Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome back to Daily Wisdom. There are moments when life is here right in front of us, and yet we are not quite here with it, moments where the mind continues to run ahead, as if peace were always waiting in a place we have not yet reached. This week, we are taking our time to scan beneath the surface of our inner movements. We began yesterday with the surface. strange feeling of not being fulfilled, even after reaching things we once hoped for.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Today, I would like to stay close to another kind of distance, the distance between the life we are living and our ability to truly inhabit it. This distance can be very subtle. It does not always look like a crisis. It may look like an ordinary morning. The phone already in our hands. The phone already in our before we have fully arrived in the day. A few messages, a few headlines, a quick glance at what others are doing, and before anything has really begun, the mind is already elsewhere.
Starting point is 00:01:18 It is comparing, anticipating, answering, measuring, remembering. The body is in the room, but the attention has scattered. Then the day moves forward. We do what needs to be done. We answer. We prepare. We work. We cross streets, open doors, read messages, make decisions.
Starting point is 00:01:43 And often from the outside, everything seems normal. Nothing dramatic is happening. But inside, there can be a quiet sense of being divided. A part of us is doing the day, while another part is watching from a distance, already tired of what has. not yet happened. I think many of us know this feeling. We may reach for the phone, not because we truly want it, but because silence feels to exposed. We may fill every gap, not because every gap
Starting point is 00:02:17 needs to be filled, but because stillness begins to reveal what speed was covering. We may keep the mind occupied because, in some strange way, being busy feels safer, than being here. And this is why I do not think the present moment should be spoken of too lightly. Sometimes people say, just be present,
Starting point is 00:02:44 as if presents were an easy return to a peaceful place. But the present moment is not always peaceful. Sometimes it is simply honest. It shows us the tiredness we have been postponing, the sadness we have been keeping at the edge of awareness, the dissatisfaction we have tried to outrun, the tenderness we have not known how to give ourselves. To be present is not only to notice the beauty of the world, it is also to
Starting point is 00:03:18 stop running away from the truth of our own inner weather. That is why presence should not become another pressure. I do not believe it should be another standard. another performance, another way to tell ourselves that we are failing because our mind wanders. The mind wanders for reasons. It runs ahead because it is trying to prepare. It goes back because it is trying to understand. It escapes into distraction because something in the moment feels too raw, too uncertain, too unfinished. So perhaps the question is not. why can't I stay present? But rather, what makes it so difficult for me to stay close to my own life? This changes the tone completely, because instead of blaming ourselves for being distracted,
Starting point is 00:04:18 we begin to see the movement with more compassion. Maybe the mind is not an enemy of the present. Maybe it is a tired guardian, always scanning the distance, always trying to prevent pain before it arrives. Tick Nhat Han often returned to very simple images, a breath, a step, a cup of tea, a flower. I think part of his wisdom was to make the present moment small enough to be entered. He did not present presence as a grand spiritual achievement. He brought it back to the ordinary gesture, breathing in, knowing that we are breathing in, walking knowing that we are walking, holding a cup, and for a brief moment actually holding it.
Starting point is 00:05:09 There is something deeply merciful in that, because the present moment is not asking us to fix the whole day. It is not asking us to become perfectly calm. It is not asking us to erase the past or stop caring about the future. It is only asking for one point of a contact. One breath we actually feel, one sound we actually hear, one face we actually see before the mind turns it into a thought. This may seem small, almost too small, but modern life often takes us away from ourselves through very small exits too. A notification, a comparison, a worry, a memory, a small dissatisfaction, a task left unfinished, A thought that says later when everything is clearer, then you can rest.
Starting point is 00:06:07 So perhaps we return in the same way, through small entrances, the warmth of water on the hands, the weight of the body in a chair, the first taste of food before the mind moves to the next thing, the feeling of air entering the chest, the quiet recognition that for this one second, We do not need to be anywhere else in order to be alive. The Tao Te Ching often points towards simplicity, toward the uncarved block, toward what has not yet been complicated by too much grasping and naming.
Starting point is 00:06:48 I find that image useful here. The present moment is often simple before the mind carves it into a problem. A morning is only a morning before it becomes proof that we are late. A silence is only a silence before it becomes loneliness. A pause is only a pause before it becomes guilt. A feeling is only a feeling before it becomes a whole story about who we are. Presence then may be the art of touching the moment before we cover it too quickly with meaning. Not because meaning is wrong. We need meaning. We need meaning.
Starting point is 00:07:30 We need memory, we need imagination. But when the mind adds too much too quickly, the raw life of the moment disappears beneath the commentary. That is how a cup of tea becomes a thought about productivity. A walk becomes a space for worry. A conversation becomes an inner rehearsal of what we should say next. A day becomes only a bridge toward another day. and slowly, without noticing, we begin to live beside our life, rather than inside it.
Starting point is 00:08:08 This is the distance I would like us to notice today with tenderness, because beneath this distance, there is often a longing. We do want to be here. We do want to feel our life more fully. We do want to stop arriving at the end of the day with a strange impression that we're We were present for all of it, and yet touched by almost none of it. Maybe this is why the present moment matters so much, not because it's always beautiful,
Starting point is 00:08:41 but because it is the only place where life can actually reach us. Love can only reach us here. Rest can only soften us here. Beauty can only surprise us here. Even change can only begin here. We may dream of a different future, and sometimes that dream is necessary. But the first honest choice still happens now. We may regret the past, and sometimes regret carries a lesson.
Starting point is 00:09:15 But the next gesture of repair still happens now. We may search for peace far ahead of us, but the body learns peace through one present breath, one softened hand, one unclench moment. The present moment does not ask you to give up your dreams. It does not ask you to forget your responsibilities. It does not ask you to stop becoming. It only asks you not to abandon the life that is already touching you
Starting point is 00:09:48 while you wait for another one. The day may not become easier immediately. The mind may not become silent. The future may not become. clear, but a small intimacy with life returns. We stop treating the present as a waiting room. We stop postponing our own existence. That may be today's wisdom. The present moment is not somewhere else. It is not hidden in a perfect morning, a quieter mind, a better version of yourself, or a future where everything has finally settled. It is here, beneath the noise,
Starting point is 00:10:33 beneath the planning, beneath the tiredness, beneath the endless movement toward what comes next.
