You can start the season with a big return on Fanduil because new customers can place a $5 bet and you'll get started with $150 in bonus bets if you win that first $5 bet. Visit fanduel.com to get started. He is Kenton Gibbs from Locked on Wolfpack. I am Alex Dono from Locked on Caines. We'll talk weekend predictions for ACC football coming up, including a Thursday night game
Starting point is 00:00:57 where the fighting Kenton Gibbs's will be in action. We'll talk about Mack Brown and his future. I know this is one that's going to get Kenton a little excited to talk about. We'll talk top ACC quarterbacks. But Kenton, let's start out with the updated college football playoff rankings as of Tuesday. Miami at number 8, SMU 13, Clemson 17. That's your ACC representation. What stands out to you most about the updated CFP spreads?
Starting point is 00:01:28 I genuinely don't understand what other conferences are so upset for a multitude of reasons. If anything, the ACC should be the most pissed off conference by a mile. If you look at some of these teams and some of their losses and some of their best wins or whatever the case may be, whatever metric you choose to use, a lot of ACC teams need to be a lot higher. I don't understand how a team that lost to a bottom of the half or bottom half of the MAC team in Notre Dame is ranked at number six. And yet losing. to Georgia Tech drops you to eight. I don't understand that.
Starting point is 00:02:09 Even if the argument is, hey, they're a different team now, they're a better team now. They're also so different than Miami looks worse or whatever the case may be. The results on the field are still the results on the field. And then SMU, the SMU disrespect, absolutely insane.
Starting point is 00:02:28 And again, this is all I would ask anybody. And I'm very genuine, very serious about it. this. If you put SMU at 13 and Notre Dame is at what now, six? Six. I would ask based on what criteria. Whose loss came earlier, Notre Dame or SMU's. SMU's loss came earlier. Whose loss was to a better team? SMU or Notre Dame. Okay. Who's got the better wins since then, the more quality wins since then? SMU or Notre Dame?
Starting point is 00:03:05 SMU? Okay. So I don't understand where we get this idea that, hey, that makes sense. And it's not just about Notre Dame because there are multiple teams in here that I'm like, I don't get it. What more can these teams do? What more can SMU do? What more can Miami do? I get it.
Starting point is 00:03:27 Everybody says, just run the table and you'll be super highly ranked. Well, why does that only apply to some? Why does it just run the table and you'll be highly ranked only applied to a few? This is foolishness to me. Well, and I feel like both SMU and BYU of the Big 12 are both getting hosed here because SMU should definitely be ranked higher.
Starting point is 00:03:49 But then I also feel like BYU should be a spot in front of SMU, not a spot behind them because, you know, they both have one loss and BYU's win was over SMU. So it's like, hey, I wish we could settle this one on the field. Oh, yeah, we kind of did. Yeah, as far as Miami, I agree with you. I will say that the college football playoff committee, I feel has actually been more fair than the AP and the coaches poll,
Starting point is 00:04:14 because the AP has Miami ranked behind every two-loss SEC team, right? Where the CFP only has Miami behind one of those, and that's Alabama, whereas they're in front of Ole Miss, Georgia, and Tennessee. The AP poll has Miami behind all of those teams. I'm starting though and again like you know Miami probably should be a couple of spots higher I'm actually going to play a clip from the commissioner Jim Phillips
Starting point is 00:04:40 in a moment because Kenton you're always saying we want Commissioner Phillips to be standing up for his conference he's done that this week an audio video that came out earlier on today he's done that I do think Miami's not in a terrible position though Kenton and obviously coming off a loss to a team that they should have beaten
Starting point is 00:05:00 in Georgia Tech but at least like the hurricanes have an opportunity, KG, where, yeah, if they win their next three games, which would include the ACC championship game, if they get there against SMU, Miami's definitely in the playoffs. The same can be said for SMU. If SMU wins the ACCC, they're going to be in. I actually think Miami, who moved up a spot from last week, despite the fact they were on the buy, they moved up from number nine to number eight. I kind of wonder, now obviously Miami cannot afford to gamble with this because when you're in the ACC, you're not going to get favorable treatment. They're going to try to squeeze in as many SEC teams as possible.
Starting point is 00:05:38 But since Miami's ranked pretty highly, Kenton, and if Miami wins their next two games as they should against Wake Forest and then against Syracuse, they're probably going to end up moving up a couple spots, maybe number six before the regular season is done. Do you think it's possible? Because we talk about the whole one bid, two bid, zero bid scenario. Do you think it's possible that if Miami finishes, the. regular season 11 and 1, and they lose maybe by a field goal against SMU in the in the ACC championship game, and it's a really good close game.
Starting point is 00:06:12 Maybe Miami's ranked highly enough by that point that they could actually survive another loss. I don't think SMU can. If SMU loses in the ACCC championship game, it's a wrap for them. Yeah, I agree. I think that that's the only outcome where you see, too, is if Miami does not win the ACC. see this again this is a sham and it's a travesty based on big brand bias let's just be very very real about that big conference bias as well the overlap of those two has created something
Starting point is 00:06:44 very nasty here that's that's just what we're looking at don't can you pull up that top 25 one more time one more time right because i need to get into something and and here's the part of how i know that this big conference bias is bad scroll down to the bottom of it for me get give me to the 20s or so for me, if you will, please. Just out of curiosity, what have Missouri or Illinois done to justify being ranked here? Yeah, I have no idea. What have... Well, you know, well, Missou, of course, was very highly ranked to start the season.
Starting point is 00:07:21 So it's just like they were ranked so highly that they just haven't gotten penalized enough for their three losses. But again, and this is what I mean by us, that big conference. bias because these teams have to be propped up in order to prop up the other teams in those conferences. You have to say, well, they beat a ranked Missouri. Well, they beat a ranked Illinois as opposed to acknowledging both of those teams have objectively been very midly. That's just the reality of what these teams have been. So I, again, I find it so fascinating and so interesting that we are sitting here debating whether or not two teams get in and what scenario by which two teams get in when it's very, very clear that, you know, there's something being pushed here
Starting point is 00:08:07 through all the talking heads in national media saying, well, you know, you can't tell me that the spread would be or who the spread would be for. And, you know, last time you put in a team that didn't deserve or that shouldn't have been there, there was a massive blowout against TCU and did it up. Well, that TCU team earned a right to be in the national championship, how did they do so. Yeah. Right. Last time I checked, that TCU team has more playoff wins than Oklahoma. Is that correct or is that incorrect? Correct.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Just making sure. So I look at it and I say to myself, you know, you can say what you want about these rankings and how different teams end up different places. But again, I just want to know by what criteria some of these teams are ranked as highly as they are. Because again, in what world is SMU's lost to a one lost team that terrible to where they belong there? And what world is Miami's lost that terrible to where they belong there?
Starting point is 00:09:02 If you say Notre Dame is in front of Miami, despite their loss being worse, because they lost later than Miami, okay, explain SMU. You can say that Notre Dame has, you can't say Notre Dame has beaten better teams than SMU since then because almost every team that Notre Dame is being SMU has beaten. So I would like to know what's the criteria? you. What's the point? I wish I could answer, but I do want to hear when we come back what ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips had to say about all this because Kenton, he's pissed. And I like to hear it. I like to hear that fire. I liked when, you know, when we were watching him at the ACC kickoff media days, he was fired up about the lawsuits and the disrespect to the ACC. He's fired up about the CFP rankings. You want to keep it locked right here, my friends. We're not done yet.
Starting point is 00:09:53 We're only getting started on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC. you know, we're only getting started with Mint Mobile, and I'm so happy we have them aboard the Lockdown Podcast Network. Thank you so much for making this episode of Lockdown ACC, your first listen and your first watch today.
Starting point is 00:11:41 All right. So let me pull up these comments from Commissioner Phillips that just came out a little earlier today, Kenton, about the three ACC teams. We talked about them. Miami ranked number eight, SMU 13th, Clemson, 17th in the college football playoff poll. Here's the commission. Very honestly, I was disappointed.
Starting point is 00:12:01 I was disappointed that Miami was eighth. I just think they're a top 16, and I don't understand how they get leaped by another Power 4 team that played an FCS game last weekend, and Miami was off. SMU, I think people are not paying attention, and this thing cuts both ways. We heard last year with Florida State that they didn't look like they were the same team without Jordan Travis, and that ultimately. cost us and cost Florida State a chance to be in the semifinals and then maybe the finals, right, the college football playoff of four. And so, listen, that what's done is done. But this year,
Starting point is 00:12:45 Kevin Jennings has taken over at SMU and they have not lost. They were just okay offensively, the first two games at Nevada, then home against BYU. But they've been letter perfect. And so to be 13th. I just think they're inside the top 12. And finally, Clemson, I think Clemson's a top 15 team. They're one of, I think, it's 10 or 11 FBS teams that is undefeated on the road amongst other things. So at the end of the day, we still have two weeks left to play. I made those comments known to the committee members that are watching the ACC. And so, listen, we have to win. And all of this is a moot point about where our ranking is and whether we're in with multiple teams or not. And that's the beauty and fun of the rest of the college football season.
Starting point is 00:13:32 But, you know, that was my initial reaction after watching the show last night. What do you think, Kenton? I mean, I'm happy to hear him speaking up for the ACC, and I thought he made, you know, valid points. You know, probably, you know, with Clemson's loss to Louisville being a little bit fresher, that one's kind of a harder one to speak up for. But Clemson has been very good at times this year. And, you know, their first loss was to, you know, a Georgia team that the committee loves, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:59 no matter how many games Georgia loses, the committee will continue to love them. You know, Louisville, obviously, unfortunately, didn't help Clemson that, you know, Louisville lost to Stanford after beating Clemson. But Louisville is a very good team this year. So, you know, I appreciate him speaking up for Clemson as well. Well, I absolutely appreciate Jim Phillips speaking up for the conference. And I would like to see more fire. I appreciate it. I appreciate a point-play period. You know, Jim Phillips isn't really that showman type of guy,
Starting point is 00:14:29 and I appreciate him making a statement at all because he didn't have to, right? You know, it was the right thing to do, but he didn't have to. And I'll say this, Donald, you talk about Louisville, losing Stanford, not being a good look and all. Since when do who the people you lose to, since when do who they lose to matter in the thing? Because if that's the case, how do you justify Bama being where they are? Right. They lost to a team.
Starting point is 00:14:52 They lost to Georgia State. How do you justify where Notre Dame is lost to a bottom half of the Mac team? You know what I mean? So you run into that problem. And again, shout out to Jim Phillips for saying something. But you know, there's always more to be said in terms of how this thing is looking and how this thing is working out. Because we are looking at a situation where, objectively speaking, there is a bias against the SEC. There is, I'm sorry, against the ACC.
Starting point is 00:15:21 There is a, hey, you won't. are worse because you all are worse and that's all there is to it because like we talked about before with strength of schedule how is strength of schedule determined oh it's determined by hey this team uh is beat this team who was ranked in the preseason well what if that team you have ranked in the preseason was wrong what if you were just wrong speaking to the acc we saw with florida state sometimes you can be wrong about who you had where in the preseason that have we not seen that in a major way in the Big Ten. Everybody's talking about Indiana's beating nobody.
Starting point is 00:15:58 Well, I find it so interesting. I find it so, so interesting that the same team that is Tennessee's worst loss can be Texas's key win. Yeah. It got to be Uchiwali or one Mike. It can't be both. You have to pick aside and stay there.
Starting point is 00:16:16 So, again, it's just a very, very contrived, very kind of circular, logic of, well, if you beat this team, then you're a good team. But even if you prove that you're not a good team and you just beat that team, you're still a good team because you beat that team. It doesn't work like that. I want to talk a little bit about ACC quarterbacks, Kenton, because I was watching ACC PM and Mark Packer was talking with Tom Lugan Bill.
Starting point is 00:16:46 And Tom ranked his top eight quarterbacks in the ACC. Now, people need to remember. And, you know, Cam Ward gets a lot of respect. Still not enough respect, in my opinion. Like, he's been dropping too far down some people's highsman list. But people probably don't realize that the ACC has the top two passers in the country in terms of yardage. Cam Ward is one. You probably knew that.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Kyle McCord is the second. It's crazy. Crazy to think that. And the ACC, I think, has, like, you know, six or seven of the top 20 passers in the country. So they call it the conference of quarterbacks for a reason. Do you agree with this ranking that Tom Luganville put out there? Top eight ACC quarterbacks. Number eight, he goes with Jacoby Criswell from UNC,
Starting point is 00:17:36 who's done a nice job, you know, turning chicken bleep at a chicken salad because, you know, UNC had a quarterback crisis earlier this year. Chriswell has not been the problem. He goes Malik Murphy from Duke at number seven. C.J. Bailey from NC State at number six, which I think is very, very respectful of the true freshman who's really kind of grown into, grown into the season since he's been starting the past several games. Haynes King at number five of Georgia Tech, Kyle McCord of Syracuse at number four, Cade Clubnik of Clemson at number three. You kind of go chalk with the standings now is what he did. Kevin Jennings of SMU at number two and Cam Ward of Miami at number one. Is there anything else you would do? I feel like there should.
Starting point is 00:18:20 maybe be a spot for Fernando Mendoza. Like maybe they think his team's not good enough, but Mendoza has been lighting it up this year. And I don't think Mendoza has not had the support around him that some of these other quarterbacks. Nope. He just has not. You know, your leading receiver, I believe,
Starting point is 00:18:36 is still his tight end at this point in the season. You're looking at a situation where the running back that was supposed to be all world has been banged up and in and out of the rotation all year. And you're looking at a situation where a guy who was supposed to hand off left, hand off right, make good decisions, don't turn the ball over, has been thrust
Starting point is 00:18:55 into the situation of you're no longer going to have to be a quarterback that we win with or in spite of. You're going to have to be a quarterback we win because of. And not to say that they've been doing a ton of winning or he's been playing to a level that's extremely high. I'm not going to say extremely high, but I think it's high enough to be one of the upper half of the conference. Yeah, no, I would agree with you on that. But other than that, I wouldn't change too much. but maybe, I don't know, maybe Mendoza over Chris, Chris, well is probably where I would have gone there. So I would only shake that up just a little bit.
Starting point is 00:19:27 Now, but speaking of Jacoby, Chriswell, did you see the news about his head coach? Mack Brown is going to, in his words, he expects to remain UNC's head coach beyond this season, he said, on an appearance on Curious XM. I know Kenton's happy as an NC state guy. He says, I love the organization. of football, he says. I love fixing things that are broken. I love planning for a game, the strategy
Starting point is 00:19:53 that goes into it. But most of the time, I'll get mad at Transfer Portal. I'll get mad at NIL. I'll get mad about this. I'll be mad at the university. Then I'll go down and eat lunch with the players and say, you know what, this is why I'm here. When I see one with his head down or he's got some joy because his sister won a contest or won a basketball game or he lost a girlfriend or flunk the test or drop the ball on Saturday. That's my purpose, he says. My purpose is to fix him and try to help him get to a better place. So he's been telling his staff and his players, he's going to remain coach for another year.
Starting point is 00:20:30 Mac Brown, 73 years old. But like also kind of what he was saying there, Kenton, about, you know, really getting frustrated by things like the transfer portal and NIL. That may be the sign. It's time to get out. But he looks at all the other reasons as to why he wants to stay in. Knock it off, Donald. Hey, William, don't let them drive you out of there.
Starting point is 00:20:50 You hold that. How long are Congress people holding their jobs? Oh, you stay there. You should run for Congress. He probably wins somewhere. I knock that off. Knock that off. William, it's me and you right now.
Starting point is 00:21:03 I'm talking to you, Matt. I'm sorry, I got to call you, Mac. I got to put some respect on your name, Matt. Matt, I'm talking to you right now. You stay right there. You fight and you scrape and you claw and you go out. and you go out Jim Behan style kicking and screaming. Don't you go gently into the night, Matt, right?
Starting point is 00:21:25 All the way from outstate to tech. You're one of the, what, how many coaches of active coaches have won the national championship in this thing as a head coach? There is him, there's Kirby, there's Davo. Is anybody asking Kirby and Davo to go? Wow. You know, so you stay in there, Matt. You stay in there until you're good and ready, brother.
Starting point is 00:21:51 If you want to be in there until 20, 35. You know, hey, if you want to coach from beyond the afterlife, weekend, and Bernie style, you stay right there until they make you leave. Great job, Matt. I love it. That's a bad. Matt Brown for UNC head coach, baby. He's got my vote.
Starting point is 00:22:11 20 more years. 20 more years. I love it. Oh, man. We got some games coming up this weekend, including a Thursday night affair. For your next listen, make sure you check out our other shows, Kenton and Grayson do an awesome job on Locked on Wolfpack. I host Locked on Cains. Kenton, the Wolfpack, have got a Thursday night game on the road at Georgia Tech Yellow Jack.
Starting point is 00:24:58 They're eight and a half point favorites. You know, of course, we all saw what they did in my Miami Hurricanes a couple of weeks ago. I'll say this, Kenton. I hope NC State's 61st rated rushing defense is up to the task because we know how Georgia Tech is going to try to attack NC State's defense. and, you know, Haynes King, he's trying to get that shoulder back to 100%. He's going to run a lot. Aaron Filo may come in to throw passes, but I do have a feeling, though,
Starting point is 00:25:27 that NC State is going to be a little bit more prepared for that than Miami was, because even though Miami knew, anytime Philo was coming out on the field, it was a throw. They still had no answers for anything. You know, I'm bought back to a coach that's not really similar to Key in terms of personality, but he's similar to him in terms of how his teams play in some ways in a guy named Brett Bilemo. And Coach Bilemo would always say, when teams are playing against us, we always hear they're going to have a physical week of practice. They're going to have a physical week of practice.
Starting point is 00:26:04 Will you have been physical for a week? We have been doing physical since before the season started. And I think that will be NC State's undoing. in this one, don't get me wrong. I don't think that that's a team that has quit on the season. I just think that they're not a team that is physical enough, particularly at the linebacker position, which is one of the most important in the 335 defense
Starting point is 00:26:28 to handle the running game of Haines King and Jamal Haines coming at him downhill, no frills. I really don't. And so with that in mind, that's what I look at and kind of say like, hey, this is not going to go in the Wolfpack's favor here. I'd be glad to be wrong. I'd be super glad to be wrong. I just don't see it in the cards for the past.
Starting point is 00:26:51 You know, I will, I don't think Clemson is going to struggle very much with the Citadel. But I am going to be looking forward to watching some of that game because, like, at certain points this week, Kenton, Clemson's barely had enough offensive linemen healthy to actually get through a practice this week. So this is the week they're probably not needed that much, get them ready for South Carolina. but Clemson's been down a lot of O-line due to injury. I think it was on Monday or Tuesday, they had nine O-Line men injured in Davos.
Starting point is 00:27:21 Like, I don't know how we're going to practice today. We'll see how that plays out. But I don't even see a line for that game. It's probably Clemson in the 30s favorite against the Citadel. You know, we'll talk a little bit, probably a lot more about this game on the squad tomorrow. But somebody's going to get their second win on Saturday. 1.30 p.m. streaming only on ACC
Starting point is 00:27:46 on ACC Digital Network. You will not find it on a television set anywhere, nor should you want to find it. One in nine, Florida State, against one in ten, Charleston Southern. Now, the Seminels, Kenton, are, they're favored by 33 and a half points. Can we agree that Florida State's going to win? But I don't see how a team that's not even scored 33 points in a game all season is going to beat anybody by more than 30, three points. Here's the thing. I think Florida State wins this game by about two to three touchdowns.
Starting point is 00:28:17 Maybe, maybe if I'm being aggressive four, I don't see a 30 point. Yeah. No, I don't either. Again, like you said, they have not scored 33 all year. They just have not. So with that in mind, how do I see them beating another team by 33? I'm not sure they could put up 30 if they were running a skeleton drill with no defense out there.
Starting point is 00:28:35 So again, the scoring 30 against live bodies, I'm going to say a nay no for me. Yeah. This is a pretty good game. Now, if, you know, if both teams had, you know, maybe taking care of business in some recent games, they might still have a shot at the ACC championship. But regardless, these are a couple of, you know, winning teams in the ACC. Pit is on the road at Louisville. Louisville are eight point favorite. So, like, is the thinking that Louisville is going to be so angry after what happened against Stanford? Because, you know, Pitt, Pitt kind of let Clemson off the hook last week, but. Pitt played a lot better last week than Louisville did. So I feel like Louisville being favored by eight even at home is kind of a lot for this one. I'd be more in like the five to six and a half range. What do you think? You know, Louisville has been so mercurial all year.
Starting point is 00:29:27 They're a team that I would avoid in any type of bad situation. At this point in the season, which Louisville are you going to get? That's the question, right? Are you going to get the Louisville that beat Clemson? Are you going to get the Louisville that loses to. Stanford. Are you going to get the Louisville that gave Miami every single thing they could handle? Or are you going to get the Louisville, rather, that goes out there and just trips and stumbles and bumbles all over themselves against Notre Dame? You don't know which Louisville you're going
Starting point is 00:30:03 to get. So I think that them being favored by that much is kind of interesting. I get it. It is on a snide right now. I get it. I understand it. I'm not going to. to pretend that, oh, that doesn't matter. And it's just nothing. I understand. I'm just saying I struggle to see a world where I'm saying, hey, that team is a touchdown plus better than Pitt. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:27 Unless my do with his coach, choke jobs. Yeah. And I guess if you go by a common opponent, Louisville was far more impressive against Clemson on the road than Pitt was at home. I still thought Pitt should have won that game against Clemson. but, you know, kudos to Clemson for making the plays necessary to get that done. 8 p.m. on Saturday, Virginia Tech at Duke. Virginia Tech is actually favored by three and a half points on the road.
Starting point is 00:30:54 I find it hard to believe that Virginia Tech is five and five on the year. I feel like they're way better than that, aren't they? Like, they're five and five, they're playing for bowl eligibility this week. Duke is two wins and two losses better than Virginia Tech at seven and three. and yet Duke is an underdog at home, I think that tells you a lot about Virginia Tech. They've underachieved on the field this year. Underachieved massively.
Starting point is 00:31:21 It is not an understatement to say at times, you know, when you talk about the most mercurial, I think that has to go. I don't see a world where that doesn't go to Virginia Tech. Because in terms of from week to week, just truly not knowing what you're going to get, who has beaten Virginia Tech at that game? Who? I mean, you have a team that you start off this season with a loss to a Rutgers team that we now know more about. Do you think Rutgers is a good team now?
Starting point is 00:31:52 Most people would say no, right? And then you go out and give Miami everything they can hold when Miami turns out to be a much better team than we imagine. You go out there and you dominate a team like Georgia Tech who beats Miami. You go out there and you dominate Boston College when they were actually rolling out of. high clip. But then again, every time you look up, it's always something. It's always something with Virginia Tech struggling to get out of their own way. So, I mean, I feel like, I feel like, you know, this Virginia Tech team should be better. But it's tough for me to look at them and say, hey, I know who they are. I know what they are because we don't. We still don't. When they're rolling at their highest, when drones is rolling at its highest, when Byshaal tuning is healthy, there's something they're a force to be reckoned with. How often has that been?
