Starting point is 00:00:00 Okay, some people are gonna say that the Frieza saga is better the cell saga Look the tournament arc is the bread and butter of these the Dragon Ball Z you you Haka show bleach you name it They all got tournament arcs. I'm dying to fucking see what a Gundam tournament art looks like cuz I don't remember it We're nearly there Joe we'd be there in the next episode I know well no the next episode of this podcast is gonna know. Well, no, the next episode of this podcast is going to be also I'm going to bleep that out. So like it's a slur. It should be a slur. It's that bad. I need to fucking bleep that one out too.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Well, yeah. So essentially they're still trapped by the snake heads and they there is a very lines by donkeys, you know, episode, there's an encroaching army surrounding them all three sides and they have to formulate a plan on how they're going to escape to go to at Neo Hong Kong. And they put all of this military operation in the hands of the most capable person available to them because they do not listen to lines led by donkeys they pick the Russian We need the more Gundam we send enough Gundam they run out of bullets with the the man with the Gundam shoots When the man with the Gundam is killed the man without the Gundam runs forward puts on the skin tight is killed the man without the Gundam runs forward puts on the skin tight Domon body suit and shoots
Starting point is 00:01:31 no he rips open Domon and puts Domon's skin on because it would take too much time to put on you know the skin suit slip into Domon yes it's slip into Almond Cashew um yeah like you got Almond Cashew who was like um like he is for the count because Shining Gundam is all fucked up so you have the other members of the Shuffle Alliance and Spruudel Snyder the German guy. Another point that pisses me off. Oh we do get a we do get a slight reminder that Reign is not a mechanic but is in fact a medical doctor during this episode, which has only become important twice in 24 episodes. Yeah, I'm like, because I thought it was like, oh, she's like a like a has a doctorate of
Starting point is 00:02:15 engineering, Gundam studies. So does that mean that the the internals of the Gundam are like directly applicable to the human physiology? I think we may have accidentally crossed into our future series that we're going to do, which is you're going to make me watch Evangelion and I'm going to lose my mind, is that the internal components of a Gundam are actually just flesh. She's a, she's a Gundam fleshmancer. The Gundam is meat. Yeah. So like rain is sick, but she's like repairing Shining Gundam, the rest of the Shuffle Alliance are, you know, they're doing Henry Kissinger in Cambodia stuff, they're
Starting point is 00:02:55 planting landmines everywhere. With the help of regular soldiers? Yeah. Imagine how much that job would suck. You're a regular soldier doing manual labor while men in giant battle robots watch on. Like, guys you could just do this without me. Don't get me involved in your robot war. I am but a man. Even more so, they are neo-russian soldiers. Yeah. So you know at best they're probably prisoners or conscripts.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Or both. I mean to be fair, Argo Golski is literally both. It's Gundam Wagner. Literally they have invented neo-Wagner group, RIP Dmitry Prokosian. Died on my birthday. No, he didn't die on my birthday. So there was, I made this joke on Twitter, but I don't think I've ever pointed this out here,
Starting point is 00:03:49 which was for a several year long streak, horrible things were happening on my birthday. One year Roe V. Wade was overturned in the United States. The year after that, Purgosian attempted to overthrow the Russian government on my birthday. I was in Yerevan at a birthday party with my friends and everybody's phone starts going off and we start looking down like, oh, that's probably not good. This year I was safe.
Starting point is 00:04:17 This year nothing horrible happened on June 24th. There was the attempted coup in Bolivia, but that didn't go great. So that failed. I get a pass. That wasn't bad because it didn't succeed. Also, it was like the 25th. So it was like, depending on the time zone or whatever. I'm claiming innocence.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Yeah. So they're like, they break up into like different formations around the area. They're planting landmines. Schwartz Bruder like gets a flare, a flare mine. And it's like, oh, I just need this. I'm going to fuck off for the rest of this episode. And then I'm escaping into the plot vortex. Yeah, the plot vortex.
Starting point is 00:04:57 It's where we should send all Germans. And you are sentenced to plot vortex. Yeah, you've heard of plot armor. Welcome to to plot vortex. Yeah, you've heard of plot armor. Welcome to the plot vortex. If you're a super powered character and your inclusion on any plot simply ends that plot, you have to be hidden into it. Because at any point, Schwartz can end all of this. He goes toe to toe with Master Asia later.
Starting point is 00:05:23 This man is very, very strong. He's going to go hide under the waterfall and meditate and shit Yeah, so like you have JJ Abrams like mystery box thing now We have the plot vortex which is like I think what Zack Schneider operates on that like oh, yeah all those plot lines Yeah, don't worry during the plot vortex Watch the 18 hour cut of fucking Justice League and then you'll find out. Release the shorts cut. Yeah. Like like this episode is kind of like there's not a huge amount like there is a cool battle that happens.
Starting point is 00:05:55 We get a full on montage for the first time. Like we get a montage of the dark army stepping on landmines for a whole bunch. It's set to heroic sounding Japanese music. Also, great jazz soundtrack at the start of this episode as well. Some great jazz, like Japanese jazz sax soloing, which is great. It's good. But like that the the the level for jazz in anime is so high because of cowboy bebop that this is oddly mid to me. Like I barely even registered in. It's not, we're not, we're not playing like Cassiopeia or anything. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:31 But it's very like nineties anime in the sense of like, there's no actual animated movement. There's just like a Ken Burns style still of things exploding, but panning across the screen to do a document like a Ken Burns cell documentary of like a documentary of a Gundam war. Like the letters home and like the banjo music in the background, sad Gundam pilots. Somehow Shelby Foot is still involved. But I would watch that.
Starting point is 00:07:00 No, I want an Adam Curtis documentary about G Gundam. It's like, and at the same point, a very strange thing was happening in Guyana. The Guyana Highlands. You just get like a whole bunch of stills of the dark Gundam stepping on landmines repeated over and over and over again, because 90s anime loves reusing things over and over and over again, especially G Gundam. Holy shit, does G Gundam do it? Maybe I haven't watched a lot of these in a very long time and I kind of forget how prevalent it was for them to constantly reuse the same animations.
Starting point is 00:07:34 But in G Gundam, I cannot miss it. They reuse at least three to five shots every episode. Yeah, but it's because like it was the like it was the 90s and it was at this point where like unless you're doing something like maybe like Ninja Scroll or you're doing like kind of higher budget stuff that was made by like fucking Gainax. Which is why they constantly have money problems. RIP Gainax. I know, we have some robot news I guess. Gainax is out of business. But like Berserk from 1997 did this as well.
Starting point is 00:08:11 It's closer to like manga in that it's a still panel and there is sound and motion in terms of a pan to suggest movement, which is fine. That's fine. And I think that you mentioned all these titles. And I think when the main difference between all of those is like, nobody's ever going to say you should watch G Gundam. The art and animation is incredible. To be fair, to be fair. We'll get to it. We'll get to it. Because like, yeah, this stuff by Gainax, you know, Berserk amazing, not new Berserk.
Starting point is 00:08:44 That shit looks weird as fuck. but the original, the fan, there's a fan berserk series coming out and it looks fucking incredible. Rest in peace to our, to our main homie, man. Can't believe. RIP Kentaro Miura. Like they're continuing it. His assistants are continuing with Adam because apparently that was his dying wish. So like, you know, good luck to them. Yeah. But anyway, so the death army and master Asia advance and like they're kind of surrounded and then fucking Bruder like decides, OK, I'm going to bring some like kind of a plot point out of the plot vortex because Doman is like helping
Starting point is 00:09:24 rain because she has a fever and she's like sick. And he's like, I'm going to use my moron energy. You're going to tell me what to do and I'm going to fix the Gundam. Because that's how engineering works. Because through the power of love, she nearly falls off the Gundam and he catches her and then fixes. She falls in that like bullet time. The anime characters fall in, especially anime women when they need to be captured.
Starting point is 00:09:50 So they fall in like if they're in like the moon's gravity. It's called saving animation time. So you only have to animate them falling 10% of the way and then move the steel. Maybe Domo just has Spider-Man reflexes. He moves so fast, it looks like rain is falling slowly.
