There are a lot of new quarterbacks in the ACC, but how many schools have full out, full-blown quarterback competition starting this spring?

We'll talk about the latest college basketball bracketology for the ACC, also the ACC tournament picture,
because the regular season's about to wrap up.
We'll talk spring football storylines,
including quarterback competitions.
And now, Kenton, I've got to say,
I'm feeling some FOMO because most ACCC schools have started spring ball this week
or are starting.
Miami is still like 20 days away from starting spring ball.
So I'm trying to see what's going on at all these other 16 schools.
Now, NC State, they started spring ball already, correct?
Yeah, I believe so.
NC State has started spring ball.
And I mean, Dono, at the end of the day, if you look at the results from last year based on when teams started, I wouldn't give a damn, okay?
Because there were some teams that started later than we expected that ended up better.
There were some teams that started earlier where it's like, violate them NCAA rules.
Get in some extra practices.
You hear me?
Yeah.
Get in some extra practices.
Because what you put out on that field last year, unacceptable condition.
Unacceptable.
So, you know, you shouldn't feel too bad besides, at least.
you get to miss out on having a wonderful quarterback competition that we're going to talk about a little
later. Yeah, well, on three sports examined the quarterback situations of every power four team.
And they started with what they refer to as the full-blown competitions, right? The teams where we
legitimately have no idea who the starter is going to be. There's not a clear favorite. And one
ACC school made the list. All four schools, Alabama,
is it Austin Mac or Keelan Russell? Iowa.
Is it Jeremy Hecklinsky or Hank Brown?
Tennessee, I know they're kind of in a mess because Joey Aguilar, they thought was going to be able to come back,
but he was denied at court.
George McIntyre or Phazon Brandon.
Phazon Brandon is a super talented true freshman, top quarterback in the country coming out of high school,
but he's a true freshman.
And then you've got Virginia, the team in the ACC that they consider to have a full-blown quarterback
competition.
And what makes this even more exciting, Kenton, is no matter what,
it's going to be at least a straight up two-man competition between transfers
Beau Probula from Missou, Eli Holstein, who transfers in conference from Pitt,
who two years ago had a really good year.
But then there's also the matter of, is Chandler Morris going to get granted another
season in court?
And if that happens, Morris becomes, I would imagine, likely the guy.
Like, is Chandler Morris going to have to compete with two other guys after what he did last year?
I don't know about that one.
Well, here's the interesting thing about it, Dono.
They're going through the courts with Chandler Morris right now, correct?
Yeah.
Chandler Morris is not practicing with the team as of now, correct?
Correct.
He is in school, but I don't believe he's allowed to practice.
So while we can say, like, he was the, he's the incumbent.
and he had that position last year,
these are valuable reps.
These are valuable reps.
And ultimately, we will see if, even if he does come back,
he'll probably get better as the season goes on,
like most quarterbacks do when they have these situations
where you're out for large swaths of the offseason,
which is just what that would be.
But I'll tell you what, if Chandler Morris comes back,
there is no competition.
With all due respect to Bo Pergula,
with all due respect to Eli Holstein,
go ahead and get into the shadow.
portal with Brian Smith. You understand? It's time to go get that show going because there's no reason
for either of them to stick around really when both of them are just about at the end of their
careers. Eli Holstein burned his red shirt. Wasn't he at Alabama? Didn't he start at Bamma or am I?
He started at Bamma. He started Bamma. He redshirted there. Boke Bula started a Penn State redshirted
there. So you're looking at two guys that, you know, time is running out. You can't just sit around
forever. So that, that Chairman Morris thing could throw a monkey rich in it. But even without
Chairman Morris, I think that'll be a very intriguing competition because Perbula and Holstein,
we've seen some really good ball out of both, but we've also seen some really bad ball.
And we can attribute Perbula's bad ball to injury, but how well is he coming back off of those?
you could say, well, there were little nagging injuries,
but to me, a little nagging injury that kind of these small things
that make you worse throughout the year is worse to me than a major injury for this reason.
With a major injury, you know what you're getting.
You know, okay, he's going to take some time to come back and be his full self.
Those little lingering injuries, people expect right away for you to be the same guy
come to next season.
And a lot of times that happens, sometimes it doesn't.
So ultimately, these are two guys who had falloffs for,
for different reasons, but I think I'd be very interested to see how that quarterback competition lands.
Yeah, I mean, Pribula is the favorite, you know, this is assuming Chandler Morris doesn't come back,
which like you mentioned, he's probably the starter if he comes back.
But if it's the competition between Pribula and Holstein,
Pribula is considered the favorite, you know, with a full year of SEC starting experience,
was a highly touted backup at Penn State prior to going to Missou.
But like you said, you know, however we attribute it to,
the numbers were not good last year.
I mean, under 2,000 passing yards, 11 touchdowns to nine interceptions.
That's not a good ratio.
But then, like, with Eli Holstein, it's like if he's so good, how did he lose his starting
job the second year and didn't look good before he was supplanted by Mason Heinzschel,
who ended up having a great year.
So like neither of these guys are great.
I mean, I guess it's like you're happy.
You have two of them and they're going to bring out the best in one another.
And they both have similar.
rushing stats as well.
Like they both can move a little bit.
I don't give,
maybe you could say Prubula,
but then Holstein two years ago rushed for like 328 yards.
Pribula rushed for about 300 last year.
So they both have some dual threat capabilities.
So on paper,
I don't think either has a big edge over one another.
But Pribula is probably going to get the nod from fans because of the SEC thing.
As we all know,
if you have two quarterbacks,
how many do you actually have, Donald?
none or like 0.5 maybe.
Exactly. Exactly. And so a decision will need to be made here.
And I'll tell you, Tony Elliott has earned a lot. And when I say a lot, I mean a lot of positive credit that he has kind of in goodwill that he's kind of stored up in the bank based on last year's performance, which was one of the UVA's best in quite some time to, you know, get to the ACC championship and whatnot.
one of these quarterbacks may be the reason that he needs to use more of it.
One of them may be an extension of that line of credit.
We will see coming up in the future here, but I do think, like you said,
there's very interesting information from both sides here, right?
Like if you look at what Holstein did freshman year,
before he got injured, it was basically the Eli Holstein Award,
not ACC freshman of the week, because every week it was hosting,
hosting, hosting, hosting, hosting, and guess who it is,
the next week, hosting again, correct.
You're a smart person picking up on those patterns until he got hurt,
which kind of dampened his season,
and then he comes back and isn't the same guy.
So it's the same way that he lost his spot because he just kind of couldn't get out
of his head and isn't the same guy.
You would hope and project that Pervula doesn't have those same problems.
It may happen.
It may happen.
So there's a lot here.
Like you said, the starting SEC experience is always going to send people's antennas up.
the thing is I'm a huge fan of Coach Drink.
And if you can't succeed with Coach Drink as your head coach,
that's a good point.
I'm kind of, and don't get me wrong,
I love Pence offensive coordinator.
However, it's, I'm, I'm torn here because, again,
both of these guys, I think, could be quality quarterbacks.
Both of them can't get somebody fired.
That's just the reality of what we're looking at here.
So, you know, when we come back,
objectively the best-looking quarterback situations in the ACC
belong to Miami and SMU.
It's a reason a lot of people have those two teams in the ACC championship game
penciled in for next year.
You don't expect quarterback competitions there, certainly not.
But we'll talk about some of the storylines.
Plus, yeah, Virginia full-blown quarterback competition,
but low-key might not be the only school that has competitions going on at that position.
You want to keep it locked right here.
We're only getting started on this brand new episode of Lockdowne ACC.
I'm Clea Butler, host of Lockdown Women's Basketball.
And this is Mazda's Women's Basketball Snapshot, celebrating the work no highlight real can ever capture.
Number one ranked Yukon dominated St. John's 85 to 49 on Sunday at Madison Square Garden,
extending its winning streak to 47 games.
The Huskies kept a perfect 31 and O regular season, including 20 and O in the
Big East.
Yukon is winning by nearly 38 points per game, the third largest average margin in Division
1 history.
Since 1999 to 2000, Yukon has nine undefeated regular seasons, as many as all other programs
combined and has turned six of those into national championships.
These moments are earned off the clock, those long before the lights ever come on, the sweat,
the fakes, the doubt, the scrapes, and coming back for more every time.
Mazda puts that same drive into every detail.
Wins to find the moment, putting in the work, that defines you.
There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you.

So yeah, you could say full-blown competition belonging to Virginia, but wouldn't you, I mean,
if I'm going to take the coach himself at face value, like,
Like Dabo Sweeney said they're not just handing the starting job to Chris Vizina,
who's the redshirt junior, who was Cade Clubnix backup the last couple of years.
But like, he's going to have to earn that against Chris Denson, who's a redshirt freshman,
Tate Reynolds and Brock Bradley, who are true freshmen.
And there's another redshirt freshman, Trent Pierman, who's in the mix.
So, you know, the reason why you wouldn't say full-blown is there's a clear favorite there with Vizina.
but when Dabo tells you we're keeping this thing open, spring and fall camp,
I take that at face value.
He wants the cream to rise to the top.
There are very few head coaches in all of college football that have as proven of a track record,
for I will replace your tail if you are not doing what we need done.
And let's go beyond that, even if you are just doing what we need done.
And I see another guy can give us a little more juice, a la Kelly Bryant,
being replaced as the starting quarterback because some 6-6 kid with this long flowing hair can do a little bit more.
He can put a little bit more stank on it than you can, even though Kelly Bryant had done nothing wrong.
He done nothing that you would say, this is not a good ACC quarterback, but he said, I think I got a great one on the bench.
So if there's any team that I would look at and say, even when that season starts, their quarterback battle isn't over.
it's the tigers in South Carolina.
That paw on the helmet means that any quarterback can be replaced at any time.
And Davo has shown us he's not afraid to pull the trigger.
So you're absolutely right that him saying the Davo ain't one of the men's words.
And when he says, hey, he has polled position, but he ain't won the race.
That's absolutely saying something.
Now, what about North Carolina?
Because I'm kind of surprised, Kenton, that every, like, public.
that's talking about who's going to be the starting quarterback at which school.
They all just write Billy Edwards in former Wisconsin starter who transferred in.
They all just write him in as the automatic starter.
It's like from where you and I sit,
they also bring in to Ron Dickens,
who's a transfer from Western Carolina.
So it doesn't come from a Power 4 program the way that Edwards does.
But like Dickens, different level of football, I guess,
but he has been better than Billy Edwards, right?
And, you know, sometimes former group of six quarterbacks, which is what Dary and Mensa was a couple years ago, now he's the hottest thing since sliced bread.
I mean, I say, assuming Belichick has a competition there throughout spring and fall, I would not be surprised if Tehran Dickens, who threw for over 3,500 yards and threw for 38 touchdowns last year, ends up beating out Billy Edwards, who is not only returning from a knee injury, which was season ending for him last season, but, you know, wasn't doing it.
all that great while he played.
Here's the thing. People are going to tell me
I'm hating because it's North Carolina. I genuinely
don't see the hype around Billy Edwards.
I would be deeply concerned.
If I was the rest of the ACC,
I would be praying that Bill Belichick does the same
thing he did last year where he picks a guy
and he rides with that guy to the wheels fall off.
And that guy's name is Billy Edwards this year.
I would be praying, wishing, and hoping.
Yes, we are all terrified of Billy Edwards.
nobody wants to see really Edwards
understanding he's a scary
scary man because I think
the Dixon not only adds a high ceiling
than what he does I think the floor
is also higher I think the floor of him
and his words is also higher
than what you would see from Edwards
and again like you just said
he's coming off a major knee injury
where we're just sitting here
pretending like oh yeah he's going to bounce back
and be the same guy like I talked about before
the good thing about those
you know, seasoning injuries and whatnot,
is generally you understand this guy will be a reduced version of himself.
So we have to tailor things and cater things to his limitations, right?
Now, imagine saying that and then saying,
oh, the other guy might be more talented too.
What to me, that's an open and shut case.
If anything, it would not be a competition the other way.
It would be, hey, Bill, we're excited to have you.
Put on this ball cap, hold this clipboard.
Get him ready the best you can for Saturdays.
Yeah.
And hey, even, you know, the teams that have, like, no questions about who the starting quarterback is going to be,
there's some intriguing things to look for.
You know, I'm going to be covering spring ball at Miami.
March 24th is when we're expecting that to open.
And, yeah, I'm sure I'm going to be very anxious to watch Darien Mensa,
you know, how he looks running drills, how quickly he fits in with his receivers,
his weapons, the offense, all that.
But I'm also going to be looking at Miami's backups
because you have to wonder,
is the future starting quarterback at the U?
Is he on the roster right now?
Or is it going to be another transfer portal carousel in 2027,
the way Miami's done for the past few years?
Because Miami's got some guys that I like in backup roles, Kenton.
You know, Luke Nicol, he's getting some praise for off-season workouts
heading into his second year as a former four-star recruit out of the state of Georgia.
Darion Coleman, a four-star recruit out of Orlando coming in as a true freshman.
I've watched him play high school ball, and his arm talent is insane.
Like he's a little on the small side, a little slight of frame,
which is why he wasn't a five-star prospect, but just strictly the armed talent is his five-star level.
So I'm definitely going to be looking to see if the next guy is on the roster.
And then SMU is the other, you know, most stable quarterback situation, maybe even more so because Kevin Jennings is going to be in his third year in that offense.
So that's valuable stability.
But again, you want to be looking at the backups.
And, you know, one of the backups, Kenton is no longer a player.
He joined the staff.
I don't know if you heard Tyler Van Dyke, who I covered at Miami, who despite like missing essentially two full years due to injury, still has two years of eligibility left in his mid-20s.
But he decided to learn some Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
Well, he actually joined the coaching staff.
So he transitioned from the roster to the coaching staff.
So Van Dyke is out of the mix there.
They've got some young backups, redshirt freshman, Ty Hawkins.
Cole Linert, as a true freshman, the son of Matt Linerd is there at SMU.
That's interesting.
And an experienced backup, Charlie Fizer, who's a redshirt senior.
So with SMU as well, you want to see if, you know, covering spring ball.
and everything is their next starting quarterback
after Kevin Jennings on the roster right now?
The level of
old I feel hearing
Matt Liner's son
is that weird.
Yeah. Oh, God.
I was a kid watching Matt Line.
I was, we're not a kid no more.
We'll never be those kids again in the words of Frank Ocean.
But, you know, I am intrigued to see these things
and I'm going to tell you this, Don't.
You're asking is Miami's future starter in their quarterback room currently?
Well, let's go back a year in the portal.
Let's do our Sherman and Mr. Peabody again.
In 2025, was the future starter in the room?
No.
What about 2024?
No.
What about 2023?
In 2023, that was Van Dyke, but I'm actually happy they went out of the room.
Well, actually, no, he was the guy already in the room.
And that didn't go so well.
So 2024 and 25 went a lot better.
All right.
So I think that this is kind of what Mario wants to do.
I think that he's establishing like, hey, we'll go out and we'll get the top quarterback every year.
And we'll roll the dice with that because it seems to me that they feel very comfortable saying we would rather trust a super senior to build rapport and make all the things happen in a year than to kind of.
do the work of quarterback development and kind of getting these guys out of bad habits and
getting them to play the way we want and all that good stuff. That seems to be the answer there.
But now, as far as the backup situations for all of these teams, I'm going to tell you this much.
Most of the teams that are set at quarterback, the backup situations are not so terrible to where
you're like, oh, if this quarterback goes down, we're absolutely screwed.
And I would probably like to thank Syracuse for that because Syracuse showed us last year the value of a backup quarterback.
and almost every team that has a, you know, that has either an incumbent or a really good starter,
almost every team went out and made a move to get a backup, to get somebody to be that second guy,
unless, again, they had the guy already in the room, but that's just as in backup, you know,
responsibility.
So the teams that do have their quarterback situation set out, you're only one play away from not having to figure it out anymore.
And we learned that from Syracuse.
We saw last year.
That was a team that beat Clemson handily, by the way.
It wasn't like they needed some last second heroics to beat Clemson.
No, they led for a majority of that game by a good amount.
And the question was, can they hold on to this one, right, before, you know, their quarterback goes down and all that.
So ultimately, you're asking yourself the exact same thing here in terms of with all these teams.
You're just saying, do they have a guy that can just navigate the waters?
We're not looking for a guy to be a master in that backup position because in today's football,
it ain't like it used to be where you could have, you know, speaking of Matt Liner,
Carson Palmer and Matt Liner in the same room.
That's not like that anymore.
It's not like that.
If you get one of them, the other one is going to go somewhere else and make himself a check.
And he may return.
He may not.
Right.
But the reality is what we're looking at is a very different situation in terms of stockpiling talent.
Quarterback is just at one position.
You need to have at least two that can.
You know, just take the reins of the ship and make sure that thing don't capsize.
Yeah, no, that's well said.
All right, let's talk some basketball on the other side.
So now we're looking, according to ESPN Bracketology, at eight teams in the NCAA tournament.
And one of the teams that's in is on the bubble.
Now, I'm obviously, you know, I'm not going to be rooting for SMU tonight, Kenton to get off the bubble because they play Miami tonight.
So, you know, I hope Miami bounces them even farther.
down on that bubble. I hope it doesn't pop, though, because I want the ACC to get as many teams
in as possible. We'll talk about last night's scores and what's coming up before the ACC tournament.
You want to keep it locked right here. We're not done yet on this brand new episode of locked

They talk all things NC State.
All right.
So KG results from last night.
Louisville, they're obviously in strong position as an NCAA tournament team.
But they are outside the top four in the ACC.
so they're trying to grab a double buy.
They beat Syracuse 77 to 62.
Virginia Tech over Boston College, 72 to 63.
North Carolina wins yet again.
What a stretch run they're on.
67 to 63 over Clemson.
That was a meaningful result.
And number 13, Virginia, 75 to 70 against Wake Forest, Virginia,
second seed right now in the ACC tournament.
So those are big results.
I mentioned SMU.
They're in the tournament.
tournament as of right now per ESPN Bracketology as a 10 seed, but they are considered Kenton to be on the bubble as one of the last four buys, you know, teams that skip that first round or play-in round. Other teams that are on the bubble. Virginia Tech is in the first four out. Cal is in the next four out. And those are, I think those are all the teams that are on bubble watch right now. How do you feel about the ACC's we head towards ACC tournament and NCAA tournament?
at time. Doubling up on the amount of teams that we had in the tournament last year,
as well as looking at a situation where virtually half the conference is making it,
that's darn good ball. That's big time. That's really big time stuff.
You know, credit to all these teams for hiring the right coaches, for going out in the
portal and doing great things, for doing everything that is led up to this moment where we're
saying, all in all, even the teams that are on slumps, even the teams that are performing well,
all of you are going to get into the tournament, this was not some act of randomness.
This was not some, you know, all variance happens from year to year and all of a sudden.
No, this was very intentional.
A lot of teams that were not very good last year got good this year because the athletic
directors went out and did the right things.
And the head coaches then went out to do the right things as well.
So much credit to these gentlemen because they've all done a fantastic job.
Much credit to them.
I can't see a world where you could look at the ACC and what they've done this year
and say, this is a disappointment for the conference in terms of basketball,
the same way you could a couple years ago.
Yeah, not to mention, you know, Duke is likely the number one overall seed.
They have all but clinched that.
And, you know, obviously they're the team that gives the ACC the best chance of winning
a national championship this year.
But if you're thinking about other teams that could make a run, Kenton,
I would certainly not rule out Virginia, and I wouldn't rule out North Carolina either with the way they're playing.
I'd love to throw some love to Miami, but I think we're maybe a year too early on that because they don't have enough consistent three-point shooting, perimeter defense, or free-throw shooting, but their front court play, they're rebounding, their takeaways in terms of forcing turnovers has been outstanding.
I just don't know if they have a complete enough roster to win a championship, but I think,
in the right bracket Virginia and North Carolina could possibly threaten.
You know, both of those teams have excellent front courts, not good, not decent, excellent
front courts.
The problem is both of those teams have bad courts that are questionable at best, at some things
that are very important.
Like you said, the ability to shoot the ball, the ability to create off the dribble, the ability
to kind of stir the drink offensively.
Don't get me wrong.
You're looking at Wilson.
You're looking at Bassel.
you're looking at all of the prolific scores in Miami's front court.
You say to yourself, these guys are enough to get you to the dance.
But once it's actually time to do that waltz in March,
you've got to have some guys that can hit those big time shots.
And it becomes a question for both of these teams, quite honestly,
which leaves you kind of scratch your head saying,
can they make a run?
And the interesting thing is,
when you look at a lot of teams that have made runs in March,
it was because their guards played above their heads.
Their guards played above what they were playing like all season.
And if you do the math and you do the equation there,
that would mean that UNC and Miami are actually in better shape than most teams to make a run.
Because there's a world where NC State's back court goes off and they still lose a game
because of how overwhelmed our front court can be by front courts that have a lot of length
and can do rebounding at a high level, right?
You combine the way that UNC has been on the boards.
combine the way that Miami has been on the board.
You combine the way that both of those teams attack downhill.
And then you add that in to all of a sudden your guards figuring out how to shoot 35 plus percent from deep for just a four game stretch.
And all of a sudden you go, well, round of 64, round of 32, sweet 16, elite eight.
Huh.
Did I just make a final four run?
Just because our guards had four good games in a row.
That's true.
We see that happen a lot.
I mean, honestly, that's what makes the NCAA tournament the best playoff format in sports, right?
Because you take a sport like that where you just get hot for a few games from the perimeter,
and you can beat anybody when you go crazy shooting threes, and you have one game elimination rather than, you know, in the NBA, it's seven game series.
It's not, it's just March Madness is so freaking.
magical for that reason. You get some guards that go on a four or five game heater. And like you said, suddenly
you're in the final four, you're in the national championship. So we'll certainly be covering all this
heading into and through the ACC tournament and then the big dance coming up. Make sure you check out
