On this episode of Locked on ACC,
we're going to discuss the players of the week from week seven,
who's going to repeat in week eight?
Top ACC players here at the midpoint of the season.
We're going to talk week seven takeaways,
look ahead to week eight,
including as we introduced Kent and Gibbs from Lockdown Wolfpack.
I am Alex Dono from Lockdown Keynes.
You know, one of the teams that has done better so far this year than we expected, Kenton, are the Clemson Tigers.
They're not undefeated overall, but they are undefeated in conference.
And honestly, since they've started their conference schedule, I would argue Clemson has been probably the most convincing team in the ACC.
And they continued that in week seven with a dominant performance against Wake Forest.
Absolutely.
And I can admit, I was wrong about this team.
I was wrong about this team.
I thought it was over.
I thought, hey,
dabble doesn't want to adjust to modern times.
Clemson is cooked.
They're playing phenomenal football in every facet of the game.
And you have to give them their props, their credit, their love.
Because even if you want to argue, well, they're not beating anybody.
You can only play who's in front of you and they're in conference play.
If their conference schedule is what it is, tell the rest of the ACC to get better because they are kicking ass and taking names in a major way,
making guys like me look very stupid who believe, hey, it's over, it's done.
They don't want to adjust.
They don't want to adapt.
They don't want to use the portal.
They don't want to do all the things it will take to be a successful college football team in 2024.
And they say, hey, we got to have success.
We'll be just followed out.
Yeah.
And, you know, Clemson, I'll say they have a couple of advantages when it comes to reaching the ACC championship game, Kenton,
because they've already played four games of their conference schedule and their four and
whereas Miami, who is unbeaten in conference right now, just 2 and 0, SMU, just 2 and 0 in conference so far.
So Clemson is already halfway down their conference schedule.
Every team plays eight conference games.
But, you know, Miami, obviously, they've had great moments this year.
They're unbeaten overall.
SMU also unbeaten in conference, a one loss overall team like Clemson.
And one of the hot button topics that's been brought up a lot, Kent, is we could see a scenario
this year. This wouldn't factor in for Pitt, who's also undefeated, because Pitt, they're going to face Clemson later this year.
But we could see a scenario where Miami, SMU, and Clemson, none of which play each other this year, all go undefeated in conference.
And then I've been, you know, doing the reading and trying to figure it out this week.
What happens if all those teams go unbeaten in the ACC and none of them play each other?
I think I found the tiebreaker.
Would you like to hear it?
I absolutely would love to hear it because there's been a lot of, well, it's a coin
talk.
It's the rankings.
It's the, I feel like the answer is neither.
A rock paper,
scissors tournament is actually the answer.
Can you believe that?
Oh, I thought it was flipping coins like they did on Friday night lights to see who gets in
the state playoffs.
So here's the real scenario because, you know,
obviously the top tiebreakers to figure out which two teams get into the conference
championship game head to head, but they don't play each other. So that's out the window.
Record against common opponents. Well, if they all go beaten in conference, then that,
you throw that out the window as well. So to pick out the top two out of those three,
it would be, if they all go unbeaten in conference, it would be the winning percentage
in conference of their ACC opponents. So it's completely out of their control, Kenton.
that you're at the mercy of the teams that you've played, right?
What are their winning percentages?
That's what you're at the mercy of.
And, you know, I think, you know, we're only halfway through the year.
I think Clemson has the edge in that at the moment, but got a lot of football left to play.
So you're going to see, you're going to see teams like rooting for teams that they've already beaten to run the table to try to give them a stronger conference record.
But let's go through what these teams have left.
I mentioned the big advantage that Clemson has, Kenton, is the fact that they played more ACC games than Miami or SMU have played to this point.
So left on Clemson's schedule.
Clemson still plays at home against Virginia, at home against Louisville, at Virginia, at Virginia Tech, and at Pitt.
Then they've got two non-conference games to wrap up the schedule versus the Citadel and versus South Carolina.
Those games will not factor in.
So, you know, it's not a cake.
walk the rest of the way for them, Kenton. But again, Clemson will likely be favored in every single
game that they play left this year, including those four in conference games. Oh, absolutely. Like you
talked about half of their conference schedule is already done. So not only do they have more room for
error in terms of like, man, they can be a lesser team against the Citadel and still win that game,
but they can also have room for error in that even if South Carolina takes them out back and
spanks them like they stole some, guess what they?
doesn't affect your conference record it doesn't matter if everybody else runs the table except them
you're still looking at a situation where SMU has a loss out of conference Clemson has two losses
out of conference and Miami would be undefeated but we would still be down to the same scenario of
well wait a minute now everybody's undefeating that conference looks like we've got to pull the records
of all of your opponents all right so let me give you the six remaining
for SMU and the six remaining from Miami.
And you tell me which you think is the tougher road.
It's all ACC the rest of the way for both of those teams.
So here's the six left for SMU.
They're at Stanford, at Duke, home against number 20 pit,
home against Boston College, at Virginia, and home against Cal,
where Miami has at Louisville this weekend,
home against Florida State.
It is a rivalry game, even though FSU's been
terrible, that's probably going to be the best game that Florida State plays all season,
home against Duke, at Georgia Tech, home against Wake Forest, and at Syracuse.
Is it a little tougher for Miami, a little tougher for SMU?
What do you think?
This is what you like to call a three-point spread where the team that was favored by three
wins by a field goal.
It's a push, ladies and gentlemen.
These two teams, it's tough for me to look here and say, oh, man, this team has a
Defendant Advantage or this team, they both have a tough game or two or a game or two where you could feasibly see them tripping up.
But I don't think either one of these teams has a necessarily a mountain to climb in front of them.
And I will say this.
The thing that I find most interesting about this going forward is I think both of these teams are in that zone where it's all about you.
It's no longer about your opponent, right?
I think that there's a difference when you know, hey, even if we play our best game, they play their best game, we're kind of screwed.
That's a different mindset than if we play a best game, they play a best game.
We've got a damn good shot at this thing.
It's a very big difference there.
And that's where I think both of these teams are, not just talent-wise, but also confidence-wise.
You talk about SMU and all their line and how are they going to hold up on the interior and all that.
They held up well enough against Louisville.
And Louisville has one of the better fronts in the nation.
And they have shown it time and time and time again.
So you look at this situation and you say for both of these teams,
they are at that point where it's like,
don't beat yourselves from this point going forward.
Just be who you are.
Be the best that you can be day in, day out,
and you'll be fine.
And that's why I look at both of these stresses.
I'm saying it's sort of a push because both of them have one or two tough games.
Me and one of them have a game.
I look at it.
I'm like, I don't know how Miami's going to pull that one out of her.
I don't know what the Pony Express is going to do there.
But hopefully they'll be all right.
Now, if you were to match up Clemson versus SMU and Clemson versus Miami on a neutral site right now, chances are we're going to get one of those matchups in December, but there's a lot of football left.
Like, if I were to try to predict the point spread on a neutral site, if it was Clemson versus Miami, I'd probably say Clemson would be favored by maybe one and a half to two and a half points, something like that.
if it were Clemson versus SMU, I'd probably say maybe five and a half points, Clemson.
So I would probably expect, this is just my prediction.
I think Clemson would be favored at a neutral site against either of those teams.
I think it would probably be a closer line, though, against Miami.
Yeah, and at the end of the day, we still have so much football left that we can't even,
you know, like even if all three of these teams do run the table from here,
we've seen teams look good and winning.
we've seen teams look bad in winning, right?
We've seen teams dominate and winning.
We've seen teams like, you're squeaking by, you're doing enough.
But, you know, it's getting close.
So, of course, in terms of the betting lines and all that little fluctuate,
but I think either way you cut it or slice it,
there is nothing SMU could do to make themselves a closer,
a, you know, the points where it would be smaller than Miami.
Even if Miami went on to lose two games in conference,
like, and we were talking only hypothetical.
The hypothetical game between Miami and Clemson would have a closer point spread than what people would believe of SMU and Clemson, unless them boys from Dallas absolutely steamroll everybody in front of them.
There's no way that they would have a closer point spread than mine.
Well, we still want to talk a little bit more week seven, look ahead to week eight coming up now.
SMU and Miami both had biweeks in week seven.
I mentioned Clemson had a dominant win against Wake Forest.
they were down 7-0, but then they never, never trailed again at that point.
ACC players of the week were crowned.
We had the Eli Holstein reign of terror come to an end.
We finally have a new ACC rookie of the week.
You know what you want to do, my friends?

Make sure you check out Kenton and Grayson do an awesome job on Lockdown Wolfpack.
I host Locked on Cains.
I'm going to be having a crossover episode with Dalton Pence from Lockdown Louisville tomorrow.
So we have that look forward to.
Who does NC State have this weekend?
You guys doing a crossover this week?
You know, I highly doubt that we'll be doing a crossover
seeing as how while the Cal algorithm has gone crazy,
it's exploded all over the TL and everybody's loving it.
We don't have a locked on cow host that we have, you know,
I was going to say you got to get Lawrence on,
but I think Lawrence is traveling this week for his lecture tour, I think.
Yeah, yeah, you know, Lawrence is a celebrity.
You know, we small potatoes, you know what I mean?
Anytime you get lowers, you work with a good day.
We've had too many good days already.
Oh, man.
All right.
So going back to last week, we've had the ACC players of the week have been ground.
Yeah, I mentioned Cade Clubb Nick.
He was quarterback of the week, 309 yards and three touchdowns against Wake Forest.
Jamal Haynes of Georgia Tech running back of the week.
He scored basically a walk-off 68-yard touchdown.
to beat North Carolina. That was awesome. And Haynes, you know, in addition of that great play,
put up good numbers in that one as well. Jackson Meeks, Syracuse receiver, had a career
high 11 catches for 116 yards. He was the receiver of the week. Kalin Rutledge out of Georgia
Tech was the offensive linemen of the week. Defensive lineman was Jimmy Scott from Pitt,
who had three and a half TFL and three sacks in the close win against Cal. Justin Barron from
Syracuse was the linebacker of the week.
Defensive back was Jonas Sanker from Virginia.
He played a great game despite the fact that Virginia did not pull it off against Louisville.
Ben Salz, the place kicker from Pitt, was the specialist of the week.
He hit a 58-yard field goal in that one.
And how about this one, Kenton?
What may still be renamed the Eli Holstein ACC Rookie of the Week award,
because Holstein had won it every time he hit the field prior.
Holstein did not win it.
The trophy rightfully this week,
rookie of the week goes to Louisville running back, Isaac Brown,
who had a big performance, 20 carries for 146 yards
and two touchdowns against Virginia.
Louisville would not have won that game without the way Isaac Brown played.
So he, first time this year in a game that Eli Holstein did not play in,
we have a different rookie of the week.
Yeah, and not only that.
about Holstein struggled mightily in this game.
This was his worst game of the season by a mile.
I mean, that Calde defense, I'll tell you what, that's a stingy of a secondary as I have
ever, ever seen out of a team that is 0 and 3 in conference.
I have never seen anything like this before.
It's like, you throw that ball in the air against Cal, there's a chance that is going
the other way, and yet they still can't buy a win in conference.
But who knows?
I'm talking big like they don't play NC State.
who's also winless in conference this week.
But in all seriousness, shout out to the young man from Louisville
because he did absolutely carry the man.
Like you said, there's no way Louisville wins that game without him.
And he made some spectacular plays in terms of breaking tackles,
in terms of yards after contact,
in terms of finishing runs off in very, very meaningful ways.
So, you know, shout out to Brown.
He deserves it.
Eli Holstein is going to be pissed.
He's going to have his revenge game next week
because I know that young man.
is salty about his performance in this last year.
So we look at the schedule coming up this week, Kenton.
We've got Thursday through Saturday.
We've got ACC football because we have a Thursday nighter and a Friday nighter this week.
Out of these two underdogs is you have Boston College are seven point underdogs at Virginia Tech on Thursday night.
Florida State, just three point underdogs on the road at Duke.
This week, which of those two dogs do you think is more likely to pull it out on Thursday night or Friday night?
Florida State has never lost to Duke.
Yeah.
It's basketball season.
People are talking about Cooper flag.
People are no longer worried about Duke football.
They lost the game.
You know, everything is saying that Florida State is going to get it done.
And that's exactly why I'm going the opposite direction with this thing.
It is clear to me, Boston College is going to pull it off at Virginia Tech.
Virginia Tech has been such a disappointment.
It's such a letdown at multiple points this season.
And also, Jordan Travis ain't walking through that damn door.
He was the one that gave Duke fits the last few times they played.
That's right.
He was spectacular every time they played Duke.
But unfortunately, he's not walking through the door.
Johnny Wilson ain't coming through.
Keon Kovinae coming through.
None of those guys are going to be there.
And I'm sorry, but DJU has nothing for Manny Diaz's defense.
Donovan has a Rocco.
And that record.
Well, no, it's Brock Tober.
They got Brock Glenn this week.
Oh, yeah.
And here's the thing.
Brock Glenn looked a lot better than DJ.
Look, I think we can agree with that.
He did.
He did.
But there was a reason you were sitting that long.
Like, there was a reason that they're not that kind of which.
Sometimes you look good because the film's not out on you yet.
And the concepts that you like.
They haven't really seen it at a high level defensively yet.
I am telling you right now, Duke scores their first win over Florida State ever, ever, ever, ever, ever this week.
But Boston College, I'll tell you what, into the sand, man, it may get spooky up there in Blacksburg for Virginia Tech.
I love what you did there because you had me going.
Like you had me going with that swerve.
That was, I don't know if that was a swerve or a heel turn if I'm looking for the right program.
wrestling terminology, but you have me going.
On Saturday, we've got
number six, Miami at Louisville
at noon. Like, I feel like that that's
probably the best game in the conference this week
and it's a nooner, which is a little
questionable to me. We got 10th rank
Clemson hosting Virginia at noon.
Yukon hosting Wake
Forest at noon. 3.30. We've got
number 12, Notre Dame at Georgia
Tech. Notre Dame 11.5 point
favorites on the road. We've got
Cal favorite by 10
at home against NC State this
week and we've got 21st ranked SMU or 16 and a half point favorites at Stanford.
I'll also add another spread in there I didn't mention number six Miami are four and a half
point favorites at Louisville.
So like the Miami versus Louisville, that's the game this weekend, right?
That's the most pivotal game in the conference.
The Snellenberger Bowl, the game for the boot, baby.
Let me tell you something.
First of all, I love any game that's played for it, I really do.
And we all know how much Howard Snellenberger meant to both of these programs, God rest of so.
What a coach, right?
What a man, all that good stuff.
But this game is not only going to be one of the more interesting games, it's going to be one of the more impactful either way it goes.
If Miami wins this game, that clearly takes Louisville out.
That clearly says, hey, Louisville, you've got no shot at doing anything but sport.
Their chances are still alive.
It's just on life support.
You're going to need some help.
And also in a moment like this, you can create your own help by,
beating of Miami. You can do that in a very meaningful way. But if they lose this game,
all right, that's it. That goal is done, not happening. I believe that would eliminate them
from contingent for a 10-game, 10-win season as well, I believe. So, you know, they're four and two.
Yeah, yeah. So, or a 10-game regular season, rather. They could still get there with a bowl game
or if things go wrong and they got to the ACC championship, which would be nothing short of an act of
God at that point. But you get my point here. I think that that game has a ton of intrigue to it.
But I'm going to tell you, this garbage bowl with the Cal algorithm in NC State, that game
may be the most entertaining because Cal doesn't know how to blow a team out. They don't know how
to do it. It doesn't matter who you are. And, you know, they say that that's the, the wokeness in
cow that they want to equally distribute points so much so that they wasn't, you know, they're giving
you the DEI touchdown. You know. So.
So with that, with that is fine.
I really do want to want to see like, is that game going to be as close as we think?
And can that defensive backfield get to a freshman quarterback that we know has, he's a freshman.
He's prone to make the freshman mistake.
But can Cal capitalize?
Because time and time again, they play up to opponents.
They play down to opponent.
So which Cal are we going to get into?
That's why I don't think they're going to cover the double digit spread because like you tell Cal about a point spread.
They think you're talking communism.
You got to spread the points around.
That's what they think you're talking about out there.
I think it's going to be a very close game.
So there have been standout players in the ACC this year.
I was looking through ESPN put out a list of top 25 college football players,
regardless of conference.
And there's only two ACC players on the list.
I feel like there should be at least one more.
Let's go through that when we come back.
You guys want to keep it locked right here.
We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC.
We're certainly not done with FanDuel.
Guys, this is America's number one sports book.
And if you've heard us talking about the point spreads for this weekend, is the
Calgarytham going to cover a double-digit spread?
Are SMU going to cover minus 16.5 points out west at Stanford?
Miami, four and a half point favorites at Louisville.
Is Boston College going to cover that seven-point spread?
There's seven-point underdogs at Virginia Tech.
you need to check it all out at Fandul, America's number one sportsbook.

So, yeah, I'm looking through this top 25 list from ESPN.
Let me give you the whole top 25 midseason players list.
They've got it number 25, San Jose Statewide receiver Nick Nash.
Here's an ACC player, defensive back, Noel Williams of Cal,
who's got six interceptions already this year.
That's a full season worth of Iantees into half a season.
So no argument with Noel Williams being on there.
And then you've got to go pretty far to find the next ACC player.
Let me just let me skip into that top 10.
Actually, top 11, because I want to give, even though he's playing for Ohio State, who I have no love for, South Florida is Jeremiah Smith, who's having a very good freshman season.
The guy's a freak.
He's number 11 on the list.
Number 10 is Oregon defensive lineman, Derek Harmon, Michigan State transfer.
Number nine is Alabama freshman receiver Ryan Williams, who's just a phenomenon.
Texas A&M defensive lineman, Nick Scorton, is number eight.
Ole Miss receiver, Trey Harris, is number seven.
LSU offensive tackle, Will Campbell, is number six.
Oregon quarterback, Dylan Gabriel, number five.
Texas offensive lineman Kelvin Banks Jr. is number four.
Colorado, two-way phenomenon, Travis Hunter, is number three.
Then you got Cam Ward, Miami quarterback, Cam Ward,
who's already got 2,200 passing yards, 20 touchdowns.
He's at number two.
And then Ashton Genty, who's putting up video game numbers in the Boise State backfield,
is number one.
So you only have Noel Williams at 24.
And Cam Ward at number two.
I feel like there's some possible snubs in there, Kenton,
like Donovan Ezoraku, the defensive lineman from Boston College.
He's got nine sacks already this year.
Like that's a season's worth of sacks and a half.
season already. I feel like there's others. Even Cade Clubnick's having a great year at quarterback
for Clemson. I feel like there's others in the ACC who could have been in that top 25. Xavier Restrepo
at Miami having a great year at receiver. There are many, many guys who I feel like belong in this
conversation or not. Donovan is Rock would be in one of them. And I'm going to tell you something,
when I look at the defensive line play in the ACC, it has been stellar. There have been defensive
linemen showing their tail from the best teams of the conversation.
to the worst team in the conference.
I'm looking at you, David Van, who has been phenomenal for Insies Day.
He's been more impactful than the stats could ever possibly say,
because if you look at almost every big play in their games defensively,
you look at the pick six against Tennessee.
He was the one who got in there and inflicted the pressure and all that.
But very seriously, back to Donovan Azarocco for a minute,
he is not just eating against one or two teams, you know.
He's not just showing up and showing out in one or two games.
he has shown up every single game and been a game plan record.
If you don't plan for Donovan, don't worry.
Don't have a plan for you, my brother in Christ.
He's got something for you.
If you don't got something for him,
he has been phenomenal off the edge this year.
So I really don't get how he isn't one of your best 25 players
other than the fact that it's not sexy to put him on the list.
He's not said he doesn't play for a big brand.
He doesn't play a glamour position.
He's just not it.
Either does Noel Will.
Williams at Cal though, and he got in.
And that is a very interesting counterpoint there.
However, I will say this.
To me, to me at least,
cornerback is becoming a much more glamour position than edge rushers are,
which is I don't know when this switch happened,
but it happened overnight where we just looked up and everybody's like,
eh, the corners get all the edits, they get all the love,
they get all the social media stuff.
And D. Laman, it's just like, oh, you know, it's just like Charlie Brown.
I got a tree.
I got a turkey.
I got a rock.
That's what Ezraku got.
He got a rock because the man should have been on this list.
Yeah, no, I agree 100%.
So hopefully second half of the season in the back nine,
more ACC players get some love.
Because in only seeing two in the top 25,
I was a little bit disappointed by that.
I was hoping to see some more players get the nod.
But guys, make sure you hit the thumbs up button.

We are going to assemble the squad tomorrow, and I'm sure our guy, Jackson Holeser,
is going to want to take a victory lap Kenton after the head-to-head win.
I'm just hoping I'm hoping I don't lose to Syracuse or I make it sound like I play for
the team.
I hope Miami doesn't lose to Syracuse at the end of the year, because then I got to hear,
and you actually did play for NC State, so you would have more of a claim than I would
about the result of that game.
Gave him three tendons, but you know, it is what it is.
Things happen as they do, and it's a disappointing result.
We move.
We move on.
We sure do.
We'll move on to another great episode coming up tomorrow.
We'll talk to you then and another episode of Lockdown ACC,
part of the awesome Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
