He is Kenton Gibbs, former NC State defensive lineman and co-host of Lockdown Wolfpack.
Starting point is 00:00:43 I am Alex Dono, host of Lockdown Cains, and today's episode is brought to you by Monarch Money. Take control of your finances with Monarch Money. Use code Lockdown College at Monarchmoney.com for 50% off your first year. On this loaded Lockdown ACC, did SWU head coach Rhett Lashley go a little too far when talking up the ACC because Paul Feinbaum has been all over coached Lashley for the past few days. But before we get to all that,
Starting point is 00:01:12 Kenton, we have the pleasure of bringing in the awesome host, not only of Locked on Tar Heels, but also the host of Locked on College basketball. We'll be focusing, though, I guess, on football, although this would deal with every single sport. Isaac Shade from Lockdown Tar Heels is with us. So, Isaac, first of all,
Starting point is 00:01:30 I always have to tread lightly when we talk about reports and rumors about conference realignment, because everybody's got an opinion, there's a lot of fake news out there. How much stock do you put in these latest reports that North Carolina might have a handshake with the SEC? Legitimately, I put some good stock into this, Donno, because the report, you know, a bunch people have heard it, but probably don't know the genesis of it, I guess we'll say. actually came from Carolina's 247 site called Inside Carolina, which is the most reputable inside connected Carolina beat report there is.
Starting point is 00:02:08 It's one of the biggest 247 sites out there. It came from an article from Adam Smith, who's like their main writer, was basically talking about some of Commissioner Phillips comments from ACC kickoff last week. And as Commissioner Phillips was talking about, hey, we're all united, we're all together, Clemson, FSU, that's all done and behind us.
Starting point is 00:02:27 so we're good. And then as part of that, he just brought up some of the sources he had talked to that basically said, hey, look, it looks like SEC is probably going to be a thing. Now that the ACC has made these concessions where the money's coming down, it's whatever, 175 right now going to go down to 18 million a year. And so at some point between now and 2030, 31, when it bottoms out at 75 million, it's going to make a lot of sense for Carolina to go to the SEC. And so that's kind of where it all comes from. And because of the source that it comes from, I actually put some legit stock into it. So in terms of people talking about North Carolina going to the SEC, one thing that I keep hearing a lot is fit, right?
Starting point is 00:03:11 I keep hearing, well, the fit wouldn't be there for Florida State because they already have a foothold in Florida and all those things. And same thing with Clemson. They're already in South Carolina, all those things. and even beyond that, the culture of the school and how that blends with the SEC may not be the best of fits. How do you see a potential fit with the SEC? Do you think there's a potential fit or do you think they should stay with the ACC? Look, Kenton, as a long-time, lifelong ACC guy, I would love for Carolina to stay with the ACC. In an ideal world, the new revshare payouts and stuff like work for everybody and it makes sense and let's keep it.
Starting point is 00:03:48 for the longest time, the conversation has been Carolina probably to the big 10, right? I think I've talked about that with you guys on here because of both academics and athletics. Carolina, you know, all the joke, let's get all our jokes out about the NCAA scandal. But all the academic side of it, Carolina is a reputable school, the med school, all of that. And then Carolina is a school that has 28 varsity sports. Donno, you mentioned it coming in here of like it's not just football. it's not just basketball, it's 28 sports. I went back and did some research as this news came out.
Starting point is 00:04:23 The SEC currently does not support seven of those 28. So literally a quarter of Carolina's varsity athletics aren't in the SEC. And so from an athletic fit, it makes more sense in the Big Ten because it does support all 28 of those. However, I went a little further into it. And there are multiple SEC programs that do have some of those sports and they are just housed in other conferences. So if Carolina left, could they have those seven sports in the ACC or elsewhere, for example, like Oklahoma has, I think, wrestling back in the Big 12 as an example from their former conference. So even though I have talked about and heard about and everybody's said to me, Big 10 for so long,
Starting point is 00:05:06 I'm starting to see the picture more clearly now for SEC being a legitimate fit from a both academic and athletic standpoint. And let's trace back all the way to the 1920s when Carol's. Carolina was part of the SOCON with a whole bunch of these SEC schools anyway. I've got a question that might be for either of you or for both of you because you both in the state of North Carolina. I am not an expert on North Carolina state law. I remember over the last several months seeing some reports and, you know, where allegedly there's a law in the state of North Carolina where if UNC were to leave the ACC, they would have to take the other schools.
Starting point is 00:05:47 with them like NC State. Like is, is there a workaround to that? Has that law not been passed? You know, either of you want to take that because I'd love to know. I'll start. That law hasn't even been proposed. The law as it currently stands, hold on, give me just a second here. All right.
Starting point is 00:06:04 So the law as it currently stands that was trying to be passed was a protect robberies act that would ensure that North Carolina and NC State would still have to play each other a certain amount of times per year, regardless of what conference they were in. So it wasn't a, hey, you have to take little brother with you type of thing. It was more of a wherever you go, you will be Batman, they will be Joker. That is it for whoever decides to leave or whichever way that works out. So it was much more of that than the opposite here. And part of it too was just those two public schools, Donno, not including Duke and Wake when you talk about the four ACC schools. And so, look, people still bring it up because I think
Starting point is 00:06:47 it's a thing like within the Carolina, within the North Carolina house of like, um, certain parties want to tie the schools together. Others don't. And so I think it's going to continue to be a battle. I don't think it's done and over, Kenton, unless you would disagree with that. No, I'll hardly agree. I think that this thing is, is long from over. And I highly doubt that there will be legislation introduced that passes that says, hey, y'all are bound together. I think that it's difficult enough to get the rivalries pass. And even on a lower level, they were trying to introduce legislation that mandates NC.
Starting point is 00:07:24 Kenton's gone. Donno, I'll just jump in really quick. I had done a Twitter poll last week when this was all coming out and just asked if UNC ultimately decided if it was in their best interest to leave the ACC, where would you rather see them land? As we record right now, it's got 277 votes. 64.6% said SEC, 35.4% said Big 10. So that's just, you know, obviously probably a fan base straw poll.
Starting point is 00:07:51 But for what it's worth, there you go. Ah, it seems like the North Carolina legislature is trying to silence me there. But what I was saying there was the reality of this situation is there was even legislation on a lower level to mandate NC State and UNC to play the likes of UNC Charlotte and Eastern Carolina. And App State and all the other schools that are in the North Carolina education system and publicly funded. So that was a battle. Getting NC State and UNC to agree to play each other regards to conference is a battle.
Starting point is 00:08:25 Now, if that's tough, how tough do you think it would be to, let's just be honest, I can be honest as a state grad and all that and admit, hey, UNC is a national brand. That is just what it is. It's not about how passionate your fans are, even if your fans, depth go as far as I saw this t-shirt in Walmart and now I'm a fan of this school it does not matter if they tune in and watch your program congratulations you have a leg up over a team who has a smaller contingent even if that smaller contingent is much more past it really doesn't matter so I can be honest to admit this is this is a realistic situation where this is a situation where realistically
Starting point is 00:09:05 you're not going to get a law passed within the time needed most likely to tie these schools together the that Virginia has it where if you take Virginia Tech, you got to take UVA. And if you take UVA, you got to take UVA, you got to take Virginia Tech. We probably won't get that passed in the state North Carolina. And Donno, I don't know if you guys have talked about it on the show, but anything that would happen cannot happen for 26, 27, because that date has been updated from not being August 15th anymore to now being, I can't remember if it's June 1 or July 1, but you've now got to make that declaration to the conference office by that point for the next year. And so we will continue to watch not only for North Carolina, but other schools as well,
Starting point is 00:09:46 now that the ACC is basically acquiesced to all this. Well, that's definitely something to look out for. And I thought Isaac framed it well that even though the commissioner was talking about what a big, happy family everyone is now, there are still a lot of uncertainty around the ACC. Well, make sure you guys check out Isaac, not only on Locked on Tar Heels, but Locked on College Basketball. Follow him on X at Isaac Shade. Isaac, thank you so much. Enjoy the rest of your week. My pleasure, fellas. Have a great show. Love it. And we're only getting started here on Locked on ACC. So did Rhett Lashley, head coach of SMU, did he go a little too far caping up for the ACC?

Kenton Gibbs and Grayson Boone host Locked on Wolfpack covering everything NC State. I cover everything Miami at Locked on Caines. All right. So, Kenton, I felt when we were watching the different press conferences and interviews at the ACC kickoff last week, I don't think anyone stood up more for the ACC outside of the commissioner Jim Phillips than Rhett Lashley. And I get it like SMU. They are super appreciative. to be in a power for conference now. You know, they had that unbelievable 11 win debut season in the ACC last year. I mean, they love being in the ACC so much. They're paying to be in the ACC. They're not even currently making a revenue split. But do you feel that some of these comments that Lashley made was it a little too over the top when you start kind of going after the SEC to prop up the ACC? Let me read this quote to you, Kenton. The SEC has had the same six schools win the championship since 1964.
Starting point is 00:12:40 Not a single one has been different since 1964, he said. That's top heavy to me. That's not depth. I don't think that's far enough. I don't, you're asking if it's too far. In the words of push a tee, there is no too far. There is no too far. Don't play with me like that.
Starting point is 00:13:00 There is no too far. That's the spirit that I felt like Brett Lashley channeled right there. Because, I mean, he's wrong. I have said for the longest, SEC fans get away with doing the thing where they get together. And regardless of whose team it is, all of a sudden is SEC, SEC at the end. I hate that. You've never been that way.
Starting point is 00:13:24 You've never been that way. You're an Auburn fan. Why are you rooting for the tie? The ACC, we're real haters over here. We're real haters. Dono, you're a Miami guy. Were you rooting for James and Kevin B. Benjamin and company back in what was it?
Starting point is 00:13:39 Oh, my 13? No, I wanted them to lose so bad. And when, when, uh, didn't, Auburn had a big lead for most of that game. And I'm like all happy and then Florida State. I was not happy that Florida State won that championship. Exactly, Donno. Exactly. Nobody in the ACC, we bring real hate.
Starting point is 00:13:58 The hate means more in the ACC, okay? The hate means more. You want to talk about what rivalries are about and all that? You know, somebody. said one of the people who was asking a question at ACC media days said you know Haynes king you rushed for X amount of times against the Georgia bulldog you played like a dog that day and you know what coach Brent key said no no he ain't played like no dog because that's real hatred right real you know and the SEC gets away with this oh well our team didn't make it but somebody did
Starting point is 00:14:36 And it's our conference and we're all friends. They're great representatives of our conference. I'm glad that Red Lashley did it because I have said this for very long. And I'll continue to say it until we have our propagandists on air that we need our Paul Fibor. We need somebody that's going to be the hater that disrespects these other conferences the way that these other conferences disrespect us that talks about these other conferences the way that they get on there every time at ESPN and talk about the ACC.
Starting point is 00:15:03 I'm sorry. A lot of those schools, you're right. They haven't won championships if ever. Don't talk to me about Ole Miss. Last time y'all won a championship, people like me weren't letting your school. Don't talk to me about y'all being a great bastion of athletic excellence. Don't tell me about that.
Starting point is 00:15:21 Don't tell me about Nate Oaks and what they're doing in basketball or what Auburn's doing in basketball. At the end of the day, oh, Florida got national championships in basketball. Don't tell me about that because we all know basketball is not driving realignment. And if you want to talk hoops, you definitely don't want smoke. the ACC and what we've done all time because the guy that's wearing your shoes,
Starting point is 00:15:41 he may be a bald gambling degenerate, but guess what? And no, we're not talking about Dono, but guess what? He's widely accepted as the goal. So I just see it as a situation where, again, I'm glad that Red Lashley did that because the ACC needs that energy. We need that somebody that's going to buck up and buck back against the SEC. Because even the Big Ten is more quiet than it. Even the Big Ten is more respectful than them in terms of, hey, everybody plays a good ball.
Starting point is 00:16:09 We just happen to play better ball. Not the SEC, not the Paul Fire Bombs of the world. So I'm glad Red Lasxley is here. Well, it's like, I mean, to me, though, if you want to talk about a big time conference being top heavy, I think there's a much better argument for the Big Ten than there would be for the SEC. Because, I mean, if you didn't have Michigan and Ohio State, like you don't have a have a, have a con, the Big Ten is not a big deal. At least the SEC has like a half dozen teams that can kind of kick.
Starting point is 00:16:35 that conference with Alabama having been on top for a long time, Georgia. I'll just say that, you know, Lashley, there's a valid point buried in there. And everything you just said, Kenton is valid because I do think the SEC's depth gets way overblown, like when people act as though, you know, Vanderbilt was just some amazing team last year. You know, they went 500. They were bowl eligible. They won some games.
Starting point is 00:17:00 Like, it was fine. Lost to Georgia State. Lost the Georgia State. not even the best team in the city of Atlanta and you're lost to them. Don't tell me about no bandee. Yeah. And of course, you know, Oklahoma was terrible last year. And then people like downplay, you know, Alabama's lost to Oklahoma.
Starting point is 00:17:15 It's like, Oklahoma's a great program. They're in the SEC. So I get it. Like the SEC depth gets overblown and exaggerated at the same time when Lashley said what he said, I cringed a little bit. I'm like, oh, somebody's going to go after him for this. And I should have known it would be Fine Bomb. So here's what Fine Bomb said on Get Up on ESPN.
Starting point is 00:17:34 First of all, he says, I think Alabama has won about 11 national championships in that period that he laid out. But that's not even the main point. If I understand correctly, he's the head coach at SMU. I bet you know where I'm going here. 1987, he said, do you know what happened at SMU? They shut the program down. While he's making fun of the SEC for winning national championships all over the place, SMU is the most corrupt program in the history of college football.
Starting point is 00:18:02 Ret Lashley has the nerve to get up there and throw stones. By the way, he played at Arkansas, Finebaum said. That should have nothing to do with it. That was one of the most comically embarrassing rant I have heard, and I'm glad the audio wasn't clear because I would have come right through that screen. Now, for as much as I cringed a little bit at Lashley's comments, Feinbaum took it way over the top because Kenton, what does Rhett Lashley have to do with 1987?
Starting point is 00:18:30 What does he have to do with the pony excess? And that, you know, that death penalty scandal from 40 years ago, 38 years ago, has absolutely zero to do with SMU winning 11 games each of the past two seasons and getting to the ACC championship in the college football playoff last year. So I thought Feinbaum went way too far where he somehow turned Ret Lashley into Sherwood Blunt. Let me take my gloves off, Donald. That's what I'm doing right now. I'm taking the gloves off because we really need to get it.
Starting point is 00:19:00 to it at this point. We really need to get into it. You know what I find to be interesting for him to bring up the 80s and how corrupt SMU was in 80. Here's what I find interesting, Dono. What year was NIL bought into practice? What year was that officially announced as, hey, this is part of the popular lexicon and all that. What year was that? It's either 2020 or 2021, something like that. 2021, right? Now, let's go backwards from 2021 and look at the last, let's say, five champions, 2021 you got Georgia, 2020, Bamba, 2019, LSU, 2018, Clemson, 2017, Bama. Of those years, 80%
Starting point is 00:19:38 SEC, right? Yeah. Now, Dono, what happened when NIL came into play? What happened? What was the effect of that in terms of players? Did players get paid publicly? Was that a situation where everybody could be paid? Or was it a situation where only a few could pay? What was the situation? No, all of a sudden, payments are out in the open,
Starting point is 00:20:00 the playing field a bit. Interesting. Well, I like the phrase that you use there, Donald. I love the phrase that you use level the playing field because I just painted a five-year picture of 80% national champion and I could go back further and you would still see a whole lot of the SEC. But all of a sudden, after that 2021 year, you got 22, Georgia, 23, Michigan, 24, Ohio State. Now, Donna, something just happened there. That math just got really good. different. What got different about that math? We went from 80% over a five-year period to a 33% guaranteed, even if the SEC wins the next two. You're at 60% still below what you were in in the last five national championship. So it's so interesting to bring up the Pony Express.
Starting point is 00:20:53 But you can't acknowledge, ever since people start getting paid, we start losing them that. since everybody could get paid and no longer were people just going to church. These players that have never been to church except Easter and Christmas, somehow on their recruiting visits, everybody wanted to go to church, Dono. And I've been on some official visits now. The last place, never mind. We ain't go get this. Long story short, the church ain't one of the places that most players who are doing it
Starting point is 00:21:23 on the up and up visit, you know. So I find it very intriguing that of all the things that the, SEC would drag out. It's, oh, you all are cheaters because of something that happened when Rhett Lashney was probably in a stroller somewhere. That was a weird place to go with it because like all all Fine Bomb really had to say was like you look at all the successful teams in the SEC, you know, over the last, you don't even have to go all the way back to 1964. I mean, you take it back 20 years. Florida won multiple national championships when Urban Meyer was there. you know, LSU has won, Bama, Georgia have won.
Starting point is 00:22:04 So, you know, I felt like there was an easier way to defend. It shouldn't be that difficult to defend the SEC where you don't need to start taking shots at a 38-year-old scandal, but Rhett Lashley had nothing to do with it. I thought that was a little odd of, you know what? Fine bomb will forever be fine bomb. He's always going to have something to say. But something I do want to bring up, Kenton, when we come back.
Starting point is 00:22:26 A little old ACC, maybe Rhett Lashley, this gives him some more Ammo. You know, the ACC leads the nation in Maxwell Award watch list guys. So, all right, so Kent, now I was looking through Maxwell watch list members. The Maxwell, they put that out this morning. It's the award given to the most outstanding player in college football, a similar criteria to the Heism. It's just not the Heisman. It's another award with the same sort of criteria. And I didn't realize this at first, the ACC leads the nation with 17 players named to the Maxwell Award preseason watch list. Now, off the top of your head, Kenton, who do you think gives the ACC the best shot? If somebody's going to take home that award this year, who's it going to be?
Starting point is 00:24:48 Amuted. Oh, man, you really put me on spot here. You really are. If I had to say, who gives the ACC the best chance of winning that award? I mean, there are so many great guys. You could go with Thomas Costalanos, of course, who carried Boston College and now he's not having to do that. He ran the conference last year.
Starting point is 00:25:09 Exactly. You know, absolutely ran this thing. You know, you could go with your boy, Carson Beck, who everybody believes not 100% good. You know, he'll be back to old form in no time. But if I had to go with one guy, that I would say, hey, this is the player that gives us the best chance to get us a Maxwell.
Starting point is 00:25:26 I have to, based off a few criteria, predominantly offensive, normally a quarterback, but sometimes a running back or wide receiver. So we know it's a skill position. We know that much. I'm probably going with Kevin Jennings. He has the highlight real ability. Either Kevin Jennings or Kay Klupnik, one of those two,
Starting point is 00:25:45 because they both have highlight real ability. They both are phenomenal players. They both play offense and they both play the premier position to win the Maxwell and quarterback. I would be shocked if it went to anybody else. If I couldn't pick a quarterback, I'd say Isaac Brown. Yeah. Isaac Brown is another one I was going to go with.
Starting point is 00:26:04 And these, all the names that you mentioned, by the way, are on the watch list. So you're not going off ballot with any of these. So, all right. So here are the 17 ACCC players named to the Maxwell Award preseason watch list. Cade Clubnik of Clemson. By the way, we're going alphabetical order of the schools, just so you know. Cade Club Nick Clemson, Antonio Williams, junior wide receiver from Clemson, Darien Mensa, quarterback from Duke.
Starting point is 00:26:29 Tommy Castellanos, Florida State quarterback, should be easy for him after running the ACC last year. Haynes King, quarterback from Georgia Tech. Jamal Haynes, running back from Georgia Tech. Miller Moss, quarterback Louisville, Isaac Brown, who you mentioned, running back from Louisville, Carson Beck, quarterback Miami, C.J. Bailey, quarterback of NC State. Eli Holstein, quarterback of Pitt.
Starting point is 00:26:53 Desmond Reed, running back from Syracie, from Pittsburgh, I should say, who's an excellent all-purpose player. Kevin Jennings, who you mentioned, quarterback from SMU, Chandler Morris, QB from Virginia, Kyron Drones, QB from Virginia Tech, Terri-on-Stewart running back from Virginia Tech, and DeMond Claiborne running back from Wake Forest. So those are your 17.
Starting point is 00:27:16 Obviously, it's hard to envision like somebody from Wake Forest or Virginia, winning the Maxwell, but, I mean, it's nice to see these guys get recognized. Absolutely, absolutely. And there's also a recognition that last season they did really good things and they're expected to have big games going forward. Dono, we're at that stage in the offseason. You know, in the NFL, people start believing in Kyle Pitts again. In college, I'm starting to believe in Kyron Jones again.
Starting point is 00:27:42 I'm starting to believe. I'm starting to, Dono, I'm starting to get to that point. I'm starting to pull me off the ledge, Donald, pull me off the lens. Because the last couple of years, I thought he was going to set the ACC on. fire and with Donovan Green coming from Wake Forest, an electric, electric receiver, I could see it happening again, Donald. Pull me off the legs. Yeah, pull me back.
Starting point is 00:28:07 Somebody grab me. Somebody stop me because I'm starting to get that Chiron Drone's fever at this time of the year. He's got the rocket arm. It's just about kind of harnessing the accuracy. He's got the dual threat capability. Like he can kill you in a lot of different ways. I mean, if you're an opposing defensive coordinator,
Starting point is 00:28:27 I don't imagine game planning to go up against Kyron drones is fun. So, hey, maybe he has that opportunity. A lot of the same things we say about Kevin Jennings, we say about Kyron drones. Yeah, yeah. There are a lot of great guys on that list, man. And even when you get down to a Demand Claiborne, who I think is one of the best one cut running backs,
Starting point is 00:28:46 which, to be honest, that system that he was playing in that long, slow mesh, a player like him, that hurt his production. objectively, he's the type of guy that when he sees a hole, if you just give him the ball and let him go, he will make big things happen. But that kind of, oh, wait and see, wait and see. We're playing with the mesh for two and a half seconds here. You know, I think that was a tough time.
Starting point is 00:29:07 But like you said, it's tough to imagine a guy from Wade Forest winning the Maxwell Award. But, man, it will have some great dynamic playmakers this year. And I think it's interesting that all of the guys that you named were offensive, even though T.J. Parker and probably the best. player in the nation and Peter Wood are in this, Peter Woods are in this, this conference. But who do I, what do I know, doctor? That's why my criteria was predominantly offensive, going to be a skill position, because despite the fact that we have some fantastic defenders, we know it's all about
Starting point is 00:29:40 the offense. It's all about the offense. Well, we appreciate everyone for tuning in, making Locked on ACC your first listen.
