Starting point is 00:00:00 A Life Uncut podcast acknowledges the traditional custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their elders, past and present, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today. This episode is recorded on Gavigal land of the Aurora Nation. Hi guys and welcome back to another episode of Life Uncut. It is our radio show where we package up the best of the pick up and put it all here ready and raring for you, whatever.
Starting point is 00:00:31 I'm Brittany. I'm Mitch. Laura, you're exhausted from Dancing with the Stars. What was that? Something's gone wrong. I'm so good. No, I'm done now, guys. After this, after this episode, I'll be back.
Starting point is 00:00:40 I'll be good. I'll be fresh. You'll be old Laura again. Yeah, I'll be back to the old me. But up until now, I'm still wrecked. My body, my brain, my everything hurts. Are you physically sore? Is that the problem?
Starting point is 00:00:51 Physically, emotionally and mentally, very, very sore. Spiritually, literally, metaphorically. It's taken everything from me. You guys, I know I talk about it all the time, but like it's very weird doing six to eight hours of exercise a day at something that is not familiar to your body. It's not a normal thing. I don't even think athletes train that much. But that's, I mean, like trying to get someone to learn to dance within a whole six-week period, that's what you've got to do. Also, the injuries are so bizarre.
Starting point is 00:01:17 Like I hugged Laura the other day. She had a crop top on and I thought I was rubbing my hand against like an Oraton leather bag. But Laura just has carpet burn on her ribcage. We weren't wondering what you were doing at those dance lessons. No, nothing like that. It's because Daniil has to lift me up, and so I've gotten carpet burn on my ribs, which then I have to put fake tan on because I look like a 13-year-old
Starting point is 00:01:37 that's just started doing fizzy. I've got so much fake tan, and the fake tan is like matted into my scab on the side. Anyway, I'm a hot mess. Daniil joined us, though, on the radio show this week, my lovely dance partner. Yeah, he did come in, and we asked him a couple of questions about Laura's behaviour behind the scenes, how she trains,
Starting point is 00:01:54 what her dance moves are like. If he likes Matty J, if they get along or if there's any beef between the two men. Yeah, the sexual chemistry. I think he's in love with Matty J, to be honest. I am too. I wouldn't surprise me. He didn't bring his cane, though, into radio. He brings it to dance practice.
Starting point is 00:02:05 Rightly so, to be honest. That's off. What, bringing it to the radio station? What 20-year-old carries a cane? He just brings his cane around and then he taps me in the knees when I'm not lifting him up high enough. Oh, God. Oh, my goodness.
Starting point is 00:02:15 Like piano lessons back in the day when they used to hit your knuckles with a ruler and stuff. I used to have that. I used to do karate. Mr. Kwok, I only ever got to yellow belt, but I used to talk too much and he would karate chop me in the back of the knee and I'd collapse to the ground. That is illegal.
Starting point is 00:02:26 I never got karate chopped. Yeah, that's abuse. This was early 2000s. You could do whatever you want. This is why you didn't make it past yellow belt. This is why I went to theatre school. Well, Mitch, you brought one of your friends in today too. Oh, my God, I did.
Starting point is 00:02:38 Good, close, personal friend of mine. We're actually distant relatives. Jason Derulo is on the show. He's got a new song. This is nice. You just went so radio then. It's the podcast. I know.
Starting point is 00:02:49 This is a pocket we're dropping music bits. I love that. I don't even know if we're allowed to do that from copyright reasons. You've got five seconds. That's why I cut it off. I don't want a big bill. Producer Keisha will yell at me. No, no, I forgot who my friend was.
Starting point is 00:03:01 That's why I had to vamp and fill time. Okay, I could tell what you were doing. But it's Jason Derulo. He's in Australia for The Voice. And it was actually a really good chat. It got deep. And then, oh, my God, Laura, you almost pissed him off in the first two minutes.
Starting point is 00:03:13 No, I didn't. She did. He was like, oh, I can't believe you're asking me that already. I just asked him if he's dating anyone in Australia. Didn't piss him off. He loves that shit. Anyway. He didn't answer.
Starting point is 00:03:25 No, he did answer. He deflected. Hey, we asked him a lot of questions. He deflected, but we did get a lot of juicy stuff out of him. He deflected all of the questions. Yeah, no, we got some good stuff in the end, but yeah, he was fielding us at the start. Oh, and then also we got an update on your German lessons, Britt. Yes, Ben's coming in a couple of days.
Starting point is 00:03:39 I've been practicing my German and I did have a very embarrassing mishap with it this week. You haven't improved at all. I mean, it's only been nine days, though. How much of an improvement do you expect in a week? I mean, you learn to dance in six weeks. I feel like I could learn some stuff in nine days. Have you been doing nine hours or eight hours of German practice every day? No, I've been doing about an hour.
Starting point is 00:03:56 Do your ribs hurt? Yeah. It is a guttural language. No, it's going well. But look, it's going as fast as you can go for an hour of German alone a day on a free app Babbel. But it was more about what happened this week when I tried to practice it with a German speaker. Yeah. No good.
Starting point is 00:04:13 All right, let's get into the show. Guys, I've been having some problems with my one and only love of my life, Delilah. We love Delilah. She's the shit of a dog, but she's good for you. She's very naughty, isn't she? My Australian shepherd, Delilah, she really is the love of my life. But she goes to playgroup, like kindy, when I have big days at work because she needs to be out and running.
Starting point is 00:04:37 So every day she's at kindy? No, but like for the big, big days. Not when I just have to come for like an hour or two of radio, but like when I'm out all day. So there's a couple of days a week she goes. And we would always say, like, she's quite an unruly puppy, but she's not really a puppy anymore. She's almost two.
Starting point is 00:04:50 Yeah, and we could excuse it when she was a little dog, but now she's too old for this behaviour. No, she's actually been really good, but she's regressed. So I got a call the other day, and I'm mortified. I got a call from the dog sitter, the dog walker, and she's like, I need to talk to you about Delilah. We've had her on the show before. We have, yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:07 And I was like, oh, my God, why do I think she's in trouble? She's like, it's fine, but we do need to talk about some things. So I call her and she got a really bad report card from dog school. So she has been, I was like, a parent's worst nightmare. You say that with such sincerity, like it's a real human. It is. It's a dog. Wash your mouth out.
Starting point is 00:05:27 It was a very traumatising thing to get a bad report card for your baby. What's she doing wrong? She said Delilah is forcing other dogs to play with her. She's like, other dogs make it very clear that they don't want to play and Delilah ignores them. So she doesn't have any respect for consent. She doesn't have consent for the playgroup. She headbutts them.
Starting point is 00:05:46 She runs at them like they're sheep. I bet you she bites them too. She nips at their little ankles because she's trying to herd them. She's a bully. She's a top dog, literally. She bites the lead when she walks. She doesn't listen. And I said, I apologize.
Starting point is 00:06:01 I'll talk to her about not trying to force the other dogs to play with her. But I don't know what to do. I said, is she expelled from playgroup? I can't have her expelled as a second dog walker. What happened to the first dog walker? Well, I don't know. She ghosted me. I wonder why.
Starting point is 00:06:16 She did have bruises on her ankles because she was nipped by an Australian terrier. It's an Australian shepherd. I have sent Delilah. This is the thing. I've sent Delilah to dog school. I sent her to military camp, to police school, and nothing fixed her. So I'm going to take a different tactic today. Her behavior seems to be mirroring a small, annoying toddler.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Don't call my kids annoying. Not yours. Just in general. just like as a whole i know this is pointed no the terrible twos because delilah's just turning two so it's the terrible two so i thought the dog school hasn't worked why don't i get a child specialist i'm like a child psychologist i'm going to explain the issues to the child psychologist i'm not going to tell her a dog and i'll get her advice on what she thinks the problem is because i feel like maybe the same problem in a child could be the same problem this is either the
Starting point is 00:07:04 best idea you've ever had or up there with the way i mean i kind of like this i like this approach I'm going to be able to second use any of this information on my own kids. Yeah, you're just going to milk the therapy for yourself. And I'll just be here for entertainment. Dr. Sandy Ray. So she hasn't heard any of this. We're going to patch her through now. She's a child psychologist.
Starting point is 00:07:21 She's been on before. We love Sandy. Britt, you're going to lead this as if it's a real chat to diagnose a child. Yeah. You welcome Sandy. She's your guest. Patching Sandy through now. Hi, Sandy.
Starting point is 00:07:32 Welcome to the pickup. Thank you. Hi, Sandy. Thanks so much for jumping on. Look, we do have a big problem here. We just need some quick advice, okay? We're going to set the scene for you and get your advice. Okay.
Starting point is 00:07:44 So there's a little girl, she's two years old, and she's been getting in trouble at kindy lately. There's been a really bad report card of bullying, playing too rough with others, not listening to others when they don't want to play. Like there's sort of no respect. There's been some head-butting and some biting incidents. Biting of the ankles, right?
Starting point is 00:08:06 Yeah, biting of the ankles. Um, even actually, I think the, the hands as well and the back has been quite a lot of biting, um, completely ignoring what anyone has to say, uh, behavior like you can't, I would never ever walk anywhere near a road that would run in front of the road, a hundred percent hit by a bus. So I've had to have one of those backpacks with the lead, which, you know, I did do a long time ago as a nanny, so it's fine. Um, off the food, just misbehaving, just really, really weird behavior.
Starting point is 00:08:37 And bathroom habits, right? Like go to the bathroom wherever they want. Just a regression. Yeah, you think that it's a regression. It's just a regression. We can't work it out. What could be going on? Well, two things I want to say first of all.
Starting point is 00:08:51 I've never met this child, so I'm only hypothesizing. She's not a client. And secondly, just so you don't think I'm some wacko, I'm a fellow of the College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists. Well, that's why we called in the big guns. yeah we know where to go for the facts sandy don't worry okay i just gotta clarify for legal reasons um sex don't look i think first of all it's a whole cluster of behaviors if you would have you know you could probably list 200 different behaviors going with this child if you were to
Starting point is 00:09:21 package it up what do you think what do you see is going on try and put it into one sentence well i'm also trying to help him it's there's no um father figure so i'm wondering yeah i'm I'm wondering if there's a lack of the father figure maybe, a bit of rebellion. Look, there could be a lot of issues, but I'm going to just sort of narrow it down. One of them, and the fact that you say there's no father figure, that could be one.
Starting point is 00:09:46 That could be we've got the temper of the child. We can never really prove or disprove that. It could be an absence of a father. Or it could be because of the absence of a father, the mother is overindulging the child and parenting on what I call mother guilt. Ah, I think we're onto something there. When you say overindulging the child, which kind of reinforces bad behaviour,
Starting point is 00:10:07 can you give us some examples of that? Okay, so an example would be loose boundaries is what I call it. Yes, right. And loose boundaries means, and going back one step before I talk about boundaries, is it's terribly, terribly important for a child to be able to trust the main caregiver in their life. Yeah, so would you say overindulging? No, no, no, not quite overindulgent.
Starting point is 00:10:31 So imagine, and this is what I say to a lot of my parents, imagine you are a two-metre mirror in cement in the middle of your family room. Whenever that child has an issue, concerns about peer group pressure, drinking, sex, smoking, doing antisocial behaviour and stuff from day one, they come to that mirror and that's their reflection. if the mirror is on the roof one day it's in the toilet another day if the mirror is out in the backyard the child is scrambling to say where do i get my sense of self from where do i understand where i fit so dr sandy would you say that um cooking every single meal for a child in an air
Starting point is 00:11:14 fryer um would be an overindulgence or just pure no i wouldn't i wouldn't even consider that Ah, interesting. It's more important, much more substantial things about relationship development. Do you think it also comes down, so you're saying like an inconsistency? Well, not so much inconsistency, but more of an indulgence. I think probably like too much love, too much love.
Starting point is 00:11:39 Well, I'm a bit even hesitant about saying too much love. It's almost being afraid to set boundaries. But if bedtime is 7 o'clock, bedtime is 7 o'clock. Oh, no, she sleeps where she wants and she does what she wants and she eats what she wants. Actually, the only other thing, Sandy, is the big thing is she refuses, like she's completely gone off it, but she refuses to take her flea and tick medication.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Okay. Dr Sandy. I think we've got bigger issues to deal with rather than flea and tick medication. No, Dr. Sandy, it's my dog Delilah. Oh, stop it. Stop it. I want to say something.
Starting point is 00:12:30 Sandy, you hit the nail on the head. Britt has zero boundaries when it comes to her dog. Delilah runs the absolute roost of that house. And that's why I think consistency and trust, everything I've just talked about, absolutely applies to the dog. I mean, you're an incredible child psychologist, but if you ever want a pivoting career, you're a great dog psychologist too, Sandy. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:12:53 I'm still going with the missing father figure, Sandy. Oh, that's so good. Dr. Sandy Ray, thank you so much. So the root of the problem is not the dog walkers. It's not the kindy. It's the mum, Brittany Hockley. It's not the salmon. It's not the air fryer.
Starting point is 00:13:10 It's the overindulgence. All right, get out of here. It's you. You're the problem. It's you. Me. I'm the problem. It's me.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Clearly. Laura, I'm so excited for this. You're doing Dancing With The Stars, as we know. Yes, and I've been spending a lot of my time with a man in my life, and it's not Matty J. It is Danil. He is my Russian, I do like to call him my drill sergeant teacher, but he's here and he's joining us.
Starting point is 00:13:35 Danil! Here is my dance teacher. Danil, what is your last name, to be clear? Savelli-Ev. Laura just tried to introduce you as Danil Slovakia. And I was like, he's Russian and I don't think that's his name. I thought you were Danil Suvlaki for so long as Laura kept butchering it. I don't mind a bit of a Suvlaki, but it's pronounced Suvelev.
Starting point is 00:13:53 Suvelev. Suvelev, so very common name. Danil Suvelev. Let's just go with Danil. You and Laura dancing together on Dancing With The Stars. We can't wait to see it on Channel 7 soon. But in case you missed it, we were talking about you on the show the other day, and this is how Laura described the chemistry,
Starting point is 00:14:10 the palpable, red-hot chemistry that you two have on the D floor. My partner, I mean, bless him, he's probably going to hate that I say it, but, like, there's nothing. I have more sexual chemistry for, like, a blanket. With me? I have more sexual chemistry with you, Mitch. Wow. That sounds so mean when you play it back.
Starting point is 00:14:27 That we have no sexual chemistry. But Daniil might have thought you had sexual chemistry. How do you think we have sexual chemistry, Daniil? Look, I'll just say no. Oh, wait, you're just saying no. Oh, God. No, but it was all there. Obviously, I can't reveal too much.
Starting point is 00:14:42 but we have oh what do you mean Danille what do you mean why are you trying to get me in trouble Danille
Starting point is 00:14:47 what are you doing wow exclusive here at the pick up congrats guys we had great dance chemistry does that count
Starting point is 00:14:54 yes but sexual chemistry is a different thing is it what why do you not have sexual chemistry with Danille is that what you're saying
Starting point is 00:14:59 I don't think I have sexual chemistry with anyone anymore except for Matt Danille in all seriousness how do you feel hearing that
Starting point is 00:15:05 did that like hurt your feelings a little bit to know that Laura didn't Laura had more chemistry with Mitch and he's gay
Starting point is 00:15:12 Okay. I'll have you know I do very well. Thank you very much. I'm pretty comfortable with myself. Also, Danil's doing fine with the ladies. I've had all the updates. He's doing just fine. How do you think I've been as a dance partner, though?
Starting point is 00:15:26 I'm very stubborn. You're a bit of a psycho when it comes to training. In a good way or a bad way? In a very good way. Positive way, though. Positive way. How? It's crazy.
Starting point is 00:15:38 I think she's the one that's taught me how to dance on my feet for six hours. I've only been used to two-hour bursts, and that's normally how we structure a lesson. Definitely a private, and obviously with the intense training, trying to bring a beginner up from scratch, not knowing anything to performing on a dance floor. We've had to train for about six hours, and she's just crazy. So you're saying that Laura is so neurotic that she taught you how to teach her? Pretty much. Wow.
Starting point is 00:16:04 Do you know, every day, six hours a day, it's so much. We've not had a day off in weeks. and every day I'd be like, we've got to do it again. We're going again. And Daniil would say to me, Laura, I know how to dance. You need to do it again. This is you learning how to dance. I don't need to do that.
Starting point is 00:16:19 So can you do it on your own? Do you ever just sit back and just watch Laura do the moves? Oh, never. No, you can't. She goes, Daniil, Daniil, I can't do this. I can't do this by myself. I need you. I need you right now.
Starting point is 00:16:29 I need you to help me. And I'm like, okay. And she thinks there's no chemistry. She needs you. I can't do it on my own. It's so hard, especially when you're doing partner dancing and you've got to try and learn the steps because you're almost mirroring what the other person's doing.
Starting point is 00:16:41 So you're kind of copying them and that's how. And I'm a creature of habit and repetition. It's the only way I learn stuff. Danil, how would you rate Laura's skills when she first started and be fully honest and then where she's at now? Look, from a step perspective, Laura's really good at learning patterns and I've said this from the beginning. I've probably said it behind the camera, not to her,
Starting point is 00:17:02 because I'm not good at giving compliments. Now's the time. If you're going to do it, do it now, please. I'll do it now. Don't worry. So with Laura, she just picks up the steps really well and I was actually genuinely, genuinely surprised by the way you learnt the jive.
Starting point is 00:17:17 You learnt how to do your kicks. Obviously there's a couple, there was some difficult steps that we couldn't do. I can tell you now she can't turn at all. I have no balance. Oh, you're like Zoolander, like can't turn left. What do you mean you can't turn? I just spin and then most people stop.
Starting point is 00:17:35 On the spot. And I keep going. My long little bambi arms and everything just keep moving. And my head, yeah, spinning is really hard. You mean your elbows are still. My God. Yeah, we did see a video that was going pretty viral around the old Instagram of Laura knocking you out
Starting point is 00:17:50 with her elbow in one of the rehearsals. I did hit Daniil in the eye socket with my elbow, but I think it was a bit of a soccer play. I think you threw yourself down on the ground. You're like, referee, I'm injured, flapping around on the ground. You heard your elbow connect with the desk. It hit the bone.
Starting point is 00:18:07 It hit the bone. Laura, I don't think you can downplay that. Hold on, Danille, was it your right eye? It was this eye. I can see it. It's Bruce. I'm serious. It is Bruce.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Thank you. Danille, I'm going to hand you a private number that you need to call after. If something's going on with Laura, back end, we can talk. Okay, what you guys didn't see is that Danille dropped me on my head twice. Twice. We're going to talk about that. Twice, Danille. But once was actually in rehearsals at Dancing With The Stars.
Starting point is 00:18:34 We were on the dance floor. We were doing our one creative run through. And during our creative run through, I felt this thock straight into the, I think it was the ground, but you said it was your knee. No, it was definitely my knee, unfortunately. Oh, you too. Okay, so, Daniil, how has your relationship been with Matty J, obviously Laura's beloved husband?
Starting point is 00:18:51 He's been on the show before. Has there been any tension with you two? It's no tension at all. It's actually beautiful. You should see one of our packages I actually brought in for one episode. So we had a bit of a sexual chemistry going on there, which was great. So a threesome is what's going to happen. Oh, I get it.
Starting point is 00:19:10 So Brick, instead of one-on-one. The sexual chemistry isn't about me and Danil. It's about Danil and Matt. That is the true love story of this season. And most people have to, you know, most people have the concern that maybe it's the dance partner and the dancer getting it on, but no, it's my husband. Now, that'll send Daryl Summers to the grave.
Starting point is 00:19:29 That will really rock him to his core. I'll not know what to do with that bad boy, will I? Wow. So, okay, so overall you're impressed with Laura. And I will speak on behalf of Britt and I. We are so proud of Laura. She has committed to this genuinely. She's put so much time into it.
Starting point is 00:19:42 I mean, I feel like I've had a friendship with Billy Elliot for the last couple of months. I'm like, Laura, do you want to get lunch? She goes, I've got to dance. I'm dancing. I can't. I must dance. She dances to the toilet.
Starting point is 00:19:51 She dances to the shop. She dances to bed. Where are my children? I've been too busy dancing. I haven't seen them in weeks. Yes. Yeah, I know. We are so proud of you, seriously, Laura.
Starting point is 00:20:00 And we really do think you're going to kill it. I hope so as well. I do. I've seen some little snippets of both of you. It looks wonderful. It looks sexy. If there is no chemistry, you fooled me. That's for sure.
Starting point is 00:20:11 We're very good actors. We are. We're doing great. Daniil is a very good teacher. Daniil, this was your first touch with reality TV. You haven't really done anything like this before, have you? No. Well, how did you find yourself in this position?
Starting point is 00:20:24 because you're a real estate agent by day and dancer on the stars by night. I know. It was definitely tough. Obviously, we both had pretty tough schedules and we both made it work and it was definitely a hell of an experience. I guess the most important thing, especially with the show, is just the relationships that you get to build with your partner. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:43 You know, from being nobody. Wouldn't you say the important thing is the school? It's all about the journey, Bryn. It's about the journey. It's not about who wins. Oh, stop it. We all want you to win. You've got to win.
Starting point is 00:20:56 The journey. We want you to bring back the trophy. Don't come back to work if you don't have the mirror ball. Listen, ladies. You know I love finding ridiculous news stories and bringing them to you? Yes, we do. We're well aware. You're across it, are you?
Starting point is 00:21:10 What have you done? Okay, it has been revealed Australia's rudest road trip spots. So you know Australia. We love a ridiculous town name. Kootenai Barabran. We do have some silly ones. Toowoomba. We have some Toowoomba.
Starting point is 00:21:21 I mean, they get worse. So someone has put together, if you want to go on a really cheeky, rude road trip, you can go through all these horrific, rude, cheeky town names and it's a rude, naughty little road trip. Someone has too much time on their hands. I wonder if these places are actually like aesthetic tourist places or you're just going to them because they've got terrible names. Nah, you've got to take a photo of the sign.
Starting point is 00:21:40 Yes, that's exactly what you want. You want the Instagram. And people are profiting off this. Stress-free car rental have compiled the weirdest road trip locations and they're going, go on this road trip and they're like selling it. Isn't that smart? That is great. Yes, sure.
Starting point is 00:21:54 But where are they and what are they? I'm going to give you some and you have to work out whether or not it's a real Aussie town or a fake rude Aussie town. There's some really silly named towns out there. Oh, yeah. And I think it's worth noting, this stat's very important, this was in the article, the average Australian drops an expletive, like a rude word, around seven times a day
Starting point is 00:22:14 and allegedly 29% of South Australians swear more than 16 times per day. Oh, I reckon I swear quite a bit. Isn't that wild? It's very hard doing a radio show. I have to keep it under wraps. Well, yeah, you're a potty mouth. And kids.
Starting point is 00:22:25 I've got kids, so I have to be very careful. Why can't I swear that? I go through phases. Depends who I hang out with. You know when you're a product of your environment? If I'm around someone that swears like a trooper, I'll start to swear. If I'm around an accent, I take on the accent. Okay, here are some of the towns.
Starting point is 00:22:39 Real or fake? You be the judges. Tinkle Creek in Gold's Country, Tasmania. That sounds real. That sounds like, you know, there's a Lake Titicaca out there somewhere in the world, so Tinkle Creek doesn't sound too far. Tinkle Creek's real. It's in Tasmania.
Starting point is 00:22:51 What about Dunny Drip Stream? Dunny Drip Stream. I don't want to go swimming in it, but I reckon it's, I think it's real, but I won't swim in that one. Dunny Drip Creek, fake. Doesn't exist. I made it up. Okay, what about this?
Starting point is 00:23:05 Driving through the warm, warm waters of Funny Knob Creek. No, it's fake. I'm going real. Funny Knob Creek in Tasmania. What do you want to walk in? No, it's not real. It's real. Yes!
Starting point is 00:23:17 Funny Knob Creek, everybody. That's a bit of, no one wants to be called Funny Knob. Staying in Tasmania, you get in your Volkswagen camper van, you drive down the road, you get to Pisspot Creek. True or false? No, I think Pisspot Creek is real. I'm going false. We risked up every one.
Starting point is 00:23:32 I know. I feel like we have to come to some sort of uniform decision on this. Pisspot Creek's a beautiful place to relax. It's bloody real. Pisspot Creek. I want to see a photo of these places. The water is brown. Yeah, like tea leaf colour.
Starting point is 00:23:46 Well, you actually grew up close to this place, Britt. This was our Bust My Balls Bay. Stop it. I actually grew up not far from there, yeah. Bust My Balls Bay. It's a beautiful bay. You need Paul McQuarrie. Bust My Balls.
Starting point is 00:23:58 That's fake. I'm mad at that. Stop it. Oh, but you, didn't you, you got married at Lake Fanny Track, right? Lake Fanny Track. Lake Fanny Track and the Central Plateau in Tasmania. It's really pretty down there at Lake Fanny Track. I reckon it's real.
Starting point is 00:24:14 It's a smelly place, though. It's real. It's real. It's real. Not smelly. Mitch, yuck. Sorry. What about butt clacker spring?
Starting point is 00:24:22 Stop it. That's funny. I made that up. Last one. Last one. You're on a road trip around Australia. You pull up at Root Rat Road. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:24:35 And that's where all of the young 20-year-olds who are trying to escape their parents' houses are sitting in their cars making out. That's Root Rat Road. Root Rat Road comes down to Dunny Drip Creek, doesn't it? Yeah, they're connected. Okay, I think it's real. Fake. It's fake.
Starting point is 00:24:51 I'm terrible at this game. Rit Rat Road doesn't exist, but you come by my house on a weekend. Let me tell you, that's Rit Rat Road. Mitch. I feel like I've never heard anything more untrue in my life. No, it's so untrue. That is untrue. Oh, listen, if you want to go on a little road trip, yeah,
Starting point is 00:25:04 go on to Stress-Free Car Rentals and have a look because they'll set it up for you. Sounds fun. Sounds sexy. Listen, our next guest is a superstar. He has got hundreds of millions of followers, streams, listens. He is a pop sensation. He's also taking over The Voice. He's a new judge on The Voice, coming soon to Channel 7 and 7 Plus.
Starting point is 00:25:22 Ladies, it is Jason Derulo. Hey there. Hi. Jason, welcome to Australia. We're so stoked to have you. First off, how are you finding Australia and how are you finding the coffee? Because that seems to be a really big thing that people talk about in Australia. Rita Ora came on.
Starting point is 00:25:40 She said she's completely changed her coffee order. Yeah, it's strong. You know, I've got to agree with you on that one. First off, you know, Australia is one of my favorite places on the planet. I want to get that out. You know, that was a huge part of me coming to do the show here because, you know, obviously I've got to spend a lot of time here. But yeah, it's been it's been a long time since I've been here. But now I get some like real decent time.
Starting point is 00:26:07 And and it's kind of like a like a stay home vacation for me because, you know, I just I just love the people here so much. In this country, like, we love a singing competition. So good. But the voice is the best we've got. It's really up there. So have you practiced sitting on that chair? I'd get vertigo sitting on that thing because that thing spins right around so you can see the contestants.
Starting point is 00:26:27 Have you had to do rehearsals on that? No, but I actually had Rita give me a tutorial on how to utilize the chair. I'm actually hilarious. What was the tutorial? How did it work? She showed me, like, where the massage button is and where, like, if I get cold, like, the heating is. Is that real?
Starting point is 00:26:49 No. Jason, your chair's better than my car. A mic comes out of the bottom, like, the ejector button. Okay. Where are you guys at with the filming of it so far? I don't know if I'm allowed to answer that. Okay, answer this. Have you come across some huge, amazing new talent?
Starting point is 00:27:11 Do you think something incredible is going to come out of this season? You can say that. I genuinely feel that way. There has been some unbelievable talent on the show, and I had high hopes before I came, but my jaw has been to the ground like over and over and over again. The talent here is pretty crazy, and they've been saying how this has been the best season in terms of the talent thus far.
Starting point is 00:27:37 And, you know, I got to say, I believe that. The talent has just been insane. So, yeah, I do think that there is a superstar within this bunch of. Wow. Wow. Well, listen, I mean, you are a bonafide superstar. We know and love you. You're a new one.
Starting point is 00:27:53 Glad you came. I mean, we were just jamming out, weren't we? It's so good. We were just jamming out to it. Now, what's this about? Is this about finding love, especially in a club we're here? Because I've never found love in a club. I've just found genital warts.
Starting point is 00:28:04 Oh, my God, Mitch. over overpriced drinks and i can only find on the dating apps who actually meets in the wild at the clubs now jason is this still a thing yeah i don't know uh but the song but the song is like it you know it talks about the power of destiny because you know um if you're not in the right place at the right time what if you know the person that you're supposed to be with goes to the club but you never go you know um so the power of destiny and being in the right place at the right time i think is is um really important a song is also like really nostalgic and kind of reminds me of a different era of era of music yeah uh so it's definitely one of my favorite
Starting point is 00:28:44 jason something like a serious turn for a second you've written a book sing your name out loud 15 rules for living your dream can you give us a little taste test of one of the 15 rules yeah so i mean obviously i've been through so much in my life and um i've you know uh done done some things that not not are necessarily the things that i dreamed about as a kid right so obviously social media didn't exist the way that it does now um but i utilized those same specific rules that i had you know in the beginning and um applied it to that also applied the rules to my businesses um and i have uh 13 flourishing businesses and have just just had these incredible different lives, utilizing the same thing. So I was like,
Starting point is 00:29:34 I just got to write this book. So one of the rules are the power of the tongue, you know, and talking about how important the words that you say are. When I was a kid, certain things that I would say and do came off as almost cocky because I believed in my heart of hearts so much that I would become the person that I am today. And when I spoke to people, they took it as if I was just being cocky, but no, no, no. I believed it because I started to speak it. And once you tell the trillion cells in your body the same thing over and over daily, it starts to believe it and you know the journey started when my mom switched the way that she spoke um and i gotta say she was the brain child behind it because she switched simple things like instead of saying
Starting point is 00:30:31 this cheesecake is to die for she would say this cheesecake is to live for you know changing those oh that's a good one i like that is the same idea of like manifestation like is this something that you think has really helped you in your career 100 but it's taking manifestation to an entirely different stratosphere because it's not just saying the words, but like truly get into a place where you believe it and your body and your routine starts to change because you have to live as if you're that person or that person in training. Wow. I love that. You're one of the biggest TikTok stars. I mean, the 11th most followed person on all of TikTok. How do you find that using tiktok changed your career path and also has changed in terms of like the way that
Starting point is 00:31:22 you approach your music definitely hasn't changed the way i approach music because people are just going to feel songs or they're not going to feel a song um and people are going to utilize a sound a song on tiktok that they feel in some to some degree right so you can't force a trend you know it's just never gonna happen you can't like like write a song for tiktok is this that just doesn't exist people will go as far as you know finding music from the 70s before they use your your whack new song so um you know you have to really just create music that touches people in some way you know make them feel something um but tiktok has changed changed the world honestly not the music industry but um for me you know it started off as something that i felt like was
Starting point is 00:32:14 next you know so i put time and energy into it during the pandemic i had a lot of time and energy during the pandemic i was posting six tiktoks a day and at one point wow billions uh billion hits um per month wow over a month on my because i was posting what i was posting crazy um and uh you know is it's just opened up an entirely new world you know and i'm able to do um like really big like brand partnerships and stuff like that and um because you know there's so many eyeballs on tiktok you know and if you if you're trying to do an ad you're paying for the super bowl and the super bowl has 40 million viewers i mean i got tiktoks i got 150 200 million jason i just got a TikTok. I've only got about six
Starting point is 00:33:03 TikToks, but I feel like it'd do me good if you gave me a follow. Give a shout out. I want to do a collaborator pose. I just started. Maybe we do a duet. That's Instagram. She doesn't know what she's doing. Also, when she says
Starting point is 00:33:19 TikTok, she's got a wristwatch. She's got no idea what she's talking about, Jason. Not even the app. I need some help. What I love, Jason, is that your son has his own Instagram page. Also, Jason, He has almost 200,000 Instagram followers. Is that just you wanted to set him up for success because you identified
Starting point is 00:33:37 that this is the future? Why did you create a page for your son? His mom is really good at social media. She's just really good at capturing moments in general. Jenna, she is like guru. So she'll just like send me like random videos and I'll be like, dang, you caught that moment? She's just ready
Starting point is 00:34:01 I feel like that's just a woman these days I think we're all pretty good at that We just almost caught Mitch O'Dean His pen, just before you jumped on Jason Mitch had a pen in his mouth The pen exploded in his mouth His mouth was full of ink and we thought it was going to pass away I was so excited to talk to you, I was chewing on my pen
Starting point is 00:34:17 And then it exploded and they're like, Jason's joining the Zoom I'm like spitting out ink We captured the moment, my point is I feel like women are on the edge, we've always got our phone ready For the really good content Ready for the next moment that's crazy so what's next for you musically i guess are you are you looking for a body of work you're going to put an album out are you going to do an ep uh yeah so i'm actually doing an album
Starting point is 00:34:39 um so i'm actually working on it here uh while i'm uh in australia putting the finishing touches to it um it's going to be an experiential album i can't tell you exactly what that means as of yet but um i think um and hope that it changes the way people listen to albums i think people need something exciting and new in terms of albums because um streaming has just it's it's changed everything yeah so uh this experience uh i think will bring people back to uh you know listening to a full body of work yeah and you'll understand what i what i mean when when you know what i'm talking about well i've signed back up to school guys i am revisiting my education oh what are you studying? German.
Starting point is 00:35:26 Okay. Didn't think that one was coming, did you? German history, like the World Wars? No, I'm trying to learn another language. I'm trying to learn German, which I mean, I only know two languages, English and Australian, but I think German is
Starting point is 00:35:41 probably the hardest language. It's a real guttural type of language, isn't it? It's not a sexy language. Like, ich bin heiß und bit ne hockney. Yes, that's exactly it. What did you Sauerkraut. Sauerkraut. Sausage.
Starting point is 00:35:55 Sausage. Okay, how is the learning going so far? Have you signed up for a university degree? How are you learning this? Big question, why? Why are you doing this? Because of my, I mean, it shows how well you guys know me. My boyfriend is German.
Starting point is 00:36:11 His name's Ben. No, we learned this the other day. It's Benjamin. Benjamin. You're right. No, it's not. It's Benjamin. And also, I just made a mistake.
Starting point is 00:36:20 My boyfriend is not German. He's Swiss, but he speaks German. He speaks Swiss German. No one really knows if he even exists. He's probably made up. I think he's an AI boyfriend. Same. I haven't actually met him yet, but I'm pretty sure he's real.
Starting point is 00:36:35 British can end up on that TV show. Catfish? No, my boyfriend, Ben, is Swiss, but they speak German. So he's coming here in a few weeks, and I thought it would be nice if I made some effort and tried to learn German so that he got here and I could surprise him. But I'm just doing it on an app. I've downloaded an app and every time I go for my walk with Delilah,
Starting point is 00:36:55 I put it in and I'm like, I'm going to educate myself. It is so hard. How long have you been doing this for? Three days. In three days, how many words? Can you say a sentence in German? Ja. That's not a sentence.
Starting point is 00:37:09 That's a word. I was starting the sentence, Lauren. Oh. Okay. Ja. Hallo. So you've said, yes, hallo. Ja.
Starting point is 00:37:18 Hallo. Ja. Danke schatze. Lassie's quitsie. What does that mean? That said, yes, hello. Thank you, sweetheart. That was yum.
Starting point is 00:37:29 You idiot. Are you using like a Duolingo app or one of those sort of like babble? It's the babble app, but I'm only on a seven-day free trial. What's going to happen after seven days? I have to pay for it. You've got to cram in. I don't think you're going to be fluent by that time. But listen to, okay, listen to this.
Starting point is 00:37:46 Get it up. This is what it's like. Yeah. I don't think he... My name is Brittany. Yeah. I don't think that Ben's going to... He may find this endearing, but he won't understand you.
Starting point is 00:38:13 Well, I hope he cooks for me because all I can say so far is thank you, sweetie, that was yum. So he better cook something because that's all I got. So funny. We'll get an update on the German, please, Britt. Yeah, but let's do an update in 2024. Okay. Britt, you've got an update for us.
Starting point is 00:38:29 We're nine days in. I'm learning German, guys. I mean, I'm going to use the term learning very loosely. Anyway, I was on Zoom last night with Benjamin and his friend that was staying with him from Switzerland. Now, he doesn't speak English. So I was like, it's my first time meeting him. I'm really going to impress him. Perfect opportunity to bless the German muscle.
Starting point is 00:38:51 So I'd cleared the throat and I had gone through it in my head and I really wanted to impress him because you want to impress the friends, right? Yeah. So I hit him with this. Oh, no. Ich will dis Kursan Susi. I just don't feel like you're saying it the way it should be said.
Starting point is 00:39:09 I don't think I am. What does that mean? Say it again. Ich will dis Kursan Susi. Ich will dis Kursan Susi. Yeah, you need to be more aggressive. Can you please just try it again and channel more anger? Go.
Starting point is 00:39:21 Es will... Es will discourse en souci. That's German. Okay, that sounded more German. What I said is like, hello, nice to meet you. How are you? Okay, sure. Okay, he burst into laughter and it got very awkward.
Starting point is 00:39:36 But that's all the German I knew. So I had to wait for Ben to come back because I was just looking at this guy laughing at me. He was laughing at me very uncomfortable and it was a very awkward silence. Ben comes back and I'm like, I don't understand what's happened, Ben. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:39:48 And he's like, tell me. And I was like, well, I just said, hello, how are you? And this other guy's friend is laughing. Anyway, I said the wrong sentence. I used the only other sentence I know, which is I want to kiss you, sweetheart. How many sentences do you know? Hello, how are you? And I want to kiss you, sweetheart.
Starting point is 00:40:07 I know. No, I know. Hello, how are you? I know. I want to kiss you, sweetheart. And I know how to say thank you. That was delicious. Do you say that straight after you say thank you?
Starting point is 00:40:16 I want to kiss you, sweetheart. Well, you can use that at multiple different times. Food. Anyway, so I'd hit on his friend without him knowing and his friend couldn't speak English back to me so his friend was very uncomfortable thinking I was hitting on Ben when Ben wasn't there. That's so cool.
Starting point is 00:40:30 So that's my update for how my German's going. I don't think he would have thought you were hitting on him. I just think he would have thought you were terrible at German. This is what I was supposed to say. Hallo, wie geht es dir? Schon dich kennen, Suleyman. That sounds very convoluted for hello, how are you? It is.
Starting point is 00:40:45 It's the worst language in English. It sounds like a lot of words to get to know. I'd love to know what other people have learnt, things they've picked up to impress their partner or for the benefit of their partner. Because let's be real, Ben gets here in 10 days. It's just Benjamin with a silent J. It's just Benjamin.
Starting point is 00:41:03 You're doing this just for him, to be honest. I'm not doing an order of German sausage. Yes, I'm just doing it for Ben. Krish, what did you learn from your partner? Hi, guys. I just want to say huge fan. So lovely to talk to you all. So nice to talk to you, Krish.
Starting point is 00:41:15 to Britt and Mitch on their awards the other night. But anyway. So cute. Oh, thank you. I just wanted to say I've been married for a really long time and I've done a lot of things to impress my partner. He's a bit of a sporty guy and I am so very unco. But I have learned how to go play baseball.
Starting point is 00:41:33 I've learned how to play tennis. I've learned how to play squash. And now we're learning how to play golf. So I'm shit at all of it. I'm shit at all of it. But he just wants a partner to play with. and that's lovely and that, you know, I just try. That's all I can do.
Starting point is 00:41:49 Do you fake the interest? Does he think you're genuinely interested in it or are you just saying, look, I'll come and do it for you? Yes, pretty much. I say I'll come and do it with you. And he knows I'm shit so he loves me for that. Usually people only fake in the beginning of a relationship but you've really continued this throughout.
Starting point is 00:42:06 You really kept the game up. I love to be with him so, you know. This is so sweet. Chris, how long have you been married? 33 years this year. And do you put it down to your athletic ability? Definitely not. I've even broken a couple of bones just by tripping over.
Starting point is 00:42:25 Oh, Chris. Oh, my God. You should just learn a language, though. That's so good. Okay, Laura, another Laura. What did you learn for your partner? I learned the fine art of parkour. Oh, parkour.
Starting point is 00:42:39 I love parkour. So you jump from building to building. Why were you doing this? I wasn't doing it great, that's for sure. But I attempted to learn, yeah. Parkour is something like 14-year-old boys do. They jump from like building to building and like car to parkour. Were you good at it, Laura?
Starting point is 00:43:01 No, I was terrible. I was like, you know, so bad that I pretty much fractured both of my shins. Because usually you need to be a bit of like an acrobat. You do backflips and stuff. It's not something you just pick up on a Sunday afternoon. That's ridiculous. No, absolutely not. And I just did not have the ability.
Starting point is 00:43:18 I tried my hardest, but, yeah. So this guy you were dating, was he like, hey, I really think you should come and do parkour with me? And you were like, that sounds fun. Absolutely. He would do it. He looked amazing. And I was like, yeah, cool.
Starting point is 00:43:32 And we went on to even open up a parkour school, but I was absolutely rubbish. I hope you're not teaching. You're telling people what not to do in parkour. This has gone way too far. Okay, moral of the story, Benjamin and Britt are going to open a German sausage making school.
