Alex Donno and Kenton Gibbs debate Miami’s surprising placeme...nt as #1 in Brad Crawford’s early playoff bracket, call out perennial powerhouses like Texas and USC for being overhyped, and question if the ACC deserves more respect—and more bids—under the current playoff system. The discussion then shifts to Josh Pate’s most hated college football teams, with Miami cracking the top five and Notre Dame leading the charge. Starting point is 00:00:00 This college football playoff prediction for next year is really bullish for one ACC program, but completely neglecting the rest. You are Locked on ACC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Shout out to the Everydayers and thank you so much for making Lockdown ACC your first listen. We're available free wherever you get your podcast. We're free on YouTube. We're part of the number one lockdown podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:35 network, your team every day. He is Kenton Gibbs, former NC State defensive linemen and co-host of Lockdown Wolfpack. I am Alex Dono, host of Lockdown-Kane's, and today's episode is brought to you by Fanduel. Fanduel is giving you a way to turn that energy into even bigger potential wins with a college basketball parlay profit boost. Head to fanduel.com to get started. Of course, it is March, so the madness is beginning here, and the Duke Blue Devils have clinched an ACC regular season championship and the top seat in the ACC tournament.
Starting point is 00:01:07 We'll talk about that plus some other surprising results from over the weekend. Most hated college football teams, there is an ACC program among those, according to this report. And that same ACC program, Kenton, is getting some early love here on this, I guess you can call this a way too early college football playoff bracket for next year. It's another season of 12 team CFP form. Matt. We're not expanding it yet. And according to Brad Crawford of CBS Sports, he does have the Miami Hurricanes as the only
Starting point is 00:01:41 ACC representative, but not just that, Kenton. And I'm, you know, I'm obviously very bullish on Miami, a little home cooking from Dono, but I'm not even sure if I would home cook Miami this much. He's got Miami as the number one seed in next year's college football playoff. So he's got Miami as a number one. Texas Longhorns is the number two. Indiana, the defending champs is the three-seed Notre Dame as the four. Texas Tech, five, Georgia, six, Oregon seven, Ohio State, eight, LSU nine, Ole Miss 10, USC 11, and then Memphis as the old charity for the group of six as the 12. So first thing, Kenton, that stands out to you about this before we dig into what it means for the ACC.
Starting point is 00:02:33 The first thing that stands out to me is the same thing that always stands out to me. These people don't know what the hell they're talking about. Here's the thing, right? We all put up our best educated guests, and I get it. We got a 24-7, 365 news cycle now. Oh, yeah. I get it. Me and Donald get on this show every single day, and we tell you what we think is going to happen.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Bud Crawford's doing the same thing, so I don't want to paint him as uniquely bad. However, I do have a very interesting revelation for you, Donald. Let's jump in, let's do our best Sherman and Mr. Peabody impression, shall we? Let's jump in the Wayback Machine, okay? Let's jump back about 40 weeks. That's how I'm good to you, 40 weeks. Sounds good. All right.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Now, let's talk about what our boy, Brad Crawford, said what happened in the CFP, with everything according to his, you know, CBS sports thing with straight seating. These were the teams that were going to make the playoff last year. Miami, so he got one correct. Ohio State, he got another one correct. Alabama, he got another one correct. Georgia and Oregon, he got those five correct. Those five out of 12 over half the field did he pick to make it, did not.
Starting point is 00:03:54 Did LSU make it, Donno? No, LSU did not make it. What about Clemson? Did they make it? They certainly did not. Well, we got to appreciate our troops. What about Navy? No, they did not.
Starting point is 00:04:10 We got Matt Campbell's previous team and his current team. That Iowa State or Penn State making. Not even close. Actually, Iowa State was not that far off Penn State, not even close. Okay, well, what about the Texas Longhorns? No. And they're going to be on these projections every year. They'll probably never make it again. And this is what I'm saying. Like, I'm not mad at people who are guessing and using like, hey, the best predictor of future behaviors is the past. Texas is the piss down their leg every time they've played a meaningful team in the past few years.
Starting point is 00:04:47 That's just who they are. That's just who they are, especially with Arch Manning at quarterback. Arch is a perfect name for him for reasons I cannot disclose on this show without losing our clean rating. The young man is terrible. He's terrible. But we continue to play this game. And now USC is coming into the phone and defray. Oh, we know Lincoln Riley's got his swagger back. He's got the magic out of nowhere, Donna.
Starting point is 00:05:13 It's foolishness. It's foolishness. It's nonsense. This thought that the ACC is so inferior. We only get in one team. Meanwhile, the Big Ten is going to be sitting up here with at minimum, according to this, four representatives. Four, yeah. The SEC is going to be sitting up here with four representatives as well.
Starting point is 00:05:34 And everybody else would just kind of get in where you fit in. Because we're not the only ones that got hit with the one piece. The Big 12 got hit. That's right. If it ain't Texas Tech, it ain't. So every year we do this, where it's, oh, yeah, we're going to tell you who's going to be in a national championship. And in reality, it's just, all right, let me close my eyes and throw darts at the top 15 winning his programs of all time. And wherever those darts land, it's the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:06:02 So out of this field of 12, I mean, the whole, you know, trying to guess the group of 16 that gets in, it is what it is. So I'm not going to knock him for the Memphis pick. But the boldest pick for these 12 teams, I would say it's USC. Would you say that? I mean, LSU, I guess, is another one. LSU is spending unprecedented amounts of NIL money in the portal. And I do think like there's going to be like a first year Lane Kiffin effect. I don't know how he'll sustain it there.
Starting point is 00:06:33 But I can see LSU getting in. I'm not saying they will. I could see it. USC have a little bit of a harder time. The other teams that are in there, Ohio State, safe pick. Oregon safe pick. Ole Miss Trinidad Chambles is back. You know, he sued to get another year.
Starting point is 00:06:48 I could see that one. but USC to me is the one that's a little bit of a stretch and maybe Texas as well. I could see Texas and USC. I was just about to say, I get it. I get you. I'm there with you with USC. But again, Texas show me something. Show me something.
Starting point is 00:07:06 Piss a drop against a decent team offensively. Piss a drop, just a drop. I don't need much. I don't need a full stream. Just show me something against the defense that has a post because last year they did not. And this year, they're playing out of conference. These are out of conference games. Texas State, UTSA, and Ohio State.
Starting point is 00:07:28 That's their out-of-conference deal there. So, I mean, do we see them beating Ohio State? I would say no. Every other team on this schedule, mainly SEC teams, all that good stuff. I mean, they've got a pretty favorable schedule, but even still, do I see them going to the playoffs off that schedule? No. No, because, again, I don't believe in Archman.
Starting point is 00:07:50 at all. If you can show me the defense that was really good last year that you could just say, hey, arts lit him up, watch this film and you'll see how good of a player he is. I'm all ears. I will watch it. But I have not seen that against anybody, against any good defense, against Ohio State last year. How many points that offense score? Oh, what was it? Like seven. Seven, yeah. Well, well, you know, Ohio State was early in the season. Let's go a little bit later in the season. What about against Georgia?
Starting point is 00:08:23 What's you thinking? They must have scored at least 14 points, right? 10. 10. The only team that they played well against and got to win against that had a defense that on paper was good was Texas A&M. Yeah. That's it. That's all.
Starting point is 00:08:42 So, again, USC, I get it. You've got a bunch of new faces in the fray and all that good stuff. The reality is when I look at USC, I say, hey, things could work out that way. We haven't hyped them up every year and saw them let us down every single year. We do this every year with Texas. We've done this every year with Arch. Every time it's a list, it's a Heisman list, it's a Dave O'Brien list, it's a quarterback watch list.
Starting point is 00:09:11 Ah, the guy that can only put up 16 points, including overtime, against Kentucky, who no longer, who's, Old head coach ain't the same head coach no more. That guy is going to be the one. He's going to be the one to get it done. Stop it. If Archer's last name was Dono or Gibbs, nobody would give a damn. Nobody would have Texas. Oh, they're in.
Starting point is 00:09:34 I know Texas is going to be in. Not only is Texas going to get in, Dono, they're going to get a pie, which means they're going to win. And he's going to win Heism according to the odds. Yeah, okay. All right. I wish we could short odds like we do stocks. I wish, Dono, I would be.
Starting point is 00:09:49 living easy and retired. I would tell everybody I know, take out a second mortgage and put it all against arch. And I guarantee you it's going to hit me. Yeah, man. You know, I think we might be able to do shorts on that now, if not very soon. But when we come back, would the ACC be better off with some of these alternative college football playoff proposals down the road? And, uh, Miami made the Josh Pate list. And it's not his personal biases, but his list of most hated college football teams, who else from the ACC could have made it? You want to keep it locked right here. We're only getting started on this brand new episode of locked on ACC. My friends, college basketball is nonstop. Big games, tight spreads, momentum swings every single night. Starting point is 00:13:09 when we're several months away from the season starting? But the ACC only got one team in last year, Miami. You know, this year, the champion is guaranteed to be in, but that's it. Like that's the only auto bid you're going to get, right? So we've seen a year where the ACC only gets one team into the 12-team playoff. Now they're projected to only get one team at an next year's 12-team playoff. You know, you and I, when those proposals were coming out about, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:36 expansion to 14 or 16 teams, which is going to happen at some point. And the idea of, you know, the SEC and the Big 10 getting four auto bids apiece. and the ACC and the Big 12 only getting two auto bids apiece. We snubbed our noses at that a little bit. But you know what? Maybe two guaranteed bids
Starting point is 00:13:57 is better than the idea that we might get stuck with one a lot of years. I know that people aren't going to like to hear me say this. I know people aren't going to like to hear me say this. But in the words of real, the young OG, I speak the truth.
Starting point is 00:14:09 I don't want anybody to have auto bids. I don't know you. You know, I agree. I'm a big believer in, Earn it. Show it. Prove to everybody. The only folks that I'm okay with getting auto bids, I do want to make this one exception because we all know in life, absolutes are for babies and fools. And so I do want to say the one exception I will offer for I'm okay with them getting an auto bid is the one group of six team every year. Because I don't think it's fair to them that we see, we could see a team go undefeated and beat Power 5 competition and not just some Power 5 slags. They can beat some real Power 5 com. And people will still look at them and say, oh, no, no, no, the hell me. I say screw them.
Starting point is 00:14:52 I only want auto bids. I will take auto bids for Power 4 conference champions. I say, and I'm not saying I never want the group of six to get in, but only if you really, really deserve it is all I'm saying. But that's my point. I don't think, I don't think it's fair to live in a world where two teams could play the same team, right? one team wins out,
Starting point is 00:15:16 beats that team, another team has two or three losses, loses to the team that this group of 16 beat. Okay. But they're going to get in because they're in the right conference. That's the only reason I'm okay with there being a singular group of six where we're like, hey, we have to do this. Because I think without it, a lot of years,
Starting point is 00:15:35 we would see teams not get put in all together. And even with the group of six, I'm barely on that fence of, hey, let's do that. because those UCF teams that were really good, they would have made it. They would have made it even without an auto bid. They would have 16 teams. They would have been in.
Starting point is 00:15:53 If it's just merits, did you earn it? They would have been in. But with that being said, yeah, I don't like all of bids at all. And if you're asking me, do I want to take the proposal of us getting two because it's more than we have now? I want to see us earn more. I want to see better play. I want to see better coaching.
Starting point is 00:16:11 I want to see better performances. And then when we are standing there saying, hey, we've had multiple teams that have earned their way in and they're being kept up, then we can have a conversation. But for now, I'm like, hey, man, let's let's let it roll. But I do want to say, if it's going to be humans deciding it like it is now, then, yeah, I'm not, I'm not against having all those bids because these humans keep saying, well, this team just, they just feel good. They just feel, oh, they got a really good loss. They got a bunch of good losses. I don't give a damn. I don't care.
Starting point is 00:16:43 But you win the football games. When you are locking horns with the other best teams in the nation, if you get whooped every time, guess what that means? You're not one of the best teams in the nation. You need to get on out of it. But now we've got, well, you know, Dono. His last name is, man, well, you know, Dono. They have played some really good teams in the Big Ten, you know.
Starting point is 00:17:04 So ultimately, with the way it's set up now, I'm not against us having two guarantees, but that's just my fault. Yeah, no, no doubt about that. So what do you make of Josh Pate from On Three Sports? I mean, his very popular and recently polarizing. We won't get into that college football show. I guess he did research polling fans from around the country. And he compiled his list of the eight most hated college football teams.
Starting point is 00:17:32 Now, this is not like his personal opinion on who he hates. This is data that he got from the college football world. So the top eight are Notre Dame. same as number one most hated. And I'm not going to argue that one. I don't know if you will either. Alabama at number two, I still feel like they're kind of living off of Nick Saban's reputation on that one.
Starting point is 00:17:53 I don't feel like Bama's the number two most hated anymore. Texas at third, LSU at fourth, I think heavily influenced by the recent Lane Kiffin events. I can live with that one. Miami at number five, USC at six, Michigan at seven,
Starting point is 00:18:09 Ohio State at eight. And Kenton, I've already done a locked on canes about this. And to me, if anyone's going to try to say the U is back, Miami's got to be higher on that list than number five. Because if you were to take that poll back in 1989, Miami would have been number one all the way. So the U is not back yet. There's something about Miami being good that breaks people's brains. Folks lose all logic and rationality and reasonability when Miami is good.
Starting point is 00:18:38 And by good, I mean Miami good. I don't mean like they won eight games and like they're going to go to a nice bowl good. I mean, when Miami is competing for national championships, is something in the national ether that like everybody gets together and just starts foaming and seething at the mouth. There's something going on down there. There's something I don't like. And so I do agree if Miami is to be back, they need to be higher up on that list. And I'm going to tell you, you could tell that that list was put out on social media and that's who was voting.
Starting point is 00:19:09 because that's a very young man's list. That's a, that's a, y'all did recent things list. Because if you get those old heads, the guys who've been watching college football since the helmets were soft, I'm joking, I know, I know the helmets ain't been soft
Starting point is 00:19:23 in almost 100 years, I understand. But you get the old guys to get the vote in, it'll look way different. You get the old women to get in there and get that vote, it'll look way different. But when you put it on X, when you put it on Instagram,
Starting point is 00:19:36 when you put it on probably everywhere except Facebook, maybe even Facebook. They're going to get a very different crowd kind of voting on this thing. And that's why all of these teams that are at the top all had very recent scandals. Something very recently happened where it's like, what are they doing? Why are they doing that, i.e. Notre Dame being herbs and crying and complaining. We don't want to plan the bowling because we were robbed of a national championship opportunity.
Starting point is 00:20:03 And if we don't get to play the national championship, then what was that you for? So what if we lost our only two games against us? other competitors at the playoffs. So we belong in because we're special and our helmets are golden. Shouldn't Michigan, based on recent events, shouldn't Michigan be higher than number seven? I mean, they had a scandal that cast a cloud over a national championship from like two years ago. And they're number seven. I feel like they should be higher.
Starting point is 00:20:32 And that's why I said this is a very young man, because this is somebody who these are somebody's rather who are like very very like hmm what's going on here what what is happening right now in front of me because there's not a world where lSU is more hated than michigan if you're talking about the national sphere of college athletics it's only the past two months like it's the past two months ls u's more hated and here's the thing do people not like lane kiffin of course of course but we all know the circumstances under which whittingham was hired to be michigan's head coach, right? We all do remember, we all do remember, like Dono said,
Starting point is 00:21:13 the scandal on the field, even if we say throw the off the field stuff off, because everybody's got off the stuff, sure, off the field stuff, sure. The on the field stuff, very recent for Michigan, LSU ain't done nothing but play some dog crap football last year. That's all. Just some good old fashioned bad football. That's all they did. Anybody else from the ACC who could have made the cut outside of Miami?
Starting point is 00:21:36 me. I mean, Florida's, and I don't mean this is like an insult to these programs, because from where I sit, if you're one of the eight most hated, it means like people care about you and people think about you. So I don't know, if I'm a Florida state fan today, I feel a little slighted that maybe we should be on that list. I mean, Clemson, Clemson's done a lot of winning in the last 10 years. I see the vision. And here's the thing. Davo has ended up on the right side of history in such a miraculous way in these past few months. with the linebacker literally saying, hey, they're offering me more to go over here, but that's illegal. So I'm going to tell you that that's going on. And oh, great, send us the screenshots. And the lineberg is like, no, you have to match their offer first. It's like, did you just make us feel sympathy for Davos, Sweeney?
Starting point is 00:22:24 How dare you? How dare you? This is shenanigans at its finest. And Florida State, they haven't been relevant enough. They haven't been relevant enough. They haven't been relevant enough. They haven't done enough. The only thing that they're known for right now is being the team that's too broke to fire their head coach.
Starting point is 00:22:41 That's it. Yeah. It's hard to hate that. You kind of pity that. You feel bad for it. Exactly. Exactly. You look at it.
Starting point is 00:22:47 You don't, you can't pick on that kid. It's like, oh, poor baby. You know, that's not like, oh, you think you're so smart. You think you're so good. It's like, hey, that kid's dead lasting class. Oh, we don't pick on him during popcorn reading. Don't pick him. Stop it.
Starting point is 00:23:04 It's rude. It's unnecessary. Pick somebody else. You know, that's why I feel like Florida State ain't up here. Well, when we come back, I think if people were to rank like most hated basketball programs, I think the Duke Blue Devils would probably be on the top of that list, and they have clinched the top regular season spot in the ACC. You want to keep it locked right here.

Starting point is 00:24:58 You know, Clemson beat 24th rank Louisville, although Mikelowe Brown was injured, played sparingly for Louisville. So Clemson won 80 to 75. You know, you had a big win for Duke, like a statement win against Virginia, to clinch number one overall seed in the ACC and at least a share of the ACC regular season championship. But we talked at the end of last week, Kent,
Starting point is 00:25:23 and about what it would take for Virginia to pull off the upset. They didn't get the memo because they lost 77 to 51, and Duke has essentially steamrolled their way, number one in the ACC regular season and a probable number one seed in the tournament. Number one overall is very much in the bag for them. this Duke team I mean, where do you start?
Starting point is 00:25:45 Where do you end? Right? Like obviously you could say, oh yeah, they've got the national player of the year and Camboozer and all that good stuff. But man,
Starting point is 00:25:52 is there a single thing that you would say they can't do? You know, earlier in the fifth season, defending was a problem and now all of a sudden, they're just shutting teams down, shutting teams down.
Starting point is 00:26:04 And you're looking at this thing and saying, what has to happen to stop Duke? What has to happen to be? beat them. The only time that we've seen them lose in their past 20 or so games, that team wasn't called for a single file in the second half that was a shooting foul. If that is what is required to beat them, I am sorry to tell you all, rest of the nation,
Starting point is 00:26:29 it is not likely with how they attack the room, not likely. So, you know, this is a Duke team that's absolutely fantastic. And I'm glad that we're sticking on the positive side of things and the big wins that have happened. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I didn't want to put you on the spot a little too early. You know, the team. He saved it up to drive the dagger. Don't worry.
Starting point is 00:26:51 The dagger is going to be twisted in a couple minutes here. But the team that I cover, Miami, you know, got an important win because their final two regular season games are going to be really tough. Miami beats Boston College at home, 76 to 54. Really good game from Ernest Uday Jr., 11 points, 12, rebounds. Miami had a gigantic scoring run in the first half and never looked back. So Miami is in a really good spot, Kenton, for the double buy, although their final two games are very tricky. They play at SMU, and then they wrap up the season at home against
Starting point is 00:27:26 Louisville. So if they can split those two games, then I think you can lock up a double buy. If they lose both of them, things could get a little dicey, although one of the teams that was breathing down Miami's neck. NC State. Here comes the dagger, Kenton. You lose to Notre Dame in overtime. Notre Dame was coming off just an absolute curb stomping that they suffered at the hands of Duke.
Starting point is 00:27:50 And then they bounce back beating your wolfpack in OT. And what is it now four out of five games lost for NC State? Like you guys are still in the tournament at this moment, but like the seed keeps going down, a nine seed now when it was a five seed a while back. What's going on? You know, Donno, just because they're advertising a new screen and they're bringing it back, doesn't mean that you've got to come and offer the own screen jump scares here. Sorry.
Starting point is 00:28:20 I thought I was having a good episode. I thought we're not going to talk about those shenanigans. You can just talk about Miami's win if you want. I like hearing about that one. You know, great job about Miami. Great job to create distant between them and the teams behind them. We don't have to talk about the team behind it. No, we don't.
Starting point is 00:28:36 In all serious. The thing that is most mind-boggling about NC State and these two losses, okay? And these four losses, rather. Two of them are blowouts. And here's the thing. With me, I'm a big believer in you take what you can get from a game always, regardless of how much you won by, how much you lost by you. You take what you need to take and you kind of go on from there.
Starting point is 00:28:57 Against Virginia, hey, you take away we need to get taller. We need to get better. You can't grow overnight. Notre Dame and Miami, you had both games put away. Nine point or larger leads in both games in the last four minutes of play. In both. And you could not close the game out? This is embarrassing, especially for a team that is as senior laden as what NC
Starting point is 00:29:34 state and will way to try now and here's the worst thing a lot of members of wolf pack nation for those of you who don't know in the acc abroad a lot of members in the world of wolf pack nation do this thing where every loss is a referendum on a coach's career you know every win doesn't get treated like that you get a big win no not a big deal not a big it's like that reminds me of that that reminds me of being a miami baseball fan my miami uh they they won their first 10 games They dropped a couple of tough games to Florida, who's, I think, number 11 in the country. And now it's you got to fire your coach immediately. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:30:11 You do these referendums, yeah. Exactly. And here's the thing. I'm a big anti, oh, God, we lost the game. Let's have a referendum type of guy. Because Will Wade keeps doing all these things that is game in and game out. First time since 1964, NC States won this one. First time since they did it, they did or won this much.
Starting point is 00:30:30 And by the way, Dono, I know you don't want to hear this, but we're closer to 2050 than we are 2000. That's a factual statement. We are closer to the year 2050 than we are 2000. And yet, and yet we keep seeing first time since 19 such and so we will wait. And yet people keep saying that, you know, we need to get rid of them. But here's where I call them out. Because to me, if you lose to Miami because you can't handle the trap, you can't handle it down the stretch and guys are breaking down. whatever, that needs to be drilled to the point where my super seniors, my guys have been here for five years or not here, but who've been playing college basketball for five years now, they can get it done. They can get it done. It's not happening. It's not happening. And if you look at those two games that NC State drop, that's the difference between six place and third place right now. Because right now in ACC, other than number one and two, which is Duke and Virginia, the margins are razor-thead.
Starting point is 00:31:30 Where does Miami sit, Dono? What, in record? In terms of standing. Where does Miami sit right now? They're third. They're third in the ACC at 12 and four in conference. Now, if you flip the NC State game, if you flip that game and you flip NC State against Notre Dame, two games where you have substantial leads that you need to close out, does NC State not take that third place?
Starting point is 00:31:55 They do, yeah. But instead you're down at six. You get what you get. The intensity, the focus was not. out there. And like I said, I've had enough of ghost-faced Dono saying, hey, you want to play a game? It'll be a loss in Notre Dame. I'm sick of it. I've had enough. That is well said. So yeah, the ACC standings now. Duke, Duke is clinch number one, 15 and 1 in conference. Nobody can, only Virginia could finish with the same record, but they would
Starting point is 00:32:23 lose the head-to-head. Virginia second at 13 and 3, Miami at 12 and 4, North Carolina and Clemson at 11 and 5, NC State at 10 and 6, Louisville, 9 and 7, Cal, SMU, Florida State, 8, and 8, and that I won't bore you with the rest, but that's how the ACC standings look now.
