I have been married for a number of years now.
Yes, we are pushing closer to that 30-year mark.
We have just celebrated 28 years of marriage.
It is crazy.
I think I've got a picture of my beautiful wife.
This is my beautiful wife and I,
and I love hanging out with her.
She is my best friend.
When I got married, I did not realize how expensive women were.
Okay? Maybe not all women, but the one I married is. And she deserves every bit of it. I did not know what hair would cost. I didn't know what shoes caused. I thought we walked around barefoot. But I've come to find out, you got to have shoes, you got to get your hair done. And it has been a wonderful journey. But now I've discovered there's also this other thing called lashes, like lash extensions. There's a weave for your lashes. I did not know that.
okay when I got married and I discovered this I was like wait honey we got to make this a budget line item and I had a great mentor on my life like hey you make sure you take care of you after I'm like okay great I'll give plasma so now we've got these lashes that we're doing and I get a call one day and my wife Onika is frantic she is beside herself she is scared I could hear it in her voice Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl
Earl, I'm here at my last appointment and this guy just followed me up the steps that has been
yelling at me and berating me the entire time I'm walking up the steps.
Earl, I'm scared.
Earl, Earl, I feel like he might attack me.
And I'm like, I'm driving in the car.
I'm like, wait, what?
So, I mean, like any good husband, I know it's time to go kick somebody's butt, right?
I go, I'm angry.
Who's talking?
My wife?
Wait, what?
So I start driving there as fast as I can.
I got her location.
I start driving there as fast as I can.
I'm like, I haven't fought since, you know, eighth grade.
But I'm like, hey, I got this.
I'm ready to go.
I'm headed in that direction.
Then I realize, wait, I'm a pastor.
What am I going to do when I get there?
How am I going to beat this guy up in Jesus' name?
Didn't Jesus say, turn the other cheek?
but my wife is afraid.
So I start driving.
I call her head of security at the church.
I call her head of security.
I call Eddie.
He runs a jiu-jitsu gym.
And I call Eddie.
I say, hey, Eddie.
He used to be a cop as well.
Eddie, this guy's yelling at my wife.
I'm on my way there right now.
And he starts telling me some things you can and can't say.
You can't say I'm going to kill you.
Can't say that.
If you say that, that's like a terrorist threat.
I didn't know that because I was definitely using that one.
There's no doubt about that.
So I'm free, okay, put that back here because I don't want to go to jail.
So he tells me some other things.
And he goes, wait, pastor, where's it at?
I'm coming with you.
I'm like, so I got me.
I got Eddie.
And I call another friend of mine, a crazy guy.
I call him.
And we got three of us.
We're on our way to where my wife gets her lashes done.
And we are about to throw down.
I don't know if this guy is 6, 9, 428 pounds.
I don't know if he's 5'2 and 88 pounds.
I have no idea, but I am on my way there.
We get there.
We bang on the guy's door.
You better open up this door.
You were yelling at my wife.
He opens up the door.
And really quickly, I realized I am not going to fight this guy.
Okay.
He's about that big.
He wasn't that big.
That was rude.
He was normal size.
But to me, with the anger I had in my heart,
I say all that to say, and no hands were thrown.
own and we diffuse a situation and we're telling him you need to apologize to my wife.
What I'm saying to you is in that moment when I found out my wife had someone coming against
her like that, there was a mighty warrior that rose up on the inside of me.
I was ready to fight for her.
I love her.
She's my best friend and the best mom and the best wife in the entire world, a fantastic leader.
I was going to be there for her no matter what.
Something rogues up on the inside of me.
What I have found with a lot of us, though,
is we have some situations in life where we do feel like this fight rises up in us.
But I've also found with a lot of people and a lot of areas and a lot of states and a lot of cities all over the world,
that a lot of us have also lost our fight.
We've lost that edge.
We've lost that, that, hey, I'm getting in the car right now, and I'm going to drive wherever I need to drive and do whatever I need to do.
Now, maybe, maybe when you're at home with your family, there's that fire and there's that strength.
But then when you go to school or you go to the boardroom, that's where you begin to shrink back a little bit.
Maybe, maybe at church you walk around with confidence.
But when you're in your neighborhood, you seem to drop your shoulders a little bit and tilt your head down a little bit more.
and walk around as if your life does not matter.
Some of us have areas of our life where we feel like we're a mighty warrior,
but we've got some other areas of our life where we don't feel like a mighty warrior at all.
And I feel like God has me on assignment this weekend to remind every single one of us
that the Lord is with you, mighty warrior.
I want to remind you that God's hand is on your life for such a time as this.
I want to remind you that you're not just an accident and you did not just show up in this earth
and in this moment just by happenstance.
God wants to awaken something on the inside of you.
And here at Life Church, there are some sleeping giants,
individuals that God has his hand on for such a time as this.
And I'm not just talking about the person to your right or to your left.
I'm talking about you.
I'm talking about teenagers and I'm talking about
retirees as well. I'm talking to single people and I'm talking to married people. I'm talking to
people whose marriages are so great right now. And I'm talking to people whose marriages might feel
like it's on the rocks. I'm telling you that the Lord is with you, mighty warrior. Well, how do you
know this, Earl? Because I know the goodness of our God. I know the power of the cross of Jesus Christ.
And I know the authority of the word of God. And he's speaking that over every single one of us today.
Lord is with you, mighty warrior. Now, this is what's unique because God does not call him what he's doing.
He calls him what he's destined to be because what he's doing, he's actually hiding.
Look at this. Look, verse number 13 of chapter 6. Pardon me, my lord. He was just told by the Lord.
he's a mighty warrior. And he goes, pardon me, my lord.
Question, question, getting replied.
But if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Have you ever asked God that question?
We're all the wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?
But now the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of many.
the Lord turned to him and said,
Go in the strength you have
and save Israel
out of Midian's hand.
Am I not
sending you?
Pardon me, my Lord, Gideon replied.
But how can I save Israel?
My clan is the weakest in Manassah
and I am the least in my family.
The Lord answered, I will be with you
and you will strike down all the Midianites
leaving none.
alive.
The Lord is with you, mighty worry.
The Lord is with you, mighty worry.
Lord is with you, mighty worry.
He starts calling him
what he's destined to be, not just what he's doing,
because he's essentially working on his golf swing in a closet,
a small closet.
Not an expansive closet, a small closet.
He's threshing wheat in this wine press,
trying to hide it from his oppressors.
And he's got a custom and he has built a life.
where he can hide out in a closet
and not be the leader that God is trying to call him to be.
It makes sense to hide out when you've got an oppressor.
And for a lot of us, we've made a lot of excuses.
We've said a lot of things about ourselves.
And I recognize this, that some of us have even had family members
that have spoken some things over us
that have caused us to retreat and take some steps backwards.
Some of us had a coach that said something to us
and caused us to retreat backwards.
Some of us had parents or grandparents or an aunt or an uncle or an ex that said something to us.
And it's branded in our brain.
And when the Bible is telling us you're a mighty warrior, you and I are hearing something else.
We're hearing we're a failure.
We're hearing we're not worth that much.
We're hearing we're the worst of everybody.
We're hearing we're a drunk.
We're hearing we're addicted.
We're hearing all these other things.
But God is trying to say something else.
And now you and I need to align ourselves with the word of God.
I have three great kids.
My wife and I, we got these three great, great kids.
Our oldest son, his name is Parker.
I think I got a picture of Parker.
Parker is now 20 years old.
I remember the one picture in the middle is when he was a baby that was his one-year-old
birthday party.
Cowboy theme.
Adorable.
Okay.
So he's just the cutest little guy.
When he came out the womb, he was ugly.
Not lying, y'all.
I didn't want to show those pictures.
It would distract you.
Okay.
four months of his life, ugly baby. But then at four months, God did a work in his life. Boom,
change happened. And he got so, so cute. And he's been cute ever since. And, but the Lord wanted
to humble him for those first four months. But you see here in, in that baby picture, he's adorable,
and he's been by my side our whole life, one that is putting him down to bed. And I wrote about
this story in this book, Get Your Spirit Back.
He was putting him down to bed, and he started scratching his skin like this.
I was like, what are you doing, son?
He goes, oh, I'm trying to get, this is very hard to hear.
Because I'm trying to get the brown off.
Son, what do you mean you trying to get the brown off?
He's five, you know, we're just talking at bedtime.
I'm trying to get the brown off.
I wanted to be peach, Dad.
I wanted to be peach.
Like my friends.
Well, I mean, I love peach people, too.
Don't get me wrong.
I even got a child.
That's actually half peach and half Latina.
That's our little girl.
But she wasn't around at this time.
It was just me and my wife and Parker.
And I've got my son at bedtime.
Scratching at his skin.
There were a ton of emotions that, you know, had to work through.
But one thing we started doing, I was like, honey, we're going to tack this head on.
We're going to make sure this young man knows he is made in the image of God for the purpose of God, called by God, that he is exactly how God designed him to be, that he is put on this earth for reason and for purpose.
So we started something at our house called Words of Power.
Words of power. And every night we put our kids down to bed. First thing we do is Psalm chapter 1,
verse number 36. And I say the first part. They say the next part. Give thanks to the God of God.
His love endures forever. Back and forth. Back and forth. We say Daniel chapter one, verse number four
together. We say our shoreline city creed. Together I am loved by God. I cannot earn and I cannot
lose it. And Christ, I am forgiven and made brand new. I live with passion and purpose. I'm empowered by the
spirit to be the church of the world and to live for the glory of God. We say that. And then we start doing
words of power. And I say, Parker, repeat after me. I'm blessed. I'm healed. I'm healed. I'm healed. I'm
loved by God. I'm loved by God. I'm called for such a time. It says, I'm called for such a time as this.
I'm fearfully and wonderfully made. I'm fearfully and wonderfully made. What's that mean that? Don't matter.
Just keep repeating after me. I love my skin. I love my skin. I love how God made me. I love how God
made me. I'm honoring. I'm encouraging. I'm Christlike. I'm kind. I was put on this earth for such a time as this.
we started making sure he said out of his mouth
what was consistent with the word of God
so his mind could be transformed by the word of God
so then he could be 20 years old
and now he can walk around into any room
and he's not scratching his skin anymore.
As a matter of fact, he's celebrating people for who they are
but he's also celebrating Jesus for who Jesus is
and this man is living his life
for the cause of Jesus Christ
walking with humility and confidence.
Can I tell you if you have
been scratching at something, if you've been trying to get rid of something, and maybe it was
something that was even painful, it was something that was hurtful. Let me tell you, God can even
use the parts of your life that have been painful. He'll take the broken pieces of your life
and somehow, some way, put those things together and say, son or daughter, I'll even use the
dark parts of your life to bring my name glory. You don't have to scratch that thing away. I'll
heal it. I'll redeem it. I'll make it all right.
So grateful that my son began to get in alignment with God's word.
Here's the thing.
When God says it, you're invited to believe it.
It's an invitation.
It's an invitation to you.
It's invitation.
Come on in.
Come on in.
And sometimes you get an invitation.
You think, what, does this come to the wrong house?
It didn't come to the wrong house.
You're a leader.
It's an invitation.
You're healed.
It's an invitation.
You're loved and accepted by the cross of Jesus Christ.
It's an invitation.
Do you want to come on in?
Can we please begin to be a people that will live our lives saying yes to the invitation that
the cross of Jesus Christ has given us?
There is an empty grave signifying that he's,
He defeated death, hell, and the grave.
And he is inviting all of us into this new life.
Now, here's the thing about Gideon.
Gideon goes in these verses we just read,
and I read a bunch of them.
But this guy being, you know, really scared,
really intimidated.
A really, I don't know if I would say shy,
but maybe you could put the word shy.
on there. And he's got all these reasons why God cannot use him, just like me and just like you.
You've got these reasons. Well, this happened when I was this age and this happened at this age and this
age and I don't look like this and I didn't go to that school. I didn't do this thing and I'm a man or I'm a woman or I'm married or I'm single or I'm old or I'm young.
All these reasons that we have to disqualify ourselves from what God can do in our lives. St. Gideon gives all these reasons.
And then there's a point in time. It is wild to me that this is.
happens. Go with me to Judges Chapter 8 real quick. Judges Chapter 8. I got to give you guys some
of the stuff too. Go with me to Judge this chapter 8 real fast. I want you to see. In chapter 6,
Gideon is arguing with the Lord. Not me, Lord, not me, Lord, can't pick me, Lord, can't choose me
Lord, not me, Lord, I'm too old, I'm too young, I'm too this, I'm too that, can't pick me, can't pick me, can't pick me,
there's no way I can be on the serve team. I can't volunteer here, Lord. No, I don't want to
join the church. I'm just going to attend church because if I really join the church,
the church is going to implode because of all the sins that I've committed, Lord, I can't
take that step of faith. I can't start that business. There's no way I can lead that team. I can't
do that, Lord. You know me, you know me, you know me. So that is him in Judges chapter six. That's a lot of
us. Judges chapter 8, look at how Gideon is talking. Okay, look at this in verse number four.
Gideon and his 300 men exhausted, yet keeping up the pursuit, came to the
the Jordan and crossed it. He said to the men of Sucketh, give my troops some bread. They are worn out.
And I am still pursuing Ziba and Zamuna, the kings of Midian. But the officials of Suckets said, do you already have the hands of Ziba and Zalmuna in your possession?
Why should we give bread to your troops? Then Gideon replied, just for that,
Watch how he's talking now.
Just for that, when the Lord has given Zeba and Zamuna into my hand,
I will tear your flesh with desert thorns and briars.
I am not endorsing this behavior whatsoever.
This would be considered a terrorist threat, as Eddie told me.
But this guy right here says, hey, if you don't help me,
you don't give my troops bread
when I kill those kings and capture them
I'm gonna find you
your mama your grand mama
I'm coming after all of y'all
There's this massive switch that takes place
from the inside of it
Do you see that he goes from being intimidated
to confident? Do you see that it goes from being
insecure to being steadfast?
Do you see that it goes from hiding
to shouting? What in the world
happened in this guy that he would go
From that to this, there are so many things that happen, and I can't get into all of them right now.
But let me just pull out a couple of the truths that they can help all of us as we continue to move forward to try to be who God has called us to be.
Because God wants that switch to come on on the inside of you.
As a matter of fact, I'm praying at the end of this weekend that a switch has flipped on the inside of you, that you do get your spirit back.
And it's not a spirit of fear, but it's a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind.
The Holy Spirit flips on the inside of you that renewed, transformed spirit.
That's 2 Timothy chapter 1, verse number 7, if you want to know.
God did not give you a spirit of fear.
He gave you a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind.
God did not give you a spirit of fear.
He gave you a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind.
So if you're carrying around a spirit of fear, where'd you get it?
He didn't give it to you?
you pick this up someplace else.
Give it back.
It's not what God has for you.
Us Christians sometimes saying,
oh, it's going to be, I'm as a little Christian.
I just love Jesus.
You know, I'm a sweet little Christian,
and I just, you know, I don't want to ruffle any feathers.
I just, I'm a sweet little Christian.
I'm like, you can be sweet.
You ought to be humble.
We want to make sure we're modeling the character of Jesus Christ,
don't doubt about that.
But I also want to make sure there's a lion on the inside of you.
You recognize that the lion of the tribe of Judah is the one,
the resurrection life of Jesus is on the inside of you.
That the God who created the heavens and the earth calls you son or daughter.
Why in the world would you be walking around sheepish when God says you belong to him?
Walk into that boardroom, that house, that office, walk into that teenager's bedroom
and remind them that this is God's house.
We are living for his glory and his fame.
And as you and I begin to lift up the name of Jesus,
Jesus, let's see this switch come on in the inside of us.
So how does it happen?
Let me give you two things.
I'm just give you two things from his story.
Okay, there's a lot of things.
I'm going to give you two things, okay?
First thing, tear down the altars.
Tear down the altars.
Go with me to Judges.
Chapter 6, real quick.
Judge you chapter 6, verse 25.
There's too many verses.
You all still with me?
Y'all still with me?
Come on, all of our campuses are still with me.
You still with me? Come on, Judges chapter 6, verse 25. After that interaction Gideon had with the Lord,
verse 25, that same night the Lord said to him, said to Gideon, take the second bowl from your
father's herd, the one seven years old, tear down your father's altar to bail, and cut down
the ashrapole beside it. Then build a proper kind of altar to the Lord your God on the top of
this height, using the wood of the ashrapole that you cut down after,
offer, rather, the second bull as a burnt offering.
So Gideon took 10 of his servants and did as the Lord told him.
Watch this.
But because he was afraid of his family and the townspeople,
he did it at night rather than in the daytime.
in the morning
when the people of the town
got up there was Bail's altar
demolished with the Ashropole beside it
cut down and the second
bull sacrifice of the newly built
altar. He has
to go backwards
in order to go
forward.
He gets there
and he now has to
tear down the altar
that his father built.
What in your
life has been set up in your family, maybe for generations that you've tolerated,
and have been unwilling to deal with and said, I'm going to step away from.
And God is telling you, son or daughter, I want you to tear down that altar.
I want you to confront it head on.
I know we've clapped a lot and we smiled a lot, we've laughed.
It's beautiful.
I love doing that.
But let's not lose sight of the fact that the Holy Spirit is working here
and trying to actually change us and transform us until he's called us to be.
And in order for that to happen many times,
you and I have to be willing to go places.
Maybe we weren't thinking we needed to go.
Tear down the altars.
For me personally, and I won't get into this deeply,
I had to deal with the altar of sexual addiction.
my family. I had to go tear down this pornography that was trickling down from man to man to man.
Go, whoa, whoa, whoa, Lord, by your grace and by your power. And I'm giving you a high level here.
There's a lot of soul work that needs to be done confession and honesty and repentance and humility.
And there's a lot of things that go into all of this. But nonetheless, you got to be willing to do it.
And I appreciate the story here because it says Gideon did it at night because he was afraid.
he did it scared.
See you think, I got to have all the faith in the world.
You might not have all the faith in the world right now.
Do it scared.
You might be incredibly intimidated with what you got to face.
Do it scared.
You might be shaking in your boots.
Do it scared.
And I'm telling you, you've got a church family behind you
that is praying for you and believing for God's best
in every single air of your life.
You'll have a life group leader, a campus pastor.
You're going to have a whole church saying son,
daughter of God.
You got this. You want your spirit back? You want to be who God has called you to be.
You got to be willing to tear down some altars.
Lastly, again, we got a whole bunch of pieces in here, but I want to leave this one with you.
You got to move forward in faith.
You have to move forward in faith.
In Judges Chapter 7, you can read that Gideon, Judges Chapter 7, verses 2 and 3.
I'm going to put it on the screen for you.
They're there, camped about.
and you're reading where they're camped.
And then by the time you get to verse number three,
you see the Lord saying to them,
hey, you got too many people.
You got too many people.
I'm sorry.
You've got to chop down the army.
Chop it down because if you win with this many people,
you're going to think it's you.
And I don't want you thinking it's you because this is me.
I'm getting the glory for this.
You're not getting the glory for this.
And you see that there are 22,000 that are left 10,000 decided to leave.
That means there were 32,000 individuals that Gideon had the,
leadership to be able to pull together. And then after a little while, skip down with me to
verse number seven, put that on the screen, you will find out that there's only 300 guys left.
Okay? This is not going the right direction if you're going to fight a battle. I want to have more,
not less. But God says, I can do more with less. So you think I got to have, no, you don't
need to have more. You got to have obedience and be willing to move forward with faith.
And there is a moment that Gideon takes a step of faith with only 300 warriors.
And God amplifies their sound and he does something with 300 that he thought it would take 32,000.
But God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all we can ask, think or even imagine.
And just like he did it with Gideon, he's going to do it with you.
I want you to know.
God wants you to get your spirit back.
Why?
So that you can be elevated?
it may be, but ultimately it's about Jesus Christ being elevated about his name,
being made famous throughout the entire earth and about individuals coming to the hope
and the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
And yes, in that, you're going to show your sons and your daughters what it looks like
to be a man or a woman of God that walks with integrity and character, and I'm willing to move
forward even if I don't feel it.
I'm going to trust you, God, no matter what is coming my way.
And if things around me are beginning to fall, I'm still going to change.
trust you because I know that you're good and your mercy endures forever.
So I'm going to speak your word. I'm going to lift my hands. I'm going to clap my hands if I
need to because God is good and God is faithful. And in Jesus' name, I'm praying.
Every person you would get your spirit back. Father, in the name of Jesus. Over every location as our
heads are bowed.
would you pour out your love
would you pour out your hope
would you help us to trust you
we surrender our hearts
and our lives
we pray that you would change us and transform us
from the inside
in Jesus night
amen amen
hey can you guys tell
Pastoril thank you
ah
how many of you feel like you might
already be getting your spirit back
Hey, today as we continue in an attitude of prayer, we just ask God that you would do a work in us as you're praying today without looking around.
I wonder how many of you would say, hey, I want God to give me my spirit back.
Maybe you've lost confidence.
Maybe you've been afraid.
Maybe you've been believing lies about yourself instead of believing who God says you are.
I want to tell you right now, you are not who I'm not.
Others say you are. You're not who your enemy says you are. You're not even who the voice is in your
heads say you are. You are who God says you are. And if you're in Christ, he says, you have the same
spirit that raised Christ from the dead. You are a mighty warrior today at all of our churches.
If you've been discouraged, maybe even afraid you've lost your confidence in God, you want to get
your spirit back. Would you lift up your hands right now? Just lift them up all over the place
and say, yes, God, build my faith, build my courage. His hands are going up online. Just type
in the comment section.
God, help me get my spirit back.
Father, thank you that you are a resurrection, God.
Resurrect your spirit in us, God.
We thank you that you have not given us a spirit of fear,
but a spirit of power, of love, and of a sound mind.
God, renew our minds with your truth.
Show us who we are in Christ.
And God will tear down the altars and will do it afraid
and will do it with faith in you because your word
is always true, God, give us our spirit back, our faith back in you.
As you keep praying today at all of our different churches and those of you around the world
online, some of you say, hey, like, I don't know if I ever had it in the first place.
What do you mean?
If I sat down with you and we could just have a one-on-one conversation and maybe I could ask you,
like, where do you stand with God?
If you hesitated or maybe if you were looking for words, I might just say,
as your friend or pastorally, maybe you've never really experienced the goodness and grace of
Jesus.
Who is Jesus?
He is the son of God who is perfect in every way.
He never sinned.
And because he was perfect, he died in our place for the forgiveness of sins.
And guess what?
He didn't stay dead.
Our God raised Jesus from the dead.
Jesus defeated death, hell in the grave now.
so anyone who puts their faith in him, you'd be saved, you'd be forgiven, not by your good works,
but by his perfect work. Today at all of our churches, there are some of you, you don't know
where you stand with God. Let me just say very confidently, you are not here by accident.
You're not watching this message by accident. You're watching this message because God
is reaching out to you and drawing you today. So if you don't know where you stand and you're ready to
say, yes, God, I want to give you my life. What we're going to do is we're going to step away
from our sins and we're going to say yes to Jesus. It is an invitation. Jesus is standing. The Bible
actually says at the door and knocking. If you'll let him in, he'll come in, he'll forgive you.
He'll change your life. He'll make you new. At all of our churches around the world online,
those who say, hey, I want that. I want, I need that. I need forgiveness. Today by faith, I step away from
my sin. I give my life to Jesus. That's your prayer today. Say yes, Jesus, I give you my life. Would you
