Starting point is 00:00:02 You know, if you told us back in September that this matchup in week 11 between Clemson and Florida State would have zero implications on the ACC championship game or on a college football playoff spot, we probably would have called you crazy. But here we are. You are locked on ACC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference. Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. Shout out to the everydayers and thank you so much for making Lockdown ACC, this live game day edition of Lockedon ACC, your first listen and your first watch. We're available free, wherever you get your podcast. We're free on YouTube.
Starting point is 00:00:49 We're part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. He is Kenton Gibbs, former NC State defensive linemen and co-host of Lockdown Wolfpack. The Wolfpacker on a by week and well-earned, right? You want to go into a buy week on a high note. You upset Georgia Tech at homecoming at home last week. well-deserved buy week for Georgia Tech. I am Alex Dono from Locked on Caines. Miami is going to be trying to bounce back today at 3.30 against the slump buster,
Starting point is 00:01:17 which is what Syracuse has been. I mean, if you give up a loss to North Carolina last week, Miami has an opportunity to get back on track. There are numerous games this weekend, Kenton, featuring teams that have just one ACC loss, meaning they're in the ACC championship game picture, like SMU, who has what should be an easy one against Boston College on the road at noon. Virginia is zero conference losses. They're going to be at home against Wake Forest at 7 p.m. And number 15, Louisville, Virginia's 14, Louisville, number 15.
Starting point is 00:01:51 They're going to be hosting Cal. So all of those teams are very much in the ACC championship game picture. Georgia Tech is off this weekend, by the way. But as I mentioned in the opening, Kenton, would you have thought, you know, preseason, right? It was almost unanimous, the Clemson Tiger. were going to repeat as ACC champions this year. They're going to be in that college football playoff, maybe a true championship game contender.
Starting point is 00:02:15 We didn't necessarily feel this way about Florida State preseason, but after what they did to Alabama, week one, okay, Florida State has entered the chat. They have since exited the chat. And so this battle today at 7 p.m., which is going to be on the ACC network, by the way, no Nielsen ratings for that. You're going to have Florida State,
Starting point is 00:02:35 who's four and four overall, and one and four in the ACC, going up against three and five overall Clemson, who is two and four in the ACC. And as you mentioned to be off-air, KG, this is not a battle for the post. Well, it is a battle for the postseason because the loser of this game
Starting point is 00:02:53 may not end up bowl eligible. Yes, absolutely. If you look at these two teams and where they are right now, as you said, Dono, you're seeing two teams that are on the cusp of bowl eligibility right now or not even close.
Starting point is 00:03:07 If Clemson loses this game, they drop to three and six with Louisville heading to Louisville next. Now, do you know what that means for them? Three and six or three games left means they have to go what winning percentage to get into a bowl game number? A hundred. Undefeated. They need to win out their last three games, including beating a Louisville team that has looked phenomenal at times this year in order to get into a bowl game. And then you go and flip it over to the other side and you say, well, Florida State, surely must be better, Donald.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Florida State must surely not be in that same landscape of, oh, man, we're right up against it. What's Florida State's record again, Dono? They are four and four. So if they lose this game, then they will be four and five, three games left. They have to win two of their last three. This is a game that when you said coming into this, we were thinking postseason implications after the week one or week zero victory against BEMO. We're thinking postseason implications in terms of who's going to be where seeded in what game.
Starting point is 00:04:11 We're not thinking, hey, somebody's going to have to get ready to learn some quick lane bowl. Hey, somebody's going to have to get ready to learn some Shreveport R&L Carriers Bowl. But that's where we are. That's where we are with both of these teams, which is just flatly shocking. And honestly, I hate to say this, Donald. I really do. but these two teams and the laziness of the committee is why the ACC has the perception that they have. Let's be very honest about that.
Starting point is 00:04:42 Texas Tech, who have they beaten all year, Dono? Who has Texas Tech beaten that you look at and say, that's a hell of a win? Utah? No, yeah, that's it. That's it? It's an okay win. And then they lost to Arizona State? Oh, no Cam Scataboo.
Starting point is 00:05:01 No problem. They were the ones who beat you. Mind you, Arizona State has been men at best this year. Very mad. And yet they're still ranked in the top 10. Why? Because the perception of the big two, somebody had to fill that third spot.
Starting point is 00:05:18 You can't put both conferences in just a basement dweller kind of space here. And the Big 12 naturally took that void because our two big dogs, or two of our big dogs rather, did not come to eat this year. They have been very full, not hungry. I'm good. No need for seconds. Last year wasn't. And listen, and I'll take some accountability for Miami as well.
Starting point is 00:05:40 I know Miami is not like, you know, they're not that level when it comes to disappointing, but disappointing enough to where Miami's talent, they should not have two conference losses. They should be right there in the ACC championship game picture. And they are not because they, you know, committed 12 penalties and they lost to SFU and overtime on the road. So not to as high of a degree, because at least Miami's still kind of in the mix with two losses. But Clemson being where they are, no business there. And talking about this game for tonight, Kenton, between Clemson and Florida State, I think the betting line speaks loudly here.
Starting point is 00:06:18 It screams loudly that Clemson is only favored at home by a point in a half, which basically means Florida State is favored at home because home teams traditionally get about three points. especially in the case of Clemson, we're playing in that stadium that they refer to as Death Valley used to mean something. It used to. Now, Clemson, if you exclude the Troy game,
Starting point is 00:06:45 which you should exclude because it's Troy, who they beat at home this year, they are on a six-game home-losing streak against conference opponents and power-four opponents. Six straight losses home. That's the second most. in program history, home losses against power for opposition. If they lose to Florida State tonight, and I'm calling my shot, I think they will.
Starting point is 00:07:09 I think Florida State, you know, Florida State's issues have been really a lot of disjointed stuff, but they still have the number one offense in the country when it comes to yardage output. And Clemson's defense has been terribly disappointing compared to the expectation. I think Florida State's going to go in there and win that game tonight. Not saying it's going to be pretty, but I think FSU is going to win. and Han Clemson their seventh straight power for loss, which would be a program record or tied for a program record for them.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Dono, you talk about Death Valley. You talk about Florida State coming to town. How much you think those tickets should cost today? Oh, like $300. I mean, Florida is 33. You can, you get, I'm close enough and have enough money in my bank account that if I wanted to, I could go to a Clemson game and it'd be no, this game. $33.
Starting point is 00:08:00 Do you have to pay that or do they pay you $33 to go to the game? You know, Death Valley is looking a lot like a valley of lilies right now. It's looking a lot like the valley of milk and honey because everybody's happy and not having any serious problems here. This is a different type of environment than I've ever seen. And Clemson fans are checked out. They're checked out. Let's be very honest about this. Donno, you've seen the last couple of homes.
Starting point is 00:08:29 home crowds that they've had. Have they produced the home crowd in the past two to three games in July 8? It's still Death Valley now. Not once. Not once. So I think Florida State does get it done here. And here's the biggest reason why I think Florida State gets it done. Running game, run defense.
Starting point is 00:08:46 I think that's it. I think that's it. I think they're going to run all over them. When you look at those two factors for both teams, Florida State has not been good at a lot of things all year. One thing that they've been better at than Clemson, stopping a run. Stopping a run.
Starting point is 00:09:01 So the team that stops that run better is going to end up with the upper hand here. And I think despite the fact that Clemson, again, man for man, it doesn't make sense. Man for man, the talent is not there for Clemson to be bad here. Florida State is still somehow one of the best defenses in the conference in terms of not only stopping the run, but not allowing points, period. I will say this. Clemson, their secondary has been their biggest problem. So if they can find a way to stop the run,
Starting point is 00:09:37 Clemson is going to win this ballgame. I just think that's a tall task. I think that's a tall one. Now, okay, it's also an interesting situation for both coaches because I think the seat is warm for both. I would say warm to borderline hot for Mike Norvell, except it's a massive, massive buyout, which complicates the situation.
Starting point is 00:09:59 situation. In terms of Dabo Sweeney, what complicates the situation is all of the equity that he's built up. Like, you could say that what his team has done this year. And again, if they lose tonight, they dropped to two and five. And it would take a miracle to even be bowl eligible the rest of the way. Like, it's been really bad. And normal situation for a program with a standard as high as Clemson, if you produce those results, you're on the hot seat or you get fired. but it's very complicated with Dabo because Clemson football would not be what it is, if not for Dabo Sweeney. Like he built that program.
Starting point is 00:10:36 He built the current standard that he is now falling short of. But I think what's going to happen in the offseason for Dabo is, again, like I just, I don't feel like Clemson could fire him just based on all that he's accomplished there. But I do think they're going to start putting a lot of pressure on Dabo to embrace 2025, 2026 era of college football and two become more active in the portal. Let us become more active in NIL because I feel like the money is there for them. They just choose not to use it the way that other programs use it. Like I think there's going to be a come to Jesus type of meeting between the powers that be
Starting point is 00:11:14 and Dabo to really try to pressure him into evolving into that modern era. And if he doesn't want to do that, then I don't know. Maybe if it gets really ugly, he might decide to step away or something. I'm not expecting that to happen because he loved. he loves Clemson, but I think there's going to have to be a shift in culture for Davo Sweeney for Clemson to be comfortable with him moving that program forward. I think where we're at with Daibo and Clemson is here. I think he gets one more year to be traditional down.
Starting point is 00:11:46 It's one thing to talk about Clemson in terms of Clemson Down, because Clemson Down is still competing for conference championship. You know, Davo has that program role at that level to where that's the expectation that's your down year. This is a true down year. This is a truly things are starting to kind of bottom out type of year. I think they give him one more year like this. I think he can rock out with one more year like this. But the problem is he's suffering from success. Because when you show people it's possible to win at a place, then they expect you to win at the place. Right. Yeah, sure. You become a victim of your own success. Exactly. And I know we got to go to break here, but I'm going to use my high school as a perfect example. We had never won Jack Squat, rarely ever a city championship before my class came through. And then we won two back-to-back state championships. Now all of a sudden, the bar goes from like, man, are they going to win the city championship this year?
Starting point is 00:12:46 Hey, if you're not winning states, what are you doing? We went three years without a state championship. And people acted like our head coach had lost his touch and he needs to go away. And we're like, wait a minute, wait a minute, dude. This is the guy that like never in history of the city of Detroit had we seen this. And now he needs to step away because we're three years removed. But once you win it, it becomes the expectation that time in, time out, time in, time again, we need that. And that's where Dabo is.
Starting point is 00:13:17 So, you know, I hope for the sake of the conference that he figures it out and gets it together. But I'm going to tell you, Clemson may be reminded in a year or two how tough that place. is to win consistently at. Yeah, no doubt. Well, we got a lot of other games to talk about when we come back. Miami in action against Syracuse. You've got multiple teams with either one or zero conference losses in action today. So the ACC championship picture, as we know, you expect chaos in the ACC. Will chaos reign supreme again?
Starting point is 00:13:50 We're only getting started. You want to keep it locked right here on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC. The weekend is finally here. and it's time to look back and crown this week's MVP on who delivered, powered by DoorDash. Just like you can win every Saturday with DoorDash streaks, saving more every time you order. These players delivered when it mattered most. Let's break it down. I think the only person who's on almost as big of a Saturday streak as DoorDash is Pit starting quarterback Mason Heinzsche. He started five games since taking over for Eli Holstein.
Starting point is 00:14:22 He has not lost, and he's thrown for over 300 yards in four of those five games. didn't have to do it against Syracuse, and he's thrown for over 400 yards in one of those occasions. Freshman quarterback Mason Heinzschel is absolutely on a streak. When the game, when the pressure is on the line and the game is on the line, Heinzsche comes through, no hesitation, no delay. And if you've been watching week after week, you know that these performances are not a fluke. He's on a streak.
Starting point is 00:14:49 And just like Heinzschel delivers for the Pitt Panthers, DoorDash delivers your Saturdays. With DoorDash streaks, you save every time you order. Stack it up all season and you could save up to $250, including $100 in DoorDash credits. Order this Saturday. Keep the streak alive. Fuel your game day only with DoorDash. And make sure you check out Kenton and Grayson Boone on Lockdown Wolfpack and check me out on Locked on Cains. Speaking of the Cains, Kenton, you know, Syracuse is who Miami hosts today at 3.30 p.m. at Hard Rock Stadium. The vibes are very down in South Florida right now.
Starting point is 00:16:32 I talk about Miami football every single day, and I know the vibe of the community. If there ever was an opportunity for a get-right game, Syracuse is that opportunity. You know, this tea, I talked about Pitt being on a five-game winning streak. Syracuse is going the exact opposite direction. Five-game losing streak. You know, in the case of Pitt,
Starting point is 00:16:54 they made a quarterback change that elevated their team. team. Syracuse was forced to make a quarterback change when Steve Angelly tore his Achilles, and the team has, you know, spiraled down the toilet ever since. A note for Syracuse today that I think should be a sigh of relief for Orange fans, they're not going with the lacrosse player this week at quarterback. It was, you call it an experiment, whatever it was last week, to start walk-on freshman lacrosse player, Joe Filarty at quarterback, who threw for 39 yards and four completions against North Carolina. They have benched Filardi, and they're going back to Ricky Collins, who's also been
Starting point is 00:17:33 terrible, Kenton, but at least Ricky Collins is a quarterback, kind of. You know, when you throw for less yards than Dono has years alive on this earth. Yeah. That may be time. That may be time, though. Hey, let's regroup, right? Let's be considered this. Also, call them the slumpbuster.
Starting point is 00:17:51 It's crazy. Whatever you do, don't look that up on Urban Dictionary, folks. Now, with that in my. mind. You know, this is a Miami team that Mario Cristobal just needs a little more talent. I know, that's all. You know, they're not the most talented team. And he's had to restock the shelves, of course. But no, in all seriousness, in this game, they're going to dominate and they should. Right. They should. The question is this, how quickly do they work over that tenseness? Because there's going to be a lot of tension there. There's going to be a lot of guys pressing and
Starting point is 00:18:21 I want to be perfect and that got to be, everything has to be right. This is a team just going out there and play, dude. Just go out there and play. At the end of the day, you cannot control everything else. Just go out there and play. And in all seriousness, when I look at Christobal and say, what can you do in this one? Don't take your foot off their neck. Shane Dawson, don't take your foot off. This needs to be a moment where you say, we know we're going to get up early. It's not about that. It's about how we conduct ourselves, how we show discipline, how we handle ourselves going down the stretch. And also for this Miami team, like you said, this is about busting the slump per se, but it's also about saying, who do we want to be for the rest of the year?
Starting point is 00:19:06 Let's say, by some off chance, you do get to the ACC championship. Will you win with 12 penalties, giving away 100 yards? Probably not. Probably not. Will you win throwing four interceptions? Probably not. So this game needs to be. we need to execute at a championship level, even when our opponent, we know they're not going to a bowl this year. We know those gentlemen are going back up to a cold, lonely night in New York where everything's a little bit worse because they continue to lose. Fran Brown ain't showered in darn near two months at this point.
Starting point is 00:19:44 I know that house has got to be fumigated by the time they get another win at the start the next season. So this is a game that Miami needs to say, it's not about the scoreboard. It's about us. It's about who we are from start to finish. Yeah. Right. I mean, you have to clean up. You mentioned the penalties. You know, they had 12 penalties and lost to SMU. Nine penalties for about a football field's worth of yards in the loss against Louisville. That's one of the common threads that Miami's had in their losses. A lack of offensive execution. And just the approach, I mean, you talk about don't take your foot off the neck. You know, Miami has kept, has kept less talented opponents in games by shortening the game by, playing like you're trying to run out the clock from the first quarter on, you're in a situation now where you don't control your own destiny anymore. Like even if you win out, you're going to need help to get into the college football playoff and a lot of help to get into the ACC championship game.
Starting point is 00:20:39 So style points mean something. I know style points, style points don't get you to the ACC championship game, but they could get you into the college football playoffs. So you no longer have the luxury of showing sympathy to your opponents by running out the clock. This is Cobra Kai style. It's no mercy coming up tonight. And again, 3.30, I shouldn't say tonight this afternoon. And, you know, Miami's going to have some injuries in this game.
Starting point is 00:21:04 Receiver, C.J. Daniels is going to be out for the second consecutive week. So Jojo Trader is going to need to step up. Of course, Malachi, Tony will and should have a heavy workload. He's been Miami's top playmaker. Mark Fletcher is going to miss this game. So Marty Brown and Jordan Lyle are going to have to step up in the rushing attack. But again, this is the type of game where, you know, Syracuse is a hundred-twenty-third nationally against the run, and their defense is in the hundreds in pretty much every category.
Starting point is 00:21:32 You shouldn't need Mark Fletcher or C.J. Daniels or Tony Johnson and other receivers out. Like, you shouldn't need these guys to win this game. You should still be able to go out there and take care of your business. Miami's a 28.5 point favorite. It's a big number, but I think the number has as much to do with how Syracuse is perceived as it does with how Miami is perceived. So I think there's that. So we'll see at 3.30 p.m. All right.
Starting point is 00:22:00 So Kent, we got a handful of teams that are in, like, legitimately in the ACC championship picture that are in action today. 15th rank Louisville is hosting Cal at 7 o'clock. Louisville's favored by 17 and a half points. If they keep winning, they could end up in the ACC championship game. They're four and one in conference. you know, Duke. Duke is in action today against Yukon, but it's a non-conference game, so it doesn't count for the ACCS.MU has just one conference loss, so they're in it.
Starting point is 00:22:31 They play a bad Boston college team on the road. They're favored by 10 and a half points. And Virginia, who's 5 and 0 in the ACC, they host Wake Forest tonight as six and a half point favorites. I've got my eyes on that one. But out of those games, like which of those teams that are either one loss or zero losses in conference, do you think have the best chance of getting upset today? I think it's Virginia. Louisville, watch out. Louisville, watch out.
Starting point is 00:23:01 If JKS and the boys get hot, you could be looking at a serious problem. And plus, Cal is so enigmatic. One game, you sit there and say, so what do y'all do during the week? What do we go over during the week? What's happening here? And then the next game, you're looking at them like, hmm, they could, they could throw, they could throw something in the punch bowl to ruin it for whoever's party they're going to. They could do it.
Starting point is 00:23:28 They could do it. And Louisville still has to have their game where they look like they forgot to play football. It happens every year and they haven't had it yet. Even at Lost of Virginia, they didn't quite have it. Well, because does it because Louisville has that same thing that, you know, the Georgia Tech has in their DNA where it's like they get up for the big games. and then they have the lapses in the lesser games. Like that's that same, which is basically describes the entire ACC, but they definitely have that in their DNA.
Starting point is 00:23:58 Yeah, yeah. So Louisville, watch out. Y'all got a shot. You got a shot. And not only a shot to get back to the ACC championship, this is their shot to win one. This is your shot. Brom, you know, he's been good.
Starting point is 00:24:12 He's done a great job there. He's been fantastic, actually. He's been fantastic. He's taking you to an ACC championship. He's gotten your right to the doorstep. Now it's time to kick that door down. But it starts with a game like this. Or not it starts with a game like this,
Starting point is 00:24:26 but a game like this is indicative of whether or not you have the countenance and the temperament to get there and do it. Because if they lose this game, I highly doubt that they end up in the ACC championship. It's going to be a tough task. So I'd say Louisville, watch out for Cal now. Watch out. Cousin Cal is coming. The Calgary rhythm ain't never resting easy. I would love to hear the Calgary rhythm get loud and get rowdy
Starting point is 00:24:47 after that one. It would just be just for the chaos factor. All right. So the other the other games and the most of these games have some sort of an implication, right? Although the one that we let off with Florida State against Clemson is probably the least meaningful out of all the games today. And how ironic is it, Kenton, that, you know, two universities who, you know, sued the ACC over there, like brands not being valued enough are at a point where they're both out of contention and they're playing tonight on a network that does not subscribe to Nielsen ratings, which is very ironic. You know, we had, we met Jim Phillips, or rather, I met Jim Phillips at the Duke's Mail kickoff
Starting point is 00:25:32 a couple years ago when the lawsuits first popped off. And he said to me, and I quote, I don't know why Florida State is doing this, because even if they were winless in conference, we'd still pay them out every penny due. and lo and behold, we are a couple years later, and Florida State had a year where they went darn near windless and cars. And now they're having another year where winds have been sparse. They've gotten a couple, but they've been few and far between.
Starting point is 00:26:01 So it is very ironic that that's happening, but I'm going to tell you, this is a situation where at this point in the season, every game's going to have implications, Donald. Every game is going to have implications. If Boston College can somehow find a way to pull off that upset, you're upset in Apple Carver with SMU. If Syracuse can find a way to beat Miami, all of a sudden, everything's off the table for Miami. Oh, my gosh, yeah. Dude, my head might explode.
Starting point is 00:26:27 Like, if Syracuse beats Miami tonight, I'm not talking about beating the spread. I'm talking about winning the game. Yeah. My head will explode on a live episode of Locked on Cains after the game. You know, I wouldn't blame you for it. I would not blame you for it. And then, of course, you've got. the rest of the Saturday slate here with Wake Forest playing up against Virginia.
Starting point is 00:26:48 You said Virginia is the team to watch out for an upset. Wake Forest has quietly, sneakily, had a much better season than anybody could have predicted. They have. They're what, five and three now or something along those lines? Five and three. Yeah. They've been good. When they've looked bad, they've looked terrible, but they have, they've had many a moment
Starting point is 00:27:06 where you looked up like, wait, wait, White Forest won this week, really? Good for them. They beat SMU a couple weeks ago. and then Miami couldn't beat SMU. Exactly. There's a lot going on here. And of course, Cal and Louisville, same type of deal. So there's a lot going on here.
Starting point is 00:27:21 There's a lot at stake for most of these games. There's only one team that has a lot of stake going on. But even still, if you are that team, you have to not let the lesser team upset the apple cart. Keep the apple cart rolling the way it should. Well, and I will remind folks, even though, so Pitt, Pitt is off today. They've got a buy week. but Pitt, Pitt holds, holds like all the cards when it comes to the CFP because they, Pitt still has their own opportunity being one loss in conference.
Starting point is 00:27:52 They're still in the ACC championship hunt. And if they win that, they're in the college football playoff. But they also, they still have Notre Dame and Miami on their schedule. So like Pitt could get themselves into the CFP and they could also eliminate one or both Miami and Notre Dame from CFC. Fee contention. So they've got like their, they're Thanos with like three infinity stones right now is what Pitt is. Like they can elevate their own season and they can wreck a couple of others. Yeah, you're absolutely right. And I'll tell you this much.
Starting point is 00:28:26 Pitt, I talk about them all the time as a team that shows the best of times and the worst of times. Have they not done that this season already? Have they not shown you? Yeah, we took Eli Holstein and darn near renamed the freshman of the week after him. Guess what? We got another one. We're like, you know, we're tired. He's a sophomore. He's old news. Let's find another freshman. They're like Leonardo DiCaprio when the girlfriend turns 27.
Starting point is 00:28:50 Get this old bag of bones out of here. Get this sophomore old bag of bones out of here. I need me a new quarterback immediately. But it does have a ton of good football ahead of them, potentially, potential. Because we've seen, you know, I'm a big fan of their offensive coordinator, Bell. I think that he finds matchups. He gets guys in his face, isolates. one-on-one matchups all around the field and finds ways to do great things there at a very high clip.
Starting point is 00:29:18 With that being said, can that defense hold up? Can they do what they need to do with some of the injuries that they've had on that side of the ball to maintain what they should be? And, of course, a freshman going to make freshman mistakes. So can you protect him enough? Can Desmond Reed be good enough and healthy enough to keep them where they need to be? So there's a lot of football, meaningful football left in ACC. despite the best protestations of the college football playoff committee. Oh, yeah, the playoff committee, they're begging for some of these teams to lose again.
Starting point is 00:29:50 So they can, they only want to give one. And they're kind of have to give a bid to the ACC to whoever wins the conference championship. But that's the only bid they want to give. We appreciate everybody for joining us here live on this game day episode of Lockdown, ACC. Make sure you smash that like button.
