Super Bowl 60 is in the books, and if you are looking for two miserable Patriots fans reacting to the game, you've found the right place.
Welcome into the lineup football show. I'm Mitch Anderson.
I'm Justin Mello.
And we are going to jump right into our Super Bowl 60 reaction.
Seahawks 29, Patriots 13.
I had predicted Patriots 27, 24. Mello had Patriots 24-23.
Just off. We were just off. So close.
By a hair.
If one or two plays had gone differently, we would.
probably still be off by like two touchdowns.
Yep.
Give me your initial thoughts on the game.
Miserable is the perfect word.
You said it.
That's how I feel right now.
I'm not happily miserable.
I'm literally miserable.
I mean like cut this off of my sweatshirt.
Yep.
That's, you know when something really bad happens and you wake up in the middle of the
night and you have to take like two or three seconds to ask yourself if it's real or if it
was a bad dream?
I said that last night.
I'm not even kidding.
It was like halftime.
and I was probably like five or six
Coors Banquets Deep
and I literally like turned to someone next to me
and I was like I kind of feel like I'm in a nightmare right now
Yeah that it felt like a nightmare
I woke up cold sweats like that happened right
And I'm like shit yeah it happened went back to sleep
But I will try for the majority of this podcast
To be impartial yeah me too
And give the Seahawks their credit because they deserve it
We've talked about it on this show
I think a lot of people have talked about it
they were the best team all year.
They were incredible all three phases.
Defense wins championships.
Their defense was great.
I think they were like the third highest DVOA of all time,
something like that.
Really a phenomenal team that deserved it.
Ken Walker, incredible.
He's actually going to hit free agency.
Unstoppable with those big plays.
He's going to get paid because of this game.
Because of this whole playoff run,
I don't know where he'll be next year.
Maybe Seattle does sort of open up the bag for him,
but regardless, like, he is going to get paid.
100%.
I don't know if it's like the bald thing,
but like sometimes you just watch Ken Walker
and there's like a little bit of Adrian Peterson.
And I think it's like almost like 90% the bald thing.
Yeah, the bald thing, I think has a big role in that.
Have you ever heard him talk, by the way?
Yeah, I can't put my finger off by no.
It's like a higher voice, right?
He doesn't sound like, yeah.
it's not the voice I would expect.
I personally didn't watch, like, his, I was going to watch it today, his, like, MVP presser.
But I will keep an eye out for it, an ear out for it, if you will.
Yeah, it's not what you'd expect.
I wanted to point out, Sam Darnold was so evasive last night, like, in the pocket.
Every time the pass were getting to him, you would, like, start to jump up.
You're like, yes, we got him, and he'd slip out.
It was like watching Prime Michael Vick.
I was like screaming at my TV.
I was like everyone's like overly aggressive drunk uncle on Thanksgiving.
Just screaming at the TV because, yeah, Donald overall didn't really play all that well.
No, neither quarterback did.
Yeah.
Neither quarterback played that well.
But one thing Donald did phenomenal was you're right.
Just like spinning out of sack.
Extending plays.
the pressure.
There were like seven or eight plays in the first half that seemed like
surefire sacks where I already was like clapping like, yep, we got them.
And then that slippery son of a bitch got out of it.
So 100%.
It kept happening on third down too, which was like the even more frustrating part.
Something we talked about was like not letting Sam Darnold get comfortable should be the Patriots
game plan.
And you have to give the defense credit like in the first quarter like he did not
look comfortable.
He was hanging balls out there.
It was like, you kept being like, oh, if the Patriots were like a foot over here, a foot over there, like you could create a turnover.
And like credit to Sam Darnold, though, he settled in.
And I thought in the second half, like, again, they didn't ask him to do anything crazy.
But like I thought he looked like a quarterback that deserved to win a Super Bowl.
Yeah, he did.
I mean, he did enough.
He played a turnover free game, didn't take a sack until the second half despite constant pressure.
So he absolutely did.
enough. Yeah, I thought that was crazy. What was it? 5-20 sacks in the first half?
Yeah. Which, man, the left side of that line just got obliterated by the Seahawks pass rush.
Yeah, Will Campbell, 14 pressures allowed most, I believe in playoff history, not good, not good at all.
There's, I feel that for Will Campbell because of all the guys on that team, the most conversation
are probably going to be about Will Campbell
over the offseason if he's got it.
Like, I think every Patriots fans,
that was a horrific performance by Drake May.
But Drake May is the guy,
and, like, you build on a season like this
and, like, there's no concern at all there.
Will Campbell, it's a little bit like,
okay, we just watched, like, a whole postseason there
where it was, like, brutal.
Yeah, I think there'll be a lot of talk about
maybe moving him to guard,
which is tough because you spent a fourth overall pick on him.
And it's not like you can just magically get this new left tackle who will be good.
It's tough.
You got the 31st overall pick.
There's not too many tackles that hit free agency.
So I don't know what the Patriots do,
but those conversations are definitely happening this offseason.
100%.
Let's move on, get a little more granular in this game.
What was your biggest moment of the game?
For me, I think there were a lot of plays on the same.
second half that felt like the dagger for the Seahawks. They were in control the whole game.
But to me, as a Patriots fan, I can tell you the moment that I was like, it's over, was the AJ
Barner touchdown. Yeah. And I know the Patriots actually scored two touchdowns after that,
but clearly, I mean, they still lost by 16. For me, the Barner touchdown was dagger. Because
if the Seahawks got a field goal there, it's still manageable for the Patriots, like 15 points,
two scores, like, could have been doable. The touchdown,
was game set match.
Yeah.
I think if you view it from that perspective,
like when did the game end?
I completely agree.
But the moment for me,
the pick six just felt so like,
this is the championship DVD
and like the play.
And Seattle fans can correct me,
but like that had to be the play
where you're like,
get the champagne bottle, like, we're good.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's fair.
And it felt like a,
everything that the game had been building up to
was Drake May not looking quite right.
The Patriots offense just looking off,
the pressure getting to him like over and over and over again,
the pocket collapsing.
And then finally it's just like,
here it is, here's the big turnover, touchdown,
and like Seattle just runs away with it.
Yeah, kind of reminiscent of, what was it,
like Super Bowl 37, I think,
the Buccaneers Raiders where the Buccaneers just dominated.
They got a late defensive touchdown.
It was just like, they were already partying on the sideline.
That's what it felt like last night.
100% I I'm curious and like people can sound off in the comments like how this game felt as an objective viewer because to me I tried to take myself out of it after and be like if I was like a panthers fan watching this like I feel like it was a very not exciting game of football and like you have those little like crumbs of like excitement where I would say the Barner TD the Mac Collins TD if you were rooting for the game to be close and then the pick six for just like a defense.
of touchdowns always crazy.
Yeah, we actually got, what,
four touchdowns in the last probably
like 20 minutes of the game.
So it did get a little bit exciting
in that regard, but it also was kind of over
at that point.
Has the touchdown ever had less juice
than the Romandre touchdown?
I don't even think I heard
like a clap in the room.
It was just like, sure, why not?
Yeah, now I,
even in my delusional Patriots fan brain
couldn't talk myself into it
being a game.
I was like, it,
Doesn't matter.
What surprised you in this game?
Drake May was horrible.
Drake May was really bad.
And it sucks to say.
Yeah, it hurts me.
I was optimistic that playing in 60-something degrees in the sun,
like, despite a tough matchup, he was going to bounce back.
I thought the cold was a big part of his playoff struggles.
But he had 295 yards, but a lot of that was great.
garbage time kind of empty.
He was under a lot of pressure, but even when he wasn't, he seemed hurried.
He seemed uncomfortable.
A lot of errand throws.
He wasn't seeing the whole field.
He had some open guys he was missing.
He had plays where guys weren't open and he tried to extend it.
That one that he just sailed over his head was so tough to watch.
Yeah, it was tough.
I mean, two things can be true at once.
Thing one is that Drake May is incredible.
He had an awesome year.
He's got a very bright future.
and I'm optimistic about the rest of his career.
The second thing being that he played absolutely terrible in this game.
100%.
And that surprised me.
What was a little less surprising is how bad Will Campbell was.
We don't have to harp on it.
We've already talked about a little bit.
He might be a guard.
I don't know that he can play a left tackle in this league.
And one other thing that surprised me is how the Seahawks won so comfortably
without JSN really being a factor at all.
Like he was...
Yeah.
I mean, he didn't even play.
for like a full quarter because of the concussion protocol.
I know he had like four yards with like five targets at half time.
I think it was like 30 something.
I'll have it look,
but it was not a lot.
It was maybe his quietest game of the year and the Seahawks still just dominated.
Yeah, insane.
I think my surprises was Kenneth Walker.
Just like, I don't know, we just kept betting against Kenneth Walker and
Kenneth Walker must be the house because the house always won and Kenneth Walker always beat us.
And I think he deserves a little bit more respect for me at least
because that Patriots defense had been bottling up running backs all year
and Kenneth Walker just like had his way with them.
Yeah, I think he deserves the credit.
Once some of those runs, it looked like there was nothing there
and then that's just quick bounce to the outside,
no edge set.
Like he was just taking advantage of this Patriots defense on those big plays
and it made all the difference.
Not to mention,
you would have won set the line
if you had taken Kenneth Walker's over.
I know, dude.
I was like, I didn't find the clip of you saying,
like, my heart wants to pick Kenneth Walker,
but I'm not going to bet with Kenneth Walker.
I'm going to bet against him.
That was like, I just looked at this morning.
I was like, dude, that's actually so funny.
So did I lose by one, or did we tie?
I think we would have tied.
Yeah, we would have tied.
Yeah, we would have tied.
We would have tied, yeah.
Yeah, two weeks in a row
I took Kenneth Walker. I hate Kenneth Walker.
I don't actually hate Kenneth Walker.
He's a great running back
and he seems like a pretty likable dude too.
But for selfish reasons
that Ken Walker doesn't care about,
I hate Ken Walker.
No, I think Ken Walker cares about
how we perform for your fantasy team
and on our set the line segment
in our podcast.
He should. He certainly should.
That's got to be top of mind
morning after winning Super Bowl MVP.
One would think, but you never know
these guys. My only other surprise was just like, yeah, this offense just looked like so inept
and so like disjointed. And yeah, I was just, I think I was just shocked at how much this game
got out of hand and how little offense there was in the first half. But give me your final
thoughts on the game before we get out of here. Final thoughts on this game that hurts me to
reflect on.
I feel emotional pain.
I've made that pretty clear,
but just want to reemphasize that.
But on a more serious note,
just to give the Seahawks
the credit they deserve one more time,
they will be remembered as a Super Bowl winning team,
obviously because they won the Super Bowl.
But they really should be remembered
as an elite Super Bowl winning team.
I think history might not
remember how dominant this team was
because I think a lot of
of the narrative is like Sam Darnold, like, you know, reclamation, bounce back,
come back kind of story, feel good kind of story. And that might be how we remember this team,
which is fair and true. But we also should remember them as actually one of the better teams,
like of all time. They, based on every metric, were dominant this whole year, especially on defense,
but offense was great, special teams were great. This is one of the better Super Bowl winners
of the last couple decades.
Like, this was a truly phenomenal football team,
and we should remember them as that.
Talking about all three phases,
like, even, like, Dixon, punting, like, every time.
It was just, like, there was no player on that team
that wasn't, like, clicking last night.
And, like, I completely agree that, like,
sometimes, like, narratives and storylines
get a little out of control,
and, like, we are all focused on the Sam Darnold of it all
when, like, this team as a whole
deserves so much credit for just how good they were.
Yeah, a true buzz saw.
Just an unbelievable team.
They deserve the Super Bowl without question.
My final thoughts were just,
I hope America enjoyed watching the Patriots lose and Bad Bunny
because outside of that there wasn't much to enjoy.
The best team won.
I'm really excited to see next year.
I'm like, how real is this Seattle team, like, going into next year?
And how real are the Patriots?
Are we just going to see the usual suspects?
Is it going to be Bill's chiefs in the AFC championship?
Or is this Drake Man?
experience for real.
I'm going to say the thing
that I said on a previous podcast
that I hate saying
but I pray to God
this isn't a Joe Burrow
going to the Super Bowl
in his second year situation.
Yep.
I have the same exact thought.
I'm also going to say another thing
that for me
and the Sam Darnold top 10
truthers,
Sam Darnold's a top 10 quarterback.
And that is my final thought
of the episode.
I won't argue.
After my Patriots got
blown out by Sam Darnold, I cannot say anything but that. So I will not argue.
Sam Darnold's top 10, but find out on Thursday if Ken Walker is in our top 12 fantasy football
running backs. Thank you guys for watching. We'll be back on Thursday breaking those down.
