Hi guys and welcome back to another episode of Life Uncut. I'm Laura. I'm Brittany. And
this is Off Cuts where we bring you all the stuff that we've been talking about in our
group chats this week and it didn't make it to the main episode. That was a great explanation.
Nom nom nom nom nom nom nom. This is our nom nom nom episode. This is our little nom nom
episode that gets you into the weekend. That's what it is. I haven't really talked about this
yet, guys. Just quickly. Sorry. I am very close to heading back over to the love of my life,
my beautiful husband, to Italy. I'm like a week away from going back to Ben. We haven't really
spoken about it. It did feel like a, it felt like a real false start because you were like,
I'm moving to Italy. It is actually very soon. I am actually sick of it. It's my fault. But I
did explain it. I said, woo, I'm moving. And then I was like, I'm back. Every day I get someone
that comments on a story or a post or DMs me that says,
I thought you were moving to Italy, liar.
And I'm like, sorry.
You did gaslight them.
I was like, it's pretty obvious I'm on a TV show right now.
Like I'm filming a show here.
I was like, it's not.
And then Ben got into a fight with someone the other day on my post.
We need to talk about this one day on the pod so people understand this.
Ben loves fighting with people in the comments section on Instagram.
I see it all the time.
He doesn't like fighting.
but he's a comment brawler for sure he cannot stand anybody saying anything negative to me like
it just grinds his gears I guess he's not from this world where he's used to people being nasty
and like I mean we shouldn't accept it but if anyone says anything and sometimes it's not even
that bad Ben is in there fighting with people and I'm like babe you gotta like he's defending me he's
not just fighting but I was like you gotta stop like but Ben eggs them on I know he'll be like
some of the things that he writes but I actually don't want to say them but he's just as bad I'm
Like, Ben, stop.
Don't throw out those insults.
Sometimes he goes full German.
Yeah, don't throw those insults around in the comments section, okay?
No one needs that to end up on Daily Mail.
I say that.
I'm like, babe, you can't say that.
He's like, well, they can't speak to my wife like that.
And he gets in there and he goes, don't talk to my wife like that.
And somebody the other day said, oh, okay, super fan.
And he's like, yeah, I'm a super fan of my wife.
And I was like, yeah, you tell them, babe.
I'm like, stop talking.
I want it to end.
I want it to stop right now.
Support me, but don't do it like that.
I know.
I was like, baby, just let them go.
Oh dear. Well, look, like we said, this episode is all the stuff that we've just genuinely been
obsessed with. Britt, you can kick it off. Okay. I want to get your vibe on this because
this, when I read it, I was mortified for this person. Now this person is Sydney Sweeney.
Sydney Sweeney has been cast in a movie called Scandalous. So it's a new film that is,
I guess it's like a biography in a way of a woman named Kim Novak. So Kim Novak was a very famous
actress they say she was maybe one of the last of the Hollywood golden age you know when they I
guess that's like the Marilyn Monroe-y kind of age so they say she was one of the last of that age
because she's 92 so she's still alive so Sydney Sweeney's been cast to play a young Kim Novak
and Sydney's like I'm honored to play her we're all excited blah blah blah and Kim Novak has come
out and said like basically like ill no like no I don't like why have we cast Sydney Sweeney
so she literally said quote I would never have approved the casting and that Sydney Sweeney is
totally wrong for the role because she looks sexy all the time and this is the part I don't like her
reasoning she looks sexy all the time and she sticks out so much above the waist so she's
basically saying she's got very big boobs and she's sexy and the reason she goes in to say that
is she's worried that it's going to overly sexualize the film because the film is about
Kim's love story when she was young. She was in an interracial relationship in the 1950s and it
was very controversial back then. And a lot of the big media companies and her agencies and
everyone else was saying, this is going to ruin your career. Like you can't be in this relationship.
And so Kim now at 92 is saying, I don't want that movie to be reflected as something overly
sexual when it was about so much more. You know, she's like our real connection and who we are.
But this does scream when you say like, she's just so, there's so much above the waves. It
screams of like your nana can get away with saying things that no one is allowed to say like okay
you're in your 90s so you can say something that's just totally offensive and just like it's gay get
away with it when you said that you were mortified I thought that you meant you were mortified for
Kim Novak no I'm mortified for Sydney oh I kind of feel mortified for Kim like imagine imagine that
like you know you're an actress you've been an actress your whole life like you're still alive
for someone to tell your story you're still here on the planet and someone says you know we want
to tell your story that time in 1950s was groundbreaking what an incredible time that was
and like what a pioneer a revolution whatever however you want to say it and we're gonna cast
this person and you're like fuck no I don't want them to play me but you get no say in the actress
that plays you that would be terrible well that's the question is about like how much say should you
have if it's a biography and they're they're literally recreating the biggest part of your
life and I know we've touched on in the past but I think if you're still walking this earth you
should be able to put forward people that you would love to see play or think that you think
they represent you well but I'm not mortified that's not a reason to be mortified for Kim
imagine you've come out to the world saying I am honored to play Kim and Kim's like fuck that like
she's completely shut it down do you know why though it's because Sydney Sweeney has been
really controversial recently like she is not an actress that is free from I guess like the drama
and the controversies that surrounded her I think if you're going to choose someone to play your
life you're probably and you're someone like Kim Novak you're not going to choose someone who is
shrouded in like the pop culture side of controversy that she has been you know and like I don't know
people like love to hate Sydney Sweeney she's not just generally loved I would say and so you kind
of would be like well just just pick someone that everyone likes but I do think if you're
still alive you absolutely should be consulted on the person that they're looking at or like put
some people forward present them with 10 actresses three actresses whatever it is if I was still
alive and then somebody just came out and said we're making this movie about Britney's life and
this is who we're picking I'd be like hey guys I'm still here like do you want to run that by
me at all or do I get a say I think if the person is still on this earth they should get a say in
who they get to play them yeah but we had this exact conversation recently with Daryl Hannah
and love story like you know she didn't get to choose who played her not only did she not get
to choose who played her she didn't even get to choose the version of her that was presented in
the show like this happens more often than not but I do think that if it's a true biography like
you have been consulted it is meant to be created in the likeness of you you'd be pretty disappointed
if they cast an actress that you just don't particularly like I just think this is funny
because I think most people it would be an aesthetic thing for most people right Sydney
Sweeney's arguably one of the most objectively beautiful people that any of us have ever seen
she's hot it's not because of that she doesn't want her to play her like I think it's quite
too funny that's why most people would be like as long as they are the hottest person in Hollywood
I'm happy with them actually being the one who's meant to be representing me well this might just
be me and that's okay we'll all add an opinion before anyone comes for me it's like Margot Robbie
only but I also don't think personally I don't think Sydney Sweeney's a great actress I don't
find her overly believable in a film so like if i was watching somebody play me i would still
want to be pulled into that movie and who they are and i don't think it's her strongest suit
yeah and she's also got the nickname of like maga barbie and remember that interview she did where
she was like she basically said i don't really care about politics i don't talk about politics
but then she seems to always be on the fringe and her family are like republican donors and
all that kind of that's what i mean just unnecessary unnecessarily controversial
because like you think an actress like shows up just to do their job and to act but now in this
day and age we're so invested in all the things that happen around them and the fact that like
she was attached to the jean ad that kind of went down like a lead balloon like there's just been
quite a few things poor sydney sweeney can't cop a break it's just not even that though i don't even
think kim would know that happened i don't think she's up to date with that i think she just
probably looked at her and was like i don't want that girl but then this raises another question
if you were sydney sweeney if you were the actress or the actor that had just announced you were
playing somebody that person had publicly denounced you saying no I don't want her to play
me do you not feel like you should think about pulling out of that movie like it's a job what's
the paycheck delivered baby she doesn't need it she's got so much bank that girl like she also
seems to be always filming of something like I don't think this girl's had a day off in years
look I mean if the person whose story I was telling really had an issue with me playing them
I would be like that's a shame like I would have liked to have gotten a bit of personal endorsement
here but I certainly wouldn't not do the job do you mean like if I'm being cast for the job I
don't think I would do it the reason why I don't think I would I would pull out is purely because
imagine how negative the write-ups would be and that would reflect on her it'd be like Sydney
Sweeney no longer is cast in the role because Kim Novak didn't want it to be like it would reflect
so badly on her you would honor it you would you'd be in charge of that PR and you'd be saying
I respect Kim's voice that she doesn't want me to play her
and, you know, she's still walking this earth
and she's made a choice.
And as much as I would have been honoured,
that's what I would do.
If somebody publicly said, fuck, I don't want you to play me.
Play the victim.
Yeah, play the victim, get a payout.
But here's a question.
We did ask ChatGPT this, but firstly, two questions.
One, if there was a story on your life, Laura,
who would you want to play you?
Like if you could pick someone.
I will pick two people.
Okay.
I only have one.
They can go 50-50.
They can do the start of my life and the end of my life.
Drew Barrymore or Cameron Diaz?
Cute.
Neither of them look like you, though.
Oh, okay.
Oh, Cameron could if she dyed her hair.
Cameron could, actually.
I don't think it's about who looks like you.
I think it's about like I feel like Cameron Diaz is like her scatty energy represents me.
You just really have a Charlie's Angels vibe about you.
Mine doesn't make sense because mine's older than me.
Who's yours?
Maybe they can play me in the future.
Jennifer Aniston.
Oh, yeah.
I get that, though.
So maybe she's playing me in the future because she is, what is she,
15, 20 years older than me?
I don't know.
But she's like my girl crush.
But I did ask ChatGPT.
So Laura and I both said, well, I can tell you what I said.
Brittany Hockley is an Australian media personality.
Who would play her in a movie?
Not mad about it.
It said strong, strong Margot Robbie.
It said the same thing for me.
Fuck.
Just FYI.
And then.
I don't think ChatGPT was the person to consult for this.
It really did zero effort, zero work.
Do you know who the top three are?
This is why it's so sad.
It wasn't good for me.
Margot Robbie.
Sydney Sweeney.
Blake Lively.
Devoed.
Absolutely Devoed.
Yeah, I wrote it in there and it wrote,
no one's ever going to make a movie about you.
Get over yourself.
It did not.
Yours said Margot Robbie as well.
It did.
All right, look.
Something that I have been obsessed with this week.
and now it is not because I am watching it I want I really need this to be clear and I know you guys
all think that I'm like an AI sycophant I'm not but I'm not I'm not I'm not I just like things
that make my life more efficient you also talk about it a lot this arguably is going to make
no one's life more efficient but I am just so perplexed by the fact that it exists okay it is
called the AI fruit love island now you may or may not have seen this if you haven't seen it yet
you will soon it is everywhere it's fucking everywhere okay so ai fruit love island is a
fully ai simulated characters there's watermelina and like they're actually like sexy hot fruit
characters okay so they're sexy hot fruit characters and it is like a simulated love
island but they're all fruit and like the storylines of love island play out except
they're except they're fruit and it's completely made up but it's been completely created by i got
It is going so incredibly viral online. Like these like little mini reels of these Fruit Love Island
are getting like 15, 20 million views per reel. I wanted to read you some of the stats because
this is why I'm saying I'm so perplexed by it. So in under three weeks, AI Fruit Love Island has
had 300 million downloads, like views. Per episode, it's getting 10 to 20 million views.
This is bigger than any Married at First Sight. This is bigger than any free to air TV show that's
ever been created in Australia. It's actually insane. And now people are getting quite upset
about it online because they're calling it AI slop. So it's like the lowest common denominator
of content that is out there. And people are saying that if you are...
My chips are just being delivered to everyone live. Thank you, Lockie.
That's why we pay you the big bucks.
Brittany's just got some hot chips straight to studio. People are saying that if you are one
of these people who are like down the rabbit hole or watching this love fruit AI, that you are
unsavageable like your brain has just turned into absolute morsh that there's nothing left for you
but it is that's what that's where we're at but it's hypnotic okay and i don't know if you've
seen it yet but if you haven't watching two ai fruit kiss and do this kind of like weird smacking
together sound it's it's just so much going on i'm confused as to why it exists but it does
has it changed the way that you look at normal fruit well no it's changed the way that i look
at love island because i'm kind of like why would anyone bother with reality tv now if we all can
just watch fruit do it instead we cannot go down that track but it's funny you say hypnotic because
the way it's described viewers are saying it is disturbing yet hypnotic like they don't want to
like it but they can't look away it's insane that it takes them only three hours of work a week to
hit those stats like to film this compared to like 24 7 filming for three months for the actual love
island show as much as we laugh it's worrying like these shows are being made with no outlay
like they're getting more views and like whoever created this on youtube is making bank they sat
down for three hours and made some fruit and now they're making more than love do you reckon the
pineapple went on there with the right reasons though but do you think they were there for
instagram but the fruit are getting like hot and heavy with each other and they get under the
blankets and they're getting it on under the blanket like it's it's just fucking bizarre okay
it's so weird i know it's obviously going to be something that's a short-lived trend
people are curious and confused so everyone's watching it there's like multiple seasons in
but there's so much they have fruit baby it's kind of like i don't know obviously this is not
ai it's something like a real sidestep to it but i don't understand why the world becomes obsessed
with things that truly make no sense i could think about labubus and lafufus right like
my kids obsessed with labubu it's a fucking weird little furby animal that just has like a random
little like gremlin face and it's covered in fur that company is worth billions of dollars for
making lafufus like where did this come why do we get obsessed with things that make no sense that
was that it's an interesting chat that maybe we'll do another day but it comes down to status
because they put those on really high-end people and the whole idea was this cute thing was attached
to a really expensive designer bag that's how it started so it started become a status symbol like
all of it only started because hollywood did it i just don't think it's that new do you guys have
tamagotchis and stuff yeah they're still around you know they're around again like i'm putting
those on my bag yeah all the kids these days have tamagotchis again i never thought it would come
full circle that i would be the one in the kitchen trying to keep my kids fucking tamagotchi
alive while she's in the bathtub yeah and I killed it and then I had to have a conversation
with Marley about killing a Tamagotchi because I fed it too much sorry and I had this moment
where I was like oh my god I am my nana from 25 years ago she also didn't give a shit about the
Tamagotchi but also wouldn't you rather the Tamagotchi come back now than watching this
slop on YouTube like I think if a Tamagotchi in that little tiny screen where you have to
shovel the poo off and stuff I think that's great if that stuff's coming back that's better than
the alternative which is screen time yeah look I'm here for the micro drama I'm here for the
miniseries do they cheat and stuff yes they're doing everything they're making out they're
cheating they don't have sex though well they do but it's just like it's just simulation under a
blanket like vibrating it's just very confusing but if you do look this up or you come across
if you come across it you'll know what I'm talking about the fruit are objectively hot fruit like
there's a really hot banana there's a really hot berry girl there's a hot pineapple chick like have
They've got turkey teeth and they've all had their hair transploded.
They are hot.
You can tell they're cool.
It's just like a cool cartoon that's kind of for adults.
Like it's really confusing.
But I think the thing that's like the most, I guess,
striking about this is that it's being coded to self-create.
Do you know what I mean?
Like it's an AI creation.
And I just, of all the things that we could do in the world
without time, someone spent their time making this shit.
Don't sort of make you think like what could we make?
I wonder as well.
It hasn't been licensed.
So I wonder if there would be at some point some sort of IP crossover here where the creator
of this could get in trouble.
Because the only way that you can get AI to do anything is you've got to train it, right?
So in order for it to create this show, it had to have been trained on the actual Love
Island on the show.
So then who owns the concept idea?
Who owns the IP of that?
If you've had to use something to train the algorithm to create something else, who is
paid for that when this is clearly making so much money?
I just thought about the guy who does the voiceover and the fact that he won't have
a job in stupid, sexy Fruit Love Island.
I actually think there will be a lawsuit for sure, or maybe Love Island, because it is
their intellectual property.
Maybe then we could get a documentary and the guy who does the voiceover of Love Island
could voice the documentary and it could be very meta about Fruit Love Island.
And so while the pineapple and the banana are banging up and down under a blanket,
it can be like, well, things got hot and steamy here.
Fruit salad.
Sorry, you could not have sex with a pineapple.
It's too spiky.
If you guys listened to the episode we did a few weeks ago,
we did an episode around looks maxing,
which is this idea that young men's whole value depends
on the way that they look.
And it's about how to maximize your appearance.
That's what looks maxing means.
Now, there is a guy that is leading the way.
His name is Clavicula.
He's making absolute bank online by teaching young men,
not just young men, older men too, how to be bigger and be better
and be leaner.
Chisel your jaw, bro.
chisel your jaw with like hammering the jaw blah blah blah anyway we don't want to talk about that
because we've done that part yes but it's i mean go and listen to that episode we'll link it in
the show notes it's deeply problematic and it's like a just a gross what once upon a time was
quite a niche part of of the internet and now it's kind of become quite mainstream and i feel
like it's a little bit more than just talking about like aesthetics he has when i say like a
range of every drug that he takes every single day it's probably about 12 things it's like
testosterone he says he takes methamphetamine for chiseled jaw he has accutane he has like like so
many prescription medications the guy's problematic he's also 20 and shouldn't be he shouldn't be
being the Dalai Lama for anyone put it that way but he is making a lot of money like he has a
hugely influential following and the reason I say like oh we don't want to get too much into that
because I feel like it is everywhere and it's what everyone in my world podcasting online reels
Everything I'm being served has been around looks maxing and this kid.
And that's why I don't want to go too much into that.
But I do want to talk about him because he's been arrested in Florida, in Fort Lauderdale,
for being on a boat in the Everglades and shooting an alligator.
On live stream.
He's live streaming.
He's with his friends.
He shoots an alligator.
It's horrific.
So he's been arrested for battery because of that incident.
But the funny thing to come out of this is this person who is making absolute bank around
his physique, how he's created himself to be the perfect man, how he is tall, he is chiseled,
he is built, he is lean. His mugshot from being arrested has been released because in Florida,
they just publicly release all your information on your arrests. So his mugshot's gone viral with
the information because he's always said that he is six foot two. His mugshot says that he's five
foot 11. So for all this time, he's just been lying to his audience saying that he's like this
really tall jacked person and you have to be over six foot and he's not he's 5 11. Did he even go as
far as saying that he wanted to get leg lengthening surgery to take him from like 6 2 to 6 4 or 6 5
or something like that? Well no wonder he wanted leg lengthening surgery he's been living a lie
it's like when you um it's I mean everyone's experience at some point it's like when you
you go on a date and I know that we shouldn't be shortest or heightest or whatever but it's like
they've written six foot unnecessarily and you get there and you're like you're absolutely not
six foot because I'm five nine and I'm taller than you and I'm wearing flats like you are not
who are you lying to it is a weird thing though to get so hung up on and I think the reason why this
is so funny is because this would be such a mortal wound to him and like he's built this
branding around himself where he is like the best of the best elitism like and it all comes down to
this overall aesthetic that he's created even his name like clavicula his real name is Brayden
Peters, which is the most boring white bread name I've ever heard. Just Braden Peters. And he was
done for assault and he's 5'11 and he's just a white male. When you read it all like written out,
there's nothing about the version of what has been recorded in this police report that makes
him seem special. He is the most white bread, run of the mill guy. And unfortunately, he is
so deeply problematic and has been profiting off people's insecurities for so long. But it kind of
like there's something really humbling about reading this I think could you imagine how
embarrassed he would have been when that got released he's like you did me dirty man I'm
six foot I didn't even have shoes on he's like I didn't have my shoes on I know he's only sort of
just shot to fame but I wonder if this is his unraveling as well because it's coming out that
he has been arrested for other things in the past he actually hit a fan in his car like he ran over
a fan I don't think it was intentional but it was he was live streaming that as well so like
in the space of a year he's live streamed hitting a fan and killing an animal like this is
pretty horrific i think that this is the problem though right like every part of his life is being
live streamed his entire life is content there's this interview that he did recently we'll play a
little bit for you but it's his perspective on dating and it's like nothing that he does is for
human connection nothing that he does is just to live in the here and now everything is how you can
get the most out of the content of your life what do i get from it yeah have a listen to this i don't
like when people put too much focus on like getting girls as the reason that they look max
because uh chasing tail is really not going to get you anywhere like you could become the most
successful uh slayer and have the best game ever uh sleep with a different girl every night but
your life will really not change and in a lot of regards like it'll get worse like uh and that sort
of is what something i experience is like it's a mega waste of time just talking to girls going
out on dates and stuff like that yeah yeah i mean i do content so it's like say you were to do like
a bowling date with a girl and you weren't streaming it like that's just the most ridiculous
what about like connecting with her because like you like her or something like that you know like
maybe you want to start a family where's the roi in that what's that like where's the roi
sorry what's roi return on investment it's sad isn't it if you're that girl that's going on
that date knowing that if you're not going to bring him views and clicks then what's the point
of the date like you're worthless to him it's also sad i mean i know it's more problematic than it is
sad i know we've established that but like this is a 20 year old man by all accounts a kid boy who
has grown up thinking that his value is cemented in only what other people think of him like his
absolute you know i know we talk about as though it looks maxing and we talk about it as though
aesthetics. His perception of himself is that he has no value unless other people think he is
objectively good looking or unless other people are interested in his life. Like he must have
zero actual self-esteem because everything that he has built is based around what other people think
of where he is at. It's also interesting. There's been some information that's come out that I feel
like if somebody did a deep dive into his life might explain a lot, but his mother was a body
builder for a period of time. I don't know how long, but when you were competing in bodybuilding,
it is extreme. I dated a bodybuilder for a little while and it was horrible. All they think about
all day is the way they look. Macros. What they're putting into their body. Do they look fat? Are
they dehydrated? Do I have to drink less water to make my skin tight? Like it becomes this all
consuming world. And I wonder if you're a young boy and you're growing up and I'm not at all
blaming the mom I'm not but I do wonder if like that is all you grew up with I wonder if he has
other influential men in his life or if he's just realized that your be all and end all all day is
on the way you look because bodybuilding is you only win if you look the part like you only win
the money and the accolades and the respect if you've got zero body fat and you are jacked well
I think as well with bodybuilding and like I'm obviously not a bodybuilder I'm sure that comes
was a shock to everyone. I've never done it. I've never done it, but I'm sure we have listeners who
have competed as bodybuilders. So I'm sure like you guys, if you have, you would have a much
better understanding of this. Like my understanding of it. And I say this from someone who's only,
I only know one friend who's ever competed as a bodybuilder and it was for a short period of time,
but it becomes not just about that one competition. It becomes about everything in your life has to
be overhauled. It's a lifestyle as much as it is also a competition. Like it is everything that you
do in your day is culminating to like stripping your body as much of the fat as possible to get
within a certain like specific weight range. And then you kind of like have your off season and
then you do it all again for the on season. Like there's such a specific nature to it that it is
all consuming. I can only assume that it would have some impact on a kid and on seeing like
different dietries and dieting as being like a normal part of the culture. I think that the
the other side of that coin though is that you see someone who has incredible willpower who is
like really dedicated to something and they've got conviction for what they want to do like
there are really positive sides to it as well and i i just want to be careful conflating that if you
grow up with someone who does something like that or if you are someone who does something like that
like that and shooting a fucking alligator are worlds apart obviously they're not related but
and and we're not saying that if you had a parent that was a bodybuilder that you're going to grow
up like that. But I do think you have to realize that there could be a tie there. Like if you've
grown up as a kid and everything is about what you're eating, how much you're eating, how you
look, you've got to look the best, you've got to be the leanest. I'm sure that has an effect on you
in some capacity. And it's not even just that, like the, I think of the guy that I dated, but
I was actually reading about a girl on the Gold Coast who was a bodybuilder yesterday. Her reel
just popped up. I must've been doing some research and she's only like 25 and she went into a
bodybuilding competition a year ago. And she was talking about, she just wanted to see what her
what he could do and once she did it she was done but she was talking about how hard it is to go
back to normal after you've done that and how you develop different eating disorders and issues
around eating in different capacities so it's not necessarily the same thing but when that's all you
have thought about for so long it's really she's like I'm finding it really hard to go back to a
normal life interesting yeah it's all very interesting I mean yeah look I think it's
important to say because like I said we're going to have people who are bodybuilders who are going
listen to this that's not one size fits all literally i'm sure a lot of people have different
outcomes but it is an interesting part of this to unpack the only other thing that i think is
interesting about this whole like clavicular situation is this is once again just a reminder
that anyone can start a channel you can be 20 years old with zero fucking qualifications
never read a book and you can start a channel and you can amass a following and we kind of did it
and we started a podcast and we had no idea what we were doing.
But you're all here and we love you.
We're glad you're still here.
But you do really have to pick and choose the people
and the qualifications that you align yourselves with.
And unfortunately for like a lot of these young guys and young men,
they see this kid, they think he's cool, he's live streaming everything.
The boy needs therapy, not a fucking YouTube channel.
That's what he needs.
He needs therapy.
And also just don't believe everything.
He's not 6'2".
He's 5'8".
He's 5'11".
And he has his leg lengthening.
Something that I have been utterly obsessed with this week,
has to do with The Lion King.
Now, there is a legal court battle that is going down
between the Grammy-winning South African composer,
his name is Lebohang Meraki, and African-American comedian
named Janassi.
They're fighting it out.
They're fighting it out.
$27 million fighting it out.
Now, this is all because of, you know the song The Circle of Life?
You know that really, like, incredible, pivotal part
of the movie of The Lion King?
I think most people do.
I wonder if, Lockie, we've got a young kid in here.
Do you know that song Circle of Life?
everyone knows that when
when Mufasa gets baby Simba
I'm too scared to say the lyrics
because they're not going to get them right
it's not copyrighted because it's not right
so Mufasa gets Simba and holds him up
in the air and all of the animals are singing
and no one really
knew what they meant we all thought circle of life
but you know understanding the terminology
of what actually was being said then has
kind of been a little bit of a mystery for quite some
time I don't think anyone don't take this the wrong
away to the composer.
I don't think anyone cared what it meant.
It was just a pivotal moment that you take that song to that moment
of the movie, but I don't think, I mean, evidently no one cared
because no one ever bothered to look it up.
We all just say it.
Well, there is an African comedian who's gone very viral
over the last couple of weeks because he has translated
those lyrics for us.
Have a listen to this.
You were way off.
All right.
What does it mean?
It means, look, there's a lion.
Oh, my God.
You're joking.
That is not what that means.
That is not what that means.
That's exactly what it means.
It means, look, there's a lion.
Oh, my God.
Look, there's a lion.
Oh, my God.
It's a lion.
It's a lion.
it turns out that we all got duped so the lyrics themselves look there's a lion oh my god is
actually not what it said at all and he's purposefully mistranslated the actual lyrics
of the song the lyrics of the song are all hail the king we all bow in the presence of the king
i shared this reel to so many people and so many people shared this reel to me because
hey look there's a lion oh my god it's funny not because it's comedy it's funny because you're
sending it to people not because it's a joke you're sending it to people because you're like
lol that we never knew this like that's you know it's a part of our childhood and so the way that
he sits there and delivers it it doesn't look like it's a part of a stand-up comedy it's like
it looks like he's like just made this discovery he's like I need to tell the world and that's what
he's done and that is why there's such a huge problem with it because the world myself included
has started to spread this misinformation.
Now, Lebo M, who is the composer, has been very upset
by this mistranslating.
Did you just call him Lebo M?
Lebo M is the abbreviated name.
I didn't make that up, okay?
I just thought you added a name.
That's what he goes by.
Lebo M was very upset.
Sorry, I was just going to culturally stop you for a second.
Thank you.
But it's his actual nickname.
It's his nickname and I'm too scared to say his name again
for a second time because I was very lucky getting it right
the first time, okay?
so he he's come out very upset by the purposeful mistranslating he feels as though that it has
done a disjustice to the art that he has created and he is suing janassi for 27 million dollars
20 million dollars for damages and 7 million for punitive damages i think it's gone a bit far do
we think we've taken it too far who comes up with these numbers where do you pull 27 million dollars
usually like a defamation in that sort of sense which i guess it's kind of it leans into i guess
some sort of defamatory representation of the song usually it has to do with monetary loss I
think it's different in the states to what it is in Australia like if you're holding someone for
defamation in the states you have to prove that you've lost income because of the things that
the person said this to me just feels like that they have been almost morally offended and look
there's one part of this which I do think is interesting so Lebo M who is the composer he's
come out and said that it is a like it's a mockery of African culture and that's the reason why he's
taking a stance I think that that would have more weight if the person who was doing the mockery and
making the joke as a comedian wasn't also African so I kind of feel like if it's happening from
within your own culture it kind of takes the heat out of a little bit it would be very different if
it was somebody like Ricky Gervais making fun of it do you know what I mean I don't know I just
think it sets a precedent for like nobody can say anything anymore like if this guy can't go on the
internet and say even though it was a joke in hindsight if he can't go onto the internet and
say do you know this really means look there's a lion because he's going to get sued 27 million
dollars no one's going to be able to do anything well it makes you kind of question the whole like
what is off limits when it comes to a joke i would have thought that the lion king wasn't off limits
i would have thought that it was fair game i kind of get why le bohang is upset i understand that
he's like i created a cultural icon in the last two weeks the internet has absolutely gutted it
dry dude it would have gotten so many more downloads now but like I believed it I believed
and I was like oh my god that whole time it just meant look there's a lion oh my god you know I
think that when you walk the line of comedy I know that the laws are different between here and
and the states but it has to be quite clear that it's a parody that it's a joke I didn't think it
was a joke at all I genuinely fell for this and now knowing that I'm like that's even funnier that
you completely got the entire internet to get in on this and think that it was a fact but i guess
the thing is now is even just raising it as a lawsuit doesn't the internet now know it's a joke
like isn't that enough the fact that like it's maybe that's why he made the 27 million ridiculous
claims so it would get headlines maybe and like it's rewritten itself i mean is it a good joke
no does it do actual damage i mean i think it does if you take your art form very seriously
He's obviously a very serious, award-winning composer who feels very strongly about the
artwork form of the work that he creates and puts out in the world and has been personally
hurt by the fact that it's turned into what he considers a mockery.
I just think it's an interesting one to put a value on where you're like, well, because
of that joke that didn't land or wasn't executed well, I am deserving of $27 million.
It's an incomprehensible amount.
and also you know for a stand-up comedian he's like i don't have that so i do think it's probably
more a statement than what it is actually trying to get blood out of a stone but i don't know i
kind of i hate the thing that like you can't joke about it anymore like now here's another thing
like you can't make a joke about that it's like i get it when it's about people i get it when it
is about culture but this is also a cartoon ultimately i think it would also hit different
for me if the comedian came out and translated
to something really offensive and derogatory.
And I understand that the composer felt that it was offensive
because it wasn't true to what the story that he was trying
to tell is.
But I think if he came out and said, like,
kill that big, ugly lion.
We hate them, whatever it is.
But, like, there's nothing derogatory about it.
He just said, look, there's a lion over there.
Like, to be sued for $27 million for that is absolutely insane for me.
I just think it's setting a precedence that, especially in somewhere like America, it's
worrying because you have freedom of speech, right?
You're supposed to be able to say whatever you want.
And all of a sudden he's made a joke about this and he's going to be sued for something
that he's never even going to be able to pay.
He had to, he's had to set up a GoFundMe that's made about $16,000 so far at the time of this
recording to pay some legal fees.
Like the guy can't pay $27 million.
Guys, I think that we're all getting into the details of, oh, there's a lion, but has
anyone investigated Hakuna Matata?
I must know.
What does it actually mean, no worries?
For the rest of your days.
I think it would.
That's too, like, it literally, the song is, it means.
I'm looking it up.
What does Hakuna Matata actually mean in English?
I was going to say.
It means no worries.
It's a Swahili phrase that means there are no worries
or there are no problems.
Or is it?
Oh, look, there's a wild boar.
There's a farting boar.
Do not sue me.
We are not making jokes.
This is not a parody.
Allegedly.
no but look I I don't know I I think it's an interesting one to unpack when it's like
what is and isn't off limits when it when a joke is being made and also are you responsible if the
joke doesn't land because like who are we to say oh it didn't appear like it was a joke I mean he's
a comedian I'm not he meant it as a joke like just because we didn't get it like are we the ones who
are below but Jonassie has come out and he's said that comedy always has a way of starting a
conversation. I like that. I just
don't like that he's going to end up in court.
He's still got a few money left. Hakuna Matata.
He definitely doesn't
have a beard in Matata.
It means no worries
for the rest of your days.
He should walk in singing that.
It's a problem free
philosophy
Hakuna Matata.
