Every week, I'm with survivors who live through the unthinkable, abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced. These are stories about what it takes to make it out alive.

Pro Society is a weekly podcast that's part book club, part group chat for anyone who thinks Pride and Prejudice and Love Island deserve the same level of discourse. Each week, we're connecting the dots between books, the internet, and pop culture with your favorite writers, book talk creators, and plenty of overthought opinions. Yeah, I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed. Listen to Pro Society on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Nick Turturro. You probably know me from NYPD Blue, The Longest Yard, or Spike Lee's Black Klansman.
Starting point is 00:01:25 And on my new podcast, Delivering Happiness with Nick Turturro, I deliver pizza to a new guest. I've shared a slice with everyone, from Seth Rollins. What are you doing with my belt? To Bill Burr. I don't think I've ever met somebody so exactly out of their mind as I am. And now, we even have more great guests coming up, including the great John Turturro. It's called happiness. Delivering happiness.
Starting point is 00:01:47 And many, many more. Open your free iHeartRadio app, search Delivering Happiness with Nick Turturro, and listen now. Hi. Hi, Katherine. Hi, Chelsea. Welcome to our mini, mini, mini, mini soads. Just like a teeny, weeny soad. Chelsea, I have a funny email from someone that totally relates to our Naomi Watts episode
Starting point is 00:02:06 that just came out. Maggie says, I can totally second that menopause is not all terrible. It's not all doom and gloom. I'm 58 and post-menopausal, and I'm here to tell you that menopause is something to look forward to. All caps, it is a gift. It's complete liberation from everything. The patriarchy wants us to think it's bad because we stop giving a shit about men once it starts. The pharmaceutical industry wants us to think it's bad because they can sell us meds for it, but it's awesome.
Starting point is 00:02:35 To quote Kristen Scott Thomas in Fleabag, I lead a very healthy life, and menopause is magnificent. So that's an exciting thing to look forward to. She also says, I have two vacation properties, Joshua Tree and Palm Springs, and I save all my Dear Chelsea episodes for when I'm driving to my properties. Oh, I love that. As soon as I get in the car, I tell Siri to play Dear Chelsea, and you and your guests are my company as I drive. Love it, Maggie.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Oh, that makes me happy. I love that. Yeah. Menopause Maggie. Yep. Menopause Maggie. Chelsea, we have two callers today for couples counseling. They are Kendall and Olivia.
Starting point is 00:03:11 Yeah, they are calling in from the East Coast and they say, dear Chelsea, this is Kendall writing in. My girlfriend and I are both 24 years old. We met at UNH and have been together for two and a half years. I live in Mass and she lives in New Hampshire and we can't decide on a third state to move to. I don't want to move back to New Hampshire as I went to school there and we don't want to stay in Mass as we've been doing long distance back and forth from both states.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Any help on how to decide on a third state to move to or any states you love being in? love you both so much thanks for any help kendall so we'll wait for olivia before we respond but i have thoughts i do too yeah right off the top of my head yes well what can get started we'll just wait for her to pop in and then we'll recap what about connecticut that's a good one i have been there a couple times before i mean if you're already on the east do you like the east coast like that eastern seaboard yeah yeah yeah i like that part of the country too that's kind of my that's where i'm from i'm from new jersey so it's not quite but i grew up on the cape so I like that vibe I like New Hampshire I like Massachusetts I think Connecticut is a nice
Starting point is 00:04:14 compromise between the two and it still has the same vibe that you're used to yeah yeah yeah definitely we've we've also gone to Portland Maine a couple times oh yeah Portland Maine is awesome it's like so fun and quaint but there's like tons especially for lesbians yes right yeah what don't you like about um hi hi we were just talking about we were just talking about your future and whether or not you're going to move to Connecticut or Maine. Sounds good. Yeah, those two we've been talking about a little bit. Portland, Maine, whenever I perform, whenever I go to Portland, Maine,
Starting point is 00:04:48 I always want an extra day there because, A, I just love that food, and I love Portland. I find that just to be just a cool, cool town all the way through. It's like a mini city, you know? It's totally manageable, and there's a lot of like-minded people there. You can pack up your lesbian Birkenstocks and just go up there together and hit it. Connecticut, I was mentioning, but Connecticut has certain parts that are really beautiful and certain parts that are a bit more rough.
Starting point is 00:05:15 And I'm thinking like the beautiful parts are really pretty expensive. But there are like cities like Hartford and, you know, there are cities in Connecticut that could be, I mean, it would be worth doing a little like trip where you guys go to like hang out in some cities in Connecticut, go to Stanford, go to Hartford, or you don't want to go to boston right because you're from mass yeah and we're we're not big city people okay okay so i would say go to portland first and see what the vibe is there if you guys like that go for a weekend and see how you like it there's no shortcut for saving time but saving money is simple just combine your car and home insurance with bel air direct and save get a quote at
Starting point is 00:05:58 fellerdirect.com When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and held captive for nine months. I survived, and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them. I'm Elizabeth Smart, and these are the Survivor Files. I just remember this low, taunting voice next to my ear saying, Shut up. Don't say anything. Every week, I'm with survivors who live through the unthinkable. I knew if he woke up, without a doubt, he was going to hurt me.
Starting point is 00:06:35 I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed, and I just started screaming. They are abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced. But these aren't stories about what's taken from them. They're stories about what it takes to make it out alive. Listen to The Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. If your bookshelf and your For You page are equally important to your personality, welcome home. This is Prose Society, the weekly podcast that's part book club, part group chat for thought daughters, pop culture obsessives, and anyone who thinks Pride and Prejudice and Love Island deserve the same level of discourse. I'm Eli Rallo, and every week we're connecting the dots between books,
Starting point is 00:07:24 the internet, and the conversations everyone can't stop having. I'm going to have to look up this story. I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed. From bestselling authors and your favorite book talk creators to the latest pop culture moments, nothing is off the table. It's like if you can hide some real messages inside compelling characters, then that is a Trojan horse. Whether you're looking for literary deep dives, smart pop culture conversations, or a community of readers who love to think a little too much,
Starting point is 00:07:52 you're in the right place. Listen to Pro Society on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. See you between the pages. On the new podcast, Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle.
Starting point is 00:08:14 I chose option B. I'm Julie Pinheiro, and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word solita, trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smiled at us.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Not a lot of people smile around here. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it. It can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind or wake up to a new version of yourself. So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What kind of stuff do you guys like to do? Are you hikers? What are you doing for fun time?
Starting point is 00:09:07 I feel like I'm more of like outdoorsy kind of stuff. I mean, but we both like doing the crafty side of things too like the pottery the wine sip and paint nights those kinds of things and and live's always been a big skier but i've never skied in my life chelsea believe it or not um but we want to get into snowboarding actually so what about vermont oh i haven't been to vermont like as an adult vermont's pretty cool i don't know where i haven't been to vermont in so many years i'm just trying to think of like what the main cities there are montpelier but vermont is cool and but once you're on the east coast then you can have access to those ski places i mean there's camelback there's a bunch there's you know in connecticut there's stowe there's killington
Starting point is 00:09:53 so you can have access to all those places once you're in that area and then there's a there's rhode island there's providence there's provincetown that's super gay yeah That's fun. I mean, I've been there a bunch of times and that's a blast. And Providence, Rhode Island is awesome. Yeah. I don't know what the cost of living is there. Like if it's expensive, I probably seemingly, but I'm sure, you know, there's areas in all
Starting point is 00:10:17 of these places that kind of go across the board from more affordable to less affordable. And if you do decide to venture away from the Eastern Seaboard, I will say Chicago is an amazing city to be young and gay in. It is a great place. You can head up to Andersonville, which is like a lot of cities have like a boy's town, but that's where all the lesbians live. Like, it's wonderful. That's funny.
Starting point is 00:10:40 Yeah. All the boys town. There are lots of lesbians. Yeah. Not a lot of cities have a spot for lesbians. Well, at least gay men are allowing gay women to take over versus straight men allowing straight women to take over. Right.
Starting point is 00:10:51 And then I would also say go to the other Portland, like check out Portland, Oregon. It's fantastic. There's lots of outdoorsy stuff, but also lots of creative people. But I love your idea, Chelsea, of like, go for a weekend, like do a three day weekend in a bunch of different cities, get an Airbnb, walk around. And make sure you incorporate all the things you love, you know, like make sure you incorporate the outdoorsy aspects and like the crafting aspects. Do your research before you go so that you can get all that stuff in.
Starting point is 00:11:19 Make sure you're going to the restaurants that you're interested in going to, the kind of style of food you like to eat. And so that you're experiencing the city and don't just stay in one area of that city. really, really take in the city. Yeah. Yeah, definitely. Thank you guys so much. Yeah. Best of luck and let us know where you settle. Okay. Or where you start visiting and love and that sort of thing. Okay. Yeah, definitely. And congrats on being together and being in a happy, successful relationship, girls. Thank you. Right. You don't hear that that often anymore. I know. It's nice to see though. All right. Have a great day and check
Starting point is 00:11:53 back. And Chelsea, can I just back up Brittany Broski and say thank you for the interview you with harry styles like when she said that i was like oh my god yes someone's noticing it doing the good work bye so cute oh wow that was a quick one okay wow one and done all in a day's work everybody all in a day's work we'll see you next time adios i survived nine months in captivity and i've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them i'm elizabeth smart and these are the survivor files every week i'm with survivors who live through the unthinkable abducted stalked controlled and nearly silenced these are stories about what it takes to make it out alive listen to the survivor
