Malachi Tony, Isaac Brown, Duce Robinson, just some of the most exciting players in the conference, but there's a few other blockbusters.
You are Locked on ACC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
He is Kenton Gibbs from Locked on Wolfpack.
I am Alex Dono from Locked on Cains, and on this episode of Locked on ACC, the entire Friday night.
night slate. The ACC wants to take over Friday nights. We'll tell you every game happening on a
Friday this year, there's some good and there's some real bad. Our Friday night football even
worth it. I want to get into that. We'll predict who's going to be the ACC football MVP this year.
It's been very quarterback heavy for the last six or seven years. Is it going to be another QB this year?
Or maybe somebody like Isaac Brown at running back crash that party. But, you know, Kenton, I wanted to get into.
which players in the ACC are must see TV?
Because, you know, the SEC has their whole.
It just means more a thing going on.
And, you know, the Big Ten has had a monopoly on national championships for the last few years.
Can the ACC put butts in the seats and eyes on the television with some of the most exciting players in the country?
I mentioned a few off the top.
You know, Malachi Tony at Miami, one of the more exciting players I've ever covered at the U.
He's must see TV.
Isaac Brown at Louisville.
I'm a fan of his.
You're an even bigger fan of his Kenton.
And if I'm looking at somebody on, you know, Florida States roster,
I know there's not a whole lot of excitement for that program this year.
But Deuce Robinson is someone who can make opposing DBs look foolish.
I mean, he not only makes him look foolish.
He makes him look small.
He makes him look little.
They look like tiny little guys standing next to him.
and he just goes up and controls his body so well at the catch point.
It's kind of ridiculous, man.
All three of those guys, as you just mentioned,
they have what I like to refer to as a superpower, right?
Most people don't understand this.
You don't understand if you're the average person how far away athletically you are from a Division I,
an ACC athlete.
But now these guys make those guys look bad.
Deuce Robinson makes defensive backs not only look little,
he just makes them look like they're not great athletes when they try to jump with him.
Isaac Brown, he makes guys look slow.
It looks like everybody's running in mud,
but him when he hits that last gear and it's just like,
all right, see you later, man.
Go ahead, bang your head on the goalpost, brother.
And Malachi told me, the ability to change directions without decelerating is freakish.
when he runs his routes,
he doesn't do all of the exaggerated chest up,
about to come down and all that.
And that's one of the intricacies of good wide receiver play
that most people don't know.
It's the ability to run your routes
as if you're just running.
It doesn't look like he's being super intentional about,
hey, I'm going to stop right here and now I'm going back.
It just looks like he's just like, hey, I'm here now,
but I want to be about three yards that way and facing that way.
Don't look over here.
Don't look at what I'm doing.
I'll be going in just a second.
So all three of those guys, you know, and that's just to talk about what he does before he has a ball in his head and turned the Malac I told him.
But there's plenty of exciting guys in the ACC.
There's plenty of must-see TV.
I'm just, I'm disappointed because we don't have as many big names defensively as we did last year, you know.
We don't have the same star power in terms of defense.
Last year, if you were talking Pitt, who's the most exciting player, it would either be Desmond Reed or Kyle Lewis, one of the sharks.
You know, you got to go.
If you were talking who Miami's most excited player was coming into the season, come on now.
There was only one answer.
Ruben Bay.
Ruben Hurricane Bain, baby.
That was the only answer.
Now we don't have that same level of excitement about the defense.
Is there any, maybe Sammy Brown linebacker at Clemson, is he one you would say that that may be the most exciting player on his team?
I think that's a team where you probably give it to a defensive guy.
Oh, absolutely.
Absolutely.
And here's the thing.
I do agree that it's a defensive guy.
I just don't think it's Sammy Brown.
I think it's Will.
Oh.
For the for the Clim of Tigers.
I think Will.
He's phenomenal.
Dude.
He is.
And the thing about Will Help that I like so much is he can play the run and the
pads.
Normally in college you get guys that are specialists.
They do one or the other.
You get guys that are really good of anchoring down and stopping the run.
You get guys that are really great at rush to passers.
You rarely get a combination of both and Will Help is that.
He can anchor down against the run like nobody's business set a very hard edge.
But when you let him go against the pastor, he was on a team with first round defensive lineman last year.
And he was the sack leader.
He was.
That young man, you want to talk about if you don't know ball, it don't matter to you.
But if you know ball, when Clemson's defense is on the field, I'm sitting there posting.
What's Mr. Helt doing?
Let me grab my popcorn.
Let me get a little something in here.
I want to see what he's going to do.
I mean, you're right, though, that most of, like, the flashy guys,
the blockbuster guys in the ACC this year are offensive players.
And that may not be a bad thing for the league because most of the non-ball knowers
are tuning in to watch your quarterbacks and your receivers and your running backs.
But when you talk about tuning in to watch quarterbacks, though,
I hope the Calgarythum is listening.
I know the Calgarism, Kenton, rightfully so,
they feel like they've been a little neglected on this show lately.
We haven't talked a lot about them.
But my friends, when you're talking about exciting players,
I stay up extra late on Saturday nights because you know me.
I'm getting older.
I like to be in bed by 10, 10.30.
I'll stay up until one in the morning to watch JKS sling the rock for Cal.
I will stay up to watch that dude.
He is one of the most exciting players in the ACC,
regardless of time zone.
You're tuning in to watch JKS.
Absolutely.
And you want to know the most interesting thing I find about J.K.S.
When I really dig into not only his film, but his stats as well.
Because the film corroborated this, but when I saw the stats back to the,
I said, wait a minute, this kid is something so special here.
When you watch JKS play, you would think to yourself.
oh, this is a freshman.
He's a gunslinger.
He's going to turn the ball over a ton.
He only had nine interceptions last year.
And I know some people are going to say only, that's not that much.
But when you think about how much cow passed the ball around the yard last year, that really ain't much.
And then on top of that, if you watch all of his interceptions, some of those were not his mom.
Some of those were like, I'm trusting my receiver, do your deal, and they just let them down.
J.K.S.
When I tell you, he's that
archetype that, like, he's mobile
in the pocket. He's
mobile in a way that's like,
I may not, I'm not going to put
on the show with my legs, but I'm going to
find time to hit that
40-yard moonshot.
I'm going to, I'm going to scramble a little bit
and mess with your zones, mess with your eyes,
and I'm going to find a way to get that receiver
that's wide open now because your DBs are like,
why the hell I've been covering so long?
He is phenomenal.
He is prime time TV.
Him with LaPoy, that's dangerous.
That's dangerous, okay, with Wilcox.
And we all know, Willcox was not an offensive mass mile by any meet.
No.
He was good.
I think what LaPoy brings, oh, man, Alexa play deads because some safety's in trouble.
Now, you know, another one, and we should talk about SMU because they are the team that most people think will be the biggest challenge to Miami in the ACC this year.
And I mean, something that's not that common in today's college football to have a quarterback entering his third consecutive year as the starting quarterback in the same offense, not to mention he's already really good.
But I was having a conversation with a friend of mine about Kevin Jennings at SMU.
And like I, you know, he's not, he's not perfect.
He's not going to be a first round draft pick or anything this year.
But he's really dangerous.
He's really intelligent.
He's got dual threat capabilities, and you rarely see in this day and age a starting quarterback
start three or more years in the same offense, and you're getting that from Kevin Jennings.
That's another one to me, Kenton, where, and he also, I think Kevin Jennings might be in the
conversation of he's not necessarily going to be the ACC MVP, but he might be the guy who's
most valuable to his team when you think about what SMU is with versus without Kevin Jennings.
I'm going to tell you something.
The prediction that Kevin Jennings is not a first round pick, watch yourself.
And I only say that for this reason.
I only say that for this reason.
Every year we see a team get quarterback hungry and we out of nowhere, out of left field,
come in and draft the quarterback.
But you're right, Donald, three years as a starter in the same offense,
and every single year Kevin Jennings gets better.
he is the type of guy that when he came in, he was not the starter.
He was not heralded as like, hey, Kevin Jennings is the next one up.
I believe SMU might have been one of his only FBS office.
I don't think they were Power 4 at that time.
They were still in the AAC at that time.
So, you know, this is not a guy that everybody loved, everybody thought super highly up.
He's just worked.
He's just worked and got himself better and better.
and better. And not only that, he's a guy. Now, the way I said that J.K.S. is mobile trying to find a play.
Jennings has that in him, but Jennings also has that. If I pull that ball down, you need to be scared, too.
You need to be legitimately afraid if Kevin Jennings tucks tucks that ball under his arm and decides to run.
Because, I mean, he's got a lot of shiftyness to him. I wouldn't say he's the greatest in terms of straight line speed, but he's got a lot of shiftingness to him that can eat.
easily makes them defenders look really silly in the open field.
So I think Kevin Jennings being the guy for them, I mean, I'm not surprised there.
And it's interesting that we made the transition from Cal to SMU because another guy that they got that super exciting,
Kendra Rafael from Cal to SMU.
He was one of the best.
Has he played for every team in the ACC at this point?
He's tried.
He's tried.
If they give him another year, he might just transfer to Miami.
Who knows?
But Keatser Raphael, man.
Wonderful young man.
Wonderful young man, but on the field, he carries a power to his game that you would not expect from a guy his size.
He is just, he runs angry.
He runs hard.
And he's got a lot of wiggle to him too.
Not necessarily the breakaway speed.
If you combine like some true breakaway speed with the package that he has, I think that he'd be like otherworldly.
Oh, that's the most exciting guy.
And somebody's going to pay him seven figures this year.
But I think that he is still plenty of exciting with what he brings.
Yeah, no doubt. Well, one of the names that we mentioned is one of those aforementioned players going to win conference MVP this year.
We'll tell you what the recent trends have had to say about it and who's going to take home the crown in 2026.

He's Kenton Gibbs, former NC State Defense of Lyman, co-host of Lockdown Wolfpack.
I am Alex Dono, host of Lockdown Keynes.
All right, Kenton, if I'm looking at the last several overall ACC players of the year,
a.k.a. Conference MVP, as you would imagine, it's been very quarterback heavy. The last time a non-quarterback
one conference MVP was actually Travis E.TN, two straight years, 2018 and 2019, the running back with Clemson.
But for the last, it looks like six years, it's been quarterbacks. Haines King at Georgia Tech last
last year. Cam Ward at Miami the year prior. Jordan Travis at Florida State in 23.
Drake May at North Carolina in 2022. Kenny Pickett, 2021 at Pitt, Trevor Lawrence, 2020 at Clemson.
So surprisingly enough, Kenton, there are not odds. Yeah, I don't know if they ever will be.
I'm like Brennan Sorsby. I go deep looking for all the odds that I can't. I haven't been able to find odds yet.
on ACC most valuable player.
But if you go by odds for other things like, you know,
Heismet Trophy, other individual awards,
you would imagine the odds on favorite for that would be Dary and Mensa at Miami,
you know, a guy who put up big numbers at Duke last year.
He's now on the team that's expected to, you know,
be the top contender for the ACC championship this year.
And he's got a lot of weapons around him.
So I guess I guess the safe money would be on,
would be on Derry and Mensa.
But I don't know, who else would you put into that mix?
Because I think you and I both think a guy like Isaac Brown could maybe be the first
non-quarterback to win that award in seven years.
Oh, absolutely.
If we're talking non-quarterback, Isaac Brown is probably the cream of the crop.
I mean, you know, he has the superstar potential that the way that he plays the game,
the highlights are going to be there.
They're going to be there.
You're going to have those plays.
I remember against James Madison last year.
I'm watching that game.
I watched every single snap of that ball game, and they had them bottled up.
I want to say he had like 10 rushes for 16 yards or something low like that through
eight or nine or 10 carries.
And then all of a sudden, one play, 90-some yards.
He's gone.
You know, so he's definitely a guy, but I'm going to tell you, one that has some sneaky
value here.
And I'm not a degenerate like, Dono.
You know, Dono called me one night, said, Ken, I got a tip on Latvaria basketball.
I said, La Vyria, the place that Dr. Doom is from, that doesn't.
even exists in the real world. He said they play basketball. I got a tip for you. It's real
and it's spectacular. So, you know, Deuce Robinson, I think, will provide some real value because
think about this, Donald, if Florida State is to win eight games per cent, right? And, you know,
he just looks like the second coming of Calvin Johnson. Is there a way that you can deny him that?
I think it's going to be tough. I think only Darien Minza has the chops to do that type of deal.
because, I mean, you know, I talked about J.K.S.
And his lack of turnovers last year, there was only one quarterback that had more yards than JKS last year and less interceptions.
Daryon mentioned.
So obviously, Daryon is the guy.
But if we're talking non-quarterbacks, I think that those two are definitely in consideration.
And, of course, I got to sneak in a little bit of homerism.
I'm going to tell you something.
If you're talking about guys that can get it done, Duke Scott started once.
last year put up 200 yards that game he did start i'm not saying i'm not saying but i'm saying
he's one of those guys he has an interesting blend because he does have to breakaway speed and he
has a tremendous amount of power and he ain't got a ton of wiggle to him you know what i mean he ain't
going to wiggle his way out of paper bag but but if you see the back of that four it might be
katy d's at the doorstep it might be over and for a guy his size again he's just he's a thumper he's gonna
where you're down as that game goes on.
So, you know, there's a lot of potential guys I can see winning it this year as
nine quarterbacks.
But if we're including quarterbacks, let's go ahead and give your boy the crowd already.
Let's go ahead and just carry the trophy from Charlotte to Coral Gables already.
Well, and Lizzie, man, if it's not Mensa, I'm not sleeping on Malachi Tony.
I mean, you know, when we were talking about most exciting players on every team, like I
I would actually say Malachi, Tony, certainly a more electrifying player than Mensa.
And he might, you know, he's probably not going to have as many touchdown passes as Mensa,
but he might have three or four because they, they like to, they like to give Malachi some opportunities to throw touchdowns and run for touchdowns.
Because that's usually another recipe, right?
If you're trying to get a non-quarterback, you know, a most valuable player award,
usually when you've got a utility guy that does, you know, fills in it multiple different spots and does multiple
different things. That's also a good recipe to get a guy that award. It is, but Carson Beck
ain't that quarterback no more. I mean, with all due respect, Beck ball was traded. Kenton,
there were a couple weeks last year when Carson Beck was not the best quarterback on the field
for Miami. It was Malachi Tony. And that's my point. Exactly. And that's my point exactly, right?
Like, there is no such thing as a minza ball where we wait for him to make that pass where we all go,
Ah, there it is. There's the Darius event that we know and love.
So, you know, I highly suspect that he'll be in a better situation there.
But I think that what we're looking at here, what we honestly and truly have, more than anything else,
is a first-class group of quarterbacks, the likes of which is kind of returning the ACC to be the conference of quarterbacks.
Remember, there was a time where great quarterback play was everywhere.
You could not throw a rock in a room of ACC starting quarterbacks
and not hit a guy that people would say,
I wouldn't be surprised if he throws for 3,500 and 35 touchdowns.
So I wouldn't be shocked.
I wouldn't be crazy shocked by that.
And last year, we didn't necessarily have that level of quarterback play.
We had lots of lows, lots of guys who were inexperienced,
all that type of stuff, new coordinator, new quarterback,
all that type of stuff.
but this year we have just a phenomenal group of guys that have proven they've done it
even some within the ACC even if they're going to a new team like your boy you know but
we've got a ton of really really good quarterback play going on in ACC so I'm excited about that but
I'm going to tell you the thing that's going to stop Tony they're going if Tony has a great year
mince has a great year they're going to give it to mince because mince is the guy feeding Tony so
so you know that's that's what's going to happen there yeah yeah what we're talking a non
quarterbacks. One name we didn't mention is Justice Haynes, who's now a running back in Georgia
Tech transfer from Michigan. Is it like, is it in Brent Key's contract that he has to have at least
one Haynes on his roster at all times? Because he lost, he lost, he lost Haynes King and, uh, yeah,
and Jamal Haynes, but then he goes and grabs Justice Haynes in the transfer portal to fill
the Haynes quota. But he, Justice Haynes is someone, I know, uh, our guy, John's
Jarvis on Locked on Yellow Jackets did an episode about this.
He's going to take a lot of pressure off of Alberto Mendoza at quarterback with what he does.
Oh, absolutely.
And let me tell you something.
I don't know what deal, what NIL they have down there in Atlanta.
But I'm going to tell you this.
You're missing the huge doctors.
You know what? They got the Haynes underwear.
If they haven't come on Haynes T-shirts and underwear yet.
Yeah.
You are missing out on a massive opportunity.
You know?
Have a little commercial where they're handed down the tank top where it's like this old dingy tank top
And they're like this Haynes t-shirt has gone from Haynes and it shows Haynes king face and then to Haynes and it shows Jamal Haynes to you the newest hands and now you got justice Haynes saying I'm gonna take it and I'm gonna wear it and then and then Haynes says you don't have to do that we we have a ton more we know they're durable but you can get a new one and then boom you got a great commercial
on your hand. I'm trying to help you out, Georgia Tech. I'm trying to help you out, Haynes.
I'm putting my marketing brain to use. But I'm going to tell you. I'm going to tell you a lot
like the everlasting take top in that commercial, just as Haynes is a guy. A lot of durability,
a lot of strength. He's a load to bring down. I mean, you know, playing at Michigan last year,
I was surprised he transferred because he was there, the guy. He was there. He was the guy,
you know, and you think, why would you transfer out of a program like Michigan if you're the guy there?
but, you know, hey, everything happens the way it does for a reason.
I'm happy he's in the ACC.
And I'm happy.
And I'm going to tell you, when I watch him play, I'm happy I'm retired.
I'm happy I ain't got to tackle running backs like that.
But I did my time.
I had to tackle an Andre Williams of the world and all that.
I'm good.
I'm all set.
I'm all done, man.
So, you know, he's a fantastic player.
You know, started off at Alabama, went to Michigan,
was really good at both places, surprisingly enough.
And lands at Georgia Tech, you know,
He got himself one of those ones, as the kids would say.
You got to fill that Haynes quota.
You got to get that tank top NIL money.
We'll take a look at the ACC's Friday night slate because we own Friday nights, Kenton,
whether you like it or not.
It's no longer high school football night.
It's ACC game night.
We'll take a look right here on this brand new episode of Lockdown ACC.
Thank you for making Lockdown ACC your first listen.
For your next listen, make sure you check out our other shows.
Kent and Gibbs and Grayson Boone talk all things Wolfpack on Locked-on Wolfpack.
They talk all things, NC State.
I talk all things Miami on Locked on Cains.
Miami's going to have the first ACC Friday night game of the season, Kenton.
So let me go through this slate.
I'll go through it in its entirety, and you can tell me how you feel overall about the ACC's Friday night schedule.
So week one, some of these weeks, there's a bunch of games, actually.
So week one, you have Miami-E-Sov.
at Stanford, Friday night, September 4th.
Week two, you've got like a quadruple header of games.
You have Rutgers at Boston College, Villanova at Louisville,
Richmond at NC State, Norfolk State at Virginia.
Then week three, you have Miami at Wake Forest.
Miami's doing the Friday night circuit, apparently.
Week four, September 25th, you have Clemson at Cal.
That's going to be a good one.
week five, October 2nd, you have Pitt at Virginia Tech.
Week six, you've got Florida State at Louisville.
That's a good game.
Week eight, you have Duke at Virginia.
Also week eight, NC State at Stanford.
They got us both pulling multiple Friday nights this year, Kenton.
Week 10, you've got Virginia Tech at SMU, November 6.
That's a really good game.
Week 11, November 13th, Florida State at Pitt.
I wonder who Florida State's coach is going to be at that time.
Week 12, November 20th, you have Clemson at Duke.
That could be interesting.
That was a very competitive game last year.
Week 13, Florida at Florida State.
That's not going to be a night game,
but it will be a Friday game Thanksgiving weekend, 3.30 p.m. on ABC.
So I will say out there's a few stinkers week two,
but that's like a quadruple header.
But overall, I'm going to say that's actually not a bad slate of games for Friday night this year.
No, not at all.
That's not a bad slate of games.
And, you know, I'm glad that the ACC is finally.
embracing my plan take over all the rest of the days the week you got it yeah you're not going
win saturdays take over some of the other days and like you said this is a very interesting and
compelling slating games that you know we're expecting some of those to mean something we're expecting
some of them to have some good storylines behind them when they're playing them so you know ultimately
i'm very excited about what they're bringing uh and and and how this thing is going to work itself out
in terms of what we're looking at for this friday night slate i'm just so
so glad that the ACC wised up and said, hey, our path to success overwhelm you.
We're going to throw volume at you more days of the week.
You just, every time you want to see some football on Friday, we got you.
We got you.
You know, if your local high school, your kids are done with high school or, you know,
more of a band guy than a football player, don't worry.
We got you.
We know you still got to go to watch them or watch her perform at halftime.
We know, but don't worry.
You put it on your phone.
Oh, everything's streaming anyway.
Go ahead and watch that football game.
Watch your some ACC football.
I'll tell you the ones I think I'm looking forward to most.
Clemson goes out to Cal September 25th Friday night.
So you'd imagine, like they're going to make it like a 1030 p.m. start.
And you just know Cal, I feel like Cal's going to win that game.
They're going to be up for that.
So even if Clemson does win, I think it's close.
I think it's really exciting.
So that's one that I love.
And then the other one, you know, we'll see how well James Franklin does his first year.
But if Virginia Tech's pretty good this year, Virginia Tech at SMU, November 6, that's another, like, could be a really sneaky good game,
especially like if SMU is expected to be a team that could get to the ACC championship game,
but maybe Virginia Tech can play spoiler for them.
Those are two of my favorite games on the Friday schedule.
I think both of those games are great games.
And like you said, the storyline of a potential spoiler for Virginia Tech.
But watch this.
What if Virginia Tech is actually good?
What then?
What if this is one of those games that has massive implications on the conference coming down the stretch?
That's absolutely a game that could be worthwhile.
And I'm going to tell you, that Clemson Cowell game by then we'll know more about both teams and kind of who they are.
Right.
Because we keep expecting.
You're expecting Dabo to come back.
You're expecting that old, you know, everybody believes that Chad Morris is back
and the offense will be back.
It's believed that it's going to work that way.
You're going to see the return to form for Clemson.
Are we sure?
No, I'm not sure.
You and I both talked about how good JKS was, new coach, new offensive coordinator.
Are we sure?
So we'll have more information about both of these teams by then,
but it would be very interesting to see that.
And stylistically, a little bit of.
of a clash of the Titans, right? You got an offense that you know is going to be high flying
versus the defense that, like you mentioned, there are multiple guys that could be the most
exciting player on that team on that defense. So, you know, I think that that'll be a great
game to watch. And I'm not much of a club guy anyway, so I wasn't going to be outside on Friday
night. I was going to be in the house chilling anyway. Now I got some good football to watch. I love it.
And the other thing that we should mention, the Friday night games, they tend to get really spooky
Like it's a short week, slightly short week, but I think it does make a difference.
And some of the weirdest results we've seen happen on Friday nights.
I mean, in hindsight, it was not as big of the deal like at the end of the season,
but when Virginia upset Florida State and you'd rush the field,
that was on a Friday night.
And that was not an outcome any of us expected at the time.
Louisville beat Miami on a Friday night last year.
So these Friday nights can get very unpredictable.
And that's another reason I think the,
ACC has had success with these Friday night games because you never know who's going to win.
Yeah, and they're always so competitive.
I mean, neither one of those games was a clean blowout where it's like, oh, man, Florida State's got no chance.
No, that Florida State Virginia Tech game came down to double overtime came down to the Deuce Robinson, bobbling one that bobbing the ball for about eight yards because his legs are so long.
Each stride takes up four of them.
And, you know, he ended up letting that thing go.
which led it to go to overtime and all that good stuff.
But I'm going to tell you, both of those games, riveting stuff,
both of those games, the type of stuff that you're like,
if I'm the conference commissioner, I'm sitting back saying,
my plan is worked.
I got your football on a Friday, but not just football.
I got your great football, not 30-point blowout football.
I didn't give you, you know, hey, put the fourth string guys in
because you got eight games for your red shirt now football.
I gave you real football on a Friday.
How about it?
Yeah, no doubt.
