Starting point is 00:00:00 A Life Uncut podcast acknowledges the traditional custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their elders, past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today. This episode is recorded on Gadigal land of the Aurora Nation. Hi guys and welcome back to another episode of Life Uncut. I'm Laura. I'm Brittany. I'm Mitch. And this is the radio show, The Pickup, where we package up all the best bits of the week
Starting point is 00:00:32 and we put it here for you to listen to. Let's just get this over and done with because he's going to do it anyway. It's Mitch's birthday tomorrow. Do you know what? Happy birthday. Oh, don't make surprises, girls. Happy birthday. And also, Britt, you said that with such lack of enthusiasm, but the only reason for that
Starting point is 00:00:47 is, and I will defend Britt, is because we have heard about the impending birthday every single day this week, but it's always followed up by, I don't really celebrate my birthday. I don't even like birthdays. Should I even do anything? Hey, guys, it's my birthday in 27 days. But I don't even like birthdays, so don't worry about it. I'll do nothing. Then he waits until the last minute when he knows we're busy and away
Starting point is 00:01:08 and goes, do you guys want to do a birthday dinner? And then I'm like, I'm so sorry I'm away. He's like, you don't even love me. You're a victim. Yeah. I want your audience to cancel you. That's bullying. I know they will.
Starting point is 00:01:19 It is. Mitch is lush. They're progressive. I'm gay, audience. Just remember that. Bullying a gay man. Oh, shut up, Mitch. Not for being gay.
Starting point is 00:01:27 Well, what else for? See? No answer. But gaslighting is around your birthday. We're so busy down at House de Mewa. Chant-a-mer. Chant-a-mer. I think it's chant-mer.
Starting point is 00:01:37 I'm not French. I don't know. I would like to take one minute, only one, nothing longer. It's your podcast. To say, Mitch, happy 29th birthday. We love you. We adore you. And we don't pay you out because you're gay.
Starting point is 00:01:51 So thank you so much for saying that. Tomorrow is my birthday. It's tomorrow. We love you. We love you. Do you remember your 29th or like the last year of your 20s? Because it is a little daunting. It's like prehistoric for me.
Starting point is 00:02:01 It is. No, what? Eight, nine years ago? Seven. Nine years for me. Yeah. Do you remember it? It's scary.
Starting point is 00:02:08 I can genuinely hand on heart say some of the best years of my life have been from 30 on. And I feel like a lot of people have it in their head that 30 is this milestone where everything goes downhill. It gets so much better. But you know what's interesting about that, Britt, is like every single person we've ever interviewed on the podcast and spoken to who speaks about the generation that they're in every single person says that the year the the decade that they're in is the best decade that they've ever had like whether the person we're interviewing is 40 or 50 like yeah we've never
Starting point is 00:02:36 had someone say oh you know what my best years were my 20s oh no my 20s were lit my 20s were lit but they were also just such a shit show of not being sure about who I was they were a real year like 10 years of self-discovery and my 30s kind of felt like not you know not 31 32 but like now it feels like i know exactly what i want in life i feel really confident in who i am as a person my 30s i agree with you brit have been the best years of my life and i am excited for that for you mitch i reckon i've had a glow up yeah you have my 30s now than my 20s and i saw a photo of you when you okay mate it's like a missing person like there was something going on with your eyes because i was traveling for three years and in backpacker hostels around the world i i
Starting point is 00:03:16 didn't wear shoes i didn't eat well i was partying i was like i was living on very little income for a very long time in some very questionable places and i think that showed through my face well now you are looking better thank you gee from the heart wow laura yeah that was like the reclaimed okay let's move on also close your eyes happy birthday mitch it's gonna get better for you not that it's bad i'm actually the happiest i've been in my whole life you just said you're sad Mate, we cannot win with you. All I want for my birthday is at Mitch Turi, follow me on Instagram. That's all I want.
Starting point is 00:03:51 Please. Give him a follow. Throw the guy a bone. Chant Demers has more followers than I do. I almost had to have a sit down after I saw that. Chant Demers, your house. Laura's house has more followers than I do. That is actually accurate.
Starting point is 00:04:02 So sad. And it's a run-down house. It's not even a nice house. It's also going to have a glop, though, guys. Is it? Anyway. You're going to lose 40 kilos, too. Stop it.
Starting point is 00:04:11 And coming up on this week's show, I spoke about how I cheated in my HSC and I'm not proud of it. I'm not ashamed of it. It's been so long that I don't really care, to be honest, anymore. But I did. I did a little bit of a cheaty cheat and the moral of the story is that it never pays to cheat. Put it that way.
Starting point is 00:04:27 You guys might have seen that Ben and I have been trying to learn our first dance, which is a disaster because we don't live together. But Mitch and Laura sprung me with, they sent my video to, like, the Dancing King, Todd McKinney, who is one of the hosts on Dancing with the Stars, who gave a pretty brutal critiquing. To give an honest review. It was to help you because we love you. Yeah, I don't think that's what it was.
Starting point is 00:04:50 It was very honest. I think you wanted to kick a girl while she was down. No, no, I didn't kick you. I wanted to. I also discussed the fact that it's been one year since I met my boyfriend, Stephen. We celebrated our one-year anniversary. However, it wasn't actually our one-year anniversary.
Starting point is 00:05:05 It was a fake-iversary. It was a fake-iversary, it was. So all that and more on the show. Enjoy. I feel like it's that time of year, the end of the year, where all the students at school and all the university students sit their final exams. You know, the HSC and moving on to the next university year.
Starting point is 00:05:21 There is a teacher that has come up with an ingenious idea. He's a professor. What he has done is decided to try and catch out cheaters. He's had enough. So he's created this exam with a fake question. Like he's made up the question. then he's created a website like he's gone to great lengths he's created a website where he's posted the question then he's posted a fake solution to it now he knows that this website
Starting point is 00:05:48 is like a go-to website for students to to try and find answers right so he's he's planted the seed like a year in advance he puts the question the fake question into the exam to see how many people would write down the impossible answer that he created. By Googling it, going to the site. By going to the site, Googling the question, they're going to get a fake answer and then they wrote it down. Out of 99 students that sat the exam, 14 students wrote down his fake exam. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:22 Okay. I think that there are a lot of people out there who back in the day would have cheated the old school way. And I have a confession to make. Go Laura. Hold space for me, everyone. Would you like something? Do you need any noise?
Starting point is 00:06:34 Yes, I do. I do because, you know, I've shared a lot of things on this show. I don't want to make you embarrassed or anything. You're a criminal. Let's be real. I cheated in my maths HSC exam because I am actually really, really terrible at maths. And I now say this as a forewarning to teachers out there.
Starting point is 00:06:51 Here is another way that you can catch students out for teaching. So back in the day. For cheating. Yeah, catch teachers out for cheating. You said teaching. Keep going. No, teachers, please continue teaching. Catch the teachers out for teaching.
Starting point is 00:07:03 You chef, you stop cooking. Never stop teaching. But this is how you can catch a cheater. So I, when I did my HSC, you could bring into the exam room, like your calculator, your protractor, like all the bits and pieces. But you also could bring in blank paper, which was like the paper that you would use to do your equations on. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:20 Right? So working paper. Well, I discovered when I was studying one day, a pretty smart hack that I thought was smart at the time. I got all my paper and I stacked it all up and then I scored all of my, So I wrote heavily on the top paper all of my equations that I needed to know. I threw away the top paper and then there they were, all imprinted in the paper underneath.
Starting point is 00:07:42 And I took that in with me into my exam and no one knew and I had them all sitting there. And that's the reason why I passed my maths HSC exam. I'm such a, I'm so bad at maths. That's pretty smart. I think that's smart. I did something similar, but worse. Michelle Turi, my mum, taught me how to do it in my HSC.
Starting point is 00:07:59 Your mum taught you how to teach? Yeah, yeah. I've got an admission too. I didn't do any maths. I dropped all maths in year 10. And in my English, I needed to remember keywords or whatever. I don't even remember what it was. But on my eraser, my rubber that you rub out pencil with,
Starting point is 00:08:13 because you're writing pencil. You wrote on your eraser. I peeled off the adhesive because it's wrapped in cardboard. The paper, yes. And I wrote all my notes on the inside of the paper as small as I could, like a mess. And then I folded it back up, taped it, and then when the teacher wasn't looking, I would peel it down,
Starting point is 00:08:28 read my notes and peel it back and no one questioned a thing and I still failed. I hate you, sis. All right, stand back, people. You've got one? I've got one. Oh, great. When I was in Year 3.
Starting point is 00:08:41 Oh, here we go. That's the only time I've cheated. I'm a goody-goody. What did you cheat on? A spelling test. And I think my friend set me up. I think she knew that I was cheating. So I was looking.
Starting point is 00:08:52 She was really smart. And I was looking over at her paper and the word was people. I'll never forget it. Oh, yeah. People. And she wrote, and she's too smart for this. She wrote P-E-O-P-P-L-E. She wrote double P and I copied it down.
Starting point is 00:09:06 And then when he marked the test, she got it right. So she must have rubbed it out and she set me up for failure. And to this day, I have not forgotten it. Look, we are coming into the time of year where people are going to be sitting their exams, whether that is your university exams, your HSC exams. And we all, the three of us, devastatingly just admitted something we probably shouldn't have admitted.
Starting point is 00:09:27 And that is that we are cheaters. It should be fair in my defence. I only cheated when I was eight. You cheated in your HSC. I cheated in my HSC. Only in maths, which I failed at anyway. So no one, I mean, I didn't use it. It's not like I cheated and then I've gone on to be like a mathematician
Starting point is 00:09:42 and it's been a whole farce. I work in radio. Yeah, I cheated in English and now I talk for a living. So that does seem. No, yeah, that's problematic, isn't it? We all had interesting methods of cheating. But we did. And this is the thing, right?
Starting point is 00:09:53 Okay, I don't want anyone to confuse this. We are not endorsing cheating because cheaters never win, apparently. What we are trying to do, though, is that for all the teachers out there, for anyone who works in education, we are going to expose the ways in which people cheat. Sammy has called us. Hey, Sammy, what was your cheating tactic? Hi. Hi. In my final year of university, my econometrics exam, I really couldn't be bothered to learn all of the formulas.
Starting point is 00:10:19 You needed to know them off by heart. So I wrote them all down on a piece of paper, put them in my bra, and then conveniently went to go to the toilet two or three times just to make sure I had them all in the right order. Well, they can't really do a strip search. I think that's a standard cheating, Sammy. I'm not going to lie. Shoving it in your bra. I don't think that was overly creative. I think there's been a lot of bra cheating.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Don't criticise her cheating ways. No, it's good. She's not evil enough to think of something more demonic. What would you do, girls? Would you cleave it or would you underboob it? No, you've got to underboob it. You can't put it in cleavage because then if you bend down, they'll see it. What can you hold with the underboob grip?
Starting point is 00:10:51 You could hold it. Oh, mine are so saggy these days. I could hold a telephone with mine. It doesn't need to be – it's in your bra, so you're not wearing bralettes. You don't have to tuck it up under your boob. It's just got to be in the bra. I get you. Sometimes it pays to have sandbags.
Starting point is 00:11:06 The amount of things you could carry with them. Laura carries a lunch under there. She does. Laura's got a roll-up. It's melting. What about you, Abby? Hi. How did you cheat?
Starting point is 00:11:14 Hi. I was in an Indonesian exam, and a couple of my friends and I wrote some of the answers on our leg, and we made sure, you know, our skirt covered it, et cetera. When we were in the exam, I sat down and I kind of folded my skirt into my legs, therefore all my answers were on display. I didn't end up having to use them, but it wasn't until after my test that we got pulled into the teacher's office where the prep student had dobbed us in.
Starting point is 00:11:40 So what does it mean? But what does the teacher say? Because they can't say, well, show us up under your skirt. You'd say, no, this is harassment. Let me go home to my mum. She said, what's on your leg? And I said, oh, what do you mean? like what's on my leg
Starting point is 00:11:54 and she's like we know you were cheating and the girl that our job's on us was sitting there smirking and I was like I'm done. You're like
Starting point is 00:12:03 it's just a Pythagoras birthmark. Yeah, I was never going to use Indonesian. I thought it was Indonesian. No one likes a dobber though. That sucks. You should just say like my partner's Indonesian
Starting point is 00:12:14 and I wrote I love you in Indonesian. It's a tattoo. It's a tattoo. It's a poem. Why was she looking at my leg? Yeah, good point. Good point.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Oh, thank you for the call. Wow, the people are very creative. Surely there's more. That's all we've got. No, most people probably don't cheat, Laura. Oh, really? Do you know what someone else did in my school? I'll never forget this one.
Starting point is 00:12:34 So it was during the HSC. I thought I'd done bad by scoring it on the paper. They stopped down the exam, in the middle of the exam, and they said somebody, somebody has put their notes in the disabled bathroom, in the sanitary bin in the disabled bathroom. Someone had gone in there and put their notes in there. That was you too, wasn't it?
Starting point is 00:12:53 Yeah. I've had some low points, but that is not one of them. Clearly, and you've done very well for someone who has no empathy at all. No empathy? No empathy? What were you doing going through the disabled person? Mitch failed English, so he couldn't think of the word. Yeah, be honest.
Starting point is 00:13:08 Let me get my eraser and I'll see what word I meant. Mitch, that wasn't me. I didn't do that. That's below me. Laura, are you ready for our next guest? I'm so ready. I'm very familiar with this man. I love this man, Todd McKinney.
Starting point is 00:13:22 He is a judge on Dancing With The Stars and has been for the better part of a decade. And Brittany, you showed us the worst wedding preparation dance that I think I've ever seen in my entire life. Yes, but I was doing brilliantly. It was my fiancé, Ben, that let me down. I feel very questionable about that. I don't know if I agree, but you know what?
Starting point is 00:13:42 I'm not the dancing expert. We know. Yeah, I proved that on my season of Dancing With The Stars. Your season. The season that I ran. Sorry, but you've got to eliminate it after a week. Do you know what? It was Phil Burton's season since he won that, yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:54 But look, I was on it. Yes, of course. More would have been your season. Brittany's getting married in about a year. You've just been in Romania with your fiancé, Ben, and you've realised that you think he can't dance, we think you can't dance. We've seen the video of the first dance rehearsal.
Starting point is 00:14:07 I can move this booty. The man who has seen the video. We've sent it to him, the poor thing. I think he had pent-ups too. The man who actually can move his booty. Correct. It is Todd McKinney from Dancing With The Stars. Welcome, Todd.
Starting point is 00:14:18 How are you? How is Brittany beyond help? Well, you shake your booty a little bit. You come towards the camera and you give it a little bit of sparkle. I think you've got some talent, but... That was unconvincing. Was that unconvincing? But seriously, that man, you can't have him anywhere near a dance floor.
Starting point is 00:14:41 Like, seriously. Do you know, I think it's because he's so big. Like, he's 100 kilos and six, five and a half or something. Do you think that there's like – do you think it's really hard to dance when your partners are such mismatched heights? Well, I think it's really – yes, I do. It's much harder. But it's also much harder to dance when you have three left feet.
Starting point is 00:15:05 What do you think, Todd? The thing I loved about the video, though, is that he was giving you instruction. I know. Like he was the expert. And I was thinking, this guy just needs to shut up. That's so good. I can't wait to send him this. I thought when he picked you up and spun you around,
Starting point is 00:15:22 and bless your heart, Britt, you were trying to do a nice line with your leg and everything, but you didn't have a lot to work with. But I thought that he handled that really, really well. So my advice would be to stand him in the centre of the dance floor and you just dance around him and then he just picks you up at the end. That's a good tip. But you know what I think?
Starting point is 00:15:44 I watch men like that who dance. And also, did I hear that he's like a footy player? Yeah, he's a goalkeeper, like professional. So his feet should be like super fast, fancy feet. Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Maybe the only thing you could do is dress yourself up as a football and he could just kick you around. Todd is a goalkeeper.
Starting point is 00:16:02 He just stands there anyway. He doesn't even run around the field. Well, that's his gift, isn't it? Just standing. The advice we've gotten so far is dress yourself up as a football or give him a lap dance on your wedding dance. They're the two things. It's going to happen anyway.
Starting point is 00:16:16 But when I watch men like that dance, especially at weddings, because I just think you can tell what kind of lovemaker somebody is by watching them dance. Oh, God, yes. Mate, get out of there. No, no, I'm going to dispute that because the man is better horizontal than he is upright. Why do you reckon Brett can't hold her neck up?
Starting point is 00:16:38 I think really seriously just hire a couple of professional dancers, dress them up in your outfit, you go and sit down, have a beer and let them take a floor. Todd, I cannot wait to film my wedding dance and I'm going to send, I'm going to WhatsApp it straight to you. It's going to be incredible. Why don't we invite Todd? We'll pay for it on the pick-up card and we can bring Todd
Starting point is 00:16:58 and he can have one to ten in cards under the wedding table and then after the first dance Todd can go, four. Todd, you can come. I think just bring like one, two and three. Yeah, I agree. Todd McKinney, thank you for joining us. We adore you. Dancing with the Stars.
Starting point is 00:17:14 Coming back, I think. Is it back or are you on break at the moment? I'll see you next season, Todd. See you there. See you, Todd. What a legend. Britt, Laura, you know I love you both. Deeply.
Starting point is 00:17:23 Passionately. You didn't get me a birthday present, so I don't know that. I did. It's in the mail. Something has come across my desk, my table. You sound choked up, Mitch. I am choked up because it's something that I feel staunchly about, and that is women's bathrooms.
Starting point is 00:17:38 All right. Please, please, do go on. I know you're listening thinking, you know what? I don't think this sounds like a women's issue. No, I believe this is a men's issue. There is a push today for the National Construction Code to enforce a two-to-one ratio of women's public bathrooms to men's public bathrooms.
Starting point is 00:17:55 Oh, thank God. Two-to-one? Yeah, they want to double the amount of women's public bathrooms. El doble. Women, and I for one, want to start this push as a man because let me tell you something. Let me just paint the inequality. If you're a woman and you've never been in a men's bathroom,
Starting point is 00:18:09 I can walk in there. I can get one of six at times urinals. I can walk into a wall of trough. The luxury. The luxury. There are also four open cubicles that I could walk into. I have a confession to make. Go for it.
Starting point is 00:18:22 I often will not line up for the women's bathroom because there's nothing worse in this life than getting to the toilet and seeing a long line of women waiting at the toilet and not a single man is waiting in the men's cubicle type line. None. Often I will just go, you know what? I'll suck it up and I'll walk straight into the men's.
Starting point is 00:18:41 And there they all are standing at the trough doing away and I'll just walk straight into a cubicle, go to the toilet and then walk out, blinkers on and go out. But I use a men's toilet if there is a long line at the ladies. I was about to say I use men's toilets too, but I would never do that if they were at the urinal. Well, you don't know. You walk in and then you're already in there.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Yes, but then you can't continue to commit, Laura, because their junk is out. But only a couple of days ago I was in Romania visiting my fiancé and we're at this like outdoor pool spa thing, like an indoor spa. Club Romania is weird. It was weird, yeah. So I wanted to go to the bathroom and the bathroom's men's and women's lines were in like the same area, like no troughs,
Starting point is 00:19:20 just actual cubicles. And I went in and there were about 25 women lined up for two toilets and then there were three men's cubicles free. So I stood in the line for a second and I looked around and I was like, stop this. Went into the men's toilet, came out and there was a line of men. They all gave me a bit of a greasy. But I was like, it's just a toilet.
Starting point is 00:19:37 Yeah. I agree. And also, like, I think most women have been to a festival or a concert or something where the line is out the freaking door for the women's toilets and not the men's. But let me tell you, I've seen this. I've noticed this. And I've crunched the numbers.
Starting point is 00:19:49 Women and girls make up more than half of the population. Thanks, Mitch. They go to the toilet more often and they spend way longer in the bathroom than men from my studies. Yes, we do. Not only that, women also make up for 80% of people with incontinence. Do we? Yeah, I found that online.
Starting point is 00:20:03 Yes, it's because we have kids. I'm speaking from experience, yes. You're beating cotton at yourself? Well, I've got bad pelvic floor after two babies. Sometimes there's leakage. But also, women have menstrual cycles they need to use bathrooms for more than men. Women also need, are probably usually the primary caregiver for the children when they're out shopping.
Starting point is 00:20:22 They need to take their children to the cubicles more often. Like, this makes sense. I, Mitch Turi, hereby vouch on the picker that we need to mandate and enforce a doublet. What do you call it? A doublet. Double the women's toilets in this country. My stamp of approval.
Starting point is 00:20:40 Duble, toilet, today-lay. Maybe we get Michael Bublé to front the campaign. Yes, the face of this. Bublé on the duble toilet. You could have just said today because that would have also rhymed, but that's fine. I could have. And the tagline can be whether it's a number one or a number two-blay.
Starting point is 00:20:54 You do you, boo. No, I don't know about that. I just think we should push it. And if you agree with us, hit us up on the pickup socials. Let us know your thoughts. Do you use the male bathroom? I think this is something genuinely that needs to change. I have a question.
Starting point is 00:21:05 How would you feel, Mitch, if you were at the trough and Laura Byrne walked in and just blinkers down, I'm not looking, I just go straight into a cubicle? You're not that famous, mate. Dead. It's very funny. Who's that? Who's that man with the ponytail?
Starting point is 00:21:24 Girls, I had my one-year anniversary with my boyfriend Stephen last week. What? Yeah. That's not even true. You only started dating like three months ago. I swear to God he's been around for 20 minutes. did you actually well we celebrated our wedding anniversary but it wasn't our wedding anniversary well that doesn't make any sense it's the problem i'm he doesn't listen to these because he's 22
Starting point is 00:21:44 and doesn't know how to turn on the radio so i can safely speak why is it okay when you make the age jokes but when we make them you hate it i don't know so he said hey we had our first date on the first of september and i was like we did it was a beautiful first date and in that moment And I'm like, I like this guy. And then we weren't official for a solid six months from the first date. Yeah, well, you weren't official. You were very unofficial. You were still potentially dating other people.
Starting point is 00:22:08 Well, yeah. Loosely, yes. Yeah, yeah. The waters are very, very murky. It's very grey. No, you came overseas with me in that time of Christmas. Hey, what is wrong with you? Just in case he is listening.
Starting point is 00:22:19 And Mitch and I hooked up. Obviously, was what I was going to say. Nothing happened. Stephen said, hey, let's celebrate our one year on the 1st of September. because in my eyes, I knew you were for me on the 1st of December. Did you feel like a fraud? Were you like, well, even though I know we weren't really together just because we met that day, did you feel like you were faking it?
Starting point is 00:22:36 I just thought, babe, technically it's March. Like if it was October or November, I'd be like, sure, jump forward two months. But the fact that it's a solid six months early kind of confused me. But then he said we need to get gifts. I thought I'm budgeted for a one-year anniversary gift at this point in time. I think it's okay.
Starting point is 00:22:50 You can celebrate whenever you want to celebrate because no one makes the rules around when you should celebrate your relationship. but I don't think you can outwardly tell people that you've been together for a year. It's like trying to, it's trying to like get more time, like more cred, street cred to your relationship. Nah, that's what I did.
Starting point is 00:23:06 The moment I banged my now fiance, the moment we did the horizontal. Oh, he's Irish. Oh, he's in Ireland. He's not Irish. He's Swiss. This feels like Swiss music. It feels very like non-banging kind of music if one, yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:21 But the moment that we hooked up, so we hooked up for one date and I thought I would never see him again, right? This is your boyfriend's band, your fiancé. My fiancé band. We thought we'd never see each other again. But that first day, turns out that was, we never were with anyone else again.
Starting point is 00:23:35 We were obsessed with each other from the first day. So that became our anniversary. So our anniversary is the moment we did the horizontal dance of love. I do not want to have the same, like the same reference point for anniversaries as what you guys have. My reference point for my anniversary with my husband is when he, this sounds so stupid to anyone who doesn't know, he was The Bachelor a million years ago.
Starting point is 00:23:58 And on the show, we stood on like a little magical carpet in Thailand and he said to me, Laura, I want you to be my girlfriend and I love you. And prior to that, he was making out with 24 other women that I lived in a house with. So I don't want it to be from the date that I met him at. But looking back, I'm like, well, look, it worked out okay. Wait, Laura, when is your anniversary with Maddie?
Starting point is 00:24:17 Do you do your wedding anniversary? No, we still do the anniversary when the show ended. Wait, so your anniversary is the show ending? Yeah, we met in February, right? And then we did three months of filming where all the girls that were on The Bachelor, we all lived in a big house together and then they all got, like, yeeted out one by one and then at the very end, the end of filming was, what's that,
Starting point is 00:24:36 February, end of May, and so end of May is when we got flown to Thailand for the finale and that's when he dwindled down to the two of us and he chose me, so that night. Yeah, but then you hid for three months. You couldn't be seen together. Yeah, but we did long distance though. But we still actually, we snuck around and we did do a couple of cheeky rendezvous during that time.
Starting point is 00:24:56 It doesn't matter if you've seen each other. And I say that because I'm long distance. It's just that, yeah, so I'm feeling very attacked. It's the day. Don't invalidate my relationship with you. Don't look at me. Brittany's only seen him seven times. I don't actually know his name, all right?
Starting point is 00:25:10 This is my fault. This is my story to start with and now I'm the problem. Okay, sorry. At the end of the day, Midge, just go with the flow. You don't need to budget for a gift to celebrate an anniversary. If he really wants that day, Ben almost wants to change. Like sometimes we talk about changing our anniversary to suit when we're going to physically be together.
Starting point is 00:25:27 You can't. No, you can't do that. You don't reckon you're going to change it? No. Some people do. I've got friends that have changed their date because it's too close to their birthdays. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:34 I've got one. What if you met on a leap year? You'd have to change it because otherwise you've only been together for one year when really it's been quite a long time. Four. Yeah, four. Yeah, true. That's hard.
Starting point is 00:25:42 That's tricky. There you go. Happy anniversary, Mish. Thank you. And I'm happy. I'm very happy. mitch and laura i went down like this proper rabbit hole on the internet there's a thread where someone posed a question what's the secret about your profession that the general public
Starting point is 00:25:58 doesn't know of course that piqued my interest because i was like love a secret about the profession or like what happens within a workplace well the occupation so what's no we're not not what's happening like oh were there affairs something about your occupation i'll give you some examples because it was pretty shocking hi i'm an it guy i google half of my problems i buy your computers from a place that you could buy them from and then i mark them up 35 or more oh he just sounds like a crappy it guy i think that's probably most people the it industry in general yeah i'd say it probably could be yeah i mean yeah i don't know okay another one more more um A boutique hotel that I...
Starting point is 00:26:39 Boutique. Boutique? Boutique? Boutique? Boutique. Tomato, tomato. A fancy hotel. A boutique hotel.
Starting point is 00:26:47 A boutique hotel I worked at, didn't wash the comforters unless necessary. Oh. They wouldn't wash the... Okay, this is my biggest... That's disgusting. No, this is my biggest fear going to a hotel. I don't trust that they've actually washed the pillowcases, the sheets. I think they just kind of check them.
Starting point is 00:27:02 They do. And if they're fine enough, they're just good to go. Well, this fancy hotel, it can be confirmed that they do not wash the comforters. Think of what goes down on a bed. I am sorry. Wait, is the comforter the doona? Is that what the comforter is? It's like the bit on top?
Starting point is 00:27:15 The comforter goes under the sheet to make the bed more comfortable. Are you sure that's what a comforter is? I'm really not sure. I'm telling you that's what it is. Let's not get bogged down in the details of a comforter. Why don't we ask the IT guy to Google it? Okay. I'm going to Google it.
Starting point is 00:27:30 I work. This is funny, guys. Be aware. Yeah, I worked in a bakery. The French bread and Italian bread are exactly the same just with different scoring designs on the top. But one is $2.50 more. They are faking their bread.
Starting point is 00:27:47 That's French and Italian bread, $2 difference, same bread. You can't do that. I've got one. I've got one. This is from an inbound call centre. We are currently experiencing an unusual high call volume. It's permanent. They just didn't staff appropriately.
Starting point is 00:27:59 Oh, of course. They're doing a poo or something. That's not something to get turned on when they actually have an influx. They just play that to everyone. No, you know that that's the case though. That is like they're trying to budget cut. They don't have enough people on the phones. I used to work in a restaurant and they would,
Starting point is 00:28:12 like I don't want to donate out the restaurant, but like anything that didn't, so like creme brulees or anything that was like not going to go off overnight. Yeah, not going to go. I don't even know how to describe it because you would say like just putting it back in the fridge, but it was stuff that you just shouldn't put back in the fridge for the next day and they would really stretch that out
Starting point is 00:28:29 until its absolute last legs and you'd look at it and be like, I reckon that's going to make someone sick. Yeah, but sometimes you can tell. You know how sometimes you go and get a croissant from somewhere and you're like, that's not today's croissant. That is 2023's croissant. So I think about it. One thing that comes to mind was like mashed potatoes specifically.
Starting point is 00:28:45 So we had this one dish and they'd make a massive batch of mashed potatoes and it goes under all the steaks. If that mashed potato didn't even get used one day, it would just go into the fridge. And then the next day they'd drag it out and mix it with the new mashed potatoes. I think that's fine. Potatoes are fine. That's how they survive famines and stuff.
Starting point is 00:29:00 Potatoes are dirty. Potatoes are like soil in a plant. You kind of mix it in with the rest. What about this one? So this is a friend that I'm not going to name and shame. They used to work for customer care for a company. And they said, you know when you go on a website and you type in the live chat? Like, talk to a customer service agent right now.
Starting point is 00:29:13 That's a bot. No, no. It's a real person in some companies. They can see what you're typing before you press send. So they have access to what you're typing. So he said the racist sometimes, the homophobic, the rude, the mean. And then they delete it. And then they delete it.
Starting point is 00:29:26 Just right. Okay. That is so wild. That is actually a really good lesson for everyone. That's actually so interesting. Do you know what I worry about? I worry about like when you're on hold and stuff that they can actually listen. You know how you have, you know how you can be on hold for three hours?
Starting point is 00:29:41 You could be having personal conversations going about your life. I reckon they listen. Totally. We've been talking industry secrets. There's a thread that's going around online where people are outing like the things that go on in their professional occupation that people would be shocked about. I'm talking like an IT guy said that he had, he actually Googles all of his problems. He buys computers for the same price everyone else does
Starting point is 00:30:02 than just marks them up 35%, like stuff like that. Surely people are like literate enough though to know that they can just go online and do the same thing. Well, no, they're not. That's why people have jobs. Yeah. Oh, look, I mean, in every industry, there are things that happen that I think we would be shocked
Starting point is 00:30:17 if we found out the truth. And that's what we want to know. Yeah, give us a call here on the show. Let's go to, who do we have? We've got Maggie. Hey, Maggie, what's your little secrets, Bill? I used to be a housekeeper and we would change quilt covers. You wouldn't change the quilt covers?
Starting point is 00:30:32 Yes. A housekeeper in a hotel? In a mine site. Oh, so like a mine site, like they have a hotel where you stay on site. So like they still, it's not a hotel, but there's accommodation. Got it, got it. Why wouldn't you? Yes.
Starting point is 00:30:45 For laziness or? Because we had too many rooms to do a day. We had to do 80 plus rooms a day. So we would just check the quilt covers. Like we would change the sheets, but we would check the quilt covers. and if they were fine, we would just make a nice bed and get a move on. What did you have to see to quantify a change?
Starting point is 00:31:06 Like what did you have to see on that quill? Oh, we don't want to know about that. Yeah, we do. So what would you do? You'd just walk in and fluff them up and not change them? Or flip it over. Yeah, flip. Yep.
Starting point is 00:31:15 Yeah, exactly. This is horrifying. I am convinced that this is what happens at hotels as well. Yeah, I'm with you. Check your doonas, everyone. Check your duvets. Alicia, hey, what happens in your industry? Spill, spill.
Starting point is 00:31:28 I work in cafes for years. I've done it and basically whenever you go in to buy anything like a cake or a sandwich or whatever, I always get it from the very front, like at the right, like touching the glass because everything at the back is the oldest and the stuff they're trying to get rid of first. Yeah, that makes sense though, doesn't it? How old? Like what's the oldest that you know has been in there?
Starting point is 00:31:48 Well, usually if they have some sort of special like cake of the day or that's the stuff that's going to be thrown in the bin either that day or should have gone the day before. Cake of the day is a rock cake. Do you think it's the same if you go to a restaurant and they have a special? Do you think that they've just made something out of the ingredients that are going bad?
Starting point is 00:32:07 Or do you think that is just that they got limited special or something? I reckon bit of column A, bit of column B. I think both, yeah, especially if it's like a seafood dish, I reckon, because prawns and stuff are like a real limited time. So I reckon they just pump them out in a special. Yeah, if it's a perishable, if it's like egg souffle with a side of caviar and prawns, you're like, that's... Mitch, it's a restaurant.
Starting point is 00:32:22 It's all perishable. It's really not that special. You're going to Macca's? True. Yes, I am. All right, lastly, Casey, hey, what's your industry secret? Tell us the goss. When I was a teenager, I worked at a donut shop
Starting point is 00:32:34 and they did the hot cinnamon donuts. Yum. And it comes in like a powder form. And on occasion, weevils would get in there, like they do in your flour in the cupboard. Oh, my God, are you kidding me? And you'd just use it anyway, wouldn't you? we had to sift it out and then mix up the mix no you didn't that's vulgar i am shook because i used
Starting point is 00:32:58 to line up for the you know watching a hot cinnamon donut plop out in real time he's like one of my favorite things yeah you know plops out of the donut wait is is are the weevils in the sugar or they're in the batter no um so the batter before it's made because it comes like in a bag sort of thing and they like much like a flower bag in your cupboard and they can get in there so yeah it would just be sifted out as to not waste the product well that stresses me out less because they at least get cooked they're not in there laura they're not in there anymore they're sifted out no i know but like the bacteria is cooked in the boiling oil and you know when a moth or like a weevil like hits glass it's got a powdery coating on it that is what is in the
Starting point is 00:33:38 cinnamon sugar you know when you hear the moth and it goes what is that by the way we'll get a scientist on one day why are they powdery if you ever hit a moth against a window then there's like an outline of a moth like it's a crime scene and they've covered it in tape? No, I don't kill moths. I kill bogan moths. You also eat them
Starting point is 00:33:52 with your donuts. Yeah, clearly. Thank you for ruining my day, Casey. Yeah, I'm done. There you go. The mystery's solved. We'll be right back.
