Life Uncut - Modesty or Misogyny: The Debate Over Olivia Culpo’s Wedding Dress

Episode Date: July 8, 2024

Hey Lifers! We are BACK from a little holiday and feeling refreshed, but truthfully still as unhinged as ever! Britt made a big hotel mistake and Laura admitted that Matt was right to be annoyed about... something she did when she went away.At the time of recording, media outlets across the world have reported that Margot Robbie is pregnant, despite not having it confirmed by Margot or her husband. It feels like we're not living in 2024. Just over a week ago Miss Universe from 2012 Olivia Culpo married NFL player Christian McCaffrey. Her wedding attire and subsequent interview with Vogue has cause quite the stir with the question of whether her dress was meant to impress or suppress. We unpack the internet's response to her interview and weigh in on whether we think it's a conservative campaign with a side of Madonna whore, or if she should be able to choose whatever wedding dress she wants for any reasons she likes! Starting point is 00:00:00 Life Uncut acknowledges the traditional custodians of country whose lands were never ceded. We pay our respects to their elders past and present. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land. This episode was recorded on Cammeraygal land. Hi guys and welcome back to another episode of Life Uncut. I'm Laura. I'm Brittany and we are back from our baby break. Whoa, that made it sound like I had a baby. I meant like a mini break. I'm certainly not back from my baby break.
Starting point is 00:00:34 Oh, I did have a break away from my babies. And I had a break and practiced making babies. So it sort of was like a baby break. I officially did not practice any baby making, not once during the holidays. Not even once. But you vacayed without Matty J. I went away. So I hope you didn't practice making babies.
Starting point is 00:00:53 Knowing he wasn't on holiday with you. I also, I went away, as you guys know, went to India, went to Bali with my sister, came back and now Matt's sick. So yeah, it hasn't happened. There's nothing happening with us. You can't have sick sex. I mean, you can have sick sex, but not sick sex. Okay.
Starting point is 00:01:12 There is so much for us to catch up on. As you guys know, it's been two weeks. Since then, Hawk Tour has gone viral. That's a thing. Oh my God. Gotta give them the Hawk Tour. Can I say for a second, I thought you meant... like Hockley on tour like Hock was on tour has gone viral and I was like what
Starting point is 00:01:29 no I mean I got it Hock tour went viral Margot Robbie is apparently pregnant we have a lot of feelings about this which we will talk about how ridiculous and also Brit you are back from being engaged but now you're here and Ben's not here and I don't know thanks for rubbing that in not rubbing it in just want to because we haven't really spoken since getting back we want to save it all for you guys for the podcast so I mean firstly I want to know how you're feeling but also how was it going on your engagement moon as you coined it yeah I coined it engagement moon it was actually such a whirlwind it was so we only had two weeks off I had 11 flights and five time zones in in two weeks you look good I am cooked I haven't slept all night so we got back
Starting point is 00:02:13 yesterday so jet lagged like I am pinging right now like I am absolutely wired and I am depressed no I'm not really I'm really sad yeah I am wearing Ben's jumper and Ben's underwear yeah I do have Ben's jumper on because he did leave some clothes here which is nice it means that he's coming back one day it's like a nice reassurance that he'll be back it was really hard it was way it's always hard when you leave each other but it was way harder this time now that I know like he belongs to me and I own him forever yeah yeah so like you know once we've made that commitment and you were Like you promised yourself to me, but now you're on the other side of the world. This doesn't make any sense.
Starting point is 00:02:53 It's actually funny. I don't know if you felt this, Laura, or anyone listening right now, but I love him infinitely. Like before we got engaged, he was, I always knew he was going to be the one, like, I just loved him so much. And then when we got engaged, I loved him even more. And I don't know if that's a thing. And I don't know if this is what happens with, you hear parents say it a lot, like you don't think you can love something more than you have a child and you're like, oh, there's
Starting point is 00:03:18 even more love and I didn't know it I feel like I got extra love do you think that that comes from the validation that you get when someone else is also saying like I'm all in you know I mean I know that you guys have talked about it for so long but actually having someone propose to you and that action of showing that he is like 100% without a doubt it's not just talk he's all in that it allows you to like let your guard down a little bit more 100% I know we've already spoken about that we're going to be each other's people yeah cute fun whatever whatever but then once you have that moment and you're like oh my god we really are saying to each other that you are my human for the rest of our life like that is what we're saying and it just changed it I don't know
Starting point is 00:03:58 what it was it's it's not that I relax more or anything like that but I just look at him differently and I don't know how to explain it and I reckon there are so many people out there that know exactly what I'm talking about maybe it hasn't happened for everyone well I think it comes I mean for me I think it's because I have had that conversation with a number of my exes in the past like I have I'm so not shocked no but like I mean I was in a six-year relationship and I was convinced that he was the one I was gonna marry and then I was in a much shorter relationship with a guy who cheated on me then there's that guy I never met and I was convinced that he was the one too but often you I mean I shouldn't say often it might happen once or twice
Starting point is 00:04:39 in your life where you have a big conversation around like I think you're my forever person and like we're going to get and you start planning the future and then it doesn't turn out that way so it is different when you actually have someone who gets down on their knee and proposes I don't know I don't think that marriage necessarily changes anything about the relationship but it definitely makes you feel more secure like that person has made a commitment that you're going to try and work through it no matter what yeah and I'm just so emotional all the time about it like it's weird why I don't know I just look at I could like I don't know what's happening to me I could I don't know if it's I'm perimenopause I don't know if I look at him all the time it's
Starting point is 00:05:17 disgusting I disgust myself I look at him and I'm like oh I just can't believe you're mine at least you said it and then I vomit in my own mouth and then I have to swallow it and then we go to the buffet breakfast it's a vicious cycle Laura okay well I mean like we wanted to quickly update you guys on like what's been happening the last couple of weeks I'm Brit you went and had a gorgeous holiday. I feel like you just spent the entire time at the beach, which I'm jealous about because it looked incredible. Yeah. I mean, I spent a lot of time in the water between the Maldives and Malta. That is correct. But I had an overly uneventful holiday, which I'm very happy about because something stupid always happens. But I did have this one moment that at the time I have
Starting point is 00:05:56 never been more embarrassed and mortified and shocked. And now I just think it's absolutely hilarious. And I was like, how did I think I could get through one entire holiday completely unscathed? so we're in Malta and because Ben's going back to pre-season he's out training a lot like he has to go to the gym he's got all these training stuff that he has to do from his team and whatever so he's spending a lot of time exercising Malta was like 35 degrees it was sweltering hot so I spent a lot of time just nude in my room to be honest because like you'd go out in the mornings and the afternoons but the middle of the day like you were cooked and I'd been in four different time zones and why would you bother putting clothes back on when you know you're gonna have
Starting point is 00:06:32 sex in another 15 minutes. No, it's just so hot. You get in from the beach. I would have a cold shower. I'd lay on my bed naked. I'd watch a movie, whatever. Anyway, I'm not one of those people. I don't know if you are. I'm not one of those people that puts the signs on the door, like do not disturb, please clean, whatever. I'm never that person. But because they knock. So you're like, I'm home. You're not going to come in while I'm here. Well, I had seen, yes. So I had seen them up the corridor. So I was like, oh, better put the sign on. And it was, you know, double-sided sign so I put the sign on please do not disturb we all know I'm half deaf I get on the bed completely naked running man like one leg over running man don't you mean you're watching
Starting point is 00:07:10 running man I was like I haven't seen that no because that's how I lay down right like you know like the one leg thrown like this one leg thrown over the top running man starkers a little bit split split yeah not from Ben just split so I'm watching this movie and then out of nowhere there's a woman standing behind me I'm stark naked and she's in my room and I look up at her and I'm like ah she's like ah and she turns around and she turns around doesn't leave the room and I'm like I'm so sorry and she's like I'm so sorry but you put the sign on the door and I said yes I put the sign on the door and I was like why are you in here and she's like but you you want the sign and I was like yes the sign and she's like but it says please clean I said no it says
Starting point is 00:07:49 please do not disturb I had put the sign on that said please come in and clean didn't hear her not because I'm deaf watching the TV and I was running man sideways naked and she was standing there looking direct view from the door direct up the badge into the crack straight up the canal straight up the canal she saw what I had for breakfast I also love her commitment to doing her job properly she's like I won't leave she's like I won't leave because you said you wanted your room cleaned so I'll stay in case it was my fault it was absolutely my fault but she was so committed you traumatized her I reckon she's seeing worse I'm quite neat and tidy in the room and the room all right yeah I mean like look if we had to see one person's I'm glad
Starting point is 00:08:36 it was yours and not mine but honestly like this is the PSA people like read the sign that you put on it was a flippy sign 180 you know just make sure you put the right sign on you can't invite someone into your room and then scare the bejeebs out of them yeah all right well it's a 50 50 I I mean, I had a really good trip. I think this is the longest I've ever been away from the kids without, like, obviously without seeing them, without Matt. It was 11 days all up. No, 11 nights all up.
Starting point is 00:09:01 We did India and then we did Bali. And on day one, so I land in India. And I want your opinion on this, because this is like the one eventful thing that happened in my relationship whilst I was away from Matt. And I want to know who you think is in the wrong in this instance. So I received a message from Matt and it said, hey, where are the car keys? keys now I'm in India I'm very far away from being at home in Sydney and I was like well I have my set of keys with me what do you mean where are the car keys like I've got my keys you have a set of
Starting point is 00:09:28 keys and he had misplaced his keys but I had traveled with my keys and so then there was no keys in the house at all and he was so angry at me for days like he was good but he was angry at me because he was like it makes no sense that you took the keys with you okay and I dug in deep I was like, no, they are my keys. I can travel with them if I want to. And he's like, what are you going to do with them in another country? Irrelevant what I do with them, Matt. They're mine. Takesha's sitting over there and she's like, you're so in the wrong. No, I don't think you are. I'm not biased. I think I am. No, you are not. Wash your mouth out. You both have a set of keys. It's his responsibility. He's a grown ass man. If he loses them, that's not on you. He's gaslighting
Starting point is 00:10:11 you. No. He's key gaslighting you. No, I genuinely don't think you're in the wrong. Do you know what happened with the other set of keys if you lost them as well then it changes the whole story we found out that the other set of keys were just locked inside the car so he could never get the poor guy two kids no car for 11 days he just had to taxi around no it was a nightmare dude you just call someone to come and open the car do you cost a lot of money no one well and two weeks of Taxing with kids doesn't cost money. Yes, you just call someone to – it takes two seconds. They put the little slidey thing in the window
Starting point is 00:10:49 and they just put the window down. It's incredible. Okay, well, he didn't do that. Anyway, guys, can I just say, before we get into, like, me raging about my many things on this episode, I missed you. I missed doing this. I'm so glad we're back. Are you talking to Keisha and I?
Starting point is 00:11:03 To everyone. To everyone, all you guys listening, to you, Brittany, to you, Keisha. There's no one else here. Jono's on holidays now, so it's just us. Back to the old days. Honestly. But I missed you guys. Jono's only been here five seconds.
Starting point is 00:11:13 He's on vacation. He's literally taking six weeks off. The guy just started. He's only been here six weeks. Butter boy. Will he listen to this? Do you reckon he's coming back? Nah, he's on a full holiday mode.
Starting point is 00:11:25 He does not care about it. He's left us for dead. Maybe he's keeping an eye on us though. Nah. Do you reckon? In case he is, hope you have fun, Jono. Be safe. Be safe out there.
Starting point is 00:11:37 It's great. Okay, no, we do have to talk about something. So because I'm jet lagged, I've been up all night and because I've got nothing else to do. Brittany has her finger on the pulse. I do. I've been just reading the news all night. I cannot tell you how many times I refresh the news.
Starting point is 00:11:50 I'm news obsessed anyway. Like I start my day every day with the news. So I was progressively reading it through the night and I saw a picture of Margot Robbie pop up and it said Margot Robbie pregnant. And I was like, oh my God. And I looked at the picture. It looks like maybe she has this tiny little bump if that, or she could have eaten a big pasta because she is in Italy on Lake Como. Yeah, so she's in Lake Como and the photo of her is
Starting point is 00:12:13 she's wearing a black blazer. She's got a white crop top underneath and there is a hint of the tiniest belly. The hint of a delicious fettuccine carbonara. Yep. That's what it looks like, right? But it said she's pregnant. So I was like, that's amazing. So I clicked on the article and it didn't really actually say anything about her being pregnant from any other source other than an article saying we saw this photo and thought she was pregnant. Then another hour went past and all of a sudden, every hour throughout the night, I saw every news article around the world, every publication that I follow, everyone reporting that Margot Robbie's pregnant. But no one had a statement from Margot Robbie that said, you know, announcing our child. And these headlines are literally saying she's pregnant, announces first child.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Yeah, I want to read out a couple for you. So, I mean, and who knows, because we're recording this at nine o'clock on Monday morning. She might come out. yeah, as it stands right now, Margot Robbie or her husband have not confirmed that they are pregnant. But these are the headlines that are currently running. People, Margot Robbie is pregnant, expecting first baby. Vogue Australia, Margot Robbie is pregnant with her first child. Daily Mail, pregnant Margot Robbie admitted she'd have a baby only when she was ready after becoming sick of people asking if she's preparing for a family life after Blockbuster Barbie. So not only have
Starting point is 00:13:30 they said that she's sick of people asking, they've also said she's pregnant. The list goes on like e-news, Margot Robbie is pregnant, like news.com, Margot Robbie is pregnant. So when Britt came in this morning and she told me about this, and then I saw the photos and looked at the news articles, the first thing that we did is try and find a statement or some sort of affirmation from Margot herself that she is in fact pregnant. As I said, as it stands at this moment, she has not said that she is pregnant. And I was filled with potentially an unreasonable amount of rage about this because I cannot believe that so many and also so many female-led media outlets have reported verbatim that she is pregnant when she herself has not confirmed this.
Starting point is 00:14:13 And I think surely, surely we have come far enough in this day and age that we have learnt the lesson that we shouldn't be reporting on women's bodies unless they tell us it's okay to do so. Yeah. And when you read many of the articles, they say in it, confirmed by sources. and sources is always the term that media uses when they don't actually have any confirmation from anything or anyone and they want to print something. So everyone is saying confirmed by sources close to the couple. I'm calling bullshit on that because if it was confirmed by someone close to the couple, it would probably be a PR team and they would take claim of that. They would take ownership. Margot's team have confirmed she's pregnant. Now she very well could be pregnant and
Starting point is 00:14:54 we hope that she is and she's happy and she's healthy, but that's not the issue here. The issue here is there is one photo from one moment taken of her with her husband getting onto a boat in late coma in a crop top and the world has gone bonkers saying she's pregnant how do we know she's not going through fertility treatments how do we know what her pregnancy journey has or hasn't been imagine if she is not pregnant yeah and this is what the world is talking about I think it is so wrong yeah I agree and I and I just I think I was surprised by how many and I know I just mentioned it but how many female-led news articles and news groups were reporting on this as though it is fact when we haven't received confirmation yet and I guess not only is it you know I hope
Starting point is 00:15:36 that she is pregnant I hope that she's pregnant and she was at a point where she was ready for the world to talk about it with such conviction because you never know what someone's going through in their own fertility journey and just because someone is a celebrity doesn't mean that they're immune to that she is so tiny in her frame and and I think the thing that's like really important to mention here is that her quote unquote baby belly is so small. It is so subtle that I myself do not feel comfortable to look at her and go 100% she's pregnant. And I know some people might refer to this as like her Rihanna moment, you know, Rihanna on stage and she was like beautifully pregnant. And that was her real wow moment. The difference in that was that she
Starting point is 00:16:16 was unmistakably pregnant. She was like six or seven months pregnant at the time. But also she made a big point of it it was a big show and it was a reveal rihanna this is her privately getting on a boat and a long lens paparazzi is taking a photo of her totally i have looked more pregnant than she looks with ibs before like that is my sister has looked my sister sherry has really severe ibs i have seen her before she was pregnant with a bigger belly than marco robbie in that picture purely from eating the wrong thing yeah and i also think it couldn't just be that it could also be maybe she's going through fertility treatment i mean i know when you were doing your egg freezing Brit, you were so swollen. And often, I mean, that's like such a often hurtful
Starting point is 00:16:56 part of doing IVF treatment is that you can look and feel pregnant when you're not pregnant. So I just think it's so amazing that everyone loves her so much and wants to be supportive of her. But I think that this was done in really the wrong way. And I really hope that we can all reflect on the excitement and the momentum around this and also realize that this is a real woman who did not announce that she is pregnant and the whole world is talking about it, which is just insane to me. But we were just talking about this, the three of us,
Starting point is 00:17:25 before we started recording, and imagine if this was like a PR on her behalf just to prove that the whole plot of Barbie was correct. Like how amazing would that have been for her to afterwards say, look, this is the reason I did it. This is the reason we filmed Barbie because of all you, mother beep. Yeah, imagine if she turns around and says, I'm not pregnant. imagine anyway we'll know tomorrow when this episode comes out what's happening I think she
Starting point is 00:17:53 probably will be after all that I think she probably will be because there's a part of me that's like okay so many people have reported on it that I hope for her sake that she is because it would just be such a horrible feeling to be in that position and not be and the world reporting that you are yeah something else I have seen in the news has made me very angry now Laura I was really shocked that when I put this article in our like prep sheet where at the start of the week we all put stuff that we want to talk about, I put this in and you didn't know who this was. I knew who it was.
Starting point is 00:18:26 I didn't know that she'd gotten married. Which is shocking to me. Exclaimer. It's Olivia Kulpo. Kulpo? Okay, it's Kulpo. Olivia Kulpo. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:36 And the reason why I didn't know that she got married is because I wasn't reading the news, okay? I was ignoring the internet and both of you guys while I was on holidays. I do. I felt that to my core. So Olivia Culpo, if you don't know who she is, she's a former Miss Universe. She was Miss Universe in 2012. The reason I sort of knew who she was and know about her is one of my best friends,
Starting point is 00:18:58 Renee Aris, was also like in the Miss Universe. She was in, I think, the top five or something. Anyway. She was in that orbit. Yeah, she was in the orbit. So I sort of knew her through her, if that makes sense. Anyway, I've been following her for a long time. Don't actually physically know her, just follow her.
Starting point is 00:19:13 But she got married. Britt has a parasocial relationship with Olivia Culpo. No, I genuinely don't. But she did get married to NFL star from the San Francisco 49ers, Christian McCaffrey. So she got married on June 29 in a big, luscious, beautiful Rhode Island wedding. I thought it looked stunning. It was a beautiful summer's day. It was hot.
Starting point is 00:19:35 It was in a garden. and Olivia Culpo had a beautiful dress on that was high neck, long sleeve, to the ground. She had minimal makeup on and my God, has this caused a stir? I mean, considering it was hot, that's a bold choice in itself. She also had a train that was like all the way down the back and covered her entire face. So like she was very, very covered. Now, the reason why this has caused quite a stir and people are sitting on very extreme ends around her dress is not because of the dress itself. It actually has nothing to do with the dress. It has to do with the things that she said about the dress. So there is a TikToker. Her name is gown eyed girl. She's got
Starting point is 00:20:12 1.2 million followers. The video that she's made around this has got 4.8 million views so far. Now she's a stylist. Her name is Kennedy Bingham. And she has spoken about how much she didn't like Olivia Culpo's dress, but not just the dress. What she didn't like are the statements that she made in vogue surrounding her choice of having an extremely traditional dress. So Olivia said that she wanted something that felt as serious to her as the commitment that she was making in marriage. She says, it's a covenant. It's the beginning of the rest of your life. And it's the union and bond of two people forever. People have also gotten up in arms about the fact that she said, I didn't want it to exude sex in any way, shape or form, which is an interesting thing when
Starting point is 00:20:58 your career has been based around being a bikini model. But she said, when I think about what Christian, who is her husband, what he loves and the moments that he thinks that I am the most beautiful, it's absolutely in something like this, timeless, covered and elegant. Now, the thing that people are up in arms about is this association between Olivia taking her wedding seriously and wanting a dress that reflects that. And I guess the implication that if somebody wears a more revealing dress that they're not taking their marriage seriously well I don't think it's just that it's there were actually multiple levels to this so it was the dress itself I know you said it wasn't a dress but there was a lot of hate for the dress because of a they didn't people didn't
Starting point is 00:21:40 like it b people were disappointed because she's usually a swimsuit model that they wanted to see more of her as opposed to being covered up you mean how conservative the dress was itself yes how conservative the dress was. Like the dress itself, if you extrapolate her comments from the dress, they're two separate things. People were hating on the dress regardless. They were hating on her comments and then they were hating on her hair and makeup to the point that this gown-eyed girl who is the wedding stylist that did the TikTok went on so far to say that she was a pick-me girl because of what she chose on her wedding and her makeup choice. Now the internet is really divided between being on this TikTok aside and agreeing with her that she's a pick
Starting point is 00:22:22 me, that she's not doing anything for women by making these choices, that she made the wrong dress choice, that there's a lot of internalized misogyny there. To other people saying, I don't understand what you're saying in any capacity. I don't agree with you. I think she looks beautiful. I think people are taking it out of context. Me personally, I'm on the second side. I think this whole thing is utterly ridiculous there's probably one point that this tiktoker makes out of her entire rant that went for like six minutes or something like six minutes we'll link it in the show notes you can listen to the six minute rant after our rant six minutes and i watched it read the articles went to the vogue interview went to olivia's instagram page looked at all her posts
Starting point is 00:23:04 read all the comments went back to the tiktok read all those comments and i was actually furious at the people that were horrifically commenting on Olivia's own Instagram and her own photos about how horrendous she is and how horrendous she looked. I think people have taken it a little bit too seriously. Like at the end of the day, it's one person's wedding. It's her wedding day guys. It's the best day of her life. The thing is she is a swimsuit model. And I guess the reason why people probably feel a little bit of a bait and switch is because she's somebody who has a lot of influence in the fashion world. People were waiting to see what she wore for her wedding. People are waiting with bated breath for the reveal of her wedding dress.
Starting point is 00:23:44 And so then to take the route of something that is so conservative, I guess a lot of the people who do follow her are not necessarily conservative people. So it would be a bit of a contrast. But I think overall, it's not so much the surprise of the dress. The thing that I think most people who have taken offense have been upset by was the comment where she says, when I think about what Christian likes and what he loves and the moments that he thinks I am the most beautiful is absolutely in something like this, timeless, covered and elegant. And I guess for me, that's where the internalized misogyny comes in because it's like,
Starting point is 00:24:19 well, you're saying that the reason why you chose that dress is because your partner likes you the most, thinks you are the most beautiful when you are completely covered up, which is a very interesting way to view someone when their job is to be a swimsuit model. So you met her as a swimsuit model. But now that she's your wife, you want her to be covered. And I think that there is sort of this like expectation or thought that, well, you can be one way, but then when you're a wife, you should be more demure. You should be more covered. See, I think that it's been completely taken out of context. And I don't necessarily agree with that statement at all. He fell in love with her, like you said, as a swimsuit model. He loves her as a swimsuit model.
Starting point is 00:24:58 He loves her exactly how she is with everything that she wears. Like if you go onto her Instagram, she's in always beautiful tight little dresses like shows legs shows swim like everything's always out it's sexy she's hot she's a smoke show he loves her like that I do have a problem with the word covered but I think that that has been taken out of context I don't think she actually thought about what she was saying and that it would have this sort of a ripple effect I think she probably worded it the wrong way but at the end of the day I guarantee you every single person here has an opinion on on a specific way their partner dresses that they really love like you love your partner you always think they're beautiful you always think they're sexy or hot
Starting point is 00:25:41 but there's always specific things they wear where you're like oh I love this the most I do it with Ben all the time I'm sure he does it with me people do it the fact that he he's not saying now you're my wife, you're covered. He's not saying that at all. But for them, a very religious couple in a church on their wedding day, in front of God, in front of their friends, she chose to wear a covered dress. And I don't think she deserves the hate she's getting. No, I don't think she deserves the hate. Don't you think though, Britt? I mean, it's interesting that you only think it's been taken out of context. Because I think that maybe this has got a bit of the Madonna whore complex. This idea that, for example, you could have sex with someone who you're just
Starting point is 00:26:18 casually singing. You could have rough, like really passionate, like full on sex with them, but you wouldn't have sex with your wife that way because you see one person as the whore who you can treat and do whatever you want to. And the other one as the Madonna. So you might only have missionary safe sex with them because you can't get your brain around the fact that actually women can be multifaceted. So I kind of feel like this, this has got a little bit of the Madonna whore complex into it. This idea that like on your wedding day, you must look virginal on your wedding day, you must look covered and it must be a covenant around this marriage and that the way you dress reflects your values in your marriage. But maybe even if that is correct, why is that
Starting point is 00:26:57 anyone else's issue? If that's, if they have taken a traditional route and said, we want a traditional wedding, every wedding used to be like that. If we go back in time, that's what people wore. If they've decided to take a traditional wedding as a couple, why is it anyone else's business because they haven't put it on everyone else and said if you're serious you should wear it like this it's their opinions and it's up to us to decide what we want to be offended by and I cannot believe the world is offended because she decided to wear a traditional wedding dress on her own wedding day I'm not offended and I sorry not you I mean the world I do not and I will say this put it on record I do not care enough about Olivia's someone who's didn't even
Starting point is 00:27:36 know, got married about her dress choices that I would like, you know, crusade into a deep debate about this. But the one thing that I do find very interesting is when you are a public figure and you do public interviews around your wedding, it becomes a commercial piece. It absolutely does. And it does have a PR element attached to it. So if you don't want people to have an opinion, don't do any press surrounding your wedding. You've done a one-on-one Vogue interview, an exclusive Vogue interview, and sold your images into Vogue. So I think it is understandable that people have an opinion because they're always going to if you're going to be that level of public.
Starting point is 00:28:17 But I think it is a question as to what is and isn't acceptable. You know, how far and how much of an opinion are people allowed to have? Sure, have an opinion. Don't go and bombard and abuse the girl in her own photos. Don't do a six-minute rant where you say, quote, it's very clear that this was not a wedding. This was a conservative campaign and it wasn't even well done. You took this disingenuous pick-me route that honestly felt more like you were thinking
Starting point is 00:28:39 about your narrative than your actual marriage. Who are you to say this girl was not? It makes me really angry because if anyone's a pick-me girl, it's this TikToker. And I swear by that. There is another part of this that we haven't touched on, which is another reason why people feel as though it was a bit more of a conservative campaign. And that's the fact that she chose Dolce & Gabbana to design the dress. If you are not familiar with the history of Dolce & Gabbana, they have a very checkered
Starting point is 00:29:06 past when it comes to more progressive stances. They have had really, really unethical views around IVF for gay couples. And I think that that in itself seems like a very conservative choice when you bundle all these other decision making and all these other quotes together. That's why people have kind of pulled everything together and gone, this doesn't sit right for me. This feels like a conservative campaign. This is the only thing that I do really agree with wholeheartedly,
Starting point is 00:29:34 Dolce & Gabbana, The Choice. Now she has said that she has worked with them for many, many years and she has a relationship with them and that's why she chose them, which, okay, fine. But they do have, I mean, check it isn't even the right word. This is one of the things they've said about IVF. Problematic. Yeah, that I think is really disgusting.
Starting point is 00:29:51 Quote, you are born and you have a father and a mother, or at least it should be like this. That's why I am not convinced by chemical children, synthetic babies' wombs for rent. End quote. So a lot of people have a problem with, I mean, they've done a lot of other stuff. They've made a lot of racist remarks and, you know, they're problematic. But the problem, the thing is, is like, if she has a long history with working with them, she knows that they have these stances and they have these beliefs as a company. So therefore, it once again reinstates this idea that she holds very traditional values and very
Starting point is 00:30:24 traditional views. And so when people say that this is a trad wife campaign, I think that that's wise because not only is it the dress that she's chosen, the way that she speaks about the covenant of marriage, but also the fact that she's chosen a dress designer who is deeply problematic with their values around what pertains to a family. Yeah. What I don't agree with is this idea that she's pushing this conservative agenda because immediately after the wedding, at the reception, she was half naked in in her second reception outfit like she just had the the dress was literally just like a swimsuit like almost like a one-piece like high cut and then it had a see-through peplum is that what they're called i think like a bubble skirt i would have said
Starting point is 00:31:07 yeah an umbrella she wore an umbrella she took the post of the holder of the umbrella and she put it around her waist it was cool it was edgy it was different but it was sexy and see-through and there wasn't much of it. How is she pushing a conservative agenda? She just chose a conservative dress because she liked the dress. It suited her values. It suited what she wanted and she was happy. And then she went and lived her other life straight away. She partied hard and she was drinking and she was in this dress that showed a lot of skin and people still have a problem. The girl can't win. And this is what I have a problem with. The other thing that people have been like really ranting about is in this Vogue interview, they asked her about her makeup and
Starting point is 00:31:47 hair. And she, they, you know, what makeup did you use? And she went on to say the makeup she used, but she said, I took a route of wearing not much makeup. I didn't want to wear a lot of makeup listed off the makeup that she had, but she said, I didn't have brows. I didn't have lashes. I didn't wear a lip liner. Now people have taken problem with that. And that's where people are saying you're a pick me girl. Cause you're trying to say that you're better than us. Cause you don't have to wear makeup at a stretch guys. That is not what she is saying. She was literally asked what makeup did you wear? What was your look for the wedding? And not wearing much makeup is a makeup choice. It is the makeup look. So for her to say that she didn't wear much makeup,
Starting point is 00:32:28 why are we then saying she's a pick me girl? I think it's because there is this rise of the trad wife. There is this rise of this idea that we're supposed to be just effortlessly beautiful without any energy. And we should wake up and we should be wearing beautiful clothings with our hair immaculate and just have gorgeous skin and be perfect there is this rise across the internet and so I think when people get really angry when they see it and it's they see it being spoken it's just like repelling against it and so I know that that may not have been her intention and it's obviously not the way that you interpreted it Brit and it makes you annoyed but there is a big portion of the population who felt that way from watching it and from seeing it and so I think that
Starting point is 00:33:10 there must be some validity in the way those people felt. I think that that has to be internalized. She literally answered a question about her makeup. Like we are making this something for ourselves, how we feel, what we take from it. She's not a trad wife. She owns multiple businesses. She's made her own money in life. There is nothing about her that is that. We are saying this, literally, this whole thing has kick-started because she chose a conservative wedding dress and didn't wear a lot of makeup so people are then saying oh you're full of it you're making people feel bad for your natural beauty two weeks before she did a whole ask me anything on her instagram and openly spoke about the filler that she's had the botox that she's had the lasers that
Starting point is 00:33:53 she gets on her skin how she put botox to raise her eyebrows like she doesn't pretend to not do these things she's been really open about hey obviously the woman is like stunning like it's disgusting she's so good looking and she's obviously a smart intelligent woman because she does run businesses but she's been I just really feel for her like she can't win just because she answered questions about not wearing makeup and people like stop trying to be effortlessly beautiful to make us feel bad none of that was to make you feel bad and she literally told you two weeks before in her wedding prep questions that she did filler then she said she dissolved her filler in her lips and she showed before and afters then she said I'm gonna think I'll think
Starting point is 00:34:31 I'll have no filler for the wedding then put it back in like she's been really open about that do you think when you are a public figure and you make your money off being, you know, a fashionable, stylish, people do hang on every, like they hang on the edge of their seats to see what you're going to wear. And then you do exclusive interviews for things like Vogue around your wedding. Do you think it is or isn't appropriate for people to have opinions around the way that you present? Are people always going to have opinions? Absolutely. Like you can, we'll never live in a life where you shouldn't have an opinion or don't have an opinion. What I don't think is necessary is the incessant harassment and bullying and nastiness that
Starting point is 00:35:13 comes off the back of it. Like when I look at what has happened to Olivia in the last week from her wedding, it actually disgusts me. It is nothing but unnecessary bullying. She hasn't said anything to anyone in particular. She answered questions about how she feels on her day, the dress she chose, the choice she made with her husband, the makeup choice she chose to have on her own wedding day. And we have just absolutely annihilated her.
Starting point is 00:35:38 Nothing makes me angrier than bullying and online bullying because it is a pile on. And when you are someone like this TikToker that's kickstarted, when you have millions of followers and you do something with such nasty comments about someone, then you put her in the hashtags to send everyone to her. Yeah, you make it okay for other people to be mean. You make it okay and it's not necessary. And she's making statements based on opinion, not fact. her own opinion, her own internalized issues that she evidently has and other people have.
Starting point is 00:36:08 And I just think it's a really important time to sit back and look at this and ask yourself if it does offend you. I totally get it because I do understand it. I understand why some people would be offended about her comments, but then ask yourself why. Why do you let it? And what do you think the best outcome is? Do you think the best response to that is to go and harass the girl on her wedding day? I don't know, because I think it's up to us what we get offended by. And imagine if that was you on your wedding day, on the best day of your life, and millions, plural, of people are personally attacking you, like tagging you on your own page in your own home. Imagine how that would feel. All right, it's time for Accidentally Unfiltered. If you
Starting point is 00:36:51 have an Accidentally Unfiltered story, slide into our DMs because we love your embarrassing stories. here goes I was at work this one day and I was setting up the room for the morning I was walking around whilst also discussing plans for the day with my two male co-workers and then I felt something inside the leg of my trousers it was such a weird sensation it kind of felt like my pants were stuck to my leg so as I was chatting to them I stood there and kind of shook my leg a little bit and I shook my leg again and then everyone just stopped talking I looked at the floor and there it was a pair of my small lacy undies only to realize that my baby blue lace underwear that must have got caught during the laundry cycle had been stuck inside my pants and
Starting point is 00:37:36 were now lying in the floor in the middle of the three of us mortified i pretended i hadn't seen them why would you pretend like you haven't seen them the only question i really have here is were they dirty or were they clean because it's 10 times worse if you fling them across and there's like, dried discharge on them, that is ten times worse than if they are fresh out of the wash. She said it from a laundry cycle, but I think she's being kind to herself because usually when you put on pants that have undies still in them, it's because they're the pants that you just took off
Starting point is 00:38:04 with the undies still in them. And they get stuck. Oh, no, but sometimes if they've come out of the dryer, you know how the fuzzy friction makes them stick to the – you know how the fuzzy dryer friction makes them stick to the – Okay, my issue more so is that she pretended that they weren't there when everyone saw them fly out of her pants. She goes –
Starting point is 00:38:20 Also, you're like, not mine. She goes, I pretended I hadn't seen them, pretended I was still just cleaning and organising things and then I made my way over to them and picked them up like I didn't know what they were, looked at them confused and then popped them casually in the bin. I had no idea if anyone else really noticed. They didn't say anything but I think that they were just being kind
Starting point is 00:38:38 because I was so embarrassed. You know what I would have done? Of course they were just being kind. I would have looked down at them and then looked up at one of the guys and walked over and high-fived him and been like, yeah, you did, as if like he got lucky and then it fell out of his pants. I would have deflected 100%. I would have been like, that's my party trick, guys.
Starting point is 00:38:56 I could just get my undies off that quick. Oh, I'm ovulating. I don't know. Anyway. I told you about the time where we went to the beach and we went one day. It was like going down like the bush track to the beach and we went one day and then the next morning we went down again
Starting point is 00:39:13 and my undies were on the ground from the day before. Like I dropped them. and I obviously must have dropped them when I was coming back from the beach, like my black cotton-on undies. And I was like, oh, fuck, that's my undies from yesterday. And Matt was like, just pick them up. And I was like, I'm not going to pick them up. People will think I'm picking up a stranger's undies.
Starting point is 00:39:28 He was like, you're an idiot. So he picked them up. Anyways, brought them home. Guess what? Weren't yours. Weren't my undies. I took home someone's dirty cotton-on undies. It's so gross.
Starting point is 00:39:42 It's so gross. It's so gross. You remember I told this story years ago but I'm going to tell you again in case you knew. I remember when I went to the gym, that early gym class, and you have to take a gym towel and I was in like the second back line. There were like four lines and I went to flick my towel, my gym towel out to put down on the mat and my undies, not clean,
Starting point is 00:40:02 flung out into the next row in front of me and everyone stopped and looked and I had to be like, sorry, like walked over and picked my undies up, flung them, probably hit someone in the head, hooked on someone's ear, who knows. So good. Imagine getting hit in the back by Brittany Hockley's undies. People pay for that, right? Someone out there, I took your undies home.
Starting point is 00:40:18 Also pretty great. Probably mine. All right, what is your suck and sweet for the week? Okay, I know what your suck is. What? Just being away from Ben, being home. No, I actually have a bigger suck. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:40:30 Yeah. My little one-year-old nephew is having an operation today. Oh, yeah. Yeah, because it's a big operation. He is down here at the kids' hospital because he lives in a country town and they can't do it anywhere than a big city kids hospital. So as we speak right now,
Starting point is 00:40:46 he's anesthetized and he's having his operation. So he was with me last night. And yeah, it's like, it's hard when, I mean, I'm not even a mom. He's just my nephew. But when you see a child in so much pain and so unwell
Starting point is 00:40:58 and they can't really convey it other than, because he's only one, so he's not speaking, but you can see it. He stops breathing all the time. It's really horrific. So that's my suck this week. A little bubba, but they're staying with you.
Starting point is 00:41:10 They're staying with me for the first few days and then they have to be really close to the hospital for two weeks. So they're down here for two weeks, but they've also got a, so they've got a one-year-old. Oh, he's just over one. And then they've got a one-week-old. So I'm just going to help out with the one-week-old so they can go up. Because you can't take a one-week-old back to a hospital now when there's so many infections and stuff.
Starting point is 00:41:28 But anyway, it's a whole thing. So that's my suck. It's also such a full-on operation for such a tiny baby. It is. It is. Well, they had to wait. He should have had it. He stops breathing all the time.
Starting point is 00:41:39 He should have had it ages ago, but he's too little. Yeah. So they're like, you've just got to wait until he's a bit bigger. Man, being a parent is like, it's your biggest fear, right? So hard. Totally. So yeah, that's my suck. And then obviously being away from Ben, but that's nothing in comparison.
Starting point is 00:41:53 My sweet for this week, I guess in reverse, I get to see my family while they're down here. So my sister-in-law's going to be here with the one week old and I haven't met him yet. So he's my new nephew, like literally newborn. So I cannot like, I can't wait to see him. He's going to be like a little nugget. is so tiny. And then, yeah, my brother's here. And so it's, I guess it's one of those catch 22s. It sucks that they're here, but they're here. But you get to spend time with your family. Yeah. My suck. Look, I have a, I have a pretty big suck. Like my grandma, who I speak about a lot,
Starting point is 00:42:24 my Nana, who has dementia. And you guys would remember, I spoke about her on the episode we did all around dementia with Melissa Levi. That was quite a few months ago now. She's really sick and she's being admitted to hospital, she's in emergency care at the moment and things are not very good, which is really just like, you know, it's part of life. I kind of feel like so privileged that I've had my nana around for so, so long, being 37 and still having my nan, but I also think it is so laced with sadness that she's been so unwell for so long
Starting point is 00:42:54 and she's so unhappy being alive. Yeah, and there's this idea that it is true in a way, but it's not true. It's an idea that, you know, well, they lived a long life and of course they did, but that doesn't make it any less sad that that time is coming to an end. Yeah, and also like I'm sure that there's other people who have been at this point with their grandparents. It's like there's no more life ahead of you.
Starting point is 00:43:16 Like there's nothing to look forward to. She's in a home, she's so unhappy and she can't remember anything so she gets quite upset and she gets quite depressed because she doesn't remember that she has grandchildren. She doesn't remember the things that are exciting to look forward to. On the flip side to that, which is also the good part is like, she also doesn't remember that she was sad. So like it's, you know, it's, it's a catch 22, but she's, she's really unwell.
Starting point is 00:43:41 So yeah, that's just kind of a big thing to deal with. And also I feel very bad for my mom because she's got a lot going on at the moment. So the big sucks. So is that your mom's mom? My mom's mom. My nana and my nana and papa, who I kind of lived with when I was a kid. And then on the suite, it was Matt's birthday. We went down to Jamboree and stayed down there for a couple of days after I got back from
Starting point is 00:44:00 Bali in India and it was so good spending time like as a family and I miss the girls like I cannot tell you how much I missed them when I was away I had one night where I just couldn't it was like four in the morning I could not sleep and I had just been crying all night because my my wild intrusive thoughts were like telling me that something bad was going to happen while I was away and I just couldn't get to sleep so yeah I missed them so much we had such a beautiful time yeah and then that's it that's my sweep oh that's a nice and guys we're back the podcast is back if you've missed us we're here we will never leave you again until the next holiday yes tomorrow's interview with frankie muniz aka malcolm in the middle this is one of those
