Starting point is 00:00:00 This episode is recorded on Gadigal land of the Aurora Nation. Hi guys and welcome back to another episode of Life Uncut. I'm Laura. I'm Brittany. I'm Mitch. And this is The Pick Up. This is our radio show where we package up all like the best bits throughout the week, give it to you in one nice, neat, little, tight, cute box. Speaking of tight, cute boxes, Mitch, you did share a story this week. My boyfriend FaceTimed me when I was getting my hair cut and he was butt naked. We were in the
Starting point is 00:00:29 front and he didn't realize that i was at the hairdresser and the hairdresser saw everything and they slipped and gave me this terrible haircut that you guys have been laughing at all week let me talk you through it it's not that i don't like it but for those that don't know mitch churi it's short at the sides it goes really high and long and it has like this flick back cowlick but what has happened is they've cut the cowlicky flick back back part down so now it just goes up like an inch straight in the air like a block so it just hasn't got the hook back and that's why it looks a bit strange and it will grow its hair it'll grow back it does yeah it'll come back it still changes you yeah in a good way like i look cute right yeah oh my god we're joking i
Starting point is 00:01:11 look good and that story about what happened in the salon chair on the podcast today um we also had jamie oliver join us on the show this week which feels like a real celebrity milestone for me because my number one party like my party go-to my dinner go-to anytime i have people over when I want to seem like I'm a little bit fancy and I just threw this old thing together is a recipe for fish tacos that came from Jamie Oliver like 10 years ago and I still wheel it on out anytime someone's coming over. What do you think that says, Mitch,
Starting point is 00:01:39 the fact that you and I have never been to dinner and had a fish taco? You know, I was just thinking that. Never. She's like, I wheel it out for all my friends. Yeah, I was like, hang on, when? I've never had one. Yeah, no, this is true. It's been a while since I've made them though.
Starting point is 00:01:49 Oh, look at her covering. No, I'll be honest. It's because I always just buy takeaway when people come over now. I'm a busy woman. We haven't had takeaway hour. We haven't had takeaway hour. You're really digging a hole here, Laura. I keep digging it, Laura.
Starting point is 00:01:58 Shut up. Anyway, all that and so much more on the show coming right up now. Coming right up now. Serving that to you hot. In a second. Just if you sit here, it'll be now. Nellie St. Ladies, gentlemen, women, gorgeous.
Starting point is 00:02:12 There's only literally ladies in here. Laura's got like an afternoon, mid-afternoon stubble growing on. Just because she shaves her face. Guys. Do you shave it? I derma blade, yeah. That's that Tony Maglo. We can talk about my face shaving another day.
Starting point is 00:02:23 You know what? We probably don't have time this week. I've got something interesting. You remember last year when I brought you the word of the year? It was revealed that AI and Riz were the 2023 words of the year as chosen by Collins. How could we forget? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:36 Well, this year, the new words of the year have been released. Oh, it crawls around, doesn't it? It's like Mariah Carey and words of the year come out at the same time. They defrost, don't they, and they come out. I'm ready. I'm going to quiz you. I'm going to reveal the words to you. There's a bunch of words and you need to define them for me.
Starting point is 00:02:52 We've kind of unpacked some of the really dumb Gen Z words that have come out this year. I feel like it's going to be one of those. Gen Z has heavily influenced. My generation has heavily influenced. I don't know anything. You're not that generation. The Collins University.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Here we go, ladies. These are the top words of the year. Yapping. Talking. Just yapping away. Yapping has been around since the dinosaurs. Sometimes I hear these words and I'm like, or not words, but I hear these phrases and I'm like,
Starting point is 00:03:16 oh, it's like how things just come back in fashion. Yeah, but define it. Like pedal-pushed jeans. Well, yapping, like my nana would use yapping. They'd be like, oh, she yapped away, like she talked my ear off. Yeah, okay, yapping is talking at length, especially about inconsequential matters. Yapping is like the oldest word.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Literally. Your grandma should be responsible for that, not Gen Z. We yap for a living, don't we? Yeah, yapping away. All right, moving on. Delulu. Crazy. Delusional.
Starting point is 00:03:39 You're silly, you're wild. You've lost the plot. You're doing well. It's also dumb to say delusional. You don't have to go, hey, you're delulu. No, I don't mind that one. I like it. No.
Starting point is 00:03:48 Next word, brain rot. Brain rot. Like bed rot, but for the brain. Is it like just scrolling on TikTok or something and so then you're brain rotting away? Laura! I'm so in touch with you! Columns describe it as an inability to think clearly
Starting point is 00:04:02 caused by an excessive overconsumption of low-quality online media. Right, that's literally us. It explains Laura a lot. Wait, so we're brain rotting yappers, that's us. Yeah. And we're DeLulu, I identify with all of these things. You've got three for three. What about raw dogging?
Starting point is 00:04:17 Oh, raw dogging's when you go on a flight and you don't have any stimulus. So, like, no phone, no water, no nothing. You just sit there and breathe. I don't know, meditate. That is true, but raw dogging is also an old term that is used in the bedroom sometimes. Oh, yeah. When somebody wants to do the horizontal dance of love. Without a condom.
Starting point is 00:04:34 Oh, I was trying to beat around the bush there, Laura. Sorry, sorry. Kids in cars. Don't ask your mum what that is. But, yes, you're right. Without preparation. Undertaking an activity without preparation. Oh, so you can be raw dog.
Starting point is 00:04:44 You can raw dog anything. You could raw dog a test. Yeah, you've raw dogged this whole show today. Give raw dog your life. Laura's life is raw dog. All right. Are you doing very well? What about looks maxing?
Starting point is 00:04:53 Looks maxing. To maximise your looks, getting Botox. It's just where you probably go to the nth degree to look your best. Is it? I don't know. I don't know what looks maxing is. I'll give it to you. Attempting to maximise the attractiveness of one's physical appearance.
Starting point is 00:05:07 Don't we all do that, though? That is definitely me. No, it's me too. Yeah, but it's doing it intentionally. Until I get married, then I'm going to let myself go. Ben's going to be in for a surprise. Finally, girls, the word of the year. Brat.
Starting point is 00:05:20 I've quizzed you on this before and famously you didn't. Oh, Britt's doing the apple dance. I know the dance. It's like cool girl summer. Is it kind of the same, akin to the same thing? Yeah, it's like just living your best cool girl life. Without caring what people think about you. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:05:35 I always get this one wrong. It doesn't make sense. Because you don't live it. You're brain rotting. Yeah. Sorry, Mitch. Just tell us. Brat summer.
Starting point is 00:05:42 You're kind of right. It's inspired. by charlie xx yeah by charlie you know charlie that's a song the album is brat it's brat summer it's just a nonchalant no care i can sleep with who i want i can look like who i want i can say what i want i can do and wear what i want i'm brat wow guys one of hollywood's biggest superstars has come out and in an interview told the world what he deems to be the worst age possible like The worst, not only the worst decade you can have, but he's pinpointed it to the worst year of his life.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Have a listen to this. You know, I'm 68 years old. The hardest for us was when we were playing 35. That time where your metabolism stops, gravity starts tearing you down, your bones start wearing off. You stand differently. I think I'm in better shape now.
Starting point is 00:06:32 You look great. I was going to tell you that. Because, you know why? Because my kids are grown up, I'm getting decent exercise and I can eat right. You can't do that when you're 35. Life is such a burden. Now, you don't need me to tell you who that is.
Starting point is 00:06:44 That voice is iconic, but it is Tom Hanks. We know him from Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Catch Me If You Can. What I find interesting is, so at 37 is when he did Forrest Gump. So that's when he became huge. So he was an actor and he was famous, but he wasn't at like a huge level yet, which I think is important. Oh, he was hustling. Yeah, but I think it's interesting because I'm 37.
Starting point is 00:07:06 so he's saying two years ago was his worst year it was probably my worst year it was probably when I think back to all my time this is probably my greatest decade but my worst year was 35 as well was that because of I was depressed and broken up and heartbroken everyone left me no one loved me I really went through a very public breakup but I was like is that was there a reason I didn't want to unpick it too much yes no one loved me Laura I think it's an interesting one because we've had this conversation before Mitch and I have said to you that your 20s are an absolute mess right like I think 20s is like the decade where things go wrong, you're so seeking of approval, like you're just trying
Starting point is 00:07:41 to meet someone who doesn't treat you like crap and you don't get paid very much money. Speak for yourself. Well, your 20s is hard. You're fat, you're ugly, you're covered in acne. No one wants you. You're gay. They're cheating on you.
Starting point is 00:07:53 You're figuring out your sexuality and then you're 30s. I feel like you're 30s in the year. You're gay but you're still with women. It was a bad time. I'm 29. I'm about to turn 30 so I haven't had 35 yet. So that stresses me. So your bad year, Brit, was 35.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Laura, 35, you had a kid, didn't you? I had a kid at 35. But what I was going to say is I think my 30s have been my best years. But I absolutely relate to this sentiment that you actually don't have any time for yourself. Like they're the best years for your life. But in terms of what you can actually do to prioritize yourself, like getting sleep, you know, eating the right foods, having exercise, like all of the stuff that, you know, normally would make you really happy.
Starting point is 00:08:30 I think like I am in the absolute thick of that at the moment. And sleep doesn't exist. my friendship circle is really small in comparison to when I was I was in my 20s and it's kind of just like work my family and then you guys and that's my that's my but you're you're saying that based on the fact that you have kids so I'm 37 like similar age I don't have kids I have all those things so my life's great I don't have a toddler keeping me up like I get to sleep I get to walk with friends I get to spontaneously go away on the weekend um have your body started to fall apart like because he said the aches and pains you know when you sneeze and you're like oh
Starting point is 00:09:02 My back hurts now. What has happened? I'm young. Don't you sneeze and wet yourself? Yeah. Or you sneeze and it drips down your legs. No, that doesn't happen to anyone. Just someone who birthed two children.
Starting point is 00:09:11 Are you joking? No. No, but I think we've been sold a lie. I think we've been sold a lie. And that is that as you get older, it gets worse. Because I would dare say, and we've spoken to lots of people in this show before and also on Life on Cart, on the podcast, who have said that every year and every decade it gets better and better, even though we're conditioned to think that just because you
Starting point is 00:09:30 get older, it gets worse. My Alma is 87, right? She's Dutch. She came here on a boat in the 40s with her sisters and her parents and she thinks that the 80s are the best year of her life. Why don't we all call someone in our life, like a grandpa or a mum or dad or something, and ask them what their best age was?
Starting point is 00:09:45 Oh, I love that. That's cute. All right, dialing Tony. Oh, that's my dad. Britt's dad. I hope he answers. How old's he? 68.
Starting point is 00:09:54 Tony Hockley. That's an official way to answer the phone. It's Britt. Oh, hi, Biddy. How are you? I'm good. How are you? Excellent, thank you.
Starting point is 00:10:01 Hey, Pops, you're on radio. What's up? Just to keep the girl here. Get my serious voice on. Yeah, Pops, we don't have to put your serious voice on. Hey, I just wanted to ask you, as someone that is so wise and so well-lived, when you look back at your life, what would you say is the best age or year and why?
Starting point is 00:10:22 Off the top of my head, I would say now. Really? At 68. That's what Tom Hanks said that. Yeah. Why is that? Because we're out of the house. Well, yeah, there's that.
Starting point is 00:10:38 No, but you're out of the house. I can see and appreciate the fruits of my labour in terms of how you guys are going. I mean, you've now got yourself sorted out with Ben. Aww. Sherry has given me your wonderful new granddaughter. Yeah. And, you know, she's coming back to Australia. So it's more based around the fact that now you have seen
Starting point is 00:11:09 your own family thrive. Yeah, they're all doing well. I'm having a great time with your mum. Yeah. Probably, you know, life's bloody good at the moment. And then if you had to just pick the worst year or age, what is it? For me, it was, oh, mid-40s, late, early, early 40s. Why is that?
Starting point is 00:11:34 Sort of make a plan in your late 20s. You work towards it all, looks like it's happening. You know, in your 30s, you're working hard, you're trying to juggle, you know, the family and mortgages and all of that sort of stuff. And, you know, sometimes it all works out and sometimes it doesn't. And, you know, you know our story. Thank you, Tony.
Starting point is 00:11:53 That's sage advice. Thank you, puppy. Yeah, love you. You're all right, guys. Let's get someone from the Byrne household. Who should we call from yours? Well, we can call someone from the Johnson household. So I live with my mother-in-law and she's 72.
Starting point is 00:12:04 Let's hit her up. She's on the line. Ellie, hello. Hi, Ellie. Hi, everybody. I would love to know what you consider to be the best years of your life as someone who's in their 70s now. Yeah, well, I certainly wouldn't want to go through teenage years again.
Starting point is 00:12:19 They were horrible. Um, I think the sort of sweet 60s, but, um, now in my 70s, even though you, you know, you have a few aches and pains, your body starts doing funny things, like you're farting a lot. Oh, Jesus. Tell us what you really think. Very intimate. I mean, I do like how you try and cover them with coughs every so often, Ellie.
Starting point is 00:12:47 They're hard to time. Oh, no. I can now time it beautifully. So you think. So I think it was, it's now, you know, now with the joy of grandchildren and that wave of love that you receive from them, it's just beautiful. And you're so bloody grateful to still be around.
Starting point is 00:13:10 Oh, you're just the best. We love you, Ellie. We love you, Ellie. Good advice. Thanks, Ellie. Take care. Love you all. Let's call my Oma.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Let's get someone from the Cheery clan. She's very brash. She's 87. She's got my handys out right now. Surely 87 can't be the best you. Well, she claims it is. She's probably like, I'm still alive. No.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Hello. Leave a message. Be quick about it. And I'll ring you back. Bye. No, hi, Alma. I love you. It's me.
Starting point is 00:13:37 Hi, Alma. It's Britt. Alma's too busy out there living her best life. She's got places to be. She's 87. She hasn't got time to mess around. Absolutely not. That's the best ever.
Starting point is 00:13:45 I love Alma. Oh, so cute. i love talking about dating red flags all the people in my past that have just been like truly horrific the red flags i wish i saw at the time but i wasn't educated enough to know about but you had little blinkers on you thought they were party streamers instead well olivia rodrigo has come out and um she's she's helping educate the world on her red flag when she goes on a date what is the number one thing that she will ask someone that will turn her off them listen to what she had to say. The biggest red flag. Okay. This is a very oddly specific question that I ask
Starting point is 00:14:21 guys on first dates. I always ask them if they think that they would want to go to space. And if they say yes, I don't date them. I just think if you want to go to space, you're a little too full of yourself. I think it's just weird. That's so dumb. Imagine being like a huge celebrity, a huge celebrity, and then saying, I'm not going to date a guy who wants to go to space because, like, their ambitions are too high. They're a bit full of themselves. No, I'm with her. I completely agree.
Starting point is 00:14:50 It just screams that you, your ego is so large that you think you, a simple man, a very boring, probably mediocre-looking man, thinks that you deserve to go to space. No, you deserve to work your casual shift at Bunnings, mate. You're not going to the East Side. What if he just screams that he has a sense of adventure? I would rather someone say that they want to go to outer space
Starting point is 00:15:10 than write that they're adventurous on their dating profiles. All right, girls. Can I change my mind? Let me give you a list of men. All right, boy. Let me give you a list of men that want to go to space and you just tell me how hot you are under the collar. Elon Musk.
Starting point is 00:15:20 Elon Musk. Yeah, Laura, you think he's hot? No, I don't want to go to Elon Musk. Jeff Bezos. Ew. Yeah. Smoke show. Gorgeous.
Starting point is 00:15:26 William Shatner. His name has Shatner. I rest my case. I don't think there's anything wrong with it. The question might be a dumb question, but I do think we could also do God's work here because dating is hard and you are in the trenches and when you're on a first date,
Starting point is 00:15:40 sometimes you just want it to work so well and so much that you will overlook the things that could be obvious red flags. And I definitely think that there are questions that you can ask on a first date, which would at least help you to sift through the absolute scum that is, you know, dating at the moment. I've got one. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:58 I would very casually over my bruschetta say, hey, what do you think of Andrew Tate? Oh, yeah, that's a good one. That's what I'd say. Very, like, straight to the point. Like, there's no subtlety there at all. It's like, what do you think of Trump? Who do you support?
Starting point is 00:16:12 Well, Olivia's asking, hey, do you want to go to space? Okay, my hot tip is if you're on a first date and you want to get to know whether the person is good or not, is ask them if they have, like, how do they, what's their relationship like with their exes? Are they friends with any of their exes? Are they on amicable terms with their exes? Because if you're dating someone and they're like,
Starting point is 00:16:31 oh, all my exes are crazy, I'm like, actually the common denominator in that is probably you. Nah, I've got something to say about that, Laura. I'm going to reverse Uno U. he will also or that other person will also be like, wow, she's crazy first date and all she wants to talk about is my ex. You can't go in hot on a first date and ask about an ex. No one wants to talk about exes or hear about exes on a first date.
Starting point is 00:16:53 Give us a call if you've got like a red flag question that you ask when you date. But mine is how's your relationship with your mum? Are you close with your mum? Oh, that's a good one. It always tells you everything you need to know. You want them to be close, but you don't want them to be too close. Too close.
Starting point is 00:17:06 Ash has called us. Hi, what's your red flag question? Hey, yeah, mine is do you put the trolley away after shopping? That's good. That's good. Yeah. It tells me how considerate they are of other people or the world around them.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Oh, last one. What age did your mum stop making your lunch? Mitch. Hey, Mitch. Your mum still makes your lunch, doesn't she? No, she doesn't. When did she stop? She never stopped.
Starting point is 00:17:29 She never did, but she does make my dinners. And she does make your bed. Yeah. Yeah. And I actually would really like to go to the stratosphere. I knew it. I think it'd be really fun. Dating's hard these days, guys.
Starting point is 00:17:41 It's tough, baby. Let me tell you. I don't think I can return to my hairdresser after what happened. Great haircut and I can't go back because as I was sitting in the chair, let me set the scene, girls. I go to this hairdresser all the time. His name's Tim. Lovely.
Starting point is 00:17:54 He's the perfect amount of chat, you know, like a bit at the start, offers me a sparkling water, a bit in the middle, a bit at the end, then we're done. Good. I like that because there's only so much chat you can have with a hairdresser. You can't talk to him for two hours straight. It goes on.
Starting point is 00:18:05 I'm like, I want to sit on my phone, you know, Let me just scroll on TikTok, which is what I was doing. So my boyfriend, Stephen, it was early morning haircut. It's the only time they could fit me in. So he was staying in bed asleep. And, you know, I said, I'm going to get my hair cut. He's like, oh, I love you. I'm sitting in the chair, scrolling on my phone,
Starting point is 00:18:17 and Tim's cutting my hair at the top. Zip, zip, zip, zip, zip, zip. Cutting away. And obviously his line of sight is my lap and my phone. And you're always conscious when you're getting your hair done that whatever's on your phone probably is inside of the hairdresser. It's very game. You're not sitting there scrolling OnlyFans.
Starting point is 00:18:33 No, OnlyFans. OnlyFans. Even as I look at those desserts. This is only flans here. Get a cheesecake. I'm going to have to excuse myself. This cream custard has really got me going. As I said it, I was like, wow, that word did not exit my mouth properly.
Starting point is 00:18:45 That's a hot trifle if ever I've said one. Anyway, as I was scrolling just Twitter and TikTok, my phone rings and it's a FaceTime. Like, oh, FaceTime. It's Stephen, my boyfriend. I'm going to answer. So Tim's cutting my hair. I'm holding my phone. Vroom.
Starting point is 00:18:58 I open the FaceTime call and there's Stephen butt naked in the shower, which is cute. We do it sometimes. just a cute little hello morning like I'm naked and he set the FaceTime up like the phone was on a prop and he was about to get in the shower. He's like, good morning, oh my God. And I went, oh, I locked my phone. I looked in the mirror and Tim, as I looked at Tim's eyes,
Starting point is 00:19:17 you know when a dog kind of looks at you and it's kind of like, did you see me poo? And you're like, yeah, I saw you poo but I won't talk about it. It was like that. He's like, yeah. And then he just turned around to get some pomade or something and it was mortifying. I'm sorry, but that is on Stephen.
Starting point is 00:19:29 Stephen knew you were at the hairdresser's and everyone knows what happens at a hairdresser. That's not on you. and that's not on the dress up. Not my fault, but can I go back? I didn't bring it up. He just went and got the pomade and came back and moosed me up and I left.
Starting point is 00:19:41 If you are going to FaceTime someone nude, you have to at least send them a text to say, I'm going to FaceTime you, are you alone? Like there's steps prior to the like surprise nude FaceTime. But that kills the magic, like, you know, hey, babe, NSFW nude incoming, like, oh, there's no magic in that. I've got multiple stories. Strap in, kids.
Starting point is 00:19:58 Don't you remember when Ben, my fiancé, FaceTimed me one day? We always FaceTime each other. We never do a normal call. We FaceTimed. I was about to get into the shower. So I was the answer. I answered and his entire family were on FaceTime. I was naked and he was on FaceTime.
Starting point is 00:20:17 They were driving to like their parents like grave to pay their respects. And the whole family decided Ben thought that was the perfect time to call when I was getting up and getting ready for work. So his whole family saw me nude getting into the shower. Which makes it worse because like they were all in the car. so that it was like a real captured audience and there's Brit just popping up to say hello. They got more than they bargained for on that call.
Starting point is 00:20:38 Is that the first time you'd met them? Yeah. I'd never met them. It's so ridiculous. It happens to the best of us. Surely you knew this story, Mitch. Surely like this is, it's very similar vibes. I didn't expect him to be nude.
Starting point is 00:20:50 That's the problem. When you and Matt send nudes, or do you not do it anymore now that you're married? We've been together for what, seven years now? I reckon we stopped sending nudes about three years into our relationship. Actually, when we had kids. Yeah, we stopped sending nudes after that. Well, when was the last nude you sent?
Starting point is 00:21:03 I've not sent Matt a nude in four, yeah, four and a half years probably. Why don't you do it and see what he says? Yeah, do it for the show. It just, and then we'll put it all on the pick up socials. I don't think he, I reckon he'd ignore it these days. I don't think he would. No, he would be frothing. I think he'd say, did radio set you up for this?
Starting point is 00:21:23 I think he would honestly be shocked. He wouldn't know what to do. In the break, you go to the bathroom. Horrified maybe. Take a nude, send it and we'll report back. In the fluorescent down lighting. Yeah, nothing screams hot like a white, tons of light. Like a public toilet in some fluorescent lighting.
Starting point is 00:21:40 Very excited for our next guest. He's got a brand new TV show coming to Channel 10 in a couple of days and a brand new cookbook. The one and only Global Sensation ladies, Jamie Oliver is in the studio. Hi, Jamie. I actually have a question surrounding the fact that I am surprised you got clothes on because, Jamie Oliver, I thought the naked chef meant you were naked. it yeah well it's been known once in a blue moon to happen but no it was about stripping down the
Starting point is 00:22:05 food to its bare essentials that's where the naked chef was born uh that's probably the only reason we got ratings and then everyone was very disappointed but uh or relieved should i say no thank you this is so cool to have you in here jamie oliver in the flesh um isn't it just i would say the only recipe i know like my one thing that i pull out at every single dinner party is the fish tacos with kiwi sauce. It's like sauteed kiwi sauce and that has gotten me through so many dinner affairs where people have thought that I can actually cook and I can't.
Starting point is 00:22:36 Aussie people, they'll be going like, kiwi? So good. The reason for kiwi is this. In the UK, possibly like in Aussie, it's really hard to get tomatillos. But actually it gives you that similar, really similar kind of like tangy, fresh, sharpness. It's amazing.
Starting point is 00:22:52 It's good though, isn't it? Say tomatillo again because I don't even know what that is. Tomatillo. Yeah, there you go. South American tomato. Jamie, what is your dish? If you're having a dinner party and you really want to impress, what's your go-to?
Starting point is 00:23:02 I think impress is always an interesting emotion because I think you can have the right dish with the wrong people and it's wrong, or you can have the wrong dish with the right people and it could be right. I mean, I personally always want to have as much time with my guests as possible. So something that you can, you know. Maccas.
Starting point is 00:23:24 Oh, you mean mac and cheese? No, McDonald's. McDonald's in Australia, yeah. No, no, no. No, I'd just make a burger because it's like quicker and better and juicier and cheaper. But it's really hard. Like my life is just like a jukebox of recipes. I never really know what to do until I get there.
Starting point is 00:23:41 But also, I find this amazing. You have five children. So you must have some skills in how you feed fussy kids. I've got two kids and one of them only lives on corn crackers. Yeah. Do you need anything else? Yeah. How do you get fussy kids to eat food that's a bit more interesting than corn?
Starting point is 00:23:54 just hunger just good old-fashioned hunger i mean that to be true truthful like it's interesting like um like our kids these days don't get hungry because they invented snacks there is snacks don't exist i mean snacks were always a bit of fruit or nuts or something but um it's really interesting i remembered working in south africa where they had this incredible orphanage and these three women came in and did these amazing school lunches and they just smashed a lot and they're just so grateful and then i just spent years doing it in the uk and because they're all on like crisps and sweets and like energy drinks like they don't want food they just like they just want the stuff they want so they're fussy but no i think honestly if you can yeah i
Starting point is 00:24:36 just make sure that from breakfast to lunch they don't eat um and uh yeah just cook something tasty i mean yeah they have their kind of patterns even though my kids are pretty good they love the obvious things pasta pizza yeah yeah carbs but i i try and with parents you can't don't judge yourself on the day you have to take the long game the long game and so i when they're hungry i always put out like some kind of version of a salad first sometimes you win sometimes you lose when a parent does that i remember growing up you'd be like i'm so hungry your mom would be like there's plenty of fruit in the fruit bowl it's true though no but then you say you don't want fruit and she would say you can't be hungry it's not just about the dinner like even if it's
Starting point is 00:25:16 like a grated carrot salad dress right um they'll have a nibble it doesn't matter if they smash it or not all of it or not but the thing is it's it's marketing and like when i was working with the big schools you have to put something in front of them 14 times before they try it and then it's got to taste good and then you might have another go but so kids aren't born to eat nuggets and burgers it's not genetic it's called marketing you've done some incredible work in the uk around getting food to disadvantaged kids and it's something we don't have here but it's it's for children who don't have access to it being able to come to school and have free lunches why was working and being able to provide that so important to you well i mean it's look it's
Starting point is 00:25:51 important in in aussie too but obviously it's not freezing cold and wet a lot of the year so if you kind of get poverty and freezing cold and wet um and then you have disadvantaged communities and they're trying to learn like you know hungry kids can't learn and so if if you're really passionate about the idea of the most vulnerable in our community working and thriving and kind of getting out of that and having like possibilities like a dream then um you got you know you got to feed the body and the mind and um yeah like we have 190 days of the year in the uk where we do breakfast and lunch so it might as well be good jamie i got a question i'm in a relationship tell me if this is a red flag or not okay not me being in a relationship i don't know why everyone looks
Starting point is 00:26:30 shocked when i said that but no i'm you know i'm settled down and my boyfriend eats a hamburger with a knife and fork but i'm talking if he if he even touches the bun or the or the or the patty instant hand wipe, has to clean. Is that a red flag? What does that say about someone's psychology? Do I need to run? This is not a euphemism, right? This is real.
Starting point is 00:26:49 No, no, because it's your people that invented puppetry of the penis, right? Yeah, it is true. He's really eating a hamburger. He doesn't touch my penis. I'm just trying to code out, like, what that means. Yeah, but by that logic, he gets me off with a knife and fork. Oh, see, it's getting worse. Oh, that's your fault.
Starting point is 00:27:03 You never know what happens down under. Don't ever get, Australia, never, ever get off with a knife and fork. No. Use something a bit softer and room temperature. yeah um a cheap circumcision um your publicist is out there like yeah this is great promo we'll get to the book and the tv show in about 13 minutes yeah um no what is your advice is that crazy probably like a bit ocd as he got really organized sock drawer yeah very yeah okay so he's just like slightly neurodiverse i've got one of those in my family um they like to have separation
Starting point is 00:27:32 and cleanliness they don't like the idea of bacteria and and uh yeah i mean i think this is just the start of a lot of things that's going to happen in your relationship before you know it when you come in the front door there'll be one of those sheep dipping baths and you'll go through so this is just the beginning of a long fruitful relationship it's going to be good but you'll be very hygienic okay it's good to know i'll be clean yeah all right i've got a question now jamie is it better than that last one it's sort of about my personal life but not about the sexy side You've been married to Jules, your beautiful wife, for 24 years. You've got five kids.
Starting point is 00:28:07 I feel like in this Hollywood world, that is deemed as an anomaly. Like not many people hit those marks and those milestones. Yeah. I'm getting married in six months. What advice do you have for a long, wholesome, beautiful marriage? Oh, it's so easy to say. I mean, I think. I'll take it.
Starting point is 00:28:28 It's really hard because you don't want to sound patronising. yeah and because because i think half of marriages don't work out right so um i think um don't go to bed um with a chip you know don't hold grudges yeah um you know try and sort things out before you go to bed um i think i think a really obvious one is hang around yeah and you're really a team and me and jules often say like we're at our best when we're really like in like something's gone wrong but you know i don't know it's it's gonna be up and down and that's normal i think some people think when it's not going well that that's really weird and bad but that's pretty normal standard now jamie talk to us about the new book of the new tv show because we have we have a copy
Starting point is 00:29:08 of the book uh simply jamie is out now the new tv show jamie fast and simple which beautiful looking book beautiful looking book fast and simple again i think your mind is in the gutter with that title as well that can be food but it also does sound like something else fast and simple there's a consistent pattern here i know it's always him though no there's a 14 minute pastor in there and i'm like i can't even make toast in 14 minutes so this is impressive to me yeah look basically when what my job really if you want to be a good author um is to really listen to the public listen to the things they're scared of excited about and the problems they have and the audience now is very different to 25 years ago yeah i can imagine so 25 years ago 46 minutes
Starting point is 00:29:43 average time on dinner like now it oh before covid it was 21 i think it's more like 19 now the uberization of food has never been kind of easier to get takeaway so and people are working really hard so what what i have done is i've looked at actual basket data of what people buy i want you to cook stuff from this book that you already have in your fridge so if you look in there like that you've got 10 pastas in there but they're all no cooked pasta sauces so one pot to wash up you can make the sauce like literally in the time that it takes to cook the pasta there's like 10 ways with salmon because i know you buy salmon right but you're bored of it as well so let's make it not boring you know let's you've got 10 ways with like a chicken breast but
Starting point is 00:30:20 they're cool and contemporary quick ways to cook it but also so good if you've got kids because the last thing you want to do is like having to do the big cleanup the big prep and everything else afterwards as well and no one has time for it anymore they just don't so when i'm writing before i even start getting creative i'm thinking about cost i'm thinking about washing up i'm thinking about how many ingredients and can you get the ingredients from a regular supermarket yeah and um and then veggie vegan fish and meat and having a nice spread of that and healthy and you know indulgent so at that point i haven't even written a recipe so yeah my i think my job is to give you a book that's like super user friendly and you can trust it we've all got a
Starting point is 00:30:54 bit of jamie oliver in our kitchen you can extend it now simply jamie out now and then jamie fast and simple the 15th of november 7 30 on 10 and 10 play jamie oliver it was a pleasure buddy thanks for coming on the pick up you're an absolute delight thank you
