But this summer, Fanduel is hooking up all customers with a booster of bonus daily.
That's right.
There's something for everyone every day all summer long.
Visit Fandual.com to get started.
On this episode, we will identify the.
most overconfident fan base in the ACC, and it's not who you think.
It's a shocker to me.
We'll talk about which defensive players deserve more love because this Maxwell
watch list is all offensive players.
We'll read some of the comments that we got yesterday for talking about the reasons why
ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips has to fight during all this legal turmoil with Florida
State and with Clemson.
But first, Kenton, I wasn't expecting this.
And not that, listen, preseason watch list, it is what it is.
Truth will be told on the football field this year.
But the Maxwell Award has released their 80 player watch list.
And you would have probably thought, A, the majority of the players will be SEC and Big Ten.
The ACC actually leads the country with 20 players on the Maxwell preseason list,
followed by the SEC and the Big 12 at 15 apiece,
and the Big 10 only with 12 guys,
and 25% of those are on the Ohio State Buckeyes,
because Ohio State has three nominees.
But first of all, Kenton, are you surprised?
I mean, again, Commissioner Phillips,
even you and I laughed at him a little bit
when he talked about how exciting the conference is,
but the ACC's got five more Maxwell watch list than anybody else.
Yeah, honestly, I am a little bit surprised
because they're, when you think about the players that are named on this watch list,
I don't see one where I'm like, ah, there's the old photo of like all the military guys
and the one guy in the clown suit.
They're with them.
It's not that type of situation.
And then it makes you think for a second, wait a minute, have I been warped by the public
perception of this thing?
Because again, these are all phenomenal players.
I don't know a single player on this list that if you said, hey, this player could win the Davey O'Brien,
the Bolindic, the Doe, the Doe,
at the end of the year, I'd say no way.
There's not a snowball chance.
All of them fit and belong on this list.
So I look at that and say, hey, these guys are phenomenal.
These guys could be, you know, all those types of things in terms of postseason accolades
and awards.
So, I mean, Jimmy P. might have been on to something.
They might have been on with something.
Now, the reality to win the Maxwell, which basically has the same criteria as the
Heisman, it's just not, you know, doesn't get as hyped as the Heisman trophy.
obviously if you're going to win the Maxwell Award, it helps to be a quarterback.
Not every year, but usually eight out of the last 10 Maxwell winners have been quarterbacks.
It also helps if your team is really good and wins, you know, 9, 10, 11, 12 games.
The award is given out before the national championship, but to be a national title contender will also help your cause.
So let's go through the 20 ACC players nominated and talk about the ones.
And all good players, like you mentioned, some of them have.
a legit shot. Others will not have a legit shot because of the teams that they play for.
You got Thomas Castellanos from Boston College, absolutely electric quarterback.
Jaden Ott from Cal, who's one of the top running backs in the country,
Cade Clubnick from Clemson, Phil Maffa from Clemson, the running back.
I almost feel like Mafa should probably have a better chance to win it than Clubnik,
if we're being honest here.
Jordan Moore, wide receiver from Duke, DJ Oiunga Lai, quarterback at Florida State.
You got the Haynes crew from Georgia Tech, Haynes King, their quarterback, Jamal Haynes,
they're running back both on there.
By the way, Florida State only has the one nominee, which is surprising.
Louisville just has one nominee that's quarterback Tyler Shuck.
Miami's got three.
Miami leads the conference, which again goes to show you how I hope Miami can live up to the hype
because there's a lot of it.
Only Ohio State has as many Maxwell watch list players as Miami.
So Miami has got Damien Martinez transfer running.
back, Xavier Restrepo, senior wide receiver, Cam Ward, transfer quarterback.
NC State just has one.
That's Grayson McCall, the quarterback.
North Carolina has one.
That's Amari and Hampton Star running back.
That dude's got a legit shot if North Carolina has a good season this year.
Preston Stone, the quarterback from SMU.
Elyke Iommander, the wide receiver from Stanford, who I'm a huge fan of.
Kyle McCord, the quarterback from Syracuse, transferred from Ohio State.
Allen, junior running back from Syracuse,
Chiron Drones, quarterback from Virginia Tech, absolutely electric player,
and Bayshul Tutin running back from Virginia Tech also on that list.
So who do you feel like are the most legitimate contenders there, Kenton?
I mean, ooh, that's such a loaded question.
It's tough because there are so many that are legitimate contenders here.
But I would say, you know, obviously the guys,
the suspects at the top of the list in terms of guys who are predicted
to be on championship or near championship teams in terms of the three-headed monster in Restrepo, Ward, Martinez,
you know, it's very likely.
It's very likely that one of those guys ends up in New York at that podium.
Wait, I don't think that that ceremony is in New York.
I don't think so.
I can tell you the date that they give it out because I looked it up today, December 12th.
I can't tell you where they're giving it out, though.
Well, wherever they are, these guys have an opportunity.
to be called somewhere December 12 because again, like you said,
it's often a combination of your team being good and you being very good.
And those three guys, I think, are going to have to carry a massive part of load for
Miami if they're going to get to where they want to go this year.
And then you look around the conference to say, man, it's really so tough because there
are so many guys that you would say their team could be good enough, they could be there.
Phil Malfa is a prime example.
But you said, hey, I would be less surprised with Phil Moffin and Kay Clefman.
Phil Moff is an absolute load to bring down.
And now that he's going to get the lion's share of the carries,
it'll be interesting to see how he holds up as, you know, objectively speaking,
a guy that big, he starts to wear on you.
He starts to lean on you.
In the beginning of the game, you might have started stopping him for no game
when you meet him at the line of scrimmage.
And then toward the end, it might end up being three, four-yarders.
might end up being, oh, he ran over you.
It's Katie Died's at the doorstep.
So, you know, these guys, there are plenty of guys on this list that are super special,
that are absolutely amazing.
And I do retract my former statement that there are no clowns on this list,
because there are absolutely some.
But there are more guys who are, who I absolutely see as a legitimate contender here.
Yeah, if I can throw out like four or five names that I think are legit contenders,
obviously, as mentioned, just the past award winners would tell you more than likely,
quarterbacks will have the best shot in the last 10 years. Only two non-quarterbacks have won.
A couple of Alabama players, Devante Smith, who also won the Heisman, Derek Henry, nine years ago.
Otherwise, it's been eight quarterbacks. The ACC actually has only had one winner in the last 10 years.
That's Lamar Jackson. So hopefully they can break that skid. They got more ping pong balls in the lottery machine this year in terms of the watch list.
But, you know, I know that I'm maybe not the biggest fan of DJ.
Weunga Lale, but I do think Florida State's going to be really good this year.
And if you're, you know, the quarterback of a team that could possibly win the ACC championship again,
I could see DJ absolutely in that mix.
And apparently he's practicing really well since Florida State.
They've already opened up training camp since they start the season a week earlier than most other teams.
So I could definitely, I would not rule out DJ Weonga Lale.
I definitely would not rule out Cam Ward, you know, if Miami could have the good season that a lot of people expect that they
can this year. I'm not, I wouldn't completely rule out Clubnik, like for the same reason
as DJ. Like if you're, if you're the quarterback of a team that's contending for a college football
playoff spot, an ACC championship, you could be in that mix. I'm not, I'm not sleeping on
Grayson McCall and I'm not sleeping on Kyron drones from Virginia Tech, especially since drones.
He's such a dual threat, Kenton, that even if the Hokies don't have like a 10-win type season,
drones might just put up such ridiculous numbers
that he can be that exception to the rule
where it's like, okay, maybe his team only won,
eight games,
but this guy's putting up video game numbers,
so we've got to put him in the mix.
Yeah, Karan drones has it all as a quarterback,
a massive arm,
a, you know, legs that just don't quit.
That guy, he can get it to you,
he can get it done by looting you,
by running over you.
But here's the biggest thing that he has working for him
that a lot of these other guys do not.
Chemistry and returner.
You do not have to worry about, oh, yeah, me and Byshaw Tudin had to work out what our zone refill would be in three months.
No, you all were together for years.
Oh, yeah, I need to work with my outside receivers on what the jump ball and what the back shoulder ball looks like.
Because we just, no, no, no, these guys were all there last year.
The whole gang is coming back in essence.
And so you have a situation of continuity unlike what most of the conference is seen.
A lot of other guys on this list, they don't have.
that benefit of, hey, me and these guys played together for an extensive amount of time.
DJU falls in that category.
Ward, Martinez, falling in that category.
And de facto, restrepo as well because of how that works out for him.
McCall falls into that category.
You know, there's plenty of situations where you look at this and say he has something
that nobody else except maybe Preston Stone has.
That's it.
He's the only other guy that has a ton of continuity coming back.
and I guess Phil Moff and Kay Clubnick as well,
but again, you look at that propensity to make bad decisions.
I know Clemson fans get on me every time I say Tyler Brown is not a game breaker.
But I mean that.
I think he's a good receiver.
I don't think he's a game breaker.
Now, Williams, I think he's that kid.
If he can stay healthy, I think that is a game breaker.
He will make something happen that completely shifts the narrative of the season if he is healthy throughout it.
I don't think that's a situation for Brown.
but they do return him and Brenningstool.
So, you know, Cade's got some weapons himself in terms of getting things done.
But again, Kyron drones, I think in terms of all of the returning quarterbacks,
I think he's the cream of the crop.
You know, when we come back, I want to give some love to defensive players
who should get a more, get a little more recognition,
because it's all about the offense when you talk about preseason awards
that aren't defensive specific.
Plus, going through some of you guys is awesome,
but sometimes very angry YouTube comments.
comments yesterday. I noticed at least 90% of the people who commented on our Jim Phillips
conversation yesterday are not big fans of the ACC commissioner. We'll get to that and so much more.

So make those your second and third listens here today.
So Kenton, defensive players just don't get the preseason love that the offensive guys do.
I'm a huge nerd for pass rushers.
So I think about players.
like Ashton Jalati from Louisville.
I think about Ruben Bain at Miami.
I think Marvin Jones, who transferred to Florida State,
could have a really good year coming up.
There needs to be more preseason love for these defensive guys
because you could have a few double-digit sackers this year in the ACC
who may turn some heads for these Maxwell lists.
I'll tell you what, in terms of this group of pass rushers,
you're seeing something really special in the ACC right now.
because there is a heap of guys who can all get it done at multiple positions as well.
That position versatility is what makes some of these guys so dangerous.
Ashton Jalati is a guy that he is lined up, up and down the line of scrimmings.
They find your weakest guy and they say, hey, nine, go get them, boss.
And he does it every single time.
He is a guy that is just relentless.
His technique is getting better and better by the year.
Ruben Bain.
I don't think people understand when you talk about Ruben Bain, they think you're a Miami guy.
That young man has everything that you would want out of a true speed edge rusher.
He has a get-off that is like Michael Johnson's shot out of starter box.
He covers so much ground with that first step.
It makes tackles uncomfortable.
And then he's powerful enough to convert that speed into jack and the tackle up.
I mean, what a guy.
Daven Van is another guy that has that Ashton Jalati like, you know,
kind of versatility where he'll line up at the nose in some third and long pass
or six situations.
He gets it done from a three technique, four eye, wherever you put him at,
he's going to get it done.
Kamen Rucker, he is a guy who, you know, he gets it done off the edge
and the defense that was underwhelming to say the least.
He was a bright spot in it.
And so you look at these guys and you say, man,
the defense needs more love, especially the pass rushing, but I'll tell you what, the ACC's
defensive backs are probably one of the most disrespectful groups in the country.
In the country, you've got Fentrell Cyprus, who is special, whichever way you want him to do it.
Zone, man, it doesn't matter, he can get it done.
You've got Aiden White who's going, like, you know, the people from rent need to come in because
it's been 525,600 minutes since he's allowed a touchdown.
young man is just a clamp machine.
Of course, you cannot forget Dorian Strong up there in Blacksburg,
who I think is probably the best athlete,
like the best pure athlete out of all the corners that we have in the conference.
You've got so many guys in this conference that can play an elite level.
And Clems's young BBs came on very strong as a lay.
People talk about, oh, you got to pay attention to Cade and how he came on late.
No, look at those deep E v.
Avion, Terrell, and company,
They got better as the year went on, what you expect from young guys,
but they look like they were turning into something special by the end of the year.
And so you're looking around the conference and you're saying to yourself,
is there no defensive player who belongs on this list?
I think not.
I think not.
However, you know what the national perception is, right?
You know, defense wins games, but the offense sells the teams.
Offense gets the eyeballs on the game and all that good stuff.
So, of course, these are going to be the guys that litter the award list.
I want to give the floor now to our locked on ACC listeners and viewers because Kenton,
I was going through this morning.
I was going through our YouTube comments.
Now, yesterday we discussed the reasons why ACC commissioner Jim Phillips, you know, he talked
last week about how he's going to fight for as long as it takes during these legal disputes
with Florida State and Clemson.
And we talked about the reasons why he's got no choice but to do that, how we were both
we're a little bit surprised by just how animated and defiant Jim Phillips is because he's usually
kind of soft-spoken and quite frankly kind of boring. He was not boring last week.
We got some comments mostly from Florida State fans who I know are very passionate about
the things going on in the ACC. First comment, Kenton, Jim Phillips is a clown. He's fighting
for the conference, but he didn't fight for Florida State when the snub happened. Now, let me say
this before I give you the floor. I did think that when that playoff snub happened, I thought the
ACC should have been more publicly supportive of Florida State. I thought they should have
made more of a statement made more of a stink about it. I thought they should have shown more solidarity
for a member of their conference. So to an extent, I can agree that the ACC, at least PR-wise,
should have done more. But in terms of like, when you say he should have fought for Florida State there,
I don't know if that person is talking about more than PR
because like should they have sued the college football playoff committee.
I know Florida State fans just think if you ever get wrong,
you should sue that.
That's just what we do down here.
I don't know if that was a realistic option or not,
but I definitely think something more should have been at least said,
if not done about that situation because Florida State,
we both agree, got wronged last year.
Yeah, and I agree with a large part of this conversation and this comment.
I, you know, the Jim Phillips is a clown part, not so much, but the, he should have fought harder for Florida State.
Absolutely.
There should have been banging on tables.
You should have been on everybody's show.
They shouldn't have been able to keep you off the show.
You should have been everywhere screaming.
We were done wrong.
The conference was done wrong, but also beyond Jim Phillips.
I said this last year.
I said the entire conference needs to ban together to support Florida State right now.
I get it.
We're not like the SEC and Big Ten where it's like, if you're not our rival, we're going to love you and root for you because you're in the same conference.
I understand that.
But that should have been the vibe.
Why should that have been the vibe?
Because if you let one team in your conference get screwed over, how far is it from happening to you?
Right.
Just very basic, even if we're talking the most self-serving way possible, if you let folks get away with it.
It's the same thing I tell Notre Dame fans when they're like, oh, J.O.K.
Rocket Watts didn't steal Peyton Wilson's trophies.
I always say the same thing.
Do you not believe that there will be a Notre Dame player who's deserving of an award going forward?
Because if you do, you should be against haphazardly throwing around awards because a brand,
because a brand is bigger than the player was in the same stratosphere.
Which, by the way, J.O.K. wasn't in terms of the player that he was compared to Peyton Wilson.
But again, a lot of people are so short-sighted.
They're like, ah, ha ha, this team that I don't particularly care for is being wounded.
Ah, ha, ha, my guy won an award, so I'm happy.
And it's like, no, it shouldn't be like that.
So this is the only comment that I give some credence and agreement, too.
Because again, if I'm Jim Phillips and you keep out my undefeated chap,
I'm banging on every table loudly.
I'm going full.
I can't remember what I believe was Fisdale was the coach of the Grizzlies
when one player shot more free throws his entire team.
And he slapped the table and said,
now take that for data.
That's what I would have did for Florida State.
I would have bought up every piece of data that showed Florida State belong.
I would have bought up every piece of data that said,
wait a minute, didn't Bamalus at home this season?
Didn't that happen?
Didn't they need a fourth and 30-something Hail Mary to survive an Auburn team
that just got drugged by New Mexico State at home?
With all due respect to the Aggies,
you needed a hell Mary to be the team that lost to them?
you know, he didn't do that.
And that's why I agree with this comment in part.
Yeah, and I agree with you because, like, on the one hand,
I don't think there's anything Jim Phillips could have done to force Florida State
into the playoff last year after they already announced it because, you know,
the playoff committee, they technically did not violate their bylaws and they technically
didn't do anything that's against their own criteria.
But then at the same time, it's like people always wonder,
like why, why do coaches speak out against bad calls after games?
It's not because, like they know they can't change what just happened, but if you make noise,
you can, you can force change in the future, that if you complain about calls,
you may start getting those calls down the road.
So I thought, you know, I think the solidarity would have been important to show your unified
league, to stand up for your, your member that got snubbed.
But then I also think if you make enough noise, maybe a snub like that doesn't happen.
And just because they're going to 12 teams now,
mean snubs can't happen because we could see situations, Kenton, where when you're talking
about the seven at-large bids, if, you know, four of those go to the Big Ten and three of those
go to the SEC, where's our at-large bids with the ACC? Then your snubs can still happen,
just happen in a different way. Yeah. Go ahead. No, no, I was just going to say this,
the only difference is the snubs are a lot harder to justify or care about when it's a 12-seat
than when it's a four seed.
But you're absolutely right.
Snubs are inevitable in a playoff system.
Yeah, another comment is why isn't Jim Phillips, quote-unquote,
fighting for a new TV contract?
I'll be frank.
I don't think Kent and the ACC has a whole lot of leverage to fight for a new,
like at least not a better.
I mean, I'm sure you could fight for a new TV contract,
maybe not better than the one you have.
He's definitely fighting for revenue from other areas.
I don't think there's anything you can do about the TV contract right now.
I know that many fans in the ACC may not be used to this.
When you sign certain types of contracts, you're kind of stuck to honoring it.
Right.
Even if.
Rights, for example, yeah.
Even if it's not the most favorable for you, when you sign a contract, you agree to a deal.
And let me ask this, because I'm all for criticizing Jim Phillips.
I don't believe that any human being, not myself, not Dono, not any elected official, not any coach, not any player is above reproach or critique as a whole.
But let me ask you this.
Since when did your mark fight for a new TV deal with what, seven, I'm sorry, it runs through 2035 with 11 years left on his deal?
When was Sankey fighting for new deals for the SEC with 10 years left on their deal?
When would Petiti do such a thing?
So what do you want the man to do?
Go to ESPN and say, hey, I understand that we just signed a contract.
We just read up.
But you know what?
Damn it, we want to re-up again.
Bring us the re-up button because we're going to mash it.
We need to read.
That's not how real life works.

Kenton, I didn't have this on my bingo card on Monday night.
I'm going through the old X app, and I see this post from Lawrence Ross, a Cal fan, who says,
I've watched every ACC team.
and no one, including FSU, scares me as a Cal fan.
It feels like a league of Arizona and Arizona states.
Wow.
Sounds to me, Kenton, like Cal is going to go 8-0, 20,000-plus travel miles be damned.
They're going 8-0 in the ACC this year, and they're beating all these East Coast,
Arizona and Arizona states.
I did not have Cal fans being the most confident on my bingo card today.
only a few problems here.
There's only a few minor problems here.
You know, Cal seeing a bunch of a league full of Arizona's.
I want to talk about that for a second.
Arizona, they won that game last year, Donno.
They beat them.
They beat on Arizona.
They beat Noah Fifta and that receiver they got up there,
the specials big time, big fella.
They beat them.
You want to know what their record is in the last 10 against Arizona?
I mean, I would assume they're 10 and O and their last 10 against Arizona.
They make it sound so easy.
Three and seven, including a six game losing streak leading up to this last game.
Not good.
Maybe I wouldn't reference a league full of the team that has pushed my face in time after time and I finally get a one up.
Maybe that's just me, Donald.
That's just me.
Their last three meetings with Arizona State, similar situations.
situation. One in three in those last three. They won their last one. But before that,
eish, things got a little hairy. So what am I saying here? That's a little delusion. Number two,
that young man is clearly a member of Alpha Phi Alpha. It's a Devine non-faternity and whatnot.
And they claim themselves to be ice cold. When you know what happens when you have too much ice going on,
you get hypothermia. And you know one of the symptoms of hypothermia, delirium. You start seeing things.
You start believing things that are not true.
Okay.
Mr. Ross, seek help.
Get off.
Leave that dope alone.
It's not good for your mind, brother.
You got to get off that stuff.
Okay, you saw Mr. Clark and lean on me when he told him.
Go ahead and jump off the building.
That's what you're doing.
Leave that dope alone.
Okay.
Stop it.
We want our fans.
We want our ACC fans to be happy and healthy.
And you can't be that way if that monkey is on your back.
if you know what I mean, okay?
So, you know, having Cal fans be this confident despite the travel,
despite the fact that they were, hey, in the, in the PAC 12 last year,
it's interesting to see.
It's an interesting thing.
Hey, Cal, y'all, y'all know I love y'all.
You know I love some Jay Knott.
But I'll tell you, fans like him do not give you a good rap.
And by the way, I want to, Miami's traveling out to Cal this year.
So that's a game where they don't have to, Cal doesn't have to fly across the country.
I do want to go out there for that game because I've heard, I've only been to,
I've never been to that part of California.
I've only been to Southern California.
I've heard really good things.
I'm happy to have them in the ACC.
And if they do run the table this year, then hey, maybe Mr. Ross, the ice cold man,
maybe we owe him an apology at the end of the year.
Let me tell you something.
If they run the table this year, anybody that bet on them to take it all,
They're going to get some ice cold bucks.
You understand?
They're going to be the ones who are laughing at everybody.
And I'm not above eating crow in this show, okay?
We are bringing back the, he said, and since we got two men on the podcast, we got,
he said, he said, the fan said going forward.
We are bringing it back tweaking the format slightly, but we are bringing that back.
So trust and believe pickums will not end.
And guys like Mr. Ross can make every pick he want.
for his cow bears.
I love it.
Well, we appreciate you guys, as always.
