Episode Date: September 4, 2024Georgia Tech and Boston College have both claimed early-season signature victories over the Florida State Seminoles. Which of these teams should be seen as the bigger dark horse candidate to win the A...CC this season? Or did both teams simply benefit from the Seminoles being completely discombobulated and overhyped to start the season?Hosts Alex Donno and Kenton Gibbs make the cases for the Eagles and Yellow Jackets. Donno wonders if BC might be able to go on a run strictly based on how easy their conference schedule is. Bill O’Brien’s team only has one ranked conference opponent (Louisville) remaining on their schedule. The guys discuss the biggest overreactions to start the year. Is Miami really as good as they looked in their opening win against Florida? Did Clemson and Virginia Tech embarrass the conference with their week one performances? Will any of the players who grabbed ACC Player of the Week honors repeat in week two. The guys make the case for NC State receiver Kevin Concepcion. For your next listen, check out the Locked On College Football podcast! He is Kenton Gibbs from Lockdown Wolfpack.
I am Alex Dono from Lockdown Canes.
Now, Kenton, I have not watched professional wrestling in about 24 years.
I think the year 2000 is when I,
I checked out.
But if I try to give you a pro wrestling analogy for what the Florida State Seminoles are this year,
will you bear with me on this?
Absolutely.
I'm right here with you.
Tell me what you got, Don.
All right.
So I think about when Rick Flair, the nature boy, one of the greatest of all time.
But when the nature boy Rick Flare was late in his career, he used to just go out and lose big matches.
Like any time you had the nature boy booked in a big match, he's going up against Hulk Hogan
in the WCW or Sting or the macho man Randy Savage.
You know, he had this great illustrious history 13 time or 15 time champion of the world,
but he would always late in his career, he would lose these big grueling matches to put the
opponent over.
The opponent could make the name off of beating Rick Flair.
And so Kenton, I think you see where I'm getting at.
Two weeks into the season, Florida State Seminoles, they are late career nature boy Rick
Flair because even though I think we can.
all agree, they've looked bad to start the season, yet Georgia Tech has gotten a big bump.
They're ranked now, 23rd in the country. Like Georgia Tech got a big burst by beating Florida
State week one. Boston College is now being talked about for going into Doke Campbell Stadium
and beating Florida State in week two. So it's like that Rick Flair effect, Florida State. They may
not be good this year. They're over under has dropped to five and a half games now after these first
two performances, but still, Georgia Tech Boston College, they've gotten now, they've gotten a bump.
They've been put over by beating Florida State.
Dono, I hear you, and I feel you knocking, much like you're talking about late stage Rick Flair.
There was an even later stage Rick Flair where he was like one foot in retirement, one foot
in wrestling every other year or so.
I stopped watching by that point.
Absolutely.
And that version of Rick Flair couldn't put him.
mattress over. And that's no disrespect to Rick Flair. It's just that he's been doing it for 40-some
idea. So I say that to say, football ain't scripted, at least not to my night. Not to my now.
I never received the script when I was at NC State said, hey, there's the games you need to win.
There's the games you need to lose. So I say that to say, the reality of what we are facing
is simple. The ability to put people over with Florida State is gone. If Florida State's
win total drop to five and a half, what does that mean?
People see five, maybe six games from the rest of the schedule they can win.
So, Dono, if they have 10 and they're predicted to win five, maybe a six, that means that
at least half of those games, people are expecting them to lose.
Yeah.
You can't put anybody over with that.
You're looking at both of these games.
double-digit favorites in both.
Neither one of these games did they come in
a single-digit favorite.
It was neither of these games.
People looked at them and said,
hmm, Georgia Tech's got something.
They're going to be really physical this year.
You know, Brent Keyes, the former offensive lineman,
they're going to be physical.
You're going to be a six-point favorite in Dublin.
No, it was, what, 13 and a half or something along those lines?
Yeah, yeah, it opened at 13 and a half.
Boston College.
16 and a half against Boston College.
Boston College, people said we would give you 13.5, but it's not a neutral site.
And we don't have to worry about Florida State being jet lag.
So we know without the jet lag factor, Florida State's going to take off like a rocket.
They're going to launch it.
It's going to be a tough time.
Somehow the double-digit favorite thing didn't work out.
I would be surprised to see Florida State is a double-digit favorite beyond games against FCS or group of five teams for the rest of the year.
And with that being said, you can't get put over by winning a game against a team that you were a 4.0000 against.
That's just not how this works.
I would assume that they're favored against Memphis, even though I know there's some concern about whether or not they win their next game.
But okay, so how seriously do you take now Georgia Tech and Boston College as Dark Horse ACC contenders?
Like, does the fact that Florida State got outmuscled by both of them?
Does that kind of cancel out those victories and say, well, the same?
similar to not who we thought they were?
I will say, Kenton, I can make a case for Boston College just based on them
already getting past this Florida State game because I look at, and Georgia Tech may be a
better football team than Boston College, but Boston College has a much easier schedule
the rest of the way, Kenton.
They don't play Miami or Clemson this year.
In fact, for their conference schedule, the only ranked opponent that they have left is a home
game against 22nd rank Louisville. Outside of that, their conference schedule is at Virginia,
at Virginia Tech. That will be a tough one, even though Virginia Tech did, you know, lose to Vanderbilt.
That'll be a tough game. Home against Syracuse at SMU, home against North Carolina,
home against Pittsburgh. I contrast that with the Georgia Tech schedule. Georgia Tech has got
three ranked ACC opponents the rest of the way, plus at home against number five Notre Dame.
that doesn't count for the conference schedule, but Georgia Tech has to play Louisville on the road.
They've got to play home against number 12 Miami and home against number 24 NC State.
So just based on the schedules alone, I could say maybe Boston College could sneak in there.
Yeah, absolutely.
Until you remember who their head coach is.
I know that many people have been giving me crap about this ever since the game.
Oh, look, Bill O'Brien and first game.
Listen, I objectively look at this.
and I say, I'm not
being this team because
Boston College people. That's not why
I'm deeming Florida State. That's not why I'm saying
you no longer
have the ability to propel me
into believing teams are better than they are.
You just have the ability to prove how bad you are.
I'm not saying that because
this is Boston College.
Because anybody who knows me knows
that I've been on the Brink Key train
for some time believing like, oh yeah,
he's going to get it right down there.
He's going to do something special in Lemp.
So I very much so looking for the state that's like, you can just show us how bad you are.
However, the reality is this.
I don't believe in Boston College at all still to this moment.
I still don't.
I still.
And again, love me some Castambo.
I think he's a star.
I think he's a star.
I specifically said in our preseason talks.
He's not a star in the making.
He's a star that's here.
But with that being said, I don't think that.
even with a much more pliable schedule, I don't think that Boston College in year one with Bill O'Brien can find a way to completely do virtually a 180 from last year.
I don't think that that's in the cards for this team.
And don't get me wrong, I get it.
You're talking about a six-win team, right?
You're talking about a team that was middle of the road, not the worst team in the world.
Sure, but I struggle to see them drastically improving over a Georgia Tech team that had so much.
continuity from last year to this year. And on top of the continuity, good continuity. You have all of
these guys coming back that have that game one aside, right? We have not seen them play in the other
football this year, sure. But the ball that we saw them play last year, Georgia Tech allowed the most
rush the rest of yards in the conference. They also rushed for the most yards in the conference.
That team, and that's last year now. That's not this year. That team has an identity offensively,
and they have a quarterback that can fling it around the yard like crazy.
And again, I wouldn't even say there's a huge edge between Castiano's and King.
But where I do believe the advantage is everywhere else.
I believe everywhere else there's a very clear distinction between Georgia Tech and Boston College to where I'm like,
I'm more comfortable with Georgia Tech than Boston College.
Yeah, no, I'm with you on that.
And Boston College, they were, most of the preseason predictions had
them like in the teens as to where they're going to finish in the ACC this year, whereas Georgia
Tech was usually in that top eight, top 10 at worst. Still to come on this episode of Locked on
ACC, we're going to talk about which players had outstanding performances in week one,
took home conference player the week honors and how many of them could repeat this coming week,
which new phases we might see. And I also, I want to get Kenton's take on maybe what the biggest
overreactions or knee-jerk reactions might be based on the first week of the season in the
ACC. So you want to keep it locked right here, my friends. We're only getting started on this

And make sure you check out the other shows that Kenton and I do.
He does a great job co-hosting Locked on Wolfpack talking everything NC State.
I host Locked on Keynes talking everything Miami.
We both of us, I think, have had a lot of fun to start the season.
Sometimes at Florida State's expense, if we did have any Florida State fans that still
watch the show last week, I think they've mostly jumped ship by now.
But you start your season, oh and two, the way that you have you, you earn some of that, man.
And so, okay, like, Kenton, do you feel like there are any big time overreactions to the way the season has started?
Because I mentioned, like, maybe you felt a certain way about Georgia Tech beating Florida State.
But then when Boston College the following week was actually able to do it even better and do it in Tallahassee, maybe you're like, well, Florida State's the common denominator now.
Are we overreacting to how bad Florida State is?
Are we overreacting to how good Miami is after a week one win in Gainesville?
like what would you say are the overreactions?
Yes.
Yes.
We are absolutely overreacting to Miami.
That Florida team is a rudderless ship.
They're a talentless rudderless ship.
That team in Florida, that Gainesville team, I am telling you right now, I would be shocked.
And when I say shock, I mean legitimately surprised if this team gets to six wins.
With that schedule, yeah.
If that Florida team makes a bowl game, if they make a bow game,
I'm not saying they win the bowl game, dominate the bowl.
If they even go, I would be shocked and surprised.
And I said Miami would win the game.
I thought Florida would be a little more competitive.
I thought Florida would make it somewhat of a game.
I'm not ready to crown Miami as the conference champions yet.
Now, can Miami show me throughout the season?
Yeah, we're the definitive number one.
everybody's on our block. We're the big dogs. Y'all are the puppies. That's what this is. Definitely
possible. Not going to sit here and tell you it's impossible. I'm not going to say that. But what I know,
not what I think. What I know is there is not a world in which I am looking at Miami now
and saying nobody compares to you because everybody had a rough week one and you had a really good week.
I will say this. Yes, we saw multiple teams in the ACC struggle against.
lesser opponents and Miami did not. Hey, I'm wholeheartedly with you there. Do you know that there's like going
around on the Florida message boards and Donald's normally the message board guy, not me.
They have like documented the players that were whiffing, the players that were loafing and they
have it like documented in 4K. What is this angle? Where is this guy going? What is he doing? And I'm like,
my God, I thought it was going to be like maybe four or five.
If you get four or five loaves, that's a lack of intentional effort.
That's what a loaf is in essence.
You're just kind of out there just a whole hump.
If you get four or five of those in the game, it's like, all right, it's not good,
but like that's generally about that.
There was a running thread, and I believe I stopped looking at about 15.
Yeah, I said, what?
I could see that thread.
What is this?
What are you?
So, don't get me.
wrong. I'm not saying Miami is a bad team. I'm not saying I feel bad about Miami. I feel better about
Miami out of game one. But I'm not ready to crom. I'm not ready to say the ACCC is over. It's
Miami's and everybody else is just kind of competing for second. I'm not there. Well, yeah,
and listen, a big part of what you're saying there is fair. Like I will not, and obviously I went to
Miami, I cover Miami, but I get it. They've got to prove it. Like that wasn't even a conference win.
Like when we're talking about possibly winning the ACC for the first time,
they still have eight conference games on the schedule.
They got a long way to go, long way to go.
At the same time, and I don't think you're really doing this because I think you were
objectively, you know, trying to break down what you saw in the game.
But I think part of this narrative now all of a sudden, well, Florida is just so bad.
I think part of that, its revision is history because heading into that game,
I kept hearing about, and also, by the way, Gator beatwriters and Seminole beatwriters,
you all have to put the Kool-Aid down because we rely on these reporters to give us honest
assessments of how these teams are doing in the off-season.
And there were a lot of lies that were told.
But heading into the game, I kept hearing on the Florida side, don't, don't worry,
they're really improved this year.
You know, Graham Mertz's second year starter.
He's going to be even better than he was last year in that system and even more talent
at wide receipt.
I kept hearing this stuff.
but then all of a sudden Florida gets crushed
and now it's like, oh, well, we sucked the whole time
is what the Florida people are saying.
There's a little revisionist history in there.
And also, you know, Cam Ward's performance,
maybe Florida made it a little easier on him with the lack of pressure,
but that was surgical what he did out there.
So more or less, I'm with you on the idea that, you know,
Miami still has a lot to prove.
I get that.
But at the same time, I see this narrative out there
that all of a sudden Florida is not a quality win
because guess what?
we were terrible the whole time. That's not what I heard heading into the game.
Heading into the game, I heard how hard it's going to be to win in the swamp.
That wasn't hard. That was easy.
Right, right. And let me not be one of those people to say Florida was terrible all the longer.
And I knew they were terrible. Again, I thought this was going to be a close game.
I said, I don't trust either coach, but I trust a better quarterback. And that's Cam Ward.
Boy, Florida looked so veggless, so useless. So, I mean, that was as inept of a team that I saw
from the entire Power 5 this last weekend.
I mean, and I watched a ton of football.
I promise you, I was hanging out with some amazing folks,
and I'm sitting there on my phone.
Okay, what's going on here?
What's going on?
I did not see one team that looked, again, a Power 4 team now,
Power 4 that looked as bad as Florida.
Now, with that in mind, Miami helped them look bad.
With that in mind, Miami helped them look bad.
Cam Ward was good.
Cam Ward was, he looked like,
everything he was advertised to be.
And I'll tell you, I don't think it's an overreaction to say Miami May coming out of the first week.
They look like they have the best roster in the ACC.
I don't think that's an overreaction.
But again, our questions for Miami this year are not different from our questions about Miami last year, at least for me personally.
I overrated TVD last year.
I can admit that.
I can admit I was wrong.
So my question about them last year wasn't, hmm, are they okay at quarterback?
back. My question was team chemistry and can they go out with the right attitude because they had
five guys that were predicted in different mock drafts to go in the first round last year.
That was the thought. It was, oh man, all this talent all over the place. We got two first
round safety. We got a first round to bend the tackle. We got a first round left tackle. We got all
these guys that go in the first round. And I'm like, okay, great. I know the talent's there.
Where are they going to do throughout the entire season? The same thing remains a question for Miami.
but they've answered game one.
Resoundingly, they have shown that the talent is all there.
But again, I'm not ready to crown them.
And I'll tell you a slightly less, slightly less popular overreaction
that I've been seeing going around week one.
Or I guess underreaction, rather.
Dambo's going to write the ship.
This team is going to be okay.
I am telling you right now, I have seen multiple teams get broken in moments like this.
When you're at a crossroads as a program,
you do not take a game like this
and you do not have a moment like this
where you get embarrassed on national TV.
What do you think that does in recruiting?
Oh, well, we know,
everybody knows we're not going to recruit over it.
They also know you're 30 points worse than contenders.
They know that now.
So I think that people are not pressing the red button
on dabble enough for my liking.
Because, damn, and I'm slamming it.
I'm slamming that thing.
emergency, circle all the,
Carl Sordine, get all the power ranges
together. We're having a tough time
in Clemson. By the way,
on a related note,
am I overreacting
as someone who, you know, covers
this conference, that
I'm a little bit embarrassed
as someone who covers the ACC
because, you know, we like to say, hey, the
ACC's not as bad, not as far
away from the SEC as you guys
like to say they are, whereas, and Clemson's
a big part of this, because Clemson, at the
time that they entered that stadium, the Mercedes-Benz, whatever in Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech,
they were the odds-on favorites at that time to win the ACC, going up against the odds-on favorites to
win the SEC, and they were 30 points and country miles worse than that favorite in the SEC.
And then also part of that embarrassment was Virginia Tech, they go into Vanderbilt as two touchdown
favorites, and they play the way that they did.
So, and listen, I know, again, you know, Miami beat an SEC team in Florida, but people are suddenly not giving them credit for that because Florida was terrible all along now.
But, you know, in terms of Clemson against Georgia to think that the ACC favorite was that much worse than the FCC favorite and that a Virginia Tech team that is in most people's top seven, if not or were in most people's top seven or top five in the ACC was worse than the worst team in the SEC.
Am I overreacted to be embarrassed by that?
not really, but also, Donno, you and I both know that our job is not that different from a banker, from accountant, from lawyer, from firefighter, from whatever.
There are good ones and bad ones in every profession.
And how good or bad you are does not determine how high you rise in the ranks of the media, because you and I both know some folks that we're just like, huh, interesting to see that they have that platform, but okay.
With that being said, did you and I not warn everybody Clemson was fraudulent before the season?
Did you and I not say, hey, that team in South Carolina, I'm not, where are you getting this certainty that they're going to be a top team from?
Where are we getting this from?
The defense will defense as it should defend, but everything else about that team is suspect at best.
And lo and behold, because they carry the orange.
helmets with the white paws on them.
Everybody ignored all the red flags.
They ignored Davo saying that
Garrett Riley came in to run my office.
They ignored K. Clubnick,
making some of the worst
QB decision making I have ever
seen in pivotal moments.
So, again, I
struggle. And Donald, please tell
me if you remember anything this bad.
A quarterback making two decisions
as poor as throwing a
bubble screen on
what was it, third and one
when your back is averaging seven yards per carry
or creating a read option on a play that was actually inside zone
with no read on it in Miami.
I have never heard of a quarterback having two decisions that bad
that is allegedly supposed to get it together
and become a top quarterback the next year.
I've never seen it.
Not once.
Have I seen that from a guy who I can understand
if it was his first year ever starting?
If that was his first game starting against Florida State,
and it's like, oh, he made a mistake.
He's a freshman.
That young man showed us who he is,
and a lot of folks in the national media didn't believe him
because they believed in doubt.
They believed that he was going to get it together,
and I told you, and Donald told you what it was with them.
So I don't want to hear nothing about that.
Now, Vanderbilt beating Virginia Tech,
that one was legitimately embarrassing.
Struggling against Ohio, Syracuse,
that was embarrassing.
Struggling against Western, having Western Carolina ever in that quarter leading you in C-State?
That was embarrassing.
That was absolutely embarrassing.
But at the end of the day, I struggle to say that the ACC as a whole is embarrassing because the national media perception is so anti-ACC.
It's like that meme that says flirting when the attractive guy is like, hey, that dress looks amazing on you.
you. And then when the heavyset guy says, hey, that just looks amazing on you, it says harassment.
It's very much so the same situation here because how people are now saying, well, Florida State is bad,
therefore your conference is bad. Donno, last time I checked, they lost two ACC teams, correct?
Exactly. And that's why I didn't include them in the embarrassment. As embarrassing as they are,
that's why I didn't include them in my scenario.
Okay. So, you know, we looked around and saw other teams from other conferences, looked at,
oh, you know, all of these teams
struggled with lesser opponents.
Well, we didn't have the number three or four
team in the nation struggling with the Idaho vandals.
Good point.
What?
What?
Derrickuse ain't supposed to be a top team.
They're a wild card.
Nobody knows what they're going to be.
NC State was not picked to be the winner of this conference
by many folks outside of this guy here.
They weren't picked to be the winner of the conference
by everybody.
And so we're getting on these teams.
teams, but oh, Oregon, you know, it just kind of happens that way sometimes.
They're just the cutesy-oose little guys.
Michigan struggling against Fresno State.
Same thing.
Oh, yeah.
Same thing.
So their top dogs struggling against these middle of nowhere state teams,
with all due respect to Fresno and Idaho vandals,
I don't care nothing about what they're doing out there in the land of potatoes.
I don't care.
So it's amazing to me that when the ACC struggles like that,
And the fact that we had, what was his name,
fine bomb on to talk about the ACC struggle.
Was Taylor Tanner-Tanbaum not available?
West Durham?
What, E.J. Manuel.
McLean.
Are these people not available in that ESPN's disposal anymore?
Are they no longer Disney employees?
What is fine, bomb doing talking ACC?
But that's the world that we live in,
and that's why I say,
while there is a sentiment of embarrassment nationally,
nothing the ACC could have done except have a clean sweep
would have convinced people, oh, the ACC is for it.
Well, coming up next, some players who did not embarrass the conference.
We'll talk about the players of the week
and which of them could repeat coming up in week two.
You want to keep it locked right here.
We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC.

Thanks for making Locked on ACC, your first listen and your first watch today. All right, so I've got
ACC players of the week, Kenton, big honors for week one in the conference. You had
a quarterback of the week, Cam Ward with his 385 passing yards for Miami, three touchdowns,
one interception in that 41 to 17 win at Florida. Now, Kenton, I don't think Ward
is going to repeat this week because Miami's playing Florida A&M.
And unless there's a debacle, I don't expect Ward to play for very long this coming
week.
So I do not think we will see him as ACC quarterback of the week for at least a couple of more this
week.
But that was a very good performance against Florida.
Yeah, absolutely.
He put on a hell of a performance against Florida, but he should not play long at all in
this upcoming game.
You know, this is the reality that we're looking at with Cam Ward is he,
is every bit as good as advertised. But again, I'd be surprised if he plays long enough to garner
the type of stats that need to be garnered to be the player of the week. So, you know, hell of a job,
Cam. Way to put the conference on your back in week one and show out against Florida. Way to make them
look like one of the worst teams in the nation, because that's objectively how they look until DJ
Lagway got the game at least. But by then, everybody had gone home. The popcorn had gone stale.
Nobody was in the swamp anymore. The swamp got very clean. They did a swamp cleanup.
for whatever reason. More power to them. But shout out to Cam Ward, a digit thing. I don't expect
him to repeat this week at least. Right. Let me go through the rest of these with their stats and then
you can tell me who else might repeat. So Boston College, running back Trayshon Ward, running back of the
week, 12 carries 77 yards, three catches for 61 yards and a touchdown in BC's 2813 win at
Florida State. UNC defensive lineman Javari Ritzie, six tackles three sacks in that 19,
17 win at Minnesota. Miami defensive back Jaden Harris, seven tackles, a sack and an interception
in the 4117 win at Florida. ACCC rookie of the week was Pitt freshman quarterback Eli Holstein,
who ended up beating out Nate Yarnel for that starting job. The Alabama transfer had 333
passing yards, three touchdowns, one interception in a 55 to 24 win against Kent State. Receiver
of the week where he might repeat for a lot of weeks this year.
Him and Xavier Restrepo might go back and forth.
That's Casey Concepcion with NC State.
Nine catches, 121 yards and three touchdowns in the 3821 win against Western.
Offensive linemen of the week, Miami's Zach Carpenter starting center.
No sacks given up.
He had a team high 84.7 pass blocking grade according to pro football focus.
Linebacker of the week, Marlow Wax from Syracuse, who's going to miss some time now.
He got hurt.
a sack and a force fumble in the 3822 win over Ohio and specialist of the week.
A lot of field goals in that UNC win over Minnesota.
UNC kicker Noah Burnett, four for four on field goals with a long of 52 in that 19 to 17
win.
So who do you think in that group could repeat this week?
Well, you know, there's a receiver playing in a very big game coming up here.
That's against Tennessee.
Against the Tennessee team that that's secondary is, you know, I hate.
these guys. I hate them with a passion, not
Tennessee. That's the Green Bay Packers.
I hate them. But that defense resembles
a lot of those cheeseheads because it's
holes running all through it. And that
secondary, that secondary has been much maligned
and rightfully so for a fight sometime
because they have constantly struggled
to keep up with anybody, let alone
guys who are going to be playing on Sundays.
So if NC State can do
a decent job of keeping
Grayson McCall vertical, I expect
for Kevin Concepcion to get
off, to get his, and his home. And his
hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.
He's going to do what he needs to do in front of family, in front of friends,
to at least keep this game close, or he'll do his best to do so.
And let alone, if NC State wins, in the words of one NBA young boy is going to be a parade
inside his city, yeah, because he's going to be having a ball in the Bank of America
end zone.
Yeah, I think honestly, going through that list and, like, you know, Marlow Axe won't even
be playing this week.
So I think, I think Kevin Concepcion probably the most likely to repeat, because
is, you know, and Miami has three guys on that list.
But again, against Florida A&M this week, you expect,
you expect a lot of, a lot of second and third stringers to like the end.
Now, wait a minute, wait a minute.
Is it fam, you or do we call them the best team in Tallahassee now?
What's their new thing?
They are there.
I'll tell the way you're doing.
There's an undefeited team in Tallahassee.
It's the ralas.
It's the ralus, baby.
That's all I know.
That's all I know.
1,000%.
Well, I want to thank everyone for tuning in.
