hurt that happens when everyone jumps on someone and starts like cancelling them how is that a moral
Starting point is 00:31:23 world how is that like bringing more love and understanding speaking about you know the fact that comedy is not all just straight white males in their 40s and 50s what's it like being a female comedian because I feel like you are a minority now I could be that could be very ignorant of me to say that but I do feel like women comedians are the minority in that world and I think that there's a lot of dudes out there who just have the general opinion of like chicks aren't funny I know hello listen to life on cut we're fucking funny dated guys who have said oh yeah but you know chicks aren't funny I'm like fuck you but you know what I think so you're a joke yeah totally think so many people form opinions and then can't even be bothered to go back and revise them
Starting point is 00:32:02 so I reckon like when they were 12 years old they heard someone say women aren't funny and they were like okay that's locked and loaded that's what I say when that topic comes up but you went on Conan O'Brien I want to know about Conan you were the first Australian woman to go on Conan O'Brien which is such a huge show in the states I watched the set I thought it was really funny I want to know hey how did that happen did he just like slide on into your dms did you have to slide on into his dms like what was the sliding happening believe it or not not everything happens in dms i literally live in my dm you need heart surgery you slide into the surgeon i opened for him when he was here and i guess that's just from being in the scene like you just got picked to do that
Starting point is 00:32:40 and then it went well we had a great little riff backstage he said i needed medication well i mean you've made it and you were like there that's a really great assessment of me you're really astute exactly so I didn't go on the meds I chose to kind of just ride the ups and downs but yeah and then he just I think his booker just contacted my agent and there was a slot on the show and I happened to be going over there for Montreal because I booked the flight the next day once he asked me so I didn't I slid into virgins dms I said I want a ticket to LA yeah and then it just happened it was awesome it was such a dream like I was newly in love my boyfriend came with me and had a limo pick us up and like went through the big white gates of the studio and
Starting point is 00:33:22 yeah it was great goosebumps I know what do you do on the flip side what do you do when you have a set where you feel like you sucked like and then you fall in a bin like what's what's the ramifications of that because surely that would take a hit to your ego or your self-confidence it doesn't happen as much when you know like you have a set maybe that doesn't go as great or whatever but you don't have those like earth shattering that's sort of for your first couple years you have these like awful bombs but you know it's very empowering because it's not like someone takes you out the back and shoots you in the head like there's i imagine it feels similar though yeah it's like there's literally no consequences you're embarrassed and it kind of
Starting point is 00:34:00 sucks but you do rebuild i would think that before our generation being a comedian or in any sense life is easier because you could go up on stage you could do your set it could fucking suck no one knows about it. I feel like now we live in such a digital age that people are filming stuff and all of a sudden it is so easy for that to be on the internet forever. That is what I think I would worry about. I'd be like, everyone just saw me falling in the bin. Everyone just saw me. That's why I'm like, please only do boomerangs. Please don't actually voice record. Boomerang only. That kind of brings us into what the topic of the book that you've written is about. This idea that we go through these just shitty experiences in life, you know, shitty breakups,
Starting point is 00:34:38 shitty jobs, whatever it is. I think everybody has something that they've experienced in their life where it didn't work out the way they wanted or expected or had hoped yeah and then actually further down the track with the beauty of hindsight we're able to be grateful that that didn't happen or that we kind of went through that awful period of our life now there's this one bit in the book which I want to read out to you guys and it was David after having my self-esteem crushed and beaten down all week by your unwavering indifference the idea of getting on stage and trying comedy suddenly didn't seem so scary eight years after this disastrous visit I would return to America to do a set on Conan O'Brien's show and that's got to be partly thanks to you. Now tell me about this
Starting point is 00:35:16 David disaster. So David it's so embarrassing to admit but so many things I've ever done or like been interested in were to spite a man. No I love that. Yeah like so many of my hobbies I'm like this is for a boy. Yeah but what is that saying where it's like the most perfect revenge is being happy or being successful you know. That's not the whole point of the book is like your personality is like it doesn't belong to you it actually sort of belongs to so many people that come in and out of your life do you know what I love that I'm gonna say something quickly as soon as you just said that like I remember this guy that I was in love with in my mid-20s and it was on and off for years and I was just not good enough for him like I was good enough for him to be around but not to
Starting point is 00:35:55 date properly or not to take home to the parents and I remember it was New York that we had our big breakup as well something about New York oh my god that's so dramatic it's so dramatic no it is I was driving away in the taxi he was crying on the street and he was like wait and I'm like it's okay he's like you don't want this and that's fine but I remember in myself being like you Brittany are gonna go and be so fucking successful purely so this guy in 10 years can be like who cares who gives it to you who cares who gives you the impetus to do stuff like it might sound pathetic but it's like whatever like so many things come from like I'll show you by the way you are so Carrie in the scene where she's like I'm looking for love I was like if I'm not
Starting point is 00:36:37 enough for you that's okay but I'm gonna go find who does want me and I was like what did she say she's like bone crushing can't live without it love I love that you guys like attribute your success to like all your relationships and I just like attribute my neuroticism to it I'm like thanks to all my exes for making me fucking crazy but I mean it's not just men you know there's women as well that have come in I'm like oh like oh you know it's all different people like parents or family members it's like you have these little people that spark something in you and you maybe start something because you're trying to spite them or whatever but then you end up liking it or like takes on a life of its own yeah like I'm not still doing the podcast now because of this
Starting point is 00:37:13 guy but there's that moment of setting the fire in so yeah tell us about tell us about David so David was this guy that I met backpacking and didn't even like him like he wore a fedora yeah red flag yeah it was bad it was like a leather fedora he has way too much confidence you know he's gonna be a fuck boy in a fedora leather fedora is like i always say it's the international sign for letting people know you leave comments underneath pornos so i loved this one this guy's gonna break my heart this is it sign me up so i like i didn't even like him at first but then he got to me and then i went back to australia and he went back to San Fran I guess I kind of harassed him into letting him let me visit him so I like went to
Starting point is 00:37:54 visit you broke you wore him down I wore him down I was like do you miss me but like I arrived and I wasn't able to take my suitcase on the connecting flight so I turned up with like a sack I was the saddest girl I was like pizza rat like just dragging this sack and he didn't think it was funny and basically like I was staying with him for seven days and he you know when you just immediately turn up somewhere and you're like oh they don't want me here it's the worst you're like I have made a grave error yeah and I've like told everyone I'm like oh my god I'm gonna go visit him like I've created this whole narrative that just was fake I was deluded he's probably gonna propose while I'm there I know oh god it's so embarrassing but it was awful like I really did
Starting point is 00:38:31 like him and I was very excited and I was suddenly in this like I guess stranger's home who didn't want me there so I just had to like go out all day like I just had to leave and like pace around and come home and be like it was really had a great day there was this one night and he he was like staying later and later at work to like avoid me I guess and then there was this one night I'm like I'm gonna stay out later than him so like he'll notice when I come home and so I went to this club and had like a fine time I think I got rejected by yet another guy he can smell rejection on me he's like I am also not interested you just do the text I won't be home till late yeah and the guy who takes my phone is like yes she will nothing's happening here so then I was like
Starting point is 00:39:10 fuck I gotta go somewhere so I looked at like things to do in San Fran and I found the Purple Onion which is a very popular comedy club and I went and had a beer and sat there and I was like oh and like I had a friend who was doing comedy and I was always like yeah like I was I was really feeling like I was funny at the time like when we were traveling and stuff so that was the initial spark of like maybe I could do this and then I got home and told people I was gonna do it and I told a friend who was already doing comedy and he booked me in to do it that was the catalyst that set the career in motion and the wheels in motion totally like and again yeah it was that thing where I'm like oh like I'm not gonna let this trip be a waste and a complete fail totally
Starting point is 00:39:48 and I wanted him to see me doing something that was like cool and like I thought it was cool comedy's not cool but like at the time I was like this would be such a cool thing for him to see me do I've done so many embarrassing things I like took up fire twirling because I there was a girl on my season of The Bachelorette who did fire twirling and I actually thought she was gonna like end up with Matt and I was like Matt's gonna be with a fire twirler yeah he's gonna wear Hessian pants and live in Byron Bay and like decide to she's actually a legend but it was a lot when I was sitting there I was you know why I was sitting there having like my very first conversation with him like it was the first cocktail night we were sitting there together like
Starting point is 00:40:26 having a DNM yeah and then she was like this surprise entry and just kind of like walks in wearing the sexiest outfit fucking fire twirling and I was like I've just lost my man to what is this world yeah where am I right now it's not good to lose your boyfriend to a hippie is um yeah it was low point but anyway we got there in the end but I mean I think one of the things that I really loved about the book and the sentiment behind it which aligns so strongly to what we have been preaching since literally day one on this podcast I mean when we started this podcast it was basically a relationships and love podcast and we've kind of like evolved in our journey over the last couple of years we're branching out to trauma but even even in the very first episode we
Starting point is 00:41:02 said that there was like a big slant and a big focus on breakups because like even though they can be one of the most traumatic things that you go through and that's when you honestly feel like your whole world is ending like how can this person that I love and this identity and life that I saw for myself not happen like all these things that I had envisaged are not real anymore and then you kind of put into a new trajectory yeah but from that experience you can do your absolute best growth and some of the most wonderful things in life can happen and yeah I think that almost everybody who comes out of those breakups in two years time looks back at it and goes thank fuck for that like I genuinely don't know anybody who's gone through a bad breakup who in
Starting point is 00:41:40 years time isn't grateful that they're not with that person anymore yeah even if they're still friends they look back on that and go yeah look he was a great guy it was a great relationship for the time that it was what it was but it served a time and served a purpose yeah well you're just not pushing yourself as much anymore unless you're in the right relationship where you still do that but totally ideally like you do find new parts of yourself when someone has rejected you because you're like well they wouldn't reject me now and it puts you into this part of your life where you're like so far outside your comfort zone I think when you're outside your comfort zone that's where your most profound growth happens as well and so like it's very hard when you're in it and
Starting point is 00:42:14 this is not me being like toxic positivity but it's very hard when you're in it to see what you're going to get on the other side of it yeah but I think that maybe once you've been through a really difficult period in your life and you have come out and actually are okay and in some ways better for it you can kind of reflect when the next bad thing happens and go okay this is pretty fucked but you know what it might be a good chapter for my next book I 100% look at my experience and like this is my timeline in my head of where I got to and why I'm thankful dated a sociopath for two years I found out you know I was like traumatized because of that I went on this round the world trip for three years because I had a breakdown I was like bye only because of my round the world
Starting point is 00:42:51 trip did the bachelor end my traumatic two-year relationship did the bachelor decide to pick me because that was my cell though like this girl's messed up yeah she also likes to travel and he's moving she keeps moving this bachelor likes to travel so they put me on the batch then I got dumped publicly which was like also traumatizing which led me to meet Laura which led to the best relationship she's ever had the best relationship from the bachelor which led to the podcast which led to my blue tick the blue tick was the only reason I'm famous yeah that's where that story wow super relatable it's so unrelatable and I'm the first person to say that but like this is just my story the blue tick got me onto Raya which is like the dating app Raya is the only reason I met
Starting point is 00:43:31 my current partner after 10 years of being single and all that traumatizing whatnot so now I'm in this lovely beautiful relationship and it's only I 100% attribute every single thing that I have just said to where I got I think if one of those things didn't happen my whole trajectory like I I'd probably be the hippie in South America right now. I wouldn't have come back. I would have just been like, I mean, because Britt kept on showing up to tennis matches and it didn't work out that way.
Starting point is 00:43:56 So she was like, I know another way. I'll slide into his DMs because we know a slide in works. I mean, when in doubt, slide out. That's my life motto. Becky, if you could go back and tell your younger self one thing and give yourself a piece of advice, what would that be? I don't want to say don't take things seriously because I think that's such a fun part of life.
Starting point is 00:44:16 you know like the intensity of emotion when you're young is it's fun and like I try not to tell my little sisters like oh don't worry about like if they don't text you back and blah blah because the thrill of that that is a part of being in love is like the waiting for the text message they're like agonizing over it all like that means something that's usually actually more fun than the actual relationship well I think that sort of intensity is necessary as well and I think that you have those relationships where like they are all encompassing and they're kind of a bit like make you feel a bit crazy because it also then makes you really appreciate when you have something that's normal and consistent and stable like I think for myself and my personal experience it's
Starting point is 00:44:50 like had I not had the fully insane relationships that made me wildly out of control I wouldn't so value what I have now and how stable and comfortable it is I probably would have said it was boring you want the drama and you're 20 I mean you don't even know you're attracted to it you don't know you want it I think you actually think you don't and you end up feeling sorry for yourself being like why can't i just find someone nice why can't i find someone that treats me well but like deep down they're like oh i'll treat you well and you're like fuck off you're boring not you but what is we haven't even touched on this and i don't know how what is your dating life now are you single taken complicated running away to a nunnery like where are you at no i have
Starting point is 00:45:28 a long-term relationship with a beautiful boy hey boring next no i'm joking he actually still gives me the stomach flip which is annoying but cute well you know he like plays with my emotions but I enjoy it it's a big cat and mouse but it is cat and mouse but I'm I'm the cat I'm the desperate one but I like that I need someone who like keeps me on my toes a bit does your partner think you're funny yeah okay that's good because mine doesn't oh that's a real problem he doesn't think I'm funny and I do and it's like as long as you do yeah he's just like he doesn't think I'm not funny but we definitely laugh at different things but like I'll do a skip video or something with Laura or myself or whoever and he it just doesn't land with him he like won't even watch it he's
Starting point is 00:46:07 like yeah I don't get why that's funny but I just think he's like I support you and everything I just don't think you're that funny and it's like such a blow to my ego you don't think like something he thinks he's good at that you don't think he's good at yeah heaps of stuff eating pussy like he doesn't listen to this because he would die but no you're really lucky that he thinks you're funny and yeah we have a good time like we have like a big group of friends and like we're all we all make each other laugh a lot I love that I think like you don't have to have someone who your friends obviously think you're funny like you think you're funny your partner can't be everything like if he's does the other stuff like you can't satisfy everything I completely agree
Starting point is 00:46:45 with this and I think that there is such an unrealistic expectation that we put on our partners and in relationships never do that to a friend no and we expect them to be our best friend we expect them to be like our confidant we expect them to be the person that makes us laugh we expect them to be the person that makes us feel better dads and lovers and business partners all like to have like almost like a maternal or paternal part in our life as well and it's like it's so unreasonable and I think like I've kind of like done a bit of research in this since having children it's like you also expect because we've moved further away from religion now a lot of people don't really have anything we're like there's a lot more atheists rocking around the
Starting point is 00:47:19 world we also expect spiritual connection through our partners as well and it's like that is such a fucking unfair expectation that that person is going to give you everything yes you need to be my god I mean some of them think they are but like you need to be able to get that satisfaction and fulfillment from other areas in your life and exactly with that Brit like if you have other people in your life we have great sex I think you're funny but I'm not fucking you so like you get different things from different people but also having said that he and I we will like roll around in hysterics together laughing but yeah I don't find his humor funny I want someone to prop me up sure but like I don't need it and it doesn't affect us but I would like him to fake laugh at me
Starting point is 00:47:57 sometimes so if he's listening like just fake laughter Becky we're gonna start to wrap this up because we could literally talk to you for hours and I mean like I feel like just so everyone knows we already laughed this off for an hour before we even started recording but I guess I want to know we haven't even touched on what made you write the book what was the drive behind it what was this passion for it and what do you think people are going to get from it I have always wanted to write a book like I've always wanted to be a writer that's actually why I started comedy as well I always wanted to write funny stuff that's always where I feel where I'm my funniest where I can actually just have time to be funny and like work it out and stuff and I guess I just wanted
Starting point is 00:48:33 to write a book that was super honest and like fun and like I want it to be something that you can just laugh at I do feel like and I don't want to sound awful but I do feel like so many comedians put out books and they're actually not that funny like they go into all their stories and like I went to school like I just didn't want a kind of self-indulgent like it's obviously it's self-indulgent because it's about me but I just wanted girls to be able to read it especially younger girls because I loved reading so I didn't have sisters I didn't grow up with women and I don't know I just found like reading a female comedian's book or like something written by a funny woman was always so it was so fun it was like this way of like oh you can be like this or
Starting point is 00:49:12 you can think like this or this can be your funny little take on stuff and I just remember like collecting all those ideas so much there is something special about like I just imagine like a 15 year old being like oh my god like I can read this I definitely found it very relatable like even the chapters that you were talking about from when you're in primary school up until like your traveling horrific dating stories there were literally something in every chapter where I was like I've been there I've felt that and I was feeling your embarrassment in some of the chapters and I think that that's what's the most important thing something when you write something that can connect with people and take them back to a place where they're like fuck she's still kicking and
Starting point is 00:49:47 she's doing all right maybe my life's not so bad either and I'll be okay too well that's like one of the big reasons why we have accidentally unfiltered on this podcast it's because like people relate to like your most embarrassing stories because we've all done it we've all had something where we thought oh my god I'm gonna die of embarrassment and you just don't die of embarrassment no like life just goes on and you keep on kicking and trust me you'll do something else that'd be twice as horrible probably in about six months time and maybe that does stay on the internet but that's okay totally and like no one's gonna remember you like they forget the best of us so like Becky thank you so much for coming on and sharing
Starting point is 00:50:19 just your story with us and also having this conversation around like making the best of your failures oh thanks for having me guys you're so fun and also for everyone who's listening you can buy Becky's book as of tomorrow yes it comes out tomorrow please buy it and that is Becky's cell that she has rehearsed for hours it is called Acknowledgements and it is out tomorrow can you please tell everyone where they can purchase your book um I oh gosh like good bookstores yeah like bookstores booktopia amazon it's all you just you can just type it in and it'll come up and where can people find you on the gram it is at becky lucas underscore underscore okay i didn't get just becky lucas okay becky lucas underscore underscore
Starting point is 00:50:57 i did actually write to you on the way here on one of your photos and ask what coffee you want you didn't answer me so if you go back and answer me anyway we took a stab in the dark yep beautiful it's meant to be thanks so much for coming on the pod becky thanks so much guys All right, guys, you know that we never finish an episode without our suck and our sweet, our highlight and our low light of each and every week. And you know what? I really recommend that you start doing this with your family and your friends and your dog and your cat if you live alone or your housemates. It's just such a nice way to round out the week by sitting down and unpacking what's your favorite bit and what bit do you want to put in the bin? Yeah, this is
Starting point is 00:51:35 literally what my family have done growing up. This is sort of how we got into it and how it started I think it's just a really nice way to connect do you want me to start yes but you know what we used to do this in the batch house as well so every every night after we um had like a fucked up rose ceremony or something we would sit down all the survivors everyone that was there to share another day we would sit down and do our we called them lemons and oranges so it was like the sweet was the orange and the suck was the lemon I see what you did there thanks for explaining though yeah it's been a long week guys all right Brittany hit me give me your suck oh my suck would probably be if you guys followed my stories yesterday actually that'd still be up now while
Starting point is 00:52:14 you're listening to this um I've just been getting a lot of messages I don't want to say a lot but I've gotten a fair few over the last few months and I just like had enough that I turned it into a reel so many people think it's okay to write to me and tell me that Jordan's definitely gonna cheat on me I get it all the time what yeah they're like like oh I had to read you some of them they're like girl you don't actually think he's gonna be faithful to you like he's an athlete on the other side of the world he's definitely cheating on you he's definitely not gonna stay faithful for a year blah blah blah blah all the time and it got to and it doesn't bother me when I read them because I'm very confident in the relationship when I read them at the start I was
Starting point is 00:52:51 like lol I don't even respond but I'm like funny funny and then they kept coming and I'm like oh my god how many people out there like what why do people feel like they could write to someone they don't know in a relationship to tell them and it's not like they're telling me that he's done it it's not like they're saying that like hey just a heads up he's done this I mean it's jealousy it's it's not necessarily jealousy but it's it's projection you know like people have been security people have been hurt we have insecurities about being cheated on you know and I think that when you've been cheated on it becomes unfathomable that there might be somebody out there who goes against the grain like obviously a lot of sports guys have got bad reps and then it just becomes like okay
Starting point is 00:53:30 well that has to be the status quo that's what every single person does and it comes from people's own feelings of invalidation it comes from people's own insecurities it comes from like you know just there's fear in that and that says so much about the person sending that message totally and I just thought you know what I could get upset and mad about this or I could turn into a funny reel so that's what I did so anyway that's my suck for the week my sweet is you're like but the real got really good engagements so actually I'm fine with that that's my sweet I just thought it was funny because he's such a little nerd I love him my sweet this week's Jordan as well guys I've got a really Jordan fueled week this week he played the fringe open last night and I'm just super
Starting point is 00:54:08 proud of him I just I'm like my heart could burst with how proud of him I mean like he doesn't even have to do anything and I'm proud of him but like that's definitely my sweet and also I feel like that's how I get I I feel connected to him when I watch him play tennis and I know that feels stupid and I say to him all the time like I talk to him through the tv it's so stupid I'm like babe concentrate I'm like you can do this and and sometimes I see his eyes catch the camera and I'm like he was looking at me but I mean he wasn't but that's cute so that's my suck and my sweet it's all Geordie this week that is very adorable I love this um I promise I won't he won't be my sucks and sweet any other weeks but also we are careening towards you going away for two and a
Starting point is 00:54:46 half months oh my god I cannot wait guys it's only a couple of weeks away so so my suck and sweet do you know what this week's been a bit of a weird one everything's kind of just been smushed together so I've got like a few sucks and a few sweets Matt has been in Hamilton Island for like the past six nights so I've been solo parenting with the girls and it's surprisingly it was actually great like I was really really set up for everything to go wrong the poo burrito it's been a lot of poo in my week I really had the expectation that it was going to be a really hard and like unmanageable week and it wasn't that so like that was a really good thing Marley did a poo in the bath that was like partly a suck it was like a full human size not human size because she's human size it was a
Starting point is 00:55:27 full adult sized poo in the bath but then what happened was is so I was in the middle of breastfeeding Lola she'd been screaming I just got in Lola calm we were like a quarter of the way through a feed and then I could hear Molly go poo poo poo poo and then she started screaming and I mean like like it sounded like someone was trying to attack her she was screaming and I ran into the bathroom so then Lola's screaming because I'm halfway through a feed and she's like like the poo poo was attacking her and then she got shat in the bath she did poo in the bath and then she had post-poo trauma and was too afraid to have a bath for the rest of the week
Starting point is 00:56:05 so I've been having to have showers with her. She wouldn't get back in the bath. She's now afraid of the poo in the bath. What does she think the poo's going to... And the poo's not in... I'm also afraid of the poo in the bath, guys. Hey, the poo came out of her own butt. So it wasn't there and then it was
Starting point is 00:56:18 and she knew what she did. B, it's not going to do anything. C, it's gone. I like that you're trying to reason with me about my toddler and the one thing that I have learned about toddlers is that they are unreasonable. I'm just trying to speak out loud. I'm thinking out loud.
Starting point is 00:56:30 So, yeah, so that was probably my suck was the poo in the bath, which I think, like, with everything considered, that was a very, very fine suck. That's fair. That's a fair suck. I mean, I missed Matt. I hated that he was away for so long. He kept on sending me photos and videos and stuff from Hamilton Island
Starting point is 00:56:44 whilst I was here. My sweet ears, also poo-related, though. Wow, we've got so much poo in this episode. Marley has done three poos on the potty today, and she is a genius. The end. I feel like this is a how do you know you're a parent when you talk about how proud you are.
Starting point is 00:57:04 And I took photos of them and sent them to Matt. So Matt was sending me photos of Whitehaven Beach and stuff and I was sending him photos of poo in a body. So I literally got a message from Laura. She sent me a picture of the poo in the bath, which I love that that's where our friendship is. Matt, about 10 minutes later, so Laura has sent me this picture of the poo. She's like, kill me, like RIP me.
Starting point is 00:57:25 Then about 10 minutes later I get a message from Matt and it's like him diving into this crystal clear water on a white beach and I was like hey buddy like just as a friend I'm gonna give you a heads up don't send this to Laura I was like do not let Laura see this picture right now abort mission and he sent a couple of minutes back I get another photo of a I think he's just googled it it's a stock standard picture a beach with covered in rain he goes if she asks show her this we were like trying to protect her from like how good of time he was having but yeah well he came home tonight and I literally like the minute he walked in the door I just handed him the two children I was like I'm going
Starting point is 00:58:00 to record now I love you goodbye I'll be back next week we have to finish because I haven't seen Matt for six days and I'm going home to see him have sex no that's not what we're gonna do we're gonna sit on the couch and probably watch some hair maze tale guys we hope you loved the episode today please keep your accidentally unfiltered rolling into the dms on life uncut podcast also keep your questions for ask uncut coming in just make sure you put accidentally unfiltered and ask uncut at the top of the heading so we can sort that out also if you're not a member of the facebook discussion group you are missing out because there is so much goodness that goes on that page and please if you have not yet left us a review we would really really
