Starting point is 00:00:00 If Clemson really has this much more talent than the rest of the conference, the ACC's in big trouble. You are Locked-on ACCC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Happy Friday, and thank you so much for making Lockdown ACC, your first listen and your first watch. He is Kenton Gibbs, former NC State defensive lineman and co-host of Lockdown Wolfpack. I am Alex Dono, host of Locked on Caines. Today's episode is proudly brought to you by GameTime. Download the GameTime app, create an account, and use code,
Starting point is 00:00:43 Locked on College for $20 off your first purchase. We love the everydayers out there on this loaded episode of Lockdown ACC. NIL Collectives can live another day. The College Sports Commission is already caving into legal challenges. It wasn't the first. It won't be the last. Was there, am I looking at this angle the wrong way, or was there a little bit of a Clemson bias coming out of ACC media days?
Starting point is 00:01:09 So here's the thing, Kenton. And you know, you and I, we were both out there in Charlotte last week, and we voted on the all-ACC team. And we agree Clemson should be in our favor to repeat his ACC championships. We can agree they have a very talented roster. But then I look at what the media voted on here. all-ACC preseason team literally half are orange paw prints 11 11 Clemson tigers make all ACCC and I looked up what the results were last year just to see like was it this
Starting point is 00:01:47 imbalanced in anyone's direction um the the leading team a year ago at this time was five Miami had five uh to lead I think Clemson had four Florida state so that I don't know it was a lot And obviously, like, with Miami having five, I guess you could say, oh, they didn't win the conference. Clemson did so they got it wrong. But 11, Kenton, is that, I mean, if Clemson's that much better than everybody else, forget about the SEC being top heavy. The ACC apparently is a one-team conference. Well, Dono, I think you need to change a perspective here because all offseason, we have talked about. Clemson is one of the favorites, not just in the ACC, but nationally because of what? returning talent, returning more production than anybody else in the nation, basically.
Starting point is 00:02:36 And we expect that an Uber talented team that's returning more talented than anybody in the nation was not going to be a majority of this list. I mean, and here's the part of this where I really want to get into it and say, okay, you could make the argument that 11 is a lot. but even if you move these guys over to other conferences, how many of them are no longer on the board? How many of them? What conferences, T.J. Parker, not an all-conference edging? What conferences, Peter Woods, not an all-conference detackers? What conference do you look at Kay Klubnick,
Starting point is 00:03:12 who has the third highest Heisman odds now? So let's be clear about that. So before you go out here and say, oh, he wouldn't be in this conference or that conference. If he has the third highest Heisman odds, that means that there are two people in front of them. him and one of the people in front of him does not play in the conference. He is Jeremiah Love, nor does he play quarterback. So if you are looking at that, that means that there is one
Starting point is 00:03:33 quarterback that people believe will have a better season than Kane Clubman. So where are all of these guys supposed to be replaced? Who would they be replaced by? I've been beating on the table for Antonio Williams is the bad. He was the baddest man in that receiver room last year. And I told everybody he would be. And I was told, well, no, they got another receiver. It's better. and he showed up and showed out. Westco, a phenomenal freshman who we expect to get better. The offensive line votes, I think some of those might get replaced if you go to other conferences. But every other vote, Sammy Brown and Wade Woodhouse?
Starting point is 00:04:06 Come on now. Come on. Who are you taking out if you put them in the Big Ten or you put them in the SEC? I hear what you're saying. But if you were to like, if you were to put Clemson in every other conference, they wouldn't have literally half the all conference selections. If you put them in the Big 12, who's replacing any of these guys? If you put him in the big 12, you might have 15 guys instead of 11.
Starting point is 00:04:28 Sorry, Drake, Toll. Hello. I'm not arguing that 11 is normal or that we should expect this year in, year out. If they put up 11 next year, we should absolutely be bringing an alarm for, hey, we have a problem. We have an issue. However, K. Klubnick is going to be a first rounder next year. Antonio Williams is likely to be a mid-round drive guy if he decides to leave this year. year. Both of the defensive linemen I talked about going to be high first rounders next year.
Starting point is 00:04:59 Way Woodass, a little bit different in terms of the draft profile. Avia and Terrell, going to be a highly drafted guy. The offensive lineman as well, I think some of those guys have a chance to make themselves lots of money this year. But over half of these guys are going to be going next year or have the potential to be going next year. So I think that this is the perfect store of them having an amazing crew that all came back. I think that's all we're seeing here.
Starting point is 00:05:24 And it's unfamiliar to us because we're so used to the transfer portal, absolutely decimating teams to the point where, you know, you're going to lose a lot of places. And even if we're not talking about the transfer portal in terms of decimating them by guys leaving, look at Miami from last year. Cam Ward, gone, Restrepo, gone. How many guys from that team that were impact players, your leading tackler from last year, Kiko, gone.
Starting point is 00:05:48 All of those guys, if they came back, of course, you would be happy. a serious conversation about, hmm, are both of those Clemson linebackers better than Kiko? You would be having that conversation, but they're gone now. So this is a season where things just line up for Clemson in a way where they have a stacked team in comparison to the rest of the conference. Now, I do concede that if we see this become a trend where Clemson makes up half of the first team every year,
Starting point is 00:06:16 then yes, we need to have a very serious come to Jesus moment about the conference. but I don't think that one year causes for that type of concern. This is the exception, not the rule. I got to point on that in a second, but first, you know, let me go through this, the all-ACC preseason team, which is like, it's basically Clemson and a few others cherry picked in there. So quarterback, Clemson's Kate Klubnik, running back, and there's some really good running backs in this conference.
Starting point is 00:06:42 Clemson does not have either of the best, and I agree with that. Isaac Brown from Louisville, Jamal Haynes from Georgia Tech, your wide receivers, Antonio Williams and Bryant Westgo from Clemson, Chris Bell from Louisville being the third, tight end. They definitely got this one right, Justin Jolie from NC State. All purpose back is Des Reed from Pitt. Offensive tackles are Francis Maui Noah from Miami, Blake Miller from, you guessed it, Clemson. Guards are Keelan Rutledge from Georgia Tech, Walter Parks from Clemson, Center, Ryan Lenthicum from Clemson, Edge, T.J. Parker Clemson, the other edge, Rubin Bain from Miami defensive linemen are Peter Woods from Clemson and Darrell Jackson, Jr. from Florida State, who I mean, after Florida State's defense, the way they played last year, I felt like, hey, we just have to give FSU something.
Starting point is 00:07:33 And Jackson, a really talented player, but I mean, linebackers, Kyle Lewis from Pitt and the other two from Clemson, Wade, Woodhouse and Sammy Brown, Avion Tarell, who you mentioned from Clemson, one of the cornerbacks, Chandler Rivers from Duke, the other corner, Isaiah Wachobia from SMU, safety, and safety, Terry Moore from Duke being the other one. So after Clemson's 11 selections, Kenton, tied for second place, you have Louisville, Pitt, Duke, Georgia Tech, and Miami with two apiece after 11. So all this is saying, you made your argument for Clemson having 11 guys. But is it really this one? one-sided because, okay, last week at Media Days, and he got ripped to shreds for it by Paul Feinbaum and others. You know, Rhett Lashley is up at the podium talking about how, oh, the SEC is top-heavy, because they've only had six teams win a conference championship since, you know, since 1964.
Starting point is 00:08:37 You know, the ACC in recent years has been a lot of Clemson, a little bit of Florida State, and not much else, a couple random conference champions sprinkled in. And then you look at the all-ACC team and literally half of it are Clemson Tigers. So, I mean, Lashley's talking about the SEC being top heavy. The ACC looks pretty top heavy this year. But this is one year. I think that we're looking at the context of one year versus him taking it back to when Bobby Bowden was getting his first job as a head coach.
Starting point is 00:09:07 Like that's, we're looking at the ACC and we're saying, hey, Clemson has dominated in this way going back 50 years. hey, you're right. I'm not going to argue with you. You know, this is, this is exceptionally top heavy. But we're looking at a situation where SMU that was a first year team last year was just in it, where we saw a Wake Forest versus Pitt ACC championship in very recent history. I was bald by big.
Starting point is 00:09:35 So this wasn't that long ago. So, you know, we're looking at situations where, again, I'm okay with having a conversation of If this becomes the norm, Clemson is absolutely, or the rest of the conference absolutely has to do more work to catch up to Clemson. But if we're putting it in context of the Red Lashley, quote, then we're comparing one year to decades. We're comparing one year to, hey, since what year was the last time you've had somebody outside of Florida, Bama, Georgia, LSU winning? But how long has it been, you know? And Auburn, that one year with Cam Newton. who outside of those teams has gotten it done.
Starting point is 00:10:17 Can I give you a couple conspiracy theories when we come back? Oh, absolutely. I'm always down to put my tempo ahead of them. I'm not done complaining about this. And again, like, I'm not saying, I'm not saying Clemson isn't the best team in the ACC they should be. I'm not saying Clemson isn't the most talented team in the ACC, but I feel like there could be some shenanning.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Despite everything Kenton has tried to say to sway me off of this, We'll share a couple of conspiracies when we come back. You want to keep it locked right here. We're only getting started on this brand new episode of Lockdowne ACCC. If you're trying to stay on top of your routine, whether that's workouts, long days on campus, or stay in focus through back-to-back classes, hydration is where it all starts. And that's where drip drop comes in. Folks, drip drop is a doctor developed and scientifically proven for fast hydration.
Starting point is 00:11:08 It uses the perfect balance of sodium electrolytes and glucose to help your body absorb fluids, quickly delivering three times the electrolytes and half the sugar of a leading sports drink. It's hot for Kenton and North Carolina these days. It's extremely hot, humid, and sweltering for me in South Florida. Guys, I've tried a lot of electrolyte powders, but nothing tastes as good or works as fast as drip drop. The black cherry flavors, cherry lime made, those are my personal favorites. And folks, right now, drip drop is offering locked on listeners 20% off your first order. Just head to dripdrop.com and use promo code Locked on College. Starting point is 00:11:50 Stock up now before that heat hits hard. Thank you so much for making Locked on ACC your first listen. For your next listen, check out our other shows. Kenton, Gibbs, and Grayson Boone host Lockedon Wolfpack taking you through all things NC State. I host Locked on Cain's taking you all through Miami. Now, Kenton, I'm not saying that this is my conspiracy theory because I know how the voting process actually went. But this is a theory that's out there. Hey, what better way to make Clemson feel happy about maybe staying in the conference long term than showing them a little extra preseason
Starting point is 00:12:24 love. Guys, you want any player nominated for all ACC, you got it. We'll give you literally half the conference. That's the comments coming from a lot of ACC fans. You're muted. Let me tell you about something that ACC lobby is always trying to silence me here. But let me tell you about something that I would tell the ACC if that were the case. We have played these games before. We've played them before. Donald, do you remember what team got added into the ACC during COVID because they needed a place to play? Notre Dame.
Starting point is 00:13:01 And do you remember who ended up winning defensive player that year that year, despite having a statistically worse season by every single metric than a fellow linebacker by the name of Peyton Wilson from Riley North Carolina or who played in Riley, North Carolina. Well, I know somebody from Notre Dame. Jeremiah, J.O.K, I can't remember the last two parts of his name, but outside linebacker from Notre Dame. Again, they played the same position and Peyton Wilson beat him in literally every statistical measure tackles, tackles for loss, sacks, intercept, everything,
Starting point is 00:13:37 he beat J.O.K. And yet J.O.K. gets player to you. We've seen it. We've seen it. We seen the ACC begging and groveling to a team please love me pick me choose me by giving them all of the awards and we lost so if that is i'm not going to say i'm not going to dismiss that as hall watch i'll give you a little bit of legitimacy there and say that i could i could see a world with that's feasible but if that world is here the ac cc have got to be the biggest idiots of all time because in the words of former president George Bush, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice. You can't get food again.
Starting point is 00:14:18 Okay. We've gotten food again if this is the case. But also, if that was the case, you'd probably see more than one Florida state player. You'd probably see more than zero North Carolina tar heels because that's become a hot rumor, right? I mean, North Carolina does not have a single player on this list, not one. So, yeah, you'd probably see a little bit more of that. I did, though, I'll tell you this, Ken, I did notice something that rubbed me a little bit the wrong way when I was going through the ballot.
Starting point is 00:14:51 And, like, you know, people know you see my background on YouTube. Obviously, I'm a Miami guy and I'm the Miami guy on this network. But I really tried to approach my ballot with as little bias as possible. I think there is some natural bias. that comes into it because I, you know, just naturally for my job, I watch Miami players closer than I watch anybody else. So there may be some natural bias that comes into it, but I try not to go too crazy with it. So I didn't vote, you know, straight up Miami guys all through my ticket or anything like that. I voted for a lot of Clemson players, okay? But I did notice something
Starting point is 00:15:25 of those digital ballots that we were filling out. Like not every player, not every starter was even available for selection. I, you know, I noticed. You noticed that. I noticed that. I noticed that that was a thing. Like, don't, don't you kind of manipulate towards a certain bias. And listen, I wouldn't necessarily have voted for this player for all team, for all ACC team. But I'm really bullish on Miami's starting left tackle, Markell Bell, 6 foot 9, 340, got a
Starting point is 00:15:57 lot of quality experience last year, kind of moved into a full-time starter year. He's going to get an opportunity to be the full-time starter this year. I was talking with Rubin Bain the other day. he says it's really hard to get her. Like I'm still trying to figure out. He said how to get around Markell because his wingspan is so crazy long. So again, like I wasn't expecting him to be a tackle selection on the all-ACC team. My man wasn't on the ballot.
Starting point is 00:16:20 Like not even available for selection. So that's another way to kind of manipulate this. If you've got, you know, a ballot that doesn't even include all the starting players in the conference at that position, you can steer the results in a certain direction. I wholeheartedly agree. and even beyond the starters, there are certain backups that need a consideration. If Watson was on here for running back, I'm not saying he's better than Jamal Haynes. I'm not saying I'm a thousand percent.
Starting point is 00:16:46 He would have got my vote over Jamal Haynes. But I'm saying there's a conversation to be had. There's a conversation there. So I do agree and I understand that the way that you had a limited amount of people you could vote for, that was a little interesting because in the past, generally, we got starters from teams where I'm like, That guy sticks. He's terrible. I know he couldn't block me.
Starting point is 00:17:10 And I haven't gotten off a good pass rush in about a decade now. And he was a starter. He's an incumbent. So he ends up on the ballot. So I get what you're saying. I have 1,000% feel where you're coming from. Again, I'm not going to dismiss it as hogwash if there is any legitimacy to it. And this one, I've seen it with my own two eyes.
Starting point is 00:17:32 There were legitimately starters that were left off. Yeah, yeah. No doubt about that. So do you feel like anyone was underrepresented? Because, like, we think SMU is going to be pretty good this year. They only had one selection, Wachobia. You know, North Carolina, zero guys on the list. A lot of teams, Boston College, Wake Forest, Virginia had zero on the list.
Starting point is 00:17:56 Do you think anybody was snubbed from this? I'm pretty sure, you know, the only one that I would say, I think that he needed a better look than maybe. he got. Kiela Rutledge, baller, dog. He, to me,
Starting point is 00:18:11 is one of the best offensive linemen in the conference. Walker Parks, perhaps he needs to get switched out with the guard from Stanford,
Starting point is 00:18:20 who was a menace last year, despite playing on a very bad team. I was shocked that he stuck around at Stanford despite the fact
Starting point is 00:18:30 that they have a coaching turnover change, they have a one-year coach, everybody, All of his boys left. All of his boys left him out. They say, hey, man, we leave it.
Starting point is 00:18:40 We're going to get the bag. We're going to play competitive football. And he's stuck around the step back. But he was a guy that PFF ranks him as one of the best. I mean, if you watch the film, even when playing against NC State last year, they got dominated. That was one of their worst games of the season. But even still, I kind of watched him like, oh, man, when he gets his hands on guys,
Starting point is 00:18:59 he moves some furniture around. So I was surprised that he wasn't on this list. but with that being said, that's probably the only snub that I looked at and I was like, I think that he would have deserved some consideration here. But again, I can understand Walker Parks being. I can understand. The ACC's got good guards because I also felt like Annes Cooper at Miami who plays next to Maui, Noah doesn't get enough respect.
Starting point is 00:19:25 So I think there's probably like four or five guards who could have gotten consideration in this conference for the two spots that they gave out. So, and listen, and I will, I know we've spent the last, however many minutes, you know, ranting, well, mostly me ranting about the preseason all-ACC selections. The postseason ones are the ones that really matter. Hello. Hello. Results matter more than predictions. But coming up next, so there has been a challenge.
Starting point is 00:19:56 And there, you know, so this is a concession that has been made to try to avoid lengthy courtroom battles. after that House versus NCAA settlement, NIL collectives will not be dying today. We'll explain why. You want to keep it locked right here, unlocked on ACCC. Folks, game time is the only ticket app that Kenton and I use because we're getting the best prices

Ryan Smith does an incredible job breaking down all things, NIL, transfer portal, recruiting. So, Kenton, we have an NIL related story.
Starting point is 00:21:43 So the guidance that had initially come out on July 10th from the College Sports Commission, which is the new enforcement arm of college sports, college sports, college sports, which basically does the dirty work now with enforcement that the NCAA no longer wants to do, basically said, like, yeah, collectives cannot pay players directly. anymore. That, you know, third-party NIL deals have to be from these legitimate businesses. They were basically trying to completely kill collectives. And so in the weeks that followed that, the collectives, which for the past, you know, four years, had been the primary source of paying players NIL money and schools around the country have powerful NIL collectives. I'm wearing a hat
Starting point is 00:22:26 for the Miami collective, Kane's Connection today. And so basically they were facing an existential crisis. They lawyered up. Tom Mars, who's like a famous, you know, litigator, was working with them. And it doesn't seem like they're going to go to court now, at least not anytime soon, because the CSC has clarified their stance on collectives. This is from Yahoo Sports. While the statement notes that traditional NIL collective pay-for-play deals, pay-for-play being the emphasis, remain prohibited, the change in approach paves the way for collectives to pay athletes directly still, if those deals satisfy three benchmarks. Number one, deliver the public a good or service.
Starting point is 00:23:07 Number two, turn a profit beyond paying athletes. That's going to be tricky. And three, fall within a Deloitte-created compensation range standard to the CSE's NILGO submission platform. So, all right, so the thing is like, so you have to show that you are providing, like, advertising for goods and services that are creating a profit. it can't be the strictly pay for play, which when I first read that, I'm like, well, still, like, how can collectives exist then? So here's the further clarification, Kenton, according to Ross Dellinger. This provides a path for collectives to hold an assortment of events to pay athletes,
Starting point is 00:23:44 including merchandise sales, autograph signings, and athlete appearances, for example, at golf tournaments. So that's going to be the way collectives now have to operate. They can exist, but their existence is a lot trickier than it used to be. I see it like this. They're trying to close Pandora's box, which, Dono, it's famously easy to close. That is why it's the reference for whenever you want to reclose something, you call it a Pandora's box because it's, you know, when it's open, you just, oh, little love tap, you know, like the new soccer mom vans and all that.
Starting point is 00:24:18 You just tap the top and it just rolls on down and close the tap the top of the hatch when it's open and it closes. This is foolishness. This is foolishness. what can any of these companies or what can any of these metrics actually do? What can Deloitte do to say, oh, this is the approved amount because of this reason? What can they do to say, oh, this business is not returning a legitimate profit based on what we think. How many startups don't return profits? I work in the startup environment.
Starting point is 00:24:47 Do you know how many of them, despite raising hundreds of millions of dollars, never get profitable? Like that's it's part of the deal as a business venture, especially this type of business venture where you know, hey, we're not, we're not going to turn a profit here. That's that's not what we're going to do. And even beyond that, what is the good or service to the public? How do you define that? What do you? If fans say we paid $5 a piece and got to shake CJ Bailey's hand or we got to see them in person, if they feel like that's, satisfying to them.
Starting point is 00:25:24 What does it mean if every, if $4.50 of every $5 that was paid in, go to him? If fans say, hey, I want to go see Kiko Maenoa scene. We're going to hand him a, you know, we're going to hand him a banjo and he's going to see this. I feel like there's a business. Instead of, instead of karaoke, Kiko Yoki or something. There you go.
Starting point is 00:25:43 There's a business there. If they want to do Kiko Yoki, what are we going to do? If they want to do CC Yoki, what are we going to do to say, Oh, C.C. Loki isn't turning a profit. We can't do it. We can't pay them. If people want to pay the money,
Starting point is 00:26:00 and these players have shown themselves to be at that level where millions of dollars worth of ad revenue are generated, guess what's going to happen? People are going to find a way to do it. If people want to pay these players and people feel like, seeing Kane's win means I'm going to give the Kane connection, what are you going to do to stop it? What are you going to do?
Starting point is 00:26:22 oh, we'll put in rules to make it stop happening forever. All is going to happen is all of these players are going to go back to finding religion, and we're going to have the SEC winning 80% of national championships again. That's all that's going to happen. That's all. Now, there's another thing, which is just being pointed out left and right. There is this massive hypocrisy when the college sports commission refers to pay for play and we're trying to rid college sports at pay for play.
Starting point is 00:26:49 Because, okay, they're trying to do that through, you know, limiting these third-party NIL deals. But Kenton, this new revenue sharing, it's literally pay-for-play. So they completely ignore that your revenue-sharing agreements are determined by your status on the roster to be eligible for revenue sharing, and then how valuable you are to that program is going to determine how big your cut of the pie and how much you're making. That sounds like pay-for-play to me. So they're okay with pay for play when it comes to the $20.5 million budget.
Starting point is 00:27:24 But God forbid, pay for play becomes a factor with third party deals. I'm going to say it, and I'm going to say it out loud. We need to stop using pay for play as a pejority. That's what it should be. These young men are being compensated because they play well. What it is. I'm sorry. Do it.
Starting point is 00:27:43 Donald, with all due respect, by the way, I got my drip drop. it's actually a really good product. I work out five days a week, go to run club three times a week outside of that five times a week. You're hydrated all the time. I actually am, Donno. I actually feel more hydrated and less tired than I used to before I start using drip drop. But what would we do if somebody said we're not trying to pay Donald and Kenson on a pod for pay basis? We want to make sure that if they are getting paid by drip drop, drip drop has to be generating a profit.
Starting point is 00:28:16 I just think that it is insane. It is flatly asinine to keep using paper plans if it's this dirty, bad word. I don't give a rats behind. Guess what? These players are, everybody used to tell us in high school when we were playing football. Only 1% of you all will go on to play at the college level, particularly FBS. It becomes even smaller. Now, granted, I went to a high school where those numbers are a little skewed because we're a little bit of a football firehouse.
Starting point is 00:28:46 but you still knew you are the exception. You are the exception. If these players are exceptionally talented, they deserve to be exceptionally compensated. In no part of the world can you say that Jeff Bezos has done something so exceptional on his own merit that warrants him to have $50 million to buy out an entire city to host his wedding. But because of our economic system, we believe, hey, you know what? Actually, you have.
Starting point is 00:29:16 You have. We're not going to regulate your money away. So why is it that these players are getting their money regulated away? When Nick Saban had his clause that he was top three in, top through the SEC, top five nationally, nobody stepped in and say, wait, wait, wait, you're not providing a good or service to the public that's worth this. We're not doing pay for coach.
Starting point is 00:29:37 When Kirk Herbst and Reese Davis getting that booth, nobody says you're talking about amateurs. We are not giving y'all pay for broadcast. That's insane, actually. We're not going to do that. We will give you free college credits to whatever school you want to go to. I'm fine with either allowing both or taking both. But I'm not fine with allowing one and taking one.
Starting point is 00:29:58 I'm not fine. I'm fine with all these college coaches being the highest paid state employees in all the states that they're in. I'm fine with that. I'm not fine with them being the highest paid employees and then looking at the players upon whose backs they generate the revenue and saying, oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, buddy. what are you doing?
Starting point is 00:30:16 Why would we pay you beyond a scholarship? What? No, again, if we want to pay everybody in just what they earn in TV revenue and what is, you know, college courses and all that, sure, let all these coaches get their doctorates, let all these coaches get there, go to med school, do whatever you want to do,
Starting point is 00:30:38 and then go into a more look at a career. But if we're going to have a situation where we're telling players, the only money that you can get paid is $600 or else we're going to put you under the magnifying list. I don't think that Affleck had that agreement with saving. I don't think they have that with Dion Sanders. So, you know, for me personally, either make it fair for all and everybody get paid or nobody get paid. Amen to that.
