Starting point is 00:00:00 A starting college football quarterback is in treatment for gambling and may never be allowed to play again. You are Locked on ACC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. He's Kenton Gibbs from Lockdown Wolfpack. I'm Alex Dono from Lockdown Canes. And on this episode of Lockdown ACC, a certain ACC program, actually they weren't the only ones to be fair. But the ones who refer to themselves as the 33rd NFL team had nobody drafted by any of the other 32 over the weekend. Miami needs a new athletic director.
Starting point is 00:00:46 Dan Radicovic, who's also a former Clemson AD, so there's a lot of ACC tie-ins on this. He is retiring, and it sounds like Miami wants a very sales-minded individual in this era of college sports to be the next AD. But Kenton Gibbs, let's talk gambling. All right. Now, there's certainly nothing in any contracts I have that prohibits me from wagering on sports, but I'm not a starting Division I, College Football quarterback. Brendan Sorsby of Texas Tech is. Now, this is, of course, a big 12 player, but there is an ACC tie-in because when he was in the transfer portal a few months ago, there were ACC schools interested, including the Miami Hurricanes, and boy, did Miami dodge a bullet. So before Sorsby, who's a former Cincinnati Bearcat and former Indiana Hoosier, before he ever takes a snap in a game for Texas Tech,
Starting point is 00:01:46 his Texas tech career and his college football career might be over revealed today. The NCAA is investigating Sorsby's gambling, according to sources, as the organization, forbids athletes from betting on both college and pro sports. Now, since this information started to come to light, you know, the old, the damage control playbook is, I must check myself into some kind of treatment. And that's what Soresby has done. Sorsby is in treatment for sports betting. And thousands of dollars allegedly spent by Sorsby to bet on games, including Kenton,
Starting point is 00:02:23 back when he was in Indiana Hoosier. Now, you know, for what it's worth, he didn't play that. That season, actually I think he played in one game. I don't think there's any proof he wagered on that one game. But when he redshirted in 2022 at Indiana, he allegedly bet on at least one Indiana game. So even though he didn't play in that game, betting on your own team, let alone your own sport at your own school is very, very much forbidden. Dono, open the schools back up. open them back up
Starting point is 00:02:58 and send Brendan and any other players that are doing this type of gambling send them back. Put them on the first bus that says whatever your local municipality is, school. And I know what you're thinking, Ken. Why would you put all these 18 to 23, 23, 24 year old grown men on buses back to school because he needs to go back and learn some basic arithmetic?
Starting point is 00:03:20 Quick question, Dono. How much is a starting quarterback going for in the portal? right now, one of the top five to 10 guys. Well, give me a ballpark. Four to 10 million. Four to 10 million. Okay. So let's just, let's not even do the NFL math yet.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Let's just do that math. How big were the bets that he likely placed? Let's not even get into the specific number detail because I haven't seen any specific numbers. But Donald, what are the chances that this young. man bet and made more than $2 million from these bets. Based on my own experience, pretty slim. Pretty slim.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Pretty slim. So now, you've thrown away the potential of $4 million for what? Beer money? For what? Gas money? Oh, let's be aggressive. Rent money for like half a school year? And mind you, you were on scholarship in Indiana.
Starting point is 00:04:30 So they took care of that. This is the type of stuff that it's infuriating to me. And this is how I know these young men do not have good counsel in their lives. Because we're not even talking about delayed gratification of all you pass up a large chunk of money now for an even larger chunk of money later. You are talking about doing something that, from, First of all, the house always wins when you're gambling. I don't care who you are, how good you think you are. Oh, I'm the greatest better there ever was.
Starting point is 00:05:03 Sure. Yeah. You ever notice how all those professional sports gamblers have discords and all that where they got a bunch of young men joining those discords and telling their bets? Why would anybody want to make competition for the thing that they do best in the world? Make tens of thousands of competitors. But what if those tens of thousands of competitors would give you $5? a piece a month. And now you start
Starting point is 00:05:30 doing something. You're mad. Right? Again, I joke about people being the generous for gambling all the time. But if you are a student athlete, if you have a student athlete in your life, if you don't take away anything I've ever selling this show, take away this. That ability to say no right now will get you
Starting point is 00:05:49 every win you want in life later. I got to miss out on the parties right now. I got to miss out on the drinking right now. I got to miss out on the drinking right now. to miss out on the gambler right now. Am I of legal age to go to parties? I have legal age to drink. Am I of legal age to gamble?
Starting point is 00:06:04 Yes. But these are the types of ramifications. And if you can hold out, the average in the field career is three years, you got 25 till the day you die. Make all the bets. Go bet. Go on those.
Starting point is 00:06:22 They got bedding sites now to let you bet whether or not it's going to rain in your area. Go make all of it. Go do it. Bet on the presidential election. Bet on the games. Bet on, you know, whether or not me and men, the style are you going to work out.
Starting point is 00:06:33 By the way, I'm sorry to Clay broke your heart. I'm here for you. But I've lost a lot of money betting on you two being a thing. Hey, hey, don't worry, Don't know. It's just a delay bet till one of us hits the dirt. That bet's not over. But this is what I'm talking about. All you got to do is hold out for a little bit.
Starting point is 00:06:52 And your dumb ass done got yourself to miss millions overwere what every player in the ACC coach doran used to have a thank you box where we would pull out news clippings from dumb stuff that players with other schools did and he said thank you such and such we won't do that thank you such and such we know that's illegal now thank i couldn't even imagine the world where i'm playing the most lucrative position there is and i'm getting added to the thank you box for gambling oh my god foolishness well i want to dive a little deeper when we come back into how much is known because, you know, to be fair to Sorsby, this is an ongoing investigation. But if he's found guilty of these allegations, what's going to happen next?
Starting point is 00:07:39 And also what it means for Texas Tech? Because, you know, really good football team, really easy conference. Like, they're one of the favorites or would have been one of the favorites to win a championship this year. If QB1 is out for gambling, that impacts that heavily. you want to keep it locked right here. We're only getting started on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC. Workplace chaos. All right. So we're talking about Brennan Sorsby, the presumed Texas Tech starting quarterback, who is currently, he's in treatment. And according to this ESPN story, Sorsby's decision to seek treatment according to sources, came in the wake of the discovery of him. am making thousands of online bets on a variety of sports via a gambling app, which jeopardizes his eligibility with Texas Tech. Now, I don't see it in the story anywhere, Kent, and any details
Starting point is 00:10:10 on the actual dollar amounts of those bets like you were asking, but you'd figure if he's making thousands of bets, it stands to reason that at least thousands of dollars are involved in those thousands of bets. And so when we talk about the eligibility, all right, so certain distinctions have been made, which obviously, you know, he would look a lot worse if he was accused of point shaving, which he's not. Like, they go out of their way to say he didn't bet ever on his team to lose, nor did he bet on any games that he actually played in. So that makes it a little bit better.
Starting point is 00:10:45 But betting on your team to win is still bad because, you know, theoretically, you know information the general public does not. It's like an insider trading scenario. and then I looked up the actual NCAA rules, Kenton, because obviously everyone knows you're not allowed to bet on football when you play NCAA football. Everyone knows that, but what does the NCAA actually do about it? So under current NCAA guidelines,
Starting point is 00:11:11 student athletes who wager on their own school or on their own games face severe consequences, including Kent at a possible permanent ban, athletes who bet on their own games or even other sports at their own games, or even other sports at their own school may face a permanent loss of collegiate eligibility. There are also tiered suspensions for general sports wagering, not involving their own school. Penalties are often based on the total dollar amount wangered. But in his case, he is accused of betting on his own school at the time, which is really bad. So like Kenton, the bottom line here is depending on how this NCAA investigation goes,
Starting point is 00:11:49 he may never be allowed to play college football again. And I would guess you're going to have a hard time getting on an NFL team with something like this on your resume. So this is really, really bad territory for Soresby to be in right now. I'm trying to understand and I'm trying to be kind here because this young man is going through a tough time right now. Yeah. But I genuinely don't understand because Donno,
Starting point is 00:12:20 gambling is the only addiction I'll never get. I'll never understand it. Every other addiction, I understand to some degree except gambling. You want to know why? Why? You know, I grew up on the west side of Detroit. Obviously, not a very affluent area. I saw addiction.
Starting point is 00:12:37 I saw people who were struggling for it. Now, it's no joke. It's no joke. I don't look at it like a moral failing or anything like that. I look at it like, hey, you have a sickness. You have illness. That needs treatment. Here's the thing I don't understand about gambling addicts.
Starting point is 00:12:50 If I am addicted to some type of drug or alcohol, I pay the provider of the alcohol, I pay the provider of the drug, I get the euphoric feeling that I was looking for, be it the upper, the downer, be it or whatever, I get what I was looking for. If I'm addicted to more nefarious activities that I can't even say on this show, for the most part, you pay the provider, you get the service, you get the feeling, whatever it is. gambling is the only one for me that especially in this context you're wagering as to whether or not your team's going to win and we're talking thousands of bets by the way this is because this story just dropped and i had not seen stories with many details on it but this is the first time i'm hearing thousands of bets so you're betting thousands of times on things and you don't know whether or not they're going to turn out in your favor and you're doing that thousands of times and you're doing that thousands of times and Watch this. This is how silly this particular gambling addiction is. You also bet that you would never get caught. You also bet that I'm going to stay clean forever out of this. And here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:14:02 There may be other players gambling that just got away with it. There may be. There probably is. Probably is. The probability of statistics says that the group of people who play college football, college sports in general are the most susceptible to get into online. betting and wager. I get it. I get it. However, you bet against the house and the house won.
Starting point is 00:14:24 Congratulations. You know, I get, and again, I, I've had people explain to me it's the rush of just having the bet and all that good stuff. I get it. It's that. It's so, so you, you get the rush when you have the bet. You get the rush when you win. And when you lose and the more times you lose, the more you want to dig out of that hole is what happens to the people. with the addiction. And that to me is something, again, I would never understand if I'm a Brandon Sorsby because brother, you won. You won. You got life changing money. Everybody says that Texas
Starting point is 00:15:01 A&M is backed by billionaire oil money and they got NIA. Texas Tech. And reportedly, according to the ESPN story, he was expected to make over $5 million for this year. Over $5 million. And now look at you. You threw away $5 million for even if every one of those bets was $100 and you won each and every one of them. You lost money in the end. Wow. Look at you. Look at yourself.
Starting point is 00:15:33 Again, this is a very, very simple in the grand scheme of things, student athletes, parents of student athletes, people who care about your university. Tell those players if you know they're doing it. batting and all that. You could miss out on millions. Because here's the thing. And we've talked about this on there and we've even talked about it off here. The salaries for these players are not going down. The NIL ain't going down anytime soon.
Starting point is 00:16:01 So y'all keep making more and more. And because there's no salary cap or anything like that, growth for this is exponential. The highest paid quarterback in the NFL this year is not making 100% more than the highest paid last year. The highest paid last year wasn't $40 million. And this year is $80 million. It don't work like that in NFL. In college, the highest pay last year was about four or five.
Starting point is 00:16:20 This year we're talking 10 and so on and so forth. The money keeps me exponential, and you gave that up for a couple better. Foolishness, man. Foolishness. And I hope this young man gets the help that he needs. And I very seriously hope that the people coming after him, look at this and put it in their thank you box, put it in their box up. I'm not giving up millions.
Starting point is 00:16:46 for a petty little, oh, I get the rest, I get to feel it. Come on, man. Come on. Yeah, and for our sake on this show, I'm so glad he transferred to Texas Tech and not to Miami or somewhere in the ACC. Because, ooh. It's not the type of story I'd want to cover from that point of view. And as much as people rag on the ACC, here's the interesting thing about it.
Starting point is 00:17:13 Texas Tech is probably still going to be favorite to win the Big Club, even when them out. They might be, yeah. Even with them out, the gap narrows between them and BYU in terms of the betting odds and whatnot. I highly doubt, especially because of how everything went down and they're going to have a full fall camp to go through with whoever is the next guy. Hey, you're going to be the guy all throughout far camp. And as much as we say nobody's going to be in the shadow portal, this would be a hell of a time to utilize it. This would be a hell of a time.
Starting point is 00:17:44 Hey, come on, Holstein. You're not starting over there, brother. Come on, man. I got some good start snaps with you. Better wide receivers than you would have over there. More money you could ever imagine spending. Now, is that true about the better wide receivers? Maybe, maybe not.
Starting point is 00:18:00 But you got starting reps and apparently you got $5 million about to be freed up. So, you know, it's a very interesting scenario. And it could have ripples in the ACC because as much as we say, oh somebody's got to be the first to utilize the shadow portal this would be a heck of a time to do it oh man well i hope they're not calling up c j bailey hey hey you watch your mouth you watch your mouth donno i'm a be in miami shortly you watch your mouth i have to come down there and see about you well speaking of miami uh kentan miami needs a new athletic director um dan radicovich who's been Miami's AD since 2022.
Starting point is 00:18:40 Actually came over from Clemson. He's retiring. That news broke on Friday. I thought overall, you know, Radikovic has done a nice job at Miami. Obviously under his watch, the football program has risen. You know, not to give him all the credit for that,
Starting point is 00:18:59 but from 2022 to 2026, that coincides with Miami's football program going from five and seven to 13 and three and playing in an national championship game. I thought the crown jewel for Radikovych was hiring Jay Lucas as the men's basketball coach after Jim Laranega stepped down. It looks like Lucas is a home run higher so far for the men's basketball program. So I really appreciate the work that Radikovic has done. I think that in seeking this change, now I know I said he's retiring, but reports are that like Miami was on board with going into different direction, like they were not happy. They were not unhappy about him
Starting point is 00:19:37 retiring because I think Radikovych kind of represents like the previous iteration of college sports, more old school when things were less transactional and more administrative. Because Kenton, based on the names that I'm seeing as candidates to be Miami's next AD, including the president of Rock Nation Sports Agency, Michael Yormark, who does have, he's the brother of Brett Yormark, by the way, the twin brother of the Big 12 commissioner. So you know the kind of showmanship you would be getting if he ends up being Miami's AD. He was up until about 12 years ago the president of the Florida Panthers organization and was known for a lot of elaborate promotions, a lot of sales, a lot of corporate partnerships and stuff. It looks like that's what Miami sees as what an athletic director needs to be in this era, that you have to have connections to the agent world, right?
Starting point is 00:20:36 because you have to understand what it means to sign players, because that's literally what's happening these days. And you have to know about corporate sponsorship and fundraising. And, like, Your Mark is not necessarily the only candidate. There are a few other names out there, but it sounds like he's the frontrunner and he might be the guy. And hopefully, Kenton, that doesn't mean Miami pursues a bid for the Big 12. Hopefully this is not a grand Your Mark conspiracy,
Starting point is 00:21:01 because I don't want Miami going to the Big 12. I'm okay with where Miami's at right now. Well, I think that this is not just indicative of Miami making the change, but I think this is significant for all of college sports, because it's signifying a change away from what college sports used to be in a very meaningful way. I think this is one of the first administrative flags being planted in the ground to say, hey, the always day. It's gone. We've got to do it a new way.
Starting point is 00:21:28 And the new way is about that sales. It's about that promotion. It's about that, hey, it doesn't. when you think of the job of an athletic director, it is to, you know, foster an environment where your athletes and your athletic programs can have the greatest amount of success possible within the rules, of course, right? That's the job of the athletic director. Well, now that like you said, everything is more transactional than it ever was. There's more movement than there ever was. You need people who understand that movement.
Starting point is 00:21:59 You need people who understand that constant, hey, and we saw this where we're seeing multiple guys who have never been head coaches before. But coming head coaches and having success in year one, like we have never seen at a clip, we've never seen. We haven't seen. If you just look around the ACC in terms of football and basketball, how many first year coaches have we had that came in and their program basically did a 180? overnight. Overnight. You look at it, and even some of the ones you can say, well, that's an exceptional
Starting point is 00:22:35 situation or whatever, it still happened. You talk about Miami and Jay Lucas, Pat Kelsey up in Louisville. That team was, it was the Kenny Payne error, not error, error. And yet, in one year, boom,
Starting point is 00:22:50 they're back at the top of the ACC. UVA, oh man, they're going to be lost in the wilderness. Everybody said, y'all got too many Tonys with Bennett, Calandria, and Elliott, and all these. Too many thonets. They got rid of the one that actually had a national championship. And what happened to that basketball game,
Starting point is 00:23:08 the year after they get a new coach, or basketball team, rather, the year after they get a new coach, back at the top of the ACC, the FCC championship game in Paris. So this deal is different. It's a different ball game. And if you try to do it the archaic way, and this is no disrespect to them,
Starting point is 00:23:25 but look at the Tigers, trying to do it the archaic. I'll go do something else when they start paying players. How's that working out for you, big dog? I'll start working out. Because the coaches that are happy to pay their guys, the coaches that are jumping for Joyce and hey, they deserve to get paid.
Starting point is 00:23:40 How are all them doing? You know, it's a different world. And this AD search in Miami, it's not just about Miami. It's not even just about the ACC, even though this is locked on ACC. Thank you for being every day. But this is about all of college sports
Starting point is 00:23:55 transitioning into something else. Yeah, well said. So over the weekend, 13 different ACC football programs had a total of 38 players drafted into the National Football League. There are a handful of exceptions, though. Four teams did not. You want to keep it locked right here. We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Lockdowne ACC. Thank you for making Lockdown ACC your first listen.
Starting point is 00:24:23 He is Kenton Gibbs, former NC State defensive linemen and co-host of Lockdown Wolfpack. Make sure you make Locked on Wolfpack your next listen. And then for your following listen, check out Locked on Caines. I'm Alex Dono. I host that show talking all things Miami. So Miami and Clemson led the way with nine players drafted a piece. Every other ACC program except for these four, Kenton had players drafted. Virginia did not have anyone drafted.
Starting point is 00:24:55 Virginia Tech, Syracuse, who obviously had a tough year. and then also the North Carolina tar heels did not have anyone drafted Kenton. I'm sure you were really broken up about that, which was the first time since 2016. They didn't have a single player drafted. Now, I, you know, for as much as I enjoy, we enjoy trashing Bill Belichick, you know, it was one year there, Kenton. So it's like mostly coaching either, well, some of Mack Brown's players, but then a bunch of mercenaries he brought in through the,
Starting point is 00:25:29 transfer portal. It's like, I would assume North Carolina is going to have some players drafted in the future. How much of that do we put on Belichick? You know, I would say about 50% of it belongs to Belichick, because I can't out of one side of them off, and I know people are going to say, oh, you just say, hey, no, Bill and hating on UNC again. But let's be honest, in the last section of this show, what did I just end up talking about? How coaches turn programs around in one year flat. That's right. So how can, you and I give coaches all this credit for turning things around in one year. And then look at this coach and say, well, as to not seem biased,
Starting point is 00:26:08 I'm going to give you a pass for not having a single player drafted. That's not how this works. You have seven rounds of drafts about 32 picks per, you know, every now and then somebody got a pick revoked or something. And so you might have 31 picks in a couple rounds. Well, you got compensatory picks. Like there, you know, I think it average is out well over. 32. There you go. So it was out to over 32. And somehow we're sitting here saying, not a single player drafted and you want me to believe, well, it's just because it's the old coach's players. Well, who, what, what coach now gets that excuse of, well, it was the old coaches players and therefore everything's okay. Everything's fine. What coach gets that excuse in 2026? We live in a microwave society. You've got to produce right now. And the reality is, we've seen it. Who is? Who is?
Starting point is 00:26:59 the last national champion, Dono? Indiana. How long has Siggy been there? Two years. So we're getting Siggy with it in just two years up in Indiana. And he made the playoffs in his first year there. Hey now, but in year two, I'm sorry, but in year one here, this team is not supposed to be good. And mind you, mind you, everybody said, oh, yeah, well, that wasn't really Indiana.
Starting point is 00:27:22 That was basically James Madison in the big team. You're telling me that James Madison in the big team. Big Ten was supposed to be a playoff team? Is that what you're telling me? So again, this is not me particularly. Amy got Belichick. I would say the same about any coach at any school. If State was the same way, I would say,
Starting point is 00:27:44 but we wanted a few teams that have multiple players drive to shout out of Cleveland, Justin Joe Lake, but I didn't handle that. The reality is, again, this is 50% they didn't have those players to begin with. 50%. I mean, he's just not that guy anymore. Yeah. you on that.
