Starting point is 00:00:00 So you thought the ACC settlement was going to keep things together until at least 2030, right? Well, one of the top news outlets that covers Florida State thinks it's going to break up a lot sooner than that. You are locked on ACC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference. Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. And if this thing were to break up in a couple of years, We would really have to go back and say, what were Jim Phillips and the ACC legal team doing exactly when they agreed to that settlement? We are locked on ACC. Thank you so much for making us your first listen and your first watch today.
Starting point is 00:00:50 We're available free wherever you get your podcast. We're free on YouTube. We're part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Today's episode is brought to you by the all-new 2025 Nissan Armada. Stay with us for the Armada team of the week later in this episode. I am Alex Dono from Lockdown Caines. He is Kenton Gibbs from Lockdown Wolfpack. NC State has a new head basketball coach.
Starting point is 00:01:13 So does UVA. We'll talk about all that. I'll get my time to shine when we talk about Cam Ward's Pro Day, perhaps the best Pro Day ever. And those are not my words. Those are not even my words, okay? But Kenton, you know, you and I, I think that are the coverage that we had on that ACCC settlement
Starting point is 00:01:32 several weeks ago, I think is aging pretty well. Because some people tried to frame it like it was a victory for the ACC to keep everything together until 2030 or 2031. But now people who cover Florida state at a high level thinks they may get out in the next couple of years, not five, six years. We're talking two or three years. Who could have seen this coming, Donna? Who could have seen this?
Starting point is 00:01:59 You nor I could have seen. It's almost as if maybe somebody can go back in time to when the success initiative was created. And maybe there were some guys on some podcasts saying, hey, I don't think that this is a good road to be heading them. Because when you start this compilation, it will never be enough. If only somebody had said that, Dono. If only somebody said when this settlement came up, this sounds good in theory, but I'm not sure if this guarantees the ability to, through the five years that we're talking about because the buyout dropped so drastically.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Oh, man. If only there were somebody that would have warned us, you know, if only were some handsome, bald, bearded gentleman who said, hey, this is going to be a problem in the near future. And lo and behold, you know, we're still sitting up here saying, well, Florida State could still leave before the 2030 expected date. like I have always said Florida State was I'm sorry not Florida State they did their job the
Starting point is 00:03:05 ACC was supposed to dig their heels in and fight with every tooth nail scrapping clawed if I'm going to go down I'm going down fighting that's what they were supposed to do but this settlement has done nothing more than clear a path for Florida State to leave early like I said Because again, is the buyout too high for them in three years? Who knows? Who knows if that's the case? And even still, at five years, we already know, is cooked, it's over, it's done with. So, you know, if they leave even before that, at that point, the question becomes,
Starting point is 00:03:43 what the hell was the point in the settlement? And again, that's why I have to believe the only way that I'll say ACC leadership did anything positive in this settlement is if a certain company with mouse ears, and that that enjoys, you know, Mickey and Minnie and Donald and Goofy and all. Only that company could have come in and said, you've got to do this. And I'll say, okay, your hands were tied. You could have done nothing else. Because if that was not the case and you just rolled over and gave all those things
Starting point is 00:04:15 just because this was a masterclass of incompetence by the ACC, as shown by FSU having a potential path to lead before 2030. And the TV networks, not just the one with the mouse ears, but some of the other ones as well are the real power brokers here. So this new report on Florida State, I give credit to Wachant, which is a good outlet. They're, I think, an on-three affiliate now. Warchant has been around forever. They do actual journalism. Like, this is not me quoting some blogger.
Starting point is 00:04:47 Like, Warchant is a good media outlet. And I was watching a podcast featuring Gene Williams, who's the founder of, Warchant. He said, quote, stuff is ramping up with the big 10 in terms of FSU going there. Some of the other notes I took on this conversation, Kent. And he doesn't think Florida State will even stay in the ACC until 2030, right? He gave his own estimate, which may or not be exact by the year, but he thinks that Florida State will remain in the ACC this year, 2025 and 26, and then after two more seasons, they would go somewhere else likely to the Big Ten. And he thinks very possibly a TV network, in this case could be Fox,
Starting point is 00:05:34 could help them pay a portion of the buyout. He says he thinks Florida State would start their Big Ten partnership, not at a full share. And this is something we've talked about because, again, when you go to a new conference, usually you start out with a lesser revenue share, right? But he says he thinks, based on his sourcing and the buzz, that it would be closer to a full share than to a hat share. And, you know, he did also wonder, this is the last note that I have, he wondered that if things, you know, in the next couple years get really close to wrapping up with the Big Ten, he wonders if, you know, the SEC would maybe swoop in and try to take Florida State. for themselves, even though the SEC already has a footprint in Florida, they don't necessarily want the Big Ten to also get a footprint in SEC country, right?
Starting point is 00:06:25 It's the old Kevin Durant to the Warriors thing. I don't need you here. I just need you to not be there type of deal. But it's so interesting, Donnell, because now we're hearing that Fox could come in and pay down some of the buyout. Huh. Huh. And again, this is why I say Disney must have had the pressure, but even if Disney did apply that pressure, it still didn't make much sense for them. Because you're still giving your prize assets the ability
Starting point is 00:06:56 to leave you potentially. You still get, and this is the type of stuff. People wonder why I get so passionate and I yell sometimes because Dono, I don't have a degree in business. What did you major in when you were at Miami, Donald?
Starting point is 00:07:12 I actually do have a degree in business as odd as that means. You do have a degree. You do have a degree in business. Okay. So not only do we have a man that knows his props well, but we have a man who knows business overall well here in Donna. And I will say my business knowledge is better than my knowledge of successfully winning bets, just so we're clear. And either way, you and I, a business major and a communications major, are both on the same page. Hey, this didn't make sense from a business standpoint for the ACC at all, at all. This type of bending the knee did not make sense at all because again you have given a partner that at multiple
Starting point is 00:07:53 different points has done this the opportunity to do it again it's like it i look at giving the ground here a lot like fighting somebody else because your old lady is cheap right if you fight the new guy you whip the wheels on them i mean you put the paws on the donno you hit him with the jab jab straight and then hit him with the upper cut to close them off right you beat them up you got to see a new guy in them up that's what it is they're not going to stop they're not going to become different florida state was never going to feel differently about the acc and yet the acc just keep saying take more here's more you've earned one we'll give you more and now we're still seeing we're not even safe until 2030. Well, who could, who could have guessed this? Who could have been screaming and
Starting point is 00:08:46 shouting into the abyss? Please don't do this ACC. You're dooming yourselves. And loom behold, this doom and gloom is coming before 2030, which is a real show. Now, you know, stuff that, at least in the part that I watch was not mentioned is, you know, if Florida State were to leave, you know, what does that mean for Clemson? We assume Clemson probably would want to leave as well. they were also suing the ACC. Now, you shared something with me, because you're in the state of North Carolina. Now, if UNC were to leave the ACC,
Starting point is 00:09:21 they legally would have to take NC state with them. Is that correct? Not at the moment. However, new legislation is being proposed to make exactly that reality, as it is in certain other states with public universe. I believe that is the case with Virginia. So whoever takes Virginia has to take Virginia Tech as well or vice versa.
Starting point is 00:09:42 Whoever takes Virginia Tech has to take Virginia, so on and so forth. There are multiple states with those types of agreements if schools are public. The only reason that the North Carolina bill that is being discussed right now does not include Duke and Wake Forest is because they're private entities, they're private institutions. So you can't include them in in the same way that if there was a bill saying Florida State and Florida had to stick together, you couldn't throw Miami in because Miami's private. It's the exact same deal here. But that is something that's being looked at very heavily,
Starting point is 00:10:11 which in all fairness, I think considering the fact that Swofford was a quarterback at UNC and he began the decline that we are now looking at, by the way, don't look up who's the VP of the company that got the ACC TV deal that led us here. That was a direct line to like, oh, now we have to bend the need to every that Clemson and Florida State want, and they're still going to leave. So I think it would just be nothing short of San Dippantus to say,
Starting point is 00:10:41 if you want to leave, take somebody with you. You don't got to take the whole conference with you. At least take your team that's right down the street that keeps whooping the wheels off your football with you. Well, when we come back, we are a few weeks away from the NFL draft, did Cam Ward raise his stock somehow even higher? want to keep it locked right here, my friends. We're only getting started on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC. My friends, the Armada team of the week is brought to you by our friends at
Starting point is 00:11:18 Nissan and the all-new 2025 Nissan Armada. Each week, our Lockdown College basketball experts are picking one team that stands apart from the top-seeded stars to the unexpected upsets. These guys showcase the strength and power needed to push their team forward. This week's Armada and Clearcut team of the week is the Arkansas Razorbacks. Despite losing their first five of SEC games. Coach Cal's hogs fought their way through the most rugged conference in college basketball to not only make the NCAA tournament, but knock off back to back national champion and Hall of Fame coaches en route to the Sweet 16. They accomplish all of this without second leading score of boogie flanned for most of the SEC play. And guys, when it comes to the Nissan Armada,
Starting point is 00:12:03 they say, go forth and conquer. And that's exactly what the Arkansas Razorbacks have done here. It's clear that our team of the week is out here ready to conquer the road ahead with confidence, just like you can in the all-new Armada or any of Nissan's outstanding vehicles. Take the Nissan Armada, Rogue or Pathfinder, and go find your next big adventure. Shop NissanUSA.com. Thank you for making this episode of LockdowneACC, your first listen and your first watch today for your next listen. Make sure you check out Kent and Gibbs and Grayson Boone on Locked on Wolfpack. Check me out on Locked on Cains.
Starting point is 00:12:45 been talking about Cam Ward's Pro Day. Kenton and Grayson have been talking about Will Wade, new head basketball coach at NC State, we'll talk a little bit more about him. So, you know, Kenton, I know that when it comes to quarterbacks throwing at pro days, obviously the routes and the sequence of things, it's, you know, it's choreographed is the word that I'm looking for.
Starting point is 00:13:09 But you can still be impressed with the way that turns out. I mean, Cam Ward was accurate on 80 of the 80, of the 85 throws that he made at his pro day. A lot of those were down the field, deep stuff. He was taking reps in a way that the Tennessee Titans wanted. That's the team that has the number one overall pick. And by the way, all 32 NFL teams were represented at the Miami Pro Day on Monday. And Ryan Wilson of CBS sports even said, quote, this was the best pro day performance I've ever
Starting point is 00:13:40 seen in person and it might not even be close. I mean, it was, and Ward, after one of the dimes that he threw Kent, it actually ran by the Tennessee Titans contingent and said, I'm solidifying it today, he told them, meaning his draft status. And Tennessee has since scheduled like a follow-up private workout and interview with Ward. So I think at this point, it's not a question of will he be the number one overall pick? It's a question of, are the Titans going to keep the pick or shopping? And according to Adam Schaefter, based on Ward's ProDade,
Starting point is 00:14:14 they're more likely to keep the pick and not be willing to trade it away to somebody. I want to make one thing clear right now. This is locked on ACCC and not locked on Keynes, but I need to speak to Hurricane players for a second. Do y'all see what happens when you come back for an extra year? Yeah. How many hurricane players have we seen over the past few years that we all knew, hey, if this guy comes back for a year,
Starting point is 00:14:39 he can take his stock through the route, left early to go undrafted. Yeah, it's a great point. You were a preseason all-conference guy. Stay another year if you had a disappointing year. Look what happens. Cam Ward didn't finish up at Washington State spectacularly. He entered the draft as a matter of fact, or did not officially enter the draft, but verbally stated his intent to do so.
Starting point is 00:15:02 He came back and what happened, Donna? What happened? Raise his stock. Raise his stock. But I will say. say this. That pro, that pro day didn't raise the stock at all. He was the number one pick. Everybody
Starting point is 00:15:14 knew his number one pick going in. There wasn't really much suspense or anything like that to it. He might have raised the stock value of the Titans number one overall pick, possibly. He could have made that like a if you want this pick,
Starting point is 00:15:31 you've got to give us three first instead of two. Maybe. But even with that, I think it's a foolhardy decision. Don't get me wrong. I know that people are very big on pro days and scouts are like, oh, you know, somebody running at their home field where they're comfortable instead of Indianapolis where they maybe never played before in Lucas Oil and all that good stuff. I'm telling you right now, pro days should not matter that intensely to these scouts.
Starting point is 00:15:57 If you are worth your weight in dog pool, you know that. Why? Donald, quick question. what defense do any what defensive scheme does anybody run where you don't have anybody rushing or anybody covering the NFL? Is there such a system? Seven on seven? Not in the NFL, no.
Starting point is 00:16:18 Okay. Is there a system where guys are in shorts and t-shirts out there running around? Is that a thing? I mean, somewhat argue the New York Giants did that last year. Fair, very fair. But, you know, all of these guys, including Xavier Restrepo, when he ran a 4-8 and everybody's coming down on him about it and he said, all right, now it's time for me to play guys
Starting point is 00:16:41 and now we put the stopwatches away. You're damn right. Too often people get enamored by these. He made a throw. He made a throw, a pro-day throw to Zach Wilson from like, he might be a first rounder to the number two overall pick. Yeah. So at this point in time, I think that we all need to take a step back.
Starting point is 00:17:04 and say, you know what, football is not played in this manner. It's just not. Don't get me wrong. Yes, some of these things are important. Yes. For a cornerback, sure, how fast you run 40 yards actually does matter. You will do that on a regular basis. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:17:22 It's not that important to see a guy, you know, did Cam Ward on that last play of the pro day where they ran the trick play where Xavier Strepo threw it back to him on like a Philly special thing? Is that what raised? this stop? Because again, what did Cam Ward do? Play receiver too, apparently. So what did he do? And Donald, you're a Miami guy. You watch every snap
Starting point is 00:17:42 of Miami football this year. I know you. I know you do your due dunce. What did you see from him at Pro Day that you didn't see also? Nothing new. He even, during the season, he caught a touchdown pass in a game that Elijah Royo threw to him. I guess the only the only thing that I saw it, again, nothing new
Starting point is 00:18:00 but seeing him throw that consistently, you know, I think he put up 85 throws, 80 of them at least were right on target. Like it was still obviously different. It's not a game, right? I'm a lot more impressed with what he did against the Florida Gators in a game last year or against Cal when they were down 25 points. That was more impressive to me.
Starting point is 00:18:22 But seeing him string together that many dimes back to back to back in the pro day, I see your point, but it was still pretty impressive. He's a pro and I don't want to take anything away from him. I'm not saying this hurt as. I'm not saying, oh, even if he had completed 45 of the 85 passes, it's still the same. What I'm saying is we need to weigh these things less because at the end of the day, that's not what ball looks like. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:18:49 That's my only thing about it. And again, we have seen God if I'm a scout and I'm depending on this kid to feed my family, right? Like whether or not I hit on this young man is whether or not I feed my family, I get that you want to see him throw in. a game. You want to see him throw in a t-shirt. You want to see him throw to a strepho. You want to see him throw to some no-name guy from Lenore Ron that you've never heard of. But you're like, oh, he's at the combine too. Let's see how he flings it. I get off. I get off. But at some point in time, you get paralysis by analysis. And at some point in time, you've seen the fifth. You've had them in for the one-on-one interviews. You had them in
Starting point is 00:19:31 at the combine where you say, hey, the Tennessee Times going to meet. with you. Okay, come on. All right. You get to ask all of those silly goose questions. If you're traveling on a bus, where would you want to be in the front or in the back? Okay, if you were on the Titanic, how would you divert from hitting the, you know, even though folks that look like him were, none of us were allowed on the Titanic. You get to ask all those silly goofy questions, right? At some point in time, let's not overthink this. That's your number one pick. He's phenomenal. I think he's going to have a wonderful NFL career. But to me,
Starting point is 00:20:05 I'm never going to be a guy that says what you do in shorts and T-shirt can raise your stock immensely. It's one of those things to me. It can only hurt your stock to some extent. And even with that, it can't hurt you too much because Xavier's Shrepo not running that fast in the straight line. I don't give a damn. I've seen what he does
Starting point is 00:20:21 when the ball is in his hands. I've seen defenders who run much faster than him in a straight line try to cover him when he's zigging and zagging. When he's running a bang eight, a curl, a goal, You know, I've seen his comeback rock. I think that's much more important than what he does in shorts and T-shirt.
Starting point is 00:20:40 I got a question for you because one of the things that I was watching was the bench press. Like when you're in your playing prime, how many reps could you do with 225? The most that I ever accomplished was 27. I think that was a month. That's pretty damn good. That's pretty good. Because Miami had Simi and Barrow. He put up 32 reps yesterday.
Starting point is 00:20:59 And that was, I think, by far, I had it in front of me how much everybody did, but I think that was by far the most. But 27's pretty good, man. I think my 225 record was like four. Well, even with that, right, turn on the tape of barrel. How does he translate it to the field? I played with a young man. I played with a young man that turned out to be a power lifter.
Starting point is 00:21:21 Literally, he's an Olympic level power lifter, right? But on the field, he couldn't translate. Even when we lifted at NC State, he was a fantastic. he was a fantastic lifter. His numbers off the charts. He couldn't translate it into functional like, oh, I can power clean a lot. I can explode out of my hips with it. It's a different ball game, you know.
Starting point is 00:21:44 So again, I get it. I get to certain things you want to see. What's the 10 yards split for a line? How explosive are you? Oh, bench press. How well do you get guys off you? But if you can bench press 40 reps and you are terrible with your hands, are always on the outside of offensive lineman shoulder pads.
Starting point is 00:22:04 I don't give a damn if you can best press 225. 50 times. If your targeting is bad, if your pad level is awful and your first step is always standing straight up, you're not converting what you are doing with those metrics into tangible, I can see your power type of thing. And I get this for guys who play at schools where you're not playing equivalent competition, right? Like if you're playing at, what's that school in Wisconsin that wins all of, Mount Olive or whatever, it's where the Eagles head coach went.
Starting point is 00:22:38 Pierre Garsohn went there too. Oh, I can't remember. It might be Mount Olive. Wisconsin, Whitewater, whatever it is. That school, sure, I get trying to see like, okay, you're doing this against guys that you're only playing against future accountants and guys. Mount Union. Mount Union. Okay, I knew it was Mount something.
Starting point is 00:22:57 But yeah, if you're at Mountain Union, I understand wanting to see the bench press, one to see the 40, want to see all the things. But if you're playing against guys that you're going to be playing against on Sunday, I want to see how you match up against guys that are going to be playing on Sunday. That's what I want to see. Turn it on the tape. Turn it on the tape of Xavier Restrepo playing against NFL level corners. Turn on the tape of Cam Moore playing against the defensive line.
Starting point is 00:23:20 They got two edge rushes that are going to be making a good amount of money on Sunday. What did that look like? When I see what that looks like, then I can make it deterrentice. as opposed to, how's it looking shorts and t-shirts? They're playing the Osley brothers. Summer Breeze makes me feel fine. Everything's going good at the pro day, you know. I don't want to hear that.
Starting point is 00:23:40 I want to know what you're doing in a lot of time when the bullets are flying at you, obviously metaphorical bullets are flying at you. You've got to make real-time decisions like that. I love it. Well, when we come back, you got new head coaches, new basketball coaches, introduced this week. UVA and NC State. And, yeah, of course, we're a couple days more before the Sweet 16 gets going with Duke as our last and final hope. But we've got new hoops coaches for ACC men's programs, Kenton.
Starting point is 00:26:14 Ryan Odom, who's very familiar with Charlottesville, becomes the head coach at Virginia. And Will Wade, as we've talked about, becomes the head coach of NC State. Will Wade coming from McNeese State, Odom coming from VCU. they both had a lot of recent success at their previous stops. Of course, you know, Wade's successful at a number of different stops. You see what he did with the Mnese State Program. They just won their first NCAA tournament game in the history of that program. You know, I know that I, you probably feel like Will Wade,
Starting point is 00:26:50 and I would agree probably would be even more impactful. But what do you think about both of these hires, Kenton, and how they can re-elevate these programs? I think that both of these hires are extremely amazing for just a wide myriad of reasons. Starting off with these are proven problems. These are guys that have had success at every single level that they've been at. Now, Odom, you've got the question of power for a little bit more than Will Wade. Because Will Wade, while people may walk away from the LSU thing remembering, federal investigation, you know what I also remember?
Starting point is 00:27:28 didn't he win the SEC? Didn't he, he won the SEC when he was there? Oh, okay, sure. All right. So, you know, while Odom may be a little bit more improving in that regard, I think he still has shown extreme propensity to have success wherever he goes. But even more so, both of these guys are fit for where they're going. Virginia is known for that kind of prim and proper, you know,
Starting point is 00:27:53 there's such a way about Virginia. Sometimes you forget their public school. You know what I'm saying? There's that type of buttoned up very, you know, very hoity-toity type of thing about them. And Odom also has that one thing. And I think that's the whole state. It's like it's not a state. It's a commonwealth, right?
Starting point is 00:28:12 I mean, the whole, they do things a different way up there. Yes. And then we'll wait to NC State. Oh, he don't like nobody. Nobody likes him. He don't give a damn. He wants to win. And guess what?
Starting point is 00:28:25 NC State is that team in the state of North Carolina. Everybody talks about Duke and Carolina as if it's a robbery. Those two like each other. Like, I genuinely want people to look at that rivalry and look at how they talk about each other. Those two are buddies. You know who actually doesn't like anybody in the state who actually hates the other guys? It's the state. It's actually like legit.
Starting point is 00:28:47 I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk. I hate the way that you dress. It is something different in that. And you need a guy like Willow. That's going to walk in and say, I don't give a damn how you all feel about me. I don't care. John Rossi said that he will step over guys and slits your throat and get a player.
Starting point is 00:29:06 And you know what NC State fans thought about that? Immediate excitement. As opposed to Bubba Cunningham, who is North Carolina's AD that every time when they're head coach says something mean about NC State, they have to like apologize for it. There's a difference. There's a difference. Like we, it's a like we hate these guys and we are glad to hate those guys. We are happy to tell everybody how much we hate those guys.
Starting point is 00:29:30 Nothing takes us from 6 to 12, like our ability to tell people, we really hate those guys. Did you know that? So Will Wade is a great fit because of that. He is that guy that his introductory press conference, he did not mention I am more than two or three times. It was more so about we are. This program is. This will not be a long turnaround. We will be in the tournament next year.
Starting point is 00:29:54 And it was much more of a we feel than you get from most press conferences. Same with Odom. But again, Odom had his deal. Even in when he got excited, it was very buttoned up, very, you know, very professional, very much like, this is what you expect a Division I Coast of Sama. Yeah. And the Ryan Odom hire at Virginia, it's, you know, there's a lot of good storylines there. You know, he lived there for like seven years as a child because his father was an assistant coach. there and he used to be a
Starting point is 00:30:26 Wahoo's ball boy when he was a kid. He would go by practices. He was a ball boy on game day. So that's a really cool full circle moment. So yeah, you know, we... You couldn't even track a flight. You couldn't even get the flight tracker going to say, oh, did UVA go get him?
Starting point is 00:30:41 Because, I mean, Richmond and Charlottesville are so close. Nobody took a flight. It was like a drive over. Hey, let's drive on over the ride and break them off with this off. You know, over. Exactly. Let's get the lift drivers in to move his stuff from point A to point B. Throw it in the back of a U-Haul, Relo Q of a song.
Starting point is 00:31:01 You know, nothing too crazy. I love it. So I think ACC coaching has gotten better within the last couple of weeks, which is something we need heading into next season.
