Rebecca is a comic, actress, writer, and advocate. She's the founder of the Stand Up for Pits Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to educating,
Starting point is 00:02:46 and saving the lives of Pitbull-type dogs. She's also one of the women who spoke out against Lucy K in 2017. But so how did you two get reconnected? Oh. I'll tell you. Why don't you tell the story? Yeah, you tell the story. Well, first I want to tell you, I'm really proud of you, Chelsea.
Starting point is 00:03:04 Because I have to tell you, like, I'm not easy. I know that that's okay. Okay. And I'm older than you. I'm a senior. I'm 55 years old. Okay. So I have lost all patients for humanity and everything they stand for.
Starting point is 00:03:20 What do you, why do you say you're so, you're not easy? Why do you say that? Well, historically. I said I know because I know that's what you. think of yourself and you've said that. I watched your documentary and I... You did watch my documentary? Yeah. Saving Jones? Yeah, it was really, yes, yes. There were parts of it that I had to, you know, look away because I can't very sensitive with animals as you are as well, as many of us are. But yes, I, of course, yes. I wanted to prepare and understand
Starting point is 00:03:48 what you've been up to during this whole time because I knew you years ago doing stand-up. That's right. We did stand-up together. We did. 25 years ago. I moved here in 99. I actually, I think the first time I ever did stand up was when I auditioned for the new faces for the Montreal comedy festival. And I actually went, me and Kevin Hart were in the, we're in new faces together. Were you taller than him then at that point? He is approximately about a quarter inch taller. Oh. But if I had to take him, you know, I could. Yeah, I mean, yeah, he could easily be taken by a woman and nobody can dispute that.
Starting point is 00:04:24 I'm sure. So then after that 2001, I did stand up and then, yes, you and I did several shows together at the improv. Yeah. Yeah, but then, and, you know, then, you know, I did the stuff. I did the career. I did the stuff. And then a dog came into my life.
Starting point is 00:04:45 And Angel was the dog that sort of like changed the trajectory. Angel is the dog on the shirt. Yes. Tell us a little bit about that. She came into my life and then I started learning about how they're so discriminated against and how everyone fears them. Pit bulls. Yes, pit bull type dogs.
Starting point is 00:05:00 And I just could not believe that people were so horrified by them. and so willing to hate them and want them all dead and to victimize them. And they're the most abused and tortured dogs on the planet. And like, you know, 85% of them are like, you know, make up what's in shelters. And so I just couldn't believe it. You know, I'd be walking down the street. People would be bolting to the other side and, like, you know, saying, I hope that dog kills you. Like crazy stuff where I was like, this is crazy.
Starting point is 00:05:31 What is happening? And she was just nothing but love. You know, she was just born inherently good and changed everything. And then I, when I realized, like, how voiceless they were and how victimized they were and how mistreated they were, I just was like, it was just knowledge once I had. I was like, I can never, I cannot just move along. I have to do something. And so then I, you know, I started doing live events before I became a charity. I never wanted to become a charity.
Starting point is 00:06:00 And, you know, just inviting my stand-up comedy friends to perform. It became bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger. And then I organized a march on Washington. And that was amazing. And it really just solidified that that's what I need to be doing. So after about six years, I just chose like, you know, is this something that I really want to do for my life? Or just run a charity and do this as my job. This is my job.
Starting point is 00:06:28 Wow. Or do I want to, you know, and earn in a year what sometimes it would take me a week to earn. to earn. Choose that life. Do I want to choose that life or what do I want to do? And that's what I chose. Wow. Yeah. It sucks. So when you say you're a lot, why do you say that? When you say you're not easy, why do you say that? I say that when I'm dating in person. I'm like, listen, I'm a lot. So you might not be able to handle this. I could see that. Yeah. I'm a lot because I really, really, really, really, really don't give a fuck. And I really, really will say and do what I feel, even if I know that there is severe professional or personal consequences, I will. And so when you and I were having
Starting point is 00:07:14 our banter online, the reason that I said that to you was because I had posted a comment on your page, my comment was restricted on your page. And I was like unrestrict the comment. I want people to see the comment. Restricted. I wouldn't even know. how to restrict something. Someone must have. And it wasn't rude. I don't even think I said a swear word. Yeah, yeah, right. Because that's weird. And it wouldn't be like, I have so many negative comments on my page.
Starting point is 00:07:40 Right. Right. Right. It's from you. That's why I was so frustrated. I was like, that's not like her to do that. So anyways, that's how our banter started. But then it was later where I was like, I posted the Louis C.K. Okay. Right. Right. Right. Right. And that enrages me. That enrages me to this day because there's so much about that that is so insane that people don't know.
Starting point is 00:08:06 Not even a clue. Like, they don't even have a clue. So what angers me about it is that it's just like this narrative that there was this power being wielded over me. I'm not speaking for the other women. I'm speaking for me. There was this power, you know, this power that was wielded
Starting point is 00:08:21 and that we succumb to it because of the power. That's not the case. In my case, I'm speaking for me. That was not the case. I was a creator and a writer and a series regular on a television show that I sold with Courtney Cox at David Arquette. And he was a cast member that was hired for that day to shoot the pilot. Louis C.K. Correct. But it was not, it was. There was no power dynamic from his.
Starting point is 00:08:44 The only, from, no, the only power dynamic would be I was his boss, essentially. Right. And every time the guy farts in a certain direction, like, I am drug through hell. Like I am just like constantly, it's drudged back up. You're an unfunny, you know, cunt midget, hack, loser, you got paid. What you? You need attention. Like all of this stuff comes up and I'm drugged through it over and over. And it's just endless publicity about what he's doing.
Starting point is 00:09:15 And he's entitled to do whatever the fuck he wants. He is. He can go do whatever he wants. And that's fine. It does not affect my life in any way, shape, or form. So what bothers you about? that narrative that makes it so much that it was a yielding power or wielding power for for me and again I say that because I don't ever want to speak on behalf of any of the other women I was um you know I was
Starting point is 00:09:43 I was I sold a television show with it was legitimate that he was hired to be on for a day and he chose to do the behavior that he did and I chose to not shut down production I chose to keep going because everyone else was there working, doing their job. And you know how hard it is to sell a show. I just chose to not do that. That was my choice. I was given the choice what I wanted to do in that moment, and I chose not to do it.
Starting point is 00:10:07 I stand by that choice. But I just can't stand the narrative that it's just like I was this victim. It's just that when it's constantly said over and over and over in all of the press and on all of these huge podcasts with all of his home, and stuff, and they're all just perpetuating this narrative that it's like, you know, it's just, you know, it was just this thing and like, no big deal, NBD, and like these bitches just, you know, are climbers and they were weak and they just wanted something. It's like, that's not the case. That, for me, that is not the case. I was just doing, I was working on a television show, doing my job.
Starting point is 00:10:46 And what happened? I was walking to set. I was, I was, I was miced and I was walking to set to shoot my scene and he walked up to me and asked if he could jerk off in front of me in my dressing room. And I said, in the moment, I said, abs of fucking looting not. Get your face out of my face. It's super fucked up. No, that's all it was. And then production found out and shut it down and we had a long talk about it. And then they gave me the choice. Like, you know, do you, what do you want to do in this moment, you know? Did you know him? at all before that? No.
Starting point is 00:11:23 Like through comedy, stand-up? No. I'm very close with Dana and Julia. The other two women who had a different experience with him up in Aspen. They're in my documentary. You probably saw them. I wrote a piece about it during the whole thing that, you know, it just put you in a lose-lose situation. When someone does that to you, you are immediately involved in that realm and you can never get out.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Right. You are sucked into the vortex of that bullshit and you will never get out. Through no choice of your own. There is 100%. And also every guy like that will be like, well, yes, permission. That's what they'll say, you know, upon hearing this or having heard this. And with me, he did. But I am not the other women.
Starting point is 00:12:13 And other people have a lot of other stories. But for me, he did. And in that moment, I was like, absolutely fucking not. It's disgusting. What the fuck? Imagine walking to sex. It's just, and you know what? It's gone.
Starting point is 00:12:31 You know, it was a long, long time ago. And the reasons that I spoke were, for a lot of reasons, people don't understand. They would never even comprehend why I did. I spoke when I spoke. But I did. I have my reasons. They're justified. I wouldn't change it.
Starting point is 00:12:46 Do you want to talk about that? What your reasons are, or do you feel like you've already said that? I never have said it. The new Red Bull Dragonberry and Tropicberry Energizers, now at McDonald's, made with freeze-dried fruit and an electric burst of flavor. The all-new Red Bull Energizers, now at McDonald's. This product may not be right for you. High in caffeine, details at McDonald's.cai at participating Canadian restaurants,
Starting point is 00:13:14 excluding Quebec. When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and held captive for nine months. I survived, and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them. I'm Elizabeth Smart, and these are the Survivor Files. I just remember this low, taunting voice next to my ear saying, shut up, don't say anything. Every week, I'm with survivors who live through the unthinkable. I knew if he woke up, without a doubt, he was going to hurt me. I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed, and I just started screaming.
Starting point is 00:13:56 They are abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced. But these aren't stories about what's taken from them. There's stories about what it takes to make it out alive. Listen to the Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the new podcast, Solita, we share the message. reality of traveling alone as a woman. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I chose option B. I'm Julie Pinero and I travel by myself because
Starting point is 00:14:31 it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word solita, trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smiled at us. Not a lot of people. smile around here. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it. It can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind, or wake up to a new version of yourself. So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. If your bookshelf and your for you page are
Starting point is 00:15:18 equally important to your personality, welcome home. This is Prose Society, the weekly podcast that's part book club, part group chat for thought daughters, pop culture obsessives, and anyone who thinks Pride and Prejudice and Love Island deserve the same level of discourse. I'm Eli Rallo and every week we're connecting the dots between books, the internet, and the conversations everyone can't stop having. I'm going to have to look up this story. I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed. From bestselling authors and your favorite book talk creators to the latest pop culture moments, nothing is off the table.
Starting point is 00:15:51 It's like if you can hide some real messages inside compelling characters, then that is a Trojan horse. Whether you're looking for literary deep dives, smart pop culture conversations, or a community of readers who love to think a little too much, you're in the right place.
Starting point is 00:16:08 Listen to pro society on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. See you between the pages. Do you want to say it? What are your reasons for speaking up when you did? I was invited to the Jane Goodall premiere to see her documentary, which I love Jane Goodall. And I've had the privilege of meeting her a few times, which is like, right? You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:16:32 That's a good one. I was at her premiere and was doing the carpet and stuff like that. And at the time, there was another comedian who was being very outspoken about Louis and his behaviors and stuff like that. And that person is a friend of mine. And she was being very vocal about it or whatever. But I just, I for, you know, was doing what I had done for years, which is just ignore it. Just move on and just keep it moving. Like, keep it moving.
Starting point is 00:17:02 I did not have the experiences other people had. So for me, just wanted to keep it moving. Right. So I went to this premiere and a person that is of, you know, that is very close with him was really, really nasty to me. Like humiliatingly nasty. And I thought, so what was that all about? And why is that necessary? And it was in front of a bunch of people, a bunch of mutual people and stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:17:27 It was very blatant, very obvious, and really nasty. And I thought, well, I'm losing no matter what, whether I'm quiet or not, I'm losing. Like, I'm fucked. I'm clearly on the radar. I'm clearly on some sort of list. So I'm here just trying to see, you know, meet Jane Goodall and see her documentary, support her work, and I'm being treated like shit by a complete asshole. So I went home that night and like I cried. I'm not a big crier. It takes a lot to get me to do that. But I cried and was like, this is so fucked up. And like I'm just trying to like move on. I don't, I don't deserve that shit. I've not done anything. I've not said anything.
Starting point is 00:18:16 It wasn't my fault. Like, just like, fucking leave me alone kind of thing. And so I told my friend who was being very vocal about everything. And I was, and I said, I'll go on record and I'll use my name. And at that time, I was the only one. And she was like, you're going to use your name. And I said, yeah, because it doesn't matter. It doesn't fucking matter.
Starting point is 00:18:40 I'm losing anyway. Like, don't say anything. I'm a piece of shit. Say something. I'm a piece of shit. It doesn't matter. So at the time I spoke to the New York Times and they were like, okay, you're the only one. I was like, that's fine.
Starting point is 00:18:55 And they'd, I don't know what I'm allowed to say or not allowed to say, but I was the only one. And then as some time went on, then there was four other women. And that's it. I told my bit, told the truth, told the story. Courtney and David corroborated and others. And I stand by it, like I said. I don't regret it. But it doesn't go away.
Starting point is 00:19:23 And, you know, it's the consequences of that. And it just when you and I going back to our post on communicating on Instagram, it's like, it's just hearing a false narrative repeatedly for almost a decade. It's just fucking infuriating. And so when you were like, well, you know, how can I support you? literally, ultimately, there was no support. Zero support from the comedy community. Zero support from women. I lost friends because of it. I, you know, people distance themselves. They're like, I don't want to be around you. You called out one of the most powerful people in comedy or, you know,
Starting point is 00:20:02 you're done. You know, you're out. You're done. Oh, I'm so sorry. And I'm going to say something that might shock you. But the most support I got when any support came was from men. It was, you know, John Mullaney. It was Pete Lee. It was Judah Friedlander. It was Mark Marin. Pat and Oswald.
Starting point is 00:20:26 People reached out and were cool guys. Women not so much. It was very much. There was fake women who were like Ra Rha Ross, Hiskumbal. me put on my pink pussy hat and stand with you in the moment, but it wasn't, it wasn't real. It wasn't real at all. And the next moment they got to be in the boys club, they went right to it. They kissed the ring and do whatever.
Starting point is 00:20:51 They can't just. And here's the thing, too, I understand that it put everyone in a really bad situation. I understand that. So I kind of have grace for some people, but you asked me, you know, when I sat down, what is it that bothers you the most. It is the false narrative that I, you know, that we're all, all of the women who win on record, we all have separate different stories. We are all different individual human beings. I don't know the other two women. I very much know Dana and Julia. They're very special to me. They're good friends to me. I don't know the other women.
Starting point is 00:21:27 But, you know, we, we had our experiences. We handled it in the way that we handled it. but we shouldn't be lumped into one group. Like boo-hoo, the little, you know, that's the part that enrages me. And it's just not anything I'm ever going to be able to get away from. Aside from that, everything's good. Everything's good. So that's how we got to answer your question. That's how we started talking.
Starting point is 00:21:55 And then Chelsea was like, pulled up her big girl pants and said, what do you want me to do to support you? And I go, have me on your podcast. And she said, great. My people will reach out to you. And I just thought, they will not. They will not. And they did.
Starting point is 00:22:11 And you did. Look at us. Like, look at us. We're going to get low back tats after this. Did you bring one over? No, I have. She can actually do tattoos. Are you serious?
Starting point is 00:22:20 I have one. She's a tattoo artist. Oh my God. You should see the one I have is bad. Could you cover it up? Seriously. Could you? Of course.
Starting point is 00:22:26 We'll talk about that later. Yeah. But no. So thank you. Chelsea. I'm proud of you. Like, well, I mean, I'm glad to hear this all, even though it's unpleasant.
Starting point is 00:22:36 I know. It's unpleasant, but I'm glad for you to be able to talk about it in this way and to create, you know, hopefully some distance from this and him and that narrative. Well, it's a bit concerning talking about it to you because this will go, you have a gazillion people who pay attention to what you say and do, and this will air. And it will start all over. And I had to shut my Twitter account down. I was getting death threats for two years, people showing up at my charity events, telling
Starting point is 00:23:09 me that they were going to rape me to death, like crazy shit. Yeah. So it's a double-edged sword. I can talk to you about it. I am talking to you about it. I'm giving you consent to talk about it that often. But it's what brought us together. So I feel like it's worth talking about.
Starting point is 00:23:24 But at the same time, I'm fully aware what this is going to do. It is not going to be cute. But everyone can fucking suck it. I don't care. I kind of feel that way about the world in general. You know, right now, I think a lot of women have come to this conclusion. Wait, that's the conclusion. The collusion that, who gives a fuck?
Starting point is 00:23:48 You know what I mean? I don't have time for everyone and everyone's the tenor, the way that men are allowed to talk and try. street women in this country has gotten to such a place that I really don't care about like pleasing them or making them happy. It's about making men aware. And we're not going to do it on this podcast. There's not tons of straight guys watching me, you know, either. I represent, you know, what a lot of those guys from the manosphere hate, which is an independent woman, woman who doesn't, isn't looking for a man or doesn't need a man. And they don't like that. But I think a lot of women, I know a lot of women
Starting point is 00:24:29 are just sick of it. We've all had it. It's just exhausting. And every time you meet a nice guy, you're like, oh my God, what a pleasure. And you're like, over. Yeah, it's like a good dad. You're like, oh my God, you're such a good dad because you're with your kid, you know? And you're like, oh my God, these guys, you're getting rewarded just for being not rapists or not disgusting. Yeah. Like one of the easiest things in the world to not do is jerk off At someone. At someone. At someone.
Starting point is 00:24:54 But it seems like it's one of the most, in a workplace. But it just seems like that's just such a task. And I guess if one good thing has come out of the past 10 years of that experience, this is good because I appreciate it. And I appreciate you taking the time to do it. And also, you know, taking the time to watch my documentary and having a little bit of an understanding about what I'm up against when it comes to the city and like trying to end this horrible crisis.
Starting point is 00:25:21 Right. Because you have a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles. I have a lawsuit against everybody. All of them. Yeah, all of them. And tell me what is the like goal purpose and goal of like if you could wave a magic wand to get your wish, what is the end result?
Starting point is 00:25:38 Okay, that's a great question. Thank you. Thank you, Catherine. My dream would be like I started my charity 16 years ago and I loved it because I was still doing stand-up when I was touring with my charity and got to do all of that still, but also, but doing it in a positive way, I was saving all these dogs and everything.
Starting point is 00:25:58 But in my brain, I was like, oh, this is not going to last long. I got this charity will be around for like a few years and then I'll have to shut it down because there's no need for it. And then I can go back to, you know, if I'm hireable, you know, going back to trying to have my career that I worked on, you know, that I wanted and had. And it just turns out there's no end in sight and not even in my lifetime will there be. But I'm a national. charity but based in Los Angeles, but my dream is that is that animals in Los Angeles will stop being killed in no-kill shelters. They call the shelters no-kill when they're killing dogs every single day. Best Friends Animal Society calls it no-kill L.A. It's their thing. And I don't agree with it because how can you call something no-kill when killing is happening every day? These are adoptable, lovable dogs. It's just bat-shed. And so I'm firmly against that. And I'm also firmly against animals being, I'm sorry, this is a real
Starting point is 00:26:57 nose dive into the dark, but just go, we'll go with their, I'll get us back out. I'll take us out. When dogs are being starved, infected, crammed in wire crates that are given to them by L.A. City shelters and called support. It's insane. And it's all happening in plain sight. Like none of it is secret. This is all real life. Like no one's making it up. It's not a theory. This is real life. So when I first found out about this about three years ago. I'd lived here for a very long time, and I'm ashamed to say I didn't really know what was going on on Skid Row and all over the city. I didn't know. And a lot of times it's easy to not know. So when I found out about it, it was sort of the angel thing
Starting point is 00:27:35 where I was like, holy shit, this is insanity. And I'm a national organization, so I know what's going on around the country. But I was like, holy crap, this is like the fourth largest economy, one of the largest cities in the world. This is a place of privilege and power. And animals are enduring things that you cannot, you cannot fathom. You cannot fathom. And so I thought, nope, that's going to be wrapped up. We're going to wrap that up. So I started offering services and resources and funding to spay and neuter-piple-type dogs on Skid Row and brought people in from Bloodsport and all it, because they're fighting dogs and stuff from HSUS, that they're now Humane World for Animals. And they had offered to do a sweep of the streets and pull the dogs who are being abused because not all, just so everyone
Starting point is 00:28:25 knows, not all unhoused people abuse animals. There's many unhoused people who love their animals and give them what they need. Just like not all people with houses abuse animals, but also people with houses abuse animals. So let's just clear that up so that the comments are, you're going after home. We're not going after unhoused people. We are going after animal abusers. and they're doing it in plain sight, there's no excuse for it. So when I found that out, I just thought, no, no, I cannot live in this city. I cannot do what I do. I cannot have the mission my charity has and know that that's happening seven miles from my apartment.
Starting point is 00:29:03 It's not happening. So I started doing, I wasn't just crying and yelling and posting and I was offering solutions, bringing in outside resources. And they were all just like, suck it sideways, lady. We don't want to hear what you have to say and we're not doing anything. And that has been consistent from Karen Bass to city council, Nithia, to all of L.A. Animal Services, to Stacey Dane's, Brenda Barnett, all of the GMs, all of it. They have just literally been like, no, we don't care what you have to say.
Starting point is 00:29:38 And we're not solving it and we're not taking care of it. So after I exhausted everything for three years, I've been on every news show, done every interview. done everything I could possibly do to try to help end this, I decided that I would sue them all. And so I am. And it's a historical unprecedented lawsuit. And I have a really good legal team, Mark Garagos, and his firm are our attorneys.
Starting point is 00:30:05 And we're fighting. We're still fighting. And so the goal is to get it through to court. So then we can get depositions and we can interview them. And they have to be held accountable for what they're allowing to have. And the dogs in the shelters are enduring excruciating circumstances. Some dogs are not even getting out of their kennels for six months. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:30:25 So I want, this is all fixable stuff. I do believe that it can be fixed. The new Red Bull Dragonberry and Tropic Berry Energizers now at McDonald's, made with freeze-dried fruit and an electric burst of flavor. The all-new Red Bull Energizers, now at McDonald's. This product may not be right. for you. High in caffeine, details of McDonald's.ca. At participating Canadian restaurants, excluding Quebec.
Starting point is 00:30:53 When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and held captive for nine months. I survived, and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them. I'm Elizabeth Smart, and these are the Survivor Files. I just remember this low, taunting voice next to my ear saying, shut up, don't say anything. Every week, I'm with Survivor Files. who lived through the unthinkable. I knew if he woke up, without a doubt, he was going to hurt me. I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed, and I just started screaming.
Starting point is 00:31:34 They are abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced. But these aren't stories about what's taken from them. There's stories about what it takes to make it out alive. Listen to the Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart on the iHeart Radio, app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the new podcast, Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I chose option B.
Starting point is 00:32:06 I'm Julie Pinero, and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word Solita, trading the pity. for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people, and they were like, you smiled at us. Not a lot of people smile around here. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is, and not the lies you're sold about it.
Starting point is 00:32:34 It can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind, or wake up to a new version of yourself. So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the IHeart Radio app, Apple, podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. If your bookshelf and your for-you page are equally important to your personality, welcome home. This is Prose Society, the weekly podcast that's part book club, part group chat for
Starting point is 00:33:05 thought daughters, pop culture obsessives, and anyone who thinks pride and prejudice and Love Island deserve the same level of discourse. I'm Eli Rallo and every week we're connecting the dots between books, the internet, and the conversations everyone can't stop having. I'm going to have to look up this story. I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed. From bestselling authors and your favorite book talk creators
Starting point is 00:33:25 to the latest pop culture moments, nothing is off the table. It's like if you can hide some real messages inside compelling characters, then that is a Trojan horse. Whether you're looking for literary deep dives, smart pop culture conversations, or a community of readers who love to think a little too much,
Starting point is 00:33:44 you're in the right place. Listen to pro society on the Iheart radio app Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. See you between the pages. Is there a place or a city that you know of where their system is a good beta test for ours or like a blueprint? That's a great question, but not in America, other countries. Yeah, there's always going to be psychos who abuse animals and do shitty things. But for the most part, they have great responses and great outcomes and they control their population.
Starting point is 00:34:16 and they, you know, it's a very, a lot of other countries have things great under control. And I know we can do the same thing. In America, not so much right now. We're in a total state of emergency. Like, honestly, and especially L.A., we are in a severe crisis. Let's tell people how they can help, what they can do. And we've got tons of animal lovers that listen to this show. So what can people do to contribute?
Starting point is 00:34:42 Where can people see your documentary? And, yeah, people want to help. dogs. Let's figure out what we can do. Okay. And also put a link to your documentary in the description for this episode too. I have a documentary short and the feature link. Those are both available at standup for pits.us or, and there's a link there to go to kinema.com. It's where you can rent it. For now, that's where it's available. And then how people can help is if you are able to foster a dog, just open your home, you know, become a foster for a reputable rescue. Um, and and open your home to try to adopt.
Starting point is 00:35:20 If you want to help the situation, the crisis, volunteers are always needed, shelter volunteers, and they're always desperately hurting, especially Lancaster, Palmdale, not so much Palmdale, Lancaster, that's a county shelter, not a city shelter, but all the shelters, city and county shelters desperately need volunteers. Donate if you can, but people don't,
Starting point is 00:35:39 a lot of people don't have money, that's okay. You can still help and be effective and make an impact without having to donate. I always, you know, I'm better at asking for money as a charity, but I always am, I think what's more powerful is empowering people to do something. If I, as a dipshit comedian who's never had anything to do with animal welfare can accomplish what my charity has been able to accomplish, anyone can do it. You just have to want to do it. So find what pulls at your heart, whether it's volunteering, fostering, donating, dropping off supplies to shelters. Going down to Skid Row to feed the dogs and give the dogs water when it's hot, bring people, it's dangerous, be careful.
Starting point is 00:36:23 Whatever you can do to help, even just one act to help one dog matters. So that's what I would say. There's no real form. There's no real answer. It's just find out what is important to you, what you want to see change and try to be a part of that change in whatever way you can. It's really that simple. Well, I like that you're channeling your anger and rage in this way. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:36:48 This is important what you're doing. Thank you. Yeah, it's a lot of rage. I have an enormous amount of rage. There's a lot of rage to be had. I understand. Yeah, but thank you. There's nothing more powerful than a pissed off woman.
Starting point is 00:37:01 We get a lot done. Yeah, and my dream, just to answer your question fully, is that it just stops. I want to shut my charity down. I don't like this. I honestly would love to work at Trader Joe's and live in upstate New York. That's my dream. That's where I'm at. I'm probably going to die at 60.
Starting point is 00:37:22 I'm really hopeful. There's no wood. I'm hoping that I do. There's wood right behind you. I have small arms, Chelsea. I can't reach shit. Yeah. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:37:30 We couldn't even knock on the wood. No, it's fine. It's fine. I wouldn't mind doing a group euthanasia. Do you, does that sound like something you might be interested in? Of course. I mean, they euthanized dogs. Why can't they euthanize us?
Starting point is 00:37:44 I mean, that's kind of a conflict, actually, because we're talking about not euthanizing dogs. No, I'll support that. But we can, because I'm kind of, I feel like I want to wrap things up soon. You want to wrap it up. Okay, well, when you're ready, let me know, and I'll go wherever you go. I might be wrapping it up. Whatever you want to happen, I see it happening for you. You do?
Starting point is 00:38:06 Yes, because you are fueled by anger and rage, and you're going to accomplish something with this. even more than you already have, like whether it's this lawsuit or, you know, however that happens, I do see, you can't put this much effort into something and not see a result. You just can't. It will happen. It just doesn't happen whenever you want it to happen. Yeah, I really hope you're right. And I think we should get you back on stage two as doing sets.
Starting point is 00:38:33 Don't you think it would lighten the load a little bit once a week? No, I love doing stand-up so much. feel like I have about nine specials in me. I have an enormous amount of things to say and talk about and but also I feel like, you know, no one cares. But who cares, who cares? I just think it might give you a little slice of sunshine. It would. You know? I mean, it would. It would. It's definitely something that I miss and I love doing it. But I did two sets last night. I did the improv and then I did the comedy store. And? And I just feels good. Did you love it? I did. I did. I I feel it's not easy for me when I'm here in L.A. to like want to go out at night because I like
Starting point is 00:39:17 use L.A. as like a recovery place. Yeah. And look at your home and that dog would you ever. I know. The dog is hard to leave. Really hard to leave. Yeah. But anyway, I did go and it just is a mood lifter to go out and make people laugh. So any, yeah, we're going to let's, we'll focus on getting you some spots around town. Whenever you want to do it, we'll keep in touch. And then, yeah, we'll figure it out. Get a set together. Okay. Then it'd be a good opportunity to you to talk about everything. You saw all the things. Yes. Yes. Exactly. And people can go to standup for pits.us. Correct. All right. And it's Pits with one T. I kept making that mistake.
Starting point is 00:39:53 It is. Yeah. And you saw a bunch of cute t-shirts, too. People can support you by buying this with all of her different dogs on the T-shirts. How many dogs do you have now? Currently, I have three. I have Todd, Glendon, Pippin. Okay. I like the names also. They're a real deal. Yeah. Well, you met Doug. And Doug. has a sister coming, Denise. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:14 She's in my orca right now. How come he didn't come in for the show? I don't know. Where is he? Sometimes he's busy. He might have had an appointment today. I figured. He has a, well, he says his own full schedule.
Starting point is 00:40:24 Sure. He seemed kind of busy. He has a friend next door. Sometimes he goes through the thing and sees her. Oh, okay. Well, Rebecca, I'm so glad you came. I'm so glad we reconnected. Me too.
Starting point is 00:40:35 And we'll see more of each other. All right, Chelsea. Thank you so much for doing this. Yeah. You're a sweetheart. Yeah, no problem. My pleasure. You deserve it. Okay. If you want advice from Chelsea, write in to Dear Chelsea Podcast at gmail.com.
