I've got so much I want to say to you but I'll keep it short.
The thing that made me message this morning was just I was listening to scraping the barrel six and under no circumstances
is Mark to think that he should be cutting back to two scraping the barrels a year to a year
I don't think so scraping the barrels Nat nieces Auntie Linny Tony they are just my favourites. I love listening to them.
They flow so well.
They're so organic.
It's just so nice to listen to when you're doing, you know,
the housework, the school run, taking the baby for a walk,
all that sort of thing.
So don't even think about it, Mark.
What a lovely message.
Thanks, Amy.
You've had quite a lot of those.
I haven't.
You always do this. No, you've had a lot. That too. It's been a bit of a week, isn't it, Amy. You've had quite a lot of those. I haven't. You always do this.
No, you've had a lot.
About two.
It's been a bit of a week, isn't it, really?
You all right?
Yeah.
You look a bit tired.
I'm a little bit tired.
Do I look tired?
I've got my new light on, my ring light.
It's meant to perk me up a bit, no?
I think it would benefit me if I was sat looking through the ring light.
Because from this angle, you're just sort of being lit from over there.
Maybe I should just have a hat or something with one over my face all the time.
Or what Joan Collins used to have.
Like a little stick that came out.
No, didn't Joan Collins used to have something?
Someone used to hold a pink light under her at all times.
I don't know about that.
Yeah, I'm sure well i might
be wrong i think you're thinking of a honey light which was a lamp that would be on the floor
lighting from below it wasn't pink oh just be white yeah they did have that i thought it had
a pink hue i don't know about that but they yeah, honey lights, they used to be called. And they were from below?
Yeah.
Because now we all go up, don't we?
No, camera up in the air.
Yeah.
Light from below.
Oh, I didn't know that.
Fills the shadows in.
Like that?
That's a bit Halloween-y.
I look like something from The Shining.
I know, but it's not under your chin.
What, like this?
Yeah, in amongst other lights. Oh, that doesn't work. It wasn't just for honey light, was it? not under your chin. What, like this? Yeah, in amongst other lights.
Oh, that doesn't work.
It wasn't just for honey light, was it?
That would look like Halloween.
It's like a torch.
Yes.
Halloween's soon, actually.
Oh, yeah.
What are you going as?
I hate Halloween.
Joni's got an aversion to it this year.
Have you done that?
No.
She is coming round to it.
She wants to get the decorations out tomorrow.
Does she?
Yeah.
Really?
Yes.
I haven't said a word.
Right, okay.
No, honestly, I'm really...
You haven't bribed her?
No.
Sure?
Yep.
Hmm.
I'm not a fan.
We've got two boxes of Halloween decorations in the garage.
Halloween trees.
Sorry.
You're laughing at.
Any normal person listening to this.
Have you got a Halloween tree?
Oh,
double seven,
double eight,
2019, 19.
Now, when I say tree, it's not like a Christmas tree where I hang decorations on it.
It sits on top of our kitchen island.
It's about this high.
What's that?
It works well, doesn't it, on a podcast?
I'm asking you.
What's that?
That's about a foot.
It's about a foot high. It's not a foot high. Yes, it is. No, it no, I'm asking you. What's that? That's about a foot. It's about a foot high.
It's not a foot high.
Yes, it is.
No, it's not.
It's huge.
It's tiny.
It's a little black one with the twigs on it.
It's bigger than a foot.
A foot and a half.
Karen describing it
for the listener
because at the moment...
It has black twigs on it.
I'll get it out tomorrow.
I'm going to have to do that now.
But what is it?
Is it a tree? Yes, because you can hang things on it and it's got a tree like bark
at the bottom it's not a tree though is it come on imagine you can hang baubles off of it okay
but now describe but describe what it is what is it it's a black thing with loads of twigs and the
twigs have lights on how big is the black thing what What is it? I don't know what you mean.
Because I actually don't know
if I know what you're talking about now.
Well, we've got two of them.
One I usually put in the corner of the kitchen.
Which makes an impact.
Do you put presents under it?
No.
It's Halloween, babe.
It's just a few,
the ball balls and everything.
How many people do you think
have got one of those?
You'd be surprised surprised I'm not saying
there's loads
but you'd be surprised
because they're in the
shops each year
darling
it's just a little
crafting thing
for the kids
I've got little
decorations that
they've made over the
years for Halloween
little ghoulies
do you know what
it's American
it's an American
oh it's just
everything about it is terrible.
What's wrong with Americans?
Nothing's wrong with Americans.
We have Americans listening to us, so you want to be careful.
Absolutely.
But we also, we don't do Thanksgiving, do we?
No.
No.
We leave it to them because it's their thing.
As was Halloween.
I know, but it's nice.
The kids go out.
Oh, Hallow's Eve.
Well, anyway, I don't know where I was going with this story.
What about the Easter tree?
Yeah.
What about it?
Do the phone number again.
Who's got an Easter tree?
Go on.
077.
Why can't you do the number?
It only could be me texted in going, yeah.
07788 2019 19.
And the third thing I've got to ask.
What?
Who has got a banana holder?
Because we have.
What's wrong with a banana holder?
We have got a hook on a stand.
Which is a banana holder.
Apparently.
It's a banana holder.
I bought that in John Lewis.
It's a banana holder.
It's not something you repurposed?
Nope.
Okay.
Bananas are known to ripen other fruits, as we found out today.
We'll go into that in a minute. But bananas ripen other fruits as we found out today we'll go into that in a minute but bananas ripen other fruits
therefore if they're hung up on their own they don't make all the other fruit ripen quickly
so you keep them separate yes you could put them in a separate bowl but it's nice to have the fruit
bowl and the banana holder next to it it looks nice but what happens you've got your bunch maybe
there's five. Yeah.
Then there's four.
Go on.
Then there's three.
Don't start counting again.
I'm not doing this.
What happens when there's one left?
That is an issue.
Design flaw.
Agreed.
Right. I just lay it on top of the banana holder, the base.
What do we think the odds are that somebody listening to this now
has got
a Halloween tree
an Easter tree
and a banana holder
you've got to have
those three items
no cheating
I don't want any
alright we need a picture then
we need a photo
to prove it
but they're not going to get
the Easter stuff out
are they at this time
no
it's needed actually
maybe a picture
they'll have a picture.
They'll have a picture of it, won't they?
If you can provide those three things.
What are they going to get?
I'm going to come up with something.
I'll send you something.
I don't know how I feel about that.
Eh?
What are you going to send them?
I don't know.
Get you to sign something. Interestingly, a lovely friend of mine, Naomi, from the pod.
I'm going to show you this, actually.
Hang on.
She has popped online and designed a bag for life for us.
Now, that's good.
So this is a green bag with I'm not stealing bag for life brackets with Nat.
That's clever.
Good, isn't it?
It's very good.
Same colours like that on brand.
But maybe we could make something for them if they've got a banana holder, an Easter tree and a Halloween tree.
I think the odds are slim. I disagree disagree i think there's going to be a couple
okay i mean i'll be very pleased if i mean it would just be funny wouldn't it if someone did but
i doubt it somehow i'll be i'll be surprised if someone's got two of those items can we just have
a chat please about our week? Yeah, go for it.
It's been what a brilliant week.
Fantastic week.
For who?
For us.
That's it?
We have become great auntie and uncle again.
Oh, yeah.
I'm not going to go into it.
It's Elliot's story to tell the next time she's on here.
Keeps on nudging her.
When do you fancy? She just looks
at me. I mean, I am giving her a rest, the poor thing, but it's Elia's story to tell. Thank you
for all your messages of congratulations today for Elia. Her, Jack and baby James are doing super
well, but it's just been a lovely, there's nothing better than a new baby being born into the family.
Well, you've got a lot to say, haven't you?
I'm listening to you.
I'm just saying there's nothing better.
The joy a newborn brings, in my eyes, is amazing.
You think I've been over the top this week, be honest.
No, I don't.
Be honest.
Have I said that one?
You haven't said it.
No.
But have I spoken about it a lot?
A little bit.
Yeah, I mean,
obviously you have,
but it's big news.
It is big news.
Very pleased for them both.
Got lovely pictures,
didn't we?
We did, yeah.
Yeah.
But yeah,
that's been in the highlight
of the week
that's for sure
what else has happened
this week
not a lot really
I mean to be fair
nothing really can
top that can it
but um
no
it's been a busy week
quite exhausting week
for me
yeah me too
oh you've been
filming Christmas
I have yeah
at EastEnders
haven't you
yeah
yeah
big news that's all we can say but there you go been filming Christmas. I have, yeah. At EastEnders, haven't you? Yeah. Yeah. Big news.
That's all we can say,
but there you go.
What's the big news?
Well, it's just Christmas,
isn't it?
It's good.
Yeah.
It's always good.
It's not,
it's close,
isn't it, Christmas?
Not far away now,
sweetheart.
It's surprisingly close.
I know.
Which is odd.
Well, firstly,
we've got your birthday.
Yeah.
Haven't we?
Yeah, that big celebration that we have every year.
Why do you say it like that?
You're a very, very understated man.
You don't want for anything and then you're disappointed.
I don't get it.
I am not disappointed.
You do get disappointed.
You talk all the time.
You talk about the year
where I gave you
some chicken that wasn't cooked.
Correct.
After I'd been at work.
But I wasn't feeling well.
No.
But you never let me live it down.
No.
Can you imagine
if it was the only other way?
What if I had a half cooked chicken Kiev
yeah
if I had made for you for your birthday
you'd go
you would not stop talking about it
please
that's true
and I didn't bring it up by the way
you did
quick to remember though
weren't you
scarred by that
hi Nat
it's Laura here
I've not even finished this ep and I feel I need to unpack some stuff.
Firstly, Mark, how do you not know how old you are? I think it's just because he's avoiding
becoming 40. That's the only reason I can think of. You're not 95, so how do you not know a roll draw secondly my husband he would know who's
deep to solder it but he hasn't got a spare soldering iron hanging around in his shed
because i'd be too scared thirdly what was third thirdly the washing machine how have you got to
that age without knowing that if you undo the flap at the front, there is something that will unload the whole of the drums worth of water over the floor.
Good question, Laura.
You're lucky that you've got a hose on it.
Mine hasn't, so mine literally would unload the whole machine
or does unload the whole machine over the floor.
Is it definitely the brushes or is it just that the filter is clogged?
Because next to the
little hose thing you have a little turny thing that comes out and um usually it's full of crap
basically kirby grips a really good one ring pulls and teenagers another really good one
hair bands socks you get the occasional sock that likes to loiter in there and if you was
not you particularly but if i was any kind of grown up,
I would do it frequently to avoid these things.
But yeah, love listening to you guys.
You two together are hilarious.
Love the scraping the barrel pods.
Keep going.
Good advice, Laura.
Regular, regular cleaning of the filter.
Unfortunately, it wasn't as simple as that.
It was the filter. Unfortunately, it wasn't as simple as that though. It was the brushes.
So the
washing machines
Long. A couple of things I need to do
about this message.
Go for it.
Firstly, don't deflect
on what Laura said. You do know
how old you are. He does know how old
he is. He pretends
to be a year or two younger
for comedic effect.
Can I be honest?
Yes.
I don't often have to think
of how old I am.
Don't often get asked.
And we did have a joke,
didn't we,
a few years back
where I was pretending
to have missed a year.
No.
Well, not missed a year.
No. It's been missed a year. No.
It's been a long week.
What do I mean?
That you were born in 86.
Yeah.
So I was 28, say,
and then like the next year
I said I was 28
or whatever it was.
Again, why are you 28?
I just made that up.
No, I know.
But the point I'm making is Just say 38, babe. The thing is, obviously, as you can 28? I just made that up. No, I know. But the point I'm making is... Just say 38, babe.
The thing is, obviously, as you can hear, I'm confused.
But she is right.
You're not 95.
It's not for comedic effect.
No, I know I'm not 95, but it's not for comedic effect.
I just don't...
I've confused myself.
Sort of double bluffed myself.
So I have to really think about it.
But you were born in 1985 and you're 39.
Yes.
This month.
Am I?
Yes.
Yes.
Yeah.
Yeah, but genuinely, can I just say, it's not put on.
I've actually confused myself.
So no wonder Joni gets confused because I'm confused.
It is for nothing else.
What was the next point that Laura said?
The washing machine.
I'm afraid,
Laura.
You are right.
I am a grown up.
Actually,
if you want to be technical,
in fact,
it was about the soldering.
Her husband could do the soldering.
Yes.
Very good.
So the soldering,
we had a lot of comments,
darling,
from number six, where you'd done loads of stuff that evening the
washing machine the soldering blah blah blah blah thank you for all your messages there were a lot
of people once again you were right there were a lot of people that do this stuff in the home
absolutely loads and loads of people fix stuff and i'm pleased to hear it there were also quite a lot of ladies
lots of females
who said
I don't know why
you keep going on about blokes
I live on my own
or me and my wife
we just stick YouTube on
and get on with it
too right
so what this has made me realise
is I'm a lazy bastard
you're not lazy
you're just not the most
practical.
I don't want to do it.
But it's funny
because actually
you are very good
at stuff like that.
You actually can,
you are.
Give me an example.
But you don't do it,
but you choose not to do it.
Give me an example.
Just when you've tried
to do stuff,
you actually are quite practical.
I really mean that sincerely as well.
I know, but it's really good, but what's the example?
I can't think of one.
No, I don't think there is one.
But you do.
I've been quite practical with this sort of stuff.
Very much so.
The technical side of the podcast room.
Yeah.
I bought my new machine, which I clipped all up.
These cameras and stuff, I mean, don't get me wrong,
it looks like Spaghetti Junction in here.
Yeah.
It needs a sorting out.
But it isn't too bad.
But also,
it's through necessity, isn't it?
So you've needed to do that.
That's true.
Same with your computer and Dropbox
and sending stuff to Emma.
Yeah, it's true.
Because you need to know how to do it,
you do it.
Yeah.
I have no interest in
doing things with appliances or but you could apply yourself
we wanted to we don't need to do no so it's fine it's like you really today i've cleaned all the
bathrooms run around and done sort of the hoovering and stuff whereas you don't do those things darling you don't
clean the bathrooms
no
but I do
you do a bit of
hoovering
you do a bit of
hoovering
but no
in general
you don't clean
what
what's funny
it's like you're
about to burst
that laugh in when you're talking about me.
No, I'm just saying.
No, I don't clean.
You don't clean stuff, really.
You don't get a duster out.
You wouldn't dust.
No, if only I had the time.
No, you choose not to.
No, because I've got other stuff to do.
No, but you choose the stuff you want to.
That's not a bad thing because it works really well because you're doing stuff that I don't want to do.
Okay. I think we should job swap one week. I would love to. Oh, that's a great idea. a bad thing because it works really well because you're doing stuff that I don't want to do okay
I think we should
job swap one week
I would love to
oh that's a great idea
I will do it
honestly
no not a week
in a full month
a month
I'm going to write you a list
of what he's doing
in the next month
and I will do
I will happily
be in the warm
do all the cleaning
I'll do the hoovering
lovely
okay that'd be really good we should do that that's. I'll do the hoovering. Lovely.
Okay.
That'd be really good.
We should do that.
That's a good idea.
Can we not do it yet?
Can we do it when it's a bit warmer?
Because I don't like being outside in the cold.
No.
No.
When you say things that need doing,
I can't put track down on your railway.
That's not a job.
I'll do a list.
There's a few things.
And you could do it on Instagram.
Brilliant.
You could do it like each week. So this week I've done these jobs. All right. Okay. Can we do it in the spring? No. We're you could do it on Instagram it's brilliant you could do it like each week so this week I've done these jobs
brilliant
okay
can we do it
in the spring
no
we're going to do it
no no
I haven't got time now
it's too close
to Christmas and stuff
I haven't got time
you can't do that
no
I can't
right you've bottled it now
no
it's just too cold
but it is a really good idea
and we should do it
I think we should do it
job swap
next week we've got a couple of weeks coming up we're both off brilliant It's just too cold. But it is a really good idea and we should do it. I think we should do it. Job swap. Next week.
We've got a couple of weeks coming up.
We're both off.
Brilliant.
That's what we're doing.
A little project.
What was the other thing that Laura said?
Oh, it's like a memory game now.
Oh, the washing machine.
Oh, the washing machine.
Yeah.
Well, we're going back to it.
Yeah.
I didn't know there was a...
I've seen the flap.
I know the flap's there.
I just have had no interest in opening it.
I mean, there is a filter in there usually.
It's quite a dull subject, isn't it?
I don't think it's dull. I think the message was really lovely. I think it's quite a dull subject isn't it I don't think it's dull I think the message
was really lovely
I think it's really
great to know
no Laura's message
was good
oh okay
that's just the fact
we're dwelling on
talking about
washing machines
well anyway
thank you Laura

Talking about ages of birthdays and things.
I did pop it on our Scraping the Barrel message group.
Oh, yeah.
But Eliza was obviously 14.
And when I looked at her candles,
I'm going to show you.
This is brilliant.
Why is this brilliant?
Okay.
Because you've like,
you're what?
I am blown away by this.
I'm blown away.
So I obviously bought a one and a four
and her candles in gold,
14.
But obviously then when I looked, I thought, I'm 41.
And I just think that's a mate.
What are you laughing at?
Well, you know, little things get you sometimes.
And I thought, I don't think that's ever, it's never going to happen again in our lifetime.
No, because she's only going to be 14 once but i'm only ever going to be 41
months i know but she could be for instance i could have a 24 year old next year which would
mean then i would be 42 i'm just saying how much does that happen how much well she's not going to
be 18 and you're not going to be 81 but that's why it's special correct but you don't think so
because every time i mention it you ever go at me it's nice it's special. Correct. But you don't think so, because every time I mention it, you ever go at me?
It's nice.
It's nice.
It's unusual.
But you are quite mesmerised by it.
Yeah, I like little bits like that.
It's been mentioned several times.
And when I was at work and that photo just popped up on my phone,
and I thought, what's this?
And it was just a photo of a set of candles.
I thought, wow, she really is was just a photo of a set of candles I thought wow she really is
impressed by this
it's just impressive
numbers
dates
things like that
they were amazing to me
well there you go
I'd forgotten
I'd forgotten about that
riveting stuff
I mean it's
does it top the washing machines
I don't know
you put something in our group
from Laura's
message
in adverted commas
and you put
unload over the floor.
And you say, I'm rude.
No, no, no, no.
Yeah?
There's no.
You did.
You bark up the wrong tree there.
Okay.
It just made me laugh that she said that it was funny and I was thinking about the
palaver we had when we were mucking about
and the water went all over the floor
okay
why did it have to be like that
because you're a terrible Muriel
hey
Muriel
oh it's from Muriel's Wedding you're a terrible Muriel
I think they're Australian
I can't do accents
is that a film
yes
never seen it
it's quite funny
I don't think I've seen it
should I have seen it
no
not really
I'd quite like to watch
some more films darling
we never ever watch
a film do we
no
no
really
it's the last thing
we watched
went to the cinema
didn't we
when we watched
something
we watched
oh
Wonka
yes
Timothee Chalamet
yeah it's good
Tom Davis
Olivia Colman
top dollar
we've seen
something after
that though
we haven't been
to the cinema
yeah we did oh that's annoying after that day we haven't been to the cinema yeah we did
oh that's annoying what was that we didn't babe we did no we saw mary poppins
was it mary poppins no we've been since we have i couldn't tell you what it was. It was obviously great, but Paddington? No?
No, Paddington 3's out soon.
8th of November.
Very excited about that.
Very excited about that.
Did you know that was written by
a BBC cameraman?
You've only told me,
I don't know, 75 times.
Okay.
Michael Bond.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay. But it is, it's brilliant. It's quite interesting. It is times. Okay. Michael Bond. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
But it is, it's brilliant.
It's quite interesting.
It is interesting.
I agree with you.
Because he created the whole world of Paddington
standing behind a camera.
What are you going to do?
Well, I don't know.
There lies a question.
I reckon you'd be really good at writing stories I think you'd be really good
I'd really like to do that you know
would you?
yeah I would like to
I've often thought that
have you?
yeah and I quite like the idea of writing something
definitely got a thing about wanting to write something
I've read a lot of writing something. Definitely got a thing about wanting to write something.
I've read a lot of books on writing comedy.
Haven't learned much from it, but yeah, it's something I'd like to do.
We've often said, haven't we, in the past about a sitcom, writing a sitcom.
Well, that's only because none are being made and I love working on sitcoms.
So we're sort of going to have to start writing them.
So I've got one to make.
What would we do it about?
Well, technically there's only seven possibilities,
but I don't know.
You have to think about the location and then the core characters and that's it really.
I always thought...
I know what you're going to say.
Go on then. You've said this to me before you've always thought that a good location would be
i can't remember now was it a garage petrol station um no what was it although actually
yeah alan partridge has kind of done it though.
When I worked at a shopping channel,
I always thought that would be quite a good situation, location,
just for very, very, loads of reasons.
Yeah.
It was quite, yeah, I just always thought it'd be a good one to do.
But there's a lot of potential in that environment. But again, that kind of behind the scenes TV thing has been done.
Done to death.
Done to death, really.
There's a show called Alma's Not Normal, which I'm very embarrassed to say I've not seen yet.
But it's BAFTA award winning.
And it's meant to be superb. And I's BAFTA award winning. All right.
And it's meant to be superb.
And I think we should start watching it.
Sitcom.
Right.
It's really well,
I mean,
everyone's raving about it,
but it's series two now.
So comedy drama type thing.
Yes.
Sorry.
Not sitcom.
Mark gets very upset when I call comedy sitcoms when they're not,
because they need to be in a studio.
No,
no. Live with an audience. Not live they're not because they need to be in a studio no one
no live with an audience not live sorry but it needs to be to be fair in a studio with an audience
doesn't it really yeah but that's a studio sitcom you can of course but comedy drama is more of a
sort of depends there are sitcoms that are sort of single camera yeah because that's just situation
comedy isn't it yeah
really it is what would you call motherland i'd say that was a comedy drama okay because it's
quite realistic in as much as yeah i mean it's realistic it's a real environment isn't it
they're actually out of school they're actually in their homes. Yeah. There is drama in it.
I'm really sad that that's not ever going to be made again.
Is it?
Why's that?
It just isn't.
Yeah, for sure.
From what I've heard.
Oh, that is a shame.
It was good.
Really good.
Really good.
I'd like to go back and watch it all again.
Christmas specials are good.
Do you remember that one with the school trip?
Apart from that dodgy
There was some really
Dodgy
Like
Person that came in
And played a teacher
In one episode
And she sort of
Wasn't great was it
But it was
Yeah
Generally speaking
Piss off
That was a good character that
It was good
I like the glasses
Thank you
It was good Yeah It was good It was really good that What was that good character that it was good i like the glasses thank you it's good yeah it was good
it was really good that what was that like doing that i loved it so much i was very starstruck
but not for long but you know i because i watch it yeah i watched it and i loved it so to be in it
was quite surreal surely that must have been really odd being in something you watch yes
that must be odd and really watch really enjoy yeah i know yes it was strange it's brilliant
though everyone was so lovely very good experience spent a lot of time on the motorway
well you were on a coach trip yeah
we were on a coach trip so it was it wasn't overly glamorous but it was fun no it was good
yeah it's good amazing immortalized forever in motherland i know it's pretty cool that
it's one of the better things i've done got any other comedy coming up that you've not told me about yet um
oh the documentary's full of it that's just me making a twat of myself it's a lot of comic moments especially being lowered into an ice bath
lowered what were you on i haven't really spoke to you about that, have I? No. Explain that to me. Lowered? Yes.
It was a chair, like a hoist.
So you're in a chair. Like a ducking
chair. What's a ducking
chair? You don't know what a
ducking chair is? No.
Oh dear. So you never did a school trip
to Canterbury when you
were... No. I'm from
Islington. How am I going to get to Canterbury
in a school day
we were lucky to walk up to St Peter's
Street Church, so if you look at the stained glass
windows
a ducking chair
was a woman's punishment
these were instruments of public humiliation
why women's?
well
well the one in Canterbury,
I'm just skimming this article I'm looking at.
I'm going to avoid some of the subject,
but I do know...
Why are you avoiding the subjects?
Because it gets a bit murky.
So they had this really good idea about it.
It's still there in Canterbury.
If you go to Canterbury and look at this little bridge
where you've got like a river and the chair's still there in canterbury if you go to canterbury and look at this little bridge where you got like there's like a river and the chair's still there and basically if you were
suspected of being a witch this is where the woman thing comes from oh the witch thing so if you were
suspected of being a witch and you got on the chair and they dunked you under the water and
when they pulled you out and you're still alive, you were a witch. And then you'd go and get burned at the stake.
Right.
If they put you on a chair, dunked you under the water, and you inadvertently drowned,
then that proved you weren't a witch.
Right.
But if you were a witch, they'd burn you to the stake anyway, wouldn't they?
Correct.
So you had no chance.
Not really, no.
I mean, the logic wasn't great, really? Correct. So you had no chance? Not really, no.
I mean,
the logic wasn't great,
really,
was it,
on the whole system? It wasn't the most,
sort of,
fair trial.
No.
But,
yeah,
that's a,
anyway,
sorry,
we've digressed,
so you weren't on one of those.
It wasn't a ducking chair,
so,
firstly,
we went to South Sea
in Portsmouth,
beautiful little beach, and met some sea swimmers
i've spoken about this on off the telly so i won't go on about it in case people listen to both
oh it don't matter does it no anyway met some sea swimmers the water the sea was about 14, 16 degrees.
That's quite warm.
I paddled, spoke to the sea swimmers.
It was sunny.
I said, I should really go in.
This is lovely.
And you know what I'm like.
I get excited.
There's a group of people really happy.
I thought I could actually go in here.
This would be good.
Anyway, the story was that I don't go in.
Anyway, get to the University of Portsmouth.
12 degree water.
I get strapped into just a chair, which water and slowly submerge me into the water.
Are you sure they didn't think you were some sort of witch?
Well, with my nose, who knows?
But the feeling, Mark, it was the weirdest thing that's ever happened to me.
Was it a bit wet?
It was so cold, but it starts at the bottom,
but you've got no control because you've got a belt on,
so you can't...
You know you jump in a pool?
Yeah.
Or you get your head wet, don't you?
I can't do that.
Well, I always say to you, if you get your head wet, it's better.
This, I had no control over the speed,
so your body...
And I couldn't breathe.
And at one point they said we were really worried
before something was going to happen to you
so that's going to make good telly why did i think that because everything stopped
i couldn't i couldn't breathe and then after about 20 seconds 25 25 seconds, I began to, my body began to regulate.
It's cold body shock syndrome thing.
I see.
But because we're looking at the science behind things, it's very, very interesting.
But I did look a bit of a pillock.
Well, don't spoil the outcome of this.
But it sounds very odd.
It's good fun.
But it's quite amusing.
Yeah. very odd it's good fun but it's quite amusing yeah it was quite nice actually on saturday
having had a long day at work after a long week yeah coming home to a film crew in my kitchen
that was that was interesting yeah that was you, oh, I'm done now with this whole filming malarkey.
Walking the house, lights up everywhere.
Lovely people, by the way.
Nice, a bunch of people.
Not met them before, had I?
No.
That was nice.
But you only think, oh, dear, I need to get away from this.
Nice, though.
Nice doing stuff at home.
Oh, yeah. Makes things realistic.
Yeah.
It's good good that was funny
didn't make me laugh
I got home and well
that's nearly all done
now so that's nice
another job jobbed
anything else exciting
coming up you haven't
told me about uh no
not really don't know
what's next really in
the pipeline I'm not
surprised didn't just
pop up on Strictly.
Well, I did that darling 14 years ago.
I know.
If they do a Strictly kind of, I don't know, Strictly.
Classic.
Classics.
Maybe I could do that.
I'd love to do it again.
I'm sad I did it when I did it.
Why is that?
Just because
I was a lot heavier
back then
and I just feel like
I could maybe dance
a bit better now.
I don't think that's got
any bearing on it.
I think you could dance.
It's a bit harsh on yourself.
No, I just think
I'm just a little bit
fitter
all round.
I don't think it matters at all what bit fitter all round. Hmm.
I don't think it matters at all what size you are to dance.
Of course it doesn't.
But when you're picking up the bloke.
Well, I mean, that was interesting, wasn't it?
That choice.
I don't think these days that would happen.
No, I don't think it would happen.
Well, actually, why not?
I don't mind.
I didn't mind it.
I didn't see it as a bad thing.
No.
But yeah, I would love to do that job again
Jamie's doing well aren't he
Very well
He smashed it didn't he
This week
It was good
Yeah
Sam brin all over the place
Very good
He had a slight
A slight resemblance
To Rodney Trotter
When he was on his roller skates
On holiday
He'd like that
Yeah
But don't you think
With the shirt and the shorts?
Oh, you mean in terms of a costume, not his dance?
Not the dance.
No.
I was going to say.
No, the costume reminded me a little bit of the Groovy Gang.
Mm.
Mm.
I wonder if he did that on purpose.
I don't know.
Because he is a number one fan of Only Fools and Horses, isn't he?
He is.
That's coming out, you know. It's coming back to the theaters you know i don't know where it is i think it's touring it does we need to go i
think south end's doing it a slightly different cast i think it is yeah i saw someone who was it that I saw on the one show yeah Vinnie Jones
isn't it
Vinnie Jones
is it Vinnie Jones
yes
I've been surprised myself
well done
my own knowledge
no it was
but I think that we should go
and I'd love to go and see it
and Joanie's desperate to see it
yeah she'd like it
but she knows every single song
from that soundtrack
I think it says 12 plus
but I think we could get her in
can't we
by the time she's got her
sheepskin
coat on and the flat cap
and her little briefcase,
no one's going to tell any different, are they? Red polo
neck. She's got a red polo neck. I mean, she has
got the outfit, hasn't she? She is, dear boy.
Yeah, she'll be fine. She'll be going with that. No one will question
her. I don't think so. No.
Bless her.
She could just look
like a very small
old man
but she
but maybe
I feel like
yeah possibly
if you were squinting
and it was dark
yeah
and you were a mile away
yeah
yeah
then that could be the case
yeah Yeah. Yeah. Then that could be the case. Yeah.
Dinner was nice tonight, wasn't it?
It was.
We treated ourselves.
We went out.
We didn't cook.
Exactly.
Went to the Miller and Carter, didn't we?
We did.
You like it, don't you?
I think it's really good, yeah.
I always have done.
I'm not overly keen. No, I know that. I think it's really good yeah I always have done I'm not overly keen
no I know that
I think it's okay
because you have not
stopped talking about
how you didn't like it
no I didn't say that
but it was convenient
it was convenient
it was quick
it's up the road
and the steak you get
for the money
I thought mine was lovely
yeah
mine was too big
couldn't eat it all
yeah
you finished mine off
didn't you
I did
yeah
but it was nice
it was nice to pop out
nice to not cook
where are you going with this
not going anywhere
you were going somewhere with it
I'm really not
honestly just saying it was nice it was nice to go out what are you going to do like phone the Not going anywhere. You were going somewhere with it. I'm really not, honestly.
Just saying, it was nice to go out.
What are you going to do, like phone the, I don't know, the CEO now of Miller & Carter?
You've got him on the line waiting to talk.
I haven't at all.
Which is really odd.
Why are you like...
Because I'm just going through the day.
I'm just saying that we had a meal out with the kids.
Yeah, it was great.
It was really nice not to eat at home and have to cook and wash up.
Yeah, it is good.
And we got home and... We're ready wash up. Yeah, it is good.
We're ready to watch Strictly, weren't we?
Really nice. Nice treat.
Especially as I've had meal breaks all over the place in the last week.
Yeah, you've not eaten properly, have you?
Not eaten properly, no.
And if you're not at home, I never eat properly.
No.
You need to sort that out.
It's not good.
No, no. it's very bad
mark the drinking thing you've just reminded me you've got to stop drinking on the pod
okay listen to this first time i've done that listen to this
hi there sorry i was just having a quick drink coming out of the gym um
oh guys you two make me chuckle love scraping the barrel um
I like all of your podcasts now I think you're doing a great job it's the only one I listen to
when I'm in the gym now I have to say when you do scraping the barrel number six is just the one
I've been listening to chuckling away um I love the dry humor I love your little sly digs about
my comment about the um drinking oh you've got to agree though does it not sound annoying look no or is it just me i think it might be me anyway um keep up the good work um you have
such a great relationship you guys um i love the dribble sounds awful when i say that but no it's
great fun to listen to um don't change anything um it makes me happy and i love seeing that little
red dot appear
when there's a new one
to listen to
anyway take care
bye
is that the same lady
who lodged a complaint
a couple of months ago
about my drinking
correct
on this
right
I hope it's been noted
that I don't do it
very often
you do it enough
to annoy people
that's a shame
anyone else comment on it
or
no
just one person but it is annoying though isn't it when she did it people. That's a shame. Anyone else comment on it? No.
Just one person. But it is annoying though, isn't it? When she did it.
Didn't really
notice it.
What do you mean when she did it?
Did she drink then?
She did, yeah. I didn't hear it.
No, I wasn't listening.
Funny that.
Have you got anything else you'd like to say today?
No.
Not really.
I'll tell you what, though.
Quite a few people who listen to this have actually spoken to me and said about the whole imposter syndrome thing,
which is something I'd never heard of.
Saying, oh, you know, don't be worried about it.
You shouldn't be.
So no, I'm not like, I'm not really worried about it.
It's not like something I'm losing sleep over.
I just made the comment.
I'm surprised anyone would want to listen to me and you talking.
But it wasn't like, you know, I don't know.
Didn't you send me some voice notes saying that?
Yeah, I know I did, yeah.
Yeah.
I'm going to save it if you don't mind.
Yeah, we're going to wait for a good opportunity.
I was going to end with one because it was so nice.
Oh.
Yeah, I had it all teed up.
Oh, right.
There you go.
Hi now.
I'm just Roger here from chessington and just wanted to say
um just listen to your episode of jumping barrel six with mark and the imposter syndrome he really
does have it but he doesn't need to it's amazing um it's actually one of the ones i look forward to actually hearing their day-to-day
life makes it seem so more real if that makes sense but yeah i just want to say i'm doing
amazingly and um thank you very much for your for your pod it's it's this morning help me do my walk
um and do my 10 000 sets before I even go back
have a show
and go to work
thank you so much Roger
isn't that lovely
Roger's my
my little fan
isn't he
I thought you were
going to say
God
what did you think
I was going to say
I thought you were going to say
Roger was my dad's name
and you went
Roger's my little fan
no I remember
Roger's message about my no I remember Roger's message
about my voice
yes
yeah
that's quite nice
I think he's
your number one fan
I'm sure
after me
I'm sure
that's not the case
nice message though
but
as I say
I never heard of the phrase imposter syndrome until you brought it up
you want to get yourself on instagram get on my reels no i'm all right thank you
it's all that comes up what do you mean do you have imposter syndrome
no yeah see this is the thing it's interesting you've said that, because I did think, where's that come from?
I've never heard that phrase before.
Do you want me to get you a drink?
Sorry, you just looked at the glass then, as if not expectantly.
No, no, no, it's fine.
We're nearly finished, so we'll go and have a nice drink now.
We could go and sit downstairs and have a gin and tonic together.
Okay.
You just mean you just looked at the glass, twisted it.
I know, no, I really, I just.
Plonked it back down on the side.
I was just, I was interested.
Disgusted.
Well, I gave it to you to have a sip out of and you seem to have.
Oh, hang on.
Done the whole thing.
I think you might have given a sip.
Hang on a minute.
You set me up.
Did you set me up?
All right.
There we go.
It's all coming out now. I was set up to make a slurp
excellent talking of babies yes adam oh right yeah ruby little ruby ruby nora another little ruby ruby's a naughty but they're very very cute and they've
got a lot of personality but congratulations to adam and georgina for baby ruby yes
absolutely gorgeous can't wait to give her a squeeze i'd like to pardon yes Ruby not Georgie
I'll give them all a squeeze
they're all so small
I can fit them all in my arms
I can see Adam's eye roll
like that though
I know
like the eyebrows
sorry Bedford
but that's the way it is
I'd also like to congratulate
talking of babies
wonderful Becky
hairdresser
oh yeah
and I've done that
I think I did that
in the pub with Maria
the other day but I'm doing it again just because I did that in the pub with Maria the other day,
but I'm doing it again just because I feel rude
because you're actually sort of announcing baby births.
So I thought I'd do it again.
Maybe you could do a slot.
Also, my hair is now desperate.
I'm desperate.
Really?
So bring the baby round.
I'll hold Mila.
You can do my hair.
Come to my barbers
pardon
go to the barbers
up the road
what am I going to do
in the barbers
have a haircut
they're going to cut my hair
why would they not
cut your hair
because they're not
hairdressers
they're barbers babe
what's the
well I know traditionally
what's the difference
are you about to say
oh
oh my god
same kind of thing
isn't it
do you know who i can think
of at this point and i know that i'm right your sister right your jenny will be screaming at you
regarding that comment you mind my words i'm telling you jen please am i right you'll be going
oh my god what is my brother talking about barbers and hairdressers?
I can hear her saying it.
It's just you said you were desperate, you know, desperate time.
No, I'm desperate because my hairdressers had a baby.
I'm not desperate enough to go and get a short back and sides.
Do you know what I mean?
Sorry, I meant to laugh at that.
You were quite proud of that. I do get quite proud when I think of laugh at that. You were quite proud of that.
I do get quite proud
when I think of a little joke.
I think Emma should put
a bit of canned laughter on that.
Continue that sitcom theme.
Not that I have canned laughter
in the UK, but...
Oh, for crying out loud.
He's going to edit it now, Emma.
He has to put all the stuff in it now
he's telling you what to do
I'm not
he's getting very big for his boots
and this is the trouble you see
I come on because you said to me
I'm desperate to do a podcast
I've got no one else to do one with me
which is true
and then I come on
and I try not to get in the way
Auntie Lily was going to pop round but she's been so manic
she's become a nonna again
nonna for everyone who doesn't know
is Italian for nanny
so obviously she's super busy
at the moment with all the grandchildren
and the new addition
so it's all wonderful
but she might slip round tomorrow for an hour
before heading round to Ellesbeth
so we can do a little one
for the following week which would be nice
I hope everyone's still
really enjoying the pod, we love it
we love doing it don't we darling
it's always nice to have a chat with you
that's all I'd say
surprised anyone wants to listen to it
oh my Christ
as Pam would say
cue Roger to it. Oh my Christ. As Pam would say. Cue Roger
sending a message next week.
Who's Roger?
Oh. Oh dear.
Sorry.
All the messages mean the world to Natalie.
Keep them coming.
She really
appreciates it.
I do appreciate all the messages.
Any others?
I don't know.
I think we've played them all.
I think there should be some other messages.
Surely.
Yeah, we've got one more message and then we're going to have to go.
So let's have a listen to this.
Hi Nat, it's Mary here from Scotland.
I'm just catching up with Scraping the Barrel number six
and I just had to message you because it's towards the end of the episode
and you're telling Mark not to have imposter syndrome.
And I just knew before you said it, you were going to say, I love you.
And I feel like we know your relationship with Mark now and it's so endearing.
And I just think you're both so cute.
And like the whole time Mark's thinking, you know, we shouldn't have recorded this episode, but we just love it, Mark.
We love it. We love just hearing you guys chatting it just has to be normal and I'm just obsessed with you both so keep it up love yous and uh just love the pod cheers oh thank you so much
isn't that lovely really nice thank you very much Marie Isn't that lovely? Really nice. Thank you very much, Marie.
I think we should end it there.
Okay.
Bye.
Bye, darling.
I was going to mention about the shopping bag.
You know when you were saying about the shopping bags of the life of Nat on?
Yeah.
Because tonight you actually, you did what I did.
Yeah. that on yeah because tonight you actually you did what I did despite the fact for ages I
have not heard anything
about all you've ever
said is oh you
shouldn't have done
that and it's terrible
and now you do it if I
need five six items yeah
I go in with my bag
without a basket but
can we just talk about
that next time I think
we need to talk about
the next time because
you've changed your
mind on it next time
yeah thanks for listening bye hi this is chris mccausland and this is diane
