Welcome back to daily wisdom.
This is the last of our five days together.
Before anything else, take a slow breath and land where you actually are.
So much of life is lived somewhere other than where it is happening.
You are with your child, and half your mind is.
on the phone in your pocket. You are eating a meal, already planning the next thing. You're on a walk
you will barely remember because you spent it rehearsing a conversation that may never take place.
The life in front of you unfolds in real time once, and a great deal of the time we are not there
for it, off in the future or the past or the endless commentary running in the head.
Everything this week has been clearing the way to a single thing, the plain life directly in front of you,
and whether you can come back and actually live it.
We turned the noise down so we could hear our own life again,
loosen the grip of wanting more so that the life we already have could be enough.
Let the ordinary begin to feed us and left a little space unfilled.
all of it was subtraction in the service of one return
back from everywhere we wander in our heads
to the single place life is happening
which is here
it helps to be honest about why we are so rarely here
the present can seem too plain, too small
not quite enough
and so we lean perpetually toward a better moment that is coming
or back toward one that has gone.
The mind treats right now as a corridor to somewhere more important,
hurried through on the way to the real thing.
And we miss the plain fact that the corridor is the life,
that there is no arrival further on
made of anything but more moments like this one.
There is a line in the Tao Te Ching that says,
you need not go out the door to know the world, that what matters is not far off in some other
place or time. The way in this understanding is not hidden at the end of a journey. It is here in the
ordinary present, and the restless seeking that runs off to find it elsewhere is precisely
what keeps stepping over it. To arrive in the end is simply to stop leaving. Other traditions
circle the same truth. A Christian writer once spoke of the present moment as a kind of sacrament,
wholly not because any given moment is remarkable, but because it is the only place where life
actually reaches us, the single point at which we are ever truly given anything. The past is memory
now and the future is imagination. The only life you will ever get to live, arise.
one present moment at a time, and mostly while we are looking somewhere else.
When you do come back, the life you find waiting is more than you expected from so plain a thing.
This ordinary afternoon, this face across the table, this task in your hands,
holds of fullness you kept missing while you waited for something better to begin.
You are not wrong that something was missing.
You were only wrong about where.
What was missing was not a grander life,
but you, present in the one you have.
This does not hold still, of course,
and within a minute of hearing it,
you will drift off again,
into the phone,
the plan, the worry, the replay.
Coming back to the life in front of you
is not a single achievement,
but a small returning.
You will make a thousand times
day, each time you notice you have left. The whole of it lives in the returning, in the turn of
attention from wherever it went back to what is actually here, and then a moment later, doing it again.
The simple life this week has been pointing toward was never a place you had to reach or a state
you had to earn. It was here the entire time in the life directly in front of you.
waiting under all the noise and the wanting and the leaving for you to stop looking past it.
You do not need a different life to begin.
You only need to arrive at last in this one.
