We will continue to wrap up all of our takeaways from week two in the ACC.
Focus in on the teams who played by games against a bunch of FCS opponents,
but there are still things takeaway from those games.
But the big story in the ACC on Monday is that Florida State has moved on
from their athletic director Michael Alford after he came in to run the Seminole Booster Club
was elevated to AD.
And of course, we know things have not gone well with the football program.
And there was a statement put out there by Florida State Board of Trustees Chairman
Peter Collins saying changes like this are never easy, but sometimes necessary.
We have made significant investments in structural changes in our athletics program and
some boosters over the past few years, but more are needed.
This step begins the next phase of restructuring the university, that university,
must commit to in order to compete in the new era of college athletics.
The president and the board are in lockstep on the mission and what the results must be.
Your takeaway from Michael Alford, no longer being the AD there at Florida State.
Them saxophone's getting loud, ain't it?
Them saxophones getting mighty loud if you are Mike Norville.
Boy, this is, you know, this is the old saying from the last of the Nolan Batman movies.
they're expecting one of us in the records, brother.
This is what this is.
Okay, somebody was expected in the records
because Norville wasn't going down by itself
with as much money that was invested into him.
And it's not even, the unfortunate part,
I don't think outside of this situation,
their AD has been bad.
But let me take it a step further.
I don't think that giving Norville that big extension
when he got it was a bad idea at the time.
I don't think it was.
I don't think it was.
When you look at what was going on, speculation swirling that Sabin was going to retire.
You just came off a 13 and 0 year.
You were looking at a situation where ACC champs undefeated, looks like we're back on track to be in Florida State football.
You were left with two options, right?
And the reality of this situation, based on what we have seen happen, this was a lose-lose for Alfred.
because let's imagine the alternate worlds,
shall we, Julie.
They let them walk.
They let them walk.
Saban retires.
He takes over at Bama,
and Bama continues to be Bama.
Or like they just,
they go through the Norville cycle that he had at Florida State,
where it's like a bad year or two,
and then he gets it going,
and then their national champ level.
Do you think Florida State fans would have been okay with that?
Do you think they would have been okay,
unless that new hire was,
crushing it out the gates.
Yeah.
So it wasn't a bad hire.
And hindsight is always 20-20.
If you knew your ex was going to cheat on, you wouldn't have talked to her that night in the bar.
But things happened the way they do.
Yeah, I don't think anyone's looking at the decision to extend Mike Norvell now and thinking
back at the time that they made the wrong choice.
Now, eventually, one of these AEDs is just going to have to say, go ahead, just go.
we're not going to give you this extension.
We're not going to give you this big buyout,
which, of course, is working in favor of Mike Norville and a lot of these coaches,
as he is still employed, even though he should have been fired after last season.
Hell, going two and ten is grounds for being terminated at a university like Florida State,
considering their tradition and the investment that's put into the program.
So look, man, Michael Alford is one of those guys who believes that the cap is real,
believes that with the new legislation that came out last year,
that teams are going to follow that.
And that is a big reason why Florida State made this decision,
that he does not fit the modern era of college athletics,
and that he, of course, is connected to Mike Norvell,
not just the extension, but he is in lockstep,
as was said by the Board of Trustees chairman with Mike Norvel,
and they both apparently got wrong how much they thought it was going to cost
to build a roster after going 13-0 back in 2023.
and we have seen what it's cost Florida State over the last two seasons.
So Michael Offord needed to move on.
He was never even brought in to Florida State to be the AD.
He was brought in to be the chairman of the Seminole Booster Club,
which is invariably very tied to the university and fundraising
and how they go out spending money and running the athletic department,
but he had to move on.
And now I just wonder, when is it going to be Mike Norville's turn?
Because they're going to lose in Tuscaloosa this Saturday.
They're going to get embarrassed.
Are they just going to go ahead and move on Sunday?
Because I think they should.
you look at last year, Virginia Tech fired Brent Pry
after three games and they had an FCS opponent afterwards
and they went out and played an ACC game against NC State.
That's basically the same setup up here for FSU.
They go get embarrassed by Alabama.
They have an FCS opponent in central Arkansas.
Then have Virginia after that.
You don't need a buy week.
You have an FCFC.
Move on.
Alford's gone.
We know that's never going to work out Mike Norvelle.
And had he gone to Alabama, he probably would have failed there too
because he can't recruit.
And I understand that the portal is important,
If you can't recruit and develop out of high school, which he's yet to do at Florida State,
you can't have one of these jobs at any major program in college football nowadays.
He's better off than the G5.
If you can ever even rehab his image to get another head coaching opportunity in FBS football again.
But it's time to move on.
All for it's gone, Norville's got to go.
I'm tired of watching it.
Let's all be done with this on Sunday morning at the latest.
For the sake of the conference, you're absolutely right.
For the sake of the conference, I'm with you when you're right,
and you are not wrong here, brother.
The reality is you needed,
this was a firing that should have already happened.
And you know what?
I absolutely agree in terms of Alfred's sin wasn't the extension.
It was being too loyal to the soil.
At some point in time,
yeah, this is my guy.
Yeah, I'm rocked with him.
You got to let him go.
Well, the buyout's going to be massive.
Do you not?
I've said this multiple times on this show.
And I hope that I am wrong.
the damage of keeping Norville will last you for half a decade, maybe more.
And I think that that's what we're in right now.
I disagree.
Today in college football, you can go,
if you get the right coach who actually knows how to recruit high school and develop players,
they get, and like the big issue from everything my understanding is,
is just his inability to get the boosters,
not just Norville, but also Alford's inability to get the boosters on board
to go above the spending.
There's no real cap in college football, but go above Rebshare.
He wouldn't do that.
He doesn't understand the landscape.
So it has nothing to do with loyalty.
It has everything to do with he doesn't know what the hell he's doing.
And he and Norville are why Florida State football is in this position.
So they can hire somebody else tomorrow.
They can go actually get high school players, go out and get players in a portal,
coach them up and be right back to next year looking like FSU.
There's no such thing as, oh, they're set up by five to 10 years.
That's not the case anymore.
You have to wait three, four recruiting classes.
Look at Oklahoma State this past weekend.
They have been asked the last two years,
and they just beat the hell out of Oregon.
They didn't need.
They weren't set back by my Gondy.
What did Oklahoma State do in week one?
They lost and they bounced back,
but they're not set back by five years because Gundy was bad the last two years.
Like I think that's not, that's not reality.
That's also a very different situation.
You're talking about a coach in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
You are not talking about a coach in a hotbed of recruiting in central Florida in
Dallas.
But how are they set back by five?
years, how they've been set back?
Because here's how they're set back. Because when they get, so it's not just about
where you are, it's where your competition is relative to you. So it's not just that they got
set back because he was bad. Every time one team gets bad, somebody else gets good. This is not a
zero-sum game where it's like, oh, a bunch of teams can be bad all at once. Somebody moves
into that void of power. What happened to the void of power in the state of Florida while Florida
State was getting bad. Their biggest rival became the guys on the block.
And so Florida State can never catch up because they had like North Carolina.
I'm not saying never. It's going to take a decade to catch up. I'm saying I believe that it will
very likely take them half a decade, if not more, to catch up. Because again, your biggest rival
right down the street is saying we are proven winners now. We have gone this way up into the
right every time. Where has the team that you're looking at going here?
They're stinking. They need to replace their AD.
They've got to replace their head coach.
Who do you think is easier to recruit a player to?
That's what I'm saying.
I'm not saying that it's irrevocable.
I'm not saying the right coach, get the right AD, get your finances together.
It does not take that long.
It will not take that long.
In theory, it doesn't because everybody keeps looking at Indiana saying, oh, look at what Sig did, look at what Sig did.
Look at what Sig did.
But in reality, look at the greater picture than,
just them. Everybody else has taken a minute to get that thing going in the way that they should.
I'm not talking about a one-off game here and there. I'm saying to be where your program believes it
should be. If you're going to tell me, I believe the Oklahoma State will be back to the height of where
Mike Gundy took him next year or this year, I'll bet you a million dollars it don't happen. I'll bet you
a million dollars that don't happen. I'm not saying that this is a situation where Florida
state is irredeemable, but I'm saying that their biggest rival has moved into their
void of power is going to take a minute to come back from that.
That's what I'm saying.
Sure. Not that they can't ever come back here.
Yeah. I mean, I totally disagree in today's landscape that it takes that long to bounce back.
There's plenty of examples, not just Indiana or you can turn things around.
But like, sure, we'll see what plays out.
A Florida State need to make this decision.
And they finally made it.
Go fire Norville.
And let's move on and get FSU football to being FSU football again.
And Lord knows it should not take five plus years.
You tell me what P4 teams did it besides Indiana.
What P4 teams in a year or two just went from being two and ten,
trash had to fire my coach to just in a year.
Oh, we back now.
All right.
Well, we'll have to wait see how Oklahoma State goes.
They already have gone from being pretty bad the last two years to turn around,
winning a game.
We've seen Texas Tech be pretty mid-programmed to going to playoff last year.
Texas Tech has been a perennial power in the Big 12.
They've never been a perennial power.
What?
I encourage you to look at Texas Tech football reference and go see all the 10-win seasons that they do not have.
They've never been a perennial power in the Big 12.
And the fact that Texas and Oklahoma and hell, Nebraska, A&M are no longer the Big 12 is why Texas Tech is even in the position.
Like perennial power, they haven't had a 10-1 season until since 2008 with Mike Leach and with Graham Horell, Michael Crabtree.
And before that, they didn't have a 10-1 season in the Southwest Conference.
They've not been a perennial power.
Brother, okay.
Perennial power may have been an exaggeration,
but Cliff Kingsbury was their worst coach by a mile,
by a mile.
He was the aberration in terms of his winning percentage
against every other Texas coach.
And that's something you could look up that that is a thousand percent true.
There is not a single Texas that coach in the past,
what, 20 years or so that's had as bad of a winning percentage as them.
Okay.
Whatever, it doesn't matter.
I disagree.
I don't think it should take too long,
but FSU's made a decision.
and let's look back at the weekend in ACC football.
NC State got back on track.
Lincoln Keynes, his development continues there at Louisville.
We'll talk about all that here in just a moment on locked on ACC.

All right, back here on Locked on ACC,
let's take a look at the rest of the ACC
slate from week two.
looking at the opponents or teams that played a bunch of
FCS opponents. Let's start off in Raleigh
on Friday night beating Richmond
by 73 to zero.
What was your takeaway from the pack
on Friday night and what was, of course,
a beatdown in a game that was never in doubt
for state? I mean, when you look at a game like this,
this was supposed to be their bounce back or get right game
after being physically mauled and dominated.
You got to take that out on the lesser opponent.
You got to, you know, you got to do all those things.
And that's what they did, right?
Set a bunch of rushing records and did what
they needed to do in terms of just completely and utterly dominating Richmond.
At the end of the day, yes, they're an FCS team, but that was a ranked FCS team.
That was an FCS team that you expected to put up some fight, some type of resistance,
and to completely roll over them in a way that they did.
Good job there.
Not going to say that, you know, oh, we're back.
This is 10-win season.
Back on everybody.
Not going to say that.
I think that more of a test of that is going to come on the road at Nashville this weekend.
But, you know, this is.
is definitely a step in the right direction.
Yeah, Duke Scott had three carries for 111 yards,
and it touched on his first two drives.
So good to see him get involved in this game
and for state to just go out there and take care of business,
even though it was an FCC opponent,
certainly dominating them and be able to get back
as a big game, 1245 PM Eastern Time,
SEC Network against Vanderbilt there in Nashville.
Louisville also on Friday night, 59,
Villanova 13.
We can't quite a rough start on the opening drive
I missed a couple of passes, especially targeting Jalilalil's Skinner, but then I was able to connect with him.
More mistakes for Louisville, coverage bus running into the kicker on sportsmanlike.
Things that we've seen from Jeff, or, yeah, Jeff Brum.
Yeah, Jeff Brom's teams over the last couple of years.
I want to say Brian Brom, he's on staff too.
But so I guess he can be part of the problem coaching-wise get these guys to be more disciplined.
But things we've seen from them cannot continue on Saturday one day, host SMU.
Any takeaways you have from Louisville, Villanova from Friday?
I'm starting to think that that's not a glitch.
It's a feature of the Brom error.
Like, don't get me wrong.
They did what they were supposed to do.
Obviously, Cleve Lubin and company dominated up front, all that good stuff.
But it's starting to become a feature of Brom teams that you're going to get those boneheaded penalties in absolutely crushing moments.
They have to get that cleaned up.
They have to get it cleaned up because I like Louisville a lot, man.
I love the city.
I love that team.
I hope that they do well for the sake of the conference.
boy, you can't do that if in these moments you're either going to be playing like way above your heads or the regular you is going to give, you know, first downs and free points to ACC teams.
They're a very good ACC team.
I don't think they're good enough to allow that against, you know, more staunch competition.
But again, another dominant win here.
Yeah, we even saw against Ole Miss, a few of the mistakes that they made hurt them in that game.
I think that would happen in game of SMU.
now SMU is also a team that is prone to make a few mistakes.
So we'll see who makes the fewest mistakes may win that game.
And I'll say too, Isaac Brown has not really gotten going so far this season.
29 carries, 97 yards, only 3.3 yards for carry.
Kiwan Brown is actually injured in this game.
So that will be an injury and injury to monitor throughout the week.
We'll have an ACC available report because Louisville does play.
And I see ACC opponent, if I can talk today, which I can't at SMU.
Virginia, Norfolk,
State, Virginia winning 59 to 3 against Mike Vicks outfit.
Cam Robinson was back making his season debut after suffering an ACL tear last year.
Corey Costner, the safety, who did not start in that game, did not playoff.
So in that game against NC State back in Week 0, he was out there.
Wide receivers, Rico Flores and Dylan Newton Short still missing.
The hope is that they'll have Flores out there on Saturday night against West Virginia here in my hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Looking at the game against state, it was 18 of the first 19 plays.
We're all rushing attempts.
game, it was five of seven that were all passing attempts.
Bo Perbuella, first three drives, eight for eight, 120 yards, three touchdowns.
He had a day.
And it was very clear that they were looking to throw the ball and come a lie with that
passing attack after being able to dominate up front against state a couple of weeks ago.
You still cannot sell me on this team's passing game, but they bludgeon people in the running
game, point blank period.
There's no way around it.
There is only one way to beat them and that's to go through them.
That's it.
that's it. I mean, you're not going to convince me their passing game is high level
because you threw the ball around the yard against Norfolk State. But again, but again,
they are so physical. I think that they can end up eight, nine. I don't know about 10,
but I think they'll end up with an eight, nine win season just by bludgeoning people and just by playing
great defense. Yeah, and it's an interesting matchup against the West Virginia who has,
what is his name, Michael, whatever. He came from Oklahoma. Can't throw the ball, but good runner.
And then they brought over a running back who was at Jacksonville State prior with Rich Rod came over this year.
He's looked good so far.
So that will test how good they are up front against what is going to be a team that certainly wants to run the ball,
which is what Rich Rod's been doing since his first at West Virginia.
I tried to do a little bit at Michigan didn't really work out.
And now he's doing back there as he's home in West Virginia.
So there's three games from Friday night.
There's two contests that happened on Saturday.
We'll talk about those here in just a moment on Lockdown ACC.
Larenko is known for its enamel supporting gum,
but now they're launching of nicotine-free pouch.
Lerenco pouches are designed to provide a clean focus
while supporting enamel at the same time.
Each pouch contains 50 milligrams of caffeine plus L-theneen and alpha-GPC
for smooth, steady focus without an energy crash.
Lorenco pouches are pouches that swap out to nicotine
and give you clean focus and support your enamel the whole time they're in.
They come in mint, cinnamon, and mango,
making it easy to find a flavor that fits into any daily routine.
Lorenco sent me the new pouches,
and I'm a fan. What's it out to me was how smooth the energy felt.
I also like that it's doing something good for my teeth while it's sitting in there.
That combination makes it something I actually enjoy using throughout the day.
Give Loren a try.
Right now, Lorenco is offering our listeners up to 50% off at bylorin.com slash lockdown
college.
That's by Lauren, B-U-Y-L-A-R-I-N-E dot com, so that's locked-on college for up to 50% off.
All right, one final segment here on Lockdown ACC.
Looking at the two other contests from Saturday, we have not gone over.
North Carolina winning 35 to 3 against East Tennessee State.
SMU 56 to 10 against UC Davis.
Kevin Jennings did break the school record for total yardage there at SMU that was set by Ben Hicks.
Had been around for a decade.
He now has 9,073 yards total, and he's on pace to break Hicks' passing record, which
would occur in week four.
So maybe not this weekend, but if he does it this weekend, SMU probably won.
wins that game against Louisville, but certainly the weekend afterwards.
He should set that record.
He's been great so far, 767 yards passing, eight touchdowns, did have the bad pick against
FSU, the other one not on him.
But Kevin Jennings and Mustangs looking pretty good heading into Louisville this weekend.
That's what you needed to see.
You needed to see a sharp, clean game.
I call FCS games to It's About Us game because there are some games where like legitimately
your opponent and who they are to some extent it makes.
matters because there's NFL guys over there.
And what that NFL guy does can make a difference in the game.
When you're playing a lot of these FCS teams, it's just about you and how you come into this game.
And it's very clear.
SMU prepared for this game in a way that's like, I need to see this game be clean.
I need to see us dominate first nap to the last, starters, backups, young guys, everybody gets it.
We're making it clear.
We're making it easy.
We don't want to make this complicated to do too much.
no, no, no, we are who we are, and we're going to show up and show out, which they did.
Yeah, and look, I think they're very clearly a team that's going to contend to get the show.
We all knew that the way that they played against FSU, I was hoping would be their worst game
with the four turnovers that should not have happened, but FSU is so bad.
It did not matter, even though that game was close in the score alone.
You look at the total yardage.
You just watch the game in itself, which, of course, we both did, and everybody else who watched it, knows.
Yeah, that was not a close game.
That was the closest game you've ever seen.
That was really a blowout just because of all the turnovers that they had against FSU.
And then finally, North Carolina 35 East Tennessee State 3, big one for Carolina at Clemson this weekend.
They have not won in Death Valley since 2001.
They have not been Clemson since 2010, which is kind of crazy that season.
That was when Bush Davis was last year in Chapel Hill and had all the issues that then led to the academic fraud investigation.
They beat FSU Clemson.
even Miami, all that years, kind of crazy that Carolina, that season was able to do that.
So that's the last time maybe Clemson, period.
Great opportunity this weekend.
I was looking to see some other guys at quarterback.
We saw a little bit of Miles O'Neill, none of Travis Burgess, which I think is a little
disappointing.
But East Tennessee State did a good job of holding out of the football in this game to kind of keep Carolina off the field.
Still not running the ball all that well, even though DeMond June did have three rushing touchdowns.
That's all well and good, but need to see more out of him, Jalen McGill, and then Ben Hall,
who's continued to be there starting running back in this game,
despite a fumble that was pretty costly against TCU up in Ireland.
And Xavier Lewis,
Brit mentioned this yesterday,
big performance again, two sacks, two tackles for loss,
up to six and a half tackles for loss,
and now four sacks on the season.

Opportunities down to feel that Billy Edwards was
I will connect on.
We'll need to likely do that.
Maybe not against Clemson on Saturday.
Their offense, the Tigers offense, definitely going to be a big question.
And we'll talk about that game later on this week as we look at some of the bigger games in the ACC.
Also look at the rest of the slate heading into week three.
