Life Uncut - Public Break Up Announcements - Closure, Clarity or Clout?

Episode Date: July 22, 2024

Hey Lifers, First up, have you seen Avatar or Brokeback mountain? They're life changing apparently! We had a group dinner with some podcast friends that didn't end with Biden stepping back from being a... presidential candidate but did end with a huge penis. Laura has called for a welfare check on someone and created an enemy in the process! We are seeing an increase in people publicly sharing their breakups on social media, something that previously was almost exclusively done by celebrities. Over the past week we saw two opposite types of break up posts. One was from the Princess of Dubai, Sheikha Mahra & the other was a joint statement from Maya Jama and Stormzy. But why are people sharing this kind of content online? Is it for closure? Is it for clarity? Is it for clout? Starting point is 00:00:00 Life Uncut acknowledges the traditional custodians of country whose lands were never ceded. We pay our respects to their elders past and present. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land. This episode was recorded on Cammeraygal land. Hi guys and welcome back to another episode of Life Uncut. I'm Laura. I'm Brittany. What are you giggling about over there? No, you know exactly what I'm giggling about. You're giving off some cowgirl vibes today. Am I?
Starting point is 00:00:33 Well, it's because I'm wearing cowgirl boots. And it's the black jumper, woolen jumper with like the white trim. Thank you. It's screaming, wants to be on a ranch. Ranchy. It's screaming, wish you weren't in a podcast studio and you're on a ranch somewhere. I can handle being on a ranch on a Monday morning.
Starting point is 00:00:50 You, if we're just going to like commentate on each other's clothes. We do not have to do that. You look great, but you also look like you're about to sell me an apartment. Yep. In Double Bay. Yes, I have an announcement. I am now on Lux Listings. I am the new host of Lux Listings.
Starting point is 00:01:06 Oh, my God. All right. Well, look, there's a lot to talk about. I've just realized. Is there a movie in your life like that? Well, sorry, not in your life. Is there a movie that you know is like a life-changing movie? It's instrumental in shaping people's lives or in their youth or growing up?
Starting point is 00:01:21 Something that is like every single person should have seen. Is there one of those movies that you haven't seen? Oh, yeah. Avatar. Is that instrumental in shaping our lives? It's one of those movies that everybody has seen and I'm the only person who hasn't seen Avatar. Yeah, I'm talking more like, you know,
Starting point is 00:01:41 A Breakfast at Tiffany's or something like. Anchorman, I haven't seen it. That's another one that everyone always quotes. Do you know why that's instrumental? Because everyone quotes it. And I remember being at a bar this one day, as in like I was working behind the bar. Was that Baxter?
Starting point is 00:01:56 No. Buck twice if you're in Milwaukee. You ate a whole wheel of cheese? I'm not even mad. I'm impressed. I have no idea what you're saying right now. You need to watch it. You sound like you're having a stroke.
Starting point is 00:02:06 So I was working behind a bar in Wollongong and at the time, I mean if you're into football or you're from Wollongong, you would know this. St George is the football team from Wollongong and all the footballers used to come into the glass house when I was working in the bar. Like that was a big nightclub of Wollongong at the time. And Mark Gazzania, who I had no idea who he was because I didn't follow football at all I don't know and he came to the bar and he ordered a drink yeah
Starting point is 00:02:30 like you're like I don't know people who like football might know okay and people who don't like football will feel the way I feel so he comes to the bar orders a drink and he made some like he I don't know if he was flirting with me or if he was just trying to be friendly but anyway I I kind of shut him down and then he turned around and said I'm kind of a big deal around here or something to that extent is that the quote but anyway it's a quote from anchor man and i didn't know and i took it super seriously and we were on yeah anyway i don't know if you know i'm kind of a big deal that's what he said okay i want to give you your homework which is to watch anchor man thank you but the reason that i even got to where we are right now is because i
Starting point is 00:03:11 realized as i said you belong on a ranch as with a cowboy i realized i have never seen brokeback mountain that's not going to change your life for it is it not no but it was wasn't it really life-changing the first film that really showed a homosexual relationship a gay couple or with two people that had never been perceived to be gay like these cowboys that it wasn't accepted wasn't that pretty socially yeah I mean it was amazing of its time I think there's been many more since then I don't think your life was the first I don't think your life will be changed to buy it okay and command but yeah i'm gonna watch it have you seen it i have seen it several times very good several times yeah we're back for more oh flip me over it was life-changing
Starting point is 00:03:53 although i do want to just kind of point out that so this morning we all woke up to the news we're recording this monday morning we all woke up to the news that joe biden has just pulled out of the presidential election. Which we sort of saw coming. We did. We did see it coming, but somehow broke that mountain. Trumped the level of importance of things to talk about. Trumped. Funny. Trumped. Yeah, you're welcome for that pun. But look, I mean, everyone is going to have their opinions about it. I think a lot of people feel like it was a long time coming. But on Friday, Matt sent an article, which was the headline was Biden pulls out of the election. And it looked as So, you know, when you get sent a message and it's a website link,
Starting point is 00:04:35 it looks as though, you know, you can kind of see in the bit link at the bottom which article, like where it's come from. So if it's from The Guardian, you can kind of tell that it's from The Guardian or vice versa for whatever other website it could be from. So he sends this link around and it says Joe Biden has pulled out. Mind you, this is also on Friday, so it's actually before it's happened. But could still be real.
Starting point is 00:04:57 Oh, my God, it was so believable. When you clicked it, however, it did not come from The Guardian. It was a picture of a massive black penis. A very mature man. That's what he sent me. But the problem is, is I didn't click the link and I did what you should never do. I only read the headline. And then I went out for dinner that night with you guys and also with the team from
Starting point is 00:05:18 Mamma Mia. And I was like, hey, what about Joe Biden pulling out of the presidential election? And everyone looked at me like I was a fucking idiot. We were like, no, no, that hasn't happened. You were like, yes, it has. I read it today. I was like, look at this link. Mia Friedman was like, no, no, that hasn't happened yet.
Starting point is 00:05:36 But what was funny was it was a social dinner, but the whole team, as soon as Laura said it, I've never seen them act so fast because they report the news. They were all on their phones being like, search it, search it, and I could just see Mia's brain working overtime. Get the link. Actually, we got so many messages about that too. So many people were like, what is this?
Starting point is 00:05:52 What's going on? Like I didn't know that you guys were, you know, is this what the crossover that we didn't know we needed? We're friends with the team. We had a beautiful social dinner. They're incredible. But I had a lot of people thinking there were like some conspiracy theories going on. I think that's the thing that's so nice about the world of podcasting. And like, I mean, firstly, let's just wrap up the Joe Biden thing. Oh yeah. What I was trying to establish is that there's a reason why you guys don't come to us for politics. And it's because, I mean, I would like to say that I do read more than the headline normally,
Starting point is 00:06:23 but in that instance I did just read a headline and then I looked like an ass no but the thing that I think is so amazing about podcasting is that so many of us are friends like even though we compete with each other it's all such friendly competition in terms of mamma mia and also like shameless like we all are so supportive of each other and I think that that is one of the things that I am the most proud of around the podcasting industry is how much so many of these female-led podcasts lift each other up and support each other I think a lot of people would be shocked to know that like Shameless, Mamma Mia and Life Uncut are in a group chat. Like a WhatsApp group chat. We talk, we congratulate, some of the shit we send each other, we congratulate each other
Starting point is 00:07:02 when the time comes or it needs to be, or we reach out to each other to see if we're all doing okay. If something negative has happened, like it's a really beautiful little, sometimes very funny group chat. And it's amazing. The other thing is, is when you work in an industry like podcasting, or even when you run your own business, often you work in a silo. So you don't have the opportunity of bouncing things off each other like so many other people get to in different industries it's a very very cool thing that mama mia shameless and ourselves are able to do that every time they have a win or they have a success everybody rallies around each other and is so happy for the other person you know anytime that shameless has smashed it in the podcast charts
Starting point is 00:07:41 the group chat is always like oh my god like so good congratulations as much as i say compete for downloads. Yeah, but then we'll also be like, go on holiday now, fuck you on holiday. Like it's very friendly. No, but it's great. It really is. But anyway, I don't know how we got here, but here we are. Well, it's just I think, yeah, I don't know how we got here either.
Starting point is 00:07:58 Sorry, we went to Brokeback Mountain and we got here. And Joe Biden and then the WhatsApp group chat. No, but it's I guess what the way to wrap this chat is what we want to say is there's so much room for more than one woman or one team of women in any industry. like there is enough of the pie to go around and it'd be nice to create an environment or continue creating an environment where people know that. Yeah. And I think it's, that's probably why it's so important to talk about it because often, especially in media, they love to pit women against each other. They love to make out that any industry that's predominantly women is a
Starting point is 00:08:33 caddy industry where people are not supportive of each other. And in our experience, it has been nothing but the case that people have been so supportive. The most unsupportive people are the media. Yeah. Anyway, look, I wanted to tell you guys something that happened to me on the weekend because I feel like I'm not in the wrong here. You sent a big black dick around. You're in the wrong. Yeah, that was wrong. But no, like something else that happened. It has to do with my neighbor. So I live next door to two very elderly women. Both my neighbors are super elderly. One of them I see very rarely. Like she stays in her house most of the time. I know that she had been really unwell a couple of months back. And when I did last see her, she told us that basically the
Starting point is 00:09:15 people at the hospital wanted her to go into assisted living. She refused to go into assisted living. So she's still living independently, but she's pretty much just on her own next door. So we try and keep an eye out for her and do our best to make sure that she's okay. Look for signs of life. And I know that sounds grim, but it's kind of the truth. Is this the same neighbor that complained about you having your bathroom light on? No, that's another neighbor. That's the other side. We live in a duplex. So this is a neighbor that we share a wall with. Okay. We know that she's okay because we can hear her TV. She blasts it. And we have thin walls. She always says to me like, oh, you know, I can hear everything that your children are doing next door. So on Friday
Starting point is 00:09:54 night, I get home from work at like 5pm and I noticed that her groceries are on the doorstep, which is so unusual for her because you've got to think when you're elderly and you don't leave your house very often, getting a grocery delivery is a big deal. Like, you know that your groceries are coming. It's not something that you can just forget about because you've been out and you've been busy. So I go home five o'clock, groceries are there. And I mentioned it to Matt and he's like, yeah, they've been there all day. And I was like, oh, that makes me feel weird. Eight o'clock stuck my head out. Groceries were still there. So, you know, I banged on the door. She didn't answer the door. And I was like, oh, I feel really uncomfortable by this. Yeah. You know,
Starting point is 00:10:30 she doesn't just pop out all the time no yeah 10 o'clock groceries still at the door well yeah fair i think if they're there at 10 they're probably gonna stay the night i think yeah these groceries are settled in and it's like a full like i'm talking like a full shop of groceries not like one little bag from uber eats i'm talking this is like her week's worth of groceries so i try i try like matt and i had been intimately knocking for like over that hour so she hadn't answered the door and i was like i feel like she would be inside like where is she going to go she's not left she's not gone anywhere none of the lights are on though so it means that she's either completely not home which would be weird to get her groceries and not be home or
Starting point is 00:11:06 she's very unwell so anyway had a fall or something yeah I've never been in a situation where I had to call for like a welfare check before so I didn't know what the process was to call for a welfare check I called emergency and I was like I'm so sorry if this is not an emergency but I think my neighbor might be inside her house I really don't know the process of calling for a welfare check. They were so good. And I think you often hear negative feedback about police. Very rarely do people say, oh my God, the police were actually exceptional. So the guy had me on the phone. Whilst I was still on the phone, I could hear the sirens coming. That's how quickly they arrived within two minutes. I must have been doing a Bondi drug bust. It was a quiet day in
Starting point is 00:11:47 Bondi. So two minutes, they were there, they were on our street and they were like, don't worry, we'll take care of it. I thought that would be the last that I would hear of it unless there was some terrible news, right? So a half an hour later, I stick my head out. Oh, there is not one cop car. There is five cop cars. Like this street is fully packed with cop cars. There is also a police rescue van that has now arrived on the street. You know, the big massive police rescue that's got it printed on the side, like the massive like truck things. Imagine if she was like the head of the drug ring in Bondi. It was like all happening in her house. Iris is there. That's like the biggest bust of the year. Our street was like blocked off by this police
Starting point is 00:12:24 rescue squad that had come anyway we get a knock on the door by then it's like 11 o'clock so a bit more time's passed and he's like you know we can't get inside we've been knocking for over an hour to try and get inside we're also very concerned now they go to the back to start picking the lock they can't pick the lock so then they start to kick the door down and at that point we're all like fuck man this is grim i just picture that you know how they have those big heavy metal black things that they use to knock it down. That's what they do. They fucking like whack you in this door.
Starting point is 00:12:54 So they've got a team of like 10 people. I don't even know. It's a good outcome, but then you hear this, what's going on? Oh, my God. So Iris was asleep and I didn't know that Iris is also deaf and that's why she has a TV. Iris is having a nap TV on somewhere. Imagine waking up from your nap.
Starting point is 00:13:20 Imagine fucking being so cooked from the week, you wake up from your nap and there's 25 policemen in your lounge room. Iris was just asleep. She'd gone to bed early and she also didn't. What, 4 o'clock? She also didn't know. What's early? 1 o'clock?
Starting point is 00:13:36 She didn't know that the groceries were being delivered that day. She thought it was the wrong day. Anyway, the whole entire fucking police force of Bondi were there and I felt so stupid, but now she is so mad at us. So I saw her on the weekend and I was like, hi, Iris, and she fucking flipped me off. She's like, I was in REM. Do you know how hard it is to get in?
Starting point is 00:14:01 Fuck you. I'm so embarrassed. No, we're laughing. It's the right thing to do, absolutely. I don't know if it is. 100% it is. Ask Iris. She doesn't agree.
Starting point is 00:14:14 Iris, we'll have another nap tomorrow. It doesn't sound like she's got much going on. What? No one pays. Oh, I don't know who. Whoa, I didn't even think of that. Who pays for the door? You, Laura.
Starting point is 00:14:25 It's on you. I need to go and pay for her door. Yeah. No wonder she's mad at me. Yeah. I'm happy to pay for a door. Poor Iris. You're going to have to pay for a door.
Starting point is 00:14:32 No, I think this is the right thing to do. And I say that because, like, this has happened to my nana, my grandma before. She's had a fall at home. And if no one checked on her, that would have been her done. like if they have a fall and they break your hip you can't get help you absolutely did the right thing so don't don't I think the moral of the story is that the police were really really good and they were super thorough and effective I think also it's the realization that you're at an age
Starting point is 00:15:00 where your neighbor thinks if you don't answer the door you're dead I think that that's what she's pissed about she's like I was having a nap and you guys really took that too far over the last week we have seen numerous very public breakups happening online the reason we're seeing them online is because the people themselves that are doing the breaking up are posting them well this is a conversation we've been having for a couple of weeks and then i think it's very interesting that in the last sort of five six days there's been two very different events that have happened as in breakups that have happened that have been posted across either Instagram or TikTok. I think we have been seeing increasingly this trend
Starting point is 00:15:43 of people using social media, not just to talk about their breakups, which is something that, you know, usually it's something that we exclusively see celebrities do. They talk about, oh, we're consciously uncoupling, which is one that I know everyone is aware of. I think that that has become almost the norm and expectation that people announce their breakups if they're in the public eye. But I do think that there has been a rise in how people are using social media to talk about breakups. Part of that is how people are doing kind of like exposés on cheating on TikTok specifically. So creating content around the fact that they've been cheated on or the terrible behavior of their ex-boyfriends. This is something that, you know, 10 years ago or
Starting point is 00:16:26 even five years ago was information that we would have deemed to be something that you should keep private. Like it was an overshare, but now we're kind of forging. Yeah. We're forging ahead into this space where women in particular are using social media as a way to call out horrific behavior that they've experienced. But it definitely is a bit of a shift in how people are approaching their breakups when it comes to social media. I think what has happened and what we're about to speak about, like what has happened around the world in the last week is something that has never happened before or something we've never seen in this capacity before. So the princess of Dubai, her name is Sheikha Mara bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. From here on in,
Starting point is 00:17:10 we are just going to refer to her as Sheikha Mara. She's 30 years old. She is a Dubai princess. She's the daughter of the prime minister and vice president of the UAE. She's one of 26 children, so she has a lot of siblings, but that is to six different wives. So the prime minister has six wives, 23 grandkids. This is a huge family. Now this is one of the wealthiest families in the world, the most wealthy and the most powerful families in the world. She's also somebody who stands for strong advocacy for women, which is a very, and I can only assume a very, very challenging thing to do when you are from this family, because by all reports, her father, as powerful as he is, is also someone who is deeply problematic. Well, it's interesting. She
Starting point is 00:17:52 went to the UK to study international relations. She's a very loud voice for women's rights in a world where it is scary to be an advocate for women's rights. There are a lot of things that have gone down in the background of that family. And we are not going to get into a deep dive on those, but I think they all have to do with why she has made this very public statement of separation. So let's talk about the separation post. She posted one frame on Instagram, like on the grid that said, dear husband, as you are occupied with other companions, I hereby declare our divorce. I divorce you, I divorce you, and I divorce you. When I first saw her, I was like, funny, she's really doubling down on the divorce because I had never heard of something called
Starting point is 00:18:31 triple talak. So if you are not aware with what triple talak is, it is a, I would say controversial because it has been banned in many places, but it's a controversial Islamic practice that allows the husband to divorce his wife by saying, I divorce you three times. The reason why this is so powerful is it is not a process that is employed by women or able to be used by women. Unless it's like, it's almost like a prenups. In some conditions, women can include a clause in their marriage contracts that basically allows them to utilize this triple taluk to instigate a divorce. However, without that clause, women do not have the same right to pronounce taluk as men. So in very rare cases, would we see women do it? And I do wonder if being
Starting point is 00:19:12 from the royal family and such a powerful family maybe it was written into her contract but even so even if triple talak was written into her marital contract i mean i want to be really careful with this because this is not a culture that i am deeply familiar with so i think we are trying to tread careful ground we don't want to give any information that's incorrect but even if it was in a exceptional case that a woman had the ability to call in triple talak and say, I divorce you over multiple occasions to be able to initiate divorce with her husband. I do not think that that would be via a public social media post because the humiliation that is ingrained in that, it is a statement. It is her saying to her husband, I will not put up with
Starting point is 00:19:58 this behavior and I will make it known that you are somebody who is beneath me in this moment. And that's what that statement does. And I think it's so interesting because we see the way that people use social media to get retribution, I think, for cheating or get retribution for their relationships not turning out the way that they expected them to. And in this instance, I think it's been not only is it her making a statement, but it's a relationship statement, but it's also a huge political statement as well, which is so powerful. The other statement that she made here, and just to give you the timeline. So in March, 2023, they got engaged. In May, so just two months later, they got married. That went into June. And then in May, one year later, they had their
Starting point is 00:20:39 first daughter. So that's not that long ago. So May this year, she had put up a photo that said just the three of us. And now when she's split, she's wiped him. Not only she made this divorce statement, but she wiped him from Instagram, which we see all too often. And she posted a photo of just her and her newborn baby and said just the two of us. So really doubling down on that statement of you're out of my life completely. But it's a really brave thing that she's done and it shouldn't be brave. But in the world that she lives in, it is. To take that power back and try and have some semblance of control in a world that she probably doesn't usually have that much controlling, I take my hat off to her. Yeah. And there's a lot of articles that
Starting point is 00:21:18 are circulating at the moment around how empowering it is, what she has done. But also when we were discussing it, we were like, it also is kind of frightening what that could mean for her especially within a family where women don't have the same agency but also aren't able to make public statements that haven't been vetted you know for keeping up appearances and I could only assume that there is many rules and regulations that a royal would need to abide by and the big question is is has she or will she put herself in any danger by making this powerful stance yeah and the other thing here is to think about is her husband who she's divorcing isn't just a regular Joe blow either. Like he's also part of a royal family, which I'm assuming comes
Starting point is 00:21:59 with just as much control. And I can't imagine the embarrassment that that family is probably feeling right now. So as much as the world is celebrating her and being like, yes, you take your agency, take your power. It's a scary thought too about what repercussions could happen. In complete contrast to this, on the very same day, there was another public breakup that happened across social media. And that was that of Maya Jama and Stormzy. Now, if you don't know who they are. He is a British rapper and she is the host of Love Island UK. And I would say that globally people have loved their relationship and absolutely ship them as a couple. They've been on and off for the past five years, but for the past year, well, almost a year, they have seemed very solid and
Starting point is 00:22:41 they give real mom and dad goals. Now, I think it's so interesting, this idea of using social media as a way of announcing a breakup, because we know there is so much social pressure on people who are in the public eye to confirm or deny whether they are going through a breakup. And it almost, I think to some people, on one hand, you have Sheikha Mara, who is using it as a statement and as a way of being able to claim back power in a position that seems completely powerless. But on the flip side, you have people like Maya Jama and Stormzy who are using it as a way to mitigate PR.
Starting point is 00:23:15 And I say that because their press statement around their breakup was almost mocking the fact that they had to make a press statement. I just want to read you the start of this because I think that when it comes to people like uncoupling online, if you're ever going to take a leaf out of someone's book as to how to do it as two people who don't hate each other, who don't have animosity, who have clearly come to the decision together that their relationship isn't working and they're better off as friends, this is definitely the way to do it. They wrote, we've been laughing whilst drafting this because we never ever in a million years thought that we'd be the couple announcing a breakup but for the sake of clarity and more
Starting point is 00:23:52 importantly to allow us the space and grace that's needed for us both to be able to navigate this next bit of our lives with peace we thought it might be best now they go on to talk about how they met how they fell in love but just the fact that they are breaking up but they would love to be able to do that with a bit of grace and kindness from everyone who has shit them so hard for so long look there's a part of me in all honesty that has always also laughed at when people have made these statements. At the exact same time, I totally get it. I understand it. And in a world where we have these parasocial relationships with people, maybe it's just an individual that we've followed for so long. Maybe it's a couple that we've followed their whole journey. I think these
Starting point is 00:24:28 guys are a prime example of it. They have been on and off for a decade, since 2014. That is when they first fell in love. People expect it. They expect some sort of clarification. Well, anyone that's gone along the journey with somebody or a couple for that long, you do feel so invested and involved and I can say that because there are people that I follow where you don't even think about it right you see them it's not like you go on to check up on them every day but you've seen them over the years you know everything about their life you see them have kids you see them get married whatever it is then one day you stop seeing someone you stop seeing the partner I'll be the first person say does my head in I'm like what happened where where have you gone are you
Starting point is 00:25:05 on holiday have you gone to the Bahamas have you broken up and then all of a sudden six months later they pop up being like best thing to happen to me with someone else and I'm like but you didn't explain like i feel like we we're not owed anything we've said that before but i understand why people want an explanation sometimes and i don't want anyone to hear you say that britain be like but you're a hypocrite exactly because you were in this situation when you were dating jordan like people sometimes it's premature and that's the problem right people prematurely want to know what's happening in your relationship when you don't even know what the fuck is happening in your relationship so i think that that is a kind of a different instance so i don't want anyone to
Starting point is 00:25:42 be sitting here going, Hey, hold on. Yeah. But I said it at the time too. I said, I understand it. I said, I understand why people want to know. I just wasn't ready yet. It was the expectation to do it before I was ready. And I think that that's what a lot of couples feel. But I think something else surrounding this is for the couple themselves. When you're going through a breakup, I can only imagine, well, I can't, I don't have to imagine I was in it, but someone of their level, we're talking millions and millions of followers, the number of comments and DMs that they would get every day. Like where's Stormzy? Are you still with Stormzy? What's happening? Like I understand the need to make a blanket statement and say, we're not together anymore. So like everyone
Starting point is 00:26:17 just give us a space. I think it's a nice way of also saying, this is it. I don't want to talk about it anymore. So stop harassing me. So I feel like people are sort of forced into making this statement these days, even if they don't want to. I mean, these are two very, very, very different situations where public breakups have occurred and the sentiment and meaning behind them are completely different as well. So I don't want anyone listening to this to think that we're conflating the two. They are completely fundamentally different and the purpose behind them is fundamentally different. But the thing that I find really interesting about this conversation is that we have for a very long time expected celebrities to make public statements around
Starting point is 00:26:56 breakups. Like we expect that of them, but I think that there's been a rise across the board in people announcing their breakups online and using social media as a way of sharing the fact that, And I don't just mean announcing their breakup because all of a sudden someone's posting more and they're posting thirst traps and they look fucking hot. Like you can usually figure it out when someone in your social network has broken up with someone. But I mean, like there are people now on TikTok, as I said at the very start of this conversation, who are using social media as a way to announce breakups. And I think it's also being used as a way of like holding bad relationships, like people who are toxic or people who have behaved badly as a way of getting retribution,
Starting point is 00:27:32 as a way of get almost getting even. Originally, I used to think that breakup posts were cringe and lame. And then I was thinking about it in preparation for this conversation. And I was like, why is it that we are so quick to do the engagement posts with the ring, the baby announcement? We are so quick to post on social media, any relationship success highlight and share that with our friends and our family. But if we have what is deemed a relationship failure, where a relationship is a breakup why is it that it's cringe if you were to post that to social media and the only thing I can come to as an explanation is that we see it as a failure we see it as something that you should be embarrassed about you should see it as being shameful and so
Starting point is 00:28:14 therefore you should keep that shit to yourself like why do we see those things so negatively and everything else so positively I'm for it now I'm fucking announce your breakup yeah I'm for it A couple of reasons. Maybe you don't want to have to go through your entire phone book and tell everyone that you know, hey, I'm not with so-and-so anymore. Like they're not coming to Christmas anymore. I can sleep on the trundle bed. I don't need a double room. Maybe you don't want to go through every single person and tell them. Maybe you want it to be a one-off set forget. Secondly, if people have been following you for a long time or know you and then known you're in this relationship, now you want to get back out there and find it. I think it's brilliant. Anything you
Starting point is 00:28:47 do, any move you make in any capacity, someone out there is going to judge you. So I think as long as you are happy with what you're doing and what you're saying, me personally, I am not and never will be a public shamer. Now, when I say that, I mean like I have people that have been very unfaithful, that have had double lives, whatever it is, you guys know, but I'm not the person that will take that to a public forum. If you want to do that, I understand it, but each to their own. A really famous one of this is Risa Tisa, the TikTok absolute viral sensation, which was who the fuck did I marry? And this is a woman in the States who basically created a mini series around her cheating infidelity that her partner, her husband did to her. My only thought around
Starting point is 00:29:30 this is I don't hold, like, I don't have any judgment around it. I'm like, if that's what you want to do and it floats your boat, firstly, it's going to get great engagement. People love the drama. But secondly, my question is, is what does that do for you in the future? Because the internet always remembers. And imagine that you then start dating someone new and they go back through your social media account and they see that you've created a mini series around your cheating ex-partner. I don't know if in the long run, it actually is going to benefit the people who are doing it as much as what maybe in that moment, in that moment of wanting some sort of justice, it feels as though it will. Even though we've talked about so many different aspects about
Starting point is 00:30:06 these public breakups, I think there is one common denominator here. And that is the fact that the person that is making the public statement is taking control of the situation and maybe that is for themselves maybe that's for their family maybe it's to stop the rumors like Maya said I'm saying this now because you will see us together because we are friends because we're amicable when you see us together I want you to know we're not romantically together we're friends I don't want the rumors and I don't want the gossip yeah and I think it's a powerful statement of saying like I've said it once so now you can't go and write things about us being back together Like for someone in the public eye, I guess it's taking control of what the media can
Starting point is 00:30:44 then go and spin and sell stories because you've already explained it. You've explained not only what's happening now, but what's happening in the future. Yeah. And in the princess's example, she's taking power back for herself and trying to create and show some sort of control and power over her own life and her own agency. I think you're absolutely right, Britt. I think like regardless of how different every single scenario is for every single breakup, if somebody is putting out a public statement around their breakup no matter what that looks
Starting point is 00:31:12 like at the very bottom of it is somebody who's trying to enact some sort of control over their life in a period where often we feel as though we have no control it's time for accidentally unfiltered this is a pretty innocent one but i i lulled out loud i'm not gonna lie and i love the commitment to this story from this girl i haven't even heard this one yeah i mean i don't read it Okay. I don't want to read it. Go. I'm unprepped. A few years ago, I was house sitting for a friend and I woke up at 2am screaming my head off in absolute agony. In retrospect, the fact that I was house sitting does not matter. Oh, I love that. You also didn't read ahead. No, I just forgot that part. It was an insanely sharp pain in my torso. I called my nurse sister who told me
Starting point is 00:31:57 I absolutely needed to call an ambulance. She's like, look, this is what they're there for. You feel the pain, just give them a call. So with the nurse's blessing, I called the ambulance and dragged my agony ass out into the street so that they could pick me up. I laid on the grass because I couldn't stand up anymore. The pain was insatiable. While laying there, I let out a rather lengthy fart and devastatingly started to feel better. When the ambulance came, I had to pretend I was still in agony because I felt so bad for calling them. They still gave me the green whistle but there's no way I need an ambo for what I was feeling long story short they did find some polyps on my gallbladder but they were basically nothing I definitely called an ambulance for wind
Starting point is 00:32:38 oh bless I think it's so funny this is not the first person who's ended up in hospital because of a bit of trapped gas this is not the first person but how long were you holding the fart in to get pain to the point of calling an ambulance bless I reckon this happens all the time but the commitment to roll around on the grass and then get the green whistle, be taken to the hospital and be seen by a consultant. She should have just said, you know what? I feel a bit better. Like you don't need to. She's like, I got my gallbladder out and a leg amputated because I just didn't want to tell them. I had to commit to the cause. I love her commitment. I have definitely been in a situation where I've been in so much pain from gas. I thought I was dying.
Starting point is 00:33:20 And then what? Just let one room. Well, no, there's more to it. There's more to it. We i don't talk about it but no i genuinely thought i was gonna die hang on what more no we have to talk about it what more is there i may also have needed to go to the doctors no i had gas i trapped wind but for longer than a day oh so you thought i was dying maybe in the hospital laura did you write this in is this you i had morphine for my trapped gas oh god guys if you have any accidentally unfiltered stories we want to be the first people that you think of when you have an embarrassing story when something horrible happens to you i want you to go britain laura that's what i want absolutely britney what is your suck for the week so my suck and sweet are the same thing
Starting point is 00:34:03 it can't be the same thing no you'll understand why so if you follow me on instagram you would have seen that i was trying out this new hair thing like it's just like a heatless curler it's one of those you can get the pillow ones you just wrap your hair around and go to sleep yeah it's like a long sausage sky wheatley on i'm a celebrity get me out of here she is like the icon of the hair sausage. Yeah, it's a hair sausage. It's a silk hair sausage. Skye's, I think from memory, was like one really long sausage, but I had this one and I literally forgot I had it. I bought this online a year ago, random, put it in the bottom drawer, never tried it. Anyway, I found it when I was cleaning up yesterday and I was like, I'm going to give this a whirl tonight. But mine has
Starting point is 00:34:42 four sausages. So like it's one connection, but four big flaps. You put it in the middle of your head and it just sausages down your head. I didn't watch a tutorial. I didn't know how to do it, but I knew that you just wrapped it up. You figured it out. Yeah. It's not rocket science. So my suck is the fact that it's like you have to sleep in it. So I tried to put it up on a top knot on my head,
Starting point is 00:35:00 but you can still sort of feel it. It's not the most comfortable thing, but I was committed to just seeing what it was like. So you had a terrible night's sleep. That's your suck. Well, I took a sleeping tablet as well. So I slept through, but you still feel it, right? It's not the most uncomfortable.
Starting point is 00:35:13 I'm not going to make it sound way worse than it was. You know it's there, but I still slept. But my sweet is, holy shit balls. It was incredible. I undid it, not sponsored, don't even know the brand. Irrelevant. There's a hundred long sausage things that you can get online from the hair. Like Google it, a hundred brands.
Starting point is 00:35:29 It's a piece of material. But I unraveled it and it was perfect. I just like ran a brush through it for two seconds. You came in looking like Ariel today to work. It was the biggest, most voluminous, is that the right word? Yes, it's perfect. The luminous, bouncy curls I've ever seen. To do my hair today took three minutes.
Starting point is 00:35:51 I just couldn't believe it. Because it does look amazing. Because it's the heat. And now that I've just lightened my hair so much, I've got to be really careful with heat. Otherwise, it'll get really dry. That's my – you know what? I just checked my DMs now.
Starting point is 00:36:04 So many people are asking me about it. So this is why I'm going to say it. I do not know the brand. I'm sorry. But I cannot stress enough how many there are, like thousands of these things online. Maybe you can find one that can also be your vibe. Do it every day this week.
Starting point is 00:36:17 That's my vibe. I'll find the brand and I'll make it my vibe. Okay, all right. My suck for the week, apart from the fact that my neighbour now hates me, which, you know, look, whatever. It's fine. Get over it. My suck for the week is that Lola has gone.
Starting point is 00:36:30 So she had, you guys know, a week ago, two weeks ago, she had gastro. Then literally she got better for a day. Then she got another virus. She's had the flu or a cold or something. And because she's had these like two back-to-back sicknesses, She has completely regressed. What, in her whole life? Yeah, she's now a newborn again.
Starting point is 00:36:49 She's a newborn. She's not walking. No, she kind of is. So like she's just regressed. She's very, very clingy. She only speaks in a whinging voice about everything and she also wants a dummy. She's three and a half almost and she has been asking
Starting point is 00:37:03 for her dummy every day. How long since she's had a dummy? She has it intermittently when she's struggling. Like when she was sick she had it a bit but like she has it if she's having a really hard time she'll go and get it and have it to herself but she doesn't have it all the time by any means but now she like wants if i let her she would have it from the second she woke up to the minute she went to bed so she's whinging for it non-stop so now we've got to go through a process of dummy elimination again so that's my suck the dummy has a stranglehold on
Starting point is 00:37:31 my house so now that you thought you might want to go back and have another newborn having a regressed newborn no i it's not for you i do i still want another child laura messaged me out of the blue. We weren't even talking. Nothing. And out of the blue, I get a message. I can't parent anymore this weekend. And I said, I said, okay, come here for an hour. She goes, I can't because I do actually have to parent. Yeah. I don't want to right now, but I still have to say what's your sweet. And then my sweet for the week is on Saturday night, we took the kids to Disney on ice and I freaking loved it. It's so wholesome. It's so good. The kids had a great time, but I also had an even better time. Oh, Aladdin slapped in this Disney on Ice. He was so good. How old
Starting point is 00:38:12 are you? It was amazing. I think if you're a parent, even if you're not a parent, fuck it, go enjoy yourself. Go to Disney on Ice. Was Aladdin hot? No, he wasn't hot. He looked about 15, but he was so good. He was so good. I'm always impressed. I just can't believe that there are some people who are so talented in the world and it makes me sit there questioning, like, what do I do with my life? We have our own talents, Laura. No, nothing like them. We're still figuring it out. Yeah. I would say that I can do a lot of things, but I'm not great at any of them.
Starting point is 00:38:38 He was amazing. I was like, if only I could be that good at one thing in life. Do you want a talent so niche? Yes. Like Aladdin is your talent? I want to be Aladdin. That's so niche. And Jasmine was like flying.
Starting point is 00:38:49 Jasmine was flying and Aladdin was slapping. Go to see Disney on Ice. That's my review. Anyway, guys, that is it from us.
