Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey guys and welcome back to another episode of Life Uncut. I'm Brittany. And I'm Laura. And this is a very, very, very special episode because it is our first episode after we won the People's Choice. Listen, same thing. Well, okay, whatever. We won an award, guys. I feel like I'm in high school again. I haven't won anything since, well, I mean, I won a boyfriend, a fiance. Yeah, what do you mean? You won The Bachelor. You can't have it all, Laura. Okay, but before that, it's been a really long time. It was like high school and blue ribbons. Well, before that, the last thing I had won, before that, I say it like I won the bachelorette lol before that the last thing I won was the Easter hat parade
Starting point is 00:00:58 when I was in year three my mum made me the best Easter hat and I remember being like talk of the town so the listeners choice has really topped things off for you then hasn't it anyway until then I didn't really win much until the listeners choice so uh yeah so for anyone who doesn't know what we're talking about on the weekend it was the Australian podcast awards it was all very weird and very 2020 we had to watch it on zoom and I know our one award show that we get to go to and we had to do it online at home eating pizza. I know and we had asked all of you guys to vote and anyway so many of you did we're so so grateful and we won. So we just thought we'd come on here to say a massive thank you to every single person who took that minute out of their day to go and
Starting point is 00:01:38 do it because I know that we begged you and we hustled you and well it was worth it. I actually got I had somebody write to me and they were like hey just so you know that's 44,000 puppies you owe us. I put a call out and was like hey guys if you vote for me I'll give you a puppy love you bye and someone actually called me out on it sorry that i don't have 44 000 puppies bribery works though it really really does for real um you guys you just made our year it was such an amazing end to a year it made all the tears the long nights the hard work worth it so thank you so much for your support you love the community you're all incredible and we just froth it it made all of the recording next to my dirty laundry for britney so much more worth it she was like fine i'll come
Starting point is 00:02:16 back and do it again but i apart from that okay i'm just gonna go into like a rant about my weekend anyone who follows me on Instagram probably already knows doing the podcast award was well and truly my highlight Britain I was supposed to go out for a nice dinner it didn't happen dinner well yeah we planned like a nice dinner to celebrate five million downloads it didn't happen because Marley got sick again and okay I know that like for about two months there I was banging on about how I just couldn't send Marley to daycare because I it made me really emotional and I really couldn't handle the thought of her being upset and she was really struggling with it now I'm just struggling with the fact that she's sick every single week she comes home
Starting point is 00:02:55 from daycare with some other like germy weird bug and she's a broken child for like four days so literally she goes to daycare on Monday and Wednesday and then by Thursday she's sick and then she's sick all weekend and then by Monday she's better again and then the whole thing starts again it sucks because I guess it's like this is how kids build their immunity but also back-to-back sickness is not ideal like you're like okay let's just get everything at once get it over with so we can move on with your life I was like I'm ready to put everything in the bin yes the house the baby the car the husband Matt I'm moving to the Bahamas but okay I'm going to tell you a story of what happened to me on Thursday so Thursday this was this was my week how my week kind of
Starting point is 00:03:31 started I know that Thursday's really starting the week in the middle but anyway I started on Thursday I had to go into Maya in the morning to go pick up some clothes because we had a shoot in the afternoon I was like all right well I was on a timeline so I got there as soon as it opened had marley in the pram hadn't really packed any things because i was like well i'm just running in nipping in nipping out we gave his last words we get into maya marley projectile vomits all over herself in the pram like everywhere all over the floor all over herself all over the pram the floor like literally in the clothing section and djs on carpet no on tiles tiles was fine I had some little details you're like was she drinking milk what was it what is it
Starting point is 00:04:17 anyway so then I obviously had to wipe I had baby wipes I wiped her up I then got her to the baby room I took all her clothes off so she's just in a nappy in a pram that's covered in spew I walk into Zara I buy her a new outfit and I was like cool all right we've sorted we go back into David Jones and in the meantime there's all these other people looking at me like why the fuck is this kid in a pram nude anyway we get into david jones i pick up the clothes that i wanted i go into the change room i'm standing in the change room and marley decides that right then and there is the perfect time in a very small confined space to do the world's biggest dump just shits herself but does she have a nappy on yes she's had a nappy on but it's not that it's like
Starting point is 00:05:01 we've all been into a change room after someone's farted oh yeah oh yeah or walked into a lift after someone's farted it was like undeniable that someone had just taken a shit in this change room and I was the only one in the change room at the time and the woman recognized me and was like oh I listened to the podcast so here I am in this change room it stinks I walked out and I was like I'm so sorry I promise I didn't fart in your change room it was my child she is feral anyway I then I then had to explain that story to four other people who were also walking on the floor because I was so petrified that anyone would be like, hey, that's that girl from The Bachelor who just farted in the change room.
Starting point is 00:05:40 I'm pretty sure if you're walking with your small child, they wouldn't think that it was you that had whiz popped. They would think that it was your child. Kids are great though because even when it is you, you can blame it on them. Like having a dog. I've definitely farted in a supermarket before and then been like, oh, yeah, sorry about that. My kid's just done a poo.
Starting point is 00:05:57 They're like, you don't have a kid. You're like, ah, yes, I do. I was like, that's right. She's not with me right now. oh man guys it's been a wild wild week but we have an awesome episode planned for you today we are interviewing Sabrina Frederick who is on this season of SAS for everybody who is watching it and is as sick for reality tv as Britt and I are I mean the show has been amazing but she is amazing on it and she she's doing incredibly like it's insane she's such a powerhouse and
Starting point is 00:06:22 she's only 24 years old she's also has an incredibly successful career in AFL and is a pioneer in women's AFL football so we really wanted to get her on the podcast there's so many different things that we are talking about in this episode we're talking about her relationship with Lily Kadeem Matthews and how she navigated coming out in her same-sex relationship we're talking about her career in a very male-dominated sport and we're also talking about her experience on SAS so it's just such a great great interview which we can't wait for you to have listened to however before we get into that you guys know that we never do an episode without accidentally unfiltered brittany i'm up i've got a beauty i've got a killer laura goes is you accidentally
Starting point is 00:07:04 unfiltered funny today and i couldn't even breathe i don't know if i'm in a silly mood if it's that funny you know how you like a question yourself i really hate that you've preempted this as being super funny because now if it falls short i'm like fuck brit okay bring me the short i'll find another one all right bring it to me this is probably the most embarrassing moment of my life me and my partner were at his house and we're getting like me and my partner were at his house and getting down and dirty i was about to have the big oh and i said yes daddy as you do my boyfriend replied and said i love it when you call me daddy during this very private loud and detailed sexual exchange
Starting point is 00:07:52 Siri decided to be nosy. Turns out she thought we were in need of her services and she called my dad. Siri, why are you doing me dirty? He picked up and heard a beautiful symphony of moans and groans and my big oh. My partner saw the phone call next to the bed, threw me off the bed in like a Hunger Games style to cut to the call.
Starting point is 00:08:16 I have a bruised arm, a cracked phone screen as a result. I have been here for three days and I don't intend on going home ever she's like call me daddy I love it when you call me daddy seriously I am calling daddy I love that we have received so many of these where they've accidentally sent a nude to their parent never ever before have we had anyone live call their dad whilst they're having an orgasm that's just a whole next level of really really full-on nobody nobody ever wants to experience that moment with their father. No, Siri, you're fired.
Starting point is 00:08:49 This is where technology is too smart for its own good. We're not smart enough. That's the real problem. He said the words, call me daddy. Imagine being like, hi, possum. And then all you hear is like. That was a really, really bad sex noise. I can't remember what sex noises are like.
Starting point is 00:09:07 Yeah, it happens to the best of us. Okay, I've got an accidentally unpeeled before you. I'm glad that didn't fall short for you. Oh dear. No, that got me right in the good giggles. So this one is, okay, guys, this just happened to me and I wanted to post on the face group page. However, there's too many people on there that I know. So here it is. I went to one of those cheap little waxing places to get my brows done. They look fantastic by the way. Good to know. And whilst I was there, I noticed that they also do bikini waxing. So your girl is heading to the hot springs tomorrow. So I thought,
Starting point is 00:09:38 yeah, why not? I'll go for it. They lead me through their tea room, rolled out some paper on the table and told me to get on and take my pants off anyway she she convinced me to get a Brazilian instead but now I'm suspicious that maybe she just wanted to give it a go for the first time a few minutes later she's like a trainee yeah a few minutes later she had packed my vagina with so much hot wax I could feel the wax in places where wax really doesn't need to be she then takes her gloves off and starts peeking under the wax unable to get it off what i'm so confused you don't pick the wax off well obviously the wax wasn't even on hair it was like in her vagina so the woman was like how do i oh my god after picking and pulling for a while
Starting point is 00:10:22 my poor little cooch is now wax free it was so damn painful and when i looked down after she'd finish my vagina is swollen red and raw with heaps of stray straggly hairs everywhere so i'm so confused what did she actually wax now i'm sitting in the car on a pack of peas contemplating going to the gp for an inevitable infection and the pain is unimaginable not to mention she wiped me down with oil on toilet paper look i really think my god i think you need to leave a very strong review on google reviews for this woman i would be leaving a one star and some very very stern words i want to know what sort of shop you're in because oil and toilet paper on wax inside your vagina there's a lot of there's there's so many things going wrong
Starting point is 00:11:07 although my this is like my greatest fear because like i can't see my vagina anymore i haven't seen it in weeks guys i'm too pregnant now my my i was standing at the beach the other day and i looked down i was like i can still see the tip of my big toes but the vagina was gone a long time ago wild well i try and shave but i'm not sure what i'm shaving like just like a lightning bolt Harry Potter not even I reckon I just have like a lot of sparse hairs hanging out anyway get Matt to do it no that's just a level of intimacy I don't have no there's some things that should remain private oh I've seen you guys do some stuff that's worse than that there's a lot of weird stuff that goes on down there during like this late in pregnancy when you're this close to
Starting point is 00:11:50 the finish line it's not pretty I just don't think he needs to be that close to it I want him to find it appetizing again one day you could treat yourself I guess to like a professional wax if you're worried about it being all natural oh look what is it out of sight out of mind truly truly reigns true in this situation you know i can do i've been doing brazilians on myself are you offering do you want to give me a brazilian if you want to see my vagina brunette i can do it in 10 minutes go to woe i'm amazing i am like actually probably less i can i can oh five minutes i can't wax i end up getting the worst ingrown hairs i'm just nowhere i can't wax anything everything's a shave a shave or a laser mine's perfect here she goes I just nailed it I've
Starting point is 00:12:32 just nailed the wax well I guess we didn't really expect to go down that rabbit hole of uh wax or not to wax shave or not to shave I blame you you brought the accidentally unfiltered this is true I blame you too anyway should we get into the interview let's get on that note let's get into a really insightful beautiful interview with someone who's really successful yeah welcome Sabrina and then there's just me and Britt. Sabrina we are so excited to have you on today's episode. Welcome to Life Uncut. Oh thank you so much it's been really crazy at the moment so I'm glad I could put some time in and fit you guys in because I'm really excited for this. Well speaking of fitting us in so we just started we actually this is our second take guys I'm gonna I'm gonna
Starting point is 00:13:14 tell you what just happened. We're old friends now. So we just started recording the podcast we got through question number one and halfway through it I was like I might just check the machine and make sure everything's well oiled and I hadn't hit record so we're going in for round two look I don't want to put all the pressure on you I didn't hit record either we're in this together although it's my job but anyway Sabrina thank you so much for making time I know that I have been hounding you for the last two weeks to try and get you on our podcast and I mean just so you guys all know Sabrina did message me and she was like look I have one hour spare and I can do it from my car so it's nice to see that you're not actually in a car right now but thank you so much
Starting point is 00:13:51 for making time for this no no not at all I would have done it in the car anyway we've been so excited to have you on Laura and I've been talking about you for weeks because you're such an enigma and you're such an absolute powerhouse weapon on SAS there's no other way to describe you we're like what's the best way to describe it she's just a weapon I know I literally got through the first episode and I was like oh I would have gone home I was like Roxy just said it lasted six hours I would have lasted about 45 minutes when they were like you need to go do backflip out of the helicopter I was like oh I'm gonna go home now it's not happening it's funny at the start I was watching it at the first step and I was like do you know what I could do this I would love this
Starting point is 00:14:29 show and as I've seen snippets of as the show's going on I'm like nah nah there's no way yeah it was it was tough so I thought we'd kick off this interview by finding out a little bit more about who is Sabrina Frederick. Now I know that you weren't born in Australia and that you came here when you were young but can you tell me a little bit about that time in your life? Yeah so I'm born in a place called Surrey in England and I moved to Perth, Western Australia when I was seven years old. So I did have memories of living in the UK but it's still really fresh. Moved to I would say a rural town in in Perth an hour out from the city and it was sort of a culture shock to me because I went from living a city life in the UK to the middle of nowhere um 10 big big difference
Starting point is 00:15:21 and um went to a private school in the UK where there's brick and it's you know tie and everything to a school where you could anyone can walk in you're wearing bucket hats and t-shirts and shorts welcome to australia how bogan can we make it for your arrival hang on i wear bucket hats now what's wrong with the bucket hat oh yeah queen case girlfriend so yeah it was a complete 180 and um i had to adjust pretty quickly um and as a kid you're so naive and you just want to make friends in a new school like it's hard enough as it is let alone moving across the world um leaving all your friends and family behind um also adjusting to the fact that the kids in my class they had never met someone of dark skin
Starting point is 00:16:13 that wasn't aboriginal so they were sort of trying to get their head around that as well um and yeah it was it was sort of a rough period for me at the start um just trying to fit in I suppose as a kid that's all you want it's crazy now like I don't really want to fit in with people but at that time that's all I wanted and I guess it's funny because I'm now playing professional football but that was sort of my way of feeling like I belonged in this country I was playing football at recess and lunch with the kids and that's how I made friends so it's crazy how it's come full circle I did read something and I can't remember where exactly I read it but you had said like that the kids in your class couldn't really get their head around
Starting point is 00:17:01 the fact that like you were from England but you were also black and in their minds they were like whoa this doesn't make sense and so there was like an added feeling of isolation because they couldn't even relate to where you would necessarily come from as your home before being in Australia as well yeah and I don't think it I mean it's not it wasn't a malicious thing it was it was genuinely they'd never come across that and they genuinely didn't know um and that's really hard to be confronted with as a kid because you don't really know what to do and you don't know what to say other than yeah I exist for me I felt like there was a massive a massive pressure to lose my accent pretty quickly so I tried really hard to not sound English um which is actually really
Starting point is 00:17:53 hard when you think of it and um thinking back like me and my siblings both have actually had the conversation we all felt the same way like we felt like we had to sort of downplay what we sounded like which is crazy when I think about it now but I guess you completely hit the nail in the head like when you're a kid all you want is to fit in and all you want is to be the same and then it's not until you kind of get into your well it's not until you become an adult that you're like actually it's really amazing being someone who's completely unique and I think one of the things that really shocked me about you is when you put up a post the other day and you're like it's my 24th birthday we were like what I was like how are you 24 and this is not like an
Starting point is 00:18:38 appearance thing this was just this energy that you give off like you're so wise beyond your years and you're you have such a maturity about you well you've just achieved so much too I'm like I am a decade older than you and you make me feel like a child so I was like where does this come from where does this like like really mature outlook on life come from I probably have to credit a lot of that to my my family we've always been grown to be independent for a start but I think also just like when you make a move like that across the world you sort of have to grow up pretty quickly um and learn to operate um best for yourself but I think also being put in a male dominated sport like being I suppose you could call it a trailblazer because I was a part
Starting point is 00:19:32 of the first group of elite women who play football you have this responsibility thrown on you pretty quickly and I got signed at 18 almost 19 years old and yeah you sort of have to pick things up um very quickly and learn how to I guess carry yourself so I think it would be a combination of all those things but I don't know like it's I don't feel like it's I don't know I feel like I've been 24 for a long time though I will say that it's one of those weird things isn't it when someone's like oh you seem older than what you are like you're like thanks yeah yeah it's like cool but I don't know but it's a total it's a total compliment I guess you know and like you know maybe that's just me being totally ageist where I remember what I was like
Starting point is 00:20:23 when I was 24 and I was still like running around trying to figure shit out but it is a reflection of like the circumstances that you've been exposed to as a child but also being forced into this really high pressure environment where you kind of have to adapt to and I think that that's what we see in SAS as well this is where this resilience comes from yeah correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you have a degree in psychology I haven't completed it unfortunately don't worry we have a relationship podcast and we have no degree in relationships so you're perfectly qualified in our lives but was it ever was it ever something that you looked at and you're playing with all your friends at school and obviously you knew you were good and people in your life knew you
Starting point is 00:20:58 were good your coaches knew you were good but was it ever anything you thought would be attainable to make a career out of oh definitely not I think like that's a funny thing that you say because yeah when I was when I first picked it up there was no elite competition for women like it wasn't existent it wasn't I didn't think oh I could you know play this at the highest level but at the same time like when you're a kid you just have this magical aura that you're just like I can do anything you know and I love that it felt like I just felt like I just wanted to be the best whatever that meant at the time and I think that I was lucky I was one of the lucky ones that as I was figuring that out and figuring out that I you know I wasn't completely rubbish that the it was
Starting point is 00:21:45 starting to open doors and the pathway was sort of being created in front of me and you know by the time that AFLW the whispers of AFLW becoming a thing was happening I was around the age of 16 17 and I was right there and I'm extremely grateful for that because I've met so many women who who missed out on that opportunity and chance that you know they would have dreamt of playing at the highest level and yeah I'm just really grateful that I was born at the age that I was yeah and that we're living in a time where things are changing and they're changing so rapidly I mean even in the last few years I think we've seen so much shifting from from in all aspects because it's been so overdue but one of my big questions about this was like what is it like for you
Starting point is 00:22:33 playing in a sport that even though there is a space for women now it is still very very male dominated and how have you seen sort of the views and perceptions of people changing over the last couple of years yeah it's um don't get me wrong I love playing at the highest level I think it's the best thing ever being able to play anything at the highest level but I think that my frustration sometime is people expect such a high standard of our competition when we have not as much resources we don't play full time and we're not as old like we haven't been around for as long and I think that's my frustration is you know we're only just seeing girls now that are getting drafted this year that have had that pathway all the way through from Auskick to now and you see
Starting point is 00:23:23 that skill level change but I think that we're still expected to execute we're still expected to be as good as as the boys and I definitely think that um individually you can achieve those things but I think as a whole competition we're still in our infancy we're only just getting started and I think it's pretty incredible to see what we've created now already we're only four five seasons in so I'm looking forward to what the future brings but it's definitely difficult when you're you know you're the little sister trying to make make a name for herself you know but that's how it used to be looked at right like it used to be looked at as like oh well women can play up until a certain age and then okay that's enough now like no one wants to watch that or they
Starting point is 00:24:11 don't really want to do that and it's really only been in the last couple of years that that has shifted massively and like the numbers of viewers have increased dramatically the numbers of players have increased dramatically and I think that that's just such a testament to how quickly our views around just our views around women in sport in general is changing do you want to know what i remember when i was um 18 this is funny but i was an australian champion um women's body boarder so best in the country then that's awesome well this is the funny thing the boys in the competition the men in the competition they won money prizes i got a trophy and a pat on the back And I was like, I've just done the same thing that you've done.
Starting point is 00:24:52 But at the time, I didn't even really think about that. I was just like, mom and dad, like I won. Like I was just stoked. But it's so funny to look now. It's still that women are painless in all sports. And exactly what you just said, we're expected to achieve a certain level and perform at a certain level. But no one wants to give us the kick up that you need. The same kick up that, you know, all these men are getting.
Starting point is 00:25:10 And it is nice to see that it's changing. And it's people like you and coming out and putting your voice out there and making us all fall in love with you on TV. that's helping to change that it's definitely not that whole woe is me thing either like we're not out here being like um we're not grateful and we're not you know wanting to play at the the highest level i understand it's going to take time and you know it probably won't be my generation that that gets to be full-time and gets treated fairly and that's fine but if you've got to put in the work now to make sure that that does happen in the future because you know if i have a young girl and she wants to play footy I want to make sure that she's supported and she's going to be
Starting point is 00:25:50 rewarded for the hard work that she puts in you know what I mean there was such a great quote that you said which I'm going to repeat to you but you said on the show being unfairly treated drives me to work harder than the guy next to me and that's for me that was such a big and powerful statement talk me through why is it that when you feel like you've been treated in a way that's unjust it makes you want to do more because I think for a lot of people it would make them feel really defeated? I think that I have learned in my 24 years of life that actions speak louder than words. Some people just don't listen. Like when you say, you know, I'm just as capable or I'm just as strong or, you know, whatever it may be. And I felt like in my life, the only way
Starting point is 00:26:39 that i could prove that i was good as or if not better was just by putting my head down doing the work because you can't you can't deny that you can't deny what you're seeing you can't deny the results and for me that's just how i've always operated is just just get it done just show them and it's not it's not like a oh i'm gonna prove you wrong in this really aggressive way it's like i'm capable women are capable amen so like let me show you that we're capable it's literally the age-old saying isn't it it's actions speak louder than words don't believe me okay i'll physically go and show you and then you you can't argue the point exactly like we're dying to get into the show we are and we keep like this is yeah i'm like i'm almost there but
Starting point is 00:27:24 this is just that we're just warming you up we're just sweetening it up for it like before we get a few more questions before we jump in there um just some career lowlights and highlights so i guess what what are the biggest challenges you've had to face in your journey to becoming a professional athlete and what are you know the antithesis of that what is your career highlight what's been the best moment today lowest moment oh this is hard this I mean there's been a few I mean you don't have to have just one yeah I don't know I think it's probably going back to what i was saying about like just the expectation not being realistic like people just putting so much expectation to be a certain way without the same support and resources i know that's not
Starting point is 00:28:12 like one specific instance but for me i think that will always be the low light honestly of my career is just that constant like fight and in terms of highlight I would have to say honestly my first ever AFLW game like that feeling will never go away like and we won thank goodness um but that just that feeling of getting to run out as a professional for the first time ever like all that work you put in and not just you but all the people that come before you like in that moment it was just amazing like electrifying like my hairs are sticking up now it was the best best feeling i'm like look laura britney's like so empathetic that anytime anything like exciting or like loving or anything happens on the podcast she's always like look at my hairs on my arm i do
Starting point is 00:29:08 Nobody else can see them, but I get to see them quite often. I do. I really, I really, I feel like I'm really in tune with people. I can really feel people's passion and excitement when they talk about things. And I was, when you were just explaining that, in my mind, I was like running out onto the sports field with you. Like, I couldn't imagine how it was. I can't.
Starting point is 00:29:25 Oh, 100%. But that's how it felt. Like, even with the supporters out there, like, that's how it felt. It didn't feel like it's bigger than football in that moment. It didn't feel like it was just you. it's like all the little girls all the women that didn't get the opportunity like the whole community the club like everyone is with you in that moment I think that that's 100% what it's like so I'm glad you felt that that moment the reason why it's so significant is because it's
Starting point is 00:29:54 it's history changing like it's such a pivotal time to say like this is different now you know and this is the first step towards that so that that justifies your arm hairs Brittany just got them again when you said it's like when you like a history changing I'm like amen but uh Sabrina before we get into talking about SAS something else we wanted to talk about but like you share so much about your personal life on your Instagram as well and we've seen that you're engaged congratulations thank you thank you and we love love here at Life Uncut well we are like I mean originally this podcast started as a relationships podcast you know we wanted to like empower people to live authentic lives and to like make the best decisions in their relationships so they weren't
Starting point is 00:30:33 settling for things below them and so like it makes us so happy when we see people who are in happy loving fulfilled relationships but basically i wanted to know how did you and lily it's lily isn't it yes how did you and lily meet originally well actually this is a good story we i'm here for it the smile on your face right now everyone you're absolutely beaming sabrina we actually didn't meet in person like and this is a real like catfish potential moment here she um she sent me she sent no she yeah she sent a photo of me um that she had seen on the afl women's instagram and said you have a nice smile now at the time i really thought she was hitting on me but knowing her now this is where i get like the sharing love from like she
Starting point is 00:31:27 is all about giving comments like positive comments to random people like she'll see someone in the street and say you have beautiful eyes like that's the type of person she is she's awesome and back then i thought like she's this is oh this is nice i'm in with the cheers yeah so yeah so um we just kept talking genuinely as friends and um got to know each other and then it sort of just escalated from there honestly um and i think the coolest part about not meeting and that whole thing is we got to know each other for us for real like we actually got to know each other before you know seeing the person without touching the person without knowing what they smell like you genuinely get to know what they're really like and i'm so grateful for that time
Starting point is 00:32:21 because i feel like by the time we did meet it was like i'd known her my whole life and yeah i'm really grateful for that time and i'm grateful for her because she teaches me so much and i'm i'm grateful that she loves me the way that she loves me because it's it's really cool when you find someone that that loves you for you and just wants you to be the best person because you want to reciprocate that and like you said before don't settle for anything less like you you're every person deserves to be loved and like truly loved and respected and all those things and I'm really grateful that I found someone like that and I put a ring on that very quickly and that's my question okay so firstly how when was the time where you realized you're like oh
Starting point is 00:33:10 this isn't actually just a friendship now there's something more and then you're like she accidentally sent me a nude photo and I was like okay we're not friends this is actually happening now and then how long until you actually met and then how long until you actually put the ring on it we so we started speaking and we were actually kind of already together before we met sort of I can't explain it it's real it's reason why I say that is because I've watched the tv show catfish and honestly i always am like how can those people like do that and then it happened to me in it just before just before i was about to meet her in person i went oh shit like what did she what am i actually doing like actually it happened to me and it didn't thankfully but
Starting point is 00:33:58 um yeah so we were i guess together before we we caught up which was a few weeks um after i was playing a game in melbourne she's from melbourne so we got to catch up which was nice but this is going to sound really cliche but the first time i actually heard her voice on the phone i i knew then like i'm done then again guys i'm worse but seriously like ask my closest friends my family they will tell you that i knew from the beginning that she was going to be the one and she wasn't a catfish so it was good Sabrina I want to I want to know like what was it like for you when you when you went through that period in your life where you were like okay I'm gonna come out to my family I'm gonna come out to my friends was that challenging for you did you find it easy
Starting point is 00:34:49 talk me through what that period of your life was like yeah I mean I wouldn't say I came out because I didn't really it wasn't really I don't do jump out of a cupboard you weren't like I never do things like that I actually hate that expression as well and I don't know why I said it like that yeah I didn't I didn't jump out of a cupboard actually actually this is not gonna be weird but I was actually building a cupboard with my sister when I let her know that I was seeing someone that was a female which is like this is a euphemism for my relationship I'm climbing out of this closet right now like I find it interesting because I think some people have really challenging environments with their family some people it's like second nature and
Starting point is 00:35:39 just like not even a thing I mean my brother came out when he was 16 and he didn't have to come out we just knew and he was like I got a boyfriend and no one cared it wasn't a thing but everybody has such a unique journey in that self-discovery in their sexuality regardless of whether you're gay straight bi whatever but what was that period of your life like when you were like okay cool hey everyone knows now yeah well your family just like yeah we know doll well my my parents so my mum's actually um she's white and my my dad's black so they they understood very quickly because for them when they got together like it wasn't that long ago but it also wasn't that it was still a bit people getting used to like having white and black people date so they had gone through that
Starting point is 00:36:31 uncomfortable time that I genuinely don't think that they ever wanted for their kids to feel like they couldn't love whoever they wanted to love genuinely and I think that that's why it wasn't a thing for me and I understand that people have some really tough situations that they're in or have been in but for me it was very much just we don't care as long as you're happy and I was really really grateful for that and I think because of that I didn't really care what other people thought because like for me it was just my family like that's that that was all that mattered to me I didn't really care well that's they're the people that should matter really isn't it it's like the people that you love and the people that love you and who else who cares what anyone else
Starting point is 00:37:17 thinks of you and as you would know being in the industry you're in being someone you know that people in the public know there's always those people you're always going to get a troll you're always going to get a nasty comment and you have to be able to just block that out and be like you know what I don't even know you I don't care about you and it applies to everything in life like not even just sexuality it's like there's always going to be someone who has something nasty to say it's not a reflection of the way you live your life it's a reflection of the shit they've got going on in theirs no we get it all time oh yeah 100 just do never google daily mail and laura bird it's a fucking shit fight out there sabrina oh god i could only imagine but yeah i mean
Starting point is 00:37:54 it's taking me some time to get to that point i will go back to that and say that you know there are some people that their family do have issues with but like all that matters is you and that you're happy genuinely that's all that matters i was lucky enough for my family to not really care and be accepting and i understand not everyone has that but like as long as you're fine being who you are in your skin that is the only thing that matters and it's taken me so long to get to that point but now i'm so happy because i actually don't care what people that don't know me think yeah and you get to live your life in an authentic way when you literally give zero fucks about people who don't matter I think that's a really nice message for you to be putting out to
Starting point is 00:38:37 anyone listening to this that is you know going through something with their identity trying to figure out who they are what they are what they want trying to figure out how to tell people in their life I think that's a really nice thing for them to hear right now is just that you do you and the rest will work itself out in time let's get into SAS all right all right we honestly we have been we've spoken about the SAS show quite a bit on the podcast I mean I like I was hooked from first episode and then there were a few things along the way where I was like oh this makes me feel uncomfortable and there's been lots of chat about it in the media but we kind of become full circle again and and I'm I mean there's been no point where I've wavered from watching this show
Starting point is 00:39:15 I've absolutely loved it and I think it's a very different type of reality tv show that we've never seen in Australian tv before firstly why the hell did you want to do it like tell me that um well you can probably pick from what i'd spoken about about my early childhood i just jump into things and try and learn on the fly and for me that has always been the way i operate i just like to challenge myself and i i best learn when i'm under pressure and i'm i compete at the highest level and for me i just wanted to try something new and see if my mental strength could hold up because it's what it's probably the obviously it's not the exact course that the real SAS go through but it's very similar and condensed and I just wanted to see what I'm like
Starting point is 00:40:07 under pressure you know do I hold up to what I think of myself is there room for improvement all those things and um yeah that was main reason why I did it and then the second was I knew that there wasn't there wasn't much female representation out there that are doing those things and I thought it's a great opportunity to to back myself in and hopefully inspire other people to want to do the same thing and was it easier harder different like than what you imagined when you got in there were you like you know what I'm a professional athlete I know how fit I am I know how capable I am like I've got this and then did you get in there and were you like whoa what have I done um yeah it was definitely a lot harder than I thought but I did I went had this
Starting point is 00:40:56 idea of you know you don't as a professional footballer it's not like I'm gonna go into a tennis court and say I'm gonna be the next number one it's a completely different realm and I was very realistic with the chance of not you know not lasting very long so for me I just had the expectation of just going there and deal with it head on each task or whatever you've got to do and um I think that best served me because I wasn't really worried about what was happening the next day and I wasn't really worried about what's happening that has already happened I just sort of stayed in the moment I have a pretty big question yes i think i know what's coming too one of the more controversial things that sort of divided
Starting point is 00:41:45 australia a little bit was when our mutual friend nick the honey badger cummins you guys have both got a bit of history we've got a bit of history look um you picked him obviously you saw that you picked him in the fight um which before we get into why etc i just want to know like how did that feel just out of curiosity um honestly honestly I was just happy to get one on him because we're in a fight and as far as I'm concerned you know he's landed a few on me I need to land a few on him and that's that's all that's all I was thinking uh and I'm only joking we do not have any bad blood like I think he's a great guy but what what drove you to pick him obviously he was the biggest baddest meanest strongest muscliest guy there yeah he was the
Starting point is 00:42:36 biggest recruit and for me that was the most important thing I just wanted to challenge myself and if that was a female I would have done it too I think that that's where the lines have been blurred is some people think that I picked him just because he's a guy I picked him because he's he was the biggest recruit and I wanted to challenge myself and put myself in that situation and it was sort of took a really wild turn and people responded very extreme to it which I get because you know it's not you've not seen anything like it um but in my head you know he fought fairly and I knew that he was going to give me a fair fight I didn't want someone that was not going to give me a fair fight so yeah I mean you nailed it like it was very confronting
Starting point is 00:43:27 to watch and I think because like there isn't another platform on tv where you see a man and woman fight like that like you know not in professional wrestling not in any other thing usually it's matched by body weight but it's also matched by genders so it was super confronting I think were you prepped like so what we saw on the show they had kind of commented that it's a it's a reflection of character if you were to pick a bigger person or a smaller person right but we didn't see the conversation of what the SAS agents had with you specifically did they say to you like who you pick now is a reflection of you as a person or did they just say pick whoever you want no no yeah I could have picked anyone I will I will set the record straight here this show is
Starting point is 00:44:11 what you see is what you get there is no like we don't speak to the DS like away all the things you're seeing on tv that them talking that is the first time we're hearing it too it's very very real um that well all we knew about that day was the day's focus was character that is it they didn't tell us what we were going to be doing they didn't tell us that you know extra brownie points if you smack nick in the face no it wasn't like that and i you know when they asked me who I wanted I hadn't I had a few seconds to make my mind up it wasn't like I had the whole day it was you know this is a chance to prove my character and who I represent and where I come from and I was making that decision purely for me in that moment and I think that that's you know
Starting point is 00:45:06 I think that I think that's where we it got a bit blurred was I was making that for me I'd made the decision you can't you can't throw all the extra you know what nick did all that stuff in when i dragged him into that situation i chose so yeah i think um it was definitely a good way to start i would say that um and very confrontational i think i mean we've both done reality tv you've obviously done it now we all know how it works we know there are things that aren't shown i think what divided australia so much and what sort of contributed to the speculation all the talk should he shouldn't have he I love that you've said you know like he just did his job I think the thing that really got to people and they couldn't understand was that we didn't see
Starting point is 00:45:50 any part of Nick that sort of checked up on you or you know did what he had to do but we didn't see him come to you and be like I'm so sorry are you all right check he just sort of stony face went back cold was there something we didn't see or is that just how he was that how he dealt with no no no he's sweetheart like nah he it straight away we fist pumped it was all good we talked about it and you know we have moments to ourselves on the side when the fights are still going on and to be honest i'd rather talk to him than watch the other fights going on because even though i can fight i don't want to watch other fights that's why i get it like i understand why people reacted the way they did because i don't like confrontation either um but yeah no he was lovely checked up on
Starting point is 00:46:33 me you know he's great it was it's yeah I get it like it doesn't get shown and um no he didn't just leave me to my own devices well that's why we wanted to put it out there too because we don't want we don't want people being thrown under the bus by the media like we all know that is possible when things are left out so it's really nice now that because I haven't heard you say that before so it's nice we're putting that out there and maybe Nick will get some reprieve as well yeah and I guess like because when we did have this conversation on a previous episode like all we could go off was what was being shown on the show and the lack of like concern was something that I like we both found a bit concerning but there was a hundred percent and we even covered it off
Starting point is 00:47:10 when we spoke about it on that app where we were like there has to be more to it there's obviously more to the conversation that goes on but you know you can't break that fourth wall that the stony like everyone's very militant everyone's doing exactly what they're supposed to be doing and then two seconds later have like the comforting and nurturing aspect because it doesn't really fit in with the parallels of the show so I'm really glad that you said that because that was one of the biggest things that kind of came up in the Facebook group and it came up in conversation I get it though it's it's lack of context it's just lack of context I get that like I watch my own reality shows I understand that you you make judgment based on what you see and you know
Starting point is 00:47:48 yeah you don't see the fact that you've got we've got doctors on standby you don't see all that you don't see the check-ins with us you don't see um the moments of worry all those things so I totally get that he is a caring person too like it would take a very special person to be able to go and do that and not have any sort of check-up or empathy so I think it's nice that we've put that out there but let's like let's leave the honey badger behind yeah okay I'm glad we covered that off I left him behind two years ago now so we'll just carry along what was the most challenging part of the whole experience for you um I probably would add two one would have been after that fall on hurting my back genuinely in that moment I didn't know if I could go on
Starting point is 00:48:35 just because there's only so much they could have done to patch that up to keep going and for me that was a personal choice to just push through and see if I could get through um the next day and um that was really tough for me you know going through the snow was tough and I was pretty much having the conversation in my head the whole way of just like just keep going you know just keep moving it'll be all right so that was one that was really tough um and I think the second and I'm glad that I have this to clarify was you know the confrontation between me and for us now i think it got blown up to say that we have a feud and we don't have a feud i don't hate the guy i don't even really i don't really even know him that
Starting point is 00:49:24 well but i think i've been in team environments my whole life so for me i was just a little bit shocked with the fact that there wasn't someone that was just focused on what the team wanted to move forward especially because we're on a show where we're not competing for ourselves it's not like there's a there's prize money and we're trying to you know get rid of other people to get that prize money totally understand the individual effort for that but this was very much you need each other to get through sort of scenario and I think for me we just butted heads along the way and I think that it was the first test for me of how I approached that how do I you know give feedback how do I move on from that and that was a real test that I never thought was
Starting point is 00:50:09 even going to come that i could you know go through that and move forward from that and i'm so glad that it did happen because now if that happens in in my you know team i feel like i'm confident to be able to deal with that accordingly we're just like talking about faraz like i mean he's being kind of um he's the villain put it out there well he's being posed as a villain but he's also a bit of a lovable larrikin at times as well like i think that as much as there's like a school of people or a camp of people that are like oh that's bad behavior and anti-sas there's definitely a camp of people who are sitting in there like oh he's like misunderstood and I mean was he as villainous in the show as what he was necessarily shown on the tv put it that way I mean he's I don't
Starting point is 00:50:55 hate him I really don't I need to say that that was such a diplomatic answer I think people will get it wrong like we we're not best mates and you're not going to get on with everyone in life and that is completely fine he he's an entertainer that's just what he he is he's an entertainer and his personality is very out there he he loves to you know get out of himself and you see that in the show I think the thing that I don't quite understand is there were parts in the show that don't get included that had happened and he still felt like he was being made out to be the villain now i don't understand how even with half of the things being shown you still feel like that but i also understand editing and i understand if there's one person that's doing the wrong thing
Starting point is 00:51:49 it's gonna be escalated totally get that he is just someone that you know in the team environment he wasn't fully there I think he did have I think he did have good intentions sometimes but I think it was more just the focus of the team right now and we need you to be here for the team the crazy thing was he was more than capable like his ability his strength his mental strength unreal like up here like insane but i think he's just attitude towards the team part of it and him working together is what let him down unfortunately whether how how much of a villain he is you know is questionable but he was the villain of the show you just think it's been escalated like we see every season every reality tv yeah but also i think like i mean and correct
Starting point is 00:52:41 me if i'm wrong but i always think this about the bachelor series as well is like there's situations in life that inflame your crazy there's situations that bring out the best in you and there's situations that bring out the worst in you and maybe this style of situation because like I don't get the I mean I don't know the guy from a bar of soap I know him way less than you know him that's for sure but I get you know maybe in his day-to-day he's a great guy but maybe in this sort of environment it's not suited to his personality type because he is defiant he does kind of want to talk back and like you're on the SAS you don't get to fucking talk back I mean I can't imagine him actually enrolling for the real military let's put it that way like he's
Starting point is 00:53:18 yeah he likes he likes just doing him but the thing is like i'm i like being myself too it's not it's not that i just think he just didn't like taking authority genuinely like i don't think he wanted to change what he wanted to do and and all that stuff i think everyone in there had their own personality and i watch you back and i go man i look so like angry all the time i look so like just straight but you look like a fierce weapon and i'm like sabrina you scared me in my pants but i'm like that's you know that's one side of me that's like my competitive side of me but you know you don't get to show you don't get to see like the accommodation stuff where we're just we're laughing about and we're you know so delirious that we're dancing like
Starting point is 00:54:05 you know there's all those parts and i think that yeah i don't know maybe his personality type like you said probably didn't suit this the militant style but yeah I don't know it's a hard one it's funny because you say that like you've seen that you come across so angry like I I mean I've watched almost every episode now and like there's not been one moment in the show where I think that you come across angry I think you come across as like extremely resilient but you have this incredible warmth and kindness to you as well which I think is like one of the and this like for me is what like makes me so proud to be a woman because I'm like you can be all those things as a female like you can be kind and you can be fierce and it doesn't make you a bitch you don't
Starting point is 00:54:49 have to sit on either side of the fence and I think that you embody that so amazingly on this show thank you and that's really inspirational for women who are watching yeah I you know obviously I was in there just doing myself but you know I'm I am really grateful and I'm I love the fact that i've been getting messages like that that are saying like thank you for just being yourself and inspiring people to to just go and achieve what they want to achieve because women are so capable like so capable there's so much we we're child bearers we're intelligent humans we we can be strong we can be kind we can care like there's so much going on and i just think that don't pigeons yourself pigeonhole yourself to just one thing because it's just not that I can be
Starting point is 00:55:37 serious one moment and totally in my zone and competitive but I am you asking you my friends I'm the most teddy bear person like I won't hurt a fly like I I'm I yeah maybe a honey badger but not a fly yeah unless it's a fight on national television with the biggest guy that there is once something I want to know I don't know if anyone else cares about this but it's been on my mind the food situation are you doing all these ridiculously excruciating tasks with enough energy or is the whole idea supposed to be that you're like semi-depleted to make it harder yeah like you're rationed like on the army but like do you have enough do you notice the rations are you like i'm so fat fatigued yeah you recognize the rations but it's all part of the
Starting point is 00:56:23 it's all part of the you know the show is based off the real course and you know sometimes they go without days without eating and so yeah you're definitely feeling depleted I was I'm actually a vegan so I didn't think I didn't know how much they would cater for me when I was in there genuinely um but then I found out it was mostly beans anyway so we were fine beans and rice literally beans and rice for anybody who's has no idea what was like a normal day of meals like and then also what was a normal day of filming like i'm so interested in the mechanics probably i would say on our better days we'll make sure i'll tell you a better days and then the worst days best best day would probably be some oats maybe like two scoops of oats um with sultanas in
Starting point is 00:57:14 and um then we'd probably and then lunch would be like soup like tomato soup or pumpkin soup or whatever with a piece of toast the rest of the team would get a boiled egg i obviously didn't get that because i am vegan but um then for dinner we'd probably have like beans and rice and then i'd probably have some tofu and they would all get chicken or something like that that'd be a better day oh maybe throw a mandarin in there as a snack that's your better day what a treat and then and then like the worst off day is like you get like almost a whole scoop of oats no sultanas you're getting like soup no bread and then dinner's like basically nothing was there ever a time where you were just so hungry that you were like you know what give me the damn egg
Starting point is 00:58:04 give me i will eat meat right now was it like were you like questioning your veganism because you were like i'm so i will bend my moral compass for this fucking egg um no i did not but i the one thing the team appreciated a lot was because i didn't eat my egg and they always supplied it it was like we called it the emergency egg so like there would always be a spare there'd always be a spare for someone who's like here you go boys sabrina's just giving out her hard-boiled eggs they're used to eating like they're used to eating yeah far out but no it didn't it didn't twist me I probably would have eaten the dirt first the egg but
Starting point is 00:58:47 far out I just can't imagine being in that environment but so did you lose much weight I you can see that a few people come out and everyone looks quite like I mean one emaciated is the word I think Erin said maybe eight kilos or something some of the guys lost like 14 kilos that's insane the whole course is about two weeks and well we'd probably be eating like a thousand calories a day which isn't that much at all like it's insane so yeah probably I reckon I probably lost about seven kilos as well I don't know the exact but a lot it's a lot to lose and I'm sure everyone put most of it back on within the first day and what what do you think was um best part looking back like what did you take from it
Starting point is 00:59:30 when you're looking back you're like I'm so glad I did it your most memorable moment was yeah like what did you gain from the experience knowing that knowing where my mental strength is I think just that confirmation I always thought that I was mentally strong and some people have even said that to me coaches and whatnot but I think just that confirmation that I actually am quite mentally strong was awesome and it feels like you can go on and do even harder things but I would have to say it would tie with that is genuinely and I didn't think I was gonna get this out of this experience but the people that you're in there with you leave with you know friends for life because that experience you don't go it's a hard experience and you bond on that and
Starting point is 01:00:16 it's only those people they're going to understand what you went through and I'm so lucky that the group that we had um they're absolute legends and I'm so grateful that I have now friends for life that you know are like-minded and want to challenge themselves too so those would probably be my two thing and I want to know you can only pick one person to go into battle with you from that experience who are you picking do you know I would say I would say Merrick Watts because me and him me and him really got on in there and we'll have a great friendship for life but he is like he's funny as hell but there's just another level to him I that I appreciate that you know he gets things done and he really does set his mind to it and um he's a team player he yeah gives it
Starting point is 01:01:06 his everything and I would always want someone like that by my side so I'd probably have to say Merrick Watts for sure. I heard a lot of reports most people that came out had said when they were asked that question everyone said Merrick everyone said the strength that he shows mentally was just next level but I think he's just been like such a surprise such a surprise bag for everyone who's watching it as well because you know he's one of the oldest or he was the oldest contestant on the show you don't expect this from someone who's a comedian to have this level of willpower and strength and determination and every single episode you're like everyone's teeth are chattering and they're in the water and there's Merrick just being just being a boss getting
Starting point is 01:01:46 through it and I love that too because it just shows it proves again that like anyone can do this like if you set your mind to it anyone can achieve it and I think that that's the awesome part about it and and what he's been able to show is you know he's not what you first would have picked day one and look where he is now so yeah I love Matt that man he's awesome gender is not doesn't have to define what you can achieve age doesn't have to define what you achieve it's like all of these things tie into each other and I think that that's like a beautiful message that's coming out of this show at the end because the people who are there aren't necessarily the people I would have picked at the beginning like you know I definitely wouldn't have thought if
Starting point is 01:02:26 if you had said to me Erin McNaught is going to make it this far through I would have been like please sit down like she'll be out of there week one you know but it's amazing to see these people really redefine our expectations or our thoughts of them just because they're in the public eye and you know we all kind of have this impression of who people are you did say one thing um on one of the earlier episodes and it was a quote that I think that everyone who was listening to it was like this chick she's she knows what's going on you said I'm a black woman in a same-sex relationship working in a male-dominated sport my whole life is a constant fight and there's always someone that's got to do those things first to pave the way I was like wow yes like wow
Starting point is 01:03:06 the fact that you've taken that stance that you're like yeah this is there is always has to be that first person to pave the way but in the antithesis of that is like it doesn't have to be your job you know what is it about you that made you say I want to do this I want to set this example for young girls I want to show that you know you don't have to be defined by the labels that are put on you to be able to achieve what you want to achieve in life I genuinely think it just stems from the fact that when I was young I didn't have anyone like that to aspire to be and I don't think you want to be exactly like those people but I think I didn't have anyone to look up to that I felt like I could see myself in and I think that if I did and I did have some sort of
Starting point is 01:03:50 blueprint I probably would have avoided a lot of self-doubt and I probably would have gone and done a lot more a lot younger and I think for me that it genuinely just stems from that like if I can help someone else fast track where I am now for them just by being that example then that's that's all it is is just hopefully that encourages more people to be like that you know more people in the media more people that are representing just you know showing that if you want to do something you're the only person that's like the only person that's in the way of stopping you from achieving those things and that's I wish I knew that a lot a lot earlier well all I can think of is how much of an absolute powerhouse you would have been if you had have had someone to look up
Starting point is 01:04:39 to younger because you're only 24 and you're kicking some pretty big goals like a prime minister and she's 24 years old and here we are sitting in my lounge room talking about 15 um no like I think I think you don't realize and like just to give you credit again for a second I think you don't realize how much you've done and how much of an inspiration you actually are like you are still are only 24 so there are going to be so many women now that might not have known who you are if they weren't into sport when they're younger that will know who you are now but i want to get into something a little bit more serious now if you are so willing 2020 obviously saw the biggest protest in american history which is the black lives matter movement obviously we're
Starting point is 01:05:19 starting to see some amazing change and that just caused waves around the world and we are heading in the right direction but we obviously still have so far to go we today wanted to give you a bit of a platform to give your experiences on the matter because we've read and we've heard you speak openly before about facing discrimination experiencing different forms of racism at different levels so we wanted to give you a bit of a platform today to talk about your experiences and what you think I guess we could all be doing to play our part in moving forward with this movement when everything happened sort of this year and it sort of hit the media it was actually quite emotional for me like more emotional than I originally anticipated and I think it's just
Starting point is 01:06:02 because when things come up you sort of you sort of suppress them um and you know my whole life I've been you know had jokes and things like that thrown at me and you sort of just brush them aside because you don't want to deal with it in the moment I think that when all of that stuff happened it was almost like this rage just came out of nowhere because you feel like people just don't understand and looking back I think that it wasn't that there were massive things that happened in my life where I can go back and pinpoint but I think it's just the small things along the way that change your attitude and change how you go about things and I've actually spoken to someone recently and I said that this quote just emulates what my life was like and it's it's the quote of
Starting point is 01:06:54 death by a thousand cuts and what I mean by that is yeah okay it's not a massive cut that you're going to bleed out but it's the small small cuts along the way that eventually it'll get you and I think that for me it was it's the continuous jokes like backhanded compliments um feeling like you you know you're buying a magazine there's no no one of color in them it's you know not having anyone of color on your tv it's feeling like you're someone of color has been paid out to be a criminal so your whole life you go keeping your receipts at every single store even if you've bought something for a dollar so you don't get accused of stealing it's it's all those things for me personally that has shaped me to who I am now and of course that you know I wouldn't change
Starting point is 01:07:52 a lot of things because I am who I am but I think people need to understand that these things shouldn't be happening just because of the color of your skin like that is insane and I think now's a good time because people are listening and it's good to educate people and share stories I think for me the only way that I can get my messages across is just by sharing what's happened to me personally and for others to do the same but for someone who isn't of colour I think the first thing I would say is just talk to people talk to people of colour hear their story hear what they've been through educate yourself and then be the louder voice you know fight for them in the rooms you know fight for equality you don't have to do too much just treat people as equal that's
Starting point is 01:08:42 it just share love equality that's it's so simple and I think that that's why it gets frustrating at times there is obviously a very large level of systemic racism that we still face and that's evident with things that you just said like even wanting to keep your receipts when you leave a shop because you're scared but I know for me the the thing that's affected me the most or the way I have learned the most and I'm trying to understand more and be a better person is literally like what you just said it's just talking to people and hearing their stories and hearing their opinions and the experiences that they've faced because we're not going to know the experiences you face unless we chat to you and find out literally what are the experiences
Starting point is 01:09:22 you face and it's so powerful to listen to just like your your stories right now it's even just got me thinking about that it's so true the fact that like it doesn't have to be this one prolific thing that happens to you it doesn't have to be that someone hurled a racist slant at you down the street it is the everyday very casual racism that we're so okay with and it happens very publicly and I know I remember and I'll never forget being at a restaurant with one of my closest girlfriends she's Australian but her parents are from Chinese origin and she's grown up here she doesn't speak Chinese at all and she burst out crying at dinner this one night and she was like you guys just don't get it she's like people don't treat me like this is my home they
Starting point is 01:10:01 still speak to me in a way or people will speak to me like I don't understand and she's like English is the only language I read and I I can speak and I get choked up thinking about it because it wasn't until then that I because I was like oh no one would ever be racist to you like what are you talking about like you're Australian because that's just what kind of floated in my mind but then when I hear like you tell your stories about the it's the casualness of it and then when I heard her explain her situation you know it wasn't that I was ignorant to it happening like I know that big things happen but I was ignorant to how casual people are about it and that's what made me really go okay when I'm in a room now when someone makes a joke that is uncomfortable that's
Starting point is 01:10:41 not funny where it is race related like that's when I think we need to put a hand up and be like hey not funny like we can do better than that now and that's kind of where the conversation starts to change and shift yeah and it doesn't have to be an aggressive thing too I think that people try and I think people try and fight fire with fire and I think in this instance it's just all about that clear education around it just calm you know because if I get angry and I start yelling at someone it's probably just going to reaffirm everything that they're thinking but you've got to actually change the narrative it must be frustrating though because there must be times where you're like yeah I do feel fucking angry and I want to be mad but oh definitely
Starting point is 01:11:22 yeah exactly Sabrina you're an absolute joy like thank you so much for making time to to speak to us today to share your stories to tell us more about the ins and out of SAS we're all sick for it I don't think you know how much of an inspiration you are you like you're a beautiful kind fierce successful in every way professional athlete you're in love you have a beautiful relationship there's literally nothing you can't do which is frustrating for us yeah but I'm definitely not perfect no but no no but you're an inspiration I think that that's like that's that in itself is like something that's special but no we really we appreciate you so much taking time we know how busy you are um we're glad that you didn't have to do this in your car
Starting point is 01:12:09 before we um before we go and we let you off the hook we do do a section we finish every episode the same way we do what's called our suck in our suite so it's our highlight and our low light of the week and because you are our very special guest you get to kick it off with your sucky suck of the week honestly it probably would have been the fact that i had to jump start my car no that's pretty damn sucking that's so that sucks and it was raining too of course it was that's that that definitely has to be that for sure and were you running late because that's worse yeah and you also missed your appointment i i wasn't i wasn't running late but that would have made it so much worse um yeah and then what the highlight highlight um the sweet of the sweet
Starting point is 01:12:59 probably just training with my team as a full group now with COVID restrictions lifted for sure yeah yeah that's nice back to normal life a little bit yeah well Laura what's yours you suck oh my god my suck I already started this episode by complaining about my daughter being sick for like 25 minutes so I'll try and keep my suck free um so on Friday night everyone knows my daughter's had gastro for the last the last three days but on Friday night we had a real doozy of an episode so she had thrown up in her cot and I went in to get her out of a cot and try and clean up and as I picked her up out of the cot she exorcist vomited all over we keep we keep our clean washing in her bedroom so we have a spare bed in her bedroom we keep the clean washing in there she vomited over
Starting point is 01:13:44 two weeks worth of clean washing the bed the cot the floor all of her toys honestly it was like on the walls on the blind I was like burn everything burn it so I have thrown out honestly I threw out the rug I threw out all of the doona like all of the bed linen I was like I can't even be fucked to wash that it was a lot it was a lot that's my suck um my sweet for the week is that she's better today and she's gone to daycare I was like babe you go to daycare you catch another germ you bring it back for next week but i got to have a day and tonight i'm gonna go to bed early that's my sweet brit what's your suck okay my suck my sock is so fucked my sock i went on a date this week sabrina and uh i wasn't gonna
Starting point is 01:14:34 tell anyone this but i'm gonna tell them he said to me and i quote i think you were a dude in your past life because you have a masculine energy who says that i was like excuse me what did you did you just say what i think he's like that's so strange like not in a bad way but like i think you were probably a dude and i was like what the fuck but also like brit told me this story and i was like look i mean yeah you can take this in offense you cannot take this as an offense or whatever i was like but clearly you're upset and offended by it and then brit was like i might see him again I was like don't fucking see him again Brittany like for fuck's sake have you learned nothing from this podcast I actually when Sabrina at the start of the episode she was like all in
Starting point is 01:15:18 this empowerment speech about like everyone deserves love and I was like yeah yeah I was like so literally like we'd had this great conversation but now she was like yeah I might see him again he's really nice and then she tells me this story about how she was almost in tears on the date and I was like dear god woman the man was wearing a hat made out of red flags and you want to go back there but I have two suites um I you're not allowed to have two but I do well I had one suite and then the other suite has come to my attention over the last two hours the first suite is we won podcast of the year people's choice two days ago that's my sweet yeah I forgot yeah so congratulations you're our first episode you're our first interviewee as podcast of the
Starting point is 01:16:01 years thank you thank you very much welcome we're a real professional set up here and then the second the second sweet is it's just been brought to my attention that there's a chance Zach Efron is back on the market how did this only come to your attention in the last two hours because it popped up on my laptop I obviously have notifications on oh pretty I hear that he's living in Byron these days no he's down in Adelaide filming I have to take a cheeky little drive down He has Google Alerts on for Zac Efron. That's what I'm getting out of this conversation. I have Google Alerts on for the news, but Zac Efron popped up.
