On this episode, we'll take a look at the week two matchups in the ACC.
There are some good ones to keep an eye on.
And we'll talk about Florida State who actually got fined for the celebration of beating Alabama.
It's probably worth it for them.
But let's talk about ACC power rankings.
Now, you know, Kent and Gibbs, I was going through it.
We're going to start a little bit later on in the year.
We're going to start doing our weekly locked on ACC power rankings.
But I was looking at the ones that are out there, you know, dozens of different publications.
most of them have in some order Miami and Florida State, you know, overtaking Clemson,
who is everybody's preseason number one.
Most of them have Miami number one after the win over Notre Dame, Florida State number two,
after they're upset against Bama, Clemson number three.
Do you agree with that order?
Would you even put Florida State in front of Miami, Miami in front of Florida State?
How do you feel about that top three?
No, I don't feel bad about that top three.
I look at that order and I say,
Clemson did not look impressive,
even though you talk about losing your star receiver
and Antonio Williams very early on in the game.
At the end of the day, ball is ball, is ball.
Next man up.
That's just the reality, right?
We can't, when you lose a guy and you lose the game,
guess which one matters more?
The game.
Losing the game.
If you lose the guy and you go on to win,
all of a sudden it's a different story.
And we're talking about how Kay Klubnick is a hero
and how, you know, they figured it out despite not having here and there.
When you lose the game, you're going to drop,
as opposed to two teams that beat top ten opponents.
I mean, hey, what else do you want from?
They showed up when it mattered most.
They did what they were supposed to do in terms of Miami and Florida State.
And so both teams deserve the nod at the top,
even though there was a little bit of devil magic in there from Lee Corso.
He sprinkled a little bit of devil magic.
See that?
He went six and a lot of.
No, in his final picks.
Yeah, I figured out what it was.
I'm sitting here like, how was I wrong about so many games?
It was Lee Corrosso sprinkling that old devil magic all over this thing because it is,
there was no, a lot of those games didn't even make sense.
They didn't even make sense, Dono.
But it was that, you know, that ESP and devil magic.
It got to me.
So I think the power rankings are correct by the devil magic that got involved.
Yeah, that's so true that I thought it was cool that Lee Corso,
And there were some of his picks, like you said, especially at the time when he made the Florida State pick over Alabama.
I'm like, all right, Lee. I know you've got ties to Florida State. All right. And then they actually went out there and did it. And I'll tell you, like the two big things that I learned about Florida State in Miami and their big week one wins about Florida State, how physical they have turned themselves after a season last year where they were out physicaled Kenton by, you know,
90% of their opponents last season, you know, how Florida State was able to, and I'm not going to say flip a switch, because obviously a lot of hard work and recruiting and changing over your mentality, changing your defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator had a lot to do with this.
But Florida State being so physical and, you know, really playing with a lot of pride and how prepared they were in that game.
Like, I think we learned that, yeah, you can you can turn a team's mentality around pretty darn quick if you get the right pieces in there, including the new coaches that are in there.
Florida State, by the way, I think that they're over, just based on that win,
their over under has gone from seven and a half to eight and a half now if you want to bet
the rest of the season on them.
So that that's the impact that that win had.
You know, about Miami, Kent, to the big thing I learned was that team looks balanced now.
Yeah. Right?
Where last year, offensive heavy, specifically very pass heavy because Cam Ward liked to
attack down the field so much.
You know, they had a good running game last year.
I just didn't think they used it enough, and the defense was dreadful last year.
You know, Miami looks like a team that can beat you in a number of different ways and play complimentary football.
And, you know, yeah, they look really tough as well.
I don't want to say Florida State is tough without saying the same thing about Miami,
who just outmuscled Notre Dame on both lines of scrimmage.
So that's the two biggest things I learned about that team.
You know, in terms of Clemson, I guess just, and, you know, you mentioned losing your top receiver early in the game.
That isn't nothing, all right?
But I think I also learned that I still have reservations about, you know, this version of Clemson from the past few years about actually winning those big non-conference games.
That's what they, you know, failed at time after time a year ago.
And I'm now wondering if they're going to be able to turn that page and take the next step.
Kay Klubnick is a prime example of you pout them on the butt, they crap in your hand.
The minute that you give K K. Klubnick a compliment, when everybody's doubting him saying, oh, there's no way he looks stale, he looks like he doesn't know what he's doing out there.
His decision making is extremely flawed. He goes out there and dominates the ACC.
And even against Texas, you can look at that game last year.
And if you blame that loss on K K K Kovnik, I would say, all right, fine, let's watch the defensive tape.
let's watch how the run fits happen.
Let's watch how many tackles were missed by those defenders and let's go from there.
Let's see if we can have a serious discussion about this.
And yet, when it's time to do your little one-two this season,
like you said, losing your star receiver early is not nothing.
However, you still have to perform at a little bit higher of a level.
And again, that's supporting cats.
I tell people all the time, quarterback is not the most important position.
quarterback isn't just the most important position of football.
It's also the most dependent.
It's dependent on guys to make big plays.
Let's just say that receiver from Miami does not make that one-hand catch.
Let's say he decides the ball is behind them,
alligator arms it, and it keeps going another two, three yards.
What happens to that ball, Donna?
Aidan Schuller probably picks it off if that happens.
He picks it off.
Does that or does that not change the tenor of that entire game?
Changes it a ton.
Oh, okay.
You know, there were a bunch of plays from Clemson receivers where I'm like, hey, yes, Cade has not played a great game.
You have to help him there.
And I'm not even asking for him to make that kind of cast.
That was a highlight real ESP and top 10 cash.
I'm not even asking for that.
If the ball is going over your shoulder, you're a receiver at one of the best universities in the nation, you're a receiver getting paid premium money to do what you do.
premium money means premium plays.
You get paid more than a receiver at Central Michigan
because you're supposed to do things that that receiver of Central Michigan can't do
with all the respect to the flying seas.
I just found out they changed their team name recently.
They did?
Yeah, they changed it.
You know, it's a lot of things going on with, you know, groups and things, all that.
But you've got to come down with that ball.
And that wasn't the only drop that I saw in that game.
There were multiple drops where I'm like, that hurt you.
So, you know, there's that.
And as far as Miami and, and,
Florida State, Miami proved to me who they are and who I thought they were coming into the season.
Florida State, however, Alabama did not look like they were trying very hard in that football game at all.
And I'm going to use one gentleman who's going viral right now for his lack of effort as the example, Mr. Bray Hubbard.
My grandmother does not understand anything about football, but she said, who is this?
sorry, boy, they got back there.
He just jogging and getting ran over.
I said, grandma, who are you talking about?
She said the white boy, you know the one.
I said, there's only one white guy on their secondary.
I can figure that out very easily.
And he's going viral.
He has 70-year-olds who know little to nothing about football
other than the final score saying,
who is this boy stinking it up?
So, you know, Florida State, they did their one-two to win the game,
but also Alabama did a lot to say, hey, you don't want this game.
We're not serious about this game.
You know, we're good here.
Yeah.
So we'll take a look at the deeper tracks on these power rankings.
And here's a question.
Do they rank North Carolina low enough?
You want to keep it locked right here.
Kent and Gibbs from Lockdown Wolfpack.
I'm Alex Dono from Lockdown Cain's.
We're only getting started on this brand new episode of LockdowneCC.

All right, so Kenton, again, I was looking through dozens of power rankings.
Most of them are similar with a few differences.
right. Some of them actually have Florida State at number one. Most have Miami,
number one, Miami, Florida State, and Clemson, one, two, and three. I'm looking at one from the
Tallahassee Democrat newspaper where they've got Miami, Florida State, then Clemson.
Then they've got Georgia Tech at number four, which I think is fair to have, at least for this week,
Georgia Tech above Louisville at number five, because, you know, Georgia Tech won against a power four
opponent and ran all over Colorado on the road, whereas Louisville beat Eastern Kentucky,
they blew them out.
But based on the quality of win, I agree with having Georgia Tech ranked a spot above
Louisville for this week.
Yeah, I think that's more than fair.
And also, it's week one, people.
There will be other opportunities.
Georgia Tech looked phenomenal.
They did exactly what I thought they were going to do.
And they saved me from going winless on the week in terms of pick.
so thank you, Georgia Tech.
Yeah.
I appreciate you guys.
But, you know, that in all seriousness,
they deserve to be where they are.
And even if you feel like they don't,
it's week one.
Most of these teams that we're discussing today,
most of these matchups that we're saying,
does this team belong in front of this team?
Guess what they get the chance to do, Donald?
Line it up.
Yeah, right.
They get the chance to line it up and show,
I'm better than you or you're better than me
for almost all these teams.
Yeah.
And in reality, only a handful.
of these teams played like real competitive games.
A lot of them played against, you know, directional schools.
So again, you had Louisville at number five who beat Eastern Kentucky, 51 to 17.
SMU at number six, as Kenton pointed out, they didn't maybe look as good as they should have against East Texas A&M.
They won 42 to 13, though.
Pittsburgh at number seven, they beat Duquesne, 61 to 9.
Duke at number eight, they beat Elon 45 to 17.
Now that's another one.
I did watch that game.
I didn't watch the SMU game,
but I was watching Duke versus Elon
because I had money on Elon to cover like a 39 point spread or whatever it was.
And it was like, what was it like 10, 10 in the first half?
Like Duke did not pull away till late.
It took a fight for their life in that first half.
And then the second half, they woke up unthawed and kind of, you know,
shook it out a little bit.
But I like to tell people all the time in games like that,
they're worrisome because FBS teams de facto have a built-in advantage over FCS because they have
more depth.
You have more scholarships to give up.
So naturally, when their guys start wearing down and need some air and all that, you can say,
all right, threes, go ahead, get in there.
All right, yep, we're ready for this.
We're good here.
So I'm a little concerned about that, but Duke has been, again, historically good for Duke these past
couple of years. So I'm not ready to throw the baby out with the bathwater because of a lackluster
first half of week one performance. Yeah, same here. They have NC State at number nine.
You know, like you mentioned, Kent, and it was, they had trouble closing out that game,
but they did beat ECU 24 to 17. I can see the way you're shaking your head and rolling your eyes.
You didn't feel great about that week one dub. NC State belongs here. You cannot start off with a
17-0 lead and then win the game 24 to 17.
Yeah.
There were plenty of teams this weekend that showed us when you have your foot on an inferior
team's neck, you do not take it off and say, oh, let them up, let them breathe,
let them breathe.
No, no, no, no.
You press down firmly until the doctor says they're gone.
That's what you do.
That's what you do.
NC State did not have the killer instinct to do it and let ECU right back in the game.
A shame.
A shame.
A shame I am to be an NC State fan.
I'm joking.
I'm joking.
It was just a very disappointing finish.
C.J. Bailey played well, though.
He did.
He did.
Yeah.
So after NC State at 9, they got Syracuse at 10.
You know, they played a real opponent.
They played at number 24 at the time, Tennessee.
But that was a bad result.
They lost, was it 42 to, they have the wrong score here on the Tallah.
I think it was 42 to 20.
They said 42 to 13.
So like Syracuse's offense looked okay.
The defense was a hot mess.
They have Cal at number 11.
I was pretty impressed with with JKS.
They're starting.
We're trying to make JKS a thing.
So we don't have to say Jaron Kiave, Sangapulatele, every time.
He looked good in his first start.
What about Kent and Virginia Tech at number 12?
You know, they hung around with South.
Carolina, it was like 10 to 8 for a good stretch before they ended up losing 24 to 11, but just
didn't still not seeing enough explosive plays from Kairn drones in that offense. I don't know
what happened to them since 2023. I am sorry to tell you, the rest of the nation is starting to be
on the same side that I am where they're like, I'm not doing this Groundhogs Day thing anymore
with Kairn drones. I'm not doing it. I'm not doing it. I don't care if he has the tools. I don't
care if on paper you say this guy should be able to take over and dominate games is the
dominance of the games in the room with us oh it's not then no can't believe in this can't
keep buying this product which a lot of the nation is saying right now and i get it so then after
virginia tech at 12 virginia at 13 they beat coastal carolina 48 7 they got boston college 14 i mean
they had for Fordham's probably pretty bad but they took care of business
at 166 to 10.
I thought from the Boston college side, they looked pretty good.
But again, the opponent makes it hard to judge.
And then they've got North Carolina at 15.
Now, I, listen, I don't know.
I mean, 48 to 14.
I mean, TCU is a pretty good team,
but you lose 48 to 14 at home.
And outside of like your backup quarterback who came in off of,
you know, catastrophic injury last year and looked like decent
against like the TCU third and fourth stringers at the end of the game,
there was nothing positive about that performance.
I mean, yeah, I mean, North Carolina,
they were, what, two and a half, three and a half point favorites at home?
They lose 48 to freaking 14.
Like that was a disaster.
I feel like North Carolina at 15 out of 17 is generous.
Wow.
So you're saying TCU covered the spread.
Great.
So they covered it comfortably.
So I'm very confused.
by them being just 15 because while you can say oh scraping by against kentassau state ain't
great i don't think people understand how thoroughly unc was dominated here if you if you take away
what happened when the backups got in the game in terms of tc u's backups you are legit looking
at a 48 or what was it 44 37 to 7 or 44 to 7 type deal i don't think
Backup for TCU scored.
When Hoover got out of the game, I don't think they scored again.
So I'm confused here because I don't care how bad you think Kennesaw State is.
I don't believe that Kennesaw State's back starters are that bad to the level where, I mean, hey, you're sitting up here and having a 44-27 loss to TCU.
at home, might I add, and one of the most anticipated,
and one of the most hyped up,
and one of the most star-studded debuts in college football history.
I mean, you know, Michael Jordan and Randy Moss, I get it,
even though Michael Jordan was an NC state fan
and somehow ended up at UNC.
Interesting how that happened.
Lawrence Taylor.
Yeah, Lawrence Taylor.
He's a UNC grad.
Makes sense.
but then me a ham
unc grad makes sense but then you had
the likes of Randy Maugh in the building
that brother graduated for Marshall
yeah yeah
he's a Marshall grad and we're
sitting here with with
chapel bill and all this good stuff
going on and then this blowout
happens and we're sitting here saying
well they're still not worse than Wake Forest
the only team the only team
that actually I don't even see a serious argument for them being better
than Stanford right now because at least Stanford
was competitive.
Exactly.
At least they got out there and pince somebody.
It was close.
They had to fly all the way out to Hawaii,
which even from Northern California,
it was like a four-hour time difference?
You still got quite a time difference in there,
and at least they look competitive.
Even on the road, they look competitive,
as opposed to a Carolina team that got the brakes beat off them.
I don't understand why they are not dead last in the conference because they embarrass the conference on a national stage in front of the entire world.
And I can't find an ACC team that put on a worse performance than them.
They could not do anything right.
They couldn't block.
They couldn't catch.
They couldn't tackle.
But you know what, Donald?
They couldn't stop the run.
They couldn't run the ball.
They couldn't pass the ball.
They couldn't stop the pass.
But other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?
That's where we were with this team.
and somehow they're at 15.
The chapel bill effect still reigns apparently.
Yeah, so rounding out that top 17, you know,
power ranking on the Tallahassee Democrat newspaper.
After North Carolina at 15, Wake Forest at 16,
you mentioned Kennesaw State.
That's who Wake Forest beat 10 to 9,
which was, you know, not exactly a signature win.
But at least they got the dub.
At least they got a dub.
In Stanford, who came in dead last at 17.
But like Kenton mentioned, it was competitive.
They lost 23 to 20 at Hawaii.
That was week zero.
They didn't play week one.
Coming up next, Florida State pulled off a huge win for the ACC.
So why did the conference punish them for it?
You want to keep it locked right here.
We're not done yet on this brand new episode.

All right.
So Kent, Florida State now, you know, you and I knew about this because, you know, we
at the commissioner's forum in July at the ACC kickoff, probably like a lot of, and I probably
wouldn't have known about it if not for being in the room when the commissioner talked about it.
A lot of people probably didn't realize the ACC as a new rule they put into effect this season.
They put it into effect for football, men's and women's basketball.
If your fans rush the field or storm the court after, you know, a win or after whatever,
you're going to get fined for it.
Now, they do this, and it makes sense.
And I know storming courts and rushing fields, it's, you know, it's one of those college football and college basketball traditions.
You pull off a big win, your fans go crazy. But, you know, in reality, especially in the world we live in today, it creates safety concerns and hazards, right?
The players, coaches, referees, other fans, it can put them in bad situations.
So the ACC is cracking down on it. If you rush the field or storm the court, your first offense is $50,000 fine.
your second offense is 100K and so on.
So, you know, what did Florida State fans do?
And I, you know, listen, I sympathize, right?
You were two in 10 last year.
You upset Alabama at home week one.
Fans went crazy.
They storm the field.
Florida State gets fined $50,000 for it.
Now, I'm not saying I condone, you know,
creating that situation.
But I do not blame Florida State fans one bit.
And I would imagine for FSU,
that's $50,000.
is well spent for that celebration.
Absolutely.
I mean, you asked some of those individual fans,
was it worth $50,000 and they would say, absolutely.
Especially because they don't have to pay it.
Absolutely, absolutely.
The deal here is this.
This is the most litigious country in the world in terms of America.
When you create situations for potential, you know,
lawsuits and all that good stuff, you have to do something to mitigate that and say,
hey, we tried discouraging this.
We put up the sign that.
said, don't do this.
We are the same country that had McDonald's boiling their coffee way too hot.
And then a lady got burned because it was between their thighs and all of a sudden,
there's this big rush to call her an idiot as if that McDonald's coffee was not way too hot.
And as if it was still not a great idea, even if it's normal temperature, to have coffee down there.
So it's a situation where the ACC said, we are going to curb this.
We are not going to have a situation where fans, where teams,
where if Alabama were to say,
hey, the ACC did nothing to discourage this.
The ACC cannot say,
I bought crap.
We did what we could.
We said, we will find you if you do this.
And we carried out the fine.
What more do you want from us?
You know, because Alabama is a team that I believe
their last eight losses,
the opposing teams fans stormed the field.
So, I mean, you know,
it's that type of deal where beating the tide means everything,
which with the boy at the wheel,
I'm not sure how much longer that'll be the case.
but, you know, it means a lot to teams right now.
So I look at this and I say, hey, fans, do your little one, two, obviously be safe.
Have a good time.
Enjoy yourself, but be safe.
Don't go getting in no other team's players faces.
Ah, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, we beat you because I'm telling you,
you have no clue how strong they are compared to you.
You don't have a solid idea of how much stronger than you,
that defensive back that looks like he only goes into the locker room for the mirror,
is than you. You just don't know. So, you know, I get it from all sides. I get the fans
wanting to have fun. I get the ACC for having a lawsuit. And Florida State, that 50,
that 50 bans is nothing. They coughed that out on forks for it after school a bit sometimes. So
they definitely aren't having problems there. All right. So I'm looking at week two football
matchups involving ACC teams. There are four of them that stand out. You obviously,
early in the season, you got some of these, you know, non-competent.
competitive games. I mean, Miami hosts Bethune Cookman, Florida State hosts East Texas A&M, Clemson, host Troy.
But the games that stand out to me, Kenton. We have Duke is hosting number 11, Illinois. Huge
opportunity for Manny Diaz and company with Illinois favored by two and a half points.
SMU at home favored by three points against Baylor. You know, Baylor had a tough debut against Auburn last week.
We have Virginia Tech is hosting Vanderbilt,
ACC versus SEC with Virginia Tech favored by a point and a half.
And we have a conference game that doesn't count in conference.
Is that what we're doing here, Kenton, with your NC State Wolfpack hosting Virginia?
Explain to me how that's an ACC matchup,
but it's not considered a conference game this year.
So Dave Doran wants to get ahead of the whole Schedule Power 14.
Schedule more powerful teams thing.
And in order to do that, he had to drop, I believe it was App State off to schedule
and schedule a power 14.
Most power 14s were taken, and so they started looking at conference and saying,
you know what?
Maybe we can do a home and home with Virginia that would not count as part of our
conference schedule, even though it is, in fact, a conference matchup.
Any of these other games stand out to you?
I mean, Duke, Duke versus Illinois, Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt.
How do you think these games are going to play out?
Oh, man.
I'm looking at that Duke versus Illinois game real close.
Let me tell you why.
Brett Bilema, we know he brings the funk.
He brings a physical team wherever he goes.
That's going to be a team that's going to want to punch you in a face again and again and again.
No finesse.
No, no, you know, no cutesy stuff with Brett Bilema.
He comes from that old Barry Alvarez.
that old downhill, we need us at least 1,500 yard rusher in order to be good tree.
And then you've got the master disguise, Manny Diaz, where all the things that he does defensively,
a lot of people think that he just disguises the secondary well.
When you know how that works out for him, it's because he disguises the fronts as well.
He disguises the blitzes as well.
You think that you know where everybody's going.
And then all of a sudden at the snap, you're like, what?
Where to him?
It was a D-Ley-Lan right.
in front of me. Where did the guy go? I am very intrigued to see which style wins that game.
I'm also intrigued to see if Daria Mitz has kind of settled in because that first half,
he looked wildly uncomfortable. Things just were not clicking. They were trying their best,
and we all knew that their running game was going to be a work in progress because of losing
your top backs from last year and everything. But the passing game as well was another thing that we were
like, new quarterback, and they don't have their top receivers there either in terms of who the guys
where last year, I'm very intrigued by this game.
You know, this could be a game where Duke shocks the world, as we saw from week one,
nothing's impossible.
This could be a game where the fighting a line eyes stroll all through Wallace Way Stadium,
like it's the Commodores with an easy Sunday morning.
Well, we'll take a closer look at these games before the weekend coming up.
