Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey guys and welcome back to another episode of Life Uncut. I'm Brittany and I'm Laura and today we have a very very special episode for you and I know I say that every single week but I'm going to keep on saying it because every Tuesday is very very special let me tell you that it's honestly your favorite line sometimes I don't know what the episode is you're like this is a very special episode and I'm like oh does she have a surprise for me it's just like your favorite thing to say I'm a woman of routine what can I say but no okay I'm gonna stand by this the reason why we are doing this episode today we have a very special person who we're interviewing we're interviewing a woman named m kerry and m kerry has a wild story she is known as the woman
Starting point is 00:01:02 who fell from the sky and i feel like at the moment with everything that's happening in the world the world is heavy the news is heavy everything is insurmountable and it's a bit dark and it's a bit depressing so we're going to play you a podcast of a woman that fell from a plain is what Laura's trying to say. So we thought we would bring you a harrowing story. No we have the reason why we bring you this is yes of course like this is a situation that was awful like what happened to M. Kerry is horrendous however it is honestly one of the most uplifting stories about resilience and about self-awareness and about self-discovery and about like this personal rebirth that she experienced and she is just one of the most wonderfully positive women that I
Starting point is 00:01:44 think we have ever interviewed and I feel like we all need a little bit more positivity in our lives at the moment so that is what we are talking about today but you know that before we get into the interviews we always have a bit of shit to talk about first Brittany what's been happening in your life also was your birthday so happy birthday from far far across the other side of the pond so it was my birthday I felt very lucky for multiple reasons firstly I felt lucky because I got two birthdays because I got an Australian birthday and an American birthday which was which was lovely everyone from back home gave me so much love and I felt very special for that I am 34 it was you know it is officially now I'm seven years older than Jordan so yesterday I was six
Starting point is 00:02:24 years older today I'm seven years older and I don't know how I feel about that I was really hanging on to that six years so when we met I was seven years right and then he had his birthday just after and I was like thank fuck we're only six years and now we're back to seven years but anyway so it was my birthday I had a great day just purely for the fact that I was here and I was with Jordan but to be honest we didn't really do much I just watched Jordan play tennis every day that is what I do I am a tennis I don't want to say wag because I work really hard but my life here revolves around Jordan like it is what it is and it's his work and he's doing that so I just watched him play tennis he really spoiled me with a lovely gift he wrote a lovely
Starting point is 00:03:04 card and he took me out to a semi lovely dinner and I say semi lovely dinner just because we just walked around the corner to a Thai restaurant and we just ate whatever we could get in for do feel on this with with all the other partners girlfriends I do feel very old against them but I feel like if I keep up my skincare routine I'm really gonna hold on to and also you know what Jordan Jordan doesn't look that young I'm gonna say it I love I love the kid and I can call him a kid because he is that much younger than me how do you feel about the seven year age gap like I know that at the start you were a little bit like oh I don't want to tell people this but now I guess it's one of those things that you just become like familiar with and then stop caring but like
Starting point is 00:03:48 what do you think of it I'm sure that there's other people who listen to the podcast who have a huge age gap and one of the things that I think is so interesting is like we would not bat an eyelid if you were the guy and Jordan was six years or seven years younger than you we wouldn't even think differently of it but the fact that you're the one that's seven years older there's instantly a little bit of like oh that's different yeah and why is that because I mean I think like that too I would have you don't you'd like you to say you do not bat an eyelid when a woman dates up and most of the time as we know that's what happens women date people their age or older when I met Jordan and I was like holy shit he's like I've got to pick him up from school
Starting point is 00:04:25 that was I think it's probably because people say things like you're just saying right now about your own relationship yeah and I mean like I can say it about myself because it's funny but I was really I was worried for the start I was like I remember saying you saying to you Laura I was like what are people gonna think what are people gonna say are people gonna judge me is this gonna be a really big deal because I remember I don't know if you do remember when Megan Gale started dating her now fiance husband Sean and all the controversy that had so much controversy around it and now in hindsight I'm like why why was that such a big deal I think he was about 24 ish at the time 25 ish so he was a little bit younger than Jordan but I just remember there
Starting point is 00:05:05 being so much negativity around it and I remember thinking this is going to happen to me too seven years is a big age gap and in all honesty there has been nothing I have been like no one has said anything I think we've come a long way in society and I think it's it's normal now people do whatever they want and so much more is accepted now than it was 10 years ago don't you agree well I also think there's a greater conversation around here we've spoken about internalized misogyny before like how we are products of the environment that we've been raised in and like we have been raised to think that women date older men and then date younger women and that's normal and that's okay but it's like if you are a female who dates a younger guy you're a cougar and there's always
Starting point is 00:05:39 been negative connotations that have played out and that whether it's been in like the movies that we've watched or in the conversations that we've had growing up it's just been built into our psyche and I think it takes a long time to kind of rework those internalized ideas that we have that are hugely imparted by like the patriarchy and I feel like there's a whole episode on like what is and isn't acceptable and how society's thoughts and opinions on these things are changing but also who freaking cares like I have dated guys who are so much older than me who are so much more immature and then I mean Matt is actually the youngest guy I've ever dated he is two years younger than me it's nothing to write home about but obviously our relationship has been one of
Starting point is 00:06:19 the most mature that I have even though my partner makes TikTok videos and makes me learn them uh yeah look there's a whole other lot of things there we need to unpack no but in all honesty Jordan and I we don't notice it I definitely don't notice it anymore I'm and you guys probably know like of course I have a side that wants to run a business and is mature but 95% of me I am just a kooky nerd burger I just as immature as Jordan is sometimes we have a lot of fun together but i have never really noticed the difference in age and i and i swear by that besides the fact that obviously i'm a little bit more advanced in wanting a family and to settle down a little bit that's the only discrepancy that's the only thing we found otherwise we just have a lot of fun
Starting point is 00:06:57 together he's probably good he's good for my bones and my osteoarthritis keeping me youthful giving me sprightly but something funny did happen i want to tell you about i mean i thought it was funny a few days ago i was just walking down the street and these two girls came running up to me and they're like oh my god they're American I'm gonna try and do an American accent oh my god you're from The Bachelor and I was like sorry what they're like you're from The Bachelor and I was like oh my god I was like yeah I am and I was like frothing I was like fuck these American like someone's recognized me in America I've made it mom I've made it so and I was like yeah I am and then Jordan was just he was talking to someone he was like a couple meters behind me and she was
Starting point is 00:07:36 they were looking at him they're looking at me they're like oh my god we love you so much and was like stop it I was like okay but keep going then they were like I can't believe you guys are still together that's so great and I was like huh and I was like I was like sorry what they're like you're still together we love you too they're like oh my god we love you as Jordan walked up closer and I was like I was like we've only been together for about like nine months and they're like sorry what and then they're like keep talking what did you just say and I kept talking they're like you have an accent and I was like what bachelor are you talking about I was like I'm from the Australian Bachelor. They're like, oh, we thought you were from American Bachelor in
Starting point is 00:08:13 Paradise. And I was like, fuck it. They're like, there's a couple that looks exactly like you two. And I was like, here I was thinking I just made it. I was about to quit my job and move to Hollywood and it wasn't even me. They were frothing. Apparently there is a couple in the Bachelor in America. I don't know who it is. That looks like Jordan and myself. That's what happened to me. I haven't made it. I'm still on the podcast. I'm not quitting. There's really nothing like running into someone who has completely mistaken you for someone who's famous that will really cut you back down to size especially because I was rolling with it I was like yeah that's me like waving like the queen I was like that's me that's totally me all right guys I did put something up
Starting point is 00:08:49 on our Facebook group which I wanted to talk to you about because this thread had me absolutely in tears so the question was posed and if you guys don't follow if you're not part of the Facebook group go jump on okay the question was I want to know what can you say during sex that you could also say at a family dinner like I want your one-liners something that would be absolutely acceptable to say during sex that would also be okay to say when you're sitting down to have dinner with your family with the in-laws with your dad I jumped on this thread too and I have to say you guys are some funny fuckers I was trying to think if I've ever said anything and I haven't but I was like what could I say that to add to this I'd be like can I have some more whipped
Starting point is 00:09:27 cream in my mouth that's all I could do that's the best I came up with okay how do you feel about dirty talk I get so nervous I like it being said to me but I get really nervous saying it back as it's coming out of my mouth I'm like and I kind of flinch at the same time for fear of embarrassment it's definitely not for everyone like and it's not for all partners like I feel like some people could be really into it with one partner then they get with a new partner and it just doesn't land because if your partner doesn't give you anything back if you say to them if you say put that whipped cream all over me and they just be like what I don't eat dessert you know that then it's awkward as fuck like you need someone that can contribute i'm gonna just say
Starting point is 00:10:05 it brit i don't think talking about whipped cream is necessarily dirty talk i'm talking about call me a little slut type dirty i'm talking like real get in there and give it a good nudge my dad listens to the podcast so i have to keep it like kitchen related i have to keep it like whipped cream related me with matt i'm like you big sexy man like i just don't know and he's like yeah that's it laura just there keep saying that the spot that's the spot okay let's read out some of these so brick got on there she has picked her favorites i have picked my favorites and some of the one liners that you guys came out with were absolutely gold this is my favorite can i push your stool in that is rank that is too big trust you to go straight to the poopy one stop playing
Starting point is 00:10:51 with it and put it in your mouth you can use your fingers that's a big sausage is it a little bit dry is your brother joining us please i hope none of you have ever said that in a bedroom i'm so full i could explode i think we need some more napkins and then of course how else would you end it except for thanks for coming i mean standard do you actually ever say that to matt you're like well thanks thanks for coming wait stop playing with it and put it in my mouth well there you go guys if you didn't know how to dirty talk you can take that list and go for gold if there are things that you can say to your partner but you can also say them to your dad then that they're like the safe territory for dirty talk go ahead go forth dirty talk also do
Starting point is 00:11:39 you just dirty talk out of nowhere if you've never dirty talked with your partner do you just drop a bomb and hope for the best how do you ease into that i think you ease into it with the whipped cream take my advice but you have to be using whipped cream you can't just start talking about whipped cream there's none in the bedroom you can't be like put the whipped cream on my mouth and he's like what whipped cream what about how do you start it I feel like you start it by being like tell me that you like that tell me what you like and you kind of like get them to start it or do you like that that's a good one like do you like that and then all they have to say back is yeah and then you change position you're like what about that they're like yeah that's about
Starting point is 00:12:13 as dirty as Laura and Matt get I want to know what your one go-to line is in the bedroom yeah Sorry, Mr. Hockley. Oh, you've put me on the spot. I don't, I mean, I don't have a go-to. I'd probably, I'd probably say that. I'd probably like to like that. That's probably my life. All right, guys, this is the podcast you listen to.
Starting point is 00:12:30 Here we are with sex, dating and relationship advice. And we're both too much of a prude to actually dirty talk. I mean, no, I agree with what you said earlier. Look, there's definitely been relationships that I've been in where the dirty talk has been off the charts. And then there's other people where it just doesn't feel as natural. I once had a guy, it's the same guy who had sex with the back of my knee. so they should come as no surprise to anyone he's my favorite of your exes ever to exist it will
Starting point is 00:12:53 never get that he gets the award like it does not get better than the guy that fucked your leg even Jordan said to Laura the other day we were on a Skype and I was like Jordan say hello to Laura and he walked past and he leans in he's like I need to know something Laura's like what he's like how does one stumble across the fact that they want to fuck your leg look it wasn't just my leg for anyone who hasn't heard that episode it was like the crease behind my knee and he said he wanted to have sex with all of me he also tried to put it in every other crease around my body as well look it was a whole thing it was very flattering at the time and now in retrospect it was a little bit weird he also didn't have a bed base and had his mattress on the floor so like
Starting point is 00:13:31 there was a lot of things going on there did he also make out with your arm you know when you're a teenager and like you needed to practice how to make out and you get your elbow up to your your mouth and make out probably but he once called me and actually like it came out of nowhere and I think that's the thing with dirty talk is like you've got to know what someone's boundaries are so we were having sex outdoors somewhere that we shouldn't have been having sex was all a little bit too risque for me as it was and then he called me a dirty little slut and I got really sad and I cried halfway through so you weren't into it you weren't into it you cried in the sex I cried I cried because I felt like he actually thought that of me and I was
Starting point is 00:14:11 young and I didn't know any different and like for me it was like the very first time anybody had ever dirty talked to me and I wasn't I honestly didn't know that that's what he was doing I was like I thought he thought so little of me I mean Laura you were very easy you were offering up the back of your leg like there's no tomorrow excuse me do not slut shame me in the back of my knee Brittany I'm sorry that you're too good for that my knees were off bounce my knees were off bounce anyway guys, but we do have a great episode for you today. I'm going to stop talking about having sex with the back of my knee. Before we get into the chat with M. Kerry today, we do have our favorite part of every episode that we will always bring you. Actually, that's a lie. We didn't bring
Starting point is 00:14:47 it to you on last week's episode, but we made up for it on Ask Uncut. This is Accidentally Unfiltered. It is where we read out your most embarrassing stories and we collectively laugh at you together as the beautiful Life Uncut community that we are. I'm going to kickstart it and I'm gonna go for one that's not poo related today because I know we do do a lot of poops and that was an option I want you guys to be really proud of me there was a poop option today and I didn't take it I went enough I went another direction the amount of self-control that it took Brittany to not do that is should be highly commended honestly they're the funniest ones okay but this is equally as funny girls I'm actually dying today I went for a vagina swab picture this
Starting point is 00:15:27 my legs are up in the stirrups the gynecologist is right between my legs her head is really deep in there i'm lying back i'm trying to relax but i relax a little bit too much and i let out a silent but very deadly fart the gyno was just pulling the swab out at the same time she crinkled her nose and she goes oh that's quite an odor coming from your vagina thinking it was coming from the swab but in fact it was just a fart that i let off i'm so embarrassed at this point but she has no idea it was a fart and proceeds to diagnose me with something to fix the odor i end up getting some hardcore antibiotics that she thinks is going to fix it she thought she had bacterial vaginosis she thought she had bacterial vaginosis the worst part is she put her head closer to my vulva again
Starting point is 00:16:11 to take a second odor to diagnose me she said she said this is such a strange odor i don't know how to diagnose you here are your antibiotics come back if it's not fixed little did she know i just farted in her face it's so it is so i think i'd rather admit i'd just say look i just accidentally let a whiz pop off rather than yeah i have some hectic dead skunk in my vagina that i need antibiotics but like let's be real pretty much everyone has had bacterial vaginosis at some point in time like whatever she's probably used to it she was like here's some antibiotics come back in a week you'll be fine go on the timing is impeccable the timing of pulling the swab out whilst you let one rip it's just like the silent ones are the worst by far i reckon if it makes a
Starting point is 00:16:57 noise it's usually not that bad silent ones are the ones that really get you unless you're matthew johnson yeah unless you're matthew johnson but also brit i like that you said that you're gonna save us from the poo stories and instead you just told a fart story which is equally of the same it's the same kettle of fish like it's literally the same genre laura really appreciate me okay i have one okay my boyfriend and I are doing long distance and we often send each other surprise gifts usually it's like little presents like bottles of wine and nice chocolates the other day I decided to spice things up by sending him some hot nudes I had used my work phone because the camera is quite a lot better I did my photo shoot it's already it's already I did my photo
Starting point is 00:17:36 shoot different angles self-timer the whole scene and I left very little to the imagination then the plan was to airdrop the photos from my work phone to my personal phone so I could send them through I selected the photos and then I airdropped them to iPhone turns out I'm not the only person whose device is also called iPhone now when we received this of course you're not I did not see that coming when we received this I was like she's gonna send this to like a family member or her housemate I was like we've heard these stories before this is nothing new but no it gets better she airdropped it to her fucking neighbor was he hot I wonder if he was hot I just like I love you I love you for doing this you're living your absolute best life and I'm sure those selfies
Starting point is 00:18:23 were fucking fire but why did you use your work phone I feel like that is the first no you may as well have used your dad's phone you may as well have gone to your dad and be like can I just quickly borrow your phone and then give it back to him I just feel like it's the number one no for taking nudes is using someone else's phone other than yourself so anyway the guy accepted it now she doesn't want to ever leave her house thank god for covid she never has to but quickly before we get into the interview on using a work phone so this is going back many years ago this is a very quick and very stupid story when I used to work in a very very corporate role I once uploaded my all of my iphone photos to my work computer or my work my work computer on my work phone because I
Starting point is 00:19:00 was like I don't want to lose them and I backed it all up to my work computer and there were a lot of nudes on there this is during the same time as sex with the back of my knee guy and dirty talk It was a wild time in my life, people. You're really feeling yourself at that time of life. You're feeling it. You needed to capture the moment. 26, I had fire nudes. They were, you know, I was living my best nude life.
Starting point is 00:19:20 Anyway, I uploaded them all to my computer. Very shortly after that, we got an email and we sat down for like a work board meeting with all of our bosses who told us that they had access to everything that we installed on our computer, but we weren't aware of it. So my like 60 year old boss would have been able to see my nudes. I don't know for sure if he did, but I'm going to say it was perfect timing as to when he jumped on and was like, we need to talk about this. 100%. If they've called a meeting to say, just generally letting everyone know that we have access to your computer.
Starting point is 00:19:50 They fucking saw your fire news. 100% saw it. I'm surprised they told you. Just letting, they could have just kept that a secret. Hey, Laura, we just want to let you know that we can see everything on your computer. And as great as your asshole is, we don't want to see that at 9am in the morning. What news were you sending, woman? Who bends over and says their butthole?
Starting point is 00:20:08 Actually, I take that back. Laura Byrne. Laura Byrne. I was a lot more flexible in my 20s. Oh, God. All right, two kids. After two kids and some hemorrhoids, no one wants to see that butthole anymore. And on that note, let's get into our interview with Em Carey.
Starting point is 00:20:30 On the 9th of June 2013, Em Carey's life changed forever. after booking what was supposed to be the trip of lifetime. Emkari is the girl who fell from the sky and it is a story of trauma, resilience and rediscovering happiness and we are so happy to have you on the podcast today. Welcome to Life Uncut. Thank you, what an intro. There we go.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Yeah, love it. Now there is something that we do with every single person who comes on this podcast and you've been prepped and that is Accidentally Unfiltered. It is you sharing with us your most embarrassing story that you can master, that you want to share with the people. I feel like my meter of embarrassment is very skewed as someone who is like permanently incontinent, which we'll get to. So I have so many stories.
Starting point is 00:21:11 You feel like you've got some banked up. I have so many, but to me, they're like not even that embarrassing because it's just my normal day-to-day life, but I got a funny one. So a few years ago, I went on, I'm going to say it was a first date, like first time I hung out with this guy and I picked him up in my car and we went for a walk and then mid-walk so we're not you know near a bathroom or anything I shit my pants it's just like the end this isn't the worst bit so and then it's like it's very obvious it's everywhere we're in like like the Kujita what's it called so like there's nowhere to go and I was like sick great and so we keep walking and then I was like hey I kind of need to go so we go back
Starting point is 00:21:52 to my car so did he know what we didn't acknowledge it but like he would have known it was obvious were you in shorts or pants or a skirt I was in I think shorts so like there's a trail behind me it was down your leg yeah so then we get back to my car and I was like oh it's fine like maybe he weirdly hasn't noticed yet but I had to drive him home so then I put the windows down I was like okay get rid of the smell like it's fine let's just play some music and then we start driving and then it starts like pouring rain like thunderstorming so I had to put the windows up because he's going oh my god so then we're just awkwardly like in this silent car with the windows up and it's just stink I was not expecting you to take it there so quickly but I'm really glad
Starting point is 00:22:33 we arrived I also love that you just said we got in the car and I was just like I'm trying to cover the smell so I put the music on I was like music is not taking away from but then the worst part was was like he's kind of I guess well known you could say so people were already looking at him people were staring I was like was this a tinder date or did he have some knowledge on who you are like he would have known why that okay yeah but yeah no he was across it so it could have been worse and how did he respond to this situation well we didn't acknowledge it have you ever acknowledged it now no and now we're friends but we've still never acknowledged it I feel like you need to get like a weight off your shoulders and after this I feel like you need to message me and
Starting point is 00:23:10 be like hey remember that time I shit my pants should we just get the you know talk about the elephant in the room yeah it's actually weird that we haven't spoken about it that's a really tough i mean i'm here i am i'm gonna be like that's a tough situation for him that is a really tough situation for you i want to acknowledge that first but i imagine for him too he's obviously known that something's happening and in his brain he's probably like cool i've got two options i do the best thing for her and i just like pretend i don't know or there's a part of him that's probably like she would know i know do i just say to her like should we get you out of here like you know it's such an awkward like do you do you acknowledge that so that it makes you
Starting point is 00:23:41 what would you have preferred in hindsight i think that i was kind of glad that he didn't say anything because I don't know I don't know it could have been awkward if he did whereas yeah I knew he knew anyway but it was kind of nice not having to speak about it when it comes and this is we're going to unpack this a lot further down the track but when it comes to disability there is a moment where people go I don't know how to approach this like I'm not sure what's the correct way to say what I'm like am I supposed to say are you okay am I supposed to say can I help like I'm sure that there was a moment there where he was like I fucking don't know what to do in this situation and maybe not saying anything is helpful however maybe for somebody else not
Starting point is 00:24:17 saying anything isn't helpful yeah like I know if it was one of my friends or I don't know why I didn't say anything to him but normally if that's happened which it has a lot I'll just talk about it straight away I don't really find it embarrassing I more just find it annoying that I have to go and get changed but I think it is good to talk about these things because for some people it would be debilitating like they would never want to leave the house so makes you feel better you're definitely not the first person on this show that's pooed their pants. I mean I've done it and like I don't actually have any I didn't fall from from the sky. She just drinks too much wine. I just had too many burritos and had a good time. Anyway let's start at the beginning. What happened and how did this
Starting point is 00:24:53 trip come about like start your story from the start. Always a good place. Yeah so I was 20 and at that age I just wanted to travel the world like I didn't know what I wanted to do for work or anything all I knew is I wanted to travel. So I spent a year just working saving up and then I only had a one-way ticket because I didn't know how long I was going to stay over there so flew to Europe and at the beginning I did a top deck trip and it was only like I don't know maybe the third day of the top deck trip like it was really close in and we got to Switzerland and we decided to go skydiving so yeah we go skydiving and I was love adrenaline and I was just really keen to do it so we jump out of the plane and I remember just loving it so much like absolutely
Starting point is 00:25:35 loving it well out of the helicopter sorry and I was jumping with my best friend Gemma it was just us two and I jumped first and then they tell you that they're going to tap you on the shoulder when they pull the chute so I feel a tap on my shoulder and then I didn't I didn't know what to expect because I'd never done it before but all I felt was just like my hair be pulled backwards like yanked back and I was like it's weird that no one tells you he's getting kinky while we're free falling I'm like weird no one tells you that it's gonna hurt and it's like oh okay whatever and I was like okay that's interesting but I didn't have anything to compare it to and then we kept falling we didn't slow down so I was like okay maybe there's another
Starting point is 00:26:12 part coming and then so I was kind of yelling out to him and he wasn't replying and again I just thought maybe he can't hear me because the wind rushing past and then the closer we got to the ground the more I realized I was like I feel the chute should be open by now like we're getting very close to the ground and we're still free falling and then it wasn't until I saw the parachute in front of me I just saw this red tangled up parachute like in a ball in front of me not above me and I was like oh okay that's the moment when I realized something was really wrong and so I just kept calling out to him and he wasn't responding and at that point I didn't I didn't know why I thought that he was maybe trying to do something to fix it still but then there was
Starting point is 00:26:52 a point where we we were just so close to the ground that I was like even if it does open now like there's absolutely nothing that could slow us down in time but it didn't open we just kept falling and I just remember so vividly thinking like holy shit I'm about to die like I was just on a holiday I didn't expect I was gonna die today and then we hit the ground and to my surprise I didn't die I didn't even get knocked unconscious I was completely awake and yeah well that's where that part of the story ends i i'm just have goosebumps i'm like i'm but i have so many questions yeah can i okay can i i guess when you're telling the story that you're free falling and obviously the first half of this free fall because i mean a skydive doesn't take
Starting point is 00:27:38 that long it's not a long time period so for the first half there's no panic there's no worry because you don't think anything's wrong it surprises me in that short time from when you realized when you hit the ground from because I've watched your videos and I've listened to your talk and so many thoughts were going through your head I feel like you came from this what's going on to okay he'll fix it to turning around realizing that the man that is literally the only person that can save you is unconscious behind you strapped to your back to holy shit I'm gonna die I'm not ready to die to hitting the ground I feel like you have just gone through this entire thought process what were those seconds like like do you actually vividly remember
Starting point is 00:28:18 yeah every every feeling and thought yeah and because I wasn't knocked out at all it's just clear as day in my mind and yeah there were so many parts that you mentioned but that last part itself the part where I realized I was about to die that alone seemed like it lasted so long it's like time wasn't real like it didn't flow like it normally did so in those last few seconds I just remember feeling I guess regret is the word I was like I can't believe that I've lived 20 years and I've never just stopped to be thankful that I'm alive like I wasn't really a positive person back then I was so young so I'm sure I would have like you know grown into one eventually but I just never really appreciated anything I never loved life I never just made the most of everything
Starting point is 00:28:59 and I just remember thinking like how ironic that I'm realizing now when I have 10 seconds left to live and I just felt yes such regret at that what was it like when you when you'd hit the ground you realized you weren't dead and you had this guy who was supposed to be the instructor was unconscious and strapped to your back what happened then what was the next part of this yeah so I landed on my belly and he strapped to my back so he landed on top of me and I couldn't get up because of the weight of him on me but I could kind of look around and I could see that we bit just in the middle of the swiss alps like there was no buildings there was no people there was nothing i could see so my first thought was oh my god like how are we going to get found no one's
Starting point is 00:29:41 coming here that wasn't where we were supposed to land you could have landed in a river and drowned you could have landed on a road yeah considering we were in the swiss alps we actually landed in probably the best spot like a patch of grass whereas there was a bitumen road like maybe one or two meters next to me there was a river not to mention like all the mountains and even i've thought about it in the past and i'm like oh maybe landing in a in a lake would have been better but i don't think so because i think the weight of the parachute would have dragged us under him on my back so i can't imagine you would not have drowned in that situation exactly so i think it was the best case scenario you landed you just said you landed on your like face down like stomach first
Starting point is 00:30:18 do you just ask the universe all the time how are you did you not knock yourself out yeah it's like a pancake it's like how are you not dead i feel like it's a lot of pressure to have that thought too because I'm like I survived something no one should be able to survive like what am I what do I do with that what do I it's my purpose I find that so overwhelming too because I'm like oh my god I have to make this the most amazing life ever like I'm so lucky which I am so what actually happened in your understanding to the parachute what was the reason it didn't open because you've turned around and clocked that he's unconscious has he just passed out or what happened yeah so I didn't know this at the time I didn't know this until maybe the next day when the investigators
Starting point is 00:30:52 came to see me in hospital but what had happened is so basically there's two parachutes in the backpack and there's the one that comes out automatically that comes out when they pull it and that's all you should ever need but then there's also an emergency one which comes out automatically at a certain altitude if the other one hasn't opened so I guess that's in case the instructors I don't know fainted or something the other one will automatically come out but what happened is my instructor forgot to wear his altimeter which tells you how high you are he pulled our parachute too late I think and it was only one second too late they figured out one second too late and so at the time that it was coming out happened to be the exact same time
Starting point is 00:31:30 the emergency one was coming out so they came out together got all tangled and as they were coming out the cords wrapped around his neck and strangled him so that's why he was unconscious and that also explains why it was just tangled up in a ball rather than open and slowing us down so possibly possibly if he had have just pulled it a second or two earlier they might not have got tangled yeah yeah that's what they tell me they're like it's just one second yeah it's almost like don't tell me that and they didn't tell me the one second part until years later someone just said it to me casually and I was like can you not yeah like come on dude but also it's one of those huge things where you think about it and like life really can change in one second like it's all
Starting point is 00:32:11 it takes it's so incredible and one of the reasons why we were so looking forward to interviewing you is because of what an incredible positive outlook you have on everything that has happened but that outlook could be very different I think that you not only when you say like I feel like I have this huge responsibility of what do I do with my life that I've been afforded a second chance of living but people still don't necessarily always walk away from these huge life events and have that perspective so going back to when you were laying on the ground when was it that you realized you couldn't feel your legs so when no one was I realized no one was coming I was like okay I at this stage I thought the instructor must be dead because he wasn't responding he wasn't moving he
Starting point is 00:32:48 survived just so everyone knows so I was like okay it's up to me to go and find help so I tried to I was like okay how do I get him off my back so I tried to roll over to get him off but it was in that moment when I tried to roll over that I realized I was completely paralyzed from the waist down so I was and it was it's so confusing because I didn't automatically think oh okay I've broken my back my legs don't work I was just like trying to move as I had done for 20 years and it just wasn't working it was so confusing and so I was like okay I'll try just lift up my legs underneath him nothing and I tried to just wriggle my toes I tried to do anything and it just wasn't working at all which was so bizarre well first of all I thought maybe I'm dead like maybe this is
Starting point is 00:33:30 I don't know some weird heaven so the whole thing was so confusing that I definitely didn't have a clear thought pattern of okay I broke my back I'm paralyzed this is what's happening I just thought like my body must be in shock I don't know why I don't know but I'm sure I will be fine eventually and you're in a foreign country you're so far away from like your family your friends your normal support networks who if something crazy did happen would be there to be able to help you through it so how did it then follow on how were you found and what was it like the following days after this event when you've realized I'm paralyzed I'm not going to be able to use my legs I think that the fact that I was overseas is what made it so odd as well because already when you're
Starting point is 00:34:11 overseas I don't know if everyone feels like this but I do life kind of doesn't feel real anyway it's like oh I'm in this fantasy world and my real life is still back home and so even when I was in hospital there was a part of me that's like oh no it's fine like when I get home everything will be normal again so it yeah it just made it all seem not real but eventually Gemma who I jumped with her instructor must have noticed we landed in the wrong spot so they followed us down they found us and called an emergency helicopter so we got flown out of there to a hospital in Bern and then I went straight into surgery and that's when they operated on my spine my pelvis was also broken and I broke my sternum and my sacrum but I always get these words
Starting point is 00:34:52 confused with scrotum you don't you don't have a scrotum I'm just gonna say that I broke my scrotum every time I'm like sternum sacrum sternum sacrum yep yep as someone who my job is literally to x-ray and ct and do the theater stuff so like you are 100 you've got that right so I broke all these other things and yeah my mom and sister flew over from Australia and they got there maybe two days later and then I had to stay in hospital for a month because in my second surgery they had to collapse my lung to reach my spine so with a collapsed lung you apparently don't know why I can't fly for a month so I had to wait until I could come back so did you have any other internal injuries in terms of like internal bleeding or bleeding on the brain because
Starting point is 00:35:34 I have had patients that have rolled out of bed so I'm talking two feet and they have had a bleed on their brain and if you tell me that you fell from the sky and didn't have any brain injury well no like none that has been diagnosed but I will say no I will say my memory has been shocking since then but it's weird when you break your back or there was an injury that was so obvious so many other things get overlooked like in the last few years even maybe this year I learned that I also broke my jaw back then and I had no idea so I do wonder what other things were going on that I'm sure they checked my brain so I'm sure my brain was fine but I don't know what other injuries I had that maybe were overlooked because of the severity of the spinal break how
Starting point is 00:36:19 do you cope with the following days like when you have been diagnosed and you come to terms or you I don't even know if you can come to terms with it right away but you've been told there's a chance you're not going to walk again. What's that like? Well, they didn't even say there's a chance. They were just matter of fact, like, no, this is permanent. This is how it's going. And it was tricky because they, the doctors could speak English, but we definitely weren't having a fluent conversation and it was harder to understand exactly what was happening. But yeah, when they said you'll never walk again, I just couldn't wrap my head around that because of just, yeah, because of how fast things changed and how fast it went from a fun holiday to the worst thing I'd
Starting point is 00:36:56 ever been through I just couldn't wrap my head around that and I didn't believe it and I don't say that in a way it's like oh I never believed I could walk again which is why I can walk again I just mean like I literally couldn't wrap my head around the fact that I would never get back on my feet and walk were you angry did you feel resentful like I mean I guess when you're in a situation like that it could be so not that it's easy nothing about that situation is easy and I can't even like put myself into your position to really understand what I would feel like but I can only imagine there would be a part of you that's really fucking angry at the instructor or at the system that something had gone wrong weirdly no I mean I felt anger but only maybe
Starting point is 00:37:35 in the past two years that all came up for me but in the beginning I never I'm not sure why but I never had that mentality of like why me I just kind of thought why not me like I chose to skydive that was a risk fair enough so I didn't feel angry I'm also felt like the instructor was also so badly injured and he I imagined would have felt so much regret and so deeply apologetic for what he'd done that I thought that that's enough I don't need to be angry at him as well so no I'm also just hoped that he was okay and I felt really bonded to him weirdly thinking that we'd both gone through this thing that no one else would ever you know experience but did you have any contact with him at that time or like what were his injuries did he break his back did he
Starting point is 00:38:20 yeah so he shattered both of his legs so what I imagine happened I have no idea but I think that because he was really tall and also he was unconscious so his legs would have just been dangling down so I think that maybe they hit first which is why we survived took some of the impact yeah maybe no idea that's just what I've pieced together yeah so when I was in hospital he was in the same hospital and he refused to see me for the whole month that I was there and I really wanted to see him because I just wanted to say like it's okay I forgive you it's all good but he didn't see me and then I was flying home the day that I was flying home and I was like begging the nurses I was like please just ask if he'll see me and then he I was about to leave like the ambulance
Starting point is 00:39:04 was there ready to load me in and then this man wheeled in in a wheelchair and I was like oh that's him and then we barely even spoke to each other because we don't speak the same language but we just held hands and just had a moment which was nice I'm about to cry I don't know if it's a hormones or not but I'm like he would have been so frightened I guess like in that you can only imagine that he would have felt so responsible for the injuries that you had suffered and was probably really frightened that you hated him or were angry all those things that like even that I think are very normal reactions to that experience so there was probably a lot of fear in seeing you again for the first time yeah but talk me through what it's like going from being so young like
Starting point is 00:39:47 going to live this like fantasy life overseas you know you've literally got the world at your fingertips to feeling like that's all being taken away from you how do you cope with that shift in your identity that was the hardest thing to come to terms with I felt like every part of my identity so my body and my physical abilities and before that I was really active like sport and fitness was my thing back then so that part of me was taken away also I had a boyfriend for three years who was obviously a big part of my life and he broke up with me at that same time so that part of my identity was taken away because what was his reasoning he didn't say so after the yeah after the accident yeah but yeah it was just every like every element of what I knew obviously
Starting point is 00:40:29 couldn't work anymore I couldn't do the hobbies that I loved so I felt like every aspect of who I was was taken away so I thought who like who am I and I guess going through a breakup when you know you go through something like this and you think the people who love you and around you are going to support you and then being thrust into and I know that the breakup shouldn't be the thing to hone in on this but I think there's a part of that that must leave you feeling like well now I'm fucking unlovable as well you know and then having to deal with like okay I have this disability and the person who I thought wanted to be with me it came with caveats he doesn't want to be with me anymore because of this well I was in hospital in Australia so it would have been within yeah
Starting point is 00:41:06 within three months maybe two months later I'm not sure but while I was in hospital but yeah I did feel that and being so young as well he was my first serious boyfriend so I didn't have yeah I didn't have anything else to compare it to when I thought or if he's not gonna let me through this and he knows me well like who will I listened to you this morning before you came here and you i i don't even know how to word i'll just say it but you said that you were just laying in bed and there was a nurse that was always in your room and you're like why isn't this nurse in anyone else's room why is she here with me 24 hours a day and it was because you were on suicide watch because you just didn't want to live anymore yeah and yeah i had no idea that's why she was
Starting point is 00:41:48 there so that was maybe the first two weeks that i was in switzerland i was so depressed i was so unhappy and I just thought there was no way that I could ever live a happy life if this was my scenario and obviously I don't feel that way now even if I wasn't walking but I just remember thinking that it's impossible to live a happy fulfilling life while I'm in a wheelchair and yes the nurse told me that I was on suicide watch because at any opportunity I was trying to throw myself out of the bed I was trying to rip all the cords out of my veins I was trying to just yet do anything telling the doctors not to save me not to operate on me and it was maybe two weeks oh the nurse actually said something to me which really changed my tune a bit she was just really
Starting point is 00:42:35 kind of savage to me she was because I said to her I was like oh you're obviously just in here because I can't walk and in my mind that was the worst possible injury I didn't know there could be anything worse so I was like oh that's why you're in here looking after me and she looked at me and just so blatantly in her German accent was like no there are other people who in this very hospital who are far worse off than you there's so many people who can do far less than just not be able to walk that's not why I'm in here and I was like I kind of needed that wake up call to be like okay this sucks but I'm alive and it could be worse it could be worse so you've come back to Australia and you've started your rehab journey how long and what did that look
Starting point is 00:43:16 like and were you within yourself like they've told me I'm not going to walk but I don't believe them I'm going to do everything I can to try to walk or was it more like okay I'm not going to walk but I'm just going to try everything I can to live the best possible life in a wheelchair yeah and at first I kind of thought walking was the only scenario that would be good for me I was like okay I'm gonna go to physio twice a day do everything else that they taught me and I'll try to get better and then one day I met this guy who had his accident two years earlier and he we were just talking and then he said to me something about how he'd never be happy unless he could walk again and that was two years on from his accident and I remember thinking oh that's how
Starting point is 00:43:56 I feel too but something in the way he said it just really hit me and I was like wait I don't want to put my happiness on this one thing like what if I don't walk again am I just gonna never try and have a happy life and so after that moment I vowed to myself to always you know work on my mental and emotional recovery first and if I did happen to get better then then that was great but I didn't want to completely shut off the possibility that life could still be good even if I didn't get better I want to read something that you wrote which I read it today when we were prepping for the interview and it actually made me cry so yeah I really did maybe I'm also very hormonal I'm still breastfeeding but it really perfectly put into
Starting point is 00:44:38 words like the reason why I wanted to get you onto the podcast and it said I used to be one of those people who would wake up and unconsciously go about their day someone who would look at the sunset and feel unaffected someone who is living but not really alive now I wake up and I look forward to the day I can barely look at a sunset without crying I am so excited to be alive and I am the luckiest person in the world I found a way to see beauty in absolutely everything the world the people the emotions the lessons and I feel a kind of happiness which I had never experienced before my accident I'm so excited to live and I can't wait to share it with you all when did that change happen when did that shift when you realize you know what regardless of this disability
Starting point is 00:45:15 I'm really fucking stoked to be here and this is what it's about I think it was after that conversation I had with the guy that I was just talking about I think when I realized like when I really put in effort to healing emotionally and thinking I'm gonna make life good regardless of what the outcome is with me physically I just started to just notice things that I hadn't before like this sounds really dumb but I don't think I ever realized that the sun set every single day and that I could choose to go outside and watch it like I had just never thought about that before and I think what really helped me even though it was hard to go through at the time was the fact that I was awake for the fall and that I have full memory of that and I have full
Starting point is 00:45:55 memory of me thinking I had 10 seconds left to live so going from 10 seconds left to live to realizing I have the rest of my life it just gave me such an appreciation and such a different perspective to look at life through when I thought about that and I thought about how lucky I am I was like yeah like there's still a lot to be grateful for here so I switched the perspective from what have I lost like what yeah I've lost my legs I've lost my boyfriend I stopped thinking about that and instead thought what have I still got and I realized I still have the use of my arms I still have my brain I still have my mind I still have my family and then I even started wondering like okay is there anything I've actually gained from this and at first I thought
Starting point is 00:46:39 no of course not there's nothing good that's come from this but when I really thought about it I realized I'd gained heaps like I'd gained so much strength that I never knew I had I'd gained appreciation for my body which I never took the time to think about and I'd gained the knowledge that I survived something unsurvivable and I guess in that we all have the propensity to spend too much time on our phones or to not be fully engaged with our friends or not really just be present in the moment and I think like not that I'm gonna say like this is a blessing in disguise I don't think anyone's gonna say oh I'd love to fall out of a plane to really learn that life lesson but to be able to have an experience like that which then completely changes your
Starting point is 00:47:20 outlook on life and your just your zest for living it is incredible like it's truly just like the most remarkable thing and I think that there's so many people who will go through life barely actually engaging in it and just kind of surface level getting through and then you get to experience so much more from that now and I and I really enjoy and I really have loved reading some of the things that you've put together and going on your Instagram and seeing just like what positive outlook you have because of something that's been so hugely traumatic that's happened well thank you And that is actually why I talk about it, because I don't want people to have to go through something so horrific to learn what I did.
Starting point is 00:47:53 I want to talk to you now about your sort of, I guess, long lasting injuries, because whilst you can walk again and for anyone that doesn't know what Emma looks like, she's ridiculously good looking. It's like, it's disgusting. I was like, where are we going? It's disgusting. No, because it's like, it's disgusting how good looking you are. You're so fit.
Starting point is 00:48:11 You look amazing. You waltzed in. you have a disability but anyone that would look at you that would be like you don't have a disability that's why everyone was pointing at me when I shit in the street look at this really hot chick doing a shit in the street but that's that's so bloody good that's what I want to talk about because I want to talk about the idea of breaking stigmas around disabilities firstly talk us through the things that we can't see on the outside that you struggle with day to day the main part of my injury that's still
Starting point is 00:48:43 affects me is the loss of bladder and bowel control so when I first had my accident and my legs were starting to get better they're like oh cool like your bladder and bowel might get better too I was like great but it just now it's been eight years later and still hasn't changed at all so for me that means I need to use catheters and when I was in hospital I had a catheter bag like one that was permanently attached to me and it just stayed in me all I had to do was empty the bag which was fine but now I use what's called intermittent catheters so it's basically just like a straw that I take out of a packet put up my urethra drain it into the toilet and then throw it out so it's good because I don't have to have anything attached to me and then for the bowel
Starting point is 00:49:23 it's honestly the worst like every day I'm so used to doing it now but it's just I'll never wake up and think can't wait to do it people don't know what happens or like how does somebody who is paralyzed go to the bathroom or like and this is something you have to deal with every single day which is why it's so great that you're so open with it totally because I think that it's the not knowing that means that people struggle to understand like well if there's no disabled person here why can't I use a disabled toilet like that's you know something that I think a lot of people will think when they've just popped in to use one yeah so for me to go to the bathroom and by the way the reason I like talking about it and I don't feel awkward talking about it is
Starting point is 00:50:00 because what I've learned is if I feel awkward the other person feels awkward where if I'm open about something the other person's like oh okay it's fine for us to talk about this like you know what I mean it just makes it better for everyone so for the bowel stuff it's called a manual evacuation so I have to like put on a glove and then literally just put my finger up there and like pull it all out get it out get it and can you feel when you need to do that or do you have to just go and see if it's like every couple hours if it's time well I'll do it every morning but then with the catheters I can't yeah I can't feel when I need to go at all so I just kind of assess how much I've drank but generally I'll do a catheter every hour right yeah and you have no
Starting point is 00:50:39 feeling which also blows my mind but you don't actually have any feeling from the waist down do like you can't actually feel your legs or your feet yeah which I never would have realized was possible but the yeah the sensory and the motor nerves are different so even though I can't move I still can't feel which in the beginning was really tricky to learn balance because you use so much of the feeling in your legs to balance but now I guess I've kind of just got the hang of it but the way that affects me now is if I get a cut or something and I can't feel it I don't automatically know that something's wrong so I have to be careful I have to check my legs and the bottom of my feet and make sure that there's nothing going on there but on the other main part
Starting point is 00:51:18 that still affects me is even though I am walking a lot of my muscles are still much weaker and my calves are actually still fully paralyzed so I can't go up on my toes which means I can't run and I can't jump, and I walk with a limp. That side of it, I feel like the hardest part to deal with is the bladder and bowel, just because it's constant all day. If someone had told you 10 years ago that you would be paralyzed, that you wouldn't have, even if when you can walk again, you wouldn't have any feeling below the waist, and that you would be incontinent, how do you think former you would have reacted to that information? I would not have thought I'd be able to deal with it, and people often say to me like there's no way I could go through what you went through as I said
Starting point is 00:52:02 before I wasn't a positive person at all and I didn't think I would be able to to handle something like this but I think the incredible thing is that no one knows what they're capable of until they're put in that situation and often we don't learn our own strength until we are forced to use it I think so many people are actually so much more capable at dealing with things than they actually give themselves credit for my brain's like I'm 100 miles an hour I could talk to you hours one thing I do want to ask about is what the next few years looked like for you in terms of not your recovery but I mean it is recovery as well but your dating life was there a moment at the start where you were like I'm unlovable I'm never going to date again I'm never going to have
Starting point is 00:52:41 sex again and then to the point where you did start dating how did you navigate that was what were the feelings like uh to be honest it wasn't that big of a deal for me I wasn't really that nervous to to date again or anything and everyone that I have dated it's not that many people but everyone's been great like I've never had bad experiences where people treated me differently or people actually the way that people do treat me differently isn't in a negative way as such but I did notice that people would kind of just treat me like I was so precious like I'm this angel that fell literally you're literally the angel that fell from the sky please tell me no one's ever used that pickup line on you oh my god all the time all people like did it hurt I'm like
Starting point is 00:53:22 yeah fucking did dating world has been pretty fine what do you wish people better understood about living with a disability I would say just that you're the same person that you were beforehand or even if people have been born that way like I think we put people with disability in a different bracket like we can't relate to them in any way or they're so different to us whereas really it's just something that they have to live with but they're still them they're still person and so I would just say the key is not treating people differently because of that just talk to them as you would talk to anyone else and don't yeah don't shy away from things I don't necessarily I don't think and this is just me talking personally but I don't think it's offensive
Starting point is 00:54:03 for someone to ask me a question about my disability and I imagine a lot of people feel that way as well obviously it's the way you ask the question but I think people like to be able to talk about it rather than just shying away from a lot of people would look at you and find it very difficult to understand that you do have a disability or they may put you into a whole different basket and be like oh but you're fine so how do you deal with that when it is something that you do have to deal with on a day-to-day level but your disabilities may be disregarded by people who are observers I used to kind of get quite annoyed by it because yeah I could have just I don't know come from home where I've fallen over or you had an accident or whatever it is
Starting point is 00:54:41 and I'm having a really rough day and then I will use my disabled pass at the shops because I can't walk as far as other people and then someone will yell at me for using it and I'm like man I like and I felt the need to explain to them like no this is what I've just been through like this is what's going on for me and I really I felt like I needed people to know that about me like to validate me but now now if you have someone yells at me for using my disabled pass I literally just walk away I'm like you don't actually need to know everything like I know what I'm going through and I know like how hard it is some days but I don't feel the need to over explain it to people let's talk boobies oh yeah we love some titty talk here at Life Uncut
Starting point is 00:55:23 no but you got breast implants and guys I know you're thinking Brittany where's this going leave the poor girl alone you got breast implants but I'm just going to read something that you did say you got breast implants because you wanted one part of your body to be perfect because the rest was broken but then you went and got them taken out I don't remember writing that I don't know where I got it from but it's in quotes so I've read it from one it's in one of your blogs I said it yeah so me okay this is such a weird topic I had breast implants for maybe two years and I fully just don't ever remember having them it's like it's part of I think because I never enjoyed having them I never even it wasn't something I really wanted so that part of my life is just a
Starting point is 00:56:04 blur I'm like what a weird thing that I did but so how it started is would have been maybe four years ago now I'd never considered it but my friend was going to an appointment and she's like oh do you want to come to this appointment with me like just for moral support and I was like sure by the end of that appointment I was booked you're like two for one I'll do it literally and it's weird I'd never been self-conscious about my boobs I'd never thought about it before but I think it was just that thing as at that time I was having so many surgeries on my bladder my back other things and I was going through stuff with a big court case and I was like I want to do something that I'm in control of like I want to do a surgery for not for a medical reason just for me
Starting point is 00:56:44 like just for something that I want to do because I chose to yeah because I chose to so that's the only reason I think that I did but it was such a it was a decision that I didn't look into very thoroughly and that's I think where I made a mistake because after it was basically within the first month of having them things in my body just started to change I put on heaps of weight my hair started falling out I had psoriasis all over my face and my back and my arms and I just was so tired all the time and again because I was having so many other surgeries at that time I was like oh maybe you know who knows this is just a symptom of what else is going on in my life but then it was probably two years later I started reading about breast implant illness which I'd
Starting point is 00:57:26 never in my life heard of before and I still to be honest don't have a heap of information on it just what I've read and what other people have shared with me but I started reading into it and it said that our body can start to reject foreign objects like breast implants which makes sense and I think because I also have a lot of metal in my spine and my hip and other places there's already so many foreign things in my body that my body just couldn't handle something else so I looked into it a bit more and then I decided to get my breast implants out and to be honest I never enjoyed having them I didn't feel like me they just felt really really big and really really I don't know I didn't resonate with having them how big did you go well I don't know what
Starting point is 00:58:09 they are called but I feel like it was 400 something right like cc's cc's that sounds so I decided to get them out and honestly within like the first month of having them out I felt like a different person I just felt like me again and even besides how I felt physically when I looked in the mirror I was like oh yeah that's me like I just felt better for it so what advice do you have for someone then maybe just do your research first do your research because that's the thing like everyone I'm not against breast implants I'm not against any form of plastic surgery I think people do what you want to do like power to you it's more just the fact that I didn't at all look into it and I wish that I had heard about this beforehand so I could have
Starting point is 00:58:48 researched and then made a more informed decision. But also I think there's a lot of people who have experienced breast implant illness and because it's not something that's widely talked about at all it takes them a really long time to kind of connect the dots that that's where that issue is coming from. I know someone who suffered with it for years before they realized actually maybe it's because of having breast implants and having silicon or whatever it was at the time. exactly like you said like I mean we advocate on here do whatever the hell you want if it makes you feel good about yourself but like also know that there are complications and things that can come from these decisions as well yeah exactly something that I never realized before I got
Starting point is 00:59:25 implants is even besides the breast implant illness that you could do something to your body and feel like a different person like I know that a lot of people when they alter their bodies in it in any way they feel better for it and it gives them confidence which is great but I would also I just love people to know that sometimes it does the opposite. Like you could look in the mirror and be like, I don't recognize that person. And that for me was the hardest part to come to terms with. I was like, oh, that's, that's not me. I think, you know, as much as we live in this world where we're so accepting of plastic surgery, we're so accepting of tweaking and changing and bettering ourselves. I just think like, maybe be really conscious of the reasons why you're
Starting point is 01:00:00 doing something. Are you doing it for you? Or are you doing it because there's a deep-seated insecurity it's someone else or something else has made you feel and if that's the reason then maybe work on your self-worth more than working on your outer appearance so yeah I think the intention behind it is what's important because some people I know that they have done it and have thought about it for a while and something they've always been self-conscious of and then they've done it and they feel amazing and have this confidence I think the main message is just really think about it think about why you're doing it and then make an informed decision that's just a great segue em because I want I want to ask you no I just wanted to ask you what
Starting point is 01:00:33 your tips are for people because I feel like more women than not unfortunately we struggle with body confidence and we struggle with loving ourself how we are and living our best life and I think seeing ourselves how other people see us what are your tips for anyone that's really going through a hard time with that so well this is maybe like a harsh truth but so here's what I I don't know see for me since my accident I have not at all had any body self-conscious issues like I like I think I look great love that no but let me tell you why because when I was in hospital no when I was on the ground after the accident and my legs weren't working before my accident I was only 20 but I was super fit loved the gym loved to go running so I had quite muscly legs and I remember
Starting point is 01:01:16 pre-accident being like oh I wish my legs weren't so muscly whereas when I was laying there on the ground and my legs weren't working I was like I couldn't give a fuck what my legs looked like I would take any legs regardless of what they looked like as long as they worked like all I wanted was a body part that worked so from that moment any time I did have an insecurity on my body I would straight away be like okay but what does that body part do for me and I would change I would like flick the switch from just instead of looking at my body as an object to looking at it as like the vessel that lets me experience life so like if you don't like your eye color think of what it enables you to see you know what I mean it's just changing the perspective of what
Starting point is 01:01:56 your body can do and realizing that the way it looks is the most like irrelevant part about any of it and it's like you would never walk into a spinal ward and complain about the way that your legs look or you would never go up to a quadriplegic who can't even move their hands and complain about a part of your body or you'd never go into a burns unit and complain about your skin you know what i mean so it's just i don't know i i just gave me this confidence not to think like oh i'm the hottest person in the world but just more so that it doesn't matter like it doesn't matter what i look like so i don't put a focus on it it doesn't even cross my mind it's so obvious what a profound impact this has had in your life and in your outlook on life and for what you want to
Starting point is 01:02:36 bring and do for other people as well yeah and I think sometimes we do experience things in life and and even though we could go back and change them maybe the trajectory that they've put us on was important and there was purpose to it so I kind of want to pick your brain a little bit about how you feel about your accident in totality yeah well there's yeah there's no doubt in my mind that I am a better person for it and then I have a more full life because of what happened and I'm not saying I wouldn't have got to that stage without it like maybe it would have just taken you know 10 more years for me to find my confidence in myself as much as that propelled me to do the obvious answer that comes to my mind is yeah I would do it again because I'm so much better for
Starting point is 01:03:18 it and so much good has come from it but on the other hand I wouldn't just you know get up there and be like woo throw me out like because realistically it's been so hard and even especially the first few years but even now just so many things that I have to live with every day I'm not gonna lie and be like yeah it's so cruisy and I love it like it is hard it's like that movie I can't remember the name of it but where something bad happens and he constantly he's got the opportunity to go back in time and change the event so to stop it from happening oh the butterfly and every time every time he goes back in time and he changes it to stop that situation from happening something worse happens and until finally you realize that okay this is this was
Starting point is 01:03:59 just the way it was supposed to be yeah exactly and I don't think you can live like that either I don't think you can live thinking if I did it the day before if I did it the day after if I did it I know you wanted to do it in Sydney before you left and it'd be so easy to be sucked into this like toxic whirlpool well it's that one second right like thinking well what if it had been one second earlier that's like the mindset I mean it's a very dangerous mindset and it's not helpful but I still think it's so amazing your outlook that you have. It's incredible the positivity that you have managed to bring with you out the back of such adversity.
Starting point is 01:04:29 And you know that, no, it truly is. I'm proper inspired. And I know that like when you say, other people say to you, oh, I could never ever do what you've done or I could never be able to be as positive as you are going through the circumstances that you've been through. It's like, I really love what you said.
Starting point is 01:04:44 And I think it's almost a nice thing to end on. Like we don't know what we're capable of until we're put into that situation. and what you have been capable of is amazing and just to finish it off we love love here at life uncut i love love we love love so much bloody love love where are you at in your life are you in love are you dating you're in a relationship yes so i've been with my boyfriend tummy for two years uh we live together in love great guy great guy oh cutesy times really that's all i needed to hear to wrap that up well thank you so much for coming on today we really really appreciate it i
Starting point is 01:05:16 I have been wanting to speak to you for so long so I'm really grateful that you gave us the time today I feel like I could keep talking all day I know totally yeah where can people find you and what's your Instagram have you written a book yet have you my Instagram is m underscore Kerry and I am currently writing a book oh that was a joke on my behalf I love that yeah I just love to write when to talk love to write when can we maybe see that I don't know yeah you're like It takes a lot longer than I thought. I don't know. I haven't even...
Starting point is 01:05:48 You're like, well, I've got the heading. Em, thank you so much for coming on. Thank you so much for sharing your story. Thanks for having me. I think that so many people will get something out of this. It's very grounding and it's a real fucking reality check when so many people have such wonderfully privileged lives to be able to go, yeah, like if you are able to overcome it
Starting point is 01:06:05 and live in such a positive way, then you know what? Like you said, my shitty skin or my whatever it is that's the thing that's upsetting you today is really not a big deal. to thank you for being a part of this thank you very much it is time for our second favorite segment and you know what i think we say every segment's our favorite because when we get there we're like we froth this this is our favorite segment it is suck and sweet we don't ever finish an episode without it i do it at my dinner table now i know my whole family does sherry does it at the dinner table it's our highlight and our
Starting point is 01:06:37 low light of the week the best thing and the worst thing it's just a way to regroup on the week laura do you want to go first what is your suck mate I wish I could come to this podcast with a different suck but every week is the same it's the same I am in Sydney nothing happens except now we have 800 cases and it's not getting any better oh there is no end in sight oh look doom and gloom we've just brought you a positive uplifting episode and here we are talking about COVID at the end I'm going to scoot over my suck but my suck was that Marley was sick last week that's why I missed out and doing the Ask Uncut episode that's why producer Keisha stepped in unfortunately because she was sick I don't know if other mums would have to have dealt with this but like if you don't have
Starting point is 01:07:19 kids you probably haven't experienced anything like this but like kids have a very specific type of COVID test that needs to be done and they can only have it done at the children's hospital if they're under five years so on Thursday I had to line up for three hours to get Marley a COVID test and trying to keep a two-year-old who's sick standing in a line keeping them entertained it was just a nightmare so that was my suck of the week my highlight of the week is that the weather in Sydney the weather everywhere it is still technically winter guys and it is insane which also makes me wildly anxious about global warming but like we'll just save that suck for next week let's be real I can't believe it's three hours for a COVID test for your child that is bonkers
Starting point is 01:07:58 I don't think it's meant to be that long like it's actually seems pretty unreal it's an unreasonable thing to expect a two-year-old to have the patience to wait for three hours and every other parent there was like getting irate about it and it's one of those times where you're like am I expecting too much like am I expecting special treatment for my children or is this not acceptable like it wasn't a good week but you know what we're onwards and upwards I'm glad I'm look I'm glad little mm doesn't have COVID obviously but it sucks that you had to wait my suck oh I actually i have a pretty solid suck uh you guys wanted jordan to come on the podcast you wanted to meet him you had questions for him you had questions for me so we recorded i it has been hard work
Starting point is 01:08:41 for me to get him on the podcast in between playing we finally sat down and i was like you need to do this because people want to hear from you and like all i'm going to say is i can make no promises for that episode he is not a natural podcaster it's a bonus it is a bonus episode and we're doing it because you guys want it that's my disclaimer uh bless his soul finally came to sit down and do the podcast and I I checked it at the start I did the test we're supposed to do everything was fine what I didn't do was listen to it back when I finished it I just sent it off to producer Keisha and I was like here's here's the edit Keisha like do your best to make him sound amazing she wrote back she's like thank you for this but it's there's only Jordan's audio like
Starting point is 01:09:21 you're not on the podcast and I was like what what the fuck I just did an interview for an hour and a half like I'm on the podcast my microphone after an hour and a half I just talked non-stop my microphone cord broke and a little bit of the cable fell out and nothing was recorded so I did an hour and a half record with Jordan I finally got him there he frothed it he did really well and now I've got nothing to give you and I have to do another re-record oh my god that was my it just means that he's going to be so well versed and much more experienced he's going to give an even better interview actually it's such a lie we always say that like if you don't nail it the first time and then there's a mistake you can never recreate the magic you can never
Starting point is 01:09:58 recreate the magic and i said that to him i was like look we're gonna have to do it again but i don't want you to think about what you said i don't want you to try and say the same things that you've said you just have to start fresh because you can't recreate it just say whatever comes to your mind so anyway that will be coming to you again once we can sit down and re-record it maybe it was a sign the universe is like they are not ready for jordan thompson and my sweet like keep that man on the tennis courts not behind a microphone this is the guy who also like the one something that you guys don't know is like jordan hates doing interviews so even like when he finishes matches he hates speaking to media he doesn't like being like the
Starting point is 01:10:33 face of things and brit's like hey come on a podcast and talk about our relationship to hundreds of thousands of people it'll be great you'll love it so i'm sure he hated it for a second bless his soul like he's so happy to do that for us and he's like you know and if people actually want to sure i'll do it and he's like i'll do it for you britney because i want to make you happy but like laura said he he doesn't do social media he doesn't do interviews he wants to play his tennis and he wants to do nothing else but anyway i hope you guys learn something once we actually get the podcast out and i hope it gives you another little insight just into who he is and what our relationship's like and why i'm just obsessed with him and my sweet guys my
Starting point is 01:11:08 sweet was i guess it was my birthday another year older every year and i've spoken about in the last few years on the podcast every year I get really sad on my birthday and I've always thought same as Christmas my birthday and Christmas I've always thought you know next year or this coming year I'm going to be with someone special I'm going to be someone that I love I'm going to have a partner I'm not going to be alone I'm not going to be the loser that's on the kids table at Christmas I'm going to have someone to hang out with and and to feel special and it never happened it was like you know eight nine ten years in the making and then this year it was my first year that I was with somebody that I love and that loves me and I felt it felt really nice to actually have that
Starting point is 01:11:48 and I forgot what it felt like so that's 100% my sweet no doesn't it make everyone give you all the feels and thank you everyone I got so many messages from you guys too for my birthday and I if I haven't gotten back to you know that I read them all I honestly read every single message and I really really appreciate and I really felt the love so thank you to my beautiful life uncut family And guys, if you haven't yet jumped on and left us a review, we would so appreciate that you would go on there and not talk about circumcision. But if you want to give us five stars and talk about how much you love the podcast, that would be great. We love your feedback. We love knowing what we can do to improve.
Starting point is 01:12:23 And you know the drill. Whoever you want and share the love because we love love. I love that we put our hands up in the air every time like people can see us We'll be right back.
