Starting point is 00:00:00 Kenton said earlier this week, and I agree that the ACC will probably deserve to have more than two teams in the college football playoff, but what are the odds of that actually happening? Starting point is 00:00:43 Download the GameTime app, create an account and use code Lockdown College for $20 off your first purchase. On this episode, we'll talk about who could be on upset alert out of the seven games involving ACC teams this weekend in college football. Biggest games of Week 10 and Kenton Gibbs, he's Kenton Gibbs from Lockdown Wolfpack. I am Alex Dono from Locked on Caines. You know, you said it earlier this week that, you know, the ACC probably could or should have, you know, more than two teams in the college football playoff. But if I made you predict it, how many teams do you think the ACC will have in the CFP once that field is announced? Well, before we get to that, I got choked up even thinking about this stat because this stat is ridiculous. to even think about.
Starting point is 00:01:34 I wish I had an assistant to come bring me some water here. We've got two teams, team A and team B. Team A is 7 and 0. Team B is 7 and 0. Team A has a 19 point per game victory margin. Team B has a similar 19 point game, 19 point per game margin of victory. Team A's opponent win percentage is 52.1. team B's opponent's winning percentage of 53.7.
Starting point is 00:02:06 Team A is 2 and O against the top 40 FPI. Team B is 2 and O versus top 40 FPI. Now, hypothetically, if both of these teams both played in Power 5 or Power 4 conferences, what do you think the difference that ranking would be between those two teams, hypothetically? I mean, it shouldn't be much, right? A spot or two? A spot or two.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Okay. Those two teams are Penn State. and Pitt. Penn State is third in the country. Pit is 18th. So when you talk about how many representatives will the ACC get, let's not, you know, honestly and truly, in my heart of hearts, if somebody said, again, the Martians got the death being pointed at the earth, right? The CIA got your mama. They pulling off toenails. They threaten in the water border. What are you going to do about it? I'm going to say, too.
Starting point is 00:03:01 But the reality of what it should be, we're talking about a Penn State team that we're looking at as the third best team in the nation. And meanwhile, everybody keeps telling me, if Pitt plays this team, if it plays that team, they won't be fed. Who gives a damn what Vegas thinks? Wow.
Starting point is 00:03:18 Vegas didn't give Utah a shot to beat Nick Saban and company down there. And they just couldn't do it. Vegas didn't give Ian Johnson and company a chance to beat the mighty Oklahoma sooners of that day. It wasn't going to happen. That's too long ago. Let's talk playoff era, right? Vegas didn't give TCU a standing shot
Starting point is 00:03:39 against the powerhouse that is the University of Michigan. Harbaugh was rolling too tough. They had too many running back. Best offensive line in the nation. They didn't have a shot. How'd that game in, Donna? I think the horn frogs advanced the national championship as the victims were not valiant on that day.
Starting point is 00:03:59 So I think that is something so interesting about why we keep bringing up. Well, who do you think? Who do you feel? I feel like the team that wins the games that are put in front of them will continue to do so. So whether or not I feel like the ACC will have more than two, I know good and damn what they deserve. This conference here deserves more than two teams of the player. Well, I mean, and part of like I close on on everything you said, right,
Starting point is 00:04:27 Pitt grossly underrated. Part of the reason why they're grossly underrated was they were so bad last year that they were behind the eight ball in the preseason rankings. And then the other major reason is like you said, they play in the ACC. Penn State plays in the Big Ten. Now Penn State's got Ohio State this weekend. So we'll see what happens in that one. You know, Pitt, Pitt has a couple of opportunities because they've got a couple difficult games left in conference. They still, you know, have to play SMU and they still have to play Clemson. So hopefully, hopefully by the end of the year, you know, the truth is told, you know, on the field.
Starting point is 00:05:02 And we'll see if Pitt finishes with a better record. But, you know, Kenton, when I bring up probabilities and why, the idea that there were, that there might be more than two ACC teams in the CFP seems very far-fetched because I'm looking at this. Not that this is not from the committee. This is not the college football playoff committee, but this is based on the ESPN-FPI, the Football Power Index, which is their analytics-based proprietary algorithm, and they have thrown out the odds of these teams making it to the college football playoff. And I want people to know, because I've already seen the reactions to Miami being at the top, this is not their prediction of who's going to win the championship.
Starting point is 00:05:44 This is their prediction of who's going to make it into the 12-team field. and I understand why Miami is at the top of that list, because if you look at Miami's remaining schedule, they already 8-0, you look at Miami's remaining schedule and compare it to all of the other teams in that field. Miami theoretically, I'm not saying they win their remaining four games, but they should.
Starting point is 00:06:05 So theoretically, you can understand why Miami would have the top odds to actually make it into the CFP. And even if Miami were to run the table regular season, even if they were to lose, let's say a close, close game to a Clemson in the ACC championship game, their odds of being a second ACC to get in would still be pretty high there. But then Kent and I look for other ACC teams on the list. The next one on that list is Clemson at just a 31.9% chance to make it to the CFP, Miami at 89.6. Clemson just 31.9%. So they would say it's worse than a coin flip
Starting point is 00:06:42 that Clemson gets in. SMU, who also is, you know, undefeated in conference, one loss. They're going to have a chance to maybe get into the ACC championship game, just 29.6%. Pitt, who's undefeated overall this year, just a 20% chance to get in. So Kenton, the only team with a better than 31.9% chance, according to ESPN's FPI is Miami.
Starting point is 00:07:08 It doesn't sound like the ACCC is going to get more than two in, if even two. This FBI predictive model is so interesting. So this was put together by ESPN, Greg Donald. Yeah, yeah. And which conferences does ESPN have the biggest deal with? Which conference, just out of curiosity? Well, SEC is the one that they pay the most money to, yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:35 And then the ACC has to deal with them too, but it's significantly small, don't you think? Yeah, it is a smaller deal, yeah. Interesting. Because I see one, two, three, well, What, 12? You have 24 teams up here. And I believe I see 12 SEC teams with an 18.7% chance or better chance of getting it? Hmm, that's so interesting. That's so interesting.
Starting point is 00:07:59 Let's count them out loud just for the people who are listening and not watching. We've got Ole Miss who has looked wildly underwhelming. We've got LSU. We've got Texas A&M. We've got BAMO. We've got Tennessee. We've got Georgia. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:08:15 So not 12. seven of the 24 rather. Hmm, that's so interesting, isn't it, Donno? Isn't it? These predictive models work out in such interesting ways. I'm sorry, I miscounted there a little bit. My bad, y'all. It happens to the best of us.
Starting point is 00:08:32 17 years of playing football ain't great for the memory. But I think that that's so fascinating that teams that have underwhelmed, teams that have looked bad, teams that are objectively not who we thought they were. I'm looking at you, Bama, are so high here. Well, we'll think about this, Kenton. You think about this. Bama, Bama has two losses, and they have a 32.3% better chance than Pitt to get into the CFP.
Starting point is 00:09:03 What is that? And Pitt's undefeated, by the way. Bama's got two losses, and they have a 32.3% better chance to get in. not only that, not only that, Donald, I think you're leaving out a small detail here. They have two losses,
Starting point is 00:09:17 but let's look at Old Miss for a second. How many losses do they have? They have two as well, correct? Two losses, yeah. Just out of curiosity, how many ranked teams has Old Miss beaten all year? Just off the top of your head.
Starting point is 00:09:33 How many? Zero. I'm saying none. Congratulations. If you're watching this show, you have beaten this. as many ranked teams as late given this year. And yet somehow, somehow, but here's the craziest part about the whole thing down there's the
Starting point is 00:09:49 crazy part about the whole thing. They're said to be a team that can still get in because they can beat Georgia, right? Hypothetically. Right. They could beat Georgia. Could. I mean, they won't, but they could. But if they did, wouldn't that make Georgia a two-loss team as well as them?
Starting point is 00:10:05 Yeah. Two teams are two-lossed. It's what you talked about last. week. An SEC team losing to an SEC team, it's a bye week. Oh, man. Oh, look at those great teams. Oh, look at old Jackson dark. Cannibalizing each other, I tell you. Meanwhile, Pitt and SMU are going to have a playing game. And this is the last thing I'll say. Ohio State and Penn State. We just talked about the similarities between Pitt and Penn State and how they're 15 spots apart despite having virtually identical resume. Ohio State versus Penn State. You have a one-lost team against an undefeated team.
Starting point is 00:10:44 Pitt against SMU. You have a one-loss team against the undefeated team. Both one-lossed teams lost to a team that is still currently undefeated and in the Power 4 conference. So what are we doing here? Stang, oh, that game is a, you know, whichever team loses this game is eliminated. And yet we are all comfortable knowing,
Starting point is 00:11:04 we are all comfortable sleeping at night with the fact that whoever loses between Penn State and Ohio State, you're good. Just don't lose anymore. You'll be okay. I just love how they expand this from, you know, obviously before there was a playoff, you'd have two that get in. We all argued about that. They need to expand it to four.
Starting point is 00:11:22 We can stop complaining. Well, they expand it to four. You know, they somehow screw Florida State over last year. And they ruined that program, quite frankly, because now Florida State can only win a game so far this year. And now we're arguing over which. 12 might get in. So this is why college football is the greatest sport in the world.
Starting point is 00:11:42 But we all know the ACC is probably going to get screwed by this thing. But we have a lot more to talk about because there are games in the conference this weekend that are not only going to help decide who could play in the ACC championship game, but who might stay alive for a college football playoff berth. I mean, you know, Miami at the top of the odds right now at over 89%. But if they lose to Duke this weekend, that percentage is going to plummet. You guys want to keep it locked right here. Alex Dono from Lockdown Keynes, Kenton Gibbs from Lockdown Wolfpack.

Starting point is 00:14:01 And so NC State coming off the by week, double-digit favorites, KG against Stanford. You know, outside of that great game that Stanford played at Syracuse, I don't know how much faith I have in the Cardinal. Do you think this is going to be another dub for C.J. Bailey and company? Yeah, I think C.J. Bailey keeps rolling. I look at Stanford and I truly say, and I hate to say this about a team, they're a rudderless ship right now. Where is the direction? Where are they going, right? You want to say, well, hey, Alec Iron Manor and Ashton Davis have a special connection.
Starting point is 00:14:37 Do they? Do they really? You know, it's at times this season, nothing. has going right for them. And they got that bad case that can't get rightitis, can't get out of their way, even in the worst of situations. And say what you want about NC State fans. That may be a little delusional. They may be a little honorary, but I'll tell you what, they are some of the most passionate fans in all the land. And they're going to show up for homecoming especially with Stanford coming to town. And, you know, it's a trip across country. We've seen it already this year. Those cross country trips produce some funky things. Teams. I know Stanford got a win against Syracuse last time they came over to the East Coast,
Starting point is 00:15:17 but by and large, the team doing the traveling has wildly underperformed in these games against the spread. And they're already up against the spread negative 10. I mean, I'm sorry, plus 10 rather for them. Plus 10, yeah. You know, if they underperform against that, what does that look like? That game is going to be 12 noon Saturday on ACC Network. We're kind of jumping around the schedule here a little bit. But another game, this one's going to be 730 on ESPN, number 11 Clemson.
Starting point is 00:15:48 They're also coming off a buy week. They're hosting Louisville. And Louisville is so talented. A lot of times this year, they just can't get out of their own way. Now, they did manage you after falling behind 20 to nothing against Boston College. They did manage to churn out a big comeback last week to, you know, bounce back from that shootout loss they had to Miami the week prior. Louisville is super talented, but I totally understand why they're double-digit underdogs.
Starting point is 00:16:15 The 11th ranked tigers are 10.5 point favorites against Louisville. Here's a stat for you, Kenton. Clemson has won their last 15 home games when coming off a buy week. So they have always been, and, you know, this is Dabo Sweeney era, and then a little bit on top of that, they have always been very prepared and rested. They've taken advantage coming off buys. that's the situation they're going to be in against Louisville. I mean, not only that.
Starting point is 00:16:44 Death Valley is still Death Valley. Let's not play around. Let's not play with it. Let's not sit here and pretend like, oh, you know, they got dropped by Georgia, so Dead Valley lost his luster. It surely has not. And with that being said, I think that the Cardinals, if they find a way to pull this game out,
Starting point is 00:17:03 that second half against Boston College will be the moment looked at it. Hey, this is where they turned their season around. With that being said, I don't think they can. I think they're just up against too much of a buzzsaw. I think Clems is playing some of its best football of the season right now. And, you know, I look at this team and I say to myself, hey, do we look at them and say, you let up too much against Virginia, you're a bad team because of that,
Starting point is 00:17:31 or you let Florida State play you too close and you're a bad team because of that? To me, that tells me how good of a team that you are. I say the same thing about Miami a lot. The fact that we're saying, oh, teams are playing you too close. Well, damn it, that says some about how great that offense is. We know the struggles that they've had in the secondary and with tackling and whatnot. But the fact that teams being close is enough for us to look at you with a suspicious eye. That means you're doing phenomenal things, which cannot be argued against Davo right now.
Starting point is 00:17:58 He has proven all of us wrong. He has shut all of us up. No portal necessary. They're putting belt behind. Yeah. Yeah. And I actually, I remember. talking about this before the season started that I we were we were fascinated heading into the
Starting point is 00:18:12 year to see how clemson would do despite the fact that they they don't they don't take transfers I mean I think they've they've taken two portal guys since the portal was was invented so it's you know they've taken a couple guys over the years but not not the way that every other major program does so it's actually I think it's pretty neat that dabbo has found this so much this has found this much success despite the fact that he has not embraced the modern era of college football 3.30 p.m. Saturday on ESPN network. Florida State Seminels, can they find their second win of the year? There are two and a half point underdogs at home against North Carolina. We know UNC can put up points. They can score. Florida State's got a good defense. UNC's defense has been shaky, but they're going up against one of the worst offenses in the country.
Starting point is 00:18:59 Like something's got to give in this one. And Kenton, I, um, forgive me for feeling like the more L. that the Seminoles have piled up this year. You can see, I feel like, I know they haven't had like a huge rash of guys like opting out and literally quitting on the team, but it doesn't really seem like they've stayed engaged. I think they're in a bit of a spiral. You know, I was reading some comments for Mike Norvell earlier today saying, you know, he wasn't, he wasn't impressed by their practice on Wednesday. So it's like they don't really seem like they're active participants in their own recovery.
Starting point is 00:19:36 So I can obviously understand why UNC is favored on the road. I just, I don't know, you know, Florida State's defense can play, but their offense is so bad, Kent, and they probably will lose at home this weekend. Oh, they're absolutely losing this game. The Tar Hills are going to, they're going to do a lot more than make sure Florida State doesn't cover that spread. Let me tell you why.
Starting point is 00:20:00 Jacoby-Criswell, while he is not perfect, is good enough to get you some offense. And not to mention, they've got some guy in the backfield. What's that kid's name? It's some funny language or another. I don't know. They eat beans and toast or something like that over there. Oh, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:20:18 It's O'Maryon Hampton. One of the baddest rushers in all of the land. And I'm telling you this right now. The reality of this game is simple, okay? When I look at this game, I see one problem that it will ultimately be Florida States undoing that I can virtually guarantee in this one. Florida State, while they have not had guys opt out, if you watch their body language during the game, they have had guys quit.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Yeah. They have had guys who are like, I mean, I'm here, I guess. I can tell from the lack of effort, the amount of guys I see loaf into the ball, and the amount of guys I see making business decisions when it's time to time. You brought up time. I don't have the kid. Hoo! Just look at the season he's having.
Starting point is 00:21:05 I mean, you brought up Amari and Hampton. The video viewers can see this graphic. And Florida State last week gave up 148 rushing yards to Damien Martinez at Miami. They gave up 230 total rushing yards to the hurricanes. And now they've got Amari in Hampton who is averaging 125.8 yards per game. He and Basial Tutin are on top of the mountain right now in the. the ACC. They're the only two backs in the conference that are averaging over 100 yards, but Hampton, 125.8. So a Florida state, like, they've got a good pass rush and they've got a
Starting point is 00:21:42 good passing defense, but they've been vulnerable on the ground, Kenton. This is not a good matchup for them going up against Hampton. Not at all. Run defense is all about effort and focus. That's really more than anything else. Sometimes a passing defense, that other guy is just better. You can be in a perfect position. and that guy's just a little bit better than you and he makes it happen. If you are perfectly positioned in a run game, if there's a gap, a hat,
Starting point is 00:22:08 a gap, by a hat, by a hat, I mean defender in every gap. Guess what happens? That running back goes, thoink, and then he bounces, and, you know, the other guy's there in the next gap, and then he goes down, okay? This Florida State team doesn't happen. They don't have guys who are like, my gap is everything to me.
Starting point is 00:22:27 Protecting this B gap means the world to me, and I'm not going to give it up. They just don't have that. They don't have that. I've talked about this before, but I mean it. They play in title. They play like, hey, we're here. You should roll over.
Starting point is 00:22:40 And at this point, we've seen, what, seven teams, not roll over? Like, when are you going to get the message? You know, and the lack of participation in the race thing that Norville did was enough for me to see. Yeah, this team's packed it up. They packed it in. We've decided to try again next year. We're going to punt this season. It's probably back to a one-man race again.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Are you guys behind me? Are you there? Are you racing me? Well, when we come back, I would say two biggest games this weekend. Duke at Miami and Pitt at SMU. Those games are going to be massive when it comes to ACC championship game picture, college football playoff implications. You guys want to keep it locked right here.
Starting point is 00:23:23 We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC. Thank you so much for making Lockdown ACC your first listen and your first watch today. Make sure you also check out Lockdown College football. Spencer McLaughlin does an awesome job. Our guy Kenton co-hosts a show on that channel, Locked on College Football, available on YouTube and available free wherever you get your podcasts. You know, when I look, Kenton at Duke at Miami, there's obviously a lot that's going to go in Miami's favor there,
Starting point is 00:24:01 the two dimensions of their offense, because Duke, Duke has been very good against the past. They're number 12 in the country and past defense. Obviously, they haven't faced a passing offense like Miami's, which is second and FBS, first in Power 4. But, you know, Miami did. They were slowed down a little bit in the passing game against Florida State. But we saw Miami turn the running game on,
Starting point is 00:24:25 and Duke is 88th against the run this season. So if Damien Martinez and Mark Fletcher can kind of pick up where they left off the last couple of weeks, that's going to be big for Miami's offense. And for Duke's offense, they've not only have they been, they've been inconsistent, Kenton, and there's some talent there. You know, Malik Murphy has made some really big time throws and big time runs this year, but they haven't been consistent and they haven't been opportunistic. Like, you think about all the opportunities and the short fields that they had when they produced
Starting point is 00:24:56 six turnovers, six takeaways, I should say, against SMU last week and they couldn't take advantage. Now, at the same time, they forced six takeaways against SMU. you. Maybe they can force a handful against Miami. I can understand why Miami is favored. I still think the number is very big. It's around 20 points. It's shrunk a little bit. So there must be some money coming in on Duke. But it's hard to imagine Miami losing this game outright at home. Losing outright is not happening. However, Miami has flirted with disaster all year. There's a chart out here that says the average distance to go and how often the team
Starting point is 00:25:36 converge to their third downs, okay? Miami has the highest, the longest distance to go average with a conversion rate that puts them on the plus side. That nobody has more yards to cover than them and yet consistently converts them to the point where they're technically outside of the wild football range. Here's the deal. They got to stay on skimper. They have to stay on skimper. You have to, have to have to run the ball in this game. They have to do it. Donald's just pulled up the grab for me. They have to, have to.
Starting point is 00:26:14 There's a reason Miami is above everybody else here because they complete their, they complete third downs. They convert third downs at a higher percent than anybody. However, that average length ago, uh-uh. Nah, nah. Having seven purr is flatly unacceptable.
Starting point is 00:26:32 They need to be able to use Martinez, is to use Fletcher, to use the short passing game to keep themselves ahead of sticks and not just count on a Cam Ward. Go do the magic thing. Go do it. Because there's going to come a day. There's going to come a time. I don't care who you are, how great you are.
Starting point is 00:26:49 Anytime you're relied upon to be a magician constantly, eventually that wand is going to run out of magic. And that's just the way it's going to go. So if they want to be Duke, you have to stay ahead of schedule. With that being said, I think 20 is a crazy line. I think it's down to what, 18 now? Something like that. Still a crazy lot.
Starting point is 00:27:08 Yeah, I think it's in the 19 range now. And what you're talking about with third down distance, especially important this week, because what does Duke's defense love to do? They love to blitz more than almost anyone in the country. They love to bring pressure. Mani Diaz, their head coach, who's a former great defensive coordinator. He loves to get into that lab and experiment,
Starting point is 00:27:33 disguising his pressure. It's better than anybody. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So it's especially important this week. And listen, I agree, you know, in the 20 range, 1920, it does seem like a high number. But I can understand, you know, why Miami would be double-digit favorites.
Starting point is 00:27:52 You know, another team who's favored by more than a touchdown, not double digits, but 20th ranked SMU hosting number 18 pit. Now, I think it goes without saying, SMU, needs to play a lot better than they played against Duke last week. They, you commit six turnovers. You can't roll the dice like that two weeks in a row against a Pitt team that I believe is significantly better than Duke. And you saw what Pitt, when it came to forcing turnovers, you saw what Pitt did against Syracuse, five interceptions, three pick, six is in the game.
Starting point is 00:28:24 How do you think this one's going to play out, Kenton? Because honestly, I am, I am open-minded to any outcome in that game. I can understand, I guess, why SMU is favored, but Pitt has defied the odds all season long. Yeah, I know how much I love SMU. Still waiting for my dog, sure will blunt to get free, you know, still waiting on all those boosters from the pony excess to get free, you know. With that being said, there's blood in the water.
Starting point is 00:28:51 That's the most human Kevin Jennings has looked all season. And the sharks are going hunt. The sharks are going hunt. If you don't know, that is what Pittsburgh calls. calls their lineback in court. And let me tell you something. Did I not talk about them earlier this season, I know, when we talked about the West Virginia game in the crossroad?
Starting point is 00:29:09 What did I say? That lineback and core is the key. When you do your research on these teams, you know who's going to carry the mail. And that lineback and core will carry the mail in this game. And here's the most interesting thing about SMU. We talked about their wide receiver core and all that. But they have been doing it by and large by having a very balanced attack.
Starting point is 00:29:30 Rashard Smith, one of the leading rushers in the ACC, Kevin Jennings, one of leading rush among quarterbacks in the ACC, despite him not starting a lot of games here. We are looking at a situation where SMU's offense, Rhett Latchley, has done a phenomenal job of saying, you know what, I don't have to outsmart myself. We have the players to just stay on schedule, just go ahead, do what we need to do.
Starting point is 00:29:51 We'll run the concept that we like a lot through the past game, but we don't want to put ourselves in positions where we got to hit bomb after bomb after bomb, where we got to ask Kevin Jennings go do math. Because his wine has a lot less expecto patronum than Cam Wars. Okay. So we're not going to do that to him. With that being said, I believe, again, the sharks will hunt in this game.
Starting point is 00:30:13 I think Richard is going to have a real, real tough battle up against those dudes. And I think that pick comes out on top because they're the Rodney Dangerfield of college football. And damn it, they want their respect and they're trying to earn it. Oh, man. Well, I'm looking forward to it. big slated games this coming weekend. He is Kenton Gibbs from Lockdown Wolfpack. Follow him on X at TGIF underscore Kenton. I am Alex Dono from Lockdown Keynes.
