Starting point is 00:00:00 Maybe Kenton could, but I couldn't have possibly imagined Bill Belichick's debut going any worse than it did. We're part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. your team every day. Today's episode is brought to you by Fandual. Football season is here.
Starting point is 00:00:41 Visit the Fandual app today and start planning your futures bets right now. He is Kenton Gibbs, former NC State defensive lineman and co-host of Lockdown Wolfpack. I am Alex Dono, host of Lockdown Keynes. On this episode, we'll talk about the new AP top 25. MyCC teams moved up. ACC team moved down. We'll break it all down. We'll talk about the ACC players. of the week after a very eventful week one. Now, Kenton, I mentioned I could not have imagined a debut that bad. Maybe you could have. So Bill Belichick, first game in charge, North Carolina,
Starting point is 00:01:20 really made me wonder why he even came out of retirement in the first place. The Tar Heels had a flawless opening drive. And then he should have just said Belichick, stop the count. We're done. It's not the rest of the game. They go on to lose 48 to 14 in a game where they obviously struggled to move the football, to hold on to the football. They struggled to tackle.
Starting point is 00:01:46 And okay, Kenton, let me start here. So I know that it's just the first game. And this is a team that has 70 new players from last year, like overturn the entire roster of the transfer portal. So I can give them a certain amount of grace despite the 48 to 14 loss. But where this starts for me is this program spent the entire offseason since Belichick and GM Michael Lombardi were hired. They spent the entire off season referring to North Carolina Tar Heels football as the 33rd NFL team. Absolute joke.
Starting point is 00:02:23 And I never want to hear that slogan coming out of Carolina again until they earn it. I don't want to hear from anybody until they earn it. You know, they bought all the legends. They bought all the stars out. you know, Jordan was there, Randy Moss was there, Lawrence Taylor was there. Lawrence got a weird case. He'd be on the cops. Never mind.
Starting point is 00:02:40 We're not going to go there. But what I will say is they bought all the stars out, Dono. All the stars came to see him. You know, this was a week one that was star studied. But one thing I can say, I was feeling down, Donna. I was in the dogs. For those of you who can't see me who can hear my voice right now, I'm wearing a sport coat with a collared shirt because I had to dress for the occasion.
Starting point is 00:03:03 I had to dress for the again. When you have this successful of a hate watch, Dono, oh, you've got to dress. You've got to dress the part. But the thing that I want to emphasize more than anything else, I was having a terrible weekend in terms of pigs, Dono. Everybody that I picked, it was the kiss of death. If I picked your team, unless you are the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets,
Starting point is 00:03:24 it was the kiss of death, okay? And the NC State pulled one out by the hairs and they chitty, chint, chit, but everybody else, it was a kiss. And yet, my two. biggest predictions, which were all based on hype, not heart, came to be in such spectacular fashion. I told everybody, Arch Manning is nothing. He couldn't unsee the seventh rounder even when he was injured and Arch took the spot
Starting point is 00:03:47 because of injury. He still gave the spot back. We saw what he did. And then I thought, oh, it can't be. Bill Belichick cannot be worse than what we saw out of Arch. Can't be. Boy, I'll tell you what. a meg, the stallion twerk video
Starting point is 00:04:02 and got that many cheeks in it. It was terrible, Dono. It was awful. I mean, you talk about the tackling was bad. I very seriously want to know, what did North Carolina do well? What part of the game did they do well? The past catching.
Starting point is 00:04:18 When the quarterbacks actually did put it near a receiver, it was liable to bounce right out of their hands. The blocking. Those boys, let me tell you something, Donno. Me and you could have been on that defensive line and we might have got us some sacks. We might have got us. I would have looked like Ruben Bain out there.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Hey, listen, you already got the jersey on, you know what I mean? I'm going to tell you, this was an complete and utter embarrassment. But honestly, this was shocking to the level of which they were unprepared. This was shocking to the level of which they were thoroughly dominated on both. Because everybody keeps talking about, oh, he doesn't have the talent. He needs the talent. He needs the talent. You're telling me that the talent disparity between TCU and this,
Starting point is 00:05:00 I'm going to read off a list of games that were closer in terms of spread than this one. So you're telling me that the talent disparity in this game is as big as between Nevada and Penn State. Nevada lost by one more point than they did, 35 to their 34. Marshall to Georgia, again, Marshall lost by 38 to their 34. You're telling me that Michigan is closer to New Mexico, that SMU is closer to East Texas A&M Commerce than you are. Oklahoma is closer to Illinois. I think I've made my case thoroughly there.
Starting point is 00:05:46 You made your case. That in terms of talent, these FCS teams are closer to top 25 teams than UNC is the TCU. Stop it. Come on, dog. knock it all. Yeah, and like again, it's one, whether you lose 4814 or 4847, I know this only counts as one loss, but as you mentioned, how shockingly unprepared a Bill Belichick coach team looked.
Starting point is 00:06:13 And I think we have to revisit how he even got this job in the first place, because North Carolina had every opportunity to hire an actual college football coach. like there were links to like John Summerall. Like they had opportunities to hire actual college football coaches. And then when the hire of Belichick was actually made, it seemed like that came more from their board of trustees than from Bubba Cunningham, the athletic director. Like it seemed like they circumvented him in that process because they wanted to make the flashy hire.
Starting point is 00:06:48 And you think about, you know, all of the negotiations for reality TV, all of the TMZ type headlines during the off season. Like I was listening to, I guess this was between the third and fourth quarter. I don't think this was on TV, but I may have been zoned out by that point because the game was so ugly. But I was listening to the cover three podcast right after the game that they were, they're broadcasting from the stadium. And they mentioned they had this whole between the third and fourth quarter. They had this whole stadium light show and a video package.
Starting point is 00:07:23 and on the video package, it was like, you don't want to see these tar heels in the fourth court. And this was all pre-taped, obviously, airing between the third and fourth quarter when 75% of the fans had already gone home for the night because that game was so ugly. And I know you say this about North Carolina all the time, Kent, and that there's just so much goes into the flash. When it comes to football, they need to start investing in substance, not in flash and headlines. Because that's how that comes off to me after that opening game. Like you hired a guy who either is just not a college coach. It's not interested in being a college coach. I don't know why Belichick took this job,
Starting point is 00:08:02 but it doesn't seem like this program is heading in the right direction. Dono, I was terrified when I heard Somerall link to them. I was terrified because I know Summerall, wherever he goes next, he's going to terrify that. He's going to terrorize that conference for the next 10 to 15 years. I honestly and truly believe that. With that being said, I then took a deep breath. and realized it's North Carolina. What are we doing here? They're not going to do the serious thing.
Starting point is 00:08:29 You know, this is so embarrassing for so many reasons. Like you said, it's about the flash. It's about the lights and the glitz and the glamour and the light show, not about the on the field product. What purpose and sense does it make to say, oh, I'm not going to give any of my players numbers while they're going through camp because I've always wanted to do this. This is not you living out your dream. This is the time to run a football team. William, this is it. This is what you're supposed to be doing here.
Starting point is 00:09:03 I will tell you, not once during this offseason was the actual football mention at North Carolina. Not once in a meaningful way. Not once was it like, hey, this is what's going on from North Carolina camp and there are exciting things happening. And I knew from the jump, this is a guy that coming in, we already knew, is near closer to 80 than he is to 60. This is a guy that has no college coaching experience whatsoever, never a single assistant job, not a GA job, not Neri a Nathan Yards in the college game. And then last but not least, when he does get in, all we get is. scandal after scandal involving a 20-year-old.
Starting point is 00:09:50 And no, this ain't the University of Georgia, so nobody's driving. It's his girlfriend. It's his girlfriend giving this scandal. I could not, Donald, this made my heart smile, honestly and truly. I had such a rough weekend of picks up to this. You know, the big man upstairs knew that I needed something major. And this, I couldn't have imagined anything better. The most points ever allowed by a Bill Belichick coach team.
Starting point is 00:10:17 I couldn't imagine. You're losing by... Oh, go ahead, though. Go ahead. Sorry, I was going to say the real MVP in Chapel Hill was our colleague Isaac Shade, locked on Tar Heels. I watched his live post game, and he did such a good job
Starting point is 00:10:33 after such just a difficult game to watch. And so, like, you know, I wish the team had been as prepared as Isaac Shade was to go on for a live post game. Because I've been... And listen, Kenton, I'm a Miami guy. I've seen some really tough losses, right? I had to do, you know, post game after, you know,
Starting point is 00:10:52 the Georgia Tech game where they didn't take a knee. I had to do post game after Miami lost in Middle Tennessee State in 2022. So I knew what Isaac was going through, and he did a fantastic job and was super professional about it. Oh, I can't wait to see him in that Jared Carole on the squad this week. Oh, we've got some things we need to speak about. Because again, again, Donald, I'm never wrong just early. And I let everybody know, I let everybody know from the minute that hire happened, I said, as an NC state grad, I'm extremely glad that they hired them.
Starting point is 00:11:24 As an ACC guy, it saddens me that they hired them. As a guy who knows anything about football, I know that there are a billion reasons this is going to go wrong. There are a billion pass to this going wrong. And very honestly, none is going right. And people are going to say, Ken, you're overreacting. It's one game. the things that I saw in that game, there are things that are correctable problems,
Starting point is 00:11:47 and then there are problems where it's like, hey, there's no way around that. That's too hot to get over, too low to get under. You're stuck in the middle, and that's where they are. You have to start a kid with a fake leg now. Congratulations. This is, this is, you're playing major college football
Starting point is 00:12:06 with a guy who has a bionic knee in essence. Hey, more power to. you. Best of luck. I can't wait to see how the rest of their season turns out. Well, on Max Johnson, that leads to like, I want to get to a couple of actual football points on North Carolina and then we'll move on from that game because we also have a new batch of ACC, well, the first batch of ACC players of the week. Thank you for making Lockt on ACC, your first listen and your first watch. So again, 48 to 14, North Carolina got blown out by. TCU in Chapel Hill last night. If you look Kenton at the team stats, it's as ugly as the scoreboard was.
Starting point is 00:14:47 So TCU recorded 29 first downs compared to just 10 from UNC. UNC was one for 10 on third down in this game. TCU outgained the tar heels, 542 total yards to 222, 284 passing yards to 172, 258 rushing yards to 50. You know, penalties are not a big factor in this game. I guess TCU committed five for 58. UNC committed three penalties for 25 yards. And time of possession was 32 minutes, nine seconds in TCU's favor.
Starting point is 00:15:27 Turnovers. UNC turned it over three times compared to just one for TCU. So UNC was minus two in the turnover margin. I guess like, you know, one of the easy. as takes to have after that game, Kenton, like you mentioned, you know, Max Johnson, a great story that he's back playing football again. He certainly looked a lot sharper in relief than starter Gio Lopez did. And Lopez left the game injured. I don't have an update, or at least I haven't seen an update on how serious that is. But I think whether Lopez misses
Starting point is 00:16:00 time or not, they might need to turn to Max Johnson. Yeah, the, the USC staff is definitely going to play it close to the best in terms of injury update. and all that. But I think if you're talking strictly football, if you had to say, hey, the Martians have the death being pointed at Earth, say something nice about this game for UNC in terms of on the field performance, you are absolutely right. Max Johnson coming in late was that silver lining, right? He found his brother for a touchdown who, ironically enough, caught the last touchdown that he threw as well a few years ago. So, you know, this is, I mean, that's a definite that silver lining for him.
Starting point is 00:16:38 You have an experienced older guy at quarterback who you know he's not going to try to do too much, not going to try to be the star of show, not going to try to do anything. It's spectacular. He's going to stay within himself and just make the right play, be on time play and all that good stuff. The only problem is they don't have the roster for that. They don't have the roster for on time to work out for, hey, just do what you're supposed to do when you're supposed to do it at the quarterback position.
Starting point is 00:17:05 and we'll be fine because no, they won't be. They, in fact, will not be fine. You know, if this game showed me anything in terms of, again, strictly on the field performance, I cannot name a single area where I look at North Carolina and say, they're good enough to be mid-level right now. I don't look at a single area and say that. I don't look at it in their rushing attack.
Starting point is 00:17:29 I don't look at it in their passing attack. I don't look at it how they stopped right. I don't look at it how they stopped bad. Special teams wise, nothing special there either. So I'm sitting here and saying to myself, this is like the old Digver Mill quote, we can't stop the run and we can't stop the pass.
Starting point is 00:17:45 But other than that, oh, we can't run the ball and we can't pass the ball. But other than those things, we're in great shape. That's what I would say this team is right now. And the problem is you can't strip it down to the studs midseason. So it's, you know, everybody's saying, oh, this is a full rebuild or they need to go into a rebuild. No, this is the full rebuild.
Starting point is 00:18:06 You've taken 70 players out of the portal. This is a de facto rebuild. It's going to be interesting to see where they go from here. I think that, you know, a five-win season would be, that would be a great job for what we saw the last night. But moving on from that debacle after weeks zero and one, we've got our first batch of ACC players of the week as we see it there, Kenton. And I actually, I want to start with 8.4.
Starting point is 00:18:35 ACC rookie of the week, you know, got a message on X from a Cal fan. It was like, hey, like, how come you guys on Monday didn't talk about Jaron Kiave's Sagan Gapultelle, the exciting freshman quarterback? I said, I promise we will. And I think that's a good place to start Kenton because he only became the second true freshman to ever start a season opener for Cal. Jared Gough was the first back in 2013. And Sangapultelea completed 20 of 30 pass attempts for 234 yards.
Starting point is 00:19:05 yards, three touchdowns. He also added a 30 rushing yards, including a 25-yard run in that game, completed each of his first nine passes in that win against Oregon State. So that was a really, really exciting debut. And obviously, as a true freshman, he may take some lumps throughout the season, but that was a really nice win and a nice experience builder for, you know, the player who hopefully, hopefully he becomes enough of the household name. We can start calling him J.K.S. instead of saying his full name every time. You know, J.K.S. Special, special performance, man.
Starting point is 00:19:40 Special performance. I'll tell you what, that game seemed like a pick-em-to-me. And Vegas pretty much thought the same thing. Wasn't the spread like two and a half or something along those lines? It wasn't anything to where it was like a, hey, there's a definitive, clear-cut favorite here. And yet, Cal put belt to behind, behind, Jared, playing such a fantastic game. I mean, he showed up and showed out.
Starting point is 00:20:02 You talk about on time and on target and all those things, but also creating out of structure. You know with a guy with his talent level, originally committed to Oregon and went there and all that and felt like it wasn't being prioritized over the winter. And so he decided to leave. You knew with a guy like that, he has immense talent and he can do the out of structure stuff. But it was the on time things that surprised me. The anticipation. The one, two, three, boom. The get to the top of my drop.
Starting point is 00:20:31 First read, second read, boom. That to me was very surprising from a true freshman because he may be on his second school, but he has not played any college football whatsoever whatsoever in terms of real live game. So to see him play like this against a former Power 5 team as well, hats off to that young man. And I'll tell you what, he ain't the only quarterback that had himself a day in these first couple weeks. Because Haynes King, welcome to the party, brother. Welcome to the party. He was running so much.
Starting point is 00:21:04 I had to ask, is the arm hurt again? Does he not want to throw again? And it just turns out they were just that much more physical than the buffs to where they said, hey, they may be the Colorado Buffaloes, but we're the buffer team. We're the bigger, stronger team. And we're going to run all over him, spearheaded by Haynes King. So hell of a job I have. Yeah, Haynes King, who wins quarterback of the week, became just the second FBS player since 1995
Starting point is 00:21:27 to run for 140 yards, pass for 140 yards, and score three touchdowns in a season open her, joining Jalen Hertz from Oklahoma, who did it back in 2019. So he gets quarterback of the week. Isaac Brown, I'm sure it's not going to be the only time he takes these weekly honors. Louisville Star running back who rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns against Western Kentucky, or Eastern Kentucky. I knew I had my direct. I'm like, I know it's a direction somewhere against Eastern Kentucky.
Starting point is 00:22:00 Cam Ross of UVA, receiver of the week. Luke Pettibon from Florida State offensive linemen of the week. Obviously, Florida State's offensive line did a hell of a job against Alabama with the way they ran all over them. Ruben Bain Jr., who was super disruptive against Notre Dame. I mean, Bain finished with three quarterback hurries, a sack, a tackle for loss, and an interception, and a 93.5 pro football focus grade, which is absolutely elite. Kyle Lewis of Pitt, linebacker of the week, Ahmaud Moses of SMU, defensive back of the week, and Cam Ross of UVA specialists of the week.
Starting point is 00:22:39 So Kenton, I don't know if you had this on your bingo card, but Virginia, the only team with multiple players of the week in week one, just the way we drew it up, right? Well, technically, it only had one player at a week. He just claimed two different spots. He just claimed two different spots, yeah. But I will tell you this. If you would have told me, hey, Malachi Fields is going to be playing in an ACC game
Starting point is 00:23:01 to start the season or be playing an ACC team in the first game of the season. And Virginia will have a guy who ends up being the ACC player the week in two different categories. I would for sure said, did he transfer back in? What happened? Yeah. And yet, Cam Ross, who was a very different style of receiver, much more of a burner, much more of a quickness guy, a little bit of a short little water bug type of guy. he goes absolutely ballistic in this game.
Starting point is 00:23:27 And you know what? Him and Chairman Moore seem to have developed quite the relationship in what seems to be no time. Because both of those guys are transfers as of this year. Both of those guys are brand new to the program as of this year. Both of them are, you know, old as dirt playing in their fifth or six years respectively and all that good stuff. But both of those guys came together and did something special in game one,
Starting point is 00:23:49 which should have the folks in Riley worried with them coming through, even though it's a non-conference game against NC State coming up this week. Yeah, so for Cam Ross at UVA, caught seven passes for 124 yards and a touchdown. And the win against Coastal Carolina also had a hundred yard kickoff return for a touchdown, which is tied for the longest in Virginia program history. So that's why he takes home receiver and specialist honors. Meanwhile, it's a new AP top 25. A couple of prominent ACC programs are moving on up.
Starting point is 00:24:19 One team did drop, but maybe not as far as you think. You want to keep it locked right here. We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Lockdowne ACC. We're only getting started with FanDuel. The NFL season is almost here. College obviously is very much here. And FanDuel is making sure you're ready for kickoff this weekend with a can't miss offer. Starting point is 00:26:07 Thank you so much for making Lockdown ACCC your first list. Make sure you also check out Kenton Gibbs and Grace and Boone on Locked on Wolfpack talking all things NC State. Check me out on Locked on Cains talking all things Miami. So speaking of Miami, Kenton, they are now the ACC's highest ranked team after the 2724 home victory against Notre Dame. Miami moves up in the AP poll from number 10 up to number five. Clemson only fell four spots. I mean, they did lose to a top 10 team. I think LSU, what were they, number nine when they faced Clemson, Clemson at number four.
Starting point is 00:26:48 but Clemson dropped down to number eight. So they're still in the top 10. And Florida State, of course, moved not only into the top 25, but into the top 15 after their dominant upset at home against Alabama. So the Seminoles come in at number 14, SMU. All they did was win, but they moved down a spot to number 17. And I believe that's it for the ACC. Probably the next team that would be knocking on the door would be Louisville, who received
Starting point is 00:27:18 59 votes, but they are unranked. So that's what we're looking at. You agree with those rankings. Anybody, you think Miami's too high? Clem, but I think Miami's just right. I'll take it in the top five for the record. Did Clemson fall far enough? Did FSU rise high enough?
Starting point is 00:27:34 I think all of those things are correct. And I would want to say anybody who says SMU gets moved backwards for winning a game, that's not fair. You had to watch that game. They were thoroughly unimpressive. And it's sad. I didn't see. I'll admit I didn't see their game.
Starting point is 00:27:50 That's the thing. It was a game in which here's the thing. They weren't the only team, though. That's the only argument I can get from SMU in terms of we shouldn't have moved back despite, you know, having our struggles against East Texas A&M. The only argument I can see is other teams struggled against the similar levels of opponents and they didn't get moved back.
Starting point is 00:28:12 So it's not fair for SMU to get moved back. But if we're going by merit of who, who did you play and how did you play? That's a team that you should have handled easily. And that just wasn't the case. It just was not the case that that was a game where we looked up and said, oh yeah, SMU's got this thing put away by the middle of the court. That was not the case.
Starting point is 00:28:34 Again, that's no disrespect to SMU. Anybody who knows me knows. Love me some SMU. Love those boys down. And the biggest thing about SMU, they will have multiple chances to improve upon that game coming up. again, this is not to knock them. This is not to say, oh, they're terrible now. They're a bad team.
Starting point is 00:28:53 Now, I'm not saying that in any way. I do expect them to perform better against Baylor. I do expect them to have a hell of a game against TCU in a couple weeks. I'm not saying they're a bad team. I don't want anybody to hear that. All I'm saying is there were moments where it did leave you wanting a bit more, but that can be said for a lot of teams in week one. So I get both sides of the argument there in terms of the,
Starting point is 00:29:17 them deciding to not be back or be moved back a spot. And more importantly, Louisville not being in as a travesty. That's a, that's an actual thing. Yeah. Well, I'm glad you gave me that context because I didn't see SMU's game. All I saw was the score. And 42 to 13, like it looks like they took care of business. So I appreciate the context on that one.
Starting point is 00:29:37 And I always appreciate Kenton Gibbs. And that's why you should follow him at TGIF underscore Kenton and check him out on Locked on Wolfpack.
