On this loaded episode, CBS has predicted the first loss for every team in the ACC.
Some of your seasons might be over before they even started, apparently.
we'll talk about the AP poll, which came out today here on Monday, which it actually looks
shockingly similar to the coach's poll, but there is a minor difference with Clemson.
But, you know, Kenton, is this, do you think this is the lead here?
Andy Staples, who does a tremendous job at On3Sports.com, you know, he's, I think one of the
better national college football voices out there.
he is put out, and we'll talk about how he defines this,
but he put out his list of college football blue bloods.
On this list, KG, you've got Alabama, it's a no-brainer,
you got Florida State, that's your first ACC representative.
You got Georgia, you got LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Miami makes the cut.
More on that in a minute.
Notre Dame, Tennessee, Ohio State, Texas Longhorns, and USC.
schools who just missed the cut, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Nebraska, and Penn State.
So, Kent, does Clemson have a legitimate gripe in being left off this list or the fact that
they haven't been truly a national powerhouse until last decade and a half?
Does that disqualify them from the Blue Blood conversation?
Well, I want to know, how is it fair that Clemson is out, but so isn't a
I'm confused by this because if you're looking back at the history of it, Nebraska had some of the greatest football teams ever assembled.
And I know, I know everybody in today's day and age is saying, oh, well, if you tried to run that VR office,
if you tried to run that option foolishness against these defenses, they destroy it.
Let me let you all in on the secret, okay?
The greatest offensive system of all time, I'm going to let you in on it.
And it's also the greatest defensive system all the time.
A lot of people don't know this.
The same offense and defense.
I don't know what you're thinking.
How does that exist?
Offensive defense don't run the same scheme.
The best scheme is the one where you have all the best players.
That's the best scheme.
Okay.
If you have the best players, it doesn't matter what scheme you run,
they will figure out, oh, we're bigger, stronger, and faster than those guys.
I think we'll do it a little bit better.
I think we'll get to end zone a little bit better.
So I look at Nebraska not being on it, and I say, okay, they haven't had success in recent history.
I'm fine with them.
I'm completely fine with that.
But then you leave Clemson off, and they've had recent success in history to a degree which none of these teams on this list except Alabama and Georgia can claim.
That's it.
Right.
That's it.
In the last 15 years, and how back are we, how far back are we going to claim blue blood status?
Because the criteria, or I'm sorry.
I'll save the criteria for utilist here.
But the criteria are, for the most part, met by Clemson.
And the only ones that they don't, it's a little, you know,
it's a little herky jerky to say that that counts against them all time.
It's, you know, it's just a really unfortunate situation that they're not viewed as a blue blood.
Because, again, if we're talking historical relevance, then Nebraska needs to be in.
And if we're talking historical relevance with who's doing it now, people forget,
Clemson's first national championship was in 81.
81.
That was when our first one was.
How old were you in 81, Dono?
I was negative three.
And how dare you think I was already born in 1981?
How dare you?
I'm sorry, Donna.
You got a house now.
You're your second house.
You know, us millennials, we can't relate to being on our first one yet.
But you get the point.
This is absolutely astounding that you leave off Clemson.
Because, again, they are dominating and they have.
a championship that goes back further than when you were bored and you are about house number two
and trip to Italy number twelfth. I think that it's fair to say that they belong in there.
And I think that they belong in there. Now, Andy, and this is not going to stop people from yelling
at Andy Staples. I see it happening on social media. People are loudly yelling at him.
Clemson fans, a lot of Florida fans, a lot of Penn State fans are very upset. He doesn't
consider them blue bloods. Now, he was able to.
to create some plausible deniability here by pointing out this is not strictly based on his opinion.
And in fact, Andy Staples is a gator guy. So if it was strictly based on his opinion, he would have
found a way to put Florida in. So he created a formula, Kenton. Now, him creating a bit of a
mathematical formula doesn't mean we have to agree with it the way he defines a blue blood.
But here's his criteria. Top 15 in program.
win percentage, minimum 750 games. So you have to be top 15 in win percentage. And the other
criteria, at least one national title in two of three eras, AP or coaches pull in the two
eras winner of the final game in the college football playoff or college football
playoff era. So obviously not all the programs have each of those criteria. But you have to have
at least two out of the three and you have to be top 15 in win percentage. So I mean,
Andy basically can step back and say, don't yell at me.
This is my formula.
These are the teams that made it and these are the ones who didn't.
And here's the thing.
This is why when you have these conversations, when you have these opinionated things,
it is oftentimes much more art than science.
Because when you break it down to only science, do you know where both Clemson and Florida rank in terms of all-time winning percentage?
I don't.
20 and 21.
Clemson has a championship
in the
poll error. Or was that
before the poll error? Was 81 before?
Well, yeah. Well, but in 81, I'm not
sure. Either way. Either way.
They have a championship in two errors.
They have a championship in two errors. They have a
championship in two errors, but they are slightly
outside of that window for, oh,
they don't have a national championship for this regard.
So, you know, they can't get in here.
It's unfortunate to see that.
And then the other thing that I find quite interesting,
if it's top 15 of all time,
why is LSU on this list?
LSU's winning percentage is not top 15 all time.
They're number 16 right behind
Kennesaw State.
Kennesaw State known blue blood.
Exactly.
But you get the point.
And even if you're saying, oh, well, we're only taking 750 FBS games, that's fine.
That's fine.
I'm not against that.
Whatever.
My whole thing here is when you relegate things to such strict science, you leave out the art portion of it where you say, you know what?
The science says this.
But the art tells me the science does not make sense here.
All right.
So do you have arguments against either, do you have any against either of the two A.
teams who made it. Obviously, Florida State has a somewhat recent national championship in
addition to a great history. They won the title in 2013, you know, won titles in the 80s and
90s. I don't think there's any argument that Florida State is in and should be in.
What about Miami? I'm ready to argue with you if you want to. Here's the thing, Donald.
Put your arguing glasses down, old man. Put them down. Put it down. You know, take them off.
because I don't think there's an argument for either one of these teams to not be blue bloods.
You cannot write the story of college football.
To me, that is the essence of a blue blood.
If I cannot write the story of college football without talking about your team,
if I had to pick five or six random years,
just a random five to six year sampling of, hey,
this is what was going on in college football,
what is the likelihood that I snatch your team up
and they have something important to say in this?
And I'll tell you what, as much as this may pain them to hear, Florida State fans,
your two and ten season further solidified your blue bloodsets.
It further solidified it.
You know why?
You know why?
No other team could have that much hype in that disastrous of a season.
And that's not a joke.
That's not me being facetious.
You literally cannot write the story of the ACC without saying this team that was
picked to finish their champion.
Only got one conference win.
That type of stuff, I know people hate making bad history.
I'm a Lions fan.
I was there for Owen 16.
I know people hate making bad history.
But bad history is still what, Dono?
History.
It's still history.
So at the end of the day, that's where I sit.
Florida State, Miami, both belong.
Miami, you damn sure came right.
The story of college football without Miami and all those great teams,
without Snellenberger and the boys,
without Jimmy Johnson and all that he did.
And you also, again, take a random five-year sampling,
you're going to find a moment where Miami flubbed it up in a major way.
If you go any time outside of those windows,
where it was like, hey, Miami should probably be the favorites, right?
They should probably be on place to win a championship.
And then you look up and you're like, no, no, they didn't get it done.
So I don't think either one of those teams are wrong to be in that group.
So even though you didn't argue against Miami, let me give my counterpoints because I know people in the comments will. Okay.
Absolutely.
Miami national champions in three different decades, multiple different eras, multiple in the 80s, 90s, 2000s.
2001 was arguably the greatest college football team of all time, especially when you consider the number of pro bowlers and pro football Hall of Famers that came out of 2001 team.
Miami all time has the fourth most pro football hall of famers out of any program in America,
which is pretty incredible.
And I believe the six most NFL pro bowlers out of any college team in America.
So to me, the proof is in the pudding, not to mention I think your argument is great.
You can't write the history of college football without Miami.
And folks, even when Miami has been down a lot of recent years, you throw up the you.
That's still a universal language that's.
speaks to people even in other countries about college football.
Let me tell you something.
Yeah, go ahead.
I grew up in Detroit, Michigan on the west side, okay?
We played football in the Midwest, in the, one of the highest points in America, okay?
Share a border with Canada type deal, right?
And yet, one of our defensive play calls, we specifically threw up a U.
We specifically did that.
We have one for the U, we have one for Oregon.
Some players would say it's Ohio State.
I don't like nothing about the state Ohio, so we claimed it was Oregon.
But we had multiple calls that were based on very, very big time blue blood brands.
And then you ended up in there.
We had a call for Michigan, it was Wolverine and all that.
We had calls, and Miami was one of them.
So to me, growing up and being a guy that wanted to wear 99 because of Warren South,
you can't remove them from blue blood status.
All right.
So Miami also got some love in the AP poll, which came out today.
And Clemson got more love from the AP than they did from the coaches.
And I think the AP got it right with them.
You want to keep it locked right here.
We'll talk about the debut AP poll when we come back on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC.

Locked on ACC your first listen for your next listen. Check out our other shows. Kent and Gibbs and
Grayson Boone do an awesome job hosting Locked on Wolfpack talking everything NC State. I host Locked on
Cains talking to all things Miami. All right. So KG, let's take a look see at the debut AP top 25,
which Miami and SMU are unchanged compared to the coaches poll. Miami at number 10. So they crack the top
10 in both polls. SMU 16 in both polls. But here's the difference from an ACC point of view.
AP voters like Clemson a little bit more than the coaches poll does, having Clemson at number
four, where the coaches poll had Clemson or has Clemson at number six behind five Notre Dame
and four, Georgia, where here the top five is Texas, Penn State over Ohio State. We got to
circle back to that. Then Clemson at number four, Georgia at number five.
You, Kenton, honestly, I think on paper, Clemson Tigers are a top five team.
So I think the AP voters got it right.
I don't see how you could put Clemson outside the top five.
And I'm being very serious about that.
Who would you say belongs in the top five over them and based on what?
If we're based on what we've seen, if we're basing this on what we've seen in the past,
Clemson has more returning production than anybody.
If you're basing it on the quarterback position,
Clemson has a guy that's number three in Heismanauts.
If you're basing it on, well, the things that travel,
run game and defense, sure.
Clemson does not have a proven run game.
Absolutely.
Defense, you're going to tell me Peter Wood and T.J. Parker,
and Wade Woodhouse, and Sandy Brown, and Avion Terrell,
ain't proven.
You're going to tell me that group ain't proven?
You're going to tell me help from Purdue ain't proven?
Let me tell you something.
That one, he looked like the only young man on the boiler makers last year
that was not an accountant or a future get ready to learn enterprise rental car guy.
And you mean to tell me that that team is going to be one that I don't look at and say,
I would just say, what's your rationale?
What's your rationale?
Because any time you have to put somebody over somebody else, explain the rationale to me,
and if it makes sense, I can hear you out.
But again, the team that's returned in most production with one of the top quarterbacks in the nation,
with one of the best defenses in the nation,
It's hard for you to sell me on, hey, that team is not one of the best five.
Again, no team is perfect.
No team.
Nobody's bringing the 85 bears out there this year.
And even 85 bears could not throw the ball very well.
But it was a different time back then, right?
So, you know, I look at this and I say, what can you ask of Clemson that you could not say, oh, that you can say they can't do this.
but every other team can do that in space and they can do all the things, Clemson.
I struggle to find it.
Something that actually bodes well for Clemson, Penn State, inside that top four compared to a lot of the teams in the top seven, eight is experience at the quarterback position.
I mean, I know you and I are not all that high on Drew Aller, but they have stability and continuity there at Penn State.
Clemson has stability and continuity with Cade Clubnick, whereas, you know, Texas, they got a quarterback with Manning as his last name, Uber talented.
But we haven't seen Arch do it for a full season or anywhere close to a full season.
Ohio State, we haven't seen Julian Say and do it.
You know, I know that they're very high there in Georgia on their new quarterback.
I don't know why his name is escaping me.
I talk about him all the time.
Gunner Stockton.
They've done it for more than a couple of games, right?
I mean, we're not even sure who Notre Dame's quarterback.
Notre Dame should be an awesome football team this year.
We're not even sure who their quarterback is going to be at this point between Minchie and C.J.
Carr.
So at least like that, that to me, advantage for teams like Clemson and Penn State that you know exactly what you're getting from the most important position in football for a lot of these other teams you don't.
Exactly.
And even if you go throughout the entire top 10,
the only teams that are returning their quarterbacks are Penn State, Clemson, LSU,
and that's it.
That's it.
Everybody else, brand new quarterback, Longhorns, brand new quarterback,
Buckeyes, brand new quarterback, bulldogs, brand new quarterback,
even if you want to say, well, some of those guys have played reps with the ones,
sure, but by and large, have you been responsible for an entire season?
When teams are game planning against you and what you like to throw?
in week nine. Have you seen that? No. None of you have. Oh, okay. So, you know, like you said,
it bodes well for the, the Tigers, because they're returning so much talent. They're returning all
of these things. And again, what other team can you say definitively if we lined it up and Clemson
them were to play tomorrow, I'd feel good about bed my mortgage on the other team.
Yeah, that's right. I don't think there's a.
single team in the nation. That to me
spells out top five. There are
multiple teams. If you told me,
Bemma's going to line up against this team tomorrow. Oh,
baby, take out a second mortgage. Put that thing
down on this squad. There are multiple
teams like that. There are multiple teams if you
tell me, oh, Notre Dame is going to play
this team. And Notre Dame is a really good team.
Half-ACC Notre Dame.
We see you. We acknowledge
you as one of ours, even though you
don't want to be all the time.
There are multiple teams like I said about.
Clemson, no such team.
It's just.
Now, you know, one of the big changes between the AP and the coaches poll is flipping number two and number three.
So the coaches had Ohio State number two, Penn State number three.
The AP flipped that around.
And I know I just talked about quarterback stability.
Penn State has it.
Ohio State doesn't.
But Kenton, I'm still, I'm taking the defending national champs and I'm taking the team with Jeremiah Smith.
I actually, if I were doing this poll, I would have Ohio State at number three.
one despite the change in quarterback.
I mean, do you, do you agree with the AP having Penn State ranked ahead of Ohio State?
Here's the thing.
Jeremiah Smith is a phenom.
He's phenomenal.
He is terrifying.
He's nightmare fuel for defensive coordinators.
He may not be the best player on that team.
They've got a safety over there by the name of came down.
Downs.
And let me tell you something.
I have not seen a safety who can do more and do.
do it well since the Honey Badger.
That's the last time I saw a guy who could do all the things.
And here's a fun fact, he doesn't return kicks like the Honey Badger did.
So what does that mean?
Everything that he does do, it's a little bit higher of a level.
He's a little bit more consistent of a tackler.
He's a little bit better in Mancovers.
That kid is, I don't see why you wouldn't want to bet on him.
but I do get the idea that Penn State,
it's the sheer overwhelming volume of stars they have.
It's the sheer overwhelming volume of you have what Auburn had back in the day,
a backfield where everybody is liable to go first round.
You're going to line up three guys in the backfield.
And it's like, oh, first rounder, first rounder, first rounder,
possibly number one overall pick in your quarterback,
which I don't agree with.
I'm putting my stake in the ground right now for that.
I don't agree that he's the number one over our pick.
But what I do know is he will end up being that if he has a good season here because
he's got all the tools.
He's a tousy guy, Donnell.
And you know, Anthony Richardson got drafted early.
So a guy that's a more developed passer than he is, not quite the athlete, but a much
more developed passer that's, you know, in the same stratosphere, even though he's by far lower
as an athlete, he'll have a shot to go first if everything goes well for him this year.
So I understand the argument for either one at two or three.
I really, the only one that confuses me is Texas at number one.
That's the one that has been scratching my head a little bit.
Well, I get it.
I get it.
I understand that y'all believe in Arch.
I understand backfield, they got a couple good backs over there.
I'm not mad at that.
You're losing your top receivers, all of your top receivers,
and your starting quarterback from last year.
With all due respect, the guy is walking in,
his last name may be Manning,
but we saw him ball against the mighty ULM Warholms.
Woo-wee!
If you could put up numbers on Warhol football,
hey, blue blood and new blood those Warholts.
You know, so I look at that and say,
I'm confused as to why they're number one,
but again, you know, I get it.
Voters don't really take their duty so seriously sometimes.
But, you know, I don't,
rationing Texas at number one is something that, again,
I get it.
Defensively, you've got some absolute studs over there.
You've got a potential number one pick on that side
and that lineback for Hill, I believe, is the last name.
But still, I'm looking at them like, do you have enough?
Secondary was phenomenal last year.
McCuba was a big part of that.
No longer with the program in the NFL now.
How do you replace me?
You know, I'm interested now.
Now, we have multiple top 10 matches week one.
A couple of those involve ACC teams, in fact.
So one that doesn't is number one, Texas against number three, Ohio State.
It would be number one and number two based on the other poll.
Clemson, number four, against number nine, LSU, and number six, Notre Dame against number 10, Miami.
So I'm sure people will say, hey, the voters manipulated it to create all these top 10 matchups.
But, I mean, the coaches had it virtually the same way.
So I don't know if the coaches are on the take, but Kenton, no matter what, we're going to have.
So this has got to be one of the better week ones, I think, in recent memory based on all these big matchups we got.
Oh, you're absolutely right.
Anybody who's saying this ain't one of the better week ones is lying to themselves because we have a loaded, a star study.
I mean absolutely pat with talent week one, even if you take away the rankings, even if you say, hey, just based on where these guys are going to get drafted, do we have a lot of star?
power playing. Guess what?
Guess what? Mr. Manning, who everybody
said, oh, he's leaving next year
and he's going to be the number one pick. Well,
first of all, granddaddy said, no,
he's standing college. We don't got to go nowhere
no time soon. And number two,
there are multiple first rounders
on that Texas team. We talk about Jeremiah
Smith. He's going to have to go up
against some ball players there
in Texas. We talk about Caleb Downs. He's going
to have to tackle some NFL backs
in that game there. So, you know, you've got that
one going. You've got a ton of other good ones
going Clemson, LSU, talk about NFL talent everywhere.
You're going to have a duel of two quarterbacks that some money is to be made for both
them.
Some money is right there on the table for both of them.
And of course, T.J.
Parker, Peter Woods and company, you've got a ton.
When I say a ton, I mean a ton.
LSU always loaded your receivers as they are.
This is a very interesting matchup to see there.
And I'm very intrigued by that one as well.
This week one, and mind you, I'm just scratching the surface.
I just talked about the two big names.
games. There are so many more to be included. I'm excited for it.
Well, coming up next, CBS sports already spoiled the ACC football season. They're telling you
exactly when all 17 ACC teams will suffer their first loss of the year, especially we're
curious about Clemson, Miami. When are they going to lose for the first time? You want to keep
it locked right here. We're not done yet on locked on ACC. By the way, for your next listen,
make sure you check out the portal.
Our good friend Brian Smith does an incredible job breaking down the transfer portal,
NIL and all the storylines that come with that and recruiting,
which is always busy this time of year.
Make sure you check out the portal.
It's part of the Lockdown family, and it's available free wherever you get your podcast
and free on YouTube.
All right.
So Kenton, would you like to know, according to CBS Sports?
This is a cool story that they put out.
Would you like to know when Miami is going to lose for the first time?
this season.
I'm going to guess they said it's to Notre Dame, but.
Yeah.
We're not going to have to wait very long, apparently.
Well, I'll tell you this much.
This is why you play the games, right?
I mean, you're looking at two teams that have a virtual, I would say, complete opposite
problems in terms of what you're looking at with, hey, Notre Dame is a team.
Everywhere is set except your quarterback position.
you don't know who the guy's going to be and the passing game last year very wonky very out of whack and all like this stuff
Miami on the other hand is paying a guy four million dollars who's a national champion he's a guy that has played some very quality ball against the best competition there is so you know the question comes up for them can he just stay healthy enough or is he back healthy enough to get things going and is the receiving talent good enough to not mimic what you saw last
year because you're not expecting Cam Ward.
They're not expecting number one pick.
You're not expecting number one offense at America this year,
but you are expecting something serviceable if you're going to beat teams like Notre Dame.
And really, I'd say above serviceable, you're going to need a good passing game.
Not great, not elite, not, hey, this is world beating.
Nobody can do anything with it.
But you're going to at least have to be good to where this is like, may not be our strength,
may not be our bread and butter, but we can do it effectively for a majority of the time.
Yeah, for Miami, Notre Dame comes to Hard Rock Stadium in South Florida, and Notre Dame, they're favored by two and a half points on the road.
So expecting the game to be close, according to the odds, and I expect to be close as well.
For all the reasons you talked about it, we'll talk more about that game as it gets closer.
But, you know, CBS predicting Miami to lose that game, it's not surprising.
Would you like to guess when they have Clemson suffering their first loss of the year?
Don't tell me to Dallas you.
Don't say that.
No, it's not.
Is it a television?
Okay, okay.
I'm going to get South Carolina then.
Yes, you're right.
South Carolina.
I mean, they, and that's on the road, I believe, this year.
Because South Carolina, I think, beat them in Clemson last year.
It's a big revenge game for Clemson.
They should, I mean, South Carolina is a good football team.
Clemson should be better than them.
So that that's when they have, they got Clemson going 11 and O to start the year
and then losing that rivalry game.
You want to talk about quarterbacks of money to be made, Cade and Lenores.
Oh, yeah.
Boy, I'm telling you, it's some millions walking out on that field for both of them.
But Donald, I think that's very interesting because if they get to 11 and all,
I think that that Palmetto Bowl, oh, boy, that is going to be the stuff of legend.
That is going to be the stuff of where Davosweeney definitively plants his flag once again,
because he's already done.
Let's make it clear.
I'm not saying dabbo needs a career defining moment,
but I'm saying this will be dabbo act too,
dabble with the portal moment to say,
hey, by the way, y'all aren't us and we aren't y'all.
We are different from you.
We are better than you to South Carolina.
Let me give you one more.
We can do more of these later in the week.
How about your NC State Wolfpack?
Do you want to get this?
This was a little harder.
When they have NC State losing for the,
first time this year.
All right.
I'm going to assume that they got them beating ECU.
I'm going to assume they got them beating Virginia.
I'm going to assume they got them beating what?
Duke.
Is it Duke?
It's Duke.
They got them losing.
There we go.
I'm going to tell you.
Duke has been phenomenal these past couple years.
It makes a lot of sense.
Like I've always said, nobody disguises their defenses like Manny Diaz.
And even with another year of experience and having played them last year, I can see why that
would be a problem for NC State.
If Mensai is catching heat by then,
if him and the boys are starting to jail by then,
I can see what that would be a problem against the secondary that,
I mean,
had a mass exodus at 1159 in the portal during the winter window.
I could see why that would be a problem.
You know,
I could definitely see a world where Duke wins that game.
That's not a huge surprise for me as an NC state guy looking at that.
But please beat them boys, man.
Yeah.
You know, I don't want to see you lose the Duke again.
And, you know, their stadium when they play Notre Dame, undefeated, beat clips in the start
the season off.
I believe they're about four and over five minutes and the state's still half in.
I understand that the Cameron Crazies are naturally going to be a smaller group because
Cameron indoors very small.
But you need to convert yourselves to Wade Wackowls.
You need to convert yourself to Will Wade, I mean to the Wade Warriors.
Wallace Wade, yeah.
The Wallace Wade Warriors.
That's what you need to get.
merchant yourselves, too, okay? Because you're putting out a great football product in Durham,
and it needs to be respected. Trey Oliver is the only coach getting love in Durham, and he coached
North Carolina Central. You need to do something, Duke. Oh, I love it. Fantastic Times is always here
with Kent and Gibbs. By the way, if, for the ACC fans out there, if you're angry that your team was
not named a Blue Blood by Andy Staples, tell us why in the comment. If you're angry that your team didn't
make the top 25. I mean, I think I think Louisville fans have a little bit of a gripe.
Let us know in the comments how you feel about that.
