Just rip the band-aid off. North Carolina and Bill Belichick need to part ways.
You are Locked-on ACC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Hello, everyone, and welcome in a locked-on ACC. I'm Jackson Holeser, the host of Locked-on, Syracuse,
and thank you for making Locked-on-ACC, your first listen of every single.
day here on the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day. Of course, we're always free and
available wherever you get your podcasts. And who knows, maybe Bill Belichick in a few weeks from now,
we'll be hosting Locked-on ACC with myself. Of course, I'm kidding. Or maybe I'm not kidding.
But that brings me to this. North Carolina and Bill Belichick, they must part ways as soon as
possible, just rip the band-aid off. The experiment is not working. We'll talk plenty about it
here on today's show. Plus, throughout the show, we'll be giving our week seven game picks here on
Locked-on ACC, all that and more coming up here on this edition. And before we get to everything,
this episode is brought to you by Mazda. Like our players, we sweat every detail because when
you make every move count, pulling off the unexpected is only the beginning. Stay tuned later for
highlights in this week's moving the game forward.
Mazda move and be moved.
It's ironic, isn't it?
Bill Belichick hates the New York Jets with every bone and every fiber in his body.
And yet, his team right now looks a lot like the college version of the New York Jets.
Endless drama off the field.
And of course, the on-field product is not very good either.
right. I mean, they have been pretty terrible this season.
The North Carolina Tarials, you can easily make an argument.
They're the worst team right now in the ACC.
But hey, despite every source out there right now that is suggesting that North Carolina
and Bill Belichick could be headed to an early divorce, Bill Belichick and North Carolina
would like you to know that they are so far sticking together as they put it up on screen
right now.
an official statement from Carolina Athletics from Bill Belichick and the director of athletics at North Carolina, Bubba Cunningham.
We'll start with Bill Belichick.
I'm fully committed to UNC football and the program we're building here.
Wow, great start, coach.
Let's hear from Bubba.
Coach Belichick has the full support of the Department of Athletics and University.
Wow, what a streaming endorsement right there by Bill Belichick and North Carolina.
right. They are definitely not headed for a divorce. But honestly, for every party involved,
I think it is best for North Carolina and Bill Belichick as soon as possible to just rip the
band-aid off, admit defeat, admit failure. This experiment is not working and it will not get better
with time. We say that a lot with coaches, how hey, you can't just give them one year, right? You got to
give them time to build the program. We'll go over it throughout this segment of how that is not
the case right now with North Carolina and Bill Belichick.
From the beginning, I think we all kind of understood that this was going to be a boom
or bust higher for everyone.
There was a world out there where I could see how Bill Belichick could turn North
Carolina around and make them one of the better teams in college football because
Bill Belichick is a Hall of Fame head coach.
He's going to the Hall of Fame, whether we like him, whether we don't like him.
He's definitely going to go down as one of the greatest head coaches in the history of football.
You want to say that's mostly because of Tom Brady?
That's fine.
But you know what?
He was the head coach of Tom Brady for all those years.
So he's going to the Hall of Fame.
So with that, you could see, hey, I know it's college and I know it's NFL,
but it could work at North Carolina.
Let's see.
But there was also plenty of error possibilities here.
Belichick is 73 years old.
He had been working in the NFL since 1975, meaning he wasn't working in college.
He was working in the National Football League, which we all know are two different sports.
Honestly, yeah, they play football, but that's about it.
Even the football rules are completely different from college and the NFL.
Of course, he was in the NFL up until 2023 when the New England Patriots decided to let him go.
And he signed a five-year deal with North Carolina in December, a five-year deal for a 73-year-old head coach that had been in the NFL since 1975.
Yeah, it could go wrong.
And so far, the team is just a complete disaster.
And we could start with the on-field product of North Carolina.
They're currently sitting at two and three, which isn't the worst.
record in the world. But when you dive a little bit deeper into the numbers, you come to find out
that North Carolina is arguably one of the worst power conference teams right now in college football,
because all three of their losses have come against power conference competition. And they have
been outstored in those games, 120 to 33. That is an average margin of defeat by 29 points.
but it gets worse because you can correct over time the on-field product.
But it's the off-the-field drama with North Carolina,
which makes this situation just so bad for everyone really involved.
In fact, I really feel for all those players and I feel for those parents
and some of the other coaches as well that are on the staff.
They didn't sign up for this circus or maybe they did.
but regardless, I don't think anyone thought it was really going to be as bad as it is to the point where Jackson Holes are unlocked on Syracuse or if locked on ACC, excuse me, is saying that both parties needed divorce ASAP.
I mean, we could sit here and go through it right now.
There's been a cancellation of the Hulu documentary with North Carolina.
UNC was not allowed to celebrate the success of their alum and the quarterback of the New England Patriots right now in Drake May,
who is doing a terrific job in his second year right now in the national football league.
You can't even celebrate him on Twitter.
Talk about Bill Belichick, right?
I mean, Jordan Hudson being on the sidelines, let's not even go there.
Endless amounts of violations within the program.
Seriously, ladies and gentlemen, I think we could do an entire podcast.
just breaking down all of the violations within the program.
It's honestly insane.
And it's just so fascinating to me because when you think about Bill Belichick
or when you thought about Bill Belichick prior to North Carolina,
regardless of how you felt of him as a coach,
his teams were always buttoned up.
They were always disciplined.
Nothing really got out to the public from his.
teams. Nothing. It was incredibly difficult to cover the New England Patriots when Bill Belichick
was there to try to get any sort of story out of them because they did a great job of being
tight-lipped. Now it is the complete opposite where everything seems to get leaked out of the North
Carolina program. It's already been reported now out there by Ali Connolly, I believe, of Guardian
U.S. that Belichick in North Carolina are already sort of discussing a buyout, which prompted the
response from Bubba Cunningham and Bill Belichick that they're fully committed to the program,
right? Fully committed to the program. But it's best for both parties to admit that this simply
just has not worked. And I think both parties will be much better off. We could talk about
Bill Belichick for a moment here.
Bill Belichick, maybe he gets a job in the NFL again.
And if not, he could simply retire.
He does not have to work again a day in his life.
He could go into the media if he so chooses.
Hey, locked on ACC.
We'll certainly take you.
I think it would be really cool to have Bill Belichick on this podcast, right?
So that's Belichick.
And then there's the North Carolina Tar Heels who are a power conference program.
They could recover from this.
It wasn't that long ago where North Carolina had a stretch of four consecutive years from 2020 to 2023, where at every point during those years, they were a ranked football team.
Of course, that was with Mack Brown.
They got plenty of resources at North Carolina.
This is not a program that I believe is strapped for cash, that they're just one of the poorer teams in all of the nation.
That is not true with North Carolina.
I know that they're more of a basketball school, but they could become a pretty.
good football program. We know this. They just were a pretty good football program.
So it makes sense for all parties involved. I don't think anyone would hold it against the other
if Belichick and North Carolina just have a moment and say, you know what, this simply isn't
working out. It's best for Belichick. It's best for North Carolina. And it's best for the ACC.
But what do you think? Do you think that Bill Belichick can actually
turn this around, prove myself and many others wrong about him and this program, comment your thoughts
in the comment section below. Now coming up, we'll discuss game picks for week seven of the ACC
football slate. So stick with me here on Locked on ACC. It's almost the weekend. Time to look back and
crown this week's MVP on who delivered powered by DoorDash, just so you can win every Saturday with
Doorsh streaks, saving more every time you order these players delivered when it mattered most.
And let's break it all down for the Pitt Panthers. That's right. We're going with the Pitt Panthers here.
Let's talk about how Mason Heinzschild delivered in a big way. First career start, true freshman,
and he had over 300 yards and four touchdowns leading Pitt to a win over Boston College. And just like Mason
Heinzschild delivered for the Pitt Panthers, DoorDash delivers your Saturdays.
with DoorDash streaks, you save every Saturday.
You order stack it up all season and you could save up to $250,
including $100 in DoorDash credits.
Order this Saturday, keep the streak alive.
Fuel your game day only with DoorDash.
Terms apply promo period through November 18.
The NFL season is here and Fando has an offer that you definitely don't want to miss.
Right now, new customers can bet just $5 and get $300 in bonus bets if you win.
That's right, pick a bet, put down five bucks.
And if it hits, you'll unlock $300 in bonus bets to use across.
the app, whether you're a casual fan or love diving into the stats,
Fandu makes the game day experience so much better. And hey, because of this offer,
it's honestly, it could be free money because you put down $5 on the Denver Broncos money
line against the New York Jets, assuming that Denver wins and they most likely will beat
the New York Jets over in Europe this weekend, you'll get $300 in bonus bets that you can
use to bet against the New York Jets continuously throughout the season. I mean, think about
that for just a moment, right? Keep betting against the New York Jets. That's a good strategy.

Locked on ACC. I'm Jackson Hulzer. Let's get into week seven game picks. And let's talk about,
in my opinion, the most fascinating game on the ACC slate this week. It's at noon
Eastern on Saturday.
You got number 25 Florida State hosting the Pitt Panthers.
Florida State is coming off back to back losses.
The first one was to Virginia, which at the time was seen as a pretty big upset.
But in hindsight, you know, it might not be such a big upset anymore, given how Virginia
has looked now in the ACC, of course.
And the Pitt Panthers got a 487.
dominant victory over Boston College.
But it's not just about, hey, Pitt was really good and Boston College is not a really
good team.
And let's be honest, Boston College is not good at all, to put it nicely.
Pitt made a quarterback change headed into that one.
They started a true freshman by the name of Mason Heinzschel.
And he was incredible in his first career start, absolutely, nearly perfect.
I was about to say absolutely perfect.
He was nearly perfect.
It's very hard to be perfect in football, especially, right?
30 of 41, over 320 yards, four touchdowns.
And somehow, Florida State, if you check the Fandul odds right now
or I actually am checking them late afternoon here on Thursday,
I want to get this up for you early Friday morning.
That's why I record on Thursdays, ladies and gentlemen,
but regardless, Florida State, 10 and a half point favorite.
I get there's home field advantage.
I understand that.
But that seems pretty disrespectful to pit.
And when I look at this game, I don't know if there's an outcome that would surprise me.
If you tell me that Mason Hinsho and his second career start is going to light up the Florida State defense,
I would not be surprised.
He was dominant last week.
But if you give him the exact reverse and say that Florida State is going to take advantage of the kid's lack of experience,
and they're going to blow out Pitt,
hey, I would not be surprised by that either.
It's one of those days where I could see going either way
and any outcome is possible.
Feel free to chime in right now in the comments section below
who you got Florida State or the Pitt Panthers in this one.
Do you believe Pitt is good?
Do you believe Florida State is good?
I don't know.
That's what we're going to find out on Saturday.
What I will say, though, is that,
Florida State, they want to be able to run the football.
The Pitt Panthers are not exactly a good matchup for them.
Pitt has by far in a way the best run defense in the ACC.
It's not even close.
Think about how great Miami is at stopping the run.
They're second in the ACC.
They're dominant too.
But Pitt has them beat by 20 yards per game on average.
And last time I checked,
I believe pit lets up less than two yards a carry.
So Florida State against that difficult pit defense,
it's not a great matchup.
But perhaps, here's the flip side.
Florida State, they lose to Virginia,
they come out against Miami,
they were not very good until the fourth quarter.
Maybe they found something in that fourth quarter
that can carry over
into this matchup against Pitt.
And overall, I'm going to make a prediction,
just like I am for every single game here on the ACC Slate.
I'm going to go with Florida State in this one.
I don't think they'll cover.
I do think it'll be a tight game.
I will go with Florida State at home to get the victory 2720.
Agree with me?
Disagree with me?
Think I'm an idiot.
Hey, maybe I am an idiot.
Comment your thoughts in the comments section below.
Let's move on to another game here that I think is pretty fascinating.
and you might not think it's that fascinating, but you know what?
I do.
Boston College hosting the Clemson Tigers.
It's at 7.30 p.m. Eastern prime time.
Here's the deal.
Clemson should, key word is should, dominate Boston College.
Boston College is just in a complete free fall right now.
Their season has gone completely haywire.
They've had a couple of close games,
but last week it was like the perfect storm of,
everything that could possibly go wrong with a football team when they lost 487 to pit.
But I am not so sure that this is going to be the bloodbath that many of you are probably expecting.
Because I don't know if Clemson is very good either.
What happened to Clemson last week?
What did they do?
Well, they played North Carolina.
All right, you played North Carolina.
And they got a win.
Good for them.
Although at this point, North Carolina for most ACC teams that are.
or at least competent is a free win at this point.
But hey, Jackson, the Clemson Tigers came out and they throttled North Carolina.
At the end of the first quarter, they were leading 28 to 3.
It was an awesome performance by Clemson.
They showed why they were one of the best teams in the country on paper heading into the season
and why many people, including myself, thought they had a legitimate chance to compete for a national championship.
So what happened after the first quarter?
Oh, you were expecting me to say something.
I apologize.
Clemson Tigers did basically nothing for the remainder of the game.
I mean, they go up 283 and that was about it.
Yeah, they scored another touchdown.
They got a field goal.
But they did not do much outside of that first quarter.
You want to say that they took their foot off the gas.
Sure, but they had Kate Klubnick in the game in the third quarter.
They had some of their starters in the game even in the fourth quarter.
Go check the game logs.
It's there.
They were in there.
And yet Clemson could not really do much.
I think it would be hilarious if Boston College actually got a home victory here and they beat Clemson.
And they might have a shot to do it.
But in good conscience, there is no way I can pick Boston College to beat him.
I just can't.
I do think this could be closer than the store I'm about to say.
It's one of those games where I'm going to pick Clemson to win 31 to 10,
but I think it could be in the fourth quarter and it's a 1710 game,
but Clemson just pulls away late.
Comment your thoughts in the comments section below.
Who do you got winning?
Clemson or Boston College?
Feel free to agree or disagree with me.
Call me an idiot right now in the comment section below.
Now coming out, we got plenty of more.
matchups to talk about here in week seven of the ACC. So stick with me here on locked on
ACC. This episode is brought to you by Mazda's moving the game forward. For those who believe
it's not just about playing the game, it's about redefining it. There are moments that do more
than put points on the board. They move crowds, move culture, and keep the game moving forward.
And I don't know necessarily about a specific moment, but how about again for the pit panthers,
there's Mason Hintzio making his first career start.
I mean, talk about a moment.
First career start, true freshman.
He delivered in a huge way over 300 yards and four touchdowns.
And when you follow what moves you, the unexpected is only the beginning.
Just like there's more to every highlight, there's more to a Mazda vehicle.
Mazda move and be moved.
Is there a world in which NC State actually stays in the game and they keep it close against Notre Dame?
Dare I say, does NC State have a chance to upset Notre Dame?
Let's dive right into it.
First off, Notre Dame is hosting the Wolfpack Saturday at 3.30 p.m. Eastern.
The Wolfpack are pretty significant underdogs.
Last time I checked over on Fandul, NC State was a 22.5 point underdog to upset Notre Dame.
So do they have a chance?
The answer is yes, but in only one way.
They have to get themselves in a shootout against Notre Dame,
which is a lot easier said than done.
Basically what I'm saying is their quarterback over there at NC State and C.J. Bailey
and they're running back in Hollywood Smothers,
they got to go berserk for this team to have a chance against Notre Dame.
because you can't rely on the NC state defense against one of the top offenses in the country right now.
The Wolfpack defense currently in the ACC, they are 13th in yards allowed and they are 11th in points allowed.
They're also not particularly good at stopping the run.
Good luck when you're going up against a team like Notre Dame.
And their past defense isn't much better either.
and Notre Dame actually has a pretty solid passing attack as well.
Notre Dame's offense, they average over 40 points per game.
That is top 15 in the nation.
So you have to assume Wolfpack fans out there that they're going to give up a ton of points.
You have to book in right now 35 minimum.
That's the bare minimum that I think that Notre Dame gets to,
unless it is such a blowout and maybe the Wolfpack defense stiffens at times and maybe they hold them down to 28 to 30.
But honestly, I would book in Notre Dame right now to score at least 35 points against NC State.
But their hope is that CJ Bailey, Hollywood smothers, they go insane and you can outstore Notre Dame.
You get into a shootout with them.
Notre Dame's defense, particularly in the first few weeks of the season, was not particularly good,
although they've gotten significantly better over the last couple of weeks,
well, perhaps their bad defense shows up in this game from the first few weeks.
And if you're NC State, you take advantage of that.
And you could maybe win this game, let's say, 3835.
But honestly, that's their only path.
I can't see NC State winning a game, let's say, 2117 or 20 to 17,
something along those lines, right?
So I'm going with Notre Dame.
I'm going with Notre Dame pretty comfortably.
I don't know if they'll cover.
In fact, actually, my prediction,
I have NC State slightly covering the spread.
I will go with Notre Dame in this one,
4524.
Comment your thoughts in the comment section below.
Let's talk about another matchup here.
Number 13, Georgia Tech hosting Virginia Tech at 3.30 p.m. Eastern.
Look, I'm not a big release,
a big believer, excuse me, in Georgia Tech.
I'm just not.
Why am I not a big believer in Georgia Tech?
They're a team that has shown they can pretty much handle anyone in the country.
They could play with the big boys.
They've proven that over the last couple of years.
They can go up against anyone, toe to toe, and they can beat them up front.
So that's a credit to Georgia Tech.
But they also play down to their competition.
I mean, they should have lost that game against Wake Forest.
Credit to them for pulling it out in overtime.
And Wake Forest simply couldn't get their act together despite a really bad call.
But they were in overtime against Wake Forest.
I get it was a rogue game.
But I mean, come on, Georgia Tech.
You're supposed to be better than that.
That being said, they're going up against Virginia Tech.
Virginia Tech is an awful team.
They've already fired their coach.
Georgia Tech is absolutely.
home. The one thing that I do want to keep an eye on, though, because this is the lone path
where things could kind of get finicky here for Georgia Tech in this game, because on the surface,
you wouldn't think that Virginia Tech has much of a chance. Georgia Tech is the worst rush defense
in the ACC right now. That's right. They are even worse than my beloved Syracuse Orange.
I always criticize on Locked on Syracuse, Syracuse's run defense. They're terrible. Georgia
Tech is somehow worse in terms of yards allowed per game on the ground.
They are worse than Syracuse.
They are worst in the ACC right now.
Virginia Tech is actually pretty good at running the football, upper half in the ACC.
So I think it is imperative that Georgia Tech gets off to a fast start because Virginia Tech's
passing game is simply put not good at all.
so if they're trailing and they have to be forced to throw the football,
Georgia Tech's going to win this game in a blowout.
But if Virginia Tech maybe can make a few stops early, get a few stores early,
all of a sudden things can get pretty dicey for Georgia Tech and that suspect run defense.
What do you think?
Is there any shot of an upset here?
Comment your thoughts in the comments section below.
I am going to pick Georgia Tech in this one.
I actually forgot to write a store in my notes here.
so I'll just give you a prediction right now off the top of my head.
I will go with Georgia Tech to win, let's say, 31, 14.
How about that?
3114 Georgia Tech over Virginia Tech.
Final two matchups to talk about, you got SMU at home hosting Stanford at noon
Eastern.
Unless SMU just forgets to show up, this should be a cakewalk victory for SMU.
but I'm not super impressed by them.
I'm really not there.
Last game was against, again, my beloved Syracuse Orange,
and yes, they did beat them pretty good.
But let's talk about the second half,
because I don't know what happened to SMU in the second half.
They almost, they tried to let Syracuse back in that game.
The SMU offense was stalling out.
Kevin Jennings had a fourth quarter interception.
They had a safety that they allowed as well.
It was not a good half of football.
for the SMU offense.
So that's concerning because Syracuse's defense is not very good.
And then I can't really judge the SMU defense because the quarterback of Syracuse is not
Steve Angelly.
It's Ricky Collins.
And spoiler alert, Ricky Collins is not even close to as good as what Steve
Angeli was doing for Syracuse prior to his torn Achilles.
Stanford is not a very good team either.
So yeah, SMU should win this game,
but I'm not going to be able to get a read on SMU following this one.
If they dominate, sure, congratulations.
That's cool.
But to me, there is really no upside here with SMU.
There is only a downside here with SMU in this game.
So they just got to take care of business.
It doesn't matter if they win by one point.
It doesn't matter if they win by 20 points.
It's really not going to change my opinion on them.
I do think they will get the victory.
I'm going to go with 35.
So SMU in a blowout fashion over Stanford.
And finally, a winless team going up against Wake Forest.
That's right.
Oregon State hosting Wake Forest.
They are 0 and 6 this season.
They've gotten close the past couple of games to finally getting their first win of the year.
But for the most part, Oregon State, oh and six.
Yeah, they're as bad as their record indicates.
But Wake Forest isn't particularly good either.
I wouldn't consider Wake Forest one of the class teams of the ACC right now.
I guess they nearly pulled off an upset against Georgia Tech, but they didn't.
Yeah, that's another reason why I just, I don't believe in Georgia Tech all that much.
It doesn't make sense how they were even in that game against Wake Forest.
But Fandall right now is Wake Forest as a slight favorite to get the victory on the road against Oregon State.
It seems like a prime opportunity for Oregon State to get their first win.
of the year. They're at home. They're going up against the team that's not particularly good.
But that being said, there's no way on this podcast. I'm going to pick a team that has not won a
game yet this season. And of course, I'm an ACC Homer a little bit. So I'm going to go with
Wake Forest. I do think it'll be a tight game, even though these are two teams that are not particularly
good. I do think it could be a pretty fun game to watch. I do think this could be a pretty
entertaining game. So I'll go with Wake Forest, 3128. What are your predictions for week seven of
ACC football? Comment your thoughts in the comment section below. And thank you for making
